from the editor Make Time for Your Health In April, Dr. Sanjay Gupta delivered the commencement speech at his alma mater and imparted several words of wisdom to the 2012 graduating class of the University of Michigan. One piece of advice was to take a moment to stop, reflect and take it all in.

Like it or not, aging depletes hormone levels in 100% of adults. Most adults begin significant loss of hormones after their early 20’s. Childbirth, menopause, and time also alter womens’ hormone levels. Male hormone levels typically decline 1-2% annually, meaning that by their mid 40’s, most men have lost almost half their prime hormone levels.

We are so busy running around trying to get everything done that many times we don’t stop to savor the moments. Dr. Gupta (p. 29) certainly makes each moment count. Whether reporting on a breaking health story or leading the 2012 Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge, he does his best to motivate himself and others to stay healthy and active. Staying active at any age is one of the themes of our men’s health special issue. Make sure you get your checkups and find time in your schedule to exercise (p. 39). If you need some encouragement, ask a friend to join you for a walk, take up a group sport at your local gym or get advice from the Best Self community. We all have someone who helps us to feel our best. When we asked, here is what some of you had to say on Best Self’s Facebook wall: Meredith P: Stephen Posta at Dyer & Posta Salon in Kennesaw. Also, Metro Acupuncture in Sandy Springs. Both are so good I go out of my way to get to them! Leigh G: Ulrick Bien-Aime of Bien-Aime Strength & Stretch Studiogreat personal trainer who kicks my butt every time! Janet P: Karen Joanson-Scott chiropractor supreme and Pamela Villarama, personal trainer! DM Reed: Dr. Cleve Taylor of Fidelity Health - best chiropractor in Atlanta. Join us on Facebook and let us know who helps you be your best self! Happy Reading!

Amor Vie® therapy will, among other things, renew the hormone levels of your prime. Unlike many other hormone treatments, your Amor Vie® therapy is personally designed to restore the optimal hormone levels found in your early 20’s, not just the levels for a mid-life or senior adult.

Word of Mouth on the Web The Art of Touch Spa: (Midtown) This is the best place in Atlanta to have a therapeutic massage. Everyone affiliated with The Art of Touch is courteous and highly skilled. Call them. Book your visit as soon as possible. —Kerri W. on Yelp.com Yoga Samadhi: (Atlanta) Yoga Samadhi fulfilled all my wishes. It is the least expensive yoga option I found ($12 per class or $10 per class when you purchase a 10-class card); the instructors are nice, down-to-earth, dedicated and experienced, and they can definitely tailor a class to its participants. —Katie W. on Yelp.com BEST SELF ATLANTA

Hi, my name is Brian J. Johnston. I’m a busy “40-something” husband, father, and business owner, working as a personal trainer for the last 23 years. I’ve actively pursued and enjoyed physically challenging and competitive activities,

Until one day…

Various parts of my body began to rebel against me (low-back/disc issues,

tendonitis, rotator cuff, etc)

Are YOU Tired of: Taking workout orders from a “no-holds barred” instructor? … But still WANT a challenging workout!

Repetitive “time-filler” running, jumping calisthenics, etc?

… And would like age and skillappropriate exercises and routines!

Trying to keep up with the exercises and others in their 20’s-30’s?

… But want to Get Your MOJO Back!

Healthy and tasty ideas to nourish your body

Carrot Hummus If you are in the mood to try a new recipe for your next gathering or just want a healthy snack for the family, try this delicious carrot hummus. With its fresh flavors and ingredients, it is a healthy alternative to other dips and spreads. It contains no fats or oils, is gluten free and packed full of nutrients from the carrots and fresh ginger. Any leftovers can be used as a spread for sandwiches or toast. Ingredients: 2 pounds of carrots, shredded (food processor is perfect for this job) 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced 3/4 teaspoon coriander ½ teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon fresh ginger ¼ teaspoon chili powder ¼ teaspoon cinnamon ½ cup of water 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon cilantro, chopped for garnish

Method: Heat a large sauté pan. Once the pan is hot, add the carrots and a pinch of salt and cook until the carrots begin to soften. Add garlic and all of the spices. Cook a bit longer to incorporate the spices and then add water. Cover and reduce the heat to low. Cook until the carrots are tender, 15 to 20 minutes. At this point, you may need to add more water or orange juice. Place the carrots back in the food processor and add vinegar. Pulse just a few times to break down the carrots to a hummus consistency. Taste and adjust seasonings. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with thick cut veggie chips or whole wheat pita chips. Try fresh whole wheat pita, cut into triangles and toast with a brush of olive oil, salt and pepper. Serves: Makes almost 3 cups —Recipe courtesy of Cyndi Sterne, Hal’s Kitchen

Explore new ways to get more out of life

Shooting the Breeze By Neal McSpadden It’s a hot morning as I stroll out on the field, sweat covering my brow and a shotgun in my hand. This is not a typical Saturday for me, but I’m eager to improve my shooting skills. Although I’ve never hit a moving target before, I’m feeling pretty confident that I’ll be able to hit at least one of the clay pigeons that will soon be soaring high in the air above me. I’m at the Tom Lowe Trap & Skeet Range off of Camp Creek Parkway to take their beginner skeet shooting class, and I’m ready to blow things up! My instructor, Hamilton, shows me how to hold the gun and where to aim. Then it is my turn to yell,“Pull!” As the clay pigeon flies away from me, I line up my shot and pull the trigger – and miss. This morning started with a short presentation by three instructors, Chuck, Chuck and Hamilton, where we reviewed the safety procedures for using shotguns and the proper shooting technique. But I guess I must have missed a step. Fortunately, I get another chance to redeem myself. Hamilton tells me what I’ve done wrong, and I hit the next one and the one after that. Success! Next, the rest of the students in the beginner class have a chance for five warm up shots, and then we each shoot two rounds of 10. There are people of all ages here, from a 9-year-old boy to a mother with her four sons, and everyone manages to hit most of the targets. The beginner skeet class is held on Saturdays starting at 10:30 a.m. and costs $14.46 per person. This is a municipal trap and skeet range housing 20 combination trap and skeet fields and a five-stand sporting clays field, so there is plenty of room for the beginners and the experts. With some more practice, maybe one day I’ll be the latter.

Take a Hike

A Rockin’ Good Time

On September 29, pull out your hiking boots, pack a picnic and head to your closest Georgia state park to enjoy Free Day in the Parks. In celebration of National Public Lands Day, all Georgia state parks will be offering free parking and admission from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Spend a portion of the day giving back to a park by participating in trail maintenance and lake cleanups, then enjoy a variety of outdoor activities like fishing, horseback riding, backpacking and paddling. In total, Georgia has 58 state parks, but the closest ones to Atlanta include Panola Mountain State Park in Stockbridge, Sweetwater Creek State Park in Stockbridge and High Falls State Park in Jackson. Check the Georgia state parks website for information regarding the activities offered at each park.

Take advantage of the diversity the Counterpoint Festival has to offer from September 27 to 29. Featuring works from local artists and art schools, as well as food from some of Atlanta’s favorite restaurants, food trucks and breweries, this event will satisfy the likes of art, sports, music and food enthusiasts alike. This two-day festival boasts a lineup of bands including Bassnectar and Lotus, and with performance stages set up on acres of land and on the backdrop of a beautiful lake, everyone is guaranteed to have a great time all weekend long. Atlanta doctors provide answers to your questions

a

Q

Is sickle cell anemia inherited? Yes. This cell disease can only be inherited. It is not contagious. People with the disease, no matter what age they are diagnosed, were born with it because they received one sickle cell gene from each of their parents. If a child receives a sickle cell gene from one parent and a normal gene from the other parent, they will have sickle cell trait, but people with sickle cell trait do not typically experience any symptoms of the disease. A simple blood test can determine if a person has sickle cell disease or trait. Symptoms can include unexplained episodes of pain in abdomen, chest, bones or joints, swelling in the hands or feet or abdominal swelling.

Q

Which is the best choice: in vitro fertilization or tubal reversal?

The decision between IVF and tubal reversal is highly complex and profoundly affected by the factors of age, cost and time, as well as the presence of other potential infertility problems. Each couple facing this decision must be assessed and counseled individually to ensure selection of the treatment option best suited for them. Under the right circumstances, either may be an excellent choice. In many instances, however, in vitro fertilization is the better option.

Can I treat poison ivy at home or do I need to see a doctor? There are several at-home remedies for treating poison ivy. Remedies you can try yourself include rinsing your skin right away with lukewarm water. You can also take an oatmeal bath or apply a paste of baking soda or calamine lotion to soothe the itching. But if you have a serious reaction, it’s best to see your dermatologist who may prescribe a steroid ointment. To treat a severe case, a strong medicine like prednisone may be necessary.

What is Mohs surgery?

Mohs surgery is a surgical technique named after the inventor of the procedure, Dr. Frederick Mohs. Mohs surgery allows for the selective removal of skin cancers with the preservation of as much of the surrounding normal tissue as possible. Using a microscope, the Mohs surgeon performs a complete systematic search for the “roots” of a skin cancer. This offers the highest chance for complete removal of a skin cancer while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. The cure rate approximates 99 percent for new basal cell carcinomas and 97 percent for new squamous cell carcinomas, the two most common forms of skin cancer.

My teenage daughter will be trying out for the school basketball team, and I worry that at her age she may be more susceptible to injury. How do we play it safe? Unfortunately, teenage girls are more susceptible to sports injuries than teenage boys in certain sports such as basketball. The best way for your daughter to avoid injury on the court is to properly warm up before every game and practice. This includes strengthening, balance and agility exercises. Exercise is very important for healthy development, and it is vital that girls remain safe so they can stay in the game.

hether he’s advising people on the best ways to keep it or finding new ways in his own life to live it, maintaining good health is never far from Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s mind. His devotion to uncovering the truth about medical disasters and advancements is clear in every newscast and interview he gives.

I recently spoke with Dr. Gupta in between flights on his way back from Cambodia. Even while juggling a busy schedule and waiting for his next flight, he took the time to answer my questions with the same graceful authority and steadfast passion I’ve come to know from his television reporting. His openness and willingness to share his thoughts on various issues was not only insightful, but also gave a closer look into a man who is living proof that hard work, diligence and courage will get you far in life. In an article for Guideposts, Dr. Gupta wrote, “I’m often in the midst of disaster, drawing on my years of training as a neurosurgeon. I hope my work gives people a context in which they can view medicine and health on a broader scale.” Through sharing his experiences in the trenches and behind the scenes of hospitals around the world, Dr. Gupta sheds much-needed light on the ever-changing landscape of healthcare.

Starting the Journey

Long before Dr. Gupta accompanied the U.S. Army on rescue missions to Afghanistan or broadcasted the latest news from the tsunami aftermath in Japan, he was just a Michigan University student with a passion for medicine. His interest in the field of medicine came at an early age. His grandfather had suffered a stroke and was being treated at a local hospital when Dr. Gupta got his first glimpse into the world of neurosurgery. He remembers being fascinated by the neurosurgeons who were treating his grandfather and decided right then that he too wanted to help others in that way. After receiving a B.A. in biomedical sciences at the University of Michigan and an M.A. from the University of Michigan Medical School, he went on to complete his residency in neurological surgery at the University of Michigan Health System in 2000. During a stint in Washington, D.C., he met Tom Johnson, who was CEO of CNN at the time. This introduction later served as the catalyst for his foray into television. While in Atlanta to interview for a position at Emory University, he bumped into Johnson who asked him to be a part of the medical division he was starting at CNN. Although he took the job at Emory, Dr. Gupta still thought about joining the news team. Upon further reflection, he decided it might be an avenue to bring information to the masses. So he took the position under the condition that he could maintain a schedule that would allow him to see his patients and perform surgeries. As exciting as this new venture was, he was not willing to give up his first love, practicing medicine.

Q

with Alise Jones-Bailey Ask the Weight Loss Specialist

Why is using hCG for weight loss so effective? With obseity becoming one of the major health risks of our time, many physicians who specialize in medical weight loss are offering hCG as an option to losing weight in a short period of time, promoting a long term lifestyle change. HCG works by telling the part of the brain which controls fat metabolism and storage to start burning fat instead of protein when the calories are reduced. The net effect is weight loss. By resetting the hypothalmus to a new low carb default point, which minimizes carb cravings, an ongoing low carb diet is achievable long term. What do you think of the new FDA approved weight loss drug Qsymia? This July, the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration approved a new prescription diet drug called Qsymia. The medication produced dramatic weight loss in clinical trials however the weight loss comes with a big price. I am concerned over the potential side effects, including increased heart rate and birth defects. One of the ingredients is topiramate, an anti-convulsant that has been linked to birth defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate in babies born to women who have taken it for migraines or seizures. Qsymia’s other ingredient is phentermine, an appetite suppressant which is formally a component of the discontinued drug, fen-phen, that elevates heart rate and blood pressure due to it’s “amphetamine like” effects.

Beneath all of his accomplishments, however, you will find a humble man who, at the end of the day, just wants to spend quality time with his family. “I consider getting married and having kids my proudest personal accomplishment,” he says.

A Healthy Dose of Wisdom If you’ve followed his broadcasts, you may recall his reports on the dangers of sugar, whether diet can prevent heart attacks and the health challenges that the obesity epidemic has caused. Even in the face of these sobering realities, Dr. Gupta remains positive that we can turn things around. He feels that one of the most impactful tools is prevention. “Prevention is probably the biggest thing, medically, morally and financially,” he says. “If we keep people out of the hospital in the first place, creating that cultural prevention is what’s so important.”

Diet Dr. Gupta says one of the first things you can do to improve your health is eat less. “It’s a funny thing, but as human beings we simply eat way too much food. We eat twice as much food as we need calorie-wise,” he says. “I really enjoy food and am not going to give certain things up, and that’s fine, I just eat less of them. That’s how I started.” He advises people to look at their plates at their next meal and take one third of the food away.

Today, Dr. Gupta still holds practicing medicine as one of his top priorities, even taking himself out of the running for U.S. Surgeon General in 2009 after he realized the position would mean time away from family and diminished opportunity to perform surgery.

“If you’re already eating the right number of calories, it’s really important to focus on what those calories are.” This means making sure www.bestselfconnect.com

they come from healthy sources. Dr. Gupta goes on to explain, “I’m a great believer in exercise, but I think that if you can get control of your diet, everything else will come. I think diet is probably the most important thing.

I’ve adopted this phrase that I tell my patients in the hospital ‘More meditation and less medication.’ — Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Dr. Gupta feels that people don’t eat or move as they should. “I think if we just go back to our roots a bit we’ll be a lot healthier and it will make a huge dierence in our health overall,â€? he says. “Human beings used to eat sugar once a year. You got it when fruit fell from the tree and you could eat to your heart’s content. But how many apples and oranges could you really eat? And after the fruit spoiled, you didn’t eat it again for a year.â€? Today we are inundated with a seemingly endless supply of sugar in our diets, and it’s up to us to moderate it.

Time With a schedule as busy as his, Dr. Gupta strives to manage his time wisely. While no one method works for everyone, getting a handle on the tasks you need to accomplish gets you one step closer to a more productive day. “First of all, I make a list every morning of the things I want to get done that day, he explains. “The list is very realistic. I don’t put things on there that will really take two days. Instead I write down on my list what I want to accomplish today. Whatever activity Dr. Gupta has planned for his day – be it working on a

column for a magazine, writing a TV piece, or preparing something for teaching rounds at the hospital – he gives himself very speciďŹ c amounts of time to complete the task. “If you give yourself endless time to accomplish a task, you will take endless time to accomplish it. Always be really focused on how much time it’s going to take and at the end of that time, you’re done. So give yourself deadlines.â€?

Relaxation Since 2007, Dr. Gupta has incorporated meditation into his life. Not only does it help to clear his head, but also to relax after a stressful day. Meditation can mean dierent things to dierent people, but ďŹ nding a quiet place to sit in silence, even for a few minutes, can have a calming eect. Dr. Gupta learned the method he uses from cardiologist Dr. Herbert Benson of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine in Boston, and he’s found the results nothing short of remarkable. “I usually spend at least 20 minutes a day- if not 20 minutes twice a day - doing it, and it’s very relaxing. I ďŹ nd that I can lower my heart rate and my blood pressure objectively when I’m meditating as well, so it’s not just relaxing, but I can measure the impact,â€? he says. “I’ve adopted this phrase that I tell my patients in the hospital: ‘More meditation and less medication.’ Truly you can reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke by half by meditating twice a day.â€?

Health Maintenance In addition to the physical benefits, making time for a workout can offer mental clarity throughout the day as well. “I try to (exercise) early in my day, and after I feel like I’m so much more productive,” Dr. Gupta says. “I break a sweat every single day – at least a minimum of 45 minutes to an hour.” He also travels with workout bands in order to get some exercise in while he is on the road.

“Also, find someone who will really listen to you and have a personal relationship with you. I find that lack of communication is probably at the heart of most bad medical decisions. People can’t understand what the doctor said or chose not to ask (for clarification) because of a bad relationship with the doctor,” he says. Finally, Dr. Gupta recommends choosing a doctor who is going to focus on your overall well-being as opposed to just wanting to see you when you’re sick. If you’re finding it hard to remember to schedule that yearly check-up, try doing what he does. “I make an appointment to see my primary care doctor every year right around my birthday.”

The Future Keeping informed is the best thing you can do for yourself and for your family. “As people become more knowledgeable, they’re not going to tolerate having unhealthy food that is exponentially cheaper. They will make the choices to have healthier food,” Dr. Gupta says. And making healthier choices about what we eat should be passed down to future generations. “I think parents play a role, but I think there’s a role that everybody needs to play, and that ultimately the consumer is going to drive that.”

Beyond exercise, regular checkups help to maintain a sound mind and body. If you are looking for a physician, he recommends visiting a hospital and talking with nurses who can often give the best recommendations.

Inside the 2012 Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge Dr. Gupta is the first to stand up and practice what he preaches. In 2006, he helped launch CNN’s Fit Nation, a campaign to combat obesity. He traveled across the country bringing the message of regular exercise and healthy habits to college campuses.

“We’re trying to get very important health messages on television and I think the person who is giving those messages needs to put their money where their mouth is so to speak,” he says. In that spirit, he challenged himself as well as a few chosen viewers around the country to train for six months with him and then compete in the Nautica New York City Triathlon on July 18, 2010. Although he had never done a triathlon before that event, he was excited to begin. “I’m a guy who is always focused on my health, but I think L-R: Rick Morris, Carlos Solis, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Denise Castelli, Nancy Klinger, Adrienne LaGier and Glenn Calvin Keller, Sr. what I learned (from competing) was that until you take on a challenge like that, you may be life event. It was one of the best feelings I think I’ve ever had.” doing a good job but there are so many places where you can improve.” He also recalls the cameras following him added to the Choosing the people to accompany him on this adventure is always pressure. “Fear of embarrassment is a very powerful motivator,” he a challenge in itself. CNN was inundated with potential candidates says. “But it was daunting and it was hard. It was one of those things from around the country and it was up to Dr. Gupta and a committee when you cross the finish line, you literally feel like you’ve just had a of producers to narrow it down to a lucky few.

“We want the people to represent many communities in the United States. They all have some sort of challenge they’re trying to overcome.” Joining Dr. Gupta in the race to the finish line are the “Lucky Seven” which includes Carlos Solis (California), Nancy Klinger (Minnesota), Denise Castelli (New Jersey), Rick Morris (North Carolina), Adrienne LaGier (Maryland), Glenn Calvin Keller (Texas), and Atlanta’s own Jeff Dauler of Q-100’s The Bert Show. This year’s challenge will end on September 15 and 16 at the Nautica Malibu Triathlon. “This will be the first triathlon they will complete, and so far we’ve had 100 percent success rate with getting our triathletes across the finish line and I expect that not to change this year. I tell them that euphoric feeling when you crossed the finish line is something I want them all to experience,” he says. “These people are incredible, they put their whole lives out there and they share so much, they’re so vulnerable.” But it’s all for a good cause. Showing America that no matter what stage of life you are in or what level of health, anyone can do it if they set their mind to it. “I think that the ultimate goal (for the Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge) is to look at the Lucky Seven. I hope that people watch them and feel some sort of friendship with at least one of the Fit Nation athletes. I think that’s how people actually start to incorporate things into their own minds,” he says.

Photos by Amanda Sloane/CNN

In addition to the impact that he hopes the Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge will have on viewers, he feels it has changed him as well. “I think it was two main things. One is that the impact of diet on training cannot be overestimated. I thought I was a good eater before, but I am so much smarter now than I was,” he explains. “The second thing was it made me more time efficient. In a way (training) added time to my day that I didn’t expect because it forced me to be so efficient with things.” After completing this year’s Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge, Dr. Gupta will no doubt be off to his next adventure. He seems to be at the helm of an endless quest for knowledge of how Americans can live healthier lives. This journey has led him all over the world, and it’s not over yet. If there is a health crisis, a new improvement in health care or a breakthrough surgical procedure, you can bet he will be there, taking us along for the ride.

Q-100’s Jeff Dauler Competes in Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge

The local radio personality talks about breaking a sweat and what drives him to be better

Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge team member Jeff Dauler of Q-100’s The Bert Show

What are some of the challenges you faced while training, and how did you overcome them? I expected there to be physical challenges - that was obvious. What I didn’t expect was the mental game that I would be playing every single day as the event got closer. Time management, learning to say “no” to people, and just convincing yourself to do something that you have absolutely no interest in doing were all lessons I learned very quickly. It’s easy to overcome any obstacle when you have a firm date when you have to show up and perform.

What have you learned about yourself during the training process? I’ve learned to take total responsibility for me, to not feel any guilt when I can’t do for others because I have to do for me. I’ve learned to manage and budget time. I now strive to always be better. It’s like I have a purpose to each day now. And I have a far deeper appreciation for anyone who challenges themselves to be better every day mentally or physically. What is your advice to others who want to complete a triathlon? Put one foot in front of the other. Don’t look at the thousand plus yards to swim or the dozens of miles to bike and run. How long can you run today? For 30 seconds? Do it. Do it for a couple days, but then up it to 45 seconds, then a minute, then two, three, five, 10, 15 minutes. You just ran a mile! Keep going! Just start. What has been your motivation to complete the Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge? I am 100 percent responsible for the outcome. I have nobody else to blame if I don’t do this. Win or fail in Malibu, it’s all on me. I can’t escape it, make excuses, or pass it off on someone else. I have no choice but to do it, and at the end of the race I’ll know if I gave it my all. That’s what has me training every single day. Who do you follow on Twitter for fitness inspiration? For fun? Twitter has been a great teammate in the whole process! My coach is on there (@Aprils_Awesome) and keeps me honest. The @CNNFitNation family is so supportive. @michael_schlact and @ CoyWire are always good for some inspirational quotes. @runnersworld and @TriathleteMag do a good job of sharing tips and advice. @greatist has helpful overall wellness thoughts. For a laugh or two, @DannyZuker & @chrissyteigen. Of course, I have to mention my radio family, @ TheBertShow. What are the top three songs on your playlist for working out? I only listen to music when I run, and what playlist I choose depends on my mood that day, and how intense I’m going to go. Just to pass the time, Luke Bryan, Sugarland, Foster The People, Coldplay, Needtobreathe. To pump me up I listen to T.I.’s Bring ‘Em Out or best of AC/DC. It’s really all over the place. Do you reward yourself for completing a good workout? If so, how? The reward will come in September. Eye on that prize only. Although chocolate milk is a great recovery drink post-workout, and I do take advantage of that when it’s appropriate! Publisher’s note: Best Self Atlanta wishes good luck to Jeff Dauler. Goooooo Jeff! You inspire us. BEST SELF ATLANTA

Did You Know? More than 2 million men in the United Stated who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today. Each year, almost 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 30,000 men die of the disease. Early detection is critical to the success of prostate cancer treatments. Often there are no early symptoms. A yearly PSA screening blood test remains the best option to help men assess their risk. Georgia Urology follows the American Urological Association’s recommendation for yearly screening in males beginning at age 40.

Georgia Urology delivers the most advanced urological care available. As the largest urology practice in the Southeast, our 37 highly-trained and experienced urologists specialize in the medical and surgical management of all genitourinary conditions in men, women, adolescents and children including: • Urological cancers (including prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular) • Male and female incontinence • Kidney stones • Prostate problems • Erectile dysfunction • Urinary tract infections • Male reproductive health and infertility (including vasectomy and vasectomy reversal) • Pediatric urology

Men’s Health

Men’s Health Your road map to a better you By Fran Memberg

I

f you’re a man, you may not want to discuss health issues like an enlarged prostate or high blood pressure, but keeping up with the recommended health screenings and tests could save you from serious health issues later in life. Instead of waiting until you have a problem to visit the doctor, it’s important to take preventive measures now to avoid more serious issues down the road. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, men lag behind women when it comes to preventive healthcare, and this includes keeping current on health screenings. Statistics at www.ahrq.gov show: • Men are 24 % less likely than women to have visited a doctor within the past year. • Men are 22 % more likely to have neglected their cholesterol tests. • Men are 32 % more likely than women to be hospitalized for long-term complications of diabetes, and are more than twice as likely as women to have a leg or foot amputated due to complications related to diabetes. • Men are 24 % more likely than women to be hospitalized for pneumonia that could have been prevented by getting an immunization. www.bestselfconnect.com

Begin Your Journey to Better Health Your Health Screening Checklist

Blood Pressure

Since high blood pressure usually has no warning signs and the risk for high blood pressure increases with age, it is important to get checked regularly. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), normal blood pressure readings for adult men are around 120/80. Readings consistently over 140/90 signal high blood pressure. At the next doctor’s visit, try getting the blood pressure in both of your arms checked. According to a study published in The Lancet, readings in each arm are sometimes slightly off, but the difference in those readings can help you find out sooner if you are at risk for health problems. How often: Men between the ages of 18 and 64 should have a screening once a year. If your readings are high or if you have a family history of high blood pressure, you should have it checked more often, at least twice annually.

Cholesterol

A high level of “bad” cholesterol (LDL), increases your risk of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. This occurs when fat, cholesterol and other substances build up in the walls of arteries and form hard structures called plaques which can block the arteries causing a heart attack or stroke. A cholesterol test can measure the amount of fat (lipids) in your blood. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a healthy LDL cholesterol level is below 130. How often: The NIH recommends that men between the ages of 20 and 35 have a cholesterol screening every five years. Starting at age 35, men should be tested annually. Men suffering from diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or who have had a stroke should have cholesterol tests more often.

Colon Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. Most colon cancer develops from polyps on the inner surface of the colon. There are several test options that screen for polyps including a colonoscopy, a flexible sigmoidoscopy that is performed while awake and inspects only part of the colon; and a high-sensitivity fecal occult blood test (FOBT). How often: According to the ACS, men at average risk should start having a colonoscopy every 10 years starting at age 50. If you have a family history of colon cancer or polyps, ask your doctor when you should begin screening. If you choose not to have a colonoscopy, a flexible sigmoidoscopy should be done every five years, or a FOBT done annually.

Diabetes

Diabetes is the body’s inability to produce and use glucose, resulting in high blood glucose levels. Undiagnosed, it can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, blindness and more. This condition can be checked with a fasting plasma glucose test that measures blood sugar levels. According to the American Diabetes Association, levels measured before a meal that are between 70 and 130 are considered healthy. How often: The CDC recommends that men have this test every three years starting at age 45. If you’re significantly overweight, have high blood pressure or other risk factors, such as a family history of the disease, screening for diabetes should begin at a younger age. www.bestselfconnect.com

Teeth and Gums

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, men are twice as likely to get oral cancer as women. Visiting the dentist regularly will allow for early detection of oral problems, such as cavities, gum disease and oral cancer, and the chances of a cure are greater. How often: The NIH recommends men of all ages should go to the dentist at least once a year for an exam and cleaning.

Eyes

Regular eye examinations are important for early diagnosis and treatment of potential problems that may show no warnings sings. A typical eye exam includes a test for visual acuity, as well as a check of the cornea, eyelids, conjunctiva and surrounding eye tissue to look for abnormalities. Eye pressure to detect glaucoma, a disease that can damage optic nerves, is measured. Normal eye pressures range from 10 to 21. How Often: According to the American Optometric Association, men between the ages of 18 and 60 should visit an eye doctor every one to two years, or as recommended by a doctor.

BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height that is used as an indicator of body fatness. According to the CDC, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for adults signals a healthy weight. A BMI between 25.0 and 29.9 indicates that you are overweight, and a BMI of 30.0 and above signals obesity. How Often: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all adults should ask their clinicians to calculate their BMI at their routine checkups.

STDs

Sexually transmitted diseases have many undetectable signs and symptoms, causing many of them to go unnoticed until serious complications arise. Untreated sexually transmitted diseases can lead to many health issues including reproductive health problems, cancer and HIV infection. How Often: The CDC encourages HIV testing at least once between the ages of 13 and 64. Ask your doctor what other appropriate STD screenings are right for you based on certain risk behaviors.

Prostate

According to the CDC, prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in American men after skin cancer. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is the primary method of screening, measuring the level of PSA in your blood. According to the National Cancer Institute, an optimal level is usually considered to be under 4. How often: Opinion varies as to how often you should be screened, but many physicians recommend that men should have yearly screenings between the ages of 40 and 75.

September Is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder. It surrounds part of the urethra, the canal that empties the bladder. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and this year it comes on the heels of a controversial ruling that recommends against a routine screening that for years has been the benchmark in testing for prostate cancer. In May 2012, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening for prostate cancer. The USPSTF sees little evidence that PSA testing saves men’s lives; in fact, it can lead to complications from the treatment of tumors that would not have killed the patient. Some urologists disagree with the USPSTF recommendations. “The basis of the prostate screening controversy is entirely linked to the patient’s right to know,” says Dr. James K. Bennett, CEO of Midtown Urology/American Medical Systems in Atlanta. “As a urologist who battles this disease on a daily basis, I felt that the rug was pulled out from under my feet. More than 30,000 men die of prostate cancer each year in the U.S. - a number that will grow if we give up our best way of detecting this disease early.” says Dr. Scott Miller of Georgia Urology, who started the non-profit organization ProstAware to further educate people about prostate health. “Waiting for symptoms to develop – as the Task Force suggests – almost always leads to diagnosing prostate cancer at an incurable stage.” Dr. Miller suggests asking your doctor these basic questions: • What type of testing do I need? • Does an abnormal PSA blood test mean that I have prostate cancer? • Does a normal PSA blood test mean that I do not have prostate cancer? Prostate cancer has no early warning signals, which is why undergoing a yearly DRE and blood testing for PSA is so important if you are 50 years or older. Also, men in the high-risk group, such as those with a family history of prostate cancer or of African American ethnicity, should begin screening as early as age 40. However, many men have symptoms that do point to problems with the prostate gland. The American Cancer Society recommends seeing a health care provider if you have any of the following symptoms: difficulty initiating and/or stopping a urine stream, frequent urination, pain on urination, or pain on ejaculation.

Men’s Health

Energize Your Journey with Activity and Fitness Whether you’ve been physically active since your little league days or are thinking about starting an exercise program to shed extra pounds that contribute to a host of health issues, it’s important for men over 40 to be mindful of how the body changes with age to avoid common sports injuries.

Take a Smart Approach to Your Fitness Program

Metro Atlanta chiropractor Dr. Alan Bragman specializes in treating patients with athletic, traumatic and personal injuries. As a former category 3 cyclist and nationally ranked inline speed skater, he knows firsthand the importance of proper training and form when it comes to preventing injury. According to Dr. Bragman, the aging body experiences cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, hormonal, neurological and other system changes. For example, a condition known as arteriosclerosis occurs when there is diminished blood flow, circulation and elasticity of blood vessels caused by a buildup and hardening of fatty plaque deposits along the walls of the vessels. An aging body also experiences loss of muscle mass, joint flexibility, bone density and nerve cells, as well as a decrease in production of growth hormone, among other changes. On the bright side, Dr. Bragman says it’s possible to maintain an exceptional level of fitness well into your nineties. “By continuing to train well throughout your life, your performance will decrease very slowly. The key is learning how to do it without getting injured or causing your body to break down from the effort.” Dr. Bragman points out four important elements for a good fitness program: 1. Strength and resistance training (weight training) to maintain muscle mass and bone density. 2. Stretching and flexibility workouts to maintain flexibility and mobility of muscles, tendons and connective tissue. 3. Cardiovascular fitness and training to maintain a healthy heart and blood circulatory system. 4. Rest and recovery allows the extra time needed for an older body to eliminate metabolic waste that builds up during exercise and to generally recoup from an exercise session.

Preventative Measures Dr. Michael Morris, an orthopaedic surgeon in the Lawrenceville office of Resurgens Orthopaedics, specializes in sports medicine. About 250 of his surgical patients each year are men over 40. Knees and shoulders are the most commonly injured joints Dr. Morris treats in older male patients. “After age 30, genetically and physiologically our bodies decline,” he explains. “It’s an uphill battle to maintain what you have.” (For example, bone density and muscle mass). He adds, “Tendons connect ligaments to bone - they break down and won’t respond as well as in a younger person.” When injuries can be treated with physical therapy, Dr. Morris says he counsels his patients to take preventive measures to avoid more serious trauma that requires surgery. He recommends a five-step approach, and encourages patients to take the extra time to do what he suggests before and after a sports activity or exercise session for maximum benefits: 1. Warm up by jogging, running in place or using a stationary bike for five to 10 minutes to get blood and oxygen flowing to body tissues, as this gets them ready for more impact. 2. Stretch to get muscles and tendon pre-lengthened. Otherwise, they get overloaded during the activity. 3. Enjoy your game or exercise routine. 4. Stretch again to keep muscles and tendons lengthened as much as possible before they return to a normal state. 5. Apply ice to constrict blood vessels and diminish inflammation. Dr. Morris also suggests moderating your activity level if you’re doing too much and mixing in other activities if you tend to do the same sport or exercise repetitively.

Check Out Something New Low Impact, Big Results

Former pro wrestler creates exercise program for regular guys By Fran Memberg Photography by Gregg Willett Photography

Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) is no stranger to pain. Being slammed around a pro wrestling mat takes a toll on the body. Injuries are bound to happen, especially if you first enter the ring at an age when normal physiological changes like decreased strength, flexibility and stamina have already begun to set in. At age 35, Page became the oldest rookie in pro wrestling history. Over his 14-year career he sustained several injuries, but was determined to get better and stronger. In the late 1990s, he ruptured the L4 and L5 lumbar discs in his lower spine. “They said, ‘you just can’t come back. If you do you’re going to be crippled,’” he recalls. But that didn’t stop him. He went to rehab. “The first three weeks I was amazed how much it really helped me,” he says. Following a back injury that doctors said would end his career, Page combined yoga, rehab techniques and calisthenics to recover and prove the doctors wrong. Using that regimen, Page developed YRG (Yoga for Regular Guys). He watched several yoga videos and added the moves to his rehab routine. “I realized it was really helping me, so I thought, ‘what if I take some of these moves and mix them with those rehab moves?’ And then I thought, ‘what about doing push-ups [so] I’m [also] going to be working my upper body?’” he says. “I got the yoga, the rehab and the old school calisthenics. Two months in, I’m feeling better.” www.bestselfconnect.com

Page, now 56, retired from wrestling and is dedicated to sharing the benefits of DDP yoga with the masses. In the beginning, he teamed up with Dr. Craig Aaron, the “Yoga Doc,” of Marietta, GA., to write a book about YRG. Today he has a DVD of a supercharged version of YRG called DDP Yoga that adds active breathing techniques and power movements for a more challenging and results-oriented workout. The main benefits are body fat loss and improved cardio levels without placing undue stress on joints. Page himself does the DDP workout five to six days a week. “It’s just such a great cardio workout and I keep my muscle leaner as opposed to big and bulky,” he says. He touts the weight loss benefits of YRG and DDP Yoga, citing stories of devotees who have lost up to 100 pounds. “It was mainly there to inspire people and I never knew it would take off the way it did,” he says, adding that “zero impact” is what attracts many to DDP Yoga. After living in LA for the last ten years, he will soon be calling Atlanta home again. Make sure to look out for the next DDP Yoga class by visiting visit www.ddpyoga.com.

The Creative Edge to Planning Flavorful & Well Balanced Meals Nutritional analysis Reformulation as necessary to ensure adherence to nutritional targets Costing of the recipe Inclusion of the recipe in menu planning – meal composition considerations include color, textural contrast, flavor profiles, variety in the menu, etc. Continuous quality improvement – ongoing product review and response to customer feedback to ensure 100% customer satisfaction

What happens first? Our staff of experienced food professionals work individually and as a team and draw upon the following to develop concepts: Feedback from customers, culinary experience, inspiration from touring local food markets, restaurant association activities, food trends in the marketplace, and tried and true family recipes.

Who does what? The Research & Development Chef translates meal ideas into recipe concepts.

Julie Shipkoski, RD, Food Services Mgr. Catherine Izzo, RD, Research & Development Chef Justin Wills, Executive Chef What does it take to create a fabulous, delicious, healthy menu? It takes culinary skill, creativity, and innovative solutions to develop affordable, healthful and flavorful meals. There are many steps in the process: New product ideation Recipe formulation with careful attention to healthful ingredients and depth of flavor Determination of best cooking methods and techniques to maximize flavor

Good Measure Meals (404) 815-7695 www.GoodMeasureMeals.com Good Measure Meals™ is a local Atlanta company that prepares and delivers fresh, healthy, delicious meal plans for people who want to lose weight, manage a health condition or who are just too busy to prepare well-balanced meals for themselves. GMM is also dedicated to providing support services and nutrition education to its customers and the public at large. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of GMM meal plans support Atlanta nonprofit Open Hand community nutrition programs, which are provided free of charge to homebound seniors and individuals battling chronic or critical illness.

Together the R & D Chef, Executive Chef, Culinary Staff, Food Services Manager and Registered Dietitians create recipes that maximize flavor and optimize nutrition. The R & D Chef and Executive Chef determine best cooking methods and techniques. The R & D Chef and Food Services Manager, both RDs, optimize the nutritional integrity of our products through healthful selection of ingredients, detailed nutritional analyses and careful attention to portion control. The Daily Product Review Team, Customer Service and Marketing weigh in on which products make the final cut for the seasonal menu launches.

How many times is a recipe tested? Every recipe is tested until the R & D Team, Nutrition Services, Marketing and Customer Service are confident a recipe will exceed our quality standards and customer expectations.

How long does it take to balance a meal? Many things have to be considered when balancing a meal - adherence to our strict nutritional targets, meal composition, portion size, the composition of the other meals served that day – so it actually takes several weeks for the achievement of proper balance.

How many people are involved in the whole process? If you were to count – hundreds: our Customers, our Registered Dietitians, Food Services Manager, R & D Chef /RD, our AWESOME Executive Chef, Executive Sous Chef and Culinary Staff, Production and Kitchen Managers, Purchasing and Receiving Personnel, Customer Service, Business Development Team, Marketing and Finance.

Dizziness and Vertigo

What is dizziness?

What can be done about this?

Dizziness simply means a feeling of unsteadiness or disorientation in space. This is described as some type of movement sensations in the head such as giddiness, lightheadedness, swimming, wooziness, or spinning sensations. Dizziness can increase your risk of falling if you lose your sense of balance.

The first step is to pinpoint the underlying cause of the symptoms, through a comprehensive neurological history and examination. At Midtown Neurology, we also use state of the art techniques (e.g. dynamic posturography, video nystagmography, calorimetric testing, and trans cranial doppler) to test each part of the balance pathway and clarify what problems exist. Once this underlying cause is identified, it can be appropriately treated with a customized regimen incorporating strength training, fall prevention strategies, sensory and motor balance re-training, eye-head coordination exercises, gait/transfer training, and functional dynamic activities to assist you in returning to daily activities and recreation.

What is vertigo? Vertigo is a sensation of spinning. Often the room is spinning around you, but there are vertigo sensations where you can feel as if you are spinning in your own head without the room spinning. Vertigo can also increase your risk of falling if you lose your sense of balance.

What are the causes of dizziness and vertigo? The sensation of balance requires many different body parts to work in concert, and disrupting any one of these parts can lead to dizziness or vertigo. Some typical causes include decreased blood flow to the brain (often caused by sudden standing from a sitting/lying position, but sometimes due to medications or dehydration), inflammation of the nerve leading to the inner ear, or calcium particles in the inner ear itself. Each of these causes leads to a different type of sensation, and is treated in a different way.

When should I be concerned? Occasional momentary disruptions in sense of balance associated with sudden changes of position are usually benign. Any repeated or continued sensations of dizziness of any kind or vertigo that does not resolve should be investigated. Any of the above sensations associated with neurological symptoms such as loss of vision, numbness and tingling, or loss of consciousness should also be investigated immediately. Dizziness or vertigo that comes on without changes in position are also of concern.

Age Management in Men At what age should men consider an age management regimen? Age management medicine refers to a proactive, preventative approach to healthcare for individuals who are 40 or older. Around age 30, there is a small but gradual decline in hormone levels. By age 40 and onward, the decline becomes so significant that men begin to feel the negative impact associated with those changes.

In what ways do men age differently than women? For men, the decline in hormone levels is more gradual. For women, especially during menopause, the changes occur over a shortened time frame. This usually causes more acute symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, insomnia, vaginal dryness, decreased libido and cognitive changes.

What are some common symptoms of a hormone imbalance in men (andropause)? The symptoms and their severity vary from individual to individual. However, the general symptoms include fatigue, loss of energy and vitality, increase in body fat, loss of muscle mass, diminished response to exercise along with longer recovery time, generalized aches and pains, diminished libido and erectile function, loss of motivation and poor memory, focus, or concentration.

What are some common age-related diseases men need to be aware of? The prevention of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer and dementia are always important.

What are some preventative steps men can take to maintain optimal health and well-being? A review of a man’s lifestyle, his medical history, along with a complete physical examination and comprehensive laboratory evaluation by a physician experienced in age management medicine provides the basis to determine what risks or problems exist and what measures should be taken. At that point, a personalized, proactive treatment plan can be established.

Physician for New Vitality Medical Institute Dr. Kenneth Ricci, age 55. The body in these images has not been altered in any way. New Vitality Medical Institute (404) 228-7900 5755 North Point Parkway, Suite 53, Alpharetta, Georgia 30022 At New Vitality Medical Institute, we help our patients improve the way they look and feel so that they enjoy a good quality of life, regardless of their age. Dr Ricci has been focused on achieving these outcomes during the course of his entire career, which began in 1986. While he is certified in family medicine and is a diplomat of the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, he refined his skills in adult and internal medicine while working with a multi-specialty medical practice for 15 years. During that time he counseled his patients on nutrition, exercise, neutraceutical supplementation, and prescribed hormone replacement therapy. Since that time he has been actively praciticing in the field of Age Management Medicine.

What are some natural remedies for andropause? Proper nutrition, weight loss, exercise and sleep are the best first steps. However, some forms of exercise are more effective than others, so the key is not necessarily exercise duration. There are different approaches to nutrition as well, but what works best for most people are food combinations that help maintain stable levels and relatively low insulin levels. That said, optimized bioidentical hormone replacement is not achieved through nutrition and exercise alone in individuals with low levels. Therefore, the best results are seen in individuals who incorporate sound nutrition and exercise with hormone replacement if it’s use is clinically indicated.

What are three things a man can do on a daily basis that can slow the aging process? Eat properly, exercise (provided your doctor has cleared you to begin an exercise program) and a get a good night’s sleep.

A Team Approach Works Best for Skin Cancer Care Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with one in five Americans developing some form of skin cancer during their lifetime. Fair-skinned, blonde or red-haired people with blue or green eyes at the highest risk. In fact, if you are fair skinned and live to age 65, you have a 40 to 50 percent chance of having at least one skin cancer in your lifetime. Most skin cancers are either basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, which are most often cured by surgical removal. These cancers commonly occur in sun-exposed areas, particularly the head and neck region. Though the cancer often presents as a sore that flakes, bleeds or doesn’t heal, it can also appear as a pearly, raised area, a flat scaly spot or even a white, waxy scar. On the other hand, melanoma, which forms from the pigment-producing cells in our skin that are part of the body’s neuroendocrine system, can be deadly if not diagnosed and treated early. As a general rule, if you have a mole that has changed in appearance or is irregularly shaped, contains many colors or is larger than the size of a pencil eraser, you should have a dermatologist evaluate it. The good news is that cutting edge skin cancer management can now provide patients with substantially higher cure rates using Mohs surgery techniques, which are performed exclusively by specially trained dermatologic surgeons. Using microscopic control of the surgical margins, the Mohs surgeon can provide the patient with up to a 99% cure rate for the most common forms of skin cancer. Following removal of the cancer; the Mohs surgeon may partner with a facial plastic surgeon to reconstruct the most challenging and complex facial defects. The facial plastic surgeon can minimize deformities by employing the most advanced reconstructive methods in conjunction with their artistic sensibilities. This is particularly important in the face, since our faces define who we are. Well-done facial cancer reconstruction is critical to maintain a person’s sense of wholeness and to preserve function of vital structures such as the eyelid, nose and lip areas. It’s important to note that skin cancer rates have increased more than 75 percent between 1992 and 2006. To reduce your risk, stay out of the sun, avoid tanning beds and wear a broad spectrum sun protectant with SPF 30 or greater every day of the year. But if you do find a skin lesion that concerns you or have recently been diagnosed with skin cancer, rest assured that the best care is just around the corner.

TMJ-Jaw Pain, Popping & Clicking? Does your jaw “lock up”, click or cause you pain when opened or closed or when you chew, do you have headaches that can’t seem to be diagnosed? The problem could be the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is formed by two bones, the skull’s temporal bone and the mandible, or jawbone. These two bones, two on each side, form the hinge-like joint called TMJ. It is the physical connection where the jaw meets the skull. The joint can become slightly out of place and cause multiple problems. Besides those mentioned above, other common symptoms can be pain when chewing, shoulder and neck stiffness, earaches, dizziness and unexplained headaches.

I fell 10 years ago and hurt my low back, my hip and my pelvis...I could not walk, drive, weight bare, sit, or barely stand. After just a few treatments, I noticed my body stabilizing... I could sleep better, walk better and continue to work...Total Health Care is the only place I will go ever again.” —Julie W.

What We Offer: • Regenerative & Integrated Medicine for Chronic Pain • Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists & Chiropractic Physicians On Staff • Regenerative Non-Steroidal Bio-Medicines (injections) • Anti-Arthritic Joint Injections Supartz® (for knees) www.supartz.com • Advanced Joint Fluid Replacement • Advanced Nerve Testing (Numbness & Tingling) • Lower Back & Neck Regenerative Disc Therapy

Often this is because TMJ dysfunction can place neurological strain on your body. Typically in TMJ syndrome the lower jaw (mandible) is extended forward. A head forward posture exaggerates the problem. This forward mandible aggravates the cervical ligament laxity, which increases the neck pain. Again an endless cycle of pain and disability is created in the neck, head, and face region. Eventually the mandible moves forward to the extent that it will stretch the lateral TMJ ligament and produce pain. Once the lateral TMJ ligament becomes lax the joint will click. It is important to note that clicking in any joint is an indication of ligament laxity of that joint. Joint clicking is never a normal or good sign. Joint clicking, whether it is in the TMJ, knee, neck, or lower back is almost always abnormal. The body’s compensatory mechanism for such a situation is to tighten muscles and to grow more bone. The end result will be degeneration, arthritis, and stiffness in that joint. A combination of Prolotherapy injections to strengthen both the cervical vertebrae and the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint combined with manipulations of the affected areas to realign the joints will often solve this problem. CEO of VOICE Today Angela Williams speaks out against childhood sexual abuse

Come dressed in all white attire and enjoy an evening of music, cocktails and delicious cuisine benefitting Open Hand. The Event Gallery at King Plow Arts Center, 7:30 -10:30 p.m. www.projectopenhand.org

What is unique about VOICE Today? VOICE Today is a non-profit organization breaking the silence and cycle of child sexual abuse worldwide. It is the only organization that I know of that takes a wholistic approach to the issue of child sexual abuse, focusing on educating adults on how to predict and prevent abuse and help survivors. What has been the most rewarding experience for you while working at VOICE Today? The most rewarding experience is witnessing a total life change in a survivor of child sexual abuse. When a survivor is able to break their silence, they can begin to release the shame and guilt and understand that they were a victim. Once they embrace healing, they are able to build healthier lifestyles and learn how to love themselves. VOICE Today offers programs for healing that include workshops, retreats and support groups. I must say it is also very rewarding to know that our work can save the innocence of a child by delivering much needed training on how to prevent child sexual abuse. How can people get involved? People can become involved by volunteering, donating, fundraising or attending an educational workshop on child sexual abuse prevention and healing. Are there any upcoming events you can tell us about? Our events can be found on our website, www.voicetoday.org, but here are just a few to highlight:

Upcoming events Child sexual abuse prevention workshops are held on the third Thursday of every month at 9:30 a.m. in The VOICE office. September 8 is Showcase Atlanta with radio host India Hines. October 8 is Ride For A Voice at Killer Creek Harley-Davidson Alpharetta. Details: www.voicetoday.org

Pay for college without going broke! Free local workshops help parents save thousands!

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

My name is LuAnn. I am a Nurse Practitioner and I stand on my feet all day long in my job. In the last few years, I had begun to have a lot of problems with deep aching pain and swelling in my leg. I started to have to limit my activity and the pain began to interfere with my life. I had been to several doctors who could not help me because of a complicated venous condition that I have had my entire life. Then I was referred to Dr. Prevosti. The procedures that he performed for me completely eliminated the pain and swelling. I am now able to do things that I have never been able to do before! Dr. Prevosti’s compassion and expertise in the treatments that he provides are the best in his Åeld.
