Live Long, Live Happy So, just what is the key to living a long, healthy and happy life? Is it eating well, exercise, the right job, the perfect body or partner? Several studies have shown cultures that thrive and rank high in longevity and happiness have several factors working in their favor. Food from the earth and physical activity are high on the list, but community, friends and family were at the top. Many of us think that we need to feel loved and cared for to be truly happy. While this is really important, the research seems to say it is more important that we love and care for others. It is when we get outside of ourselves and stop thinking so much about “my life, my happiness we truly begin to reap health benefits. Those who focused on other people—friends, family and co-workers stayed healthy and the effect was greatly increased if they volunteered and got involved in helping others. To put it simply...it’s not all about you. During this holiday season and in celebration of our “giving issue, let’s remember that what makes this a happy world is our connection and caring for each other. When we get outside of ourselves and think of others, we find peace and perspective. So, don’t sweat the small stuff. Love your family and your friends. Give a little of yourself to help another and your holidays will be happy and you will be on the path to a long and healthy life. All the best Sherri Adair, Publisher, sadair@bestselfatlanta.com

Healthy and tasty ideas to nourish your body
Easy Pasta with Roasted Corn, Edamame and Tomatoes After a while, pasta can become boring when you stick to well-known favorites like alfredo and marinara. Spice up your repertoire and try this easy-to-make pasta with roasted corn, edamame and tomatoes. This recipe will give you the right amount of fruit and veggies you need to balance out the starch of pasta. Try adding slices of roasted chicken or steak to turn leftovers into a revamped second meal. Ingredients: 12 ounces linguini or farfalle 1 tablespoon of olive oil ¾ pint of grape tomatoes cut in half 1 cup frozen shelled edamame (Traders Joe’s brand) 1 cup frozen roasted whole kernel corn (Traders Joe’s brand) Handful of freshly grated Parmesan cheese Method: Cook the pasta according to the package directions, adding the edamame and corn during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Reserve ½ cup of the cooking water, drain the pasta and vegetables and return them to the pot. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tomatoes and sauté until slightly softened, about 5-6 minutes. Add the tomatoes and Parmesan to the pasta and vegetables and toss to combine. Add the reserved cooking water if needed. This mobile farmers market can be found anywhere from the CNN center to downtown Brookhaven. A complete schedule of their locations can be found on their website.
Since she was a teenager, founder of Frannie’s Gluten Free Muffins, Frances Shaw has been dealing with fibromyalgia and gluten intolerance. Due to her poor health, she had to leave the Savannah College of Art and Design and was homebound for a year, but she used this time to create flavorful “allergy smart” muffins. These fluffy treats are free of gluten, dairy, nuts, soy and yeast, eliminating most food allergy concerns. Loaded with health benefits, they are made with organic fruits, vegetables and antibiotic-free eggs.
You can find them at the Peachtree Road Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and the East Atlanta Farmers Market on Thursday evenings. They have a meat CSA (community supported agriculture program) year-round and fresh produce CSA from mid- May through the third week of December. No matter which location you visit, their fresh products are sure to impress. Details: Riverview Farms, 954 White Graves Road, Ranger, GA, (706) 334-2926, www.grassfedcow.com

Explore new ways to get more out of life
A Llama Experience Compiled by Addie Balenger Instead of traveling down to South America to trek with llamas, simply visit the historic High Hampton Inn and Country Club located in Cashiers, N.C. Less than three hours from Atlanta, the inn offers its guests several opportunities to bond with these shaggy four-legged creatures. Every Thursday and Friday during the summer, llamas accompany hikers and serve as golf caddies. They make the ideal hiking companion, carrying picnic baskets, blankets and provisions as walkers make their way around Cherokee Campgrounds or around Hampton Lake up to the top of Rock Mountain. If you enjoy golfing, reserve a llama as your caddy. Fitted with a special harness to carry golf clubs, a llama does its job well, with feet shaped in such a way that they do not damage the grass. While a llama caddy may not be able to help you with your game, at least you won’t have to worry about them judging your stroke! During the evening, attend a meet-and-greet with the llamas at the inn’s Rock Mountain Tavern. Visitors have a chance to include a llama in the family picture and create a unique trip keepsake to show off to friends for years to come. The llamas at High Hampton Inn are not ordinary llamas. Previously featured on “National Geographic Adventures,”“BBC” and “Animal Planet,” these animals are owned and raised by Mark English, who has experience raising llamas at his family’s farm in Brevard, N.C. Intelligent, sociable and calm-natured, these domesticated creatures are suitable friends for family members of all ages. Renowned for their soft wool, llamas are related to camels and have a long history in South America as pack animals. Reserve your adventure with a llama at the High Hampton Inn today. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and celebrating its 90th season, the inn will not disappoint. In addition to golfing and hiking with llamas, the inn offers tennis, spa services and a 35-acre mountain lake for swimming, boating and fishing. And in case you were wondering, these other activities do not include llamas. Recently, my ability to “hold it in” has been getting worse, especially at night. Is something wrong, or is this just part of getting older? You might have overactive bladder (OAB), a common condition that includes sudden urinary urges, and in some cases, incontinence. A widespread misconception is that OAB is a natural part of aging, but OAB affects people of all ages (up to 40 percent of women and 30 percent of men in the U.S.) and is treatable with lifestyle adjustments. Visit the American Urological Jenelle E. Foote, MD, FACS Association Foundation’s website, www.ItsTimetoTalkAboutOAB.org, to learn more about managing your OAB symptoms. You could possibly have a skin condition referred to as rosacea. You may have noticed that heat, spicy foods, alcohol and ultraviolet light or sunlight, may aggravate this condition. The first step in treatment is proper diagnosis from a dermatologist. Generally they will advise avoiding triggers. Depending on the individual’s condition, topical creams or ointments and possible oral medication could be prescribed. The redness itself is difficult to treat and can worsen if not treated and properly maintained. With our technology today – laser treatments have shown positive results.
Is the robot (an instrument that is controlled by a doctor to be minimally invasive) the best way to have a hysterectomy? Absolutely not. Gynecologists skilled in advanced laparoscopy can easily perform a minimally invasive hysterectomy in a non-hospital, outpatient setting and have you home within hours of the procedure. This option is even possible for patients with large fibroids or multiple prior surgeries like C-sections. Robotic hysterectomy involves more and larger incisions, longer time under anesthesia, greater post-operative pain and far greater costs.

I notice my face seems redder and it looks like I have blush on all the time. What is going on and what can I do about it?
What is the least expensive way to make your face look younger? Is it worth paying for treatments at salons and spas?
There are plenty of inexpensive ways to boost your skin’s youthful texture. I recommend patients start with a daily exfoliant treatment such as Retin-A (tretinoin, approx $70), which will both remove dead skin cell layers as well as stimulate collagen production. Because tretinoin can cause mild to moderate irritation initially, I recommend starting with a glycolic acid moisturizer or retinoid derivative such as “retinol” to allow your skin to adapt to the exfoliation more easily. As always, the first and most important intervention that requires little expense is wearing a daily sunscreen. Using at least an SPF 15 or 30 daily on your face and neck will go a long way in preventing wrinkles and sunspots.
Can I get skin cancer on my head? Skin cancer can occur anywhere on your body. Skin frequently exposed to ultraviolet light is at greater risk because the damaging rays can affect the way your skin cells reproduce and that can result in skin cancer like melanoma. The best way to avoid this is to stay out of the sun. However, I would urge people who enjoy staying out in the sun to use the broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher sunscreen regularly (the spray kind is helpful if applying to the scalp) or wear a protective hat when outdoors.

Nutrition For Your Eyes Lutein is one of only two carotenoids found in the human eye that helps protect it by absorbing potentially damaging light and safeguarding it against oxidative damage or cellular damage. This carotenoid, a plant-based antioxidant found in nature, is present in certain foods. Look for lutein in:
Leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale, zucchini, corn, kiwi and eggs. Cooking those veggies enhances lutein absorption in the body, as does adding healthy oils like olive oil or canola oil.
Eggs yolks. An egg white omelet may seem like a healthy choice, but you will miss out on eye health benefits found in the yolk. —Courtesy of Carolyn O’Neil, MS, RD, Atlanta-based dietician and author of “The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous!”

The Millard Fuller Legacy Build 2012, named in honor of Millard Fuller, creator of Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing, held its 4th annual charity effort to help build homes for families around the nation and the world. Among these selfless volunteers were several members of Atlanta Home Improvement magazine. “It was an amazing experience,” said Rachel Sirlin, an account manager at Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine. “Giving of yourself to someone who needs your help makes you appreciate what you have.” In this global and national charity event, volunteers were ready to work toward manifesting the corporation’s goal of rehabilitating at least 100 homes through Fuller Center partners. Volunteers gathered in McDonough, GA from Sept. 9-14 with hammer and nails. More than 12 dozen volunteers were rallied to provide families with decent, affordable and warm places to live. Their mission: renovating four homes. To date, Henry County has hosted the building of more than 25 homes for families in Henry County, GA. The next Legacy Build opportunity will be held next spring in Joplin, MO to help people who lost their homes during the May 2011 tornado. The difference you can make by becoming a donor
It may surprise you to learn that one organ donor can save the lives of eight people, and one tissue donor can help 50 others. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 115,000 Americans are currently on the transplant waiting list, and 18 people in the U.S. will die each day waiting for an organ. Signing up to become a donor may not be something that crosses your mind every day, but it is easier than you might think.
Becoming a donor
To become a donor, you must first enroll in your state’s donor registry. “The registry is a confidential database of donor designations,” says Kaysha Cranon, Public Affairs Coordinator at LifeLink. “If a person wishes to become an organ donor they can designate their decision when they get or renew their driver’s license or online at www.donatelifegeorgia.org.” Once you designate your decision on your driver’s license, be sure to discuss this with your loved ones so they understand your wishes. They may be asked to serve as your advocate or sign a consent form for your donation to occur. It is also important to note that there is no cost to your family for your organ donation. This cost is always paid by the recipient, usually through insurance, Medicare or Medicaid.
Who can be a donor
“There are essentially two types of organ donors: deceased donors and living donors,” explains Dr. Miguel Tan, Surgical Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at Piedmont Transplant Institute. “When it comes to deceased donors, almost anyone who has irreversible brain injury (or so-called ‘brain death’) is a potential donor.” www.bestselfconnect.com

In addition to their organs, a deceased donor can donate a number of tissues as well. “Donated tissue includes heart valves, bone, skin, corneas and soft tissue like tendons and ligaments,” Cranon says. “Donated heart valves replace damaged ones and allow the heart to function normally. Annually, more than 750,000 lives are helped through tissue transplantation.” Living donors can donate a major organ such as a kidney, as well as blood, bone marrow, stem cells and even umbilical cord blood. “To be a living donor, you need to be in pristine health,” says Dr. Carlos Zayas, a transplant surgeon at Piedmont Hospital. “Diabetes, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes or preeclampsia, a sickle cell trait (which is common in the South), or a BMI higher than 30 are the most common reasons for exclusion.” The requirements for bone marrow donors are similar to those of an organ donor. “People who have HIV or hepatitis are not eligible to donate,” says Leslie Kerns, Program Manager of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Northside Hospital. “Insulin dependent diabetes, autoimmune disorders or other significant health issues defer you from being a donor. The goal being not to transmit anything that could harm a recipient and also not to cause any increased risk to the donor.”
The donation process: What you need to know “Most patients are afraid to donate because they are fearful of pain, so the first thing to know is that the only organ that living donors can give are kidneys, partial liver transplants or partial lung transplants,” Dr. Zayas says. “Organ donation in the U.S. is highly regulated, and donors are put through extensive testing. Donors require more testing than the recipients do to ensure the reliability and function of their organs and that (the donors) will stay healthy for years after transplant.”
While some people may fear the financial implications of taking time off from work to donate, many states have enacted laws that provide paid leave for bone marrow and organ donors. “In Georgia, government employees are entitled to 30 days of paid time off to recover,” Dr. Zayas says. “You can also deduct up to $10,000 from your income taxes in Georgia if you are an organ donor.” And for people who act on behalf of a deceased donor, they can rest assured that the body of their loved one is treated with respect and dignity throughout the entire donation process. “The donor’s appearance following donation still allows for an open-casket funeral,” Cranon
says. “Once the organ or tissue recovery process is completed, the body is released to the donor’s family. From the time the donation process begins, it is usually completed within 24 to 36 hours, and the family may then proceed with funeral arrangements.”
Blood & Bone Marrow
According to the American Red Cross, someone needs blood every two seconds in the U.S., and Type O-negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients of all blood types. “You must be 18 to 65 years of age to donate blood because you have the best reserve,” Dr. Zayas says. “You must be infection free and cancer free, and free of hepatitis B, hepatitis C or active hepatitis A. You cannot have STDs or HIV, and you must have a certain body weight. Anyone with a BMI (body mass index) of less than 20 should not donate.” The blood donation process includes a mini-physical to check your temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure it is safe for you to give blood. Since the average adult has about 10 pints of blood in their body, roughly one pint is given during a donation. The entire process from the time you arrive to the time you leave takes about an hour and 15 minutes. Bone marrow donation is a bit more complex, but the need for it is just as great. “Only 30 percent of patients who need a donor transplant have access to a fully matched related donor,” Kerns says. “The others need to rely on unrelated donors to be able to have access to life saving transplants.” The first step to become a bone marrow donor is joining the Be The Match Registry at www.marrow.org. If a doctor selects you as a match for a patient, you may be asked to donate bone marrow or cells from circulating blood (called Peripheral blood cell – or PBSC - donation). “A good donor for bone marrow is different than a good blood donor,” Dr. Zayas says. “You must be between 18 and 50 because stem cells are so important for bone marrow, which decrease after age 50.” PBSC donation involves removing a donor’s blood through a sterile needle in one arm. The blood is passed through a machine that separates out the cells used in transplants, and the remaining blood is returned through the other arm. Bone marrow donation, on the other hand, is a surgical procedure in which liquid marrow is withdrawn from the back of the donor’s pelvic bones using special, hollow needles. General or regional anesthesia is always used for this procedure, so donors feel no needle injections and no pain during marrow donation.
Kidneys
“The most common solid organ donated by a living person is a kidney,” Dr. Tan says. “If there are no potential issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, a donor’s outcome after donating a kidney is excellent. The available data indicates that people can live a normal, healthy life with a single kidney, and there is no impact of how long the donor lives.” By becoming a living kidney donor, you will not only increase the supply of quality life-saving organs to those in need, but potentially reduce the costs associated with chronic kidney disease. “An increase in living donation also reduces the number of patients languishing on the waiting list and allows those who do not have living donors to ‘move up’ the list to potentially reduce their waiting time,” he says.

Real-Life Stories of Donors & Recipients Meredith Forrester After being shot during the day trader shooting in 1999, Meredith Forrester needed 115 pints of blood to save her life. Her parents were told that her chance of survival was one in a thousand. Fortunately, the blood she needed was available thanks to generous donations to the American Red Cross. Today, she is the chair of the American Red Cross Southern Blood Services Region board of directors and uses her experience to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation. “I’m extremely grateful to be alive, to have married an amazing man, to have two precious little girls and to have a fulfilling career, she says. “It’s so important to give back to the community and to teach my children the importance of doing so. Today Forrester not only organizes blood drives but also donates blood herself. “The Red Cross has made an immeasurable impact on my life. Although nothing was ever asked in return of the 115 pints of blood I received, it truly has been an honor to volunteer with them. There are so many talented, passionate and selfless people there who are committed to the mission; it’s inspiring! I hope they never get sick of me, because I plan on volunteering and donating blood until the day I die.

When Dunwoody resident Becky Springer contacted a rare bacterial infection in 2008, the condition became so lifethreatening that doctors had to amputate her hands and feet to stop her organs from shutting down. After three months in the hospital and six weeks at a rehabilitation center, she was able to return home to her husband and three young daughters. But her failing kidneys still required weekly dialysis, and in 2009, she was placed on the kidney transplant list at the Piedmont Hospital Transplant Institute. Unfortunately, none of her relatives or friends were suitable donors. Then Becky met a woman named Amy Otto through her neighborhood book club. Upon hearing Becky’s story, Amy volunteered to donate one of her kidneys to her new friend. When doctors determined that Amy was a six point (in other words, perfect) match, she didn’t hesitate to undergo the surgery to retrieve one of her kidneys. “I honestly believe God picked her. It was divine intervention, Becky says. “The fact that I found a live kidney donor was unbelievable, and the fact that she was a six Becky Springer and her point match even more unbelievable. daughter Mary Catherine The transplant was successful, and today Becky no longer requires dialysis. The two women remain close friends, and with the help of their Dunwoody book club, they have organized a fundraiser to benefit the Piedmont Transplant Institute. “Next to giving birth, giving an organ is truly the biggest and greatest gift that you can give to anybody, Becky says. “I often say that I have a beautiful kidney from a beautiful person.
Ashford Jaggernauth Ashford Jaggernauth of Marietta suffers from Berger disease, a rare kidney disorder that occurs when one of the body’s proteins that helps fight infections settles into the kidneys. As a result, he developed total kidney failure. One of his sisters donated her kidney in 1993, but earlier this year, Ashford required another transplant. He had hoped that his sister who lives in Trinidad would be a match this time, but this wasn’t the case. Ashford needed to find another donor quickly, and as luck would have it, he received a kidney just five months later. “Although I haven’t met my donor, he is truly an amazing person to donate his organ freely on behalf of someone else, he says. “I am eternally grateful to him and to the doctors who carefully chose him as a match for me. Ashford became part of what is called a “kidney chain, which starts when an altruistic donor (a healthy person who donates a kidney without a specific person in mind) steps forward. But once the donor’s kidney is given to a recipient, that recipient must have a donor willing to give his or her kidney to another stranger. Ashford Jaggernauth Fortunately Ashford’s sister was willing to help, so she flew from and his wife, Merle Trinidad to donate her kidney to another stranger in Colorado. “I am deeply indebted to my sister and my donor for their unconditional love in freely giving their kidneys and enduring much pain during their operation, all for my benefit and to allow me another chance to live, Ashford says. “Every time I think about these acts of kindness, I am overwhelmed with the extent of the care and compassion of these precious people.

collection procedure is safe for both mother and baby, usually takes less than five minutes, and can be performed immediately after the birth. But because cord blood stem cells can only be collected at birth, it is important to make your banking decision well before your due date.
Rejuvenate and Refresh Yourself for the Holidays!
“Between June 1 and December 1, 2011, more than 1450 mothers agreed to have their newborn baby’s cord blood unit collected,” says Dr. Cathy Bonk, Immediate Past Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at DeKalb Medical. “From the units that were collected, 282 units met the standards for clinical-grade units and another 1200 units distributed for research purposes. What’s more, three people in the U.S. received stem cell transplants from cord blood units collected during this time period.”
The need for minority participation
Because patients are most likely to match with someone of their own ethnicity, adding more diverse donors to the national registry increases the likelihood that all patients will find a life-saving match. Nobody knows this more than Dr. Zayas, who, just two years ago, was also a patient as he battled a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. “If you are Hispanic or Latino, there is a smaller pool of people from which they can test for a viable candidate,” he says. “In my case, it was nine months before I had a donor. We went to the international registry and found someone in Sao Paulo, Brazil, but he turned out not to be a good match. One of my brothers was a closer match than expected and good enough to go through process. Thank God we did that, because we are so blessed that I am alive.” Today Dr. Zayas is cancer-free, but he continues to devote his time to orchestrating minority group bone marrow drives though local churches and synagogues in Atlanta. He’s also spearheaded a public awareness campaign in his native Puerto Rico, and he has even gotten members of his organ transplant team at Piedmont Hospital to sign up with the international registry. “In the bone marrow world, most people will die in 60 to 90 days waiting for a donor,” he says. “For every four people to come forward to be considered for bone marrow, only one will agree to do it for a stranger. Most people only want to donate for someone they love.”
How your donation can help
Unfortunately the trend in organ donation over the last five years has been less than encouraging. “The rate of donation for both deceased and living donors has either flattened out or decreased, while the waiting list continues to grow at a rate of three to four percent every year,” Dr. Tan says. “Organ donation is an important public health issue because of the disparity between the number of patients awaiting transplantation and the number of available donors. Currently, there are approximately 100,000 patients awaiting solid organ transplantation. However, there were only 15,000 donors in 2011 (deceased and living).” So if organ donation is something you’ve ever considered, now could be the perfect time to enroll with your state’s registry. You never know – someday you could be a silent hero in the life of another person.

YogaDefined Find what is right for you By Carla Schwartz
The practice of yoga dates back thousands of years, and is still popular today for its physical and mental benefits. Yoga, which means “to join or yoke together,” aims to stretch the body and spirit through measured breathing and different poses.
Photos from Ember Hot Yoga/photography by 2TPHOTO
According to the American Yoga Association, the techniques date back more than 5,000 years, and the whole system of yoga is built on three main structures: exercise, breathing and meditation. Newcomers to yoga will see many different benefits. “After just a few classes, yoga will begin to reshape the body, working towards optimizing strength, flexibility and tuning up all of the body’s systems,” explains Jeff Sousa of Ember Hot Yoga. “However, from the first class, and then all along the way, the main benefit is just how you feel after practicing. New students notice more energy, less stress and anxiety, and increased focus.” John Merideth, the founder and director of OnlYoga adds, “Yoga can lower blood pressure, alleviate diabetes, allow better concentration, and improve overall fitness and well-being.”

What other types of life improvement do you practice? Yoga and meditation are my true loves, but I also love hiking as an alternative means to ground through my body and clear my mind. What piece of advice would you give a first-timer? Yoga is a practice. It’s a lifelong relationship that will nourish and transform you, but just like every other relationship, there are challenges. Don’t give up. Be open, have fun and try not to take yourself too seriously or give yourself a hard time, especially when you’re doing something that’s difficult. Try to approach your challenges with excitement rather than frustration. Stay devoted and work through them. I promise it’s worth it. Favorite inspirational quote, mantra or saying: A Native American wise man once said there were always two dogs inside of him fighting–a good dog and a bad dog. When asked, ‘Which one wins?’ he replied, ‘The one I feed.’
new students exploring yoga after injury. Look for something therapeutic or alignment-based.” As with any new fitness class, you are trying for the first time, make sure to speak with your primary care physician if you have any concerns about your health limitations. “Check with your doctor and talk about intentions so we can enter the journey safely together,” says Lisa Agostoni of Charmed Yoga. “It’s critical that new students tell instructors of any injuries, illnesses or medical conditions - past or present - so we can make modifications.” Yoga is not only being practiced inside studios, but also in parks and other outdoor venues
Helen Noviello I received a B.S. in health and physical education as well as numerous fitness and yoga teaching certifications, and have been working and teaching in the health, wellness and fitness industry for 35 years, teaching yoga for 25. I teach yoga at my private studio, Yoga By Helen. My very eclectic flow style of teaching is noncompetitive, spiritual and nurturing. In addition to how incredibly centered teaching yoga makes me feel, the biggest joy of sharing my love of yoga is seeing the bliss it creates in my students.
making it even more accessible. “To see people come together in an outdoor community yoga environment is an amazing experience – it connects them and grounds them,” says manager at exhale Atlanta, Anne-Marie Berte, a yogi who has taught and organized several outdoor yoga events. “I think more and more people are gravitating towards yoga because of the strong need to let go of stress, reconnect with themselves and also with others.”
Yoga Over 40 Concerned that you’ve started yoga too late in life? Instructors say not to worry. According to Arnett, yoga is for all ages, body types and fitness levels. “The most common thing I hear is ‘but I’m not flexible,’” she says. “I promise this does not matter. The purpose of class is to build flexibility and strength slowly and safely. There are as many variations of each pose as there are body types. Your teacher will find modifications that are right for you.”

What other types of life improvement do you practice? In addition to practicing yoga and meditation, I live a very holistic lifestyle including organic, whole food nutrition, organic natural cosmetics, supplements, herbal teas, aromatherapy and alternative health. I feel it is a must to get into nature for a walk everyday. What piece of advice would you give a first-timer? Yoga is about what feels good for you. Do not compare, do not compete. It is important to find your own expression of yoga and not worry about what others are doing. Yoga is a blissful practice that should always feel good. Favorite inspirational quote, mantra or saying: Words I strive to live by: “Have a smile in your heart, love and compassion in your intent finding gratitude in the gifts of each and every moment.”

Favorite inspirational quote, mantra or saying: In the words of yoga teacher, Vanda Scaravelli, “For once…be simple!”
I took my first class on a whim 12 years ago. Yoga offered me this wonderful way to move my body and get my mind to stop thinking so much. In 2004, I completed a teacher training program recognized by the National Yoga Alliance. I also completed a YogaKids Foundations course to teach children’s yoga. I currently teach Vinyasa flow style yoga at Balance Yoga and love every minute of it. What other types of life improvement do you practice? with Dr. Venus Von Mock Ask the Hypnotherapy Specialist What is Hypnosis? Hypnosis is derived from the Greek word “hypnos”, meaning to “sleep”, but in fact it is not sleep at all. A person in a state of hypnosis is deeply, physically relaxed, yet conscious. They experience a heightened sense of awareness and an intense state of concentration, much like when absorbed in reading an interesting book or watching a movie. The person is receptive to suggestion, however cannot be coerced to do anything against their will. Hypnosis is a natural state that we enter many times throughout a normal day without consciously being aware of it.

Hot yoga class at Ember Hot Yoga Agostoni believes breathwork is key for helping people of any age. “As a 40-year-old with cystic fibrosis, I recognize power and beauty in breath,” she says. “Linking breath to poses builds endurance.” There are two types of breathwork: three-part yogic breath, which helps to control breathing and increase lung capacity, and Kapalabhati, a traditional internal cleansing technique.
Trend Alert: Hot Yoga The hottest new yoga practice is simply that. Participants move through poses in 105-degree temperatures. Arnett outlines pros and cons: “Hot yoga allows muscles to stretch more than in regular temperatures, so you can access poses more comfortably. Sweating also encourages detoxification. The hot room isn’t always appropriate though.” Those with high blood pressure may want to stay away. Low blood pressure can also lead to dizziness or lightheadedness. Take your personality into consideration too. “If you are high-stress, the hot room may pull you further out of balance. If you are ‘go-with-theflow’ then a hot class could complement your personality,” Arnett says. www.bestselfconnect.com
How can clinical Hypnosis bring positive change to my life? As a Hypnotherapist, my client and I work together to remove or change limiting behaviors and thoughts to positive, productive ones. Hypnosis is simply a method to bypass the conscious mind, allowing us to reach the sources of limitations residing in the subconscious mind. Many times we are unaware of the true sources that are blocking us, mentally, emotionally, physically, and/or spiritually. My goal as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, is to remove these energetic blocks within, by addressing them at their source, and supporting positive change through positive suggestions and reinforcement. The Subconscious is a gateway to limitless possibilities for a better quality of life.

Yoga Styles If you still haven’t decided which yoga is right for you, read on to discover the differences between Ashtanga, Yin and everything in between. Hatha: The most common yoga in the United States, emphasizing poses with breathing and meditation. Try it: If you’re new to yoga and want to learn beginner’s poses, relaxation and meditation techniques to help you become more comfortable with yoga. Iyengar: May benefit those in need of physical therapy through props like blocks, cushions and straps. Try it: If you are more practiced at yoga poses, but want to gain better alignment through the use of different props. Vinyasa: Translated “to flow,” constant movement through poses creating a high-energy workout. Try it: If you find constant movement more exciting than simply stretching. This type of yoga will incorporate flow sequences like “sun salutation” into the class. Ashtanga: Meaning “eight-limbed,” a multi-pronged, demanding approach that suits ex-athletes who are used to moving quickly. Try it: If you are more independent and like to move quickly through your day, but still like to maintain order in your life, this athletic form of yoga is for you. Restorative: Incorporates the use of props to assist in relief of chronic stress, illness and injury. Try it: If you want to combine yoga with other athletic activities, and also need to stretch out sore muscles. This type of yoga uses props such as blankets to help you maintain a yoga position for 10 to 20 minutes. Yin: Highlights deepening postures, stretching connective tissues, and creating greater flexibility. Try it: If meditation or relaxation is your goal, this is the yoga for you. It is similar to restorative yoga in that the poses are held for long periods of time; however, in Yin yoga, the goal is deeper meditation. Jivamukti: This practice can involve music, scripture reading, and chanting. The emphasis is more spiritual than physical. Try it: If yoga is a more spiritual path for you than athletic, and if chanting while doing yoga doesn’t bother you. This type of yoga has been adopted by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Russell Simmons. AcroYoga: This yoga practice builds on communication, trust, and concentration to achieve acrobatic yoga sequences with two or three people. Try it: If you work well with others, are experienced in yoga, and want more of a challenge, this is the new yoga class for you. Namaste.

I found yoga in 2008 and dedicated much of my time since then to intense study. I received my certification to teach yoga from Sri Dharma Mittra in 2010 and now teach traditional Hatha Raja yoga and dynamic flowing Vinyasa classes. The light along my yogic path is made brighter by every student I come in contact with, that inspires me to teach every day.
Malia Hilliard I fell in love with yoga at 15 when my father took me to my first yoga retreat after I severely injured my back. The practice was Iyengar-based, therefore both powerful and therapeutic. Lyengar remains my greatest inspiration and after 10 years of studying, I developed my own teaching style that’s fluid, powerful, inspiring and fun. Now a Yoga Alliance Certified E-RYT-200 instructor I teach at several studios and host workshops and retreats globally. I am continually honored to witness the transformational power of yoga in my students and in myself.

Swami Jaya Devi Bhagavati
I started practicing yoga and meditation from a book when I was 14 years old and found my first yoga teacher in my early twenties. I am certified in Hatha yoga, Kundalini yoga and Kali Natha yoga. I have taught all over Atlanta, and opened my own yoga studio, Kashi Atlanta, in 1998. I am an “urban yoga monk,” having taken sanyasin (monks) vows, dedicating my life to the path of yoga philosophy and to selfless service to our community. I am inspired by my students every day. I also get inspired by leading our Yoga Teachers Training Course - I love teaching the teachers. My own teacher, Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati, inspires me with her courage and humor. What other types of life improvement do you practice? I love to meditate, chant, give, love and serve. At Kashi Atlanta, we have a Street Meals Program which feeds 20,000 people each year. We also have a Kashi KidsArt Program, where we go into the Atlanta Children’s Hospital and do art projects with the kids. And our Prison Yoga Project takes yoga and meditation into local women’s prisons. I find that so many people can benefit from the stress reducing practices both yoga and meditation offer. What piece of advice would you give a first-timer? To find your rhythm, stay aware of your breath, and do not judge, yourself or anyone else. And to enjoy the practice. Yoga is about opening up and finding your deeper connection to your heart and your spirit. Use your practice to cultivate calm presence, so you can be happier on or off the mat. Favorite inspirational quote, mantra or saying: “Learn to drink as you pour, so the spiritual heart cannot run dry and you always have love to give.” —Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati

Leah Culberson As the Managing Director of Atlanta Hot Yoga, LLC and 500HR Yoga Alliance Certified Instructor, Leah’s 11 years of teaching yields a unique blend of expertise and focus. Her signature teaching style embodies a keen attention to detail and anatomic focus, intermingled with her emphasis on breath flow as the source of strength and depth in ones practice and evolutionary unfolding. Leah is inspired to teach by her belief in the healing modality of yoga - one she’s personally witnessed through her own 14 year yoga practice. What other types of life improvement do you practice? I participated in various competitive sports as a gymnast, diver, tennis player, college cheerleader and distance runner. I am a purist and also flirt with vegetarianism with 95 percent success rate. I seek moderation as a way of life and being. I am also an avid reader and seeker of knowledge and wisdom. What piece of advice would you give a first-timer? My advice for first timers is to jump into the practice with deep reverence and belief in the innate desire of the body, mind and spirits’ desire to express, be known and heal. The practice lends itself to improvisation, which is its risk, responsibility and strength. Favorite inspirational quote, mantra or saying: “The truth will set you free.”
Healing the Body - balance, energy, flow and meditation Energetic Healing: An Alternative Path to Wellbeing Those in search of healing are turning to alternative sources when traditional medicine alone falls short. Energetic Healing practitioner Mindy Strich, founder of Healing Hearts, LLC promotes this holistic approach as a complement to conventional Western medicine. Energetic Healing is based on the idea that the human body radiates energy in a three to four foot cocoon surrounding itself. Thoughts, experiences, emotions and belief systems originate in this field and are stored in our cells. Depletions and distortions in the flow of energy can manifest as disease, illness and anxiety. Stritch says, “When you balance the flow of energy, the body uses its innate wisdom to heal itself.” Energetic Healers are trained to balance this flow by redirecting energy to areas that need it most.

Meditation: Centering the Mind and Body Meditative thinking is often overlooked in our busy schedules. However, just a few minutes of meditation per day can have positive long-term results. Leslie Clayton of Body Awareness Studio says that when we meditate even just 12 minutes each day, “we increase our memory and stimulate the area of the brain that is responsible for happiness. At the same time, we are decreasing the chemicals that cause stress and depression.” Clayton suggests meditation through movement as a form of exercise. Many exercises such as yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and Qui Jong can be practiced while meditating. Create an environment that allows you to simply be with yourself and focus while moving through these exercises. Engage in breathing through the movements. Breathwork helps practitioners achieve centered focus, Clayton says, and “from this place we can truly bring our own essence and presence forward.”

Meryl Arnett of Atlanta Hot Yoga in Buckhead and Ember Hot Yoga in Woodstock also recommends The Mat from lululemon athletica. “I’ve practiced on a Manduka Pro Lite mat for years and loved it (still do) but The Mat from lululemon is even more slip resistant and has great cushioning if you are practicing on a hard floor.”

Ask the Laser Skincare Specialist How many Skincare products do I have to use to make a difference? It’s all in the power of 3! Vitamin C serum, broad spectrum sunscreen for protection against the suns harmful rays & Retin A are all you need to begin a healthy skincare regimen.
Shady Styles If you tend to wear sunny, blonde shades for the summer months, adding lowlights can slightly change your tones to make them more suitable for the winter. You can still feel merry and bright, but not look like you’ve been on the beach all day. Make a Statement If you’re feeling bold this holiday season, channel the trendy 60s vibe of the latest Sassoon seasonal collection, HAIR!, and experiment with multi-tonal color effects. Breathing Life Into An Old Knee? It is amazing how many doctors are not aware or do not discuss the many available treatments for degenerated or arthritic joints. Simply put, the patient receives a prescription from one of many pain medications, then a corticosteroid injection and finally surgery. Next to Cardiovascular disease, Osteoarthritis is increasingly one of the most debilitating diseases out there today due to longer life expectancy, poor health habits, overweight, imbalance of joint function and overstrain. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the degeneration of the joint cartilage and bone which causes pain, swelling and limited mobility. This, in turn, negatively affects almost every aspect of life for a person suffering from this type of disease. When you think about it, we rely on our knees for just about everything, from climbing stairs and hopping into the bath tub to dancing the night away and chasing our kids around. Supartz treatment, commonly referred to as joint fluid therapy, employs a highly purified sodium hyaluronate which is very similar to synovial fluid. Synovial fluid surrounds your joints and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Research has shown that in some instances, increased synovial fluid in the joint may actually trigger healing by increasing the production of Chondrocytes, which are responsible for the production of cartilage!

PAIN FREE What We Help With: • Arthritic Joint Pain • Knee Pain • Degenerated Discs • Hip & S/I Joint Pain • Numbness & Radiating Pain • TMJ, Bursitis & Tendonitis
I fell 10 years ago and hurt my low back, my hip and my pelvis...I could not walk, drive, weight bare, sit, or barely stand. After just a few treatments, I noticed my body stabilizing... I could sleep better, walk better and continue to work...Total Health Care is the only place I will go ever again.” —Julie W.
What We Offer: • Regenerative & Integrated Medicine for Chronic Pain • Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists & Chiropractic Physicians On Staff • Regenerative Non-Steroidal Bio-Medicines (injections) • Anti-Arthritic Joint Injections Supartz® (for knees) www.supartz.com • Advanced Joint Fluid Replacement • Advanced Nerve Testing (Numbness & Tingling) • Lower Back & Neck Regenerative Disc Therapy • Non-Toxic Non-Surgical Pain Solutions That Work
Although several joint fluid therapies are available today, Supartz has a couple of things going for it that separate it from the pack: First, because Supartz has no synthetic component, the likelihood of an allergic reaction is extremely low. Further, Supartz has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid, the active ingredient that makes these types of treatments so effective. So, why have you not been told about this potentially wonderful treatment? This question is often posed and the answer is this: An orthopedic surgeon goes to school to learn surgery. Also in most cases, because of Insurance & Medicare requirements, that surgeon may not operate on a knee until he/she has attempted several non-invasive alternatives such as steroidal medications, corticosteroid injections and physical therapy. It is possible that the reason so many surgeons go through the basic steps outlined above and skip even attempting Supartz; is to qualify the patient for surgery. Keep in mind that in the United States, we do 11 times more knee surgeries than in Europe. Why? Because as one non-surgical European orthopedist said, “We in Europe focus on regeneration of the joint vs surgery.” Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover joint fluid therapy treatment. Getting together with family over the holidays presents a unique—albeit delicate—opportunity to discuss finances with your parents. We live in a society where asking people about their money is considered rude. Many families are secretive about their savings. Despite the discomfort, consider how caring for your parents financially might impact your own future financial well-being.
Stay Connected!
Regardless of family dynamics, getting a basic understanding of loved ones’ financial situations can not only help you plan your own financial future, but also make sure they are not victims of senior financial abuse.

Here’s how I suggest starting the conversation: Mom and Dad, I want to talk to you about a sensitive subject that’s really important to both of us. I’m working with a financial advisor and they asked me this question:
Treatment
Will you ever be in a position to have to care for your parents financially? I didn’t know how to answer! I love you and want to make sure I’m prepared for whatever you might need. My advisor asked me to find out the following: Do I need to be prepared for you to move in with me? Do you have long-term care insurance? If not, have you considered looking into it? Encourage your parents to update their wills and estate plan, and meet with an attorney to discuss tax planning and wealth transfer. Make sure they have a living will, and ask for durable power of attorney so that you can carry out their wishes.

Like everything else, food has a history. In the past, people were directly connected to their food supply, but now we have a near total disconnect from it. In fact, we are totally dependent on others for food, and we have not been self-sufficient with our food supply since the late 1700s. Long ago we were hunters and gatherers who searched and found food and water wherever it was present. When it was no longer available, we moved on to the next area. We were so in tune with our food that we even learned the migration patterns of animals and which plants were safe to eat. Of course, this was very healthy when available. But unfortunately it was unpredictable, and could barely sustain a small tribe. The health issue we are faced with today is that we are genetically wired to thrive on this naturally obtained fuel. Our most valuable weapon to protect ourselves from what is sold is to be a knowledgeable label reader. A few simple rules of thumb are: If it is sold in a bag or a can with a long shelf life, beware. These items are typically found in the aisles of your market. Healthier choices are usually on the perimeter of the store. Marketing slogans can be deceiving and misleading, so buyers beware. If it was previously alive, there is a good chance it could be good for you. The label reading rules are as follows: • Organic - Five digits and starts with a nine. Grown naturally with no chemicals. Think ‘nine is divine’ to quote my good friend Mikki Douglas from Planet Mikki. • Conventional - Four digits and starts with a four. Grown with chemicals and pesticides. • GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) Five digits and starts with an eight. Grown unnaturally and genetically modified.
Please refer to our website for the Specials on Laser & Botox Liposuction: $1000 per area Face Fat Transfer: Starting at $2000 Vein Sclerotherapy: $300 per hour Botox $150/area or $8/unit
Being genetically wired for thousands of years, anything not organic is recognized by the body as non-self. The body will attempt to deal with this by sequestration or elimination. An optimally functioning nervous and immune system are important here. Either way, with overload, the body eventually breaks down, and the fuse box of symptoms starts to go off.

Tread Lightly When Suspecting a Neuropathy
What is a neuropathy?
How are neuropathies diagnosed and treated?
Neuropathies are diseases of peripheral nerves, those that extend from the spinal cord to the rest of the body. There are many different types of peripheral nerves performing many different functions, and many different ways in which these nerves can be damaged. Because of this, neuropathies are a highly variable set of diseases, with different presentations and treatments.
At Midtown Neurology, we use state of the art testing techniques to identify, characterize, and treat neuropathy, starting with a comprehensive history and physical examination to clarify the timecourse of the disease and to determine which nerve populations are affected. Laboratory testing can be used to look for underlying disease, and more specialized electrical testing can be used to clarify the distribution and severity of nerve dysfunction. In some cases, microscopic analysis of small nerve fibers in the skin (a procedure known as a punch biopsy) can be used to further investigate the neuropathy.
How do I know I might have a neuropathy? Neuropathy causes different symptoms depending on which nerves are involved. Some neuropathies cause numbness, while others cause pain most typically described as burning or electrical. These symptoms are often, but not always, worse at night. Longer nerves are often affected earlier in the course of the disease, causing symptoms to appear first in the feet and then progress upwards with time. Other neuropathies cause disruption of the involuntary aspects of the nervous system, leading to irregularities in pulse or blood pressure, reduced sweating, nausea, or other GI symptoms. One other commmon symptom is imbalance, especially in dark enviroments, caused by numbness in the feet.
What causes neuropathies? Some neuropathies are caused by other diseases, most commonly diabetes, but also others including thyroid disease, vitamin deficiencies, or inflammatory disease such as lupus. Others are caused by dysfunction of the immune system which causes it to attack peripheral nerves. In some cases, a definitive underlying cause for the neuropathy is never able to be identified.
Treatment of neuropathy depends on the results of these investigations. If an underlying cause is identified, it can be treated; even in the cases in which the neuropathy cannot be reversed, this treatment can prevent progression of disease. Medications can also be used to reduce nerve irritability and counteract autonomic dysfunction, reducing the symptoms of neuropathy, even in cases where the neuropathy itself cannot be treated. Physical therapy is often helpful in cases where neuropathy causes loss of balance. Dr. Julian Bragg, M.D., Ph.D.

Kaiser Permanente Georgia Takes on The Weight of the Nation
At Kaiser Permanente,“Thrive” is more than a tagline for our advertisements— it’s our mission. Nine million people nationwide and hundreds of thousands of Georgians have chosen us to provide their health coverage and health care, and that is a responsibility we take seriously.
that premiered on HBO earlier this year. This fall, the series continues with films focused on children and families. Our goal is to raise awareness about the problem and spark conversations about solutions from living rooms to classrooms.
Through a coordinated approach to care with a focus on preventive medicine, we strive to help our members achieve total health—mind, body and spirit. But there is an epidemic weighing us down, literally. Two out of three Americans are obese or overweight, placing them at a higher risk for chronic disease. So, Kaiser Permanente is partnering with several national organizations to take on The Weight of the Nation and guide communities to total health.
How Can I View The Weight of the Nation Documentary Films?
What is The Weight of the Nation? The Weight of the Nation is a public health campaign about the impact of obesity and excess weight. It centers on a four-part documentary series Reginald Mason, MD
Kaiser Permanente of Georgia Piedmont Specialty Center www.kp.org
Reginald Mason, MD is a board-certified pulmonologist with Kaiser Permanente Georgia. A graduate of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, Mason completed his residency at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He returned to the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine to complete his pulmonary fellowship training.
Cable subscribers can view the documentaries on HBO. Check your local listings for air times. The films are also available on HBO.com and iTunes at no charge. If you would like to host a screening event, you can request a free screening kit at http://theweightofthenation.hbo.com.
What is Kaiser Permanente Doing to Support Healthy Eating and Active Living in Atlanta? Kaiser Permanente Georgia supports a number of healthy living initiatives in the metro Atlanta area through our Community Benefit program. We donated $2.5 million to develop the new Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail. The multi-use trail connecting Piedmont and Freedom parks provides Atlantans with a safe place to exercise. Kaiser Permanente Georgia also sponsors the Piedmont Park Green Market and provided grants to the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless to improve access to fresh, affordable produce.
What Steps Can I Take Now to Improve My Health? Exercise is medicine, and I prescribe it to my patients every day. Start a walking regimen—30 minutes a day, five days a week. Everybodywalk.org, a Web site powered by Kaiser Permanente, is a great resource for locating walking groups and trails in your community, as well as learning about the vast health benefits of walking.

Pay for college without going broke! Free local workshops help parents save thousands! Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they
60

NOVEMBER 2012
can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com. www.bestselfconnect.com

My name is LuAnn. I am a Nurse Practitioner and I stand on my feet all day long in my job. In the last few years, I had begun to have a lot of problems with deep aching pain and swelling in my leg. I started to have to limit my activity and the pain began to interfere with my life. I had been to several doctors who could not help me because of a complicated venous condition that I have had my entire life. Then I was referred to Dr. Prevosti. The procedures that he performed for me completely eliminated the pain and swelling. I am now able to do things that I have never been able to do before! Dr. Prevosti’s compassion and expertise in the treatments that he provides are the best in his field.

What you can’t see can take your breath away. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both women and men. The most effective way to detect lung cancer early - when it is most treatable - is through a screening. You should consider WellStar’s lung cancer screening if you are age 50 or over and have any of the following risk factors: • History of smoking • Secondhand tobacco smoke exposure • Exposure to occupational or environmental cancer-causing substances Call 770-956-STAR (7827) for more information or to schedule your lung cancer screening today.
