from the publisher Get out of your comfort zone and live! One of the hardest things to do, especially as we “grow up” or get older is to get out of our comfort zone. As human beings, we typically like to have a routine and find a great deal of comfort in doing certain familiar things on a day-to-day basis. But sometimes, it is good to shake things up. Especially if life isn’t going the way you want it to go, maybe a little change is in order. Sometimes good things happen when we challenge ourselves and get out of our comfort zone. We learn that we can achieve more than we thought we could and that doors open and things happen. So, it is with that self induced pep talk that I have taken on a new challenge. I am very nervous and definitely out of my comfort zone. I have been asked to participate in the upcoming event, Dancing Stars of Atlanta, a fundraising event benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association. My goal is to raise $10,000 to support the Alzheimer’s Association and perform at the event in June. I am honored and very nervous. I start practicing next week so if you want to get out of your comfort zone vicariously through me, check out the Best Self blog at www.bestselfatlanta/blog and I will update you on my progress (hopefully I will make some). In the meantime, we are busy planning our upcoming issues and events and we have a big event planned for June. We will be celebrating our Over 40 and Fabulous Atlantans. If you or someone you know is really fabulous...maybe they look great and take really good care of themselves or they take good care of others. We will choose 20 women and 20 men who will win prize packages and be featured in our June issue. Visit us at www.bestselfconnect.com for details and nominate someone fabulous—maybe even yourself. All the best Sherri Adair, Publisher, sadair@bestselfatlanta.com

You have choices for your cosmetic dental work. Choose wisely. Hi, I’m Dr. Debra King and for more than 20 years I have devoted my entire practice to cosmetic dentistry and helping people achieve the smile that they’ve always wanted. Whether at a school function with my kids or out in the community, I am constantly meeting people who tell me they are unhappy with their smile but haven’t addressed it because they are intimidated by cosmetic dentistry. Many are surprised to hear that while I do work with celebrity clients, I also craft custom smiles everyday for fellow parents, professionals and neighbors. The Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry offers a wide range of smile solutions, many with immediate results. If there is something that you have always wanted to change about your smile, this is the time to do it. I would like to personally meet with you and discuss how you can have the smile you have always wanted. You deserve it!

from the editor Forward March!

On March 1, 2010 the “Magazines, The Power of Print” campaign was announced, and in April nearly 100 magazines carried its message through inspirational ads. These ads championed the staying power of the magazine industry and stated boldly that magazines will not fade away in the face of the all consuming Internet, but instead continue to flourish. In fact, during the 12-year life of Google, magazine readership increased 11 percent. (Source MRI) In that vein, Best Self Atlanta also makes this commitment to our readers. We will continue to grow and bring you interesting and relevant content. As the new editor, I am so excited to be a part of the hard working team that is responsible for giving you Best Self Atlanta each month! March 31 is the deadline to submit your nomination for our Over 40 and Fabulous Atlantans feature for our June issue – so send in those submissions to editorial@bestselfatlanta.com. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out our blog at www.bestselfconnect.com/blog, which is just another great resource that brings you fun accounts of new products, news around the city and expert tips. Stay connected with Best Self Atlanta by becoming our friend on Facebook, following us on Twitter and of course, picking up the latest issue at one of our many locations around the city.

NYC Meets ATL

MODA and Motorcycles On March 20, Peachtree Street will welcome the Museum of Design Atlanta as it moves to 1315 Peachtree directly across the street from the High Museum of Art and the Woodruff Arts Center.

You love to hate them and hate to love them, whatever your feelings about comedian Jerry Seinfeld and reality TV star Bethenny Frankel, you can indulge this guilty pleasure when they both arrive in Atlanta March 12 and 11 respectively. She’s here to promote her book and he’s here to make you laugh. Either way you go, you may need to stop by Goldberg’s Deli afterwards for a pastrami on rye sandwich to complete your taste of the Big Apple!

Volunteer Opportunities The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. (JLA) is now accepting prospective member applications for its fall 2011 class. Since 1916, the JLA has been promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and providing services to the women and children of Atlanta. Informational prospective member events will be held in April and May. Any woman who is interested in volunteering is urged to attend; though RSVPs are required (registration is available on the website). For more volunteer opportunities, visit www.bestselfconnect.com Details: JLA Headquarters, 3154 Northside Pkwy., (404) 261-7799, www.jlatlanta.org

MODA’s new space, which will cover 9,000 square feet, was restored by Atlanta architects from Perkins+Will. In addition to the new space, MODA’s opening exhibition, Passione Italiana: Design of the Italian Motorcycle, will also open to the public on March 20 and will run through June 13. Marvelous Massage Relax and rejuvenate with the new Hottie Massage Bar from LUSH. This handheld bar is the perfect way to treat sore muscles to a relaxing rub after a workout. Molded with soft bumps to increase circulation, scented with a cozy Vanilla aroma and made with Black Pepper, Ginger Oil, and Jojoba your muscles are sure to feel relief from tension and aches. As with all LUSH products, the Hottie Massage Bar is eco-friendly too! Details: Perimeter Mall, 4400 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30346, (770) 394-5874, www.lushusa.com

The Power of Lavender Atlanta Hot Yoga Yoga is a great way to exercise, but when it’s done in a room heated from 95 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, for some, it’s almost too hot to handle! Hot or Bikram yoga is designed for a balanced allbody stretch that everyone can benefit from and enjoy. This unique class is offered at Atlanta Hot Yoga with locations in both Vinings and Buckhead. If you don’t think you can take the heat, you can always opt for yoga classes done in a modest 90-degree room instead.

Any doctor will tell you one of the keys to good health is a good night’s sleep and there are plenty of natural aids out there. Aromatherapist Roz Zollinger says to not underestimate the power of lavender essential oil which can help “relax the nervous system, inducing a deep state of relaxation and harmony.” Zollinger recommends adding a few drops into your bath in the evening, or placing a few drops on your pillow for a deeper and more relaxed sleep. I’m a busy professional and working mother. How can I remember to do my breast self exams?

Breast self awareness has been shown to be a valuable tool in detecting breast cancer. To help you remember to do them monthly, you can sign up for a free “BreasText” reminder. Text the word “breast” to 72239 and you will receive a text message on your cell phone each month from Piedmont Hospital’s Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center reminding you to perform your breast self exams. And don’t forget to see your primary care physician for a clinical breast exam annually.

A friend of mine looks 10 year younger and she said she had a liquid lift done. What is that?

A liquid lift is a non-surgical procedure done in the doctor’s office using a combination of facial fillers and Botox to fill in lines and smooth wrinkles. Over the years, the face begins to lose collagen and elastin which contribute to sagging facial features. The loss of facial volume and elasticity also leads to the formation of wrinkles, creases and folds. A non-surgical liquid face lift can be undertaken to accomplish any of the following: gentle lift of individual (or overall) facial features, reduced wrinkles, creases or folds, restoration of natural, curved facial contours, a more rested, energetic look and a friendlier smile.

What are the best tips for ensuring healthy teeth for your children?

First step, minimize quantity of sugar! There are zero benefits from sugar; it causes cavities and decreases your immune system, not to mention makes you gain weight. Xylitol is a perfect solution! It comes in a variety of forms (prescription rinses, candy, and other foods) that works in place of sugar and has dental benefits, including fighting bacteria and preventing tooth decay. If sugar is unavoidable, brush and rinse teeth immediately and of course, continue to get regular check-ups.

Does lack of sleep affect the health of my heart?

Sleep is an often overlooked component of heart health. Throughout the last few years, a number of studies have examined and confirmed the healthy heart benefits of a good night’s rest. On average, most people need between 7-8 hours of sleep per night. For those sleeping five or fewer hours, the chance of developing a coronary disease increases as the hours of sleep decrease. Additionally, patients living with sleep apnea, which is characterized by loud snoring with abnormal pauses in breathing during sleep, experience more heart attacks and higher blood pressure, as well as experiencing greater problems with weight management.

What is predictive health? What can I do to learn about my health?

Health can be measured in many ways, including looking at markers that can detect very early “unhealth” in key areas - oxidative stress, inflammation, immune function and regenerative potential. Where there is a potential problem, predictive health aims to intervene at the very earliest point to restore healthy function and prevent disease. A key element of success is a collaborative relationship with a health partner, where support is provided to develop a personalized plan. A personal profile is the first step in developing a healthy lifestyle to restore, maintain and optimize health. Dr. Kenneth Brigham Piedmont Healthcare

Marcus Autism Center

At The Forefront in The Fight Against Autism By Amy Meadows

For years, parents have known that when their child reaches the age of two, their pediatrician will begin asking serious questions about his development. Does he use two-word phrases? Does he respond to his own name? Does he play well with others? These seemingly simple questions help identify possible symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders, a range of neurodevelopment disorders. These inquires are a vital effort made by doctors nationwide, as 1 in 110 children across the country is affected by autism and related disorders, with 1 in 98 children being affected in Georgia.

Executive Director Don Mueller and Founder Bernie Marcus interacting with children at the Center.

However, for the dedicated staff at the Marcus Autism Center, the largest and most comprehensive center in the Southeast, waiting until a child turns two years old is just too long to wait. That’s why the Atlanta-based non-profit organization, which provides treatment for children with autism and related disorders, is resolutely leading the charge in advancing scientific knowledge on the social mind, social brain and the genetic and neurobiological underpinnings of social development.

“The causes of autism are by and large prenatal, but the syndrome is instantiated in the first two years or so of life. There is a time for intervention in which we believe one can alter the very course of the disorder. That is one of our major areas of activity—to create the tools to identify autism as early in life as possible so that one can interfere with the development of the disorder,” explains Ami Klin, PhD, director of the Marcus Autism Center, which is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “One of our main research goals is to transform Atlanta into the nation’s capital for early diagnosis and intervention. Autism is a lifelong disorder. Early diagnosis—we are focusing on the first year of life—makes early intervention possible, which has been shown to significantly attenuate, and maybe in some cases, prevent autism from developing.” Of course, while research aimed at achieving major breakthroughs in the fight against autism is an important focus for the Center, it is just one aspect of the incredible work that the organization does every day to support children with autism and their families. Providing diagnostic and treatment services for the entire spectrum of autism-related disabilities, the center works with every patient on an individual basis to address his particular issues.

Want to get involved in the fight against autism? Break out your walking shoes on Sunday, May 22, for the 2011 Georgia Walk Now for Autism Speaks. The funfilled, family-friendly event, which gets underway at International Plaza at the Georgia World Congress Center, is one of the prime fundraising efforts for Autism Speaks, the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and opening ceremonies commence at 11 a.m. Visit www.walknowforautismspeaks.org to learn more about joining the walk and beginning your own fundraising initiative.

Today, more than 4,000 children each year are successfully treated by Marcus’ staff of highly trained pediatric professionals, who are supported by research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “The staff at Marcus is united and energized by a common mission: to offer the best science of clinical care in order to address the needs of children with autism and their families, one at a time.” Klin says, adding that staff members work closely with a child’s family, school system and surrounding community to evaluate and treat him effectively while helping him achieve his potential for growth. What’s more, the staff also collaborates with experts at sister organizations like the Emory University School of Medicine and the Emory Autism Center, the CDC, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Atlanta Autism Consortium to further the efforts of the autism community. “We are at a critical crossroads in our field. We have the knowledge and the tools to radically alter the natural course of autism in children, bringing about changes in their lives that will have beneficial and lifetime consequences,” Klin concludes. “The Marcus Autism Center is at the forefront of an effort to make this knowledge and tools work for the community at large. The confluence of commitments and resources is unique, and we cannot squander this moment.” For more information, visit www.marcus.org. www.bestselfconnect.com

pring is here at last, and there’s no better time to enhance your appearance than now. Whether

you’re a 20-something looking for simple makeup tips, a 30something in need of rejuvenation, or a 40-something (and beyond) considering more advanced cosmetic procedures, it’s time to reveal a new and improved you. ‘Tis the season for a spring makeover and a confidence boost—our experts uncover basic tips, advanced treatments, and more in-depth procedures that will revitalize your eyes, skin, brows, lashes and lips.

The Eyes Have It

It has been said that the eyes are the window to a person’s soul. What’s more, they play a fundamental role in first impressions. As a person ages, he or she often acquires a ‘sunken eye’ appearance, which includes thinning fat pads, dark circles and crow’s feet. Droopy and sagging eyes are often associated with sadness, fatigue or even anger. The following tips will help reverse the signs of aging eyes and keep them looking well-rested and happy.

Basic Eye Care • More Water, Less Salt – According to Robert A. Colgrove, Jr., MD, of the Vinings Surgery Center, “Drinking an adequate amount of water will help keep the skin around the eyes looking youthful.” Colgrove recommends drinking 1–2 liters of water every day. Water helps to plump the skin around the eyes and return its suppleness, thus reversing dark circles and sunken eyes. Additionally, limiting one’s salt intake can reduce water retention and decrease puffiness around the eyes. • Get Enough Sleep – While most people recognize the benefits of getting a sufficient amount of sleep every night, they often disregard them. “The most common complaints about the appearance of one’s eyes are typically dark circles underneath www.bestselfconnect.com

the eyes and puffiness around the eyes,” says Fernando D. Burstein, MD, of Atlanta Plastic Surgery. “When not a product of genetics, this is often the result of sleep deprivation.” Burstein suggests seven to nine hours of sleep per night for the average adult. • Bright Eyes Serum – To improve the skin’s texture around the eyes, as well as the appearance of dark circles, plastic surgeon Marisa Lawrence, MD, who practices at The Doctor’s Centre at Northside Hospital, recommends her own prescription-strength serum called Bright Eyes. “Bright Eyes contains a combination of retinol to reduce wrinkles and arnica with vitamin K to reduce discoloration. The green tea polyphenol base protects the delicate eyelid skin from free radical damage and provides anti-inflammatory benefits to reduce puffiness of the eyelids,” says Lawrence. The cost per bottle is $75 and lasts up to six months. • Sunscreen for the Face – We’ve all done it: slathered on sunscreen that not only protected our face from the sun’s rays, but also made our eyes sting for days post application. Sunscreen is by far one of the best ways to preserve the skin underneath your eyes, but use a product that is especially formulated for the face. • Makeup Tips – Makeup can work wonders for your eyes, making them appear brighter and more youthful. Alyson Hoag, founder and CEO of Authentic Beauty, has been a professional makeup artist and brow specialist for over 20 years. She advises women to steer clear of eye shadow that is several shades darker than their skin tone. “Darker colors have a tendency to make the eyes look even more sunken,” she notes. Hoag also suggests smiling when applying eye makeup to keep product from settling into fine lines, keeping Model: Kathi Thames, Makeup: Leslie Hines, Hair and photography: Richie Arpino eye liner to a minimum, and watching the amount of contour used in the crease of eyes. Advanced Eye Care • Cosmetic Injectables – If you’ve tried the aforementioned basic eye care tips but still can’t seem to get the results you want, you may want to try more advanced treatments. Injectable fillers offer a relaxed, more youthful appearance around the eyes and can last anywhere from three to six months. According to Burstein, “Botox and Dysport can be injected into wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, causing the facial muscles to relax and smoothing the appearance of undesired fine lines and wrinkles.” Lasting approximately three to four months, they also help to prevent new wrinkles from forming. Botox and Dysport cause minimal redness post treatment, and patients can resume their daily routines immediately. • Youth Eye Complex – Marcia V. Byrd, MD, of Byrd Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Center, suggests Youth Eye Complex by iS Clinical (starting at $85). excess skin and fat around the eyes to restore the shape of the eyelid and reduce puffiness, drooping and wrinkling. The result is a sharper, kinder and more relaxed look. “Blepharoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia in an outpatient setting,” Lawrence notes. “Possible side effects include temporary swelling, bruising and blurred vision.” Patients are generally able to return to their normal activities within five to seven days, and contact lenses may be worn after two weeks. “Blepharoplasty may be combined with a brow lift if sagging forehead skin is contributing to the excess upper eyelid skin,” Lawrence adds. On average, eyelid surgery costs between $4,000 and $5,000. • Fat Grafting – Fat grafting is an eye rejuvenation procedure that provides a well-rested look. “Fat grafting fills in depressions along the bony rim of the upper and lower eyelids,” Colgrove says. “The cost ranges anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000, and the recovery process is approximately one week. While pain is minimal, patients should expect bruising for up to two weeks,” he adds. Results vary but are typically permanent. BEST SELF Atlanta

Simply Skin Care

When you think spring, you likely think of renewal. The beautiful colors and changing temperatures beckon those indoors to step out and celebrate the new season. Just as spring is like a blank canvas, so is your skin. Stay clean, fresh and soft with these skin care tips from our experts. You’ll be surprised at how a little nurturing goes a long way.

Basic Skin Care • Remain Hydrated – Similar to the skin around your eyes, your skin greatly benefits from plenty of water. Eight, 8-ounce glasses of water is an adequate amount. Because your body is comprised of 60 percent H2O, you must continuously keep hydrated. Water has many advantages, including cleansing your body of toxins, providing nutrients to cells and improving your circulation. “Coconut water is very hydrating for those individuals who don’t like the taste of water,” says Cici Coffee, founder and CEO of Natural Body Spa & Shoppe. In essence, a healthy body reveals a flawless complexion. • Healthy Foods for Healthy Skin – Even healthier than what you put on your body is what you put in it. There are many delicious foods that your skin loves also. “Make sure you ingest good fats, such as avocado, almonds and salmon,” Coffee says. Other beneficial foods include blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, flax seed, essential fatty acids (i.e. omega 3 and omega 6), healthy oils, whole wheat bread and green tea.

• Avoid the Sun, Use Sunscreen – The sun emits two forms of ultraviolet radiation: UVA, which accelerates the aging process, and UVB, which causes sunburn. Both types are detrimental to your skin and your health. Try to keep out of direct sunlight as much as possible, but if it is inevitable, use sunscreen. “I recommend using a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide, avobenzone or mexoryl,” notes Gabrielle Sabini, MD, of North Atlanta Dermatology. • Anti-Aging Products – Don’t be fooled by skin care gimmicks and products that claim to stop the aging process altogether. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Still, there are many anti-aging products on the market that really do what they promise: slow the aging process. Look for creams, serums, lotions and moisturizers with hyaluronic acid, retinol, antioxidants, peptides and resveratrol. “I suggest using a topical vitamin C and vitamin A derivative,” adds Sabini. • Microdermabrasion and Superficial Chemical Peels – Microdermabrasion and mild chemical peel applications (like glycolic peels or salicylic peels) are great tools for rejuvenating facial skin. “As you age, the skin cells’ turn-over rate slows and causes a build-up of dead cells on the surface, which can lead to a dull, tired appearance,” says Patricia Daniel, RN, co-owner of Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center. Microdermabrasion uses gentle, instrument-assisted exfoliation to slough the dead cells from the skin and stimulate growth of newer, younger-looking skin cells underneath. “Chemical peels work in much the same way, except they utilize a chemical reaction produced by a topical solution instead of the physical reaction produced by rubbing,” Daniel comments. “Both microdermabrasion treatments and chemical peels are not only effective anti-aging procedures, but they also minimize the appearance of acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and sun spots,” she notes.

In-Depth Skin Care

• Micro-Laser Peel – If your skin shows moderate signs of aging, a microlaser peel is worth looking into. “Stronger than microdermabrasion or a mild chemical peel, which typically only induce shedding of one epidermal layer, micro-laser peels can offer minimal-to-full epidermal exfoliation. The results include a minimized appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, enhanced skin elasticity, improved moderate scarring and overall radiant skin,” Daniel says. Because micro-laser peels are laser procedures, they typically require two to four days of recovery and cost between $500 and $1,000. • Dermal Fillers – Contrary to popular belief, dermal fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, and Sculptra not only spot-treat fine lines, but they fill the area as well. These are a cost-effective, minimally invasive way to reduce wrinkles and replace soft tissue loss. “Fillers seem to induce production of collagen in many people, leading to much longer-lasting effects,” Sabini says.

• Laser Skin Resurfacing – According to Daniel, “Fractionated CO2 laser skin resurfacing or Erbium laser resurfacing produce dramatic rejuvenation results without the downtime and enhanced risks posed by facial rejuvenation surgery.” These lasers have the ability to precisely target and treat certain problem areas like wrinkles and sunspots, without damaging the skin around them. “Depending on the size of the areas to be treated, most laser rejuvenation patients require a series of three, 15–20 minute treatments, followed by seven to 14 days of limited sun exposure,” Daniel says. Fractionated CO2 and Erbium laser treatments range anywhere from $200–$1,500. • Tricholoracetic Acid (TCA) Chemical Peel – Much more aggressive than an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) chemical peel, a TCA chemical peel uses acetic acid to remove the outer layer of skin, or epidermis. underlying skin, which is newer and smoother in texture, is then revealed. The recovery period of a TCA peel is approximately five to seven days, and often includes redness, swelling, crusting and lastly, peeling. • Facial Rejuvenation – This term can cover a variety of procedures from microdermabrasion to face lifting. If you are considering a face lift, there are several options available to you. “My primary advice is to take the time to find the right surgeon,” says Mark M. Beaty, MD of Milton Hall Plastic Surgery. “Face lifting is a very individualized procedure requiring a thorough understanding of problems and goals by both the patient and the surgeon.” Beaty also points out that there have been certain advances for this procedure. “Advances in suture types, tissue sealers and laser technology have opened the door to effective face lifting through more limited incisions,” says Beaty, “Additionally, the use of injectable filler techniques to augment the results of face lift procedures can enhance results substantially.”

Beautiful Brows

Not everyone has the financial means or the desire to undergo plastic surgery. But, everyone has the ability to keep brows looking shapely and youthful. In fact, a few simple maintenance measures can give your brows the look of a lift. These eyebrow secrets could transform your tired eyes into ones that sparkle with energy. Just remember to follow instructions carefully— one wrong move could mean the difference between clean-cut and downright clownish.

Basic Brow Care • Tweezing – So long as you pluck precisely, tweezing is the best way to groom the brows. “Good quality tweezers, like the ones made by Tweezerman, are an absolute must for optimum results,” says Evie Delaney, owner of The Nouveau Clinic. “Soften the skin in the brow area prior to tweezing with warm water, which makes the hair easier to remove and the process less painful,” she adds. (The ideal time to tweeze is right after you take a shower). To avoid making mistakes or over-tweezing, use a sharpened brow pencil to draw your desired brow shape prior to tweezing. Use the drawn brow as your template to guide the process. “Take your time,” advises Delaney. “Removing too much hair can make brows look skimpy and permanently damage the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss.” After tweezing, calm the skin by rinsing with cool water, and then apply a light moisturizer or natural botanical skin oil to the area. Extra sensitive skin may require cold compresses to reduce redness or puffiness. • Coloring – For further enhancement, Hoag recommends coloring your brows. “Get your brows to enhance your eyes by either coloring them to be a half shade darker than your hair or using a brow fill product such a Wonderbrow and getting them sculpted to work with the angles of your face,” Hoag says. • Clear Brow/Lash Mascara for Unruly Brows – Train unruly eyebrows by using clear brow mascara or clear lash mascara. Delaney recommends applying at night before bedtime or immediately after drawing brows in with brow pencil. “Use the tip of the wand to comb brows in the desired direction and allow the gel to set. Brow mascara will hold brows in place without feeling sticky or looking obvious. With consistent daily use, the brow hair will eventually grow in the direction you want them to grow,” she notes. • Small Cuticle Scissors to Trim Brows – To tame wild hairs that www.bestselfconnect.com

Model: Brenda Sottile, Hair and Makeup by Authentic Beauty: photo courtesty of Amy Hunsinger, Sing Photography

grow outward or upward, Delaney suggests using small cuticle scissors. “The curved shape of the scissors permits you to follow the natural shape of the eyebrow without making mistakes, and their small size makes them easy to maneuver around the eye area,” she says. Prior to trimming, comb brows backward and then upward with a brow brush. Trim just the hair that extends beyond the natural brow line. (Tip: use a touch of hair spray to hold unruly hair up while you are trimming.)

Advanced Brow Care • Permanent Eyebrow Enhancement – Permanent eyebrow enhancement is the perfect cosmetic solution for men and women who struggle with thinning or uncontrollable brows due to aging, illness or over-tweezing. A trained, permanent makeup artist can restore and restyle the eyebrows in just one hour—and the results can last anywhere from 18 months to three years. “Professionally applied, permanent brow artistry mimics naturally growing brow hair and eliminates the need for daily eyebrow cosmetics. Results are immediate and the procedure requires no downtime,” Delaney says. The healed brows look completely natural and remain in perfect shape. Cost for this service ranges between $395 for spot fills, $495–$595 for medium fills, and up to $695 for a full eyebrow restoration. Permanent eyebrow enhancement is also ideal for individuals with complete brow loss from chemotherapy treatment, illness or hormone imbalance. Another way to enhance disappearing brows is Micropigmentation, or a cosmetic tattoo, recommends Morgan. “This procedure can redefine your brows with the color and shape you want.” BEST SELF Atlanta

In-Depth Brow Care • Brow Lift – To replace your troubled look with a more refreshed appearance, a brow lift could be your best bet. “An endoscopic, minimally invasive brow lift involves making small incisions in the scalp and lifting excess skin and muscles to raise the brows and smooth forehead wrinkles. Also referred to as a forehead lift, a brow lift provides the eyes with a more youthful, alert appearance,” Burstein says. The recovery process for a brow lift is typically quick and easy, with slight swelling, bruising and minor discomfort.

Lush Lashes

Most women long for lush lashes, and will go to great lengths to get them. Because the eyes are generally the first feature people notice when they first meet you, it’s important to nurture them. And your lashes are no exception. Full, lush lashes—like the ones Kim Kardashian and Jessica Alba flaunt—exude sex appeal and youthfulness. Additionally, they make your eyes appear more alert. The following tips reveal how to get the luring lashes you so desire.

Basic Lash Tips • Remove Makeup Every Night – “The tip to full lashes is to take care of them by properly removing eye makeup each night before bedtime,” says Feleshia Sams, owner of Atlanta Ink and Lash. “Only use cleansers that are intended for the eye area.” Natural makeup removers are gentler on the skin. For example, take off eye makeup by dipping a cotton ball or Q-tip into Burt’s Bees baby oil. Try to avoid harsh rubbing and tugging on the lashes. • Lash Conditioner – A lash conditioner will help keep your eyelashes strong and healthy in between mascara applications. Sams notes, “Use a clean mascara brush to apply either almond oil, castor oil or extra virgin olive oil to your lashes. Or, apply an eyelash conditioner to your fingertips and massage it into your eyelashes.” RevitaLash Eye Conditioner’s proprietary blend of proven cosmetic ingredients, powerful peptides and calming botanicals help nourish and grow the lashes. • Lash Curler – Open your eyes significantly by simply curling the lashes with an eyelash curler. “First, make sure the pads of the lash curler are not loose, as it will place extra pressure on your lashes. Place your top lashes in between the opening of the curler and get close to the base of your lashes (without touching your skin). Gently close and release the lash curler. Then, move toward the end of your lashes and repeat the opening-and-closing method,” advises Sams. Finally, apply mascara to help freeze the curl.

Advanced Lash Care • Eyelash Perming – Eyelash perming is a safe, quick and simple process that takes about 45 minutes and lasts up to two months (or the natural growth cycle of your eyelashes). “Using chemicals to keep your curled eyelashes in place, eyelash perming can dramatically open up the eyes and give the appearance of longer, fuller lashes,” Sams says. Perming is beneficial for both men and women who experience random lash growth, or whose lashes are too curly or too straight. • Eyelash Tinting – Eyelash tinting is a safe and quick procedure that involves vegetable dye. “Compared to mascara, eyelash tinting looks very natural. It is ideal for individuals with light brows and lashes, www.bestselfconnect.com

or for those who have altered their natural hair color and want their eyebrows and eyelashes to match,” Sams comments. Eyelash tinting lasts between four to six weeks.

In-Depth Lash Care · Eyelash Extensions – Unlike traditional false eyelashes that only last one day and are applied by a strip, synthetic eyelash extensions are glued to a person’s eyelash hairs one-by-one using tweezers. The process takes approximately two hours, and the extensions last about two months. “Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are the most natural-looking faux lashes. Because they are water-resistant, wearers may swim, exercise and shower without worry,” says Sams. · Eyelash Growth Serum – Eyelash growth serums are unique eyelash conditioners that help you achieve beautiful lashes. “Latisse is the first and only FDA-approved prescription treatment for fuller, thicker and longer eyelashes. Latisse is applied nightly and works gradually to produce desired results in just 16 weeks. The solution must be used continually to maintain lash length and texture, and the cost is $99 per two-month supply,” Lawrence says.

The Perfect Pout

Beautiful, sexy lips typically do not come naturally, unless you’re Angelina Jolie. But thanks to plumping products, injectable fillers, lip implants and more, we can look as if they’re ‘au natural.’ As we age, our lips lose their fullness and vigor, and laugh lines begin to set in. The cosmetic industry has made great strides to reverse the signs of aging lips—find out how you, too, can get that perfect pout. BEST SELF Atlanta

Basic Lip Care • Quit Smoking – Need we say more? • Keep Hydrated – As with the eyes and the skin, your lips benefit from adequate water intake. Drinking at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water per day will keep your lips supple and soft. • Lip Moisturizer with an SPF – “Because we can’t avoid sun all the time, it helps to use a lip moisturizer with an SPF of 15, and then put on your lipstick or lip gloss over it. I recommend Burt’s Bees Res-Q Lip Balm SPF 15, which protects your lips from sun, wind and snow,” says Elizabeth Morgan, MD.

Advanced Lip Care • Lip Plumpers – Lip plumpers cause the lips to swell temporarily by irritating them and thus, increasing the blood flow. Many also contain collagen and hyaluronic acid (found in injectable fillers), but there is no evidence these have any effect in this form. “A lip plumper is applied like a lipstick, smoothing it onto your lips. However, some people are allergic to these products, so test it out on your hand before you buy,” Morgan says. • Dermal Fillers – If you’re looking for a subtle lip enhancement, dermal fillers help plump the lip tissue and provide the desired aesthetic. According to David M. Whiteman, MD, of Southern Plastic Surgery, “The most common dermal injectables used for lip enhancement include hyaluronic acid-based products like Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane. These treatments involve simple, 15-minute symmetrical injections into the lips after preparation with a local anesthetic, if needed. Most lip rejuvenation patients notice positive lip enhancement for up to a year following their initial treatment.” Adds Morgan, “Dermal fillers should look completely natural—the ‘overdone’ look is the result of having too much filler injected. In the lips, a little goes a long way.”

MILTON HALL P LASTIC S URGERY

Atlanta’s Trusted Plastic Surgeons for Over 10 Years.

In-Depth Lip Care • Lip Implants – “Lip implant surgery is appropriate for lip enhancement patients who desire a permanent change to their lips instead of the temporary change injectables produce. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon will typically use localized anesthesia to numb the area. Next, he or she will make a series of small incisions on either side of the lip and insert a synthetic material that emulates the texture of collagen (without the allergy implications of naturally derived collagen),” says Whiteman. Patients may experience mild discomfort for the first couple of days following treatment, and swelling and bruising for up to one week.

THE CHARGE AGAINST CHILDHOOD OBESITY Prevention and care will save the health of our youth By Jeyme Colodne

C

hildhood obesity, which was once labeled as a “problem,” is now being called an epidemic and all over the news, from talk shows to medical reports, experts are saying the same thing: children are not healthy and we need to do something about it. How does a problem become an epidemic? In 2004, children

who were overweight were considered a “growing concern” in the medical field as they began developing weight-related diseases like diabetes at a younger age. This elevated concern with the diet of children has caused everyone from First Lady Michelle Obama to local activists to stand up and demand change. www.bestselfconnect.com

Although we should already be familiar with some of the culprits of childhood obesity, (poor diet and lack of exercise), many people are not and the statistics coming from the Center for Disease Control, as well as other institutes are alarming. The CDC has determined that obesity, behind the use of tobacco products, is the second leading contributor to premature death in the United States. Other studies released from the CDC show the prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 years increased from 6.5 percent in 1980 to 19.6 percent in 2008. According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, with Georgia’s children ranking in as some of the heaviest in the country. Thankfully, the CDC is not the only institution taking notice, and action has slowly been building over the past few years to bring about solutions.

A History of Attempted Change The issue of childhood obesity has had a long history of champions who have tried to lead the way and shine light on the subject. Long before Michelle Obama began speaking about the state of children’s health; Sen. William Frist and Sen. Edward Kennedy were also trying to bring about change. In 2004 they presented two bills to Congress; the Prevention of Childhood Obesity Act and the Childhood Obesity Reduction Act respectively. Both called for action to be taken to prevent childhood obesity within homes, schools, and communities. Neither of the bills made it out of committee for a full vote.

According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, with Georgia’s children ranking in as some of the heaviest in the country.

Then in 2005, former President Bill Clinton joined forces with the American Heart Association to form The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, whose goal is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015 and to empower children nationwide to make healthy lifestyle choices. Today, changes continue to be made. On Dec. 13, 2010, President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which aims to promote health and reduce childhood obesity. Among some of the things it will tackle is providing better nutritional quality of school meals, establish national nutrition standards for all foods sold at schools and connect more kids to local produce through farm-to-school programs. Michelle Obama also introduced her Let’s Move campaign, a nationwide initiative that focuses on helping parents get the information they need to make healthy food choices at home, improve the quality of food in the school system, improve access and affordability of healthy food, and finally, increase physical education for kids. It seems like everywhere you look, different people are taking an interest. TV shows like Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution have sprung up showcasing the need for healthier diets for kids, and on a more global level The Aruba Ministry of Health and Sports has announced that it will host the first-ever Pan American Conference on Obesity with Special Attention to Childhood Obesity on June 8-11, 2011. Even here in Atlanta, advocates are joining forces to bring awareness to the issue.

On the Local Level Although the path to change is an evergrowing one, it is important to note that the change is coming on both a national level and a local one. Recently, local movers and shakers brought attention to the topic in a big way at the Enlightenment Luncheon Series, cochaired by child advocate and philanthropist, Stephanie Blank, environmental activist and eco-living expert, Laura Turner Seydel and philanthropist, Lisa Rayner Tush and hosted by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University Department of Pediatrics. “The main purpose of our Enlightenment Luncheon series is to raise awareness on children’s environmental health issues,” explains Tush, “I think it’s sad that obesity has made its way into a health issue. It speaks volumes on the change in our nation as a whole.” The event invited experts from Georgia Organics, the CDC and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital to speak on the subject. One of them was Medical Director of Child Wellness at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital Dr. Stephanie Walsh, who has over 18 years of experience in treating children with obesity. “The crisis of childhood obesity is the responsibility of every Georgia citizen,” says Walsh. “As a society, we need to take ownership and act immediately on this issue for the sake of the future health of Georgia’s population. I stay positive about this cause because childhood obesity is preventable and curable.” Another expert on the panel, Executive Director at Georgia Organics Alice Rolls echoes this outlook that change is possible. “I think we’ve reached a tipping point, not only on the scales, but on acceptance and understanding of the long

The Power To Change

“The food industry has not been a laudable ally in healthy eating and our food landscape is littered with bad food.” Georgia Organics’ work with the Dekalb Board of Health on a study on two neighborhoods in south DeKalb County revealed that between 70 and 80 percent of the food outlets lacked fresh fruits and vegetables.

After taking a look at the facts and numbers over the past few years, the most important thing to remember is that we have the power to make a difference in our own homes. We cannot simply rely on the food industry alone to provide us with healthy choices, sometimes we must go outside conventional super markets and take a greater interest in where our food is coming from. “We have to look in the mirror because in the end it boils down to personal responsibility,” says Rolls,

Despite the seemingly uphill battle we face, many local companies and schools are taking part in an expanded push forward to make a difference in the community and make healthier food more readily available to children. One of them is the nationally known Farm to School program, now operating in 50 states, that according to its website, “connects schools (grades K-12) and local farms with the objectives of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias, improving student nutrition,

term consequences of this epidemic,” says Rolls, “If we are armed with the knowledge of this issue we can start to make changes in our own homes to help our children live healthier lives.”

“Changing your food habits is a journey that takes time. But there are a tremendous amount of resources and information to help people along the way,” says Alice Rolls. Here are just a few tips Rolls suggests. • Find local food growers in your area • Support restaurants that support local farmers • Attend culinary demonstrations at farmers markets, food events and workshops to have a better understanding of where your food is coming from. Georgia Organics annual conference will host 12 farm and food tours, 42 educational workshops, and more on March 11-12, 2011 in Savannah . • Start your own garden! www.bestselfconnect.com

providing agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities, and supporting local and regional farmers.” Rolls adds, “Locally, Georgia Organics is now working with five school districts and a Farm to School Alliance to grow these programs statewide.” Additionally, groups like Oakhurst Community Garden and Truly Living Well Urban Farms are helping to show people that it’s easy to eat healthy, delicious food and help support the people that grow it. Other local programs include PowerUp! which formed in February 2010 to combat Georgia’s childhood obesity through behavior modification regarding physical activities and health and nutrition education. Led by the Resurgens Charitable Foundation, the PowerUp! initiative includes a combination of efforts from organizations such as the Georgia PTA, YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta, the Georgia Department of Education, and many more. We all have the power to change our eating habits and that change begins at home and is carried through the school system as well. “Every school, including preschools, should have an edible garden in place so students can learn all they can about healthy food,” says Seydel, “Captain Planet Foundation has been instrumental in establishing these gardens at many of our local schools, ultimately helping students become more engaged about the foods they eat, more aware of the food choices they make and more willing to adopt a healthy food diet.” Teya Ryan, GPB Media President & Executive Director believes in the power of media as well to help keep parents and families informed. “It’s important that parents and caregivers are educated about health issues, and that’s why I believe that our GPBeWell initiative is such a vital resource,” explains Ryan, “GPB is using all of our television, radio and web platforms to promote healthy lifestyles and provide resources that parents and caregivers can use with their children.”

Looking Ahead With all the local and national level programs and awareness initiatives in place, it’s easier now more than ever to make the right decision about what you and your children eat. The most important change begins when you make the choice to eat healthy, exercise and lead by example.

Tips from CDC for Parents • Encourage healthy eating habits by providing healthy food options and making them readily available. • Look for ways to make favorite dishes healthier. • Remove calorie-rich temptations. • Encourage kids to stay active and enjoy some form of physical activity or participate in sports. • Reduce sedentary time such as time in front of the TV.

“It’s important for everyone to be aware because reversing this crisis requires support and help from everyone,” says Stephanie Blank, “Even if you don’t have kids or your family is not touched directly by obesity, the entire country is on the hook for the consequences. We are all in this together.” The time for action is now. You have the power to positively encourage your kids to eat healthy and make sure they stay active. Just last month, Michelle Obama came to Georgia and spoke at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta in celebration of the first year anniversary of the Let’s Move campaign. She reflected that although there is still much to do, we should all remain positive. She reminded the crowd that, “We have a voice and when we come together and use that voice we can change things. So keep using that voice and keep demanding better health for your kids.”

Smart Summertime Salads Learn more about getting your greens By Jennifer Fox, RD, LD Fresh salads can be an excellent summertime meal option as either a main entree or an accompaniment to your main course. Composed primarily of non-starchy vegetables, these are the lowest in calorie of all food groups. One serving of non-starchy vegetables is equal to one cup raw or a half cup cooked. A serving contains only 25 calories but provides a significant amount of fiber, and is cholesterol-free and fatfree. This means that salads can be a great way to fill you up at mealtime without loading down your diet with excessive calories. The base of all great salads starts with your selection of lettuce, so it’s important that you know your lettuce.

Are some people hard to buy for?

Butterhead (Boston, Bibb and Buttercrunch)- this lettuce boasts loose heads with grassy green leaves with a buttery texture.

Crisphead (Iceburg)– this lettuce has a crispy, crunchy texture with cold leaves. This lettuce forms dense, tight heads with a mild flavor similar to cabbage and has a high water content with little nutritional value. 11:36:59 A

Looseleaf (Oak leaf, Red leaf, and Green leaf)- this lettuce is joined at the stem, thereby not forming a lettuce head. Its leaves are mildly flavored.

Romaine (Cos)- this lettuce forms a long head of sturdy leaves with a firm rib down the center. This has been a popular texture choice for traditional Greek or Caesar salads.

Spinach or Arugula leaves Small, flat leaves with longer stems. Extremely rich in antioxidants and excellent source of Vitamin K, Vitamin A, manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, Vitamin C, riboflavin, calcium, potassium, Vitamin B-6, tryptophan, Vitamin E, copper, phosphorus and zinc. Salads in general are a low-calorie food and good source of many vitamins and minerals, however, it is possible to sabotage a healthy salad by loading it up with high-fat, high-calorie items such as cheese, bacon bits, croutons and creamy dressings.

my nutrition Follow these steps to build a healthy salad: 1. Start with a good base of salad greens. In general, choosing darker leaves will mean your greens are higher in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. 2. Add additional non-starchy vegetables for added health benefits and taste variety. 3. Choose a lean protein source such as grilled chicken or fish, boiled egg whites, low-fat cheese (cheese with 3 grams of fat or less per ounce), chopped soy burger or cooked beans. 4. Add a little fruit for a natural sweet addition. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries or strawberries are high in antioxidants. 5. Top salad with heart healthy fats such as unsalted nuts, seeds, low-fat salad dressings, canola or olive oil. Watch your portion size, since these fats are the most concentrated source of calories in your diet.

Dealing With Pain

What you need to know about low back pain By Dr. Eric I. Francke

Low back pain is an epidemic in the United NeuroMuscular States with 5 percent of Therapy and people within a given year having an episode Integrated Massage!! of low back pain and RELAX, RENEW, RESTORE! 60-90 percent of people experiencing an episode of low back pain during their life time. The exact cause of low back pain can be difficult to clearly define and is often multifactorial. There is an increased incidence of low healcenteratlanta_4th.indd 1 2/16/11 10:21:32 A back pain and disc herniation in smokers. Obesity may also contribute to an increased incidence of low back Training the Body & Mind pain. These are two potential issues that patients who suffer from low back pain should address. The best strategy for addressing low back pain combines active intervention Adult Classes for with education and rehabilitation. The patient is an Women & Men active participant in the healing process. The treatments I commonly recommend for low back pain include activity as tolerated, non-narcotic medical management (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxants), and physical therapy. Physical therapy typically involves stretching, strengthening, and trunk stabilization exercises. The primary goal is for the patient to develop a low back home exercise program for the long-term. There are many modalities that physical therapy can try (traction, deep massage, TENs, ultrasound, etc.) which can be trialed on an individual basis. There is no evidence in the literature to support long-term use of braces for the treatment of low back pain. These measures will frequently resolve an acute episode of low back pain. If the patient continues to have low back pain after having undergone these measures, referral to an orthopaedic specialist for further evaluation and treatment is warranted.

my exercise Make This Year Your Healthiest! Tips on weight loss and fitness By Daryl Madison

Specialist in Spinal

Q: How should I start exercising if I have a lot of weight to lose?

Decompression

A: The most important thing to remember when you begin exercising, if you don’t currently exercise on a regular basis (regardless of your weight), is to take it slow. The people who attack exercise from the get-go are often the ones who are burnt out within a few days because they are overworking their bodies. By training in intervals, or using a program that’s divided into phases, your body gradually adjusts to the activity so it becomes an easier thing to integrate into daily life instead of feeling like a shock to the system.

and Disc Herniation

Q: Is there any exercise I can do with my child that will help both of us stay healthy and won’t be “boring” to them?

Dr. Sandra Bohorquez

A: You’re right; above all kids just want to have fun. If you label something “exercise” with them, chances are they’ll feel like they’re completing another chore. It seems like a no-brainer, but integrating a little more activity into the things you do daily can really help. Race them across the playground when you’re taking the dog for a walk, see who can count the greatest number of red cars when you’re walking from your parking space further away from the storemake it more about play than work.

Q: Is it safe for people with high blood pressure to begin an exercise routine?

roswellspine_4th.indd 1

2/16/11 11:35:33 A

A: You really should heed the warnings you always hear about consulting your physician before you begin a new exercise regimen. This is especially true if you have a cardiovascular concern whether it’s mildly high blood pressure or something more severe. After your doctor has given you the green light for regular physical activity, you can make the most of it by engaging in a thorough warm up and slow cool down before and after each session. If you do have a heart issue, this also helps minimize the strain placed on your heart and blood vessels, providing proper balance of rest and aerobic activity.

A: We all know there are types of foods (i.e. processed, fried, overly salted, etc.) that can spell certain death for your best health efforts. There are other, less visible things that could also mean trouble- hidden sugars can drastically increase the caloric value in foods deemed healthy by marketers. Fruit juice cocktails and yogurt are two such examples. A good trick is to analyze the nutrition label on the back of a product and ensure that the percentage daily value (%DV) isn’t excessive for ingredients like sodium, total fat, or sugars.

Breathing Life Into An Old Knee? It is amazing how many doctors are not aware or do not discuss the many available treatments for degenerated or arthritic joints. Simply put, the patient receives a prescription from one of many pain medications, then a corticosteroid injection and finally surgery. Next to Cardiovascular disease, Osteoarthritis is increasingly one of the most debilitating diseases out there today due to longer life expectancy, poor health habits, overweight, imbalance of joint function and overstrain. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the degeneration of the joint cartilage and bone which causes pain, swelling and limited mobility. This, in turn, negatively affects almost every aspect of life for a person suffering from this type of disease. When you think about it, we rely on our knees for just about everything, from climbing stairs and hopping into the bath tub to dancing the night away and chasing our kids around. Supartz treatment, commonly referred to as joint fluid therapy, employs a highly purified sodium hyaluronate which is very similar to synovial fluid. Synovial fluid surrounds your joints and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Research has shown that in some instances, increased synovial fluid in the joint may actually trigger healing by increasing the production of Chondrocytes, which are responsible for the production of cartilage!

SAY HELLO TO

PAIN FREE What We Help With: • Arthritic Joint Pain • Knee Pain • Degenerated Discs • Hip & S/I Joint Pain • Numbness & Radiating Pain • TMJ, Bursitis & Tendonitis

I fell 10 years ago and hurt my low back, my hip and my pelvis...I could not walk, drive, weight bare, sit, or barely stand. After just a few treatments, I noticed my body stabilizing... I could sleep better, walk better and continue to work...Total Health Care is the only place I will go ever again.” —Julie W.

What We Offer: • Regenerative & Integrated Medicine for Chronic Pain • Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists & Chiropractic Physicians On Staff • Regenerative Non-Steroidal Bio-Medicines (injections) • Anti-Arthritic Joint Injections Supartz® (for knees) www.supartz.com • Advanced Joint Fluid Replacement • Advanced Nerve Testing (Numbness & Tingling) • Lower Back & Neck Regenerative Disc Therapy • Non-Toxic Non-Surgical Pain Solutions That Work

Although several joint fluid therapies are available today, Supartz has a couple of things going for it that separate it from the pack: First, because Supartz has no synthetic component, the likelihood of an allergic reaction is extremely low. Further, Supartz has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid, the active ingredient that makes these types of treatments so effective. So, why have you not been told about this potentially wonderful treatment? This question is often posed and the answer is this: An orthopedic surgeon goes to school to learn surgery. Also in most cases, because of Insurance & Medicare requirements, that surgeon may not operate on a knee until he/she has attempted several non-invasive alternatives such as steroidal medications, corticosteroid injections and physical therapy. It is possible that the reason so many surgeons go through the basic steps outlined above and skip even attempting Supartz; is to qualify the patient for surgery. Keep in mind that in the United States, we do 11 times more knee surgeries than in Europe. Why? Because as one non-surgical European orthopedist said, “We in Europe focus on regeneration of the joint vs surgery.” Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover joint fluid therapy treatment. It was very rare that a real, Greg’s approach is simple: don’t sell what’s credible answer was provided. The more I learned just popular. Sell and promote products with about the real science of nutrition, the less I real science and that really work. In a world Starting EAS in early 1993—back then we spelled out the letters as “Experimental and Applied Sciences”—and introducing much of the world to creatine, we did something that no one had done: developing and introducing performance nutrition products that had university proof of working, of being better, and of delivering real world results. Pay for college without going broke! Free local workshops help parents save thousands! Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

www.bestselfconnect.com nancyg_4th.indd 1

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

Ask Natalie ”The Detox Diva”

Q: How can the National Colonic Center help me have a healthier heart? A: Your heart will benefit from our infrared sauna in many ways. Its state of the art technology helps you increase circulation and improve your heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate, which also helps reduce body fat. A 10-20 minute sauna session increases your heart rate by 50-75% providing the same metabolic result as a brisk walk and the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that “regular use of a sauna may impart a similar stress on the cardiovascular system, and its regular use may be as effective as a means of cardiovascular conditioning and burning of calories as regular exercise.” So while relaxing in our sauna is a great way to stay warm during these cold winter months, it can also make it easer for your heart to work more efficiently all year long!

my best self LaLona Hughes Richards

Mrs. Georgia-America 2010 talks about her full life When it comes to multi-tasking, LaLona Hughes Richards is a pro. From taking care of her family to being a literary consultant to teachers and administrators, she is tireless in her efforts to better the community and herself. LaLona speaks about her full life as a mother, fitness instructor, educator and so much more.

What inspired you to get involved with the Mrs. Georgia pageant? I believe there are two things that can drastically improve a person’s quality of life: education and fitness. I have a strong background in each of these areas and have long desired to use my experiences to make a more wide-spread impact on my community, state, and nation. However, I did not have the means or opportunities to do so. I knew that if I was crowned Mrs. Georgia-America, doors would open that would allow me to pursue these platforms in a much more dynamic and impactful way.

What were some of the responsibilities you had as Mrs. Georgia-America? Knowing that I would only have a short period of time to accomplish a lifetime’s worth of goals, I packed my calendar! I have spoken to the National Guard’s Youth Challenge Program, escorted athletes in the Georgia Special Olympics, read to the elderly, attended benefits, spoken to women’s groups, participated in parades and store grand openings, and tried to never say no when a need was identified. In addition to service opportunities, being Mrs. Georgia-America has been a catalyst for my career. I incorporated my personal charity, Frankie’s First, which brings on-reading-level books into the homes of students in need. I was trained for Mrs. Georgia-America by IQ Fitness, where I was later hired as a trainer. I have also enjoyed modeling opportunities from multiple companies including Mollye Jewlery, Jana Kos Clothing and Vibrance: A Hair Studio.

How long have you been a personal trainer and what made you want to become one? Overweight and determined to change it, I dedicated myself to physical fitness at the age of 11. It was then that I began heavily researching nutrition, muscular training, and cardiovascular conditioning. Although not a formal trainer until two years ago, I have been designing nutrition and exercise plans for friends, family, and myself for over twenty years. Reaching my optimal level of physical fitness has changed my life; I want to provide every person in the Atlanta area the opportunity to know what that feels like! www.bestselfconnect.com

What do you see as the keys to being your “best self?” I am inspired to be my personal best at all times, knowing that I am a constant role model – whether it be positive or negative – to my young boys. I am inspired to teach them lessons of service, compassion, healthy ambition, and self-discipline with each decision I make.

How do you juggle being a personal trainer, model, wife and mother? I have a very calculated schedule! I work as a personal trainer each morning from 5-8 a.m. Three to four times a month, I spend the day conducting professional development workshops on components of literacy and differentiation for teachers and administrators. On days that I am not doing that, I schedule any necessary meetings; one of those includes teaching (my son) Brendan’s preschool class once a month. (My husband) Dan and I plan date nights as often as possible. Despite the busy lifestyle, we pray as a family every morning and every night, and Dan and I make an effort each night to discuss that day’s highs and lows. We also reserve Sundays exclusively for church and family, and try to always plan a Saturday family activity. It works because I plan for it; I don’t think it would work any other way. my best self What do you consider some of your most memorable accomplishments? The day I received a letter stating that Frankie’s First had been incorporated was a day I will never forget. I have received a tremendous outpouring of support from the community with book drives, and I am eager to increase my volunteer base and get more and more books into the homes of students in need. More than anything, I hope that I have accomplished a sense of pride and work ethic within my family. Although my boys might be too young to understand it now, I hope my pictures, journals, media clips, etc. will tell them a story of their mom’s dedication to making a positive impact.

Tell us about Frankie’s First and how the idea came about. During the first week of my first year teaching, (a student) Frankie Ann asked me to walk her home from school. She took me into her tiny bedroom, and next to her bed was a huge stack of Scholastic book order forms. I asked her why she had saved them, and she responded that her grandmother could not afford to buy her books but she wanted to learn to read. I taught Frankie Ann for two years and was constantly inspired by her desire to learn despite all the obstacles she faced. It was due to Frankie Ann and the other amazing students in that first-ever class of mine that I decided to devote my adult life to providing high-quality education to students in low-income circumstances.

What inspires you in your daily life? My faith and my family inspire me. I start my days at 4:30 a.m. and end them around 11 p.m.; however, despite how incredibly busy I may be there is one agenda item that I can never afford to postpone or cancel: my daily prayer and scripture study. I know every good thing comes from our Heavenly Father, and I want to honor Him in all that I do.

What makes Parc Communities so different from other retirement living options? It’s Parc’s people! While Parc Communities is certainly proud of its beautiful communities, fully-appointed apartment homes and fine dining, it is the people that distinguish Parc from other communities.

What are the benefits of living at Parc Communities? U Friends and neighbors U Stimulating intellectual pursuits U Exciting social activities U Improved wellness, less worry U Beautiful surroundings U Fantastic food U More independence U Higher quality of life U Comfort and security U Laughter and fun

How can I get more information on the benefits of independent senior living?

Prioritize. If you put the right things first, the other things will fall into place. It is only when I have lost sight of this that things have gone awry. I prioritize time for my responsibilities at church (I teach an adult Sunday school class) and for my family first. I then divide what is left among the other opportunities and responsibilities that await me. Contact a Parc community Sometimes that means I cannot do it all, and that What is okay.
