Meet Our Team of Aesthetic Dentists
Join Best Self Atlanta This Fall and Give Back! We are proud to sponsor these important give-back initiatives. 10th Annual Blue Ties Luncheon This event on Sept. 7 benefits ProstAware, an important Georgia organization focused on educating men and their loved ones about prostate cancer. She has been featured on The Doctors, Extreme Makeover, The Wall Street Journal, and various media outlets.
Little Hands ... big LOVEFEST! Presented by Children Helping Children, this free philanthropic family festival on Oct. 21 brings together youth from the Atlanta area to assemble service projects. There is no better gift we can give our children than teaching them kindness and to be of service to others. To make this free fest possible for all to enjoy, join us on Sept. 8 for Cocktails in the Clouds. One-hundred percent of your $150 ticket makes LOVEFEST! 2018 possible. CocktailsInTheClouds.com Betting on a Cure This casino night fundraiser on Oct. 27 at the Capital City Club in Brookhaven benefits The Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation. The foundation provides support to lower income breast cancer patients by removing financial barriers along the way—from the beginning to the successful completion of their treatment. from the editor The Modern Man
• NO SURGERY OR NEEDLES
Pampering isn’t just for the ladies anymore. Today, it’s not uncommon for a handsome man to have snagged the last waxing appointment for the day at your go-to salon. More men are making grooming a priority and I believe I speak for the majority of women when I say, “We approve!”

From the smartly styled haircut to careful facial enhancements, “Man, You’re Looking Good!” gives you a peek inside the world of aesthetics from this growing phenomenon. A large part of looking good on the outside is feeling good on the inside, which isn’t always easy. From tackling Mount Everest to using each minute to prioritize their fitness goals, five Atlanta men share how they maintain active and healthy lifestyles. Take a page from their book (p.43) when it comes to balancing the responsibilities of career and family, not to mention, the temptation to skip workouts and abandon diets. Speaking of food, you’ll be ready to devour the nutritious recipes we share in “Lunches to Love.” If you’re in a lunch rut, these creative dishes will add some much-needed flavor and variety to your midday meal. We didn’t forget about the kids either! They won’t even realize they are eating vegetables as they dig into the brightly colored beet hummus or take a produce-packed turkey and 10:25 AM cheese wrap to school with them. We conclude this issue with a My Best Self Q&A with Sean Palani. This foodie founded an inclusive men’s dining group that explores Atlanta’s culinary scene while giving back to local organizations. If you’re in need of inspiration on how you can make a difference in the community, be sure to explore our Best Cause and Give-Back Guide sections in every issue. Happy reading,

Joint Replacement 101
Doctors share what you need to know and can expect from this surgical procedure.
A
s we age, the cartilage that covers the bones begins to wear down from everyday use. Once the cartilage is gone, the bones begin to grind together during activity, which can cause pain and discomfort along with permanent damage. Individuals might even start to notice this pain during sedentary activities. This is often the point when people begin to research the process to repair the damaged joint(s). If pain management methods such as medications, injections or physical therapy fail, a patient then becomes a candidate for joint replacement surgery. While there are many ways to hinder cartilage deterioration, once it is gone, oftentimes, the only fix is surgery. Standard joint replacement on patients of varying ages involves the doctor removing the damaged components of the joint. Bone and cartilage are then replaced with artificial materials such as metal or plastic, which have a life span of 20 to 25 years. “The best way to protect your new replacement is to keep muscles strong and avoid high-impact activities. Chronic Shoulder Pain? Tendonitis? Sprain/Strain? Solution: Bio-Regenerative Injection Therapy Because the shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body, it must balance strength, flexibility and stability. This balance can be maintained through exercises aimed at stretching and strengthening the supporting structures to avoid pain and injuries during specific activities. Problems are generally due to overuse, which weakens and destabilizes the rotator cuff. About 20% of sports injuries involve the shoulder. So what to do? Enter Bio-Sclerotic Proliferation Injection Therapy! The treatment causes the proliferation (growth, formation) of new ligament tissue in the areas where it has become weak. A biological (not toxic, non steroidal) solution is used, which is injected in the suspect area. This causes a localized inflammation in these weak areas which then increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients and stimulates the tissue to repair itself including increased cytokine production, which are the building blocks for cartilage and other connective tissue.

Curry Chicken Salad “Chicken salad is one of the best lunch options for those looking to keep carbohydrates low while enjoying a satisfying and delicious meal,” says McCarthy. “This chicken salad is full of healthy curry spices, including turmeric, which gives it a fabulous yellow color, and apple for added fiber. Be sure to find a curry spice blend that suits your palate, as some tend to be sweeter and others are spicier.”
Serves: 4 • ½ cup plain, whole milk Greek yogurt • 2 tablespoons avocado mayonnaise • 2 teaspoons curry powder • 1 teaspoon local honey • 2 broiled or grilled chicken breasts, diced • 2 stalks celery, diced • 1 apple, diced • ¼ teaspoon sea salt • Freshly cracked black pepper to taste In small bowl, stir together yogurt, mayonnaise, curry powder and honey until blended. In large bowl, combine diced chicken, apples and celery. Mix in curry yogurt dressing and season with salt and pepper. Serve on flatbread or wrapped in bibb lettuce.
Kale and Asparagus Farro Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette “If you are looking for an alternative to white rice or other refined grains to incorporate into your meals, then the ancient grain called farro is your new friend! It’s an excellent source of protein, fiber, magnesium, zinc and even B vitamins,” notes McCarthy. “You can pair this farro salad with a plain protein like chicken or salmon but it can certainly stand on its own for a delightful lunch.” Serves: 4-6 For lemon vinaigrette: • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt • Freshly cracked black pepper to taste
Bring 3 cups water and 1 cup farro to a boil and cook until tender (about 25 minutes). Drain farro and transfer to large mixing bowl. In separate mixing bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. Drizzle vinaigrette over farro and toss. Spritz small amount of olive oil in a sauté pan on medium-high heat. Toss in chopped asparagus and cook for about 2 minutes or until bright green. Add kale and cook for additional 2 minutes. Add asparagus and kale mixture to farro. Toss farro with feta cheese and fresh thyme and serve.
Turkey Cheese Wrap with Cucumber and Avocado For the kiddos, McCarthy offers this easy turkey and cheese wrap as a simple way to sneak in veggies. “Sliced cucumbers, avocado or other produce favorites add a delicious upgrade to wraps for a quick and healthy packable lunch,” she says. Serves: 1 • Tortilla wrap • Sliced turkey • Sliced colby jack cheese • Sliced cucumber • Sliced avocado • Mayonnaise, hummus or mustard if desired Slice, layer and roll ingredients. Wrap the wrap in parchment paper to secure. Enjoy!

Garden Eggplant Ratatouille “Garden Eggplant Ratatouille is quite a versatile dish—as you can pair it with rice or noodles or serve over a bed of fresh spinach to keep those carbs lower,” McCarthy advises. “The key to good ratatouille is to make sure the eggplant is cooked well and that the dish is seasoned with a bit of red chili flakes and a splash of aged balsamic vinegar to bring out its richness.”

Do You Have Xerostomia? By Jill M. Golsen, DMD
If your tongue and cheeks have ever felt like they are stuck to your teeth or your mouth has felt like it is stuffed with cotton, then you know what I am talking about. What you are experiencing is called xerostomia, also known as dry mouth. Other signs include sores in the corner of the mouth, general plaque, dry nasal passages, bad breath, being thirsty, and trouble swallowing.
What Can Cause Dry Mouth? Medications: chances are, if you “We need our saliva to flow like a river through our teeth, over our are taking any medication, from antihistamines to antidepressants, cheeks and gums to lubricate the tissue, digest our food, and control the you can experience dry mouth. bacterial and fungal population.” — Jill M. Golsen, DMD Look at the label for side effects identify a medication they might be taking that could be the and see if dry mouth or xerostomia is listed. cause, we look for a disease that might be creeping up on them. Smoking: nicotine dries the tissue inside the mouth and dehydrates it. Don’t smoke or “dip.” Disease: Sjögren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, cancer treatments and more can cause dry mouth.
Why is Dry Mouth a Bad Thing? We need our saliva to flow like a river through our teeth, over our cheeks and gums to lubricate the tissue, digest our food, and control the bacterial and fungal population. When the flow is slowed, the first thing we encounter is an overgrowth of the bacteria that can cause everything to spiral downhill. Once the more than 200 types of bad bacteria take hold to the sticky plaque in your mouth, the bacteria go to town by eating enamel, poisoning your gum tissue, and causing decay and bleeding red gums. All of this leads to dental decay and periodontal disease if left alone. When we see a patient with dry mouth symptoms, they usually don’t recognize what has caused this problem. If we can’t
If it’s a medication, the patient needs to limit sugary drinks, simple carbs, and stick to water to hydrate their mouth while taking that medication. Sometimes another medication can be substituted—ask your doctor or pharmacist. There are some over-the-counter mouthwashes and lozenges available for rehydration for the chronic issues caused by a disease.
The Final Word If you are experiencing dry mouth (xerostomia), see a dentist and make sure your gums and teeth are not experiencing the bad effects of it! Decay and gum disease are expensive to treat and if you can catch this early, we can prevent bad things from happening.

SYMPTOMS Common symptoms of cervical myofascial pain are restricted range of motion in the neck, tenderness to palpation, muscle spasm (“hard knots,” sleep disturbance and occasional initial limb paresthesia (tingling and numbness). These symptoms usually resolve completely in most patients within four to six weeks from onset. However, some severe whiplash symptoms may take between six to twelve months to resolve. The following are common questions from patients with muscular neck pain.
What is the usual course of treatment for cervical myofascial pain? Pain relief and decreasing inflammation of the tissues involved is firstline treatment. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and analgesics are prescribed, occasionally along with muscle relaxants. These medications facilitate early mobilization and stretching as well as decrease sleep disturbance due to pain. Physical modalities such as therapeutic massage, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation can increase blood circulation, decrease pain, and facilitate exercise. Cervicothoracic stabilization therapy trains and coordinates muscles of the neck area, shoulder girdle and shoulder blade to limit pain, maximize function and prevent further injury.
The muscles behind the neck radiate out to the shoulder blades causing the shoulders and upper back to hurt after a neck strain.
Should I wear a soft collar to help with the pain? Initially, soft collars (orthotics) help to immobilize the neck minimally and reduce the workload of the postural muscles of the neck. However, these should be discontinued after 48 to 72 hours to prevent tightening of soft tissue (muscle, tendon, ligament) and weakening of the neck muscles.

Do I have to go to physical therapy for treatment or can I do this at home? Many patients are unaware of just how poor their posture is (e.g., sloped shoulders, neck leaning forward, etc.). Because this posture is often the initial cause of their neck pain, it is optimal for a trained, objective practitioner to evaluate each patient’s biomechanics to customize the most effective and appropriate stabilization program. Restoring normal range of motion and good posture is necessary to prevent repeated microtrauma to the neck structures from poor movement patterns. Once the patient has mastered the proper techniques and skills required for their stabilization program, transition to an independent home-based program should continue to help—especially if done daily. CONCLUSION Muscular neck pain is a common problem most of us will experience sometime in our lives, whether from acute accidents or chronic posture problems. But despite its cause, adequate and appropriate treatment with conservative measures can provide long-lasting results.

We also have a beautiful Pilates studio. We offer small group classes and one-on-one sessions. This is a favored department! We have four amazing teachers that have done extensive research and training to give our members the very best experience. We offer mat classes along with Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and MOTR® classes and one-on-one sessions.
What mind/body programs does WHAC offer? We offer Power Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Inversion/Handstand Class, Ashtanga Yoga, Beginner Yoga, Restorative classes, Yin Yoga and 15-minute guided meditation classes currently. One-on-one yoga sessions are also available for those who want to learn more. Many of the teachers that work here have been recognized by the yoga community. Jason Anderson, a public figure who has been featured in Yoga Journal and holds retreats all over the world, teaches three classes here a week. Lilian Denise Cox, one of our amazing restorative yoga teachers, has published articles pertaining to yoga and back health. Alyssa Owen, our Power Yoga teacher, was asked to teach in the famous and wellrespected, Dirty South Yoga Fest this year.
Look out for the Ladder Barrel apparatus coming soon! Also be on the lookout for trigger point therapy class and, starting in September, our advanced Reformer Class on Thursdays. We have many fun events for mind/body throughout the year. Our next event will be Oktober-Pilates-Fest on Oct. 12 at 5:30 p.m. Come join us! (Attendees must sign up online ahead of time. Space is limited!)
What benefits can be gained through mind/body fitness? A healthy body needs both strength and flexibility. Just as bones crave space, muscle craves contraction. Working Pilates and yoga into your weekly routine can give you strength and also allow your bones and joints to thrive. With strength and flexibility comes protection against the breakdown of cartilage and bones, increased blood flow, immunity, lung health, and more. Plus, the release of dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin, and serotonin in the brain, cause you to leave the experience happy and relaxed. This helps to reduce stress, which also benefits overall health and keeps disease down.
Susan Walker, Mind/Body Program Director Susan has worked in the fitness industry since 2006 and has certifications and continuing education in personal coaching, group exercise, cycling, strength training, water aerobics, Pilates, and yoga. She is certified with Yoga Alliance RYT-200 under Tim Miller of the Ashtanga Yoga Center and holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She was a teacher at Kennesaw State University in the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education for six years. Her coursework covered wellness and health, functional movement, yoga, and Pilates. Susan found yoga and Pilates around 11 years ago. She noticed what a profound feeling and sense of calm she received after class. Susan eventually went through yoga and Pilates training and went deeper into her yoga practice. After dealing with a chronic back injury, she went on a quest for answers on anatomy and how to not only do yoga safely, but to also make it accessible for everyone. During this time, she worked with some of the most knowledgeable teachers of our time and her back began to heal. This process changed her life. It also changed her approach to teaching. Susan believes that yoga is accessible to all of us and can be a healing modality if we use it in that capacity.

partners in health Man vs. Prostate By Scott D. Miller, MD
T
he prostate is a walnut-size organ that resides below a man’s bladder. Its sole function is to produce a portion of the fluid that is generated during ejaculation (along with the neighboring seminal vesicles and the testicles). The prostate has no other urinary or sexual functions, but it is surrounded by several delicate structures that do provide these functions. As such, when this “walnut” misbehaves, it can certainly make you a little “nutty.” The prostate enlarges over a man’s lifetime. As urine exits the bladder, it passes through the prostate. Prostate enlargement can restrict urine flow and cause a more frequent desire to urinate. These symptoms can be particularly bothersome at night, interrupting an otherwise good night’s sleep. A prostate infection can also cause the prostate to swell and lead to similar symptoms. However, with an infection, the symptoms are often more severe and can be associated with pain during urination. The prostate can also wreak havoc with no warning at all. In fact, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. Unfortunately, once prostate cancer becomes symptomatic, it has most likely spread beyond the prostate. In addition, the earlier a man is diagnosed, the more likely he will preserve those urinary and sexual functions provided by the delicate structures surrounding the prostate. As such, starting at age 40, all men should learn about their best approach for screening and prevention based on their individual risks and health needs.
Men at particular risk for prostate cancer include those with the following: ¨ Family history of prostate cancer ¨ Unknown family history ¨ African-American race ¨ Prior history of an abnormal prostatespecific antigen (PSA) blood test
Many urologists recommend a baseline
Most men with prostate cancer are diagnosed because of an abnormal PSA blood test, the most common method for prostate cancer screening. However, an abnormal blood test does not mean that you have prostate cancer. Other causes of an elevated PSA include: ¨ Prostate enlargement ¨ Urinary tract infection ¨ Age
September is National Prostate Cancer
Recent advancements have allowed doctors to utilize the PSA test in new ways to reduce the number of men who require prostate biopsies or prostate cancer treatment. Examples include: ¨ Blood tests, which are more advanced than PSA tests ¨ Observing trends in PSA values over time ¨ Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the prostate ¨ Molecular (genomic) testing of prostate tissue samples
PSA test at age 40 in order to use for future comparison. When caught early, the cure rate for prostate cancer is 98 percent. When caught late, as many as 30 percent will succumb to this disease. partners in health What Baby Boomers Need to Know About Hepatitis C By H. Sooki Hon, MD, PhD
If
you remember listening to music on your transistor radio, then this message is for you.
The Hepatitis C (Hep C) virus is a serious health concern for the baby boomer generation, but it isn’t talked about often. People born between 1945 and 1965 are five times more likely than any other age group to have Hepatitis C. And now, approximately 1 in 30 baby boomers have it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), many were infected during a time when infection control standards were not what they are today. As a result, 3 out of 4 people with Hep C are part of the baby boomer generation— and millions don’t even know they’re infected. People can live with Hep C for years (even decades), feel healthy, and show no symptoms. Plus, it’s not tested for in routine blood work. This makes getting screened for the virus critical. The CDC recommends all baby boomers get tested. With a simple, one-time blood test, people can know for sure whether they are infected and need to seek treatment. Hep C is a contagious virus spread primarily through contact with the blood
of an infected person. It causes liver inflammation and can range from a short-term illness to a chronic infection attacking the liver.
People with Hepatitis C: ¨ Often have no symptoms ¨ Can live with the infection for decades without feeling sick ¨ Can be successfully treated with medications
Approximately 75% to 85% of people who become infected with the virus develop a serious, lifelong illness. If left untreated, this infection can cause severe
liver damage, including cirrhosis and liver cancer—even liver failure. Hep C is one of the leading causes of liver cancer, and the CDC reports that more deaths occur from Hep C each year than from HIV or any other infectious disease. For those who test positive, there is good news. We are living in a new era of treatment for Hep C. There are a variety of options, including new medications that can eradicate the virus in almost all patients. The physicians at Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates can help patients navigate the latest treatments and strategies. Talk to your doctor and request getting tested for Hep C.

Calm and Comfortable Open MRI Units Decrease Claustrophobia By Alpesh D. Patel, MD
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses magnetic energy to derive images of the body for diagnostic purposes. For many issue indications, this is the ultimate form of imaging of the body. MRI applications are vast but the modality is most commonly used for imaging of the brain, head and neck, spine, and the extremities. It is also excellent for imaging of the abdomen and heart. Magnets Make a Difference Many factors go into producing highquality images and the magnetic field strength of the MRI magnet is one of the most important factors. The quality of the images produced by MRI is directly proportional to the strength of the magnet. Up to a point, the higher the magnetic field strength, the better the quality of the image, and therefore, the better its diagnostic capability. One of the most common limitations of MRI for the general population has been claustrophobia. Most high-field-strength MRI units are enclosed, which makes many patients feel claustrophobic and makes the unit untenable for certain patients. Also, since most exams take 30 to 40 minutes to complete, the size of the population that was unable to tolerate MRI and not benefit from its outstanding diagnostic capabilities was considerable. Open MRI units were developed specifically for this large population. However, in the past, these units typically had very low-field-strength. As a result, image quality suffered considerably. Because of the suboptimal diagnostic
These high-field open units are very well tolerated by most claustrophobic patients and can be used even for patients without claustrophobia, as the image quality is excellent. quality of the images, use of these units fell out of favor. Unfortunately, some of these low- field MRI units are still around.
patients and can be used even for patients without claustrophobia, as the image quality is excellent.
Cutting out Claustrophobia for Good
Because of the expense of these units, there are very few of them available. It is imperative for patients who can’t tolerate high-field closed MRI
Recently, technological advancements have led to the development of highfield open MRI units. These newer units combine a wide, open design to mitigate claustrophobia and simultaneously maintain high-field-strength (and thus maintain the high diagnostic quality of the images). These high-field open units are very well tolerated by most claustrophobic
units to make sure that they are imaged in a high-field open MRI unit. When scheduling a MRI, it is important to question the imaging facility in order to be certain that the open unit they will have their imaging in is a high-field open unit.

Ways Your Life Will Improve After Getting Your Legs Done!
By David Martin, RN
M
any people seek treatment for varicose veins because they’re self-conscious about the bulges and discoloration that varicose veins cause. Once their damaged veins are closed and/or removed, they notice a number of improvements in the way they look and feel.
You’ll Feel Better When you have your vein disease treated, the heaviness, fatigue, discomfort, swelling and pain that are often associated with varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency will be relieved. Furthermore, the legs are less tired at the end of the day. Simply put, they feel better. When you feel better, you want to do more, so our patients generally work out more and enjoy activities that they were held back from prior to treatment.
Your Circulation Will Improve Varicose veins are often caused by damaged or weakened valves inside the veins that prevent blood from flowing upward as it should. Therefore, once the impacted veins are removed through one of our minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins, your circulation, which is an important part of your overall health, will improve. The blood flow that was moving incorrectly in the major vein, called the greater saphenous vein, will be rerouted to healthier veins in your legs that are working properly.
You’ll Have a Reduced Risk of Serious Venous Issues When damaged veins are closed and/or removed, you’ll have less chance of developing blood clots that can be serious and potentially fatal if they are in your deep veins. Before doing any vein treatment, we use the latest in ultrasound technology to diagnose underlying vein problems. That means that we’ll be able to pinpoint the exact nature of your vein disease before it gets worse. When vein disease is left untreated, you may develop more varicose and spider veins, swelling in your legs and ankles, skin changes in appearance and texture, and even skin breakdown and ulceration due to the high venous pressure.
No More Compression Stockings If you’ve been managing your varicose veins by wearing compression stockings, you’ll no longer have to do that. Many primary care doctors may recommend wearing compression garments when any symptoms of vein disease may be present but
When you have your vein disease treated, the heaviness, fatigue, discomfort, swelling and pain that are often associated with varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency will be relieved. this is simply conservative therapy and will not cure vein disease. The compression will help the blood flow while the stockings/ socks are on your legs, but when removed, the same problem will persist. However, vein disease treatment has improved dramatically in the last 15 years and now the medical standard is an ablation of the greater saphenous vein to correct the problem.
You Can Dress Appropriately for Our Hot Atlanta Summers After vein treatment, you’ll no longer have the unsightly varicose veins, bulging and swelling in your legs and ankles that can keep you in long pants when you’re on the golf course, at the beach or going on a walk.

Menopause, Mother Nature’s Great Compromise By Grattan Woodson, MD, FACP
It
is important to distinguish between natural aging, which is unavoidable, and hormone deficiency due to menopause, which is a compromise natural selection made with humankind to ensure its survival. Aging is simply due to copy errors that accumulate in the DNA during cell replication. This is the cause of the aging process and occurs in all of us. It is what places a cap on our longevity at about 105 years.
Photo courtesy of The Daily Mail.
Gina, pictured here with her baby, Jaya, is the first ape found to have undergone a menopause. This biological process was originally thought to be exclusive to humans. This suggests humans are not as dissimilar from orangutans as first thought. Menopause developed for an entirely different reason that has nothing to do with longevity or aging. Menopause is much more fundamental because it was needed for the very survival of our species. Menopause as we know it has been with us for millions of years and all of our nonhuman primate buddies go through it too. This includes gorillas, baboons, and chimps. So how did all of us end up with this really lousy deal? Why is it that women have to suffer the hormone deficiency that accompanies ovarian failure at an average age of 50 when she has another 30 years of life expectancy remaining? Studies show that the loss of these hormones promote numerous chronic diseases including heart disease, dementia, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer to name a few of the major concerns. Why would Mother Nature do that to her innocent children? It makes no sense. These are the questions I struggled with for years until I finally realized that our Mother had to make a terrible choice, one that had short-term benefits but longterm consequences. These consequences are
the medical problems mentioned above but they would not manifest until her children lived long enough to experience them. That time is now and today we are confronted with the consequences of the “Great Compromise.” The question is what is the best and safest way to manage the impact of hormone deficiency on postmenopausal women with what we know?
Gina, pictured here with her baby, Jaya, is the first ape found to have undergone a menopause. This biological process was originally thought to be exclusive to humans. This suggests humans are not as dissimilar from orangutans as first thought. Menopause is something that occurs with age but I argue is not a consequence of aging. Rather it is an intelligent compromise that nature recognized as a survival necessity for our ancient ancestors. Specifically, can you imagine what would happen if women in their 50s and beyond routinely had children? My goodness, the medical and social complications would be enormous. Our situation today is the same as it was then. It would obviously be a calamity if women did not lose their fertility at midlife. Every woman would have her tubes tied. While we do not wish to reverse the loss of fertility due to menopause, we absolutely do want to remedy the mandatory state of
hormone deficiency produced by gonadal failure. Today, we can safely restore a healthy and balanced hormonal environment for postmenopausal women that does not restore fertility or require the return of the menstrual cycle. Who could ask for more? The advantage of nature’s compromise is honored but without women having to pay the terrible price. At Women’s Optimal Health and Wellness we offer a suite of services including bioidentical hormones to restore and conserve the health, fitness, and beauty of women around menopause. ne evening out with the boys changed Chris Hadermann’s life in 1996. Tired of the Buckhead party scene, the recent Florida State University grad and friends decided to create East Andrews Café, an upscale yet unpretentious hangout for fellow 20-somethings. With a bachelor’s in finance and marketing, Hadermann possessed book smarts, passion, and a natural ability to recognize a glaring gap in Atlanta’s social landscape. “East Andrews Café was such an incredibly fun and rewarding springboard for me,” he says. “But I eventually realized I was more passionate about creating fun concepts centered around food, wine and conversations than the bar and nightclub industry.”

Next up? Hadermann co-founded the popular Southwestern chain Tin Lizzy’s Cantina. He then joined forces with Mike Evertsen and John “JP” Piemonte to launch Southern Proper Hospitality Group, an award-winning restaurant firm. Well-known brands such as The Big Ketch Saltwater Grill, Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails, The Blind Pig Parlour Bar, The Southern Gentleman Gastropub, Chido + Padre’s, and Gypsy Kitchen took the city by storm. If you have ever been to the SpanishMoroccan tapas restaurant Gypsy Kitchen, you know it’s hard to miss the iconic metal bull at the bar. Much like the bull, Hadermann, 46, is determined

Not only is Hadermann intentional about his professional moves but he’s also deliberate about his fitness and health. “I get up in the morning to get some fitness activity in. I have a routine that I at least try to go to Flywheel twice a week, do yoga at Thunderbolt Power Yoga once a week, and lift twice a week at The Forum Athletic Club, and that’s like the bare minimum just to keep me sane,” Hadermann says. His latest fitness goal? Mastering the art of meditation. “Many successful people meditate and it’s just really good for you, spiritually and metaphysically. So I’m trying

When it comes to nutrition, Hadermann admits that when he’s sampling cuisine for new eatery concepts in New York, California, or most recently, in Mexico, calories don’t count. Not all of these excursions are filled with decadent meals though. As a matter of fact, a healthy restaurant is up next on his launch list! All of Southern Proper Hospitality Group’s restaurants are designed to be “experiential,” so it’s natural that much of the inspiration for new concepts and existing ones come from Hadermann’s own worldly experiences. “Travel has become my favorite hobby. His meals consist of lean meats or fish and he will often chow down on salads and other nutrient-packed roughage. “Also, once a quarter, I do a bone broth cleanse where all I eat is bone broth for four days,” Hadermann says. “The collagen in the bone is really good for your stomach and your gut bacteria. Plus, it is a calorie restriction and helps me reset my system.” Outside of traveling, day-to-day duties, and practicing mindfulness, you can find the laid-back businessman exploring the cuisine along Buford Highway or venturing to Edgewood to check out its quirky bar scene. This year’s tournament will take place on Oct. 1 with 100 percent of the proceeds supporting the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Giving back is huge for Hadermann. His advice for budding entrepreneurs? “The hardest part is finding the thing that you’re going to do,” he says. “Once you hone in on what you are passionate about, then you must find the courage to take that first step and just do it. More often than not when people finally do step out and get started they often look back and say they wish they would have done it earlier.” SPHospitality.com

Unstoppable Outdoorsman Life for John Sloan has always been one big adventure. Beginning with a whitewater rafting trip at age 11 to breaking two toes while surfing on his wedding day, the excitement hasn’t stopped. The 32-year-old thrill-seeker is right at home sending people out on new adventures as co-owner of Atlanta-based outdoor gear and travel stores, High Country Outfitters. Since his workweek extends beyond the traditional Monday through Friday, Sloan has to juggle administrative work, exercise, and unwinding on a daily basis. “Since I don’t have the chance to recoup on Saturdays and Sundays (often busy days at the shop), every minute counts during the week,” he says. His favorite way to combine fitness and fun? Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) along the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. “It gives you a lowimpact workout that leaves you feeling great the next day,” says Sloan. “I was a little overweight seven years ago. While Sloan mixes up his fitness routine with plenty of activities (running, mountain biking, climbing), he admits that he sometimes falls into a fitness slump. His most effective catalyst for getting back into the swing of things—having a race to look forward to like the 100-mile Six Gap Century cycling ride through the North Georgia mountains he’ll tackle in September. Plus, encouragement from his wife, Caroline, always helps. “If I’ve had an exhausting week, she will set up a run with a friend or pack the car with climbing gear and say, ‘Let’s go. We’re having fun today!’”

As a kid, Jermaine Middleton would come home after school and make a beeline past the TV to play in the dirt or rain. “I’m one of those weird people that just enjoys being physically active,” says Middleton. His usual exercise routine consists of two to three runs and two to three bike rides a week. At 30, he’s been through Marine Officer Candidates School, raced motorcycles semiprofessionally, completed multiple half-Ironman triathlons, and is gearing up to become the first American-born black man to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 2019. Then it’s off to graduate school.

Everest Trailblazer
Climbing Mount Everest has been a dream of his since childhood, when he’d spend hours watching the Discovery Channel and TLC. When it comes to making his dream a reality, Middleton is prepared to take his training to new heights. Before the death-defying feat, he’ll make practice climbs on mountains such as Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Aconcagua in Argentina. He also plans to complete a full Ironman triathlon and two marathons. The event itself, Middleton is fond of saying, is the easy part. It’s the training leading up to the event that becomes increasingly more rigorous and, ultimately, unsustainable. “I’ll typically train between four and six days a week,” he says. Most days, that’s a swim, followed by a run or a ride. The weekends are reserved for long training days with 3-mile swims, trail runs, and 100-mile bike rides. An added motivator? One-hundred percent of the proceeds (minus expedition costs) for Jermaine’s climb will be donated to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Atlanta Dream Center, and the Four Corners Group, Inc. For the everyday person, the businessman offers this advice for finding more time to stay in shape. “Get an understanding of how you spend your time and look for areas where you can squeeze in a workout. Instead of sitting in rush hour traffic for hours, find a park or trail close to where you work. You can work out and then head home when there’s less traffic.” To follow Middleton’s journey, visit Summit413.com. bestselfatlanta.com

Health Food Ambassador Fitness has always been a part of Roi Shlomo’s life—from playing soccer and basketball as a youngster to hitting the gym in his teens to working with a personal trainer as the successful entrepreneur he is today. “Thanks to my workouts, I’m more focused, I’m more clear, and it just mentally keeps me in shape,” says the 40-year-old founder of superfood café franchise Kale Me Crazy. He admits there is sometimes the temptation to cancel a workout when life gets too hectic, “but once you stop, it’s so hard to get back into the rhythm.” The memory of how invigorated he feels post workout is often motivation enough. In 2012, he saw the documentary “Food, Inc.,” which takes a deep dive into corporate farming in the United States. “I found out that a lot of the food I was eating that I thought was healthy wasn’t really healthy,” he says.

I found out that a lot of the food I was eating that I thought was healthy wasn’t really healthy,”
He ditched the processed foods and began juicing, making smoothies, and cooking at home. “I was amazed at how much better I felt after incorporating real food choices into my daily diet,” he recalls. Little did he know that the lifestyle change would result in a new career opportunity. “It was difficult to find casual places to eat out that offered healthy options. What became clear, almost immediately, was that a lot of people want to eat healthy foods but don’t know where to start and where to go,” Shlomo says. He set out to change that with the creation of Kale Me Crazy. Today, the eatery has 17 locations around the country that reflect Shlomo’s own plant-based eating philosophy.

Michael Patria, executive chef at Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta, has struggled with weight the majority of his life. But with a family history of diabetes and heart disease looming and his own tests revealing high cholesterol, hypertension and hyperglycemia, he knew it was time to make a serious change. In early 2018, the culinary mastermind embarked on a journey to lose 60 pounds. “It was my resolution for the New Year,” he says. “I realized that it was time to start leading a healthier life so that the same health issues that have affected my family would not impact me.” He started by cutting back on fried and high-sugar foods and limiting his intake of bread and red meat. Now, the 39-year-old fills his plate with fresh vegetables and lean proteins.
“
I realized that it was time to start leading a healthier life so that the same health issues that have affected my family would not impact me.”
“Portion control is a big one for me,” Patria concedes. “When I first started the diet, one of the things I did was use a couple of different meal plans so I could see what their portions were like. I realized that even when I was eating healthy foods, I was eating too much.” Photography by (right) Brian Reeves, Perfect Day Photos; (middle) M-Squared Public Relations.

Pound-Shedding Chef
Not eating after 9 p.m. helped, as did choosing more fiber-rich foods, like oatmeal, for breakfast, and adding grains such as quinoa, farro, and freekeh to salads and vegetable dishes to make them more filling. Adding to the challenge, however, is Patria’s profession. “It’s difficult because you have so many bad foods available to you and my work schedule is very hectic,” he says. Luckily, he can always count on other chefs in the kitchen to prevent him from doing something he’ll regret later. Patria also incorporated a new fitness routine with the help of his personal trainer, Steve Roberts, at Life Time Athletic Sandy Springs. Roberts also conducted a metabolic test, which was crucial for Patria to understand how to most efficiently and effectively burn fat while building muscle. The culinarian has already dropped 35 pounds since February and is hoping to hit the 60-pound mark by the end of 2018. bestselfatlanta.com

Fitness-Focused Father Juggling the responsibilities of a husband, father, a and a demanding job means
Paul Cox often has to get creative when it comes to keeping active. “I’m trying to ride my bike to work more and run from my front door instead of driving to run on trails,” he says. He’s a big proponent of planning ahead and has found seemingly little things like setting exercise clothes out the night before and keeping a pair of sneakers in the car to be great incentives to get out and get moving. The metro Atlanta area offers a plethora of beautiful outdoor spaces, and Cox, 48, can often be seen climbing Stone Mountain, kayaking on the Chattahoochee River, mountain biking at Blankets Creek, and cycling through the Eastside of Atlanta and Decatur.
“
Cox’s kids have also been a huge source of motivation. “I’m really trying to get my kids active,” he says. “They don’t need to be endurance athletes or anything, but it’s important for them to challenge themselves and have some appreciation of the outdoors.” Ideally, Cox will get in his exercise at the beginning of the day by cycling 12 hilly miles to work and then get in a workout at his office gym. Sometimes, instead of hitting the gym in the morning, he’ll spend time kayaking after work. Both options leave his evenings open for time with family. He notes the importance of flexibility when it comes to making activity a priority. “I’m always the first one to wake up on the weekends—leaving to go paddle, bike or run before the rest of the family wakes up,” he says. “Anybody with kids knows that the best made plans can change at any time. So, you just have to be super flexible with your personal exercise or activity time and use your time wisely.”

As far as surgical procedures go, men can get a Signature Face Lift, which best, whatever your age! will help tighten up loose skin in their neck and jowls. We offer blepharoplasty to lift sagging eyelids and eliminate bags under the eye. There are also minimal invasive procedures such as SmartLipo which can remove unwanted fat in the abdomen.
Q Q
What are the best alternatives to surgery for men who are trying to lose a few inches? Atlanta Face & Body offers several fatreducing procedures that are painless, non-invasive, require no down time and are easier on the wallet. Ultherapy, typically used in the neck area, stimulates collagen production by delivering ultrasound energy to the skin and the layers beneath the skin. This jump starts the natural process of producing new collagen which lifts and tightens the skin. We also offer body-sculpting solutions like Vanquish and
SculpSure®. Both of these target stubborn areas and damage fat cells in order for the body to naturally process them away. Vanquish uses radiofrequency energy and SculpSure® is a laser-treatment, light-based technology. More recently, FDA-approved SculpSure® is becoming very popular for men to reduce their double chin.
Q
What about dermal fillers for men? What issues can these treat? Dermal fillers are very good at reducing wrinkles and lines for men, especially on the forehead and around the eyes. I believe in these areas that “less can be more.” We can reduce signs of aging but still retain a masculine look with a conservative approach to injections. In fact, one of our most recent patients, Stan Lewis, received treatments of Radiesse® and Belotero Balance® dermal fillers for a lower face makeover. The results were so outstanding, he has been selected as one of the 5 Faces of America Grand Prize winners.
Q
Finally, what can you offer men suffering from hair loss? Atlanta Face & Body offers Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Hair Therapy for thinning hair and hair loss. PRP can improve hair health and encourage the regrowth of hair using your body’s own growth factors. This treatment is best suited to focal areas of thinning hair. The best results occur with a series of injections typically spaced a month apart. PRP appears to stimulate hair growth by re-activating dormant follicles resulting in healthier thicker hair.

owadays, it seems as if women aren’t the only ones who have taken a dip in the fountain of youth. More men are taking a personal interest in grooming and fighting the effects of aging. It is a trend that is skyrocketing and there’s no better time than now to hop on board. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over one million men received minimally-invasive procedures (think laser hair removal, fillers, and chemical peels) in 2017. So, ladies, tell your man it’s more than okay to spend a little extra time in front of the mirror. And for the men who already do, you’re in good company.

Looking Good
Men’s Grooming and Aesthetics After making over Atlantans for nearly 40 years, it’s easy to see why Richie Arpino has made national headlines for his haute hairstyles. At Richie Arpino Salon in Buckhead, his clients, of which roughly 50 percent are men, turn to him to provide a hairdo that Richie Arpino complements their personality, profession and much more. Today, an increasing number of men are saying goodbye to big-box chops and hello to personalized cuts. When it comes to finding the perfect ’do for you, Arpino says, “Hairstyles are really determined by lifestyle, profession, and self-confidence.”
A full head of hair comes easier to some more so than others. For those who crave that look but can’t naturally achieve it, Ken Anderson, MD, FISHRS, of Anderson Center for Hair & Aesthetics is your man. Exclusively for over 15 years, he has helped men regain their youthful hairstyle. His practice specializes in the use of the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration system, providing a permanent solution for hair loss. “This isn’t your father’s hair transplant. In fact, with the advent of bio-enhanced hair restoration surgery in the last few years, it isn’t even your older brother’s hair transplant anymore,” he says. Today’s options include state-of-theart remedies like the use of a laser light cap, which stimulates cells to increase hair growth, and platelet-rich plasma injections, which work like fertilizer for the hair follicles. With plenty of methods to choose from, there’s no reason to be unhappy with a receding hairline.
Even though Arpino believes that every haircut should be personalized to the man receiving it, he does offer a couple of rules of thumb for men dealing with gray or thinning hair: Don’t dye it all one color. When men start to notice gray hairs, their first instinct is to usually dye their hair all one color. Instead, sweep through “streaks” of darker color versus all over darker color, which can age men even more. Do cut thinning hair shorter. While this seems counterintuitive, the closer cut makes thinning spots less prominent. The go-to trendy haircut for men these days is easy to spot. Long on the top and shorter on the sides with a trimmed beard, the “high and tight” has clearly taken over. From Atlanta United players to A-listers like Brad Pitt, this style is flattering on various ages and blends seamlessly from the boardroom to bachelor pad.

Beards and Body Hair The hair on your head isn’t the only thing you should consider when taking your look into account. A favorite on the red carpet, the runway, running trails and more, facial hair is hotter than ever. So much so that freelance journalist Christopher Oldstone-Moore recently penned “Of Beards and Men,” a book that dives into the history of beards— what many would call a symbol of masculinity. “The beard is a portal into selfimprovement. Use it as a way to invest in yourself. The attention you give to

Find The Best Beard For Your Face Shape For men who prefer to sport facial hair, rocking a beard all year will keep you right on trend according to Lauren Rachel, men’s grooming expert at Boardroom Salon for Men. Rachel suggests tailoring your look based on your face shape.
Triangular Face Your facial hair should minimize the narrowness of the chin but stay away from creating the look of a wider jawline. Start with growing a full beard just below your cheekbones, this will help balance the lower half of your face.
Round Face To balance out a round face, you need to make it look longer. To do this, you should grow out a full beard but be sure to keep it neat and trimmed. Try grooming your beard to the lines of your cheekbones and square off the neckline to create a more oval-looking face shape.
Rectangular/ Oblong Face Your best option is to keep your beard short and well groomed. You don’t want to take away from your already defined face shape.
Square Face Stick to a shorter beard with defined lines or go for a scruffier look—both will help you highlight your defined jaw. “Not everyone has a specific face type, you may even be a mix,” Rachel says. “Play around with your facial hair to see what type of beard works best for you. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist or barber for suggestions.”

Have facial hair covered? Are you the Bigfoot of your friends? The “Modern Man” has a solution for that as well— waxing. While the idea of waxing might seem intimidating, Bobbiegail Simpson, owner of Waxing the City in Alpharetta, says there’s nothing to fear. “This is nothing like ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ the more you wax, the sparser the hair becomes and the longer the results last.” Simpson has seen a large increase in the number of men getting waxed. If you’re tired of battling stubborn hair, start small with an eyebrow or chest wax. Simpson recommends first-timers use numbing cream and ibuprofen 30 minutes before their appointment. More adventurous guys can opt to go below the waistline with a Brazilian (100-percent hair free under the briefs), a choice that Simpson notes is growing among her male clientele.
Dubbed “The Queen of Faces,” she has performed over 4,000 face-lifts and has noticed the uptick in male patients. “There are more men seeking out injectables, noninvasive procedures, and facial plastic surgery than ever before,” she says. “The stigma of aesthetic procedures has lessened and men realize that looking their best can help them maintain a competitive edge,” she notes. On any typical day, you can find Dr. Whitaker applying her careful technique, which focuses on a natural look, to men requesting fillers such as Botox® and Kybella®. “Men’s faces are structured

your facial hair can parlay into your hair, skin, and overall style as well,” says Lauren Rachel, men’s grooming expert at Boardroom Salon for Men.
Nip/Tuck Men aren’t just dipping their toes into waxing and hair care, cosmetic procedures are increasingly on their radar. Elizabeth Whitaker, MD, FACS, founder of Atlanta Face & Body Center, would know.

—Elizabeth Whitaker, MD, FACS differently and placement of the filler reflects that, so that the enhancement preserves a masculine look. That is why seeking out an experienced injector is so important.” Brian Maloney, MD, founder of the Maloney Center for Plastic Surgery notes that men often come to him looking for a way to look less tired or angry. “As men age, their eyebrow muscles tend to weaken, causing them to look heavy and slant down. This slanting or looming brow often makes them look worn or bothered when they are otherwise fine. To correct this, an eyebrow lift or fillers usually do the trick,” he says. Dr. Maloney explains that while men still typically hide their cosmetic procedures (much like women) they have gained confidence over the years in asking for what they want upon their initial
consultation. “Men used to come in for a consultation under the guise of a different issue and then ask about fillers or injectables. Now, we are experiencing an influx of bookings from men who openly want to talk about their cosmetic concerns.”
While some men struggle with wrinkles, others struggle with body weight. Body contouring is becoming an increasingly popular method to try to tackle this issue. According to Monte Slater, MD, FACOG, ABAARM, Dream Body Sculpting is a treatment that uses multiple modalities including ultrasonic cavitation and radio frequency to permanently destroy fat cells, remove toxins, and tighten the skin. Always happy to assist his male clientele, the founder of Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging, recently helped a U.S. Airman. In need of a smaller waist measurement to meet his final physical assessment, the lean service member utilized body contouring to shave off six inches. Whether you’re ready for a makeover from head to toe or just want to update your look, these expert tips and treatments will get the job done.

Feeling Good
Men’s Health by the Numbers Take Action Taking care of your body from the inside out is sure to reflect in the mirror. Making health a priority is one of the easiest ways to maintain a youthful appearance and have lasting energy. Keeping weight in check is a fantastic first step. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2015-2016, 40 percent of American men between the ages of 40-59 were obese. The organization also notes that obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, are some of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States. Body mass index (BMI) is a commonly used estimate for body fat percentage and can be a helpful tool in regard to finding a healthy weight for your body. Men should aim to have a BMI between 18.5 to 24.9. G. Alan Binkley, MD, FACS, FAAOS, orthopedic surgeon at Northview Orthopaedic Associates, suggests that men engage in a minimum of 150 minutes of at least moderate aerobic exercise per week. And Chris Romano, owner of Atlanta Strength & Conditioning, notes the importance of maintaining a lifelong exercise routine saying, “Inactive men over the age of 30 lose three to five percent of their muscle mass per decade.” He adds that even with the natural aging process, it is still possible to gain strength and muscle. Matters of the heart are also crucial for men. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the U.S. When it comes to the disease, the most important thing Tara HrobowskiBlackman, MD, of Piedmont Heart Institute advises is knowing your numbers for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and weight, and limiting sweet treats, trans fats and saturated fats.

Numbers to Know High blood pressure usually has no warning signs and the risk for high blood pressure increases with age. According to recommendations by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, normal blood pressure readings for adult men should be less than 120/80. Men older than age 40 should have their blood pressure checked once a year. Decrease your risk of having a heart attack and stroke by annually measuring your “bad cholesterol” (LDL). According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, a healthy LDL cholesterol level for men over the age of 20 is below 100. Excluding skin cancers, the American Cancer Society (ACS) notes that colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men in the United States. The organization

recommends those with average risk begin regular screenings at age 45. The American Diabetes Association recommends adults 45 and older or those with high risk (at least a 33 percent chance of developing diabetes over the next 10 years) be screened for type 2 diabetes every 3 years. Starting at age 40, all men should learn about their best approach for prostate cancer screening and prevention based on their individual risks and health needs. Scott D. Miller, MD, of WellStar Medical Group, explains that many urologists recommend a baseline PSA test at age 40 in order to use for future comparison. Eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, and not smoking are 3 simple ways you can ward off erectile dysfunction says Dr. Miller. bestselfatlanta.com

Putting Bedroom Problems to Rest By Scott D. Miller, MD
It’s all about blood flow When it comes to our body working like a well-oiled machine, it’s all about blood flow. Nothing could be more true for erectile function. Since the vascular channels supplying this male part are more susceptible to damage than blood vessels elsewhere in the body, erectile dysfunction can be the first sign of a more serious problem to come. What could be better motivation to keep ourselves healthy?
Obesity makes you soft Of all the preventable causes of erectile dysfunction, obesity tops the list. Being overweight is associated with quite a few conditions that contribute to erectile dysfunction, including: • Cardiovascular disease • Decreased testosterone • Diabetes • High blood pressure

What Are Porcelain Veneers? Veneers are custom-designed, extremely thin shells resembling natural teeth that are carefully and artistically created by your dentist and fabricated in a dental lab. The veneers are then bonded over your own teeth and can serve several purposes, the most common including straightening, whitening and lengthening. The main goal of having veneers applied is to give you a beautiful smile! This procedure is the best technique we utilize today to provide our patients with the best smile possible! Even if veneers are out of reach financially for now, she works with every patient to help them create the best possible smile within their budget. Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging, says he added “Dream Body Sculpting Treatments” to the menu of services for his patients because, “This is the best noninvasive fat reduction/ skin-tightening system I have found. We have our own patient photos to prove it! This technique destroys fat, tightens skin, and reduces toxins.” So many of the current treatments on the market require multiple visits, are painful with less than promised results, and have a high price tag. We utilize ultrasonic cavitation (USC) coupled with radio frequency (RF), which destroys the fat cells and tightens skin while cleaning and detoxify the fat cells from the body—achieving beautiful and permanent results. Both men and women can get rid of unwanted fat and visibly tighten skin at the same time, with no downtime. Each session takes 90 minutes and three to four treatments are recommended for optimal results.
Nonsurgical body sculpting—the latest painless treatment for fat reduction and skin tightening with immediate results.

DR. ELIZABETH WHITAKER ATLANTA FACE & BODY CENTER ATLANTAFACEANDBODY.COM | 678.888.3223 Dr. Elizabeth Whitaker is a Master of Makeovers indeed, having transformed thousands of lives with her naturallooking Signature facial procedures. Dr. Elizabeth is the first female, Fellowship-Trained Double Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon to practice in Atlanta. She is among the most experienced facial plastic surgeons not only in Atlanta, but the country. Unsurprisingly, she’s been selected as one of America’s Top Plastic Surgeons (Castle Connolly, 2016).
BEFORE
AFTER
Dr. Elizabeth founded Atlanta Face & Body Center to offer the latest technology for nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures, as well as her surgical expertise. “Rather than waiting until you need a surgical procedure, you can maintain a youthful look with smaller procedures at every stage of life, which I believe is the new ‘aging gracefully,’” says Dr. Elizabeth. “That being said, one of the most rewarding procedures I perform is lifting of the face and neck. My Signature Lifts can be performed with gentle numbing and relaxation, avoiding general anesthesia, and emphasizing a natural, not overdone look.” She adds, “Enhancing appearance is just the beginning. Transforming how people feel about themselves and helping you find your Beautiful You is incredibly gratifying.”
My philosophy is that the best facial plastic surgery doesn’t draw attention to itself. ‘Everyone will notice, but no one will know’ is the ideal outcome, in my mind. BEFORE

It’s only natural to pine for the trimmer, pre-baby body of your youth. Unfortunately, as we age, it only becomes more difficult to rejuvenate our figures with diet and exercise alone. That’s why I offer my unique Mommy Makeover procedure. When we hear the term “breast augmentation,â€? we tend to think of bigger breasts with more cleavage. Due to aging, childbirth, weight fluctuations and genetics, your body and breast shape may not reflect how you feel or want to look. Implants not only enlarge naturally small breasts, they can restore volume and symmetry in breasts that have deteriorated from pregnancy and breastfeeding or a major weight loss. This will create a more balanced and proportional look. Now more than ever, we have more implant choices available to meet your aesthetic goals. Although the most popular remains the round silicone implant, an increasing number of patients choose an anatomically-shaped implant to create a more natural look with less cleavage. Implant style, shape and volume can all be adjusted to best fit your body.
Another option for breast augmentation is fat grafting. Fat grafting is rapidly increasing in popularity as a stand-alone option for breast augmentation or in conjunction with implants to enhance breast shape and size. While using your own fat may seem more desirable than an implant, the procedure is limited by the amount of body fat you have available for transfer to the breasts.
Now more than ever, we have more implant choices available to meet your aesthetic goals. BEFORE

DR. ELIZABETH WHITAKER ATLANTA FACE & BODY CENTER ATLANTAFACEANDBODY.COM | 678.888.3223 Permanently reducing up to 25% of stubborn fat in just 25 minutes: too good to be true? SculpSure®, the latest technological advancement in body contouring, makes it possible. “Almost everyone, even those who exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, can have localized areas of stubborn fat. To be able to reduce that area nonsurgically with a treatment that’s fast, safe, comfortable, effective, and with no downtime is a game-changer,” says Dr. Elizabeth Whitaker. “One of the focuses of my practice is offering the latest technology for nonsurgical and minimally-invasive procedures, as well as my Signature surgical procedures. Atlanta Face & Body was the first plastic surgery center to bring SculpSure to Atlanta.” As a light-based treatment, SculpSure preferentially heats the fat cells to the target temperature that destroys them. The fat loss is permanent. Over time, the body eliminates these cells with results evident in 6-12 weeks. Individual results may vary, but the satisfaction rate in studies is over 90%. SculpSure has been featured on The Doctors, Dr. Oz, and Real Housewives.
“Life is hectic, and finding downtime sometimes is the hardest thing for people to do,” says Dr. Elizabeth. “I have literally had patients go to the gym that afternoon or run a marathon the weekend after treatment! With the speed of the treatment (25 minutes), I can treat more of your problem areas in a shorter amount of time.” She also notes, “Like most technologies I choose for my practice, I a nd all of my staff have had the treatment, so we speak from personal experience, not just statistics. I look forward to introducing more Atlantans to this breakthrough new technology.”

Great Destinations in the Southeast to Rejuvenate, Relax and Have Fun! By Jennifer Colosimo
O
nce the temperatures dip, the allure of indoor fun intensifies, and a short drive from the city opens up countless opportunities to avoid cabin fever and keep the entire family loving life and each other while staying adequately entertained. Here’s your guide for where to go in the Southeast and what to do when you get there.
Start by checking off the state’s best museums with a stroll through the High Museum of Art, the Children’s Museum of Atlanta, and Fernbank Museum of Natural History. You’ll also want to tour the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville or experience the Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum in St. Marys. You often don’t have to go far to include these educational stops on your vacation itinerary.
Celebrate on the Lake PHOTOGRAPHY BY (SKIER) SAM DEAN.
In Georgia, the lake life doesn’t stop when the weather turns cooler. In fact, if you’ve got the right itinerary and a dose of holiday spirit, the entertainment actually ramps up. Lake Lanier (and its surrounding towns) includes numerous family-friendly farms with pumpkins, hayrides and u-pick crops along with petting zoos and craft tables and plenty of rentable cabins to cozy up in during seasonal festivals. Plus, the entire family can enjoy holiday highlights during Magical Nights of Lights at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. Find a bevy of fall fun around Lake Allatoona, with costume contests, parades, avid bird watching and more surrounding its 12,000 acres of lake. Nearby Barnsley Resort provides a season full of fun such as signature holiday dining, lights and wreath-making workshops in December, as well as horseback riding through the changing leaves, toasting s’mores over an open fire, enjoying football, lawn games and craft brews in the outdoor Beer Garden or joining in on a Saturday Artisan’s Workshop, featuring a different local artisan every weekend. 66

Just outside of Athens, Georgia in historic Greene County, Lake Oconee offers cozy campgrounds, golfing, nature walks, a renowned food and wine festival, a fall Rhythm & Brews concert and more. Christmas at The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee includes breakfast with Santa Claus, holiday lights on the lake and a life-sized gingerbread house. In North Georgia, revel in picturesque fall-hued vistas, don coats and grab hot chocolate mugs when strolling through the holiday lights festival at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee or indulge in the holiday buffets and craft shows at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa.
Often the holiday season inspires a sense of giving, and several resorts have answered the call for a growing voluntourism trend. Give Kids The World Village in Kissimmee, Fla. offers Disneyfaring families a way to give back during their trip, helping in a storybook resort created for sick children and their own families.
Cooler on the Coast Just because the swimsuits are packed away doesn’t mean the beach is out. In fact, much of the drivable coastline for Georgians offers plenty of cool-weather calendar choices. Alabama’s beaches serve up small-town charm with ample entertainment. From Orange Beach and Gulf Shores to Perdido Key, soak up a vivid arts scene, maritime history, and adventure parks. End any day at the famous Flora-Bama Lounge for cocktails and five stages of live music and fun.
Escape to the Mountains Snow or shine, valleys and peaks, day hikes or the Appalachian Trail, the mountains provide bucket-list-worthy stops to schedule any vacation around. Small-town vibes draw travelers to cities like Blairsville, Helen, and Hiawassee in Georgia, North Carolina’s Hayesville, Franklin and more. Apple picking runs into the early part of the fall in North Georgia, with stops like Mercier Orchards.

Teens Give Back in a Big Way
Make a difference while cleaning out your closet with the Smyrna-based online consignment boutique Josie’s Friends, LLC. When you consign everything from school uniforms and maternity clothes to women’s and juniors’ apparel, you help the business sponsor children. A portion of its profits go to Children International, a nonprofit that works to break the cycle of poverty and help youth stay healthy and focused on education. Any items that cannot be sold are donated to the Atlanta Mission and Atlanta Children’s Shelter.
Founded by former Buckhead schoolteacher, Michelle Hodgson, Children Helping Children (CHC) works to teach kids how to use their talents to give back. On Sept. 8, join the local nonprofit as it celebrates 10 years of giving back with its Cocktails in the Clouds event. The fundraiser will benefit the organization’s signature event, Little Hands ... big LOVEFEST!, a hands-on service project hosted by members of its Junior Board of Directors. On Oct. 21, families will have the opportunity to attend the free festival and participate in the activities created by the teenage board members to benefit their chosen charity partner. Visitors can pack CHC’s Be Well Bears with art therapy supplies for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta patients, decorate dog collars and leashes for Canine Assistants, and more.

my best self Sean Palani
Foodie philanthropist Sean Palani talks about his social club, the Atlanta Guy’s Dinner Group, and why you’ll want to show up with your boys. By Annie Paschal Laughter fills the air and enticing entrées are sprawled across the table. This is a typical Monday night for Sean Palani, founder of the Atlanta Guy’s Dinner Group. After the restaurateur moved to Atlanta in 2011 to open the Inman Park Barcelona Wine Bar and the city’s three bartaco locations, he began exploring the local culinary scene with his buddies. The popular outings turned into the Atlanta Guy’s Dinner Group, which hosts monthly get-togethers that invite men to dine at restaurants like Gypsy Kitchen and Crispina while supporting local charities such as the Midtown Assistance Center and BeLoved Atlanta.
What is the Atlanta Guy’s Dinner Group experience like? What can a newcomer expect? You can expect to be surrounded by a group of wonderful guys, all of whom have hearts as big as their appetites. We have men from all walks of life— lawyers, carpenters, nonprofit business owners and more. We arrive, socialize, make introductions and then eat. Before we pick up our forks, I like to make a toast to thank the guys for their generous efforts, as well as officially welcome any new members to the table. We order and eat communal-style, which is my favorite way to eat. It is usually sheer gluttony! It’s not uncommon to see the guys waving their napkins in surrender.
How do you select the charity the group will support?
Is there an experience with the group that is a sentimental favorite? My wonderful friend, Michelle Hodgson, founder of the nonprofit Children Helping Children, connected us with a young man who was organizing a food and shoe drive for the less fortunate. He came to the dinner group and shared the struggles his mother faced as a single parent. He felt compelled to give back because of the generosity he and his mother received when they were in need. I think we all had lumps in our throats. He is going to do great things.
How do you spread the word about the group and how can people find out how to join? I tell and invite everyone and I have the guys do the same. I had cards made and I hand them to everyone. Standing in line behind me at the grocery store? You’re getting a card! We also have a Facebook page and people can reach out to me directly at seanpalani@yahoo.com.
Who helps you be your “Best Self?” First and foremost, my family. My wife, Dina, and boys, Keoki and Frankie, are my everything. Also, Glen Jackson, my wife’s boss at Jackson Spalding. It’s the way he carries himself, treats and respects his employees, and his generosity to numerous causes in our city. The guys in the group push me, as well. They are amazing men who take the time out of their busy schedules to come join me on a monthly basis to eat and give back. These guys are the epitome of what I hope my boys will grow up to be. We like to select charities that are local and help those in our city. We are very partial to organizations that support children, women, families, and the displaced. The guys bring donations (food, clothing, checks, etc.) with them to the dinner and I give them to the recipient the next day, unless a representative from the charity we are supporting is at the dinner (I always invite them as my guest). We also make online donations.
