If you’re resolved to do something, definitely make it a point to read some of the interesting articles from our expert contributors. With the advice they’re giving, you could save thousands of dollars by things such as identifying a leak early, which Kevin O’Donnell explains in his article, or looking into some less expensive and efficient fireplaces options for the winter months in Scott Magness’ article! You could also learn some new beauty tips from Michele Quinn of Blush Salon or get an exciting party idea in Elyse Lovenworth’s article from Firepoint Grill. This month we are excited to have Marty and Colette Milligan join us for this edition; two long-time Newtown Square citizens who love their community. You might recognize Colette Milligan who has been a teacher in the school district for 20 years and Marty from Destination Delco! Colette teaches 2nd grade at Culbertson Elementary. The Milligans:
Collette teaching at Culbertson Elementary, she has been there for almost 20 years
Lifetimes of Neighborly Service Marty and Colette Milligan have lived in Newtown Square for many years. In the time they have spent in the community, they have organized events to clean up Darby Creek, manage the parks in Marple Newtown and promote the events and amenities of Delaware County. Marty and Colette first met through an in-person dating service organized through their church. It was surprising and genuine for both of them, as neither expected to meet someone there.
by Craig Whitney
“I was out there like young people were at the time looking in different places to meet the right person, but we end up meeting at the church of all places,” Marty explained with a smile. The mass was at Saint Barnabas in Philadelphia, and the dinner held after the mass was at a local Italian restaurant. The dating service wasn’t the only place Marty and Colette had gone to meet someone, but they found it comforting to have a strong starting foundation that both people have in common. Their shared faith and similar backgrounds made the first dates easier and ensured a set of mutually-shared beliefs, but the true binding connection came from their passion for giving and for motivating people. The pair got married three years later and started their lives in Newtown Square, staying in the community ever since and still living in St Alban’s Circle. Colette has been a teacher in the Marple Newtown School District for twenty years. She currently teaches second grade at Culbertson, and loves having the chance to meet the children, get to know them, and connect with them as much as she can. Continued on page 6

“We go out and meet various organizations, see what they have going on, and share their story,” Marty explained. “I’m happy with my job. I get to be in the field, meeting people and telling people about what we have to offer.” With every open slot of time he has found in his time in Newtown Square, Marty has spent it giving back to the community in various ways. Several years ago, he received the alumni volunteer community award for diligent service to the community.
Marty and Collette with their daughter Jesika and her family
“I love my job, partly because it’s the same school system Jesika went through,” Colette said. Jesika is Colette’s daughter, who now is married with children in Arizona but was raised in the Marple Newtown school district. “Working here feels like I’m giving back to the school for all the things she was able to receive.” One of Colette’s students from second grade would go on to work for Culbertson after graduating Temple University. Working alongside them has been a beautiful sense of coming full circle in her career. “Reading is so important to me. Teaching the children and noticing their improvements by the end of the year, it’s like music to my ears.”
Marty and Colette’s daughter, Jesika, grew up in the Marple Newtown school district and is currently living in Arizona working as a doctor of homeopathic medicine. Marty and Colette love traveling to Arizona as much as possible to see their daughter and three grandchildren. Antonio, who just recently turned six, is now attending kindergarten. Despite the distance, Jesika has remained very close to Marty and Colette. They put the effort in to speak to each other nearly every day, and stay a big part of each other’s lives as if she was still here in Newtown Square. At least twice a year, spring break and the winter season, the two will travel to Arizona and connect with the rest of their family. “We Facetime and talk on the phone all the time, even though we’re far geographically we don’t really feel far,” Colette explained. “It’s the same in a lot of ways, a mother and daughter, she breathes in I breathe out.” Marty has worked in many different fields throughout his career, from Boeing helicopters to the Newtown Square Parks and Recreation Department. Currently, Marty works for Destination Delco, an extensive resource for everything happening in Delaware County. Marty gets to travel around the county, speak with businesses and event leaders, and craft the story of Delaware County.
Marty and Colette volunteer with a Catholic project called preJordan, which prepares families for the religious value of a child’s baptism. In addition, Marty has led the annual Darby Creek cleanup project as a board member of the committee for the past 20 years. As a director for the Newtown Square Parks and Rec Department, Marty has also organized the Walk for the Wounded, which has raised over $2 million for wounded veterans. “There’s such a need for it,” Marty beamed. “People are so busy, they don’t realize that there is life out there and all around them, people and organizations out there that need a helping hand. Not only does it help them but it helps you.” Marty and Colette have lived in Newtown Square for decades, raising a daughter, educating generations of children and lending a helping hand to the people around them. “We love living here. There are a lot of young families, fresh out of the buzz of the city and ready for a slower, more comfortable family life,” Marty said. “It’s an ideal setting here.” “It’s a great place to live, our scenery is some of the best in the country. Parks, restaurants, our church, we really have everything here,” Colette added. The Milligans have been a part of this community for a long time, and they are eager to see what each new day may bring to their community. Whether it is a chance to meet someone new, give something back to the community or help someone in need, the Milligans are excited to be a part of Newtown Square. Identifying Water Damage
Aside from a broken heating system or appliance, water may be the biggest source of frustration for homeowners. Water can do a lot of damage if not managed properly, as it can damage almost every building material. Though most exterior claddings, such as roofing and siding, are specifically engineered to keep your home dry, there can always be instances of leaks, and being able to identify the source is the first step to an efficient repair. Starting in the basement, if you notice moisture on the floor or on the walls, it is likely due to groundwater rising through the slab, or from runoff seeping through a foundation crack. Some homes are just built in areas that used to have natural streams running through them, or are down in a valley. Keeping a basement dry could require a simple repair, or the installation of exterior or interior drainage systems. There are several companies who specialize in precisely this type of work. Finding a water stain on the first floor of a two-story home can get a bit tricky. Though it’s not uncommon for a roof or siding leak to travel through the walls of a home, sometimes it ends
up being an issue with plumbing pipes, or condensation from HVAC ducts. The best way to differentiate these leaks is to establish the location of the water. Is it on an exterior wall? Is it under or above a window? Is it under the bathroom? Is it near an HVAC register? Does it happen only when it rains? If so, is it only during a wind driven rain? Most building owners find water infiltration in the living space located directly below the roof or attic space. At this point, it can really only be a few things; a roof leak, a masonry leak, or condensation. A roof leak can happen because of damaged or missing shingles, nail-pops penetrating back up through the shingle, improperly installed flashing, just to name a few. For these instances, there are specially designed paints and clear sealants used to eliminate this saturation of the materials. These solutions can be the first steps anyone can take to identifying water damage and repairing it. If significant damage has been done, you may need to contact your local professional for further assistance.

Neighborly Advice
New Year’s Advice
from Newtown Square's 103 Year Old Neighbor Mr. Eugene Vickers by Craig Whitney
Newtown Square’s 103-Year-Old Neighbor gives his advice in the new year.
It is not often that a man can live for 100 years, and at 103, one of Newtown Square’s WWII veterans, Mr. Eugene Vickers, has remained healthy and sharp with a great sense of humor. It takes diligence, fortitude and a great belief system to preserve that positivity for 103 years. Here’s some simple advice we gained from Mr. Vickers to help us live a long and happy life.
What is your advice for getting along with people?
What is your best advice for good health?
“Instead of doing things yourself, thinking you can do it on your own, it’s always better to put your trust in the Lord. There’s nothing better than what the Lord has for us. I’ve been trusting in the Lord since I was 17 and it has made all the difference.” Have a Life’s Question for Mr. Vickers? Send your question to cwhitney@bestversionmedia.com.
“The old saying that ‘you are what you eat’ has always been true for me, and I exercise too. Every morning I do stretches, lunges, touch my toes, things like that. If I don’t, I get a bit tied up.”
“I live by a specific verse in the bible: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.’ Proverbs 3:5-6. That’s worked in my life without any question.”
Tell me more about that verse and what it means to you?

Resolutions for a Better Beverage Year New Year’s Resolutions are all the rage this time of year, but often fall by the wayside come February 1st. How can you help guarantee that you stick to your resolutions? By making ones that you are sure to enjoy! Resolve to make 2019 a better beverage year with these tips for expanding your palate and learning about wines, cocktails, beers, and more. 1. Take a break. Make sure you take the time to relax after a busy holiday season. Since you’ll be kicking back this month, spend some of your post-holiday couch time watching a wine-based documentary, like “Sour Grapes” or “SOMM” on Netflix. 2. Try something new. If you are a fan of full-bodied reds, try a wine from Portugal’s Douro or Dao regions. They are excellent values and always delicious. If you are a white wine drinker, try a crisp and mineral driven white wine from Alsace. If you prefer Chardonnay, try a white burgundy like Chablis or Pouilly Fuissé . 3. Try something old… again. Revisit something you think you don’t like. One bad experience can often sour a drinker on an entire category of spirit, but there are always different varieties to explore. For example, if you “don’t drink gin”, what kind of gin don’t you like? There are several different categories of gin, as with all spirits. If the typical London Dry like Beefeater and Tanqueray aren’t your preference, try a more citrusy American Dry like the local Bluecoat distilled in Philadelphia, or the “New Wave” Hendrick’s which is more floral and clean tasting since it is infused with rose petal and cucumber. Taste evolves, so give it another chance!

4. Travel. Take a trip to a wine region or somewhere with lots of breweries. My favorite wine region to visit is the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Fly into Portland and drive out to McMinnville, the heart of Oregon’s wine country. There are also lots of excellent breweries nearby, like Levante in West Chester or Tired Hands in Ardmore. Whenever you are traveling to a new place, make sure to ask what the locals are drinking to get the inside scoop! 5. Host a Wine Tasting. Make a resolution to enjoy some of life’s most civilized and simple pleasures (eating and drinking in good company!) by sharing your newfound knowledge with friends and family. Ask your friendly local Sommelier or do some quick searching online for cool wines and pairings and quick tips on hosting a successful at-home wine tasting. A great resource is an article from VinePair.com called “How to Host the Perfect At-Home Wine Tasting”. From wine pairings to cocktail crafting, you’re sure to learn a lot by following any of the above resolution ideas. Cheers to a boozy and delicious 2019! NS
Early Schools in Newtown
History Spotlight Datestone of Chestnut Grove Seminary
by Doug Humes William Penn, like all visionaries, had particular ideas about how life was going to be in his colony. In 1682, he wrote the first “Frame of Government” which outlined his ideas. Article XII provided that “the Governor and provincial Council shall erect and order all public schools”. This was a new idea – there was no compulsory public education in the world at that time. Most people could not read or write. Tavern signs had pictures of a “Black Swan” or a Spread Eagle or a painting of the King of Prussia, because travelers could not read.

border. That school was replaced in 1870 by the Wyola School, still standing along Rt 252 on the Episcopal School campus. In 1859 another school was built on School Lane, the Chestnut Grove School (still extant – but now a home), and served until 1896 when replaced by the Red Brick School. This last school, built in 1896, was where Alice Grim attended and then taught at with her sister Myrtle. It also is still standing, caddycorner from Gentiles, though completely encased in 20th century plaster coating.

Penn’s Quakers, who were the first to come here from England, took him at his word, and erected schools for their children, which they would then financially support. Over time, they allowed other children to attend, if their parents paid a fee. But in an agrarian economy, jobs were plentiful on the farm and you did not need to read or write to earn a living as a farmhand, or to develop a trade that would give you employment. It was not until 1834 that Pennsylvania took a serious run at compulsory education, passing the Public School Law that required all counties, townships and boroughs to form school districts, build schools, hire teachers and educate all of their children. The Newtown Square Quakers had a succession of early schools on their property. The 1815 school was an octagonal design, and served until replaced by a frame building, still extant as the caretakers house overlooking Rt 252. In 1842, another octagonal school was built on the south side of West Chester Pike – and exists to this day on the Dunwoody property. Newtown had active mills in the northeast corner of the township, and the children that lived up and down the creek along Paper Mill road had to climb up St. Davids road every day to go to the school on Newtown Road close to the Easttown

Business Profile
Tree Care Written by Craig Whitney Ryan Tree Care is a local company that offers various tree services to the people of Newtown Square. The business has expanded over the years to tree inspection and assessment, trimming, stump grinding and 24-hour emergency tree services. Tim Ryan is the owner of Ryan Tree Care and has been a part of the community his whole life, growing up in Newtown Square and attending Marple Newtown school district until graduating in 2001. While attending Marple Newtown High School, Tim worked for Newtown Square Pizza making hoagies, and later working for NSA Beverage, owned by Pete Cristanti, who currently co-owns the Lamb Tavern and Casey’s and is a proud advertiser and previous business profile for this magazine. Ryan Tree Care has been something Tim takes great pride in. The career began like many do, slowly and then all at once. Tim had graduated high school and began working for a tree company, something he enjoyed and was good at from the beginning. The work can be long and strenuous, with many variables that his team has to work with, and what Tim enjoys the most about what he does is the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with a job done truly well. “There’s nothing I like more in this career than the satisfaction of a job well done,” Tim explained. “I love when I go back at the end of a job, everything’s clean and the customer is happy.”
Ryan Tree Care owner, Tim Ryan, on the job with one of his tall tree truck s.
Everything being clean is something that Tim stressed. There is a common misconception, at least as Tim has noticed over time, that tree work is incredibly messy and there will be something left behind, either the stump, debris or torn soil. Ryan Tree Care takes extra pride in the idea that the property will be nicer after the job is done, left better than when they arrived. For example, instead of removing the tree and leaving, Tim’s team will stay to grind the stump, get it to grade level, then add topsoil and seed. When his team has completed the project, the ground will look like it was never disturbed in any way. The need for Tim’s services varies by person, based on the context of the situation and the type of tree. “Many of the tree services we perform are for trees that are dying or decayed,” Tim explained. A declining tree can include instances where the bark is falling off, the tree isn’t blooming the time of year that it should, or there could be a decline in foliage. In those cases, Tim’s team would use various tools and equipment to remove the tree safely and leave the yard better looking than when they arrived. Another common instance of tree service is emergency tree repair. Treefall can be highly unpredictable, and Tim prides himself in being a 24-hour on-call service for storm damage or any fallen tree emergencies. “Something special about the way we operate is we make sure to use the most state-of-the-art equipment,” Tim said. “We have cranes, chippers, bucket trucks, stump grinders, chip trucks, and we’re always looking to improve and update. And we wash our trucks every Friday, my obsessive nature wouldn’t allow my service to arrive with a dirty truck.”

Tim was proud to consider his work ethic slightly obsessive, something he has had ever since he started working. When he isn’t at home with his wife Connie or his eight year-old daughter Ella, he is working or searching for something to work on. This Christmas break, the trio will be going to Disney World for a well-earned vacation. Tim and Connie took Ella to Disney World when she was three, but they are very excited for her experience now that she is older. When he does make time for vacation, Tim likes to go fishing on the bay along the Jersey Shore or spend time with his two French bulldogs, Bentley and April. Time off can be hard to find in his business. There isn’t a season where tree service isn’t possible, the winter can actually be ideal weather because the ground is so hard that the trucks won’t bring up any mud as they cross the backyard.

Debunking the Vent-Free
Gas Fireplace Myth
Vent-free appliances are similar to other space-heating and hearth products, with one exception – they don’t have a vent. There is a large misconception when it comes to vent-free gas, but the truth is there are many valuable benefits to this type of heating. Today, vent-free gas appliances include heaters, fireplaces, fireplace inserts, stoves, and log sets, and every year manufacturers introduce new designs and styles of vent-free products. Converting your wood-burning fireplace to a vent-free gas log set eliminates the hassle and mess of hauling in wood, disposing of ashes, lighting uncooperative kindling, tending the fire, and guarding against stray embers. Additionally, installation costs of vent-free products are up to 60 percent less than the cost of installing vented heating appliances, as there is no need to cut through exterior walls or creating an expensive chimney or vent system. Any of the 62 million homes that are supplied with natural or propane gas can inexpensively have a professional install a vent-free heater, fireplace, stove or log set. A certified installer familiar with vent-free products and local building codes can help you choose the right-sized product for your home and install it properly within an hour. The most common myth about vent-free gas heat is that they are unsafe. First, vent-free appliances feature an automatic safety shut-off device (Oxygen Detection System or ODS). The ODS
turns off the gas in case of a malfunction. Second, with 17 million units installed in the U.S. alone since 1980, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that it is not aware of any documented incident in the CPSC In-Depth Investigation (IDI) database of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning associated with an ODS-equipped vent-free gas heating product. Ventfree gas heaters, fireplaces, stoves and log sets meet all of the most relevant indoor air quality standards and guidelines and have an outstanding safety record. In addition, in 1996 the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance, members of GAMA, an Association of Appliance and Equipment Manufacturers, commissioned an independent research project to be conducted by the American Gas Association Research Division (AGAR). The researchers concluded that “vent-free gas heating products performed well within nationally recognized guidelines for indoor air quality. This research proves that vent-free gas heating products meet applicable emissions requirements even when used over extended time periods, among sensitive populations, and with units whose maximum heat output exceeds the requirements of the space.” This landmark research has been extensively peer-reviewed and has served as the basis for acceptance of vent-free gas products by national code groups and state regulatory agencies. Vent-free gas heating has been proven time and again as a safe option, and for many people it is a cost-efficient and hassle-free alternative to other heating options. NS

Tell me about it
Compiled from…
…resident submissions by Craig Whitney
Mr. and Mrs. Newtown Square had two sons. One was named Mind Your Own Business & the other was named Trouble. One day the two boys decided to play hide and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your Own Business counted to one hundred. Mind Your Own Business began looking for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes.
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Then he started looking in and under cars until a policeman approached him and asked, “What are you doing?” “Playing a game,” the boy replied. “What is your name?” the officer questioned.

“Mind Your Own Business.” Furious the policeman inquired, “Are you looking for trouble?!” The boy replied, “Why, yes I am, how did you know.”

The Importance of the Brow
experience. The effects last up to 12 - 18 months, after which the pigment fades leaving your skin and your natural eyebrows exactly as they were. You can continue to get this done every year to maintain your eyebrow shape.
Eyebrows are one of a person’s most prominent facial features and have many functions they perform. They help accentuate the eyes, shape the face, and play a powerful role in communication. Beautifully groomed eyebrows are a lesser known anti-aging secret.
Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill in over-plucked brows. Call our salon to set up an appointment with our brow specialist, Kelly, to finally get those perfect brows you’ve always wanted! NS
Eyebrows are one of the first things people notice when they look at you. Properly shaped brows give a lift to your face, making your eyes appear larger and more youthful. The right eyebrow shape can frame and flatter the eyes. The wrong one can make you look aged, tired, or angry. However, there is no one “right” eyebrow shape. Everyone is different, but you can establish the right eyebrow shape for YOU by examining your face, bone structure, and eye shape. Eyebrows have the power to completely change the look of the face such as making small eyes appear larger or accentuating eyes that are far apart. While you can’t change your face shape, you can modify your brows, which in effect will alter how your face shape appears. Current brow trends might play a role in the thickness of your brow. In the 90s thin was in! Now we know that was one big beauty mistake! Natural and bold eyebrows may be the biggest beauty trend of the moment. If you’re guilty of over-plucking your eyebrows, there’s a good chance you’re still paying the price today. Whether you have over-tweezed or have sparse and uneven eyebrows, there’s a technique that will whip them back in shape. Microblading! This process can take thin, sparse brows and give them fullness and shape. Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup process in which the pigment is implanted in the upper layers of your skin with a hand-held tool. Drawing hair-like strokes with the tool will mimic the natural hairs in your brow to create the desired fullness and shape for your eyebrows. Our Community
Why I Love
Newtown Square By Leonard B. Altieri, III, Esq.
First and foremost, return on investment! Newtown Township continues to have the lowest tax rate of any municipality in the County with a full time police force. Additionally, the Marple Newtown School District consistently performs well above the Commonwealth average on state exams in English & Language Arts; Math, and, Science. Even with that success, the average tax increase for the School District over the past five (5) years has only been .90%! Another reason why I love Newtown Square, community. Newtown Square has always been and will remain to be, the best place to raise a family and grow old. Sure, we have the traditional organizations for children as any other municipality, such as the Newtown-Edgmont Little League, the Newtown Square Petticoat League, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. As well as service orientated organizations; the Rotary Club of Newtown Square, Newtown Square Railroad Museum and Newtown Square Historical Society, to name a few.

But we also have the Newtown Square Business and Professional Association, an organization that is still dominated by local small businesses who line West Chester Pike, Saint Alban’s Circle and elsewhere in our community. In Newtown Square we have everyday residents who give back to their community on a daily basis. To use just one example, a group of citizens created “Newtown Square in Bloom, a few years back, it is this organization that is responsible for having the hanging flower baskets line West Chester Pike in the spring and summer. Even with the controlled growth the Township has experienced, Newtown Township has not lost its touch, or feel as a small, interwoven community. Yes, traffic has increased, but so has the number of individuals who continue to volunteer to coach our youth, serve our community on Township Boards/Commissions and look out for our neighbors. For these reasons and more, that is why I love Newtown Square! Leonard B. Altieri, III, Esquire is a former member of the Newtown Township Planning Commission, and since 2013, a member of the Marple Newtown School Board. He is currently in his fourth (4th) year as Chairman of the School Board Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Committee. Leonard graduated from Marple Newtown High School in 2008; West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 2012; and the Drexel University, Thomas R. Kline School of Law in 2016. Leonard works at the firm Toscani & Gillin, P.C., in Media, and is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey.

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors
We’re Becoming Known for Hometown Pride and Loyalty! 2018 was a great year for Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. We launched a partnership with business leaders who make it possible for us to have a hometown monthly magazine in print, and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. And that partnership is working because of hometown pride and loyalty now being traded between local businesses and residents of Newtown Township. Since launching, readers of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors have told me how much they enjoy reading their local hometown magazine. And our business leaders, whose sponsorship of Newtown Square can be seen on the pages of your magazine, have told me how readers are rewarding their effort to bring Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine to our community. Our sponsors are known for doing business the right way in our community. I also thank these business leaders for choosing to use their limited marketing budgets to sponsor the residents of Newtown Township. With hometown pride in mind in this new year, consider rewarding that loyalty of our advertising sponsors, with your loyalty, in gratitude for the commitment our sponsors have made to Newtown Township residents in 2019.
I’m also proud to welcome a new world class sponsor and Expert Contributor to Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, Lou Marvil, owner of Level Up Black Belt Academy in Newtown Square. Lou Marvil is a Karate Grand Master and former World Champion who has been teaching Karate for over 30 years. Lou instructs adults and children in self-defense while teaching character skills, goal setting, and to understand that with confidence, nothing is impossible. And Lou does that for our youth right here in our hometown of Newtown Square! This year, consider rewarding the loyalty of our Newtown Square sponsors who make your magazine possible, with a commitment to “Shop Local” and whenever possible, to favor our advertising sponsors for bringing people together by bringing Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine to you each month.
