Soon we’ll be thinking about New Year’s resolutions, but first I’m mindful of what 2019 has brought. Our magazine gained the skills of photographer, Shannon Locher and Liz Burnett, our Content Coordinator. It’s Shannon and Liz, and our very talented Graphic Designer, Kim Cesati, whom I have to thank for our magazine looking sharp every month. I’m grateful too for business owners who have served as advertising Sponsors of Newtown Square residents this year. They make our magazine possible to be designed, printed, and mailed for free and to be online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. Many readers will know our newest Sponsor: Providence Pizzeria Co., on West Chester Pk. at Providence Rd. Please stop to eat-in or call in an order for “Awesome Pizza” and please share a kind word to the owners who truly value Newtown Square residents. (See the new Providence Pizzeria Co. ad on page 9.) We also welcome a Legend this month, new Sponsor, David Linn Cook, the Newtown Square resident who truly is legendary for his expertise in home weatherization and remediation of wet basements. Dave and his partner, Julius Pucala, of Weatherproofing Plus, Inc., save homeowners from their most worrisome concerns. I’m honored that Dave Cook has agreed to serve as an Expert Contributor of Waterproofing & Weatherization feature articles you’ll be seeing on these pages in coming months. For now, see if you recognize the legend, by his photo within the Weatherproofing Plus ad on page 19. What a great year coming to a close. Thank you everyone for all your support of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

Dear Residents, Crisp fall days, football games, Thanksgiving feasts — all signs that “the Holidays” are coming, ready or not! Gift lists, shopping, wrapping, decorating, parties and gatherings with family and friends fill our days and nights with extra laughter, surprises and childlike wonder. Our Calendar on pages 26 - 27 includes some events that may help you start some new family traditions. We’re delighted to introduce you to the Impriano Family this month. They’re a large family that enjoys working, learning and playing together. This month’s Business Profile is about Casey’s Public House, a long-time favorite in Newtown Square for great casual dining, watching sports with friends, and unwinding after long busy days. The staff at this friendly and comfortable neighborhood pub really know how to make you feel at home. As we all hustle and bustle our way through December, checking off our many TO-DOs to prepare for this festive Holiday Season, I’ll deliver to all our dear Readers and Sponsors my wish for you: Joyful Holidays and many Blessings, Good Health, and Prosperity in the New Year!

The Impriano Family enjoying a Fall stroll at Okehocking Preserve

The Imprianos:

Family, First and Foremost Every family shares many experiences as they live together. You’re about to get acquainted with a large and active Newtown Square family that may have perfected the art of happily working, learning and playing together!

by Liz Burnett Photos courtesy of Shannon Lynn Photography www.ShannonLynnPhotography.com

Brad Impriano and his three brothers grew up in Broomall, and they all attended Marple Newtown High School (MNHS). During high school summer vacations, they all worked at their family’s business, Impriano Roofing & Siding, founded in 1973 by their dad, Jack Impriano. Brad and his brothers all started working there full-time after graduation, and they’ve all worked there ever since. Brad quickly learned the skills and know-how required to help grow the family business. Now, Impriano Roofing & Siding serves 5 counties in southeast PA and northern Delaware. Jack Impriano is President, and Brad manages the day-to-day operations and logistics. This family-run and familyoriented business taught Brad how a family can work happily and successfully together year after year. Heather Impriano grew up near Chambersburg, PA. After graduating from Penn State in 1997 with a degree in Marketing and International Business, she moved to Malvern, to work for Unisys, in Marketing for their Computer Systems Hardware Division. Sometimes meetings that happen “by sheer coincidence” end up becoming lifelong relationships: Heather and Brad were introduced to each other in early 1998, by Brad’s best friend who was dating one of Heather’s friends, a former college roommate. That introduction lasted only a few minutes because Heather was heading out to a business dinner and meeting that night. “But that’s all it took, I guess,” Heather said smiling. That little introductory spark ignited a romance, and in September 2000, they got married.

December 2019

By 2006, Brad and Heather, now parents of two young children, decided it was time for Heather to stop working at Unisys so she could be a full-time mom. That’s also the year The Imprianos moved to their home in the Upper St. Albans neighborhood of Newtown Square. “Everyone here is very friendly and welcoming,” said Heather. “We’ve met many neighbors, and our annual Block Party is always a lot of fun!” For the past 10 years, Brad and Heather have studied Tang Soo Do, the more traditional version of Taekwondo, both of which are martial arts disciplines that originated in Korea. They’re students at Kwon’s Martial Arts Academy, and are both 3rddegree Black Belts (very skilled and accomplished). Their familyfirst philosophy motivated them to introduce all their children to this form of martial arts training because it’s one of the few activities that they can all participate in, benefit from and talk about together. Being committed students who take lessons several days each week has helped them all develop confidence and self-defense skills, respect for themselves and others, strength, flexibility and endurance of body, mind and character. And being such long-time students at one local academy has also helped them meet other kids, families and adults who share that same interest and commitment to such a disciplined and rigorous form of personal development. Since 2008, the Impriano Family has attended Newtown Square Presbyterian Church. The services and the church family have been wonderful parts of their Newtown Square community life. Last year, Heather started working there as the Church

Office Administrator, a position she feels quite blessed to have because it allows her to still be very involved with the children and their activities. She often volunteers at their schools and also serves on the MNHS Band’s Executive Board. Now, meet Brad and Heather’s kids! Luke, a 10th-grader at MNHS, plays trumpet and trombone in the Marching, Jazz and Concert Bands. As a Track & Field team member, he participates in Shot Put and Discus. Luke’s also on his school’s swim team and on the St. Albans Swim Club team each summer. He’s a Boy Scout in Troop 315, and was part of a Cradle of Liberty Crew that experienced high-adventure hiking and backpacking for two weeks this summer at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. And since age 6, Luke has studied Tang Soo Do at Kwon’s, and has achieved 2nd-degree Black Belt Madilyn is an 8th-grader at Paxon Hollow Middle School. Since age 5, she has studied Tang Soo Do, and is now a 2nd-degree Black Belt also. At Paxon Hollow, Madilyn does cross-country and track, plays cello in the school orchestra, and looks forward to being in the Jazz Band. Every summer, she enjoys being on the St. Albans Swim Club team. When Madilyn attends MNHS, she’ll probably continue with track, join the swim team, and do color guard or cross-country each Fall. As a member of Paxon Hollow’s Science Olympiad club, she enjoys the research and activities required to serve as a team member at inter-school competitions, so much so that she’s considering a career in Engineering or Science. Ella, age 10, is in 5th grade at Culbertson Elementary School. She plays the flute in the Tiger Band, whose members come from all Marple Newtown School District elementary schools. Ella also studies Tang Soo Do, and is a Cho Dan Bo (the level before Black Belt). She’s also a Junior Girl Scout, dances at From the Top Studio of Dance, and is on the St. Albans swim team. Ella also enjoys caring for her pets: An Abyssinian guinea pig named Cookie and two African dwarf frogs named Karen and Pearl. Ella thinks she’d like to work as an FBI Agent someday. Camille is a 2nd-grader at Culbertson. She likes to “have sleepovers, because you get to play ALL night!” Camille also likes caring for her pet Robo Dwarf hamster named Chubby. She’s in a Brownie troop; she’s also a dance student with Miss Sheila at From the Top; and she’s a Green Belt in Tang Soo Do. Camille eagerly looks forward to being on St. Albans’ Mini swim team next summer. This busy family also has two large dogs, Gretchen and Fae, who found a loving home when the Imprianos adopted them from Providence Animal Center in Media. As dogs often do when you’re out walking them, they’ve helped the Imprianos meet and make friends with neighbors who also have and/or love dogs.

And what does this hard-working family of committed learners do together for FUN? Brad, an avid gardener, uses produce from the family’s backyard vegetable garden to make and bottle his own hot sauce and cans of salsa every year. His oldest brother’s family lives near the high school, and those Impriano cousins are close in age to Brad and Heather’s kids, which makes for frequent and often impromptu fun family gatherings. Most summers, Heather, Brad and their kids enjoy an extended-family vacation with Heather’s Chambersburg-area relatives when they all camp and enjoy the beach at Chincoteague Island. And Brad’s relatives gather frequently every summer at the Impriano family home in Stone Harbor. Whether working, learning, or having fun, The Imprianos keep family first and foremost, front and center, and cherish all those years of happy memories. They’ve also mastered the art of working, learning and having fun with their extended families: Their church, their schools and those who share their sparetime interests. Busy? Sure. Worth the time and effort? They say “Absolutely!”

The Vision of B&E Sportswear’s Bill McDevitt Continues: Sproul Lanes is Now Our Student of the Month Sponsor! Not all business owners are as known and respected as Bill McDevitt, of B&E Sportswear. I’ve known Bill for years. I’ve purchased team apparel from B&E many times. And I’ve seen Bill McDevitt in service to his community through his considerable volunteer involvement with local organizations. That’s why I met with Bill in the Spring of 2018 when strategizing to launch Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. I asked Bill for his support and his idea for how our new magazine could be Bringing People Together. It was Bill McDevitt’s vision that our magazine would use its position in the community to profile a Student of the Month sponsored by a local business. And it was Bill McDevitt who stepped up to serve as our first Student of the Month Sponsor by funding a Wawa gift card for each monthly student award. Bill’s vision has come full circle now, with B&E Sportswear passing the torch to another iconic brand that will continue sponsorship of our Student of the Month. If you grew up going to school in Marple Newtown, you were likely also schooled in how to bowl by visiting Sproul Lanes, which has been Bringing People Together for fun and sport for six decades. Founded and constructed by Abbonizio brothers, Tom, Woody and Dan in 1961, Sproul Lanes has since been remodeled several times by two generations of the Abbonizio family, which faithfully manages this treasured recreation destination, the largest Bowling Center in Delaware County. And now, Sproul Lanes Managing Director, Steve Abbonizio, and Manager Fred Conaway, will continue Sproul Lanes leadership in our community by taking up sponsorship of our Student of the Month award inaugurated by the vision of Bill McDevitt and the community leadership of B&E Sportswear.

has graciously agreed to continue the vision of B&E Sportswear’s Bill McDevitt, by serving as our new Student of the Month Sponsor. Beginning this month, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors’ monthly profile of a middle school or high school student is now “The Sproul Lanes Student of the Month,” a feature article introducing Readers to a local student deserving of this recognition and award.

To be named The Sproul Lanes Student of the Month, the student must reside within the borders of the Marple Newtown School District, but can be attending any Middle School or High School inside or outside the school district. Students are encouraged to nominate themselves as a Student of the Month. Parents, relatives, friends and teacher of students are also encouraged to nominate a deserving student. To nominate a Student of the Month: Send a 200-word email to: SOTM@SproulLanes.com, which shares how you believe a student has demonstrated excellence in friendship to their fellow students or service to their school or local community. Note: Excellence in academics or athletics can be a consideration, but is not required to be named Student of the Month. Thanks to our new Sponsor, Sproul Lanes, our December, 2019 Student of the Month is Michael Volpe, a Senior attending Archbishop John Carroll High School. Congratulations, Mike! Enjoy the Pizza Bowl event that will now be held in your honor for you and your friends, courtesy of Sproul Lanes. NS

We’re pleased to announce that the December Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Archbishop John Carroll High School Senior Mike Volpe! To celebrate this recognition, Mike received a Certificate of Achievement and a gift certificate for a “Pizza Bowl” party from Sproul Lanes, our new Sponsor of this award program. Mike is very deserving of this award: He’s a member of the National Honor Society, the Community Service Corps (CSC), Tri-M (the Music Honor Society; he’s Vice-President), and his school’s TV crew and baseball team. He’s also in Carroll’s Pep Band, Pit Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble, playing drums and all percussion instruments, which he has played since joining St. Anastasia’s school band in 5th grade. And he’s been on Carroll’s baseball team every year, and has umpired for MTLL's summer tournament teams. Mike makes service a priority: He was an altar server at his church, and in high school, has participated in CSC events such as the annual MLK Day of Service and a summer trip with classmates to do home-remodeling for needy people in an out-of-state community. Michael plans on studying Statistics and Data Analytics in college. He’s been accepted into the University of Pittsburgh’s Statistics program, and awaits decisions from several other schools including Penn State. Ways to Comfort & Help a Grieving Friend When a friend loses someone close to them, it’s a natural reaction to want to support and comfort them through that difficult time. That’s what friends do, and you know they’d do the same for you. But what’s the best ways to help?

What NOT to Do or Say One of the natural and normal stages of dealing with the death of a loved one is Grief. Just because it’s a sad (bad) feeling, we shouldn’t encourage or expect anyone to rush through it, to “get it over with” so they can start feeling happy again. Be considerate and keep in mind that hurt needs time to heal. Don’t say “Let me know if you need anything.” Under normal circumstances, many people aren’t comfortable asking for help because they don’t want to burden others. When people are grieving, their normal ability to make decisions is overwhelmed by intense painful emotions. They often literally cannot focus on or express what they need. Asking them to decide how you can help them is a request that’s difficult or impossible for them to fulfill. Also refrain from saying “Your loved one is in a much better place.” Your friend may share your relief that illness or suffering is over

by Robert L. D’Anjolell, Jr. D’Anjollel Memorial Homes

for their dear departed one, but they may not also share your beliefs about what comes after death. A more helpful thing to say is “I’d be honored to listen if you feel like sharing how this experience feels for you.”

Listening as a Form of Love Sometimes people just need someone who will sit with them and listen. Your friend may want to talk about how they’re feeling or just share stories of their loved one. In either case, it’s important to remember to say less and listen more. Experiencing grief as a reaction to loss is appropriate and necessary. Assure your friend that shock, sadness, despair and other “bad” feelings are actually normal. Grieving that never happens or is left unfinished often makes future sad experiences worse. When grief can be expressed verbally, space is created for good feelings such as acceptance and peace of mind. Your compassion, understanding and support will help your grieving friend begin, when they’re ready, to trust that their pain and sadness will eventually be replaced by joy from memories of happier days. BENEFITS OF Light- and DarkColored Roofing One question homeowners frequently ask when purchasing a new roof is whether a specific shingle color is best. Shingles come in many colors, and are commonly categorized as light or dark. While it seems the general consensus is that a white, reflective roof is better, when recommending a shingle color, geography, climate and building type should be primary considerations.

In the U.S., there are several different climates. In states like Arizona, where the temperature rarely drops below freezing, white or reflective roofs are advised. In those hot and warm areas, if shingles will be used (instead of, for example, terracotta tiles), white or light-colored asphalt shingles that have Energy-Star ratings are recommended as an affordable roofing option. Additionally, there are even “cool” roofing materials, both light- and dark-colored, that not only reflect the sun’s UV rays but also have a high thermal emittance quality, which dissipates the absorbed heat quickly. “Cool” roof system temperatures could be 50% cooler than other roofing materials, and could add up to savings of 10-15% on cooling costs! States like Pennsylvania have climates more evenly split between hot and cold. The reflective nature and energy efficiency of a white roof makes sense on large industrial and commercial buildings or any building with a large roof covering. However, there are good reasons why darker roofs will look and perform better in a typical residential and even light commercial setting. Dark-colored roofs warm up quickly, causing ice and snow to melt faster. Snow and ice on a roof for prolonged periods of time leave you susceptible to leaks. This is important, especially on the north-facing side of a home or areas with less sunlight, where you are additionally susceptible to condensation and ice damning. Though ventilation plays the main role in roof performance, a darker roof improves your chances that snow and ice will be eliminated faster because the roof is typically warmer. Finally, all modern asphalt shingles, even those with algaeresistant qualities and mildicides, are composed of more organic fillers than ever before, and they will eventually streak and stain. Darker shingles hide that discoloration better, and it takes several years longer for the staining to become noticeable. Further considering that asphalt shingle roofs are designed to last for 30 years or more, in the northeast U.S. climate, it makes sense to choose a darker color, ensuring your roof (and home) last and look the same for a longer period of time. Business Profile

SINCE 1976

The Neighborhood Pub by Liz Burnett Photos courtesy of Casey’s Public House

Casey’s Public House is a Newtown Square institution, one that has lasted decades in a town that has new businesses coming in every year. The Marple Newtown community has come to know Casey’s as the reliable hometown pub, where people can come in and be treated like family. Full of old traditions and regular updates from the owners Pete Crisanti and Steve Graham, Casey’s continues to be the neighborhood spot. Steve Graham originally created Casey’s in 1976, then a small trolley car-themed restaurant called Casey’s Trolley Stop. The atmosphere was casual and fun, with a trolley set around the restaurant and the original idea being a chain of “trolley stops” that reached from Upper Darby to West Chester. That idea may not have stuck, but there was something central to that concept that persists today. Casey’s is a reliable spot for people to come to when they need somewhere to stop and rest, whether in the middle of a journey down the trolley line or at the end of a long day at work and eager for a neighborhood spot to get something to eat and drink and talk with friends. Pete Crisanti joined Steve as a partner in 2001. Pete’s father owned a meat market in Marple Newtown for years, and after working awhile for his father, Pete opened a beer distributorship in

Outside view of Casey's Public House

Marple Newtown and operated that business for 20 years. When Steve invited Pete to partner as Casey’s co-owner in 2001, Pete had a very proud working history with his community. “I have never left this town in my three careers,” Pete said with pride. Pete and Steve had been friends long before 2001. They both grew up in Newtown Square; attended Saint Anastasia and Marple Newtown High School; and then went into business in Marple Newtown. Pete was immediately excited about Steve’s business partnership idea because it would be something new that was still in his hometown. In 2001, Casey’s was a formal Irish pub: Victorian-style dark mahogany, a long bar, a menu with Irish options such as fish and chips. But now behind the bar there’s a row of large TVs, and new menu items like burgers and tacos. The hybrid nature is something Pete and Steve decided to add as the expectations of the customers changed over time. “Casey’s used to be very formal,” Pete explained. “People weren’t allowed to come in wearing T-shirts. But as things changed over time, the place had to evolve.” Evolution is something Pete and Steve embrace with open arms. The Marple Newtown community is more casual now, more open to go out to the bar and share some drinks, some laughs and a good burger. Where other restaurants have closed down

or refused to adapt, Casey’s has continued to thrive and grow in Marple Newtown. This flexibility is a key factor in why this restaurant has lasted so long. Similar to the way they run their other restaurant, The Porch at The Lamb Tavern in Springfield, Pete and Steve take their relationship with the staff very seriously. A source of great pride is the number of people who have stayed with Casey’s for years. “We have a lot of long-time staff members, and we treat them like family,” Pete said. Some employees have been working at Casey’s for over 20 years. When you walk into Casey’s, you immediately feel “at home.” Everyone behind the bar is laughing and working without missing a beat, almost like they know each other’s next move. Bartenders are having conversations with the locals. A group of friends on the other side of the bar is watching the game. Families with kids are enjoying lunch or dinner out while sharing

news about their busy day. And even someone who’s never been to Marple Newtown feels comfortable enough to join in on the fun. “We’ve had people who’ve never been to Casey’s come up to me at the bar and introduce themselves,” Pete laughed. “They tell me they just moved to the area or they’re trying somewhere new, and I’m just happy they feel that comfortable here.” Comfort and familiarity come easy at Casey’s, even as they introduce new and interesting food and beverage menu items. They’ve provided reliable service to the Marple Newtown community for 33 years. Through all the growth and change, Casey’s has managed to maintain its authentic charm. “We’re very thankful for all the growth in Marple Newtown,” Pete explained. “Competition is good for everyone; it brings more people into the area. We strive to be the go-to neighborhood place, where people come back to after they try other places.” In this age of cookie-cutter chain restaurants, a locally owned one-of-a-kind neighborhood pub like Casey’s is a true treasure. Add Holiday Sparkle with Hair Accessories Holidays include lots of family and friends gatherings, some festive and glitzy, others casual and relaxed. No matter the venue or mood, you want to look your best. Now’s the time to schedule your appointment for a fresh hairstyle and perhaps some color highlights. But also remember you can create lots of new looks and refresh last year’s holiday outfits with all kinds of hair accessory options. For straight or curly hair, it’s easy and inexpensive to add sparkle to your look with glam bobby pins, glittery clips, sequined bows and beaded headbands and ribbons. Treat yourself to a few hours

browsing accessory and department stores and you’re sure to find a new hair accessory for each of the 12 Days of Christmas! Thrift and vintage stores also offer great and often inexpensive finds that are sure to bring compliments and also start some interesting conversations. This is the one time each year you can never wear too much sparkle! A jeweled ponytail holder can turn your simple look into something special. This is also the season for surprises, so create one by wearing a high ponytail and clipping a ring barrette in the middle of your pony’s length. Get creative! Feather clips can add glamour and mystique. Don’t underestimate how pretty you can look with a classic red or green velvet ribbon or bow in your hair. A plain low bun becomes a fashion statement when bedecked with an assortment of regal colored-stone bobby pins. Fabric-covered barrettes can bring out the best in your outfit’s colors and fabrics. Metallic leather hair bows will show you’re ready for some festive fun. Some glint in your hair is very attractive. Silver, gold, rose gold, pearl and rhinestone necklaces and gift wrap ribbons can be woven into hair buns and braids, to blend nicely with your hairstyle and outfit. Just be careful not to overdo it, especially with jeweled holiday hair accessories, which are best placed on one side. Whether you’re going for an elegant, sophisticated and classy look for New Year’s Eve or a casual night out with old friends who are “home for the holidays,” don’t just think of what YOU will wear; think about what YOUR HAIR will wear! Our Community

Why I Love

Newtown Square By Paul Seligson

Paul Seligson

I’m looking forward to ensuing Newtown Square chapters, hastening tree planting and everyone having a good time. Relocating to the Philadelphia area from Miami 30 years ago, what my wife Suzanne and I desired most was a town with a sense of history and old-fashioned feel, located within easy reach of all conveniences. We envisioned a place with rolling hills, majestic trees, period houses, unique businesses, and kind neighbors. Newtown Square fit the bill then as it does now. We thank our lucky stars to wake up surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature in our period mill cottage along the meandering Crum Creek. Never in our wildest dreams did we believe such a bucolic ideal could be found so close to a dynamic town. We enjoy almost-daily workouts at the Ellis Athletic Center. I’m in several tennis leagues, and I also enjoy being head tennis coach for DELCO Special Olympics.

Publisher’s Note: Paul Seligson is a faithful guardian of all that’s great about Newtown Square, and person of service to Newtown Township residents. As President of the Newtown Square Business Association, Paul’s leadership, which encourages Newtown Square residents to “Buy Local” first, is matched only by his volunteer efforts for Newtown Square’s beautification. As a past chairman of Newtown Township’s Parks and Recreation Committee, and Newtown Square in Bloom, Paul Seligson’s contributions make us all proud to be living in Newtown Square. We’re fortunate to have Paul as one of our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. NS

Then, there are the people of Newtown Square: Suzanne and I cherish the warmth and generosity of residents across Newtown Square. I appreciate that the Town has accepted many of my and Newtown Square in Bloom committee ideas to help beautify and connect the community together. I’m on three committees in Newtown Square, and I feel an exhilaration from witnessing the community knitting together at events such as the Arbor Day tree planting, Tree Lighting at St. Albans Circle, and Concert in the Park at Drexel Lodge Park. As Newtown Square continues to grow, I believe there are exciting opportunities to continue to enhance and strengthen the vibrancy of our town and community. I want to help be a part of the process. Currently, I am proposing the addition of tree-lined streets and landscaped medians to our downtown, to make visiting Newtown Square an inviting experience that will benefit all. This would complement the existing welllandscaped residential neighborhoods, and it would help draw attention to our local businesses.

Home Improvements to Do in the Winter to SAVE BIG $$$

Seasonality is often the biggest factor when planning home improvement projects. But there are some projects that you can plan and execute in the “off season” to help you save big.

1. Decks, Patios, and Fencing In our area, the average cost of a 400-sf wood deck is around $6,500. A same size composite deck can easily cost $10,000. And if you’re considering a large patio with built-in seating and a wood-burning oven, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to transform their backyard into $50,000-$100,000 outdoor living room! If adding outdoor living space is on your list for 2020, now is the time to plan! During the colder months, contractors who specialize in these projects are slower and willing to work with you on price. Not only that, they will have more time to spend helping you create your dream project. This is also true about fencing projects. Saving 5-10% on your outdoor project could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Put that towards lighting and an outdoor heater, and start enjoying your beautiful new deck or patio right away!

ning your kitchen, bathroom, or basement renovation could easily take 2 - 3 few months, so use this time wisely! Work with your contractor to plan and purchase materials now. This will save you time and money. When you’ve stocked up on what you need and your plan is in place, your contractor will be ready to execute efficiently without the pressure of other jobs waiting right behind yours. Then, voila! Your new kitchen is ready by Spring when other folks are just getting started and spending full price on materials. NS

From our family to yours, we wish our Newtown Square friends and neighbors a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy New Year!

2. Air Conditioning Colder temps and winter jackets don’t exactly have us thinking about the first inevitable heat wave of 2020. If you plan to install A/C, installing it now can save you thousands. In the off-season, manufacturers tend to offer material discounts on their cooling systems. And your contractor will (1) help you find those deals; (2) thank you for not having to work in extreme heat when installing the system; and (3) be more inclined to loosen up on labor costs, to keep their crew and business rolling during the slower season.

3. Interior Remodeling: Painting, Bathrooms, Kitchens Generally, contractors are slower during the winter and suppliers offer discounts on paint and other building materials. Plan-

Aerial view of Spruce Street Baptist Church

Spruce Street Baptist Church: Caring for You, Sharing Jesus Christ by Liz Burnett Photos courtesy of SSBC Pastor Roland Buccialia

How can a church founded in 1689 still be relevant and thriving 330 years later? Only if its leadership and congregation create a caring, supportive community that nourishes its members’ families so well that they share it from generation to generation. Did you know there IS such a church right here in Newtown Square? Spruce Street Baptist Church (SSBC) at 3701 Gradyville Road in Newtown Square traces its history to 1689 and the founding of Pennypack Baptist Church in northeast Philadelphia. In 1829, a doctrinal difference arose among the church leadership. That resulted in a split and the founding in downtown Philadelphia of SSBC, which was officially assigned the honor and responsibility of carrying on the heritage of the original church. When members started moving to Delaware County, the church purchased land in 1963 for its current location on Gradyville Rd and Rte 252. The fact that William Penn had laid out that exact

Landmark showing history of Spruce Street Baptist Church

Delaware County intersection back in 1681 affirmed for the congregation that every generation of members since 1689 had indeed been good stewards of SSBCs heritage and mission. Since 1986, that same desire to serve and nourish young families as well as the “senior saints” has guided the ministry of current SSBC Pastor, Rev. Dr. Roland Buccialia. Born and raised in Marlton, NJ, he grew up in a home centered on God and teaching the Word of God. After graduating from Baptist Bible College, he earned a Master’s and Doctoral degrees, and has done post-Doctoral studies in Biblical Counseling. Pastor Roland and his wife Lorna, now married almost 40 years, raised their daughter and three sons while he pastored SSBC for the past 33 years. “It’s been a blessing for us to be in Newtown Square. We love the community! All four of our children are local and very much an integral part of our ministry and assist in leadership and service to our church ministry.”

This Bible-based Bible-teaching church has flourished because its worship services are relevant and support people of all ages to grow in their faith and develop deeper relationships with Jesus Christ, their extended family, their church family and their local communities. Service to others deepens all those relationships, Most church operational functions are done by volunteer members of the church family. This framework creates and develops all members’ sense of family participation, partnership and ownership of the ministry itself. Pastor Roland considers his church to be the entire Newtown Township community because, as he puts it, that’s who his heart is called to serve. For over 25 years, he’s been a volunteer Fire/Police Officer and Chaplain for Newtown Township’s Fire and Police Departments. As he supports those first responders who risk their lives to help local residents in crisis, he often sees the words of Jesus in action: Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. The church facility has also served the local community on occasion, as one of several support shelters for local residents after a storm or during personal challenges. The congregation participates in and also sponsors community events. Their annual Live Nativity (this year Fri+Sat December 20+21 6:30pm) is a drive or walk back in time, to experience the joy and simplicity of the very first Christmas. And SSBC is a major heartbeat and central drop-off center for thousands of Operation Christmas Child gift shoeboxes that will be distributed globally by the international relief organization Samaritan’s Purse.

Spruce Street Baptist Church’s heritage and Mission — Caring for the individual through a Bible-centered ministry — has been alive and well in our area literally for centuries. Many generations of their members might agree their longevity is because they love God, love each other, and bring “changeless truths to a constantly changing world.” SSBC extends an open invitation to attend their Sunday 10:45am service and experience “a place where your worship is inward, upward, and outward in service.” NS

Don’t Leave Fall Cleanup Off Your TO-DO List! With winter right around the corner, it’s important to do a fall lawn cleanup. When temperatures are still mild and football games and other fun outdoor activities are calling you, it’s tempting to avoid cleaning up outside because it can be time-consuming and tiring. But a fall cleanup helps reduce the work required for a spring cleanup, when you want to prepare and plant your flowerbeds and do other landscaping.

Talking about nutrients, consider fertilizing your lawn so it has what it needs for optimal future growth. During winter, grasses turn brown when your lawn goes dormant. Even though you can’t see much or any growth, as winter gradually changes to spring, stored nutrients should be readily available as growth resumes and speeds up due to more sunlight and warmer temperatures.

During November and December, most people schedule multiple cleanups because leaves fall at different times. Others choose to wait until the end of December and do one large cleanup after all of the leaves have fallen. Some townships provide curbside collection to remove leaves and lawn debris. If the township you live in doesn’t offer this service, you should consider getting all of that hauled away.

Once fall cleanup is complete, a final cut of your lawn will help manicure the turf for winter. Fall gutter cleaning should also be completed during the same timeframe as your final fall cleanup, to ensure the gutters will be completely clear of all debris before snowfall.

A fall cleanup includes removing from your property (or moving to your mulch pile) all leaves, shrubbery clippings, fallen twigs and tree branches, and other yard debris. If you skip this step, you risk attracting insects and vegetation pests to your lawn and landscaping, and they could end up killing your grass. After cleanup, sun exposure will help your lawn efficiently store nutrients for winter.

Winterizing your lawn’s irrigation system before freezing temperatures arrive is extremely important, to ensure that your sprinkler pipes don’t freeze or break during the winter months. All pipes need to be drained and the water supply needs to be turned off. Don’t forget that critical step or you may discover that you have to repair or replace your irrigation system in the spring. History Spotlight

1945: The Merriest Christmas in History by Doug Humes World War II, the bloodiest and cruelest war in history, ended in August 1945, when Japan surrendered in the face of nuclear annihilation. President Harry Truman encouraged “Operation Magic Carpet,” to bring home as many of our military servicemen and women as possible from Asia and Europe in time for Christmas, causing massive traffic jams and delays in all forms of transportation. To help all those travelers contact home, “Bell Telephone Company and Western Union had reserve and part-time operators standing by to handle probably the heaviest… Christmas Day business in their history.” The weather did not cooperate: By December 20th, the heaviest snowfall in 10 years covered the county, the first white Christmas since 1930, and the deepest snow since 1900.

lights, as wartime blackouts ended. And that year, there were enough turkeys available, and gas was no longer rationed, so you could visit your family and friends. The Chester Times reported: “Delaware County’s first peacetime Christmas in four years promises to be one of the most joyous and meaningful celebrations of the birth of the Prince of Peace. With hundreds of servicemen and women home for the holiday, a picturesque blanket of snow covering the area, and plenty of turkey and gifts for all, Christmas 1945 will be one long to be remembered. …Churches were filled on Sunday …as thankful Delaware Countians turned to prayer – for continued peace throughout the world, for those hospitalized …and for the families of those who gave their lives to bring about once again peacetime Christmases.”

The country had not yet returned to pre-war normal. It takes time to re-tool factories from wartime to peacetime products, so there was still a scarcity of toys and the much-sought-after nylon stockings. Newspapers apologized for the lack of Christmas greetings from advertisers, due only to a newsprint shortage. People were allowed to light up their homes with Christmas

Get into the Holiday Spirit with

Spirit Trends

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Whether you’re looking forward to nights out with friends or hosting the big holiday family party, plan to impress with your knowledge of what’s trending in the spirit world during this spirited season.

Low-Proof and Non-Alcoholic Options Catering to the growing population of health-conscious consumers, spirits advertising Low ABV, Organic, Non-GMO, Vegan, Sugar-Free, Gluten-Free and even No Alcohol are on the rise. Looking to follow this “healthier drinking” trend? Next time you’re out on the town, ask about Mocktails. Once reserved

for pregnant or under-age patrons, mocktails are now hitting menus far and wide. Restaurants are creating elevated and tasty drinks using only non-alcoholic ingredients. Craft breweries are also starting to dial back the alcohol by volume (ABV) in their beers. While old mainstream favorites like Miller and Coors have always averaged about 3.5% ABV, craft beers have been known for high ABVs, sometimes hitting 8 - 9%. Nowadays, some of the top-selling craft beers are “session” ales, combining the traditional hop-forward flavor profile of an IPA but containing much lower alcohol volume. Low-Proof spirits like Ketel One Botanicals and No-Proof spirits like Seedlip are great options, too. Using similar methods of distilling botanicals like juniper and rose petals, these spirits are often compared to gin, minus the burn. They’re flavorful, aromatic and can be mixed with tonic or hot teas for the season’s cold nights.

Tequila, Tequila, Tequila One of the only spirits experiencing a boom right now is tequila, which naturally has less sugar and calories than other spirits when made with 100% agave. If you’re a fan of Blanco or Silver tequila, you should try aged or “rested” styles like Reposado or Añejo, which spend varying amounts of time aging in a barrel before being bottled. Also be on the lookout for Mezcal. Tequila is made using the blue agave plant, but Mezcal can be made from over 30 different varieties of agave. Mezcal gets a smoky flavor from the production process where the hearts of the plants, or “piñas,” are cooked in pits in the ground.

For years, the Craft beer industry controlled the drinking-local market, unless you were lucky enough to live near a beautiful wine region. Nowadays, local distilleries are popping up in small towns everywhere. Although most of us have our go-to brands from larger producers, local distilleries are producing some top-quality spirits for reasonable prices. Check out Brandywine Branch distilling in Elverson, PA; Stateside in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia; and Boardroom Spirits in Lansdale, PA. NEWTOWN SQUARE

Newtown Square Homeowner’s Solution For Sewer Tie-In Savings There are TWO OPTIONS for Sewer Tie-Ins with Township Approval 1. Traditional 4" Gravity System

2. Directional Drilling System

Digging Down to The Sewer Main

Underground Horizontal Drilling

Pros • A Gravity System with a clean out, relies on gradually sloping pipelines for downhill sewage flow. • The sewage flows away from the property and into a sewer main, offering peace of mind for many years. Con • Installing a Gravity System will significantly disturb the homeowner’s landscaping.

Pros • A Directional Drilling System is installed by tunneling underground horizontally, under gardens, driveways and other man-made obstacles. • Installation requires far less disturbance of landscaping. Cons • A Directional Drilling System requires a duplex grinder pump with battery backup (in the event of power loss). • Directional Drilling Systems require bi-annual servicing and owner monitoring.
