July 2022

Dear Friends & Neighbors, Oh my, it’s July! And that means we’re halfway through 2022! That realization hits loud notes on the heels of summer’s arrival. Another summer milestone was July 4th, when many feet ran or walked to a West Chester Pike beat during Marple Newtown’s largest gathering of the year, when the 5K Firecracker Run/Walk and The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade brought thousands of us together.

I was there, in my favorite chair, near the St. Anastasia Church sign, with only one care in mind: to encourage the Broomall Rotary’s 5K Firecracker Runners and Walkers before turning my cheers towards veterans, first responders, musicians, children and contenders for parade float honors. Why did I not run in the 5K or walk in the parade? (Oh boy…think fast Bob…) Why? Because the American Humorist, Will Rogers said, “We can't all be heroes because somebody has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.” That was me on July 4th. The 5K kicked off using the same westbound lanes of West Chester Pike as the parade. Thanks to Broomall Rotary, Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade Committee, and local business Sponsors, this annual combination of American tradition and hometown pride made us mindful how great it is to live in Newtown Square, PA, USA. Please reward those advertising Sponsors of our 4th of July Parade Souvenir Book, just as you reward our Sponsors of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. The investment Sponsors make in our community has again made our parade possible, and also this new issue of your hometown magazine, in print and also online at www. NewtownSquareMag.com. This month, I am particularly thankful for our advertising Sponsor, Pete Crisanti, Owner of Casey’s Public House. Pete heard and answered our call for a needed new Student of The Month Sponsor, and he happily agreed to fund our monthly student profile, which will now be called our “Casey’s Public House Student of The Month.” (See page 10.) Sheila’s news issue includes my introduction of Crissy Everhart in my “About Our Photographer” on page 21. Welcome aboard, Crissy! Thanks for bringing your talent to our pages and for inviting your Newtown Square friends and neighbors to contact you for any professional photography needs we may have this Summer of 2022. Let’s get on with this great full first month of Summer with this new July issue I know you’ll enjoy.

Resident Feature

The Jani Family:

Dedicated to Making a Difference by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Crissy Everhart Photography www.CrissyEverhart.com

We would like to thank Alpha Century Security for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.

This month, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is proud to introduce you to the Jani Family: Vipul, Sheetal, Sarisa, Sumit and their pup Milo. Life for the Janis is rewarding and fun, filled with family, friends and a fierce commitment to giving back to our community. Vipul’s parents are from India and moved to the United States with his older sister shortly before Vipul was born. After living in a few Delaware County neighborhoods, his family, eventually settled down in Newtown Square. It was 1979, when Vipul’s parents purchased a home on Bishop Hollow Rd, on a piece of land big enough to subdivide into three lots, one for each of their children to raise their families together some day. Vipul went to Alice Grimm Elementary School and graduated from Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) where he played on the school’s soccer team. After high school, Vipul went to Goldey-Beacom College where he was an officer in the Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Management. His career path led him to the insurance industry where he worked for a few national insurance companies before forming his own agency in 2005. Sheetal’s story took a few turns before ending up in Newtown Square. She was born in India and lived there with her sister and parents until shortly before her 13th birthday. “My father always said that he wanted to move to the United States, to give his daughters an abundance of opportunity,” Sheetal explained. “The opportunity presented itself when my mother’s sister and her family were living in New Hampshire and agreed to sponsor our move.” Sheetal explained that when a family living in the U.S. sponsors a foreign family, they must attest to government officials that they will take care of the new family until they become established. 6

Vipul and Sheetal Jani

Sheetal’s family made the move to New Hampshire, but Sheetal said that the town was too small for her parents, who were both physicians working towards earning their U.S. credentials to become doctors in the United States. Her family relocated to the Boston area where Sheetal graduated from high school, then to New York where she earned her degree in Political Science from New York Institute of Technology and her law degree from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law School. By this time, Sheetal’s parents had settled in a suburb of Houston where they, along with Sheetal’s sister, still live today. Sheetal began working as a lawyer in the Houston area following law school, before relocating to Pennsylvania. Today, Sheetal works for a mid-size financial technology (FinTech) company handling their internal and external legal matters. With Vipul living in Newtown Square and Sheetal in Texas, the odds of them meeting through mutual friends or a night on the town were slim. “Sheetal and I met in April 1997, through an online match-making platform,” Vipul said. “It was a site that matched young Indian professionals interested in meeting other young Indian professionals.” Vipul and Sheetal began talking on the phone and immediately felt a strong connection. Their conversations eventually got to the point where they were talking for four to five hours each evening.

“The first time we met in person was when Vipul flew to Houston just 10 days after our first phone call,” said Sheetal. “We immediately hit it off and were married a little less than seven months later.” Vipul and Sheetal exchanged vows in Houston that November, and celebrated with a 3-day traditional Indian Hindu wedding ceremony surrounded by family and friends. “We just knew we were right for each other,” remarked Sheetal. “And here we are about to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary!”

and sister shared the same sentiments, so the three siblings settled on the family property and started their families next door to one another, just as their parents had wished. A few years later, Vipul and Sheetal welcomed their daughter, Sarisa, to the family. Sarisa attended Culbertson Elementary, Paxon Hollow Middle School and graduated with honors from MNHS.

The couple honeymooned in St. Lucia before settling down in Newtown Square. “Family is very important to us,” said Sheetal. “I was okay with moving to Newtown Square because we would have Vipul’s family nearby.” Sheetal said that although it was difficult to leave her parents in Houston, having her sister living close to them helped.

The Jani children: Sarisa and Sumit

“My parents moved here,” explained Vipul, “because they wanted my brother, sister and I to have a top-rated education. We all excelled in the Marple Newtown School District, and Sheetal and I wanted the same for our kids.” Vipul’s brother

Sarisa, now a rising University of Pittsburgh Junior who’s studying Political Science, made the Dean’s List in her freshman and sophomore years. Aside from her studies, Sarisa plays trumpet in the varsity marching band, plays recreational soccer, and is a member of the Mu Kappa Upsilon Service Fraternity, the GirlUp Club, Women in Law Club and Women in Politics Club. Sheetal said that Sarisa wants to pursue a career in law.

Sumit is Sarisa’s younger brother. He’ll be a Junior this fall at Marple Newtown High School. Like his sister, Sumit successfully manages his studies with his many extracurricular activities. He plays alto and tenor saxophones in the marching Continued on page 8

Resident Feature band, where he will serve as President next year. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the World Language Honor Society. Sumit serves as Vice-President of the MN IDEA club, plays in the MNHS Jazz Band, and was recently named Vice-President of the Marple Civic Youth Association. Vipul said that Sumit was invited by Stanford University Law to participate in a 10-day Intensive Law and Trial program this summer. Last, but certainly not least, is the Jani’s favorite Shih-Tzu, Milo. “We rescued Milo in 2018,” explained Sheetal. “And although Milo is just five years old, he acts like a grandpa, moving at his own pace and very fond of living a relaxing lifestyle.” Vipul said he cannot imagine life without his little sidekick. “I was the one who was reluctant to get a dog, and now Milo and I are best friends!” Sarisa and Sumit certainly are cut from the same cloth as their parents when it comes to hard work, following their passions and serving their community! That’s understandable because Sheetal and Vipul have given their children such wonderful examples of how they forged their own paths. Both are driven leaders, supportive parents and dedicated volunteers in our community. In their spare time, Vipul and Sheetal are active members of the MNHS Band Parents Association, where Sheetal serves as VicePresident. Vipul has coached community soccer for over 10 years, served on the Newtown Township Municipal Authority for eight years, was a member of the Newtown Square Rotary Club and was a long-time Dancing Dad at the Culbertson Elementary’s Variety Shows. When asked where they find the time to volunteer, Sheetal said, “You only have a limited number of years to be involved with your kids’ activities. Before you know it, they’re off on their own.” Vipul added, “Make those years count and make the time to make a difference.”

The Jani family The Janis’ dog: Milo

The Janis’ perspective on life and dedication to giving back to their community is admirable, especially because a major life-altering event in 2011 could have changed everything. “I was a 42-year-old healthy man when, out of nowhere, I suffered a stroke,” Vipul explained. “The kids were young and it was a very scary time in our lives.” Thankfully, after a few brain surgeries and intense rehabilitation, Vipul made a full recovery. He had no cognitive deficits and was able to return to his work in the life insurance business.

Vipul said that although his stroke turned the family’s lives upside down, the blessing is that they were able to look at life’s challenges and put them in perspective. “We realized that I may not have survived the stroke, and suddenly the small stresses in our everyday lives became much more manageable.” Vipul said that his stroke and recovery also helped him become a better advocate for securing health and life insurance, having first-hand knowledge of how quickly life can change without warning. Vipul and Sheetal agreed that our community and their family helped them through that difficult time. “There were so many families who reached out and offered help!” Sheetal said. “We truly live in a community who cares, and that means the world to us.” Their family motto is to always be positive and think positive, no matter the situation. Vipul, Sheetal, Sarisa, Sumit and Milo: Thank you for sharing your story and your positive messages about life and giving back to your community. We know your dedication makes a difference, and we hope that our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors are inspired to do the same. Shana completed 9th grade at the top of her class academically in June, and can’t wait till September when she’ll be a 10th grader taking part in her favorite subjects – Spanish and Biology. It would be a true understatement to say Shana merely likes the sciences. “I love science!” said Shana. A unique program at ACHS is the Morning TV Crew, which just happens to be Shana’s favorite part of each day. Each member of the team has a specific job, and Shana handles the graphics, which involves choosing and executing the graphics to be used during the broadcast. “I enjoy doing graphics since I get to manage the transitions and backgrounds between the different sections of the show,” said Shana. She also enjoys discussing with her fellow team members what music is to be played during the credits and which daily announcements are to be made. The broadcast is live-streamed on YouTube and emailed to the students, and continues to be a treasured part of the high school’s outreach to students. Shana also takes part in her school’s Community Service Corps (CSC), which handles an area Thanksgiving canned food drive each year, along with wrapping presents at holiday time for sick children at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). If you were to ask the teachers and faculty of ACHS what they think of most when they think of Shana, the answer would often be how polite she is to everyone. She walks down the halls with a smile, greeting her fellow students, teachers and everyone she comes across. She is known to be one of the most respectful, kindest and friendliest students at the school. Shana, your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors congratulate you on winning this award, and for bringing sunshine wherever you go. Best of luck with all your future dreams and goals! NS

It’s Prime Grilling Time July is considered the midpoint of summer, and it’s also National Grilling Month! Now is the time to get your grilling game to the point of mastery that you desire. Gas grills were introduced in the US in 1966, and although the original gas grills were smaller than today’s, the idea and ease of use caught on quickly. Recent developments in manufacturing provide an even more uniform temperature output across the cooking grid. To demonstrate a grill’s ability to heat evenly, manufacturers and sales associates place five slices of bread on premium gas grills (at the center and corners), and after 30 seconds, they remove the slices to reveal perfectly uniform toast — no hot spots or uneven toasting. At first, gas grills were sold exclusively through natural gas utilities. Propane models were added and quickly became widely available for home use. Today, some models offer multi-level cooking grids, separate burner controls, stainless steel griddles and even smoker abilities, which doubles their versatility by allowing backyard chefs to slow-roast and smoke meat, veggies and poultry. Now that you know the history of gas grills, are you ready to perfect your grilling game? 5 Useful Grilling Tips • Wash your hands, utensils and surfaces often. Food safety is paramount when grilling! After handling raw meat, wash your hands thoroughly to help prevent the spread of germs. Wash utensils and surfaces after each use.

• Keep the food cold. Letting food sit out for an extended length of time allows bacteria to grow, which can make people sick. Keep food cold until it is ready to be cooked. Put salads and fruit trays on ice. • Always preheat the grill. A preheated grill helps prevent food from sticking to the grates and helps food cook more evenly. • Monitor your grill. Make sure you know the proper grilling times and temperatures before you start. Use a timer to avoid over- or under-cooking your food. Food should be cooked to at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit before consuming. • Keep your grill clean. Keeping your grill clean extends its life and also helps your food taste even better. Grease or food that’s stuck on the grill grate should be wiped or scraped off immediately after cooking. Now you’re ready to be as much of an expert grilling chef as you desire. Happy Grilling! NS

Value, at the end of the day, is what bridges the gap between low price desires and the premium products we offer at Scott’s Fireplace Products. 484-422-8334

COVID and The Court System COVID has been a challenge to all of us on many different levels, and the court system is no exception. Everyone had to suddenly change the way they’d been conducting business for decades. After being closed in 2020 by a Proclamation from Pennsylvania’s governor in response to the spread of COVID, everyone had to quickly figure out how to adapt to working remotely. This was a monumental task for law firms and courts. IT experts had to be consulted, and equipment and software identified, purchased, installed and implemented while cases and clients were placed in a holding flight pattern. During that time, crime, domestic violence, emergency situations, etc., did not cease to occur. The County courts and law firms were placed in a very difficult situation: having to figure out how to continue to take care of their clients' needs and the community’s needs when the courts were closed. For months, the courts could only handle emergency matters. Delaware County attorneys were bringing emergency motions to the front of the County Courthouse, and leaving them in bins for court personnel to pick up and file. From there, they were brought to a Judge, who would then contact council or unrepresented parties to handle the motion. Can you imagine how hard it was for police departments and District Attorneys’ offices to manage the processing of arrests and domestic violence calls during all of this? The great news is that for the most part, people rose to the occasion and adapted. The courts slowly but surely re-opened.

It was also important that when a child tested positive, the non-custodial parent had to be understanding and resist the desire to retrieve their child, to prevent the further spread. Finally, it became imperative that parents cooperate with each other to facilitate make-up time. The silver lining? It became evident that in most cases, the child was happier seeing their parents working together, plus it saved them all money and time by avoiding attorney fees and court costs. NS

COVID was a problem in custody cases as well. Separated parents didn’t know what to expect with custody arrangements when a child or someone in the household contracted COVID. The good news is that most separated parents handled the issues in a reasonable manner because it was psychologically better for the children and in their own best interests. The unfortunate side of the issue is that contentious parents used COVID as an excuse to alienate the other parent. The courts couldn’t and didn’t stand for this, even with all the difficulties they faced from the closings and restrictions. This meant that the parent who had the child when COVID was contracted had to quarantine the child until a doctor advised otherwise and the other parent would receive make-up time. Bringing People Together can be puzzling but the answers are in our hands! In past years, I riddled trivia questions about our hometown Sponsors, with mention that the Bringing People Together our Sponsors do through our hometown magazine is not a trivial thing, certainly not in these times. The advertising sponsorship you see on our pages is what makes our unique brand of Social Media In Print possible through Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, delivered for free in print by mail, and also available to read online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com.

afford to advertise or sponsor organizations, or with humility, just don’t want to be recognized for their giveback to the community in which they do business, while they do good things for our community in secret. We must always remember there are many ways to support and sponsor residents of Newtown Township. We all saw another great way this month, at the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade, inside the Parade Sponsor booklet, listing the local business sponsors of the parade.

Bringing People Together is certainly not trivial, but it can be puzzling sometimes. What puzzles me about our Bringing People Together mission is why some businesses do not get seen as Sponsors of the community. No doubt, that’s sometimes for good reasons. Some businesses will never advertise. Some just can’t

Rewarding local sponsorship should not be puzzling either. The answer is literally in our hands, on the pages of our hometown magazine. You see these local businesses that sponsor Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. They are business leaders in our community who dedicate a portion of their limited marketing budgets to demonstrate to the residents of Newtown Township how important they are to the success of their business. And that’s not a trivial thing either, but we can have more fun to think about just who these hometown heroes are to us, by providing a little cryptic hint to get you thinking.

BROOMALL EYE CARE Experienced, Friendly Optometry

When it comes to choosing an eye doctor, a major factor to consider is the recommendation of that doctor by friends, family members or coworkers. Word-of-mouth referrals often are the best way to find a friendly, competent and caring eye doctor. Luckily for residents of Marple Newtown, Dr. Michael Allodoli of Broomall Eye Care is a local optometrist who provides relationship-based eye care. Since Dr. Michael Allodoli first opened his practice in 2006, he has built trusting relationships with patients who return year after year and recommend his practice to our friends and neighbors. A Philadelphia native, Dr. Allodoli grew up in Overbrook and attended Malvern Preparatory School for high school, where he especially enjoyed his math and science classes. He went on to study at Temple University and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Biology. He furthered his education at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where he received his master’s degree in Biology and then became a Doctor of Optometry in 1988.

Dr. Michael Allodoli, owner of Broomall Eye Care

Dr. Allodoli began his career as an optometrist working in the retail eyeglass business, performing eye exams and prescribing eyeglasses. Although the job was fast-paced and enjoyable, he said what was missing was forming a personal connection with patients. “Jumping from one appointment to the next didn’t allow much time to get to know any of my patients,” he explained. In 2006 Dr. Allodoli left the retail eyeglass business and opened up his own practice, Broomall Eye Care. For the past 34 years he’s been providing services including eye exams, treatment and eyeglasses. What he discovered was that working for himself has been very fulfilling. “In my own practice, everything is much more personal,” he said. “ When patients come back, they get to see me again, year after year.” Broomall Eye Care provides comprehensive eye care services, including eye exams, eye disorder diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases including astigmatism, glaucoma and cataracts. “Even if you don’t need corrective vision care, these exams are important in order

to monitor your overall eye health and wellness,” said Dr. Allodoli. He explained that regular exams by an eye doctor can help detect a variety of health issues. “Aside from getting access to vision correction like glasses or contacts, an eye exam can offer insight into other healthcare concerns,” he added. Broomall Eye Care is conveniently located in the Lawrence Park Business Center. The office staff and patients know each other by name, seeing the same familiar faces every time they come for their visits. Patients are typically greeted by Dr. Allodoli’s wife Lisa, the office manager, or one of their other friendly staff members. Optician Stephen Lacoste has been with the practice since it opened, and now his son Samuel has joined the team, helping with the insurance side of the business.

neighbors continue to recommend Dr. Allodoli’s practice for eye care. Getting to know his patients so well over the years has allowed him to give each one a more informed diagnosis and treatment plan. Whether you need an eye exam, a routine checkup or eyeglasses, Broomall Eye Care is always accepting new patients of all ages. The Allodolis are longtime Marple Newtown residents. After meeting Lisa at a company Christmas party back when Dr. Allodoli was working in the retail eyeglass business, he and Lisa hit it off, married and decided to settle down in Marple. They raised two sons, Gianmichael and Robert, both of whom graduated from Marple Newtown High School. “We loved raising our children here, getting to know other families and being part of a great community,” he said. The Allodoli’s home in Marple is even close enough for them to walk to work. When they’re not working, an ideal day for them is to spend time in their garden. Although owning a practice doesn’t always allow for many days off, we asked Dr. Allodi where they like to go on vacation. Perhaps no surprise to our readers, they love the Jersey shore, too! ”Working and living in the same community has been fulfilling and enjoyable. It’s also allowed me to make personal connections with my patients,” said Dr. Allodoli. History Spotlight

History of the “Blue Route” by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of Newtown Square Historical Society

Newtown was a sleepy country crossroads for much of its history. Today, it is two miles from I-476. And if different choices had been made, the interstate highway would have crossed right through the eastern portion of the Township. The highway known by some as the “Blue Route” had its roots in regional planning starting in the 1920s. Planning accelerated in the 1950s with the explosive growth of the suburbs and the need for quicker routes through Delaware County, to take pressure off local two-lane north-south roads, Rte. 252 and Rte. 320, that had served the area since the 1700s.

PennDOT map showing three proposed routes

Planners came up with three possible routes through the county, color coded red, blue and green. As with many public improvement projects, everyone wanted the benefits, but no one wanted the highway in their backyard. The Green Route would have entered Newtown near the Community College campus, crossed the Dunwoody property and then run east of Bryn Mawr Avenue into Radnor. In 1960, the Blue Route was chosen, over opposition. Governor Scranton approved the

choice in 1963, over opposition. The final plan received federal approval in 1965, over opposition. Ground was broken in 1966, and sections were built through Marple and Haverford. Those sections sat unused for 25 years, other than by area teenagers. Delays increased the price tag from $30 million in 1956 to an estimated $173 million.

The enactment of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 gave opponents a new tool to fight the highway — Environmental Impact Statements and related court challenges. In 1980, a task force recommended a scaled down version reducing the roadway from six to four lanes south of the West Chester Pike interchange. That proposal was approved by the Federal Highway Administration; and legal appeals followed. While the appeals wound their way through courts, in 1979 the first section opened between the Schuylkill Expressway at Conshohocken and Chemical Road in Plymouth Meeting. In 1986 the US Supreme Court upheld a decision to allow construction to proceed. On December 19, 1991, the Blue Route fully opened to traffic, connecting I-95 in Chester with the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Plymouth Meeting. The final cost of the planned $30 million highway? $750 million. For Newtown residents, the benefits were instantaneous—the airport, I-95, the Walt Whitman Bridge and South Jersey and the Turnpike were all now a 20-minute drive at 65 miles per hour. Safe Tires: Vital to Summer Driving

Edgemont Automotive

Drivers are often concerned about winter tire conditions so they don’t get stuck in snow, but most drivers don’t consider how low tire tread dangers affect summertime driving. The truth is tires need good tread in all seasons. In the same way that deep tire tread helps wick away the snow to help the tire remain in contact with the road, in the spring and summer months, good tire tread will help you maintain control instead of gliding on top of the water (hydroplaning). Tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. New tires typically come with about 10/32 to 12/32 of an inch of tread. Most states have a minimum tread depth specification, and in Pennsylvania, a tread depth of 2/32 or less indicates an unsafe tire. Other conditions like dry rot and road hazards may also doom a tire even if the tread depth is good. There are built-in indicators on tires called wear bars. When the wear bars touch two adjacent treads, the tire is worn out. Have you heard of the penny trick or the quarter test? Place a

penny upside down in the tread. If any part of Lincoln’s head can be seen, you need a new tire because your tread is less than the minimum depth for passing Pennsylvania inspection requirements. Using the same methodology but with George Washington’s head on a quarter, experts say that the quarter test represents 4/32" tread depth, which is the minimum for best performance of the tire. Inspection stations use tread depth gauge readings in three different locations for an official depth-reading. Dry rot can be seen either on the sidewall of the tire as a cross-hatched pattern or lines of cracks around the circumference of the tire. The deeper the cracks, the less safe the tire is. It’s best to let a professional determine if dry rot or sidewall damage is safe enough to keep that tire in service. All vehicle manufacturers today specify what size, load range and speed rating tires should maintain for that particular vehicle to maintain the correct ride and safety features designed for it. This information is on a decal located on the driver’s door frame area and also in the owner’s manual. To avoid drivetrain damage, use the correct tire size, especially in all-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles. Some high-end vehicles come with summer or performance tires, even all-wheel drive SUVs. Manufacturers put these tires on to enhance the handling qualities of the vehicle. If the vehicle is only driven in the warm weather, then all is well. If the vehicle is used year-round, those summer tires may not stick to the road so well in the colder months, raising control issues. In that case, you can switch to all-season performance tires as long as the size and speed rating specifications are followed. Ask your repair facility for details. Have a happy and safe summer driving season!

Curious About What’s in Your Water? Your water quality is crucial to the health of your family, and these days it’s becoming even more of a priority for homeowners. Whether your home has city or public water, or a private well system, the best way to learn about the quality of your water is to have a water sample taken. To treat your specific water concerns, you’ll need to decide whether you want to have a point-of-use system or whole-house treatment. Plumbers recommend you have both to ensure that you’re getting the best water quality for your home.

taste and odor from public water that may have been imparted through the miles of distribution piping and fittings. This type of system basically provides bottle-quality water at every faucet and showerhead, which can extend the life of appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines and hot water tanks from premature failure.

A reverse osmosis (RO) system, which provides drinking water to the kitchen sink, requires a separate faucet and the equipment is neatly stored below the sink. The RO system removes most contaminants, to provide the purest and cleanest drinking water. It protects against lead, arsenic, pesticides and bacteria while also removing fluoride from the water. Typically, an RO system wouldn’t be able to keep up with treating the water for the entire house, so it’s basically used only as a pointof-use solution.

A water softener may be needed if it’s determined that you have hard water. If your water hardness is greater than 7 grains per gallon, then you may want to consider a water softener. Homes in this area often have an average of 10 grains or more. Hard water contains dissolved minerals and metals, which can create ugly stains on sinks, toilets and bathtubs. And mineral deposits such as lime scale can build up on showerheads, pots, glassware, etc. Hard water makes soap and laundry detergent less effective, which can cause clothing and linens to fade and appear dull, along with causing premature wear on fabrics. The minerals found in hard water can also have negative effects on your hair and skin.

A whole-house water filter system filters public water through a bed of granulated activated carbon, to improve the taste by removing the chlorine/chloramine that’s added at the main distribution system, to disinfect and kill germs and protect the water. A whole-house system will remove cloudiness, foul

Quality drinking water is important to our health and well-being, as well as being critical to most items that we purchase and consume in one way or another. It’s definitely a smart idea to have your home’s water tested to make sure you and your family are getting the cleanest, safest water possible.

newtown square FARMERS MARKET

by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Pam Purser

Visitors enjoying the variety of goods for sale

The market is made possible by a forward-thinking and generous group of volunteers, township officials and community leaders. For the past two years, they have been working together to unlock the potential of the St. Albans Circle area by inviting the community to gather there for new and exciting community happenings. That group is called Gather in the Circle and its mission is to make sure this important and unique part of Newtown Square doesn't get left behind and that it continues to thrive.

Urban Roots Farm fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers

Tucked away from all of Newtown Square’s noisy roadwork and never-ending new construction is a little slice of hometown pride called St. Albans Circle. This hidden gem is home to many diverse local businesses, charming, historic buildings and nearby walkable neighborhoods. It’s also home to the Newtown Square Farmers Market, which takes place every Friday afternoon throughout the summer. This is the second year for the market, where local vendors and community members gather in the St. Alban’s Episcopal Church parking lot to sell goods, enjoy entertainment and promote community involvement. The Farmers Market is open every Friday from 3pm to 6pm and features fresh produce from Urban Roots Farm, locally roasted coffee from Our Community Cup Coffee, soaps and fragrances by Urban Essence, soy candles from Sweet Orange Candle Company, traditional Irish treats made by MacDougall’s Cakes and artisan fresh breads from Crusty Delight.

Pam Purser, co-Chair of Gather in the Circle, said, “The farmers market got great support from the community and Newtown Township last year, and we were thrilled that people wanted it to continue! It really feels like we’ve filled a need in our community — a need for connection, conversation and fun.” The Gather in the Circle Committee recognizes the generosity and appreciates the commitment of all the volunteers who help each week. They are also very grateful for our friends at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, who have graciously agreed to host this weekly event. Stay Tuned for the 2022 4th of July Parade Winners! by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade Committee

After a successful return of the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade in 2021, the 2022 sequel did not disappoint! The streets were packed with people and the excitement in the air was electric. Spectators were entertained by marching bands such as Mersey-British Rock Invasion and the Slim Jim & Big Guy Band. Our local marching bands, fire companies and first responders joined in the fun. Local businesses, community clubs and neighborhood residents did not disappoint with their decorated floats, marching groups and costumed individuals. But it was the little ones who stole the show with their creative and festively decorated strollers, wagons, hand-drawn floats and bikes.

The parade ended with a celebration of our great country. Volunteers were on hand to serve pretzels, hot dogs and water. The crowd gathered to listen to The Marple Newtown Community Band play our National Anthem, after which the awards ceremony began. Medals and trophies were given to the top three entries in each division, and their names and photos will be featured in the 2023 parade commemorative book.

All For a Dry Basement A case review of a recent project revealed numerous DIY steps that a home’s owners had taken to correct a chronically wet laundry room window and stone foundation wall, all without any success. Upon site inspection and inquiry of past home improvements, little was found to identify the root cause of the chronic leaks. Even the replacement concrete and driveway contractors had failed to find the answer to this mystery. Those contractors chose to complete major rehab steps instead of looking at the long-overdue wood-framed leaky basement window. The focus needed to be on property maintenance such as gutters and grading. The window itself was inoperable due to multiple attempts to caulk the inside perimeter of the window frame, and the homeowners could not even reach the window to vent it, due to the washer and laundry tub. Visually it looked terrible and was of absolutely no effect against storms. Even the custom-made Plexiglass window-well cover and the galvanized higher window-well liner, which were recently installed, did not improve the situation in the least. The homeowners were so desperate that they started using a sandbag diverter, which was temporarily working far better than any of the extensive exterior renovations.

The new concrete patio had obviously been installed too low. And the recently redone driveway had not been properly sloped away from the house. Unfortunately, correcting those two engineering mistakes would mean starting all over, and that was simply not an option financially or timewise. After the homeowners had endured many expensive but unsuccessful attempted solutions and the resulting sleepless nights, the actual solution was to go after the weakest link of the total project, and not the flaws in previous well-intended steps to “beat the water.” In the end, the solution was to replace the Plexiglass window-well cover, with no change to the two new extended galvanized liners, and install a solid glass-block window with waterproofing cement on three sides. The homeowners also keep handy a few sandbag diverters to use when huge rains are expected. No re-do or backhoe excavation was needed, much to the homeowners’ relief. An experienced weatherproofing specialist can often implement a simple, inexpensive solution that not only eliminates water and moisture problems but also brings homeowners much-needed peace of mind! NELL Holds Field Dedication Ceremony

by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Daren Grande

Newtown Edgmont Little League’s 2022 season may have come to a close, but the love, generosity and team spirit continue all summer long. On the evening of Saturday, June 11th, members of NELL’s Challenger Division gathered under the lights for the final game of the season. It was a special night for the players and their families as they gathered to pay tribute to their head coach, Joe Catania, who passed away on May 1st. The evening was meaningful, emotional and memorable because in the months since Coach Joe passed away, generous donations from all across the country were made to NELL in Joe’s name. The Challenger Division teams Kings and Angels, along with their families, also launched their own campaign to raise over $1,100. Before the game got underway, NELL President Daren Grande was presented with a check for a very special project. “We are going to install a new electronic scoreboard on Field 3,” Daren said. “We are also excited to dedicate this field to Coach Joe. Field 3 will now be named Catania Field.” NELL’s Challenger Division has been in existence for over 30 years. The program was introduced to NELL by Coach Joe and his wife, Maureen, whose two special-needs sons, Jimmy and Luke, were inaugural players. Jimmy and Luke’s brother Matt, who grew up watching his brothers play Challenger baseball, is not only a coach and steady pitcher, but he also sits on NELL’s Board, representing the Challenger Division. After the check presentation and National Anthem, the Kings players took the field. Players from NELL’s 10-year-old division joined them on the field to assist as buddies. The night didn’t end there though. The celebration continued with a DJ playing fun music, an announcer calling the games, and a bonus 12-year-old All-Star game that followed. “It was a special night honoring a very special coach,” Daren said. “His life and legacy will live on here at NELL. Coach Joe deserves nothing less.”

The Power of the Mind and Body Connection

There’s no doubt that moving our bodies makes us feel good, and joining a recreational class or club gives us a sense of feeling like we’re part of a community. Staying active not only keeps people of all ages physically fit and healthy, but provides many social, emotional and intellectual benefits. People have always needed outlets to socialize and connect with others. And if we can improve our mental and physical health in the process, it’s a win-win! Mindful movement and socialization both play integral parts in human development. Mindful movement is a form of physical exercise performed with awareness. Think running, dance, yoga, pilates or any type of movement that can help you become more aware of your body. Because of the mental focus it requires, it trains the body to move more optimally during physical activities and everyday life. Mindful movement can improve health and development in both children and adults, improving concentration, confidence and self-awareness while

improving overall quality of life. Attending a class that combines this kind of physical exercise while doing it with others in a community setting provides individuals with the best of both worlds, boosting their health and happiness and helping expand their circle. Talk about a great way to have fun, meet new people in the community and develop friendships. How do you plan to incorporate more mindful movement into your life? Though it can be difficult to find the time in your busy schedule to prioritize your mental and physical health and wellness, signing up for a class can help jumpstart a well-balanced routine, while keeping you accountable. Take an adult dance class to get out of the house for some much needed you-time, paired with a yoga class to cool down and stretch your muscles, to balance out the cardio. When kids take a summer dance class, they can expel their energy and explore their interests while making new friends. NS

July is National Grilling Month by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

Bring your family and friends together and fire up the grill: July is National Grilling Month! Backyard barbecues, fire pits on the beach and festival parking lots all become places to make delicious meals over a gas grill, coal bed or wood fire. But sometimes the traditional American BBQ fare — burgers and hot dogs — can lose their appeal. So, how can we liven up our gatherings to offer tasty options? We’ve got some great ideas for impressing your guests along with advice from our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors Experts and Sponsors.

Let’s talk grills. Scott Magness, Owner of Scott's Fireplace Products, is an Expert on how to make grilling literally push-button easy. "Compared to charcoal grills and wood fire pits, gas grills

and gas fire pits are not messy, and can start with the push of a button," Scott said. A variety of foods can easily be prepared on a gas grill because temperatures can be controlled and you can set your grill to have a hot side and a cooler side by simply turning different knobs. Other advantages of gas grills: There's no messy charcoal or ashes to clean up. And when it's time to call it a night, you just turn the knobs off and that's it! Grilled Bananas, Anyone? Yes, that’s right! Fruit on the grill makes a good thing even better. That’s because fruit cooked on the grill gets even juicier and the flavor becomes more intense when the natural sugars caramelize over heat. Give it a try! Grab some peaches, melons, pineapple, avocado and even bananas for your next barbeque bash. You’ll be the talk of the neighborhood! When selecting fruit to grill, keep in mind that the firmer the fruit, the better it will hold its shape. For moister fruits like strawberries, use a skewer, and cut oranges, lemons and limes into larger

THOMPSON Custom Painting

pieces so they don’t shrivel up. Try dusting your citrus with sugar before grilling, and serve the slices as a garnish for your summer cocktails.

Almost Family! Instead of burgers and hot dogs this summer, why not literally raise the steaks and grill some filets? When it comes to quality cuts of meat, your local butcher is the place to start. Head over to Luigi & Giovanni’s for quality USDA Choice meats. Popular picks for tender, juicy steaks are ribeye, New York strip steak and filet mignon. Co-Owner Luigi (Lou) Lemme explained that even though grilling temperatures and techniques may vary, it’s important that the meat is at room temperature before placing it on the grill. “This allows the meat to soften and cook more evenly,” Lou advised.

Grilling steak doesn’t have to be difficult if you stick to the basics. “I like to season simply with some salt and pepper,” said Lou. “Then I heat the grill to 500° and cook the steak for three to four minutes on each side.” He explained that the high temperature sears the meat on the outside and leaves the inside tender and juicy. The secret step to success is the final step: allowing the steak to rest. “It’s tempting to cut right into your masterpiece,” said Lou, “but you must let your steak rest covered with aluminum foil for 15 minutes so it can reabsorb the juices that were constricted during grilling.” Serve it with some grilled vegetables and your guests will likely invite themselves back for more!

But what if you’re looking for a lighter alternative? Grill some fish like tuna and salmon. For advice on serving up tender, flaky fish, we turned to Chris Posse, Head Chef over at Casey’s Public House. “I like to marinate tuna filets in a little bit of olive oil and vinegar,” said Chris. “Then I’ll heat up the grill to 500° and cook them for three to four minutes on each side and serve them medium-rare.” In the summer, Chris likes to slice the filets and serve them on top of a healthy green salad. “Salmon is a little tricky because it’s much more fragile than tuna,” Chris warned. “Make sure you oil up your grill first so your filets don’t stick.” He explained that he also cooks salmon on a 500° grill,

but for one minute longer on each side. Chris said that he loves to serve salmon in the summer with seasonal fruit salsas such as watermelon salsa and pineapple salsa. Sounds delicious! Here are a few more delicious options for your next barbecue: • Mushrooms are the new burger. A huge Portobello makes a delicious meat substitute, perfect for the vegetarians in the family. Season each Portobello slice well, and sprinkle some shredded mozzarella cheese on top during the last few minutes of grilling. • Trade your potato salad for some grilled veggies. The best vegetables for grilling are zucchini, peppers of any variety, corn, asparagus, artichokes and tomatoes. • Pizza night can be healthy and fun on the grill, too. Oil the grill so the dough doesn't stick. Prepare homemade pizza dough or thaw a premade ball or disc of pizza dough. Roll the dough into a circle as thick or thin as you’d like. Flour both sides lightly so they’re not too sticky. Place the circular dough on a 500° grill and close the lid. Grill for 3–4 minutes or until slightly brown on the bottom. Flip the dough onto a cookie sheet and add ingredients (sauce, cheese, toppings), then return it to the grill. Lower the temperature to 350°, close the lid and grill the pizza for another 2–3 minutes. For a healthier twist, try a whole wheat crust brushed with olive oil.

Celebrate Summer Place your order TODAY for one of our specialty cakes! We also have an array of cookies and mini pastries to compliment your celebration.

How to Choose the Best Home Ventilation System Indoor air quality affects your health and safety. Opening a window isn’t always possible, so you need other methods to replace stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. Exhaust Fans Most homes have an exhaust fan in each bathroom and a range hood above the stove. These fans extract the moist air created when we take a hot shower or cook something hot and steamy. To work well, the fans must be sized and installed correctly. They also must be kept clean and well-maintained to ensure maximum performance. You will need to have a professional clean out the ductwork annually because a mucked-up duct reduces an exhaust fan’s performance.

Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) Whenever you use a fan to extract air that has already been heated, you have to replace it. Typically outdoor air seeps in to make up the difference when you open the door. It’s not tremendously noticeable because the airflows are small, but it does affect your bill when you have to heat that outdoor air. HRVs take your exhaust air and pass it through a core that transfers some of the heat to the incoming makeup air. This heats the incoming air so that your heating system has less work to do to warm it up to the indoor temperature, saving you energy. Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) While HRVs transfer heat to the incoming air in winter, ERVs transfer both heat and moisture, recovering more energy overall. So in the wintertime, your incoming air would be less dry as the moisture is transferred from the exhaust. In the summer, the incoming air would have some humidity removed by the conditioned exhaust air. Considerations for HRVs and ERVs Because of the push towards energy savings (plus, who wouldn’t want to lower their utility bills, right?), ERVs and HRVs are becoming requirements for new buildings and most renovations in the US and Canada. So what else do you have to consider before taking the leap? 1. Which Air to Pass Through Your range hood will have to remain because you can’t pass grease-laden exhaust air through a heat recovery core. You can also choose to leave your existing bathroom exhaust fans and install an HRV or ERV to provide general ventilation throughout your home. 2. Space Requirement These units are larger than the typical ceiling-mounted exhaust fans, so they need a dedicated space available, with clearances for maintenance. You also need room to install insulated intake and exhaust ductwork.

Celebrating 50 Years with Niemeyers by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Karl Niemeyer We are fortunate to live in an area so rich with both history and local businesses that have stood the test of time, businesses like The Niemeyer Corporation, which has been a staple in our community for more than 70 years. It’s one thing to admire the longevity of a local business, but it’s much rarer to find an employee whose dedication to one company spans half a century! And if you’ve ever stepped foot inside Niemeyers for sales or service of your outdoor power equipment, you know that employee is Jerry Peda.

When thinking back to that day, Jerry laughed. “Wow, 50 years sure does go by fast!” A self-described “people person,” Jerry said that when he first started working at Niemeyers, he did whatever was needed. “I’d sweep the floors, unpack deliveries and assist the mechanics,” he explained. “While I was learning about equipment and replacement parts, I discovered that what I loved the most was getting to know the customers.” Jerry said that these days, the third generation of his original customers are coming in the door. “It’s pretty special.” As the years went by, Jerry worked his way into the sales department. He said that in addition to his customers, he loves to help solve problems and learn about new products with the latest technology. “The newest product these days is the robotic mower,” said Jerry. “It’s amazing that you can mow your lawn using an app on your phone.” Jerry’s dedication to customer service paired with his enthusiasm for mastering products earned him the position of Sales Manager.
