Later this month, Merry Christmas will be celebrated, and we all surely need a Happy New Year after such a stressful 2020. So, celebrate everyone, as we welcome in 2021 and begin the next 20 years of the 21st Century! Before 2020 ends, let’s welcome two Newtown Square icons. One is Niemeyers, a friend of Newtown Square residents for 70 years. Located on S. Newtown Street Rd (diagonal from Gentile’s Market), Niemeyers is the outdoor power equipment provider that has operated there since 1951, with hometown charm and dedication to sales and service of tractors, lawnmowers, snowblowers and all types of outdoor lawn and garden equipment. (See Niemeyers first ad on page 35.) And for Christmas List help, stop in at Niemeyers to meet Karl, Kathy, Josh, Lindsay and Gerry. Niemeyers can Power Up Your Christmas List with gift ideas for loved ones that will give you an edge, your home a clean new look and create a new path heading into 2021. (For me, I hope it’s a snowblower.) The other Newtown Square icon joining us in a bigger role is Sheila TurnerHilliard. Many readers have come to know Sheila as our Expert Contributor of feature articles about Dance and owner of From The Top Dance at Saint Albans Circle. Sheila is known by thousands of Newtown Square families as a dance professional, businesswoman, mother and Newtown Square booster. Sheila has just passed the hat of leadership at From The Top to Helena Berggren, our new Dance Expert. And now, with a little extra time, Sheila has graciously agreed to serve Newtown Square as our magazine’s Content Coordinator, taking over for Christina Manning who has moved on with her career. (Read about Sheila’s new larger role serving Newtown Square residents on page 24.) Thank you, Christina, for your service to Newtown Square. Welcome Sheila. Thank you Niemeyers and thank you to all our advertising Sponsors who have made this magazine possible for Newtown Square residents in 2020. On behalf of our Sponsors and the staff of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com, we wish you Happy Hanukkah, a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year 2021.

Resident Feature

The DeCecco Family: Embracing Opportunities to Make Memories by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com

We would like to thank

for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature. Rachael and Jason DeCecco

This month, we are pleased to introduce you to The DeCecco Family, whose roots run strong and deep in our community. Jason and Rachael DeCecco were both born and raised in our hometown: Rachael in Broomall, and Jason in Newtown Square. And although they first began their married life together in Chester County, they decided to come back “home,” to be closer to their families as they started their own. Jason is the oldest of five, with one brother and three sisters who are also raising their children in Broomall and Newtown Square. Jason attended St. Anastasia’s and graduated from Marple Newtown High School. He attended Widener University where he played one year of football and four years of lacrosse; earned a degree in Chemical Engineering; and served as an active member of The United States Army through Widener’s ROTC program.

Princeton University, earning her degree in Psychology while also being named one of the country’s most decorated athletes in women’s lacrosse. She was a two-time National Champion at Princeton, leading the team to back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003. Rachael is also the only defender in the history of the sport to win the Tewaaraton award, reserved for the most outstanding players in the NCAA, and she was recently inducted into the US Lacrosse National Hall of Fame.

Jason continued his education at Temple University and graduated with an MBA in Business Administration and Management. He completed two year-long tours overseas with the Army: his first in Afghanistan in 2003, and the second in Iraq in 2007. He is now a Senior Manager of Supply Chain Strategy for Johnson & Johnson’s Medical Devices Company.

After graduating from Princeton, Rachael attended The George Washington University, to earn her Masters in Health Care Administration/Management. After a successful 12-year career in the senior living industry, she decided to follow her passion for lacrosse, working in the front office for the Women’s Professional Lacrosse League. Just recently, she has been named the Head of The Premier Lacrosse League Academy, whose mission is to connect the next generation of athletes with the best lacrosse players in the world.

Rachael is the second of four. Her parents, two sisters and one brother also live nearby. Rachael went to Worrall Elementary, Paxon Hollow Middle School and graduated from Marple Newtown High School. She continued her education at

When you grow up in the same town, it’s hard not to cross paths, and that was no different for Rachael and Jason. They had known each other in high school because Rachael was good friends with Jason’s sister. But it wasn’t until Jason was at Widener and

Rachael was a Junior at Marple that the two began dating. Their relationship flourished throughout their college years, and in 2004, Jason found himself proposing at one of Rachael’s favorite spots, the Rose Garden on Princeton’s campus. Jason had just returned from a year-long deployment in Afghanistan and to celebrate, the couple had planned a trip to the Dominican Republic. Jason knew he wanted to propose when he got back from duty, so while overseas, he enlisted the help of Rachael’s dad and asked him to shop for the perfect ring. The plan was to pop the question while the two were in the Carribean, but he simply couldn’t wait. The day before they were scheduled to depart, Jason drove to Princeton, to surprise Rachael where she was watching a lacrosse game. Rachael said, “It was perfect and I am so glad he didn’t wait because we were able to celebrate with our families before we left!” They married in 2005 at St. Anastasia’s, honeymooned in Hawaii and then bought a home in Broomall. Home these days is in Newtown Square and just a few steps away from the baseball and softball fields where this very active family enjoys playing and volunteering. In fact, there probably isn’t a field in Newtown Square or Broomall where you couldn’t find one of the DeCecco kids. Avery, the oldest of Jason and Rachael’s four children, is a 6th-grader at Paxon Hollow Middle School. She is a super-social girl who loves school, reading and softball. Rachael says she’s a “mini mom” who loves helping around the house. Grayson, 9, is a 4th-grader at Culbertson Elementary who loves pretty much

every sport that involves a ball. He’s into football, baseball and lacrosse, to name just a few. Grayson is also a big Country Music fan: Luke Bryan is his favorite artist, and he and Rachael have gone to seven Luke Bryan concerts together. Twins Annie and Stella, age 6, complete the DeCecco crew. They are energetic 1st-graders at Culbertson. Annie loves gymnastics and Stella loves dance. They also enjoy playing softball, especially because their Pop-Pop is their coach. Continued on page 8

The Kelly Family at Machu Picchu in Peru

For the DeCeccos, family is everything. Both sets of parents live just a few minutes away as do all of their combined siblings. Rachael’s parents have 11 grandchildren with one more on the way, and Jason’s parents have 10. That means lots of cousins to grow up with and a lot of support when they need it. Just this past July, Rachael spent the month in Herriman, Utah, for the PLL Championship series, leaving Jason to care for the kids while he worked full-time from home. The planning and organizing took some time, but with an all-hands-on-deck approach, their families stepped in to make it seamless. Rachael loves that they are raising their kids together with their siblings and lifelong friends. Jason loves living here because, “It’s a tight-knit, unique community. We’ve had the opportunity to live pretty much anywhere else, but this is our home.” In addition to both of them working full-time, Rachael and Jason find time to coach and volunteer in the community. Jason is an assistant and a coach for the Marple Jr. Tigers, the Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL) and the Native Lacrosse Club. He also serves on the Newtown Square Environmental Advisory Committee. Rachael coaches for many area lacrosse clubs and clinics and volunteers at Culbertson. Unfortunately this summer, many of those programs did not run due to the pandemic, but instead of sitting idle, the DeCeccos did what they do best, and jumped on an opportunity.

PROUD TO CALL NEWTOWN SQUARE HOME!

While Rachael was wrapping up her time in Utah, she learned that the kids’ schools were going virtual for at least the first few weeks. Knowing that both she and Jason could work remotely, she began searching for houses to rent in Ocean City, New Jersey. “America’s Greatest Family Resort” has been their family’s go-to vacation spot for many years, and she found a perfect place on the south end of the island for them all to enjoy. They packed their bags, laptops and all, and spent four full weeks “zooming” from the beach. It was just the six of them and it was perfect! They made memories, rode bikes, played on the beach and ate endless amounts of ice cream. Hard work, determination, ambition and work ethic is evident when you consider all that Rachael and Jason have accomplished. But equally as important is the abundant love, laughter, adventures and memory making that makes the DeCecco family and their home so very special. How Senior Communities Are Keeping Up with the Changing Times Many senior living communities are undergoing a complete transformation to accommodate the changing tastes and needs of the Baby Boomer generation and to stay current. Gone are the institutionalized facilities of many decades ago, replaced by spacious suites and common spaces, engaging activities and social programming to address many varied interest areas, and even technology centers for staying connected to friends and family. An added and critical challenge for senior communities this year has been to ensure residents are safe during the COVID19 pandemic. These communities are working hard to make sure their residents are being cared for safely while also ensuring they continue to enjoy their retirement years. Assisted

Numerous communities are now allowing visits by family and friends, and most are offering in-person and/or virtual tours for seniors looking to transition to a new home. It is also comforting to know that many communities have been COVID-free since the beginning of the pandemic. Families searching to move their loved one into a community will be pleased to know that safety precautions are being taken very seriously. When families tour a senior living community, they are still required to wear PPE or personal protective equipment. If you choose to visit a loved one, all guests and visitors are required to socially distance while wearing face masks. Some communities are even allowing guests to visit the resident apartments. This allows everyone to stay safe while helping improve the social and emotional wellness of residents and families who can see their loved ones. Choosing the correct senior living community for yourself or loved one can be challenging given the sheer number of options in the immediate area. Professionals are available to help explain the options that would be best suited for yourself or your loved one based on your unique needs. It is especially important to work with someone who knows how the communities are actively adjusting their safety protocols and resident engagement based on the most up-to-date CDC information and state regulations.

Living and Personal Care communities in Pennsylvania have revolutionized the way they care for their residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure the safety of their residents and staff (by following all CDC guidelines and recommendations) while still allowing residents to have a high quality of life and the ability to engage with their friends and family.

Riley is “organized, reliable and kind, and is respected by her peers and teachers for her consistent and gracious interest in others.” Actively involved in her school’s Community Service Corps (CSC) program since 9th grade, Riley has consistently volunteered to help with many outreach programs including two that serve Philadelphia communities. She also initiated and has led a Pen Pal program with a school in north Philly, which has also benefited by receiving art supplies donated as a result of Riley’s leadership. Also since 9th grade, Riley has served as a member of three Varsity sports teams: Water Polo, Swimming and Softball. This year, as Captain for the Varsity Swimming and Softball teams, she will plan and lead several team-bonding activities and events. At graduation, Riley will have received 12 well-deserved Varsity letters! As a Junior and Senior, Riley has worked a few days each week for Episcopal Academy Aquatic Club, teaching children ages 4-8 how to swim. She also serves on EA’s Key Club, which has given her many opportunities to serve as a “school ambassador” by helping with admissions at events and also serving on panel discussions for prospective parents and students. Riley also participates in her school’s Spanish Club and Model UN, and she is Co-President of Team Up: Let's Talk, a group that facilitates opportunities for teens and their parents to discuss difficult topics. Expert Contributor Robert L. D’Anjolell, Jr., F.D. with Robert M. Ash, Certified Preplanning Consultant DANJOLELL Memorial Homes

Pre-Need Funeral Insurance Gives Families Peace of Mind Although your funeral may be years or decades away, getting pre-need insurance (aka pre-planning) is one of the most loving, considerate gifts you can do for your loved ones. When you plan your own service or cremation, it removes from them the worry and burden of funeral costs for those left behind. Instead, your loved ones can focus on the memories and time spent with you. Here are the top five reasons people choose pre-need insurance: 1. When a person makes their own arrangements, they know that their expressed wishes will be carried out and honored the way they intended. 2. Pre-need insurance eliminates an emotional and financial burden for your loved ones. 3. You control funeral costs by setting a budget and sticking to it. 4. You’ll have time to decide what products and services are most important to you and avoid having your loved ones make emotional purchases. 5. If it’s prepaid, funeral homes offer locked-in prices through a pre-planning funding partner. In Pennsylvania, funeral homes cannot keep a family’s prepayment “in house,” in case something would happen and the funeral service went out of business. That’s why pre-arranged funerals and cremations are funded with funeral insurance and the value of the funeral insurance policy is equivalent to the amount of the arrangement that is selected.

In the past, many people put money away in a bank’s reserve account. Nowadays, many financial institutions do not offer such accounts anymore, and it makes more sense to deal directly with a funeral home. You can even choose from different payment options such as choosing to pay in a single payment or on a payment plan. And no matter how much time passes, the costs are locked in, guaranteed and inflation-proof. It’s important to note that funeral homes are unable to guarantee the prices for those providing other parts of the funeral or cremation services such as church and clergy fees, crematory charges, newspaper obituary notices, certified copies of the death certificate, flowers, funeral lunches, etc. The present-day prices of those items can be incorporated into the pre-need insurance, with the understanding that those costs will be applied as a “credit” toward the charges at the time of death. If you’re considering planning for your funeral ahead of time, you’re making a smart choice because doing so can save your family both money and decision-making during an emotionally difficult time. Publisher’s Note: Thanks to Bob Ash for his assistance to Rob D’Anjolell and to DANJOLELL Memorial Homes for guiding us and our families as to how we can let our loved ones know we have already chosen our “Expert” funeral provider and made all funeral arrangements. Bob Ash works with Rob D'Anjolell as DANJOLELL’s Certified Preplanning Consultant available to Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors Readers day or night, to discuss and confirm their choices through a phone meeting or meeting Readers in the comfort of their home, to make informed decisions before the need arises. Bob’s Christmas List for Our Sponsors Bringing People Together Is a Gift

What would you like for Christmas? That question is always uncomfortable for me. I suppose I enjoy giving gifts more than receiving them. I don’t ask that question either. I think of what someone would like and even if it costs a bit more or takes more time to shop, I make the effort. I suppose as they say, It’s the thought that counts, and thought takes effort. And time. That’s what counts in gift giving. This month, I think about our Sponsors of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. What would they like for Christmas? What would I like for them to receive, in gratitude for spending a portion of their limited marketing budgets on us, as residents of Newtown Square, so this magazine can be Bringing People Together all year long in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com? Our Sponsors are on my Christmas List, and I am asking you to put them on yours too. Pick at least one. Find their ad in our magazine and make the effort, visit them, or call them to tell them: Thank You for making our hometown magazine possible. And consider, as your personal show of gratitude, gifting them with your business before the year ends. Buy an item or a gift card. Or tell them you’ll be contracting their services soon. Think how much businesses struggled this year — and still are struggling — due to COVID-19. Consider how their commitment as advertising Sponsors continued to bring our hometown magazine to your door, with cheerful faces and feel-good features every month, for free. Sure, remember your kids’ Teachers, your Letter Carrier, and your Trash Collectors for their faithful service all year. But this year, let’s also remember our hometown Sponsors. Pick a few Sponsors listed on the right, add them to your Christmas List and Shop Local for a Christmas gift this year for someone on your list. And do it with hometown pride that your purchase makes our hometown magazine possible. Stop By… And Make a Purchase! When they say Thank You for your business, tell our Sponsors: No, Thank You... for sponsoring our hometown. Add These Hometown Heroes To Your Christmas Shopping List This Year. NS

Business Profile

Gene Krueger

custom fine furniture Driven Entrepreneur and Craftsman by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Gene Krueger

It’s 7am and the craftsman’s shop doors are open. The smell of newly lacquered wood permeates the air. Lights on, and a new day begins at the carpentry shop of Gene Krueger Fine Furniture. For over 50 years, Gene has been building furniture, but the dreams of a craftsman’s studio, outfitted with all the tools to build exquisite pieces of furniture, was a winding road. Gene’s father, a master craftsman in his own right, gave his sons the knowledge of how to use tools and the character to never fear failure. But becoming a furniture craftsman was only part of a journey of innovation, creativity and growth for one of the county’s leading entrepreneurs and influencers.

Gene Krueger, Craftsman today Gene Krueger, in his NSF days

As a graduate of St. Joseph’s College, Gene’s first calling was as a biology and math teacher as well as track and cross-country coach. In 1964, with his family in mind, Gene decided to pursue a different career and landed a job with Sperry Univac, one of the first mainframe computer companies. He quickly mastered computer languages and designed software at the genesis of the Information Age. Because programming computers was a new industry, it required long and grueling hours similar to the start-up tech businesses of today. Even with the amount of time spent on programming, Gene noticed that many of the IT departments they were working with still faced problems with their computer systems. “I saw those unmet needs as an opportunity,” said Gene, “so I decided to go out on my own and become a consultant and software designer for Philadelphia-area companies.” His entrepreneurial drive was ignited, and Krueger Associates, Inc. was born. Over the years, Gene acquired mainframe computers to manage his clients’ data, and he housed them in the Lawrence Park Industrial Center. As his business grew, so did his staff. Phone centers, data entry and, shortly after, warehousing and shipping facilities were added. The company name also changed to reflect its expansion: National Fulfillment Services reliably served hundreds of national clients and employed thousands of people from our community. A growing business needs furniture, and Gene was up for the task! His passion for craftsmanship would be evident as he built furniture to outfit the call centers, conference rooms and executive desks. His love for his family and friends motivated him to also use his spare time to create many custom furniture pieces for their enjoyment.

Workshop of Gene Krueger, Craftsman

In 2014, Gene retired from NFS, to pursue his dream of creating furniture as a fulltime pursuit. In just its first few years, Gene Krueger Fine Furniture started turning out heirloom-quality tables, cabinets, desks, chests and bookcases. In the years since, Gene has built amazing pieces that grace many homes in our community and beyond, with the satisfaction that they will last for generations. Now more than ever, our homes have become our sanctuaries. Gene Lighted Display Cabinet understands the need for quality pieces that are both beautiful and functional. He recently launched a new line of multi-purpose lap desks. For Gene, business is personal. Customers collaborate on the design, select the hardwoods, style and finishes, to make one-of-a-kind heirloom pieces. “I want my clients to enjoy the

natural beauty, functionality and craftsmanship of fine wood pieces that will last a lifetime and add to the style and comfort of their home,” Gene explained. He says, “In our fast-paced technological society, we are rapidly losing the skills to make things ourselves. It is important that each new generation learn the basic skills to be self-sufficient and experience the joy of creating that made our country the greatest in the world.” NS

“Home” for the Holidays:

Pasta with Peas and Pancetta

From traditional family gatherings to surviving long shopping mall lines, this holiday season unfortunately won’t be filled with the same amount of joy and good cheer as in years gone by. The dark winter nights will feel a bit cooler without the warmth of our family and friends from near and far. In fact, we could all use a little more comfort these days, so why not share a recipe or two while we’re “home” this holiday season? Welcome to Nikki’s kitchen! Nikki Falcone has lived in Newtown Square since she was 8 years old. She and her husband Chuck and their two children, Charlie and Danielle, now live just minutes away from Nikki’s childhood home. Nikki says she loves this community because it feels like “home” everywhere she goes. Her close-knit extended Italian family lives nearby, and they all cherish their time together every holiday season. This year will surely be different. One of Nikki’s favorite things to do is to host the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. She says, “Sadly, not all of my family will be here this year due to the pandemic. Not only will we miss out on quality family time but now I have absolutely no chance of winning our annual pizzelle-making contest, either!” Nikki loves to cook, and is thrilled to share one of her family’s go-to comfort food recipes, Pasta with Peas and Pancetta. It’s a quick, easy dish to make whether you want a simple weeknight meal or you’re in the mood for a big bowl of carbs! She says it pairs well with grilled flatiron steak, a Caesar salad and a bottle of Italian red wine.

Enjoy!!

Best Apple Cake

Pam Lairdieson Photos courtesy of Pam Lairdieson

Now we’ll head to Pam’s kitchen! Pam Lairdieson has lived in Newtown Square for over 20 years. She and her husband Jack have two boys, Chad and Colby. A few of Pam’s favorite things unique to our community are the beauty of the mature trees, walking her dog Jasper on the Goshen trail, the 4th of July parade, and the overall friendliness of the people who live and work here. Pam says that she expects a lot will be different this holiday season. The tradition she will miss the most is waking up at her parents’ house in Berks County on Christmas morning. Aside from the extended quality time with her parents and sisters, she will miss their family meals. “My mom is Polish. For Christmas Eve lunch, we always have galumpkis, kielbasa and pierogies, and homemade crab soup and fondue for Christmas Eve dinner.” Pam enjoys baking and makes over 20 different types of holiday cookies every year for her family. She also makes cookie platters for friends and neighbors who have had a loss or a rough year. Pam is happy to share a favorite recipe, Best Apple Cake, which she says is even tastier the day after! This cake is easy to make and perfect for dessert, breakfast or brunch.

Home Improvements with High ROI for 2021 Despite the unprecedented pandemic, homebuyer traffic is heavy. If you’re thinking about selling your house, this may be a great time to get the best price. One of the best considerations will be home improvement projects that add value to your home. Here are the top 5 home improvement projects that are likely to have the highest return on your investment (ROI): Garage Door Replacement New garage doors improve a home’s beauty and enhance functionality. A broken-down garage door can cause a lot of concerns such as pest entry, flooding, decreased home energy efficiency and safety. With multiple styles and colors, this is a project you will enjoy every time you pull up to your home. Job Cost: $3,791 Resale Value: $4,031

Manufactured Stone Veneer Stone veneer gives your home an instant upgrade in sophistication and your home’s overall appeal. Installation is more cost efficient than building with real stone because it is less expensive to purchase, lighter, and quicker to install, which reduces labor costs. Job Cost: $9,589 Resale Value: $8,607 Siding Replacement | Fiber-Cement Fiber-cement siding has multiple benefits as an added value for your home. It has a longer lifespan; it’s very versatile in style; and it’s resistant to heat and weather. A key feature is that it emulates the classic look of wood while being a durable product that adds years of enjoyment to the home. Job Cost: $17,497 Resale Value: $14,966

Minor Kitchen Remodel | Midrange If you live in your “forever home,” you may choose to go all-out with your dream kitchen. But if you’re considering selling in the near future, cosmetic makeovers will work in your favor and offer an excellent ROI. Minor touch-ups such as replacing old hardware, faucets and appliances is a definite key to increasing your home value. Consider painting cabinets instead of replacing. Even countertops can be replaced with a neutral-colored stone and will work with any buyer’s style. Job Cost: $24,049 Resale Value: $19,178 Deck Addition | Wood Outdoor living space is a key feature on most homebuyers’ wish list. A deck that connects the home with the outdoors not only increases your home’s usable living space, it can also increase your home’s market value and the aesthetic appeal of your home’s exterior.

Expert Contributor TJ Warner JHL Landscaping

How Fall Lawn Cleanup Helps Your Spring Lawn It will soon be too cold for much outdoor activity, so if your fall lawn cleanup is still on your TO-DO list, prioritizing it is highly recommended. Completing that task will not only make your home’s exterior look well cared for, your time and effort spent now will pay dividends in the spring: less to clean up after winter before doing some spring landscaping and preparing and planting your flower beds. Because leaves fall over several months, cleaning them up often understandably depends on your availability. The final cleanup session can be quicker and require less effort if several cleanup sessions have already happened. You can use some leaves as mulch, of course, but should have the rest hauled away. Some townships offer that service, but if yours doesn’t, you should consider getting all that debris hauled away. When doing your fall cleanup, you should remove from your property all leaves (except for what you put in your mulch pile), fallen twigs and tree branches, shrubbery clippings and other yard debris. Skipping this step risks attracting to your lawn and landscaping insects and vegetation pests that could end up killing your grass. After cleanup, exposure to sunlight will help your lawn efficiently store nutrients for winter.

Winterizing your irrigation system requires draining all pipes and turning off the water supply. If you forget or skip that critical step, you may discover in the spring that you must repair or replace your lawn’s irrigation system. NS

Sq A Ne ua w re tow Or n igi na l

Make Your New Year’s Resolution to Entertain Outdoors in 2021.

Fertilizing your lawn is one of the best ways to ensure your lawn has the nutrients it needs for optimal future growth. Even if your grass turns brown during winter, it’s just dormant. As winter gradually changes to spring, your lawn will use stored nutrients as growth resumes and speeds up due to more sunlight and warmer temperatures. So, optimal spring grass growth depends heavily on fall fertilizing. Your final fall cleanup should include a final cut of your lawn, to manicure the turf for winter. Also be sure to thoroughly clean your home’s gutters and downspouts, to ensure the gutters are completely clear of all debris before snowfall. Your lawn’s irrigation system should also be winterized to ensure that your sprinkler pipes don’t freeze or break during the winter months.

About Our Content Coordinator

Welcome to Our Team, Sheila Turner-Hilliard, Everyone's Friend & Neighbor

by Bob Blaisse Content Coordinator, Sheila Turner-Hilliard

As we prepare to say goodbye to a year that has certainly brought us great challenges, twists and turns, here’s one I did not see coming as we close out 2020: a change in our Content Coordinator for Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors. Many readers know Christina Manning, who served as our Content Coordinator for the past seven months. Christina grew up in Newtown Square, and was a standout basketball player at Cardinal O’Hara High School. At Muhlenberg College, she helped lead her teams to multiple conference championships. I want to take this opportunity to thank Christina for her service to our hometown magazine, and wish her all the best as she pursues her writing career on a larger stage. This month, we welcome to Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors our new Content Coordinator, someone most readers already know: Sheila Turner-Hilliard, another Newtown Square celebrity who has served for the past two years as our Dance Instruction Expert Contributor. Sheila has been the proud Owner of From the Top Dance, a studio she founded 16 years ago and developed with the love and support of her family and friends. What started in 2004 as one dance studio in a basement space grew to become a three-studio storefront space in Newtown Square’s Saint Albans Circle, and a home to thousands of dancers who have benefited from high-quality dance instruction “with a twist of fun.” Now, with From the Top’s mission remaining the same and with Sheila continuing to teach her Special Needs classes, she has chosen to step back at the studio, “toss the Top Hat” over to

Special Moments Captured Sierra Clark Photography

Helena Berggren, and to join our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors team as our new Content Coordinator. Helena Berggren, a native of Sweden who began dancing at age nine, will lead the next chapter at From the Top Dance for a new generation of dancers. Helena is just the right person for that role: She is an international award-winning dancer and choreographer in the Swedish, European and World Championships for Jazz, Hip Hop, Show Dance, Disco and Bugg. Helena’s experience, coupled with her passion and business experience, will continue to add more to the experience dancers gain at From the Top. Helena brings new styles of dance and is introducing new health and wellness programs while also planning many charitable performance events for next year. We will all get to know Helena more as she will now serve in the role of our magazine’s Dance Instruction Expert Contributor. Look forward to reading Helena’s features in the months ahead!

The 4th-century Saint Nicholas

We Need a Little Christmas!

One of the earliest versions of Thomas Nast’s Santa illustrations

by Doug Humes Photos are from public domain English-speaking residents have been celebrating Christmas in Newtown since its founding in 1681. But those early settlers would not recognize the holiday we celebrate today. In fact, early 18th-century Quakers treated the day much like every other day except the Sabbath. A 1749 visitor noted: The Quakers did not regard this day any more remarkable than other days. Stores were open, and anyone might sell or purchase what he wanted. …There was no more baking of bread for the Christmas festival than for other days; and no Christmas porridge on Christmas Eve! One did not seem to know what it meant to wish anyone a Merry Christmas. Oddly enough, part of our Christmas tradition grew out of the generosity of a rich man in 4th-century Turkey. Hearing that a certain single woman could not attract suitable marriage prospects because she had no dowry to offer, the man secretly dropped a bag of gold down the family chimney one night, and

the bag got caught in a stocking that had been hung up to dry in the fireplace. Repeated gifts from this man led to his recognition as a saint, St. Nicholas.

Thomas Nast’s colorful musical Santa

Over the years, strands of the Greek Saint Nicholas, the English Father Christmas, and the Dutch Sinterklaas were woven together. In 1823, the poet Clement Clarke Moore gave us the timeless story A Visit from St. Nicholas, and a whole host of Christmas icons: Santa, the airborne sleigh, the flying reindeer, landing on the roof on Christmas Eve, dropping down the chimney with a sack of toys, leaving them for each child, stuffing the stockings hanging by the chimney, and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. In the 1860s, American illustrator Thomas Nast put a face to the man, and his version has become the accepted depiction of our American Santa Claus. A final piece was added in 1866, with a Nast Christmas image showing a village called “Santa Claussville, N.P.” The N.P.? North Pole! Today’s celebrations of Christmas would be unrecognizable to the 18th-century citizens – both the religious celebration with its pageantry and music, and the secular celebration that unites us in our suspension of disbelief on Christmas Eve, as we wait for that jolly old elf to bring presents to the children of the world. And in this trying year of 2020, Lord knows we need a little Christmas! For more history on Newtown Square, Delaware County, and membership information, please visit www.NSHistory.org. N S

Home (Cooking) for the Holidays This holiday season will be undeniably different than past years. With pandemic precautions top of mind, a lot of the group gatherings that typically bring joy to our holidays will not be possible this year. But just because you may not be able to share a meal in the typical way, that doesn’t mean you can’t share a meal at all. A little planning and creativity can help bring your loved ones “together” over a holiday dinner. Plan a recipe exchange. Are you the one friend who always brings your signature meatballs to a holiday party? You might not be attending the party this year, but you can share your secrets so friends can recreate the party flavors at home. Ask

earn a bonus gift card

interested friends to share their favorite holiday recipes in an email exchange, or create a shared recipes document online for family members to add to. Get cooking, and remember to later share with the group how much you enjoyed making their recipes! Special Delivery. You might not be able to indulge your inner party host this year, but you can still spread some cheer from doorstep to doorstep. Surprise friends and family by dropping off a tin of homemade cookies, or send them a box of postal-friendly desserts in the mail. Losing yourself in an afternoon of baking will bring cheer to your own kitchen, too.

Thinking of Purchasing a New Roof? When it’s time to replace your roof, do some research and hire a credentialed and seasoned company. Your roof is arguably the most important part of your home! Gather referrals and recommendations from various sources. But before you call any of them, look a little deeper into each one. Ask neighbors and local friends if they’ve had a recent new-roof experience, how that went and if they’d recommend using that same company. Next, narrow it down to three companies, ideally all of which have been in business for 10+ years. In the business world, longevity is typically an indication of consistent customer satisfaction and reasonable prices. Get and compare estimates from those three companies. Each estimate’s total cost should be within 10-15% of the others. If there’s quite a discrepancy, it’s likely due to a major factor such as a different scope of work, high overhead, no insurance and/or no certifications. Comparing each estimate’s scope of work is one of the most important things a homeowner can do! Everything about the roofing project should be specified, including the number of shingle layers to be removed, type of plywood to be used (if applicable), and other materials such as drip edge metal, underlayment, ice/water shield, shingles, ridge vent, and hip/ridge shingles.

2. Ask how long the company has been installing roofs (or siding, gutters, etc.). A company that has weathered economic ups and downs says a LOT about how well it’s funded and managed. YOUR new roof ’s warranty may depend on THEM staying in business! 3. Ask about a manufacturer’s warranty option for materials and labor. Sometimes such extended warranties are cost prohibitive, but following warranty specifications ensures that the roof is installed correctly and meets current code requirements. (The roof should be installed the same way regardless of whether or not you purchase an extended warranty.)

Here’s a checklist to help you make a well-informed decision:

4. Ask about how the project will be managed (scheduling, job duration, dumpster and material deliveries). Also discuss your expectations that the level of interest and responsiveness of the roofing company you select will remain consistent throughout the whole process.

1. While reviewing each estimate, ask plenty of questions about the ventilation, insulation, plywood/decking quality, flashing and warranty. Ask if anything stands out to the company as a cause for concern. (If there is, they should find and fix it!)

5. Trust your gut and hire the roofing company that you feel meets all your criteria, especially reputation, professionalism and warranty. When it comes to this major investment in your home, price should not be the #1 or only factor to consider. NS

2020 Year-End Tax-Saving Opportunities for Individuals and Businesses For 2020 only, you can deduct contributions to most charities equal to 100% of your income but only if you contribute cash. Normally, the maximum deduction is limited to 60%, so if you’re considering a large one-time contribution, 2020 may be the year to do that. The rules are complicated, and not all charities qualify, so discuss this with your tax advisor. If you are at least age 70½, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) up to $100,000 from a traditional IRA to a charity. Unlike normal IRA distributions, a QCD is not taxable to the IRA owner. The maximum contribution to qualified retirement plans for 2020 is $19,500 for 401(k), 403(b) and 457 plans, plus an extra $6,500 catch-up contribution if you are at least age 50. For SIMPLE Plans, the max contribution is $13,500 plus an extra $3,500 catch-up. And for a traditional IRA, the max contribution is $6,000 plus an extra $1,000 catch-up. Contributions to retirement plans and IRAs are subject to phase-outs based on your income. Other complicated limitations may apply. Your tax advisor can clarify and guide you on this. Starting in 2020, traditional IRA owners can make contributions regardless of their age. The previous maximum age for contributions was 70½.

These rules and definitions are very complicated, and should definitely be discussed with your tax advisor. If you have a business loss in 2018, 2019 or 2020 from a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC or S Corporation, you may be able to receive cash refunds by carrying the loss back five years. Under prior law, loss carrybacks were prohibited, which meant you could only receive tax relief in the future, if ever. If you had a business loss in 2019, you should speak to your tax advisor about filing IRS Form 1045 by December 31, to receive a “Quick Refund” of taxes paid in 2014 through 2018. A qualified business income (QBI) deduction of 20% is allowed for income from a sole proprietorship, partnership, S Corporation and LLC. For example, a business reports $100,00 of income after expenses but only pays tax on $80,000 after the QBI deduction. Your tax advisor can explain options and recommended actions based on your specific situation. NS

Nationally Recognized Accounting & Tax Management Expert HEADQUARTERED IN OUR HOMETOWN!

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) to qualified retirement plan participants and traditional IRA owners must begin at age 72. The good news is that for 2020, all RMDs are waived. Also in 2020, the normal 10% penalty for distributions from retirement plans and IRAs before you are 59½ is waived for up to $100,000 of coronavirus-related distributions. The income tax on these distributions can be spread over three years. Amounts re-contributed within three years will not be taxable.

Before and After

Hand-Tied Hair Extensions Hand-tied extensions are the latest in HOT hair trends! There are tons of extension methods, and there is something super-annoying or terrible for your hair about almost all of them. The Habit Extension Method is probably THE most comfortable and versatile extension method ever designed. The wefts are attached solely using silicone-lined beads and string, so this is also the healthiest extension method available for your hair. If you’re looking for just volume (maybe even just on the sides), a little length to get you through the weird-length phase

when you’re growing out your hair, or a full-on transformation, the Habit Extension Method is totally the way to go.

How Are Habit Extensions put in? Very simply: They require no heat, no glue and no adhesive. First, a track of beads and string are applied to the hair. Then, the wefts are sewn to that string.

Hair cuts • Color Formal finishing • Waxing Spray tanning • Makeup application On- & Off-Site bridal hair & makeup

Can I Put My Hair Up? Yes, of course! You can easily pull your extensions up into a high pony or braids without showing the tracks. For everyday styles and also bridal styles, the Habit Extension Method offers much more versatility and fullness. Each hairline is different, so your extensions will have a custom fit to give you as much freedom with your style as possible. Your salon’s hair stylist can offer more information and can suggest recommended hair extension styles. NS
