ON THE COVER The Falcon Family at their home in Newtown Square
May I suggest that this May, happier times are here again. It’s been a harder winter than we’ve seen in a few years, and a harder year than we’ve endured for as long as most can remember. But my hope is strong that happier, healthier times are ahead, just as I’m reminded of those forces of hope who always trusted that things would turn out well: Our mothers, who gave us life and protected us at a young age, and our nation’s veterans who gave their lives to protect our freedoms. We celebrate and we remember those two icons of life and freedom during May. Happy Mother’s Day to all our Newtown Square moms, grandmothers, stepmoms and mothers who bring motherly wisdom and warmth to others. Thank you, Ladies. And thank you Jean, my wife, who for me and our four sons, makes each of us a better man. Later this month, we also stop to honor our veterans on Memorial Day, and particularly those veterans from Newtown Square who gave their lives in times of war to guard and protect the freedoms we have as a nation. And we also honor living military veterans, for your past and/or current service to our country. Thank you for being a part of our community here in Newtown Square. I’m celebrating Memorial Day weekend as the start of summer. I’ve gotten inoculated and so should everyone, to bring happier times forward. I’m going to be getting my splash on later this month, and my barbecue will be going every weekend with family and friends who have also gotten their shots too. Let’s get back to normal and make summer great again. Don’t forget to take Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors with you to the pool and the beach this summer. Happier times are coming at us. Enjoy them, as I know you’ll enjoy this new May issue that Sheila and our magazine staff and contributors have for you this month.

Spring is in full bloom all over Newtown Square. Fresh air, fragrant flowers and endless days spent outdoors make this season feel extra special this year. Warm weather is always a great reason to enjoy outdoor fun and fabulous food at Rey Azteca, where it’s Cinco de Mayo every day of the year! Their delicious margaritas, authentic Mexican menu and live music on the patio every Saturday night makes a perfect place to gather with friends. Two exciting outdoor projects are happening around town, too. You’ll be able to enjoy our first Native Plant Pop-Up Garden, and our beloved Greer Park is getting a long-overdue makeover. Our featured family is the Falcons, whose home is filled with lots of fun and furbabies! May is National Pet Month and they hope their story will inspire others to rescue animals of their own. We are looking for more Newtown Square families, individuals and organizations to feature in our magazine. If you’d like to nominate someone, please email me at STurnerHilliard@BestVersionMedia.com.

Resident Feature
The Falcon Family Fun, Family & Furbabies by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com
We would like to thank
for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature. For Laurie and Joe Falcon and their three girls, life is filled with family, fun and furbabies! They’ve got lots of room in their hearts and their home to make everyone feel welcome and loved.
Laurie and Joe Falcon
Joe was born and raised in Pittsburgh where he lived with his parents and two younger brothers. He attended St. Edmund’s Academy for grade school, and graduated from Fox Chapel Area High School where he played ice hockey and developed a love for skiing and snowboarding. An active body yet analytical mind led him to Penn State University where he earned his degree in Material Science and Engineering. That’s also where he met Laurie. Laurie was also born in Pittsburgh, but moved to West Chester with her parents and sister Jennie when she was eight years old. She went to Glen Acres Elementary School, Stetson Middle School, then graduated from West Chester East High School where she played lacrosse, served as Class President and was inducted into the Italian Honor Society. She was actively involved at Penn State, where she worked on various committees, was named to Homecoming Court and graduated with a B.A. in Criminal Justice. Laurie and Joe met in their final semester at Penn State where they lived just a few doors away from each other. “A mutual friend introduced us,” said Laurie. The two started spending time together, but with graduation on the horizon and returning home to opposite sides of the state, they weren’t sure how it would work. Joe’s plan after Penn State was to move back to Pittsburgh for Law School, and Laurie was just beginning her job search. Some call it luck, others call it fate. Either way, this couple’s relationship was surely meant to be when Laurie was offered a 6

job in Pittsburgh while Joe studied nearby at Duquesne School of Law. “Laurie’s dad is originally from Pittsburgh and my mom is originally from West Oak Lane,” said Joe, “so, living on either side of the state feels comfortable to us.” After Joe earned his Law Degree, he began working as a Patent and Trademark Lawyer. The two married in January 2004, and settled down in Aspinwall, a quiet suburb of Pittsburgh. But life on the Allegheny River didn’t last long: When Joe accepted an offer to work as a Litigation Associate with Morgan Lewis in Philadelphia, Laurie and Joe packed their bags and headed east. First, they lived in Brigantine, NJ, where Joe had spent his summers as a child. Then they rented a home in Ardmore, for a shorter commute for Joe. In 2004, they bought their first home, on Barren Rd in Newtown Square. “We fell in love with the community and really liked the Marple Newtown School District,” Joe said. Barren Rd was home for 10 years, but their growing family needed more space. After a tireless search, Laurie and Joe found their forever home on one of the very last streets in Newtown Township. Still in the school district, this larger home had a big back yard. Little did they know then how valuable that yard would soon become! Lillie is the oldest of Laurie and Joe’s kids. “She is loving, caring and hard-working,” said Joe. A Freshman at Villa Maria Academy, Lillie enjoys being involved in her school’s newspaper, orchestra and Respect Life Club. She is also the Manager of Villa Maria’s basketball team. She loves studying French and
graphic design. Outside of school, Lillie can be found on the golf course or practicing archery. Emilia, an outdoor-adventure enthusiast like her father, loves snowboarding and riding ATVs with her dad. She is an 8th-grader at Paxon Hollow Middle School. “Emilia is determined, funny and sincere,” said Laurie. She plays volleyball and softball and also loves learning French. Emilia is excited to continue her education next year as a Freshman at Villa Maria Academy. Maren is a 5th-grade student at Culbertson Elementary School. Laurie says that Maren is sweet and funny but also strongwilled. While she loves outdoor activities like her older sisters, Maren also loves music, dance and art. “Maren completed our family,” said Laurie. “She was such a welcome gift after we suffered a very traumatic loss.” That loss was of their daughter, Adalyn Clare, in 2009. Laurie was 32 weeks pregnant with Adalyn when she passed away. “Losing Adalyn impacted everyone, including Maren who was born after,” said Laurie. “I remember when I was having my girls, people would say that you just know when you are finished having children. I never experienced that because it always feels like someone is missing, and that void will always be there.” Comfort from loss and finding purpose in life comes in many forms, with pets ranking high on that list. In early 2016, Joe and Laurie began discussing how a dog might bring joy to
Lillie, Emilia and Maren
their family. “Growing up, I never had a dog,” said Laurie, “so I was hesitant because of the responsibility involved.” Joe, however, had no reservations, so they started their search. Since that time, the Falcon family has welcomed into their home three rescue dogs, two cats and a hamster! With May being National Pet Month and May 20th marking National Rescue Dog Day, Laurie and Joe wanted to share their story so others might consider adopting or fostering a rescue dog of their own. Resident Feature Butch is the first dog Joe and Laurie adopted. “I found Butch on the SPCA website,” Joe explained. “When we went to meet Butch, he immediately ran right up to us, rolled over for a belly scratch, and then gently took a treat out of one of our girls’ hands. Butch chose us, as the saying goes,” Joe added.
a limitation on what breed of dog. And that huge back yard for the dogs to play in certainly helps. “So many homeless dogs are neglected or abandoned!” said Laurie. “If we can make the lives of at least three of them better, we will.” A lot has changed for once-hesitant Laurie. She laughed when she said, “I would love to have more!”
After they adopted Butch, Laurie started sharing You might think that with info about rescue dogs on three girls, three dogs, two Facebook, to help connect cats and a hamster, there people to foster and adopt isn’t much time for anyThe Falcons with their rescue dogs: Henry, Bella and Butch dogs. “Butch stole my heart,” thing else. Although Laurie was hesitant about raising and training a puppy, Henry quickly became her sidekick. He follows her everywhere and is always looking for something to eat. “These dogs are the best additions to our family!” said Joe. “They bring laughter, comfort and joy every day.” For the Falcons, adopting a rescue is perfect because they don’t have

Since 2017, Joe has been Chair of the Intellectual Property law section at the Chester County Bar Association, and in July 2020, he was named Chair of the Patent Legislation Committee of the American Bar Association’s Intellectual Property law section. He is a former President of NSPL, and served on Delaware County Habitat for Humanity’s Board of Directors. At Newtown Square Presbyterian, Joe occasionally serves as Elder and Deacon. How Exterior Lighting Can Make Your Home Safe and Welcoming in the Evening Hours Lighting around your home’s exterior can provide safety, security, and a sense of pride and enjoyment in daylight and especially at night. Landscape lighting around your home can range from a simple wall light to a spectacular scene. Today, light fixtures and light bulbs are available in a seemingly endless variety of sizes, shapes, designs and colors. And the quality of lighting systems and fixtures ranges from plug-and-play like what the “big box” stores sell with little or no warranty, to bronze fixtures that have a lifetime warranty. As an essential business, Martella Electric is OPEN & AVAILABLE!
With advances in wireless bluetooth technology, the internet and WiFi, lights can be controlled from your handheld device, desktop computer, laptop computer and so on. The ability to turn lights on and off at any time of day and even to adjust light levels are all in your control, depending on how sophisticated you want to be. When choosing landscape lighting fixtures, your choices are plentiful. A few of the many applications are path lights, up lights, flood lights, lights that wash light on walls, lamp post lights, and lighting in masonry walls along paths and around pool decks.
Martella Electric Company is a team of courteous, professional, and highly trained electricians. Our priority is to deliver superior customer service backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee. • Electrical Service Upgrades • Landscape Lighting • Circuit Breaker Panels • Fireguard Circuit Breakers • Security Lighting • Recessed Lighting • Electric Vehicle Charging • LED Under-Cabinet Lighting • Lighting Controls • Exhaust Fans
When considering starting a new lighting plan, upgrading what you have or just repairing your home’s current light fixtures and bulbs, take a look around. Go to the internet and have fun searching products, systems and accessories. You might also take a drive at night, to observe other homes’ lighting effects and get ideas for what might be best for your home.

A lighting system doesn’t need to be elaborate to be effective. Path lighting that’s pleasing to look at in the daylight becomes a practical safety feature at night. Most times, just a few simple lights strategically placed can make your home quite pleasant to look at. For a more dramatic effect at night, use up lighting that washes your home’s features, trees and shrubs in light. Some home security lighting systems can even easily integrate with your home’s landscape lighting plan, flood lights and your video doorbell/camera system.
May 2021
Whatever you decide your security and landscape lighting needs are, be safe in what you do. If you’re a do-it-yourself type of person, have a blast. But if you’re not confident or skilled with electrical projects, you should consult a professional. Electricity is our friend when used safely and wisely. NS

Our Community
Greer Park Restoring, Revitalizing and Renewing by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of Wade Pollock
Newtown Square residents will soon be able to enjoy a beautiful, vibrant, revitalized community park with open space and amenities for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Greer Park, located on Winding Way in the St. Albans section of Newtown Square, is getting a long-overdue makeover that will not only be aesthetically pleasing, but will also benefit the environment and wildlife. This 6-acre parcel of land has a fascinating history and is the first of our public parks to undergo extensive renovations. For over two years, Newtown Township’s Board of Supervisors has worked with a select Steering Committee, to determine the best way to address and remedy a long list of growing environmental concerns. At the top of that list: What to do with the silt-filled pond and eroding stream.
Concept of new park layout
Sometimes, the only way to move forward is to take a few steps back. In this case, we need to step all the way back to the late 1800s when the stream, known as Foxes Run, flowed freely through the property and into Darby Creek. At the time, the land was owned by The Pennsylvania Hospital, which had established multiple farms throughout our area. The hospital needed easier access to water, so Foxes Run was dammed, creating the pond as we know it today. Then in 1946, the hospital privately sold the farmlands, but not before deeding a 6-acre portion to Newtown Township for public use.

Seven decades later, the time has come to make changes and restore Foxes Run to its original course. In the fall of 2018, the Township applied for and received grant funding from Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development and the Department of Conservation of Natural Resources to write a master plan that would address the environmental issues as well as improve resident usability and accessibility. The Steering Committee outlined four main goals: Determine the best option for the pond; Develop permeable
(eco-friendly) walking paths and trails; Define the best play equipment options; and Develop recreational opportunities for all ages and abilities. Wade Pollock, a retired Business Analyst with Boeing and a St. Albans area resident, led the Steering Committee. Together with neighboring residents and representatives from Newtown Township’s Environmental Advisory Committee, Parks and Recreation Committee and Newtown Square in Bloom, the team developed solid concept plans that not only satisfied their original goals but also included new state-of-the-art amenities. Wade is proud of the committee’s hard work. “This project will serve as an extreme benefit to the environment,” he said, “and it will also provide our neighbors with safe places to walk and appreciate nature.” Visitors to Greer Park will enjoy new, eco-friendly walking paths, open water features and fishing opportunities. More access points to the stream will be added for little ones to explore, and two age-appropriate playgrounds with adaptive equipment will be installed along with free play areas and a lawn volleyball court. Friends and families who want to gather safely will be able to choose from three covered pavilions and plenty of surrounding open space. And those folks who hold this park and the pond close to their hearts will be happy to know that the pond will not be completely filled in. Instead, the dam will be removed, and water will flow freely through the pond continuing downstream to Darby Creek, the way nature had always intended.

Bringing People Together: This is Social Media, In Print! And Reader Leaders Are on the Front Lines. Who decides which Newtown Square resident will be on the cover every month? What kind of response do businesses gain from advertising? Where do you find features published every month about youth, seniors, and organizations in Newtown Township? Why would anyone want to read a magazine when there’s the Internet? And…How is it possible that Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine can look so classy, be mailed for free to so many homes in Newtown Square every month, and yet not be crammed with nothing but ads?
Those are the Who, What, Where, Why and How questions I am asked every day. And while there’s a longer answer for each question, if I had to offer the same two-word answer for each question, it would be this: Reader Leaders. What’s a Reader Leader? It’s anyone who looks forward to receiving Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine in the mail each month and knows our advertising Sponsors make it possible. It’s readers like you, willing to vote with your wallet to show outright favoritism for any business whose ads are seen

How we choose our cover, who will be our Student of the Month, which feature article we publish, it all comes from you, through your emails that result in Bringing People Together through your good ideas that end up on these pages. MEXICAN RESTAURANT
A Piece of Mexico in Newtown Square: Celebrating Cinco de Mayo All Year Long! by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Think you have to wait for National Guacamole Day, Taco Tuesday or even Cinco de Mayo to celebrate and enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine? Think again! At Rey Azteca, every day — especially in May — is a reason to celebrate!

Yes folks, there is a “piece of Mexico” right here in Newtown Square. Tucked away in the Edgmont shopping center is Rey Azteca, serving up authentic Mexican food made with high-quality ingredients. Since opening its doors in January 2020, patrons have been raving about their mouth-watering variety of delicious food served in a vibrant and family-friendly atmosphere. Their lunch and dinner menus are endless. And their margaritas are, quite simply, Perfecta!
opportunity to grow with an active, bustling community. “Even though Alan and I are the co-Owners of Rey Azteca,” Jenny said, “it is and will always be a family effort.” Their families are always helping them change up the menu, to add even more delectable dishes or to modify their guacamole and make it “just right.” And Jenny’s father and uncle came up with the name Rey Azteca. Rey means ‘King’ so why not be the King of the Aztecs and, well, of food.
Rey Azteca’s co-Owner Jenny Palacios grew up in the restaurant industry. She worked in her family’s multiple restaurants, at the cash register, as a Server and as a Hostess, but mostly learning the restaurant business from her father. Jenny fell in love with it but wasn’t sold on the idea of making it a career until she met and married Alan Lamarca, who shared her enjoyment of the restaurant scene. Jenny and Alan decided to team up and start their own restaurant.
Opening a restaurant just months before a global pandemic is not something any business owner anticipates, but Jenny and Alan are incredibly grateful for their fan-base of loyal customers. Jenny said, “We appreciate all the incredible support over this past year! By supporting us with take-out orders for food and margaritas, the restaurant was able to survive.” Customers showed up to financially support Rey Azteca, and many also used social media to leave rave reviews and offer recommendations on what to order. Their success and ability to shift their operations to take-out during the pandemic allowed them to explore and expand to their fourth location, West Goshen. It will be right down West Chester Pike, and will primarily offer quick take-out menu items. There will be a few tables in the restaurant, and though that “piece of Mexico” will not serve alcohol, it will serve the same fresh, authentic Mexican meals.

Rey Azteca’s extensive menu offers everything that’s delicious and beautiful about Mexican cuisine: a variety of flavors, colors, spices, and fresh ingredients. From sizzling skillet fajitas and burritos to tacos and salads, there’s something for everyone, even a vegetarian selection. One of their most popular dishes, Tacos de Pastor, features three tortillas filled with marinated pork and pineapple and topped with fresh cilantro and onions. This dish wouldn’t be complete without a side of refried beans and Spanish rice. But be sure to save room for Churros drizzled with chocolate and topped with whipped cream and a cherry!
If the food alone isn’t enough to convince you to grab your sombrero and head over there, the margarita menu will! Jenny and Alan agree that their signature Rey Azteca Margarita is a powerhouse and, by far, their most ordered drink on the menu. It’s a delicious blend of Patrón Reposado Tequila, Patrón Citrónge Orange and Grand Marnier. In the mood for a margarita without the extra calories? Jenny says their Skinny Jalapeño Margarita is just as delicious. Other fun options are their Coconut Blue and El Jefe margaritas. They also offer a variety of wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages.

Combine all their authentic Mexican dishes, friendly and quick service, colorful decor, outdoor dining and music, and this new “piece of Mexico” could soon become your favorite mini staycation!
The staff at Rey Azteca is excited for warmer weather and outdoor dining this spring and summer! You can enjoy lunch or dinner on their beautiful patio every day of the week. Gather some friends for a great meal and drinks while enjoying live jazz music featuring the Santucci Trio every Saturday night. Rey Azteca at 4755 West Chester Pike (near the Regal movie theater) is open Monday – Saturday 12–9pm and Sunday 12–8pm. How to Erase the Effects of “2020” from Your Face Between the stress and pressure of navigating life through the COVID -19 pandemic and the added disruption of wearing a mask on our faces for a year, our skin has aged significantly. Many people have noticed new wrinkles and fine lines that seemed to have appeared on their face overnight. Some of these first signs of aging didn't exist pre-pandemic. We now find ourselves needing to take further measures to improve the level of volume in our skin and aid in skin cell turnover. How do you turn back the clock and be ready to socialize again mask-free? First, prep your skin with the ultimate SkinWave AquaFacial, which is ideal for all skin types. This unique medical-grade treatment improves issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, oil, congested pores, acne and aging skin. SkinWave AquaFacials provide your skin with a gentle

resurfacing and rejuvenating experience without any pain during or after the procedure, which includes four easy steps: Cleansing, Exfoliating, Extracting and Hydrating. Significant skin improvement and a dazzling, even-looking skin tone is often possible with just one treatment. Around age 40, our face starts sagging and showing loss of collagen. This contributes to the appearance of wrinkles and a loss of skin elasticity like the dreaded “turkey neck.” To stimulate natural production of collagen, have a non-invasive treatment done such as VIVACE Micro Needle RF. This improves your skin’s surface imperfections and makes your skin better able to protect itself from the effects of aging. Is RF Microneedling the same as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), and is it painful? These are two names for the same safe, chemical-free process that is not painful. The radio frequency (RF) heat energy is evenly distributed across 36 sterile microneedles, which create microscopic wounds deep into the dermis that can remain exposed for 4 – 6 hours. This allows the body adequate time to produce new collagen. How many treatments will my skin require? The medical professional who will administer your VIVACE Micro Needle RF treatment can best assess your skin’s needs. For maximum results, most clients require 3 – 4 treatments done in 4-week intervals. You can expect noticeable texture improvement immediately. Results increase in the weeks after each treatment. When is the best time to schedule a treatment? Anytime you want tighter, firmer, clearer and smoother skin is a good time to begin your series of treatments. It takes 6 – 8 weeks for collagen production to begin, so if there’s a big event in your future, start your series of treatments 3 – 4 months ahead, to appreciate maximum results.

Investors Who Discover How Markets Work Own Their American Dream The foundation of the American Dream is freedom, especially the freedom to choose. This is a right that people have fought to protect. Incredibly, investors surrendered their right to choose how their money is going to be managed a long time ago, and it happened without them even noticing it. Google the word investment and thousands of results will tell you where you should invest your money. Such advice offers lots of statistics to justify why you should invest in a company’s products. In all those messages, however, there’s not one word about how markets actually work, how markets set prices, or how markets generate returns. Instead, investors are given stories about where the economy or the stock market is headed, or what a certain stock will do. Those are simply forecasts or predictions, and there’s an endless, ever-changing supply of them. They come from the media, relatives, and sometimes they’re stories investors tell themselves. Rather than being empowered by knowing what’s going to happen with their money, investors are left in a perpetual state of confusion, stress and anxiety about their future. Trying to invest without understanding how markets work is like trying to ride a bicycle without knowing how to balance it: It’s not a very pleasant experience. That all changes when investors
discover and understand how markets actually work. Those investors are empowered to freely choose exactly how their money will and will not be managed. They’ll be able to immediately know if anyone is doing something with their money that conflicts with what they want done. And they’ll be able to immediately stop such action because there’s a clear line that those investors will not allow anyone to cross. Sadly, investors who don’t understand how markets actually work hand over their life savings to people whom they don’t know and will never meet. Those investors are kept in the dark about what is happening with their money. They’re also left without any real assurance that what is being done actually works. They are gambling — not investing — their life savings, often with disastrous results for them and their families. Studies have shown that over the past 30 years, investors forfeited 50% of the returns that were available to them.* Their American Dreams are going up in smoke without any awareness as to WHY! You can stop that vicious cycle and take back ownership of your American Dream by working with an Investor Coach who can empower you by helping you discover how markets actually work. *Source: DALBAR, Inc.: 2020 Quantitative Analysis of Investor Behavior

The Pandemic’s Effect on Plumbing The pandemic has affected the plumbing industry in many ways. Before the pandemic, most people did not work from home, and most children attended school in person. The pandemic has required many people to work from home and students to attend classes remotely, using online learning platforms and apps. All this greatly increased at-home time has naturally caused more stress on the plumbing system in many homes, resulting in many more service calls to plumbing companies. Many homeowners are also reevaluating their space at home and taking on remodeling projects. The plumbing industry, just like a lot of other industries, is experiencing shortages in materials. Customers who need to replace an aging water heater, garbage disposal or other plumbing items are advised to seriously consider doing the job now, due to material shortages. Some manufacturers have advised plumbing companies that a lot of those shortages may continue throughout 2021. There also can be major delays in getting parts manufactured in other countries that were hit heavily by the pandemic.
Another area that has been affected is drain cleaning. There has been a definite uptick in “backed-up” drain calls. One of the biggest culprits for such back-ups has been “flushable” wet wipes. Only toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet, and preferably the single-ply type. Some buying trends have been sparked out of heightened germ awareness. One popular item has been the bidet toilet seat, which offers warm water cleansing, a heated seat and a nightlight. Those seats offer a self-cleaning stainless steel wand that uses UV light for automatic sanitizing. Another newly popular item is touchless faucets. In commercial applications, the shift to more hygienic and efficient touchless faucets and toilets has been occurring for a while, but now it’s also happening in homes. Many touchless faucets on the market connect directly to a home’s standard power supply, so there’s no batteries to replace, and a manual override option lets you use the faucet during a power failure. Everyone definitely hopes that things soon get back to normal. Plumbers are, as usual, doing their best to be ready when needed. NS

The Many Advantages of a Performance-Based Music Education Program Many adults, young and old, who took music lessons as a kid say they lost interest because their teacher wasn’t engaging or wasn’t working on the material they were interested in. All those same people also typically say they wished they had continued with their music studies. If they had had the opportunity to get one-on-one private instruction and also work in a group setting to put on a show every three months, it’s very likely that most of those same people who complained about their music lessons would still be playing music today.
An often-overlooked attribute of performance-based programs is that students learn self-confidence by accomplishing the goals they set for themselves. They realize that they can achieve things that they never thought possible. When you can play a guitar solo live in front of 250 people, giving a presentation in front of your History class is easy. The most important benefit of these performance-based music programs is that they dramatically accelerate the students’ learning curve. The consistent deadlines of the approaching shows, the teamwork, and positive peer pressure motivate the students to attain proficiency levels that they didn’t think possible. All things considered, performance-based music education not only offers a comprehensive path to becoming a musician, it also teaches life skills that students can use for a lifetime. NS
Rock YouR StudentS’ WoRld Because one great rock show can change the world! There are many advantages to a performance-based music education program as compared to traditional teacher-student music instruction. In performance-based programs, students not only receive a private lesson every week, they also work as a team to put on a show. They learn self-confidence, music theory and performance techniques by learning and performing actual songs instead of playing scales and exercises. And they learn stagecraft by playing real rock shows for live audiences. One of the benefits of this team-based approach is that it closely mirrors the social benefits of many team sports. The participants join a “show,” which serves as the team, and they work together towards the final goal of putting on a rock show. Because no one wants to be the person who lets the team down, they are more likely to be prepared for rehearsals. This positive peer pressure helps motivate students, and it’s a crucial success component of these programs.

Our Community by Sheila Turner-Hilliard

With warmer weather finally here, many homeowners are busy planting a wide variety of flowers, shrubs and trees to improve their home’s curb appeal. But did you know that landscaping with native plants can benefit your garden, the environment and our wildlife? What are native plants and why are they so important? Native plants are the foundation of our region’s ecosystem. Not only are they adapted to local conditions, thus requiring little to no maintenance, native plants provide nutritious seeds, berries, nectar and foliage to animals and pollinators — butterflies, moths and bees. They are also hosts to many insects that our birds rely on for food for their chicks.
You may have noticed signs on West Chester Pike that name Newtown Square an official “Bird Town” as designated by Audubon Pennsylvania. Our township is recognized as one that works to promote conservation and community-based actions, to create a healthy, more sustainable environment for birds and people. Because of the hard work of our township’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), Newtown Township received grant funding from Valley Forge Audubon Society and Audubon Pennsylvania, to create a Pop-Up Garden for residents to explore and learn how native plants are vital in supporting nature and wildlife.

The Pop-Up Garden will initially be located at the corner of Bishop Hollow Rd and Ellis Ave. From May 8–15, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the garden, learn about native plants and take home helpful information about how to create and build their own gardens. Because all the plants and trees will be in pots, the garden will then be moved to St. Albans Circle, as part of Newtown Square’s Gather in the Circle initiative. Once complete, the native plants, flowers, grasses and trees will be permanently planted around our community. This project, coordinated by EAC member Janet Krevenas, has also been partnered with Newtown Square in Bloom (www. NewtownSquareInBloom.com), to help with installing the garden in both locations. “We are always happy to teach our residents the importance of a healthy bird population,” said Janet, “and to help residents understand the importance of choosing the correct plants to make their properties more bird-friendly.” Janet explained that the goal of the EAC and Newtown Square in Bloom is to educate and encourage residents to create their own “pocket meadows” in a corner of their yard. She said that it is important to plant a three-season garden, to support our bird and pollinators and leave seeds for the winter months. If you’re looking to get a head start on your very own pocket meadow, consider native trees like American beech and holly, which attract cardinals, sparrows and chickadees. A single oak tree will support over 500 different species of caterpillars, and planting an ornamental grass like Little Bluestem will bring
butterflies, finches and wrens. If you’re looking for colorful, fragrant flowers, plant some Sweet Goldenrod and Milkweed, to give Monarch Butterflies something to lay their eggs on. Then, all through the year, enjoy the oasis you created. You can learn more about native plants for your backyard by visiting www.Audubon.org/nativeplants and entering your ZIP code. Other helpful resources can be found at www. ValleyForgeAudubon.org & www.HomeGrownNationalPark.org. NS

Historic Newtown Square Day 25th Anniversary Celebration – TAKE 2! 2! by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of the Newtown Square Historical Society
This time last year, the Newtown Square Historical Society (NSHS) was preparing to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its annual Historic Newtown Square Day. But COVID-19 forced all live events to be canceled. This year, things are starting to look up: Many have their vaccinations, we’ve all learned to “mask up” and social distance, and we’re getting reacquainted with the world around us. With that in mind, NSHS is hosting its first live event in over a year: The 25th Annual Historic Newtown Square Day Saturday, June 5, 2021: Our public sites will offer tours from 10am– 4pm. Come out and visit the buildings that started serving Newtown residents over 200 years ago: the 1711 Newtown Square Friends Meeting, the 1742 Square Tavern, the 1828 Paper Mill House & Museum, the 1841 Hood Octagonal School, the 1860 Bartram Bridge, the Garrett Williamson silo and barn, and the 1895 Newtown Square Railroad Museum.

Benjamin West, “Father of American Painting”: Benjamin West (portrayed by local artist Terry Jones) will be “in residence” at the Square Tavern on Saturday, working on his OUTDOOR POWER latest painting, “William Penn’s Treaty with the Indians.” He’llEQUIPMENT & REPAIRS also talk about his boyhood (his father was Proprietor of The Square Tavern) and his development as a painter. Terry Jones has proposed sculpting a life-sized statue of young Benjamin West, to symbolically bring Benjamin West back to his boyhood home of Newtown Square. Fundraising for the life-sized statue will kick off at this event. Be sure to stop in and see the scale version of the statue Terry has proposed, and watch the master at work.

Time to Celebrate!:
Family Fun this Month at NELL & NSPL by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Last spring’s lockdown definitely put a damper on celebrating the start of our youth softball and baseball seasons. Important milestones were missed, and our fun, festive team parades up Bishop Hollow Rd were canceled. Although we were able to salvage a small part of the season, the sounds of cracking bats, cheering fans and children playing were sorely missed. The good news is that this spring is looking so much brighter! 2020 marked Newtown Square Petticoat League’s (NSPL) 50th anniversary. What started as a piece of farmland back in 1970 has transformed, with the hard work of dedicated volunteers, into four beautifully manicured softball fields. Troop Farm, as we know it today, has grown quite a bit over the years, and is now home to 456 girls on recreational softball teams along with six Rebels travel teams and over 100 coaches. NSPL will finally be able to celebrate their 50th Anniversary over the course of a weekend, with an All-Star Game on Friday night

Now, let’s head across the street to find out what’s happening at NELL (Newtown Edgmont Little League). Last month, we told you all about the renovations to the complex. With most of the work complete, it’s time to celebrate with fun for the whole family. On Saturday, May 22nd (rain date Sunday May 23rd), players, families and friends will gather for NELL Day. It’s a day-long event featuring raffles for cash and prizes, games and activities for all ages, themed gift baskets and a silent auction. Some gift basket prizes include sports memorabilia and game tickets, home and garden decor, spa treatment packages, gift cards galore and more.

wrap up Sunday with a Skills Competition throughout the different divisions. NSPL Board Member Kelly DeLong can’t wait to celebrate. “We will be bringing back some veteran NSPL players to throw out first pitches,” she said. “A lot of work went into planning last year. and we’re excited to finally be able to make it happen!” Be sure to check out their website www.NSPLSoftball.com and like their Facebook page @NSPL for a more detailed schedule closer to the May 14th weekend.
“We are excited for an incredibly fun and eventful day and welcome families to this year’s 2021 baseball season,” says Daren Grande, President of Newtown Edgmont Little League. “Families will be able to watch baseball all day, spend time doing activities they love with the whole family, and also have the chance to win special prizes throughout the day. We are looking forward to having you join us this year and plan to keep it safe for all of our families.” NELL Day runs from 10am–5pm. Every team in the league will play that day, and there will be a Home Run Derby and several All-Star Games to finish the day. As an Essential Business We’re OPEN & AVAILABLE!

How to Prepare for Your Construction or Renovation Project With mortgage rates being so low and the housing market booming lately, many homeowners are deciding to modify their current home rather than move to another home. This decision can be very overwhelming for a homeowner who does not know how to prepare to take on a renovation. Here’s some advice to help make your renovation projects stress-free.
Give Your Hom
a Beautiful New Look!
e
It’s quite common for a contractor to meet with homeowners about a possible renovation or construction project only to discover that the homeowners don’t know exactly what results they’re hoping for. They may have a vision but they’re not sure if that vision can become a reality in their current home. So, at your initial meeting with a contractor, describe your vision and expectations as specifically as possible. And have ready as much information as possible so they can advise what can and cannot be done. After your initial meeting with a contractor, you should always contact an architect, to have them draw up plans. This will save you time and money because the contractor cannot give you an accurate estimate on his first visit unless he has plans and the proper information. If you’re considering putting an addition on your home, be aware that some additions are not possible due to property lines or impervious surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, brick, stone and rooftops. Be prepared to go to your local municipality’s Building Permits Department, to make sure what you’re thinking of doing can be done. If you skip that step, you may soon find you’re spinning your wheels! While you’re at that office, ask about the prospective contractor you’re considering hiring. The township can give you some insight about the contractor’s past work and reputation. Ask if your prospective contractor is licensed in that township. Do your due diligence before you spend a lot of money on a home construction or renovation project! You should make sure you have the right person for the job. Remember: Price isn’t everything. Your “gut feeling” often provides a good indication that you’re making a wise decision. Also ask the contractor you’re thinking of selecting for references from clients who used the contractor for a project that’s similar to yours. NS

Bring Spring Inside Your Home’s Bathrooms Nature’s renewal outdoors at this time of year often gets us wanting to also do some renewals inside our home. It feels good to exchange the heavy drapes that kept out winter drafts for thin window treatments that let in spring’s sunny days and fresh breezes. Free air and light outside each day not only help reduce energy costs, they’re good for your mind, body and mood. If you’re looking to bring more sunshine inside, your home’s bathrooms should be on your consideration list.
they especially like how frameless shower doors greatly reduce or eliminate the need to remove mildew and mold, which are so typical with shower curtains and liners.
One way to lighten up your shower or tub is to replace your traditional shower curtain and its waterproof liner with frameless shower doors. In addition to that aesthetic improvement, it’s a way to give your bathroom a modern and streamlined look. Removing the shower curtain and liner allows more light into the shower/tub area. Frameless or framed shower doors will also save energy by reducing drafts and chills.
Another way to bring more light into your bathroom is by adding mirrors, especially custom-made mirrors designed to make the most of the size and shape of your bathroom. Mirrors in a bathroom create two great results: They reflect natural and artificial light, and they also create the illusion that your bathroom is larger than its actual size.
Just as clothing trends change every year, interior home design trends don’t stay the same for very long. When checking what’s trending for bathrooms this year, many homeowners report that they’ve decided to change out their tub and shower combo for a larger enclosed shower with frameless doors. They like how those doors stop water from pooling because gone are the nooks and crannies where water used to collect. And Ask about OUR NEW Cleaning & Surface Protection!
For the many homeowners who still want to have a tub, frameless and framed shower doors can be installed above the tub. This makes bathing still enjoyable, and water can no longer splash out onto the floor because the tub/shower is now enclosed.
As you consider interior design changes, consider trends, of course, but always choose what best matches your family’s lifestyle and what’s possible based on your home’s current or potential design and your budget for making changes. The good news is that any size budget can usually afford some changes that will feel and look new, bright and beautiful for a long time! NS
