are 2022 New tow n Squ of The Year! Friend & Neighbor
June’s longer days are our sign that the Summer of 2022 is here — perhaps the best summer in several years! — so be sure to Make Summer Fun Again! We’ll do it with each new issue, by Bringing People Together in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. And at this halfway point of 2022, we take this June issue to once again honor a Newtown Township resident as our 2022 Newtown Square Friend & Neighbor of The Year. This year, we honor Daren Grande. If you don’t know Daren Grande but do know a boy or girl who has played Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL) baseball over the last 10 years, they and their parents know Mr. Grande as “Coach Grande” and as that guy who seems to always be at Jack Daly Baseball Complex with other volunteers whose dedication makes the seven NELL baseball diamonds and indoor Flanigan Center fieldhouse the jewel of Newtown Township parks. Daren Grande is a tireless volunteer whose contribution to youth in our hometown is deserving of our recognition. And that is why we recognize Daren Grande this month as our 2022 Newtown Square Friend & Neighbor of The Year. (Read why on page 6.) With our magazine arriving in homes after the 4th of the month, I’ll take this opportunity in June, to remind everyone to plan on attending the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade. Plan ahead to come out to cheer the colorful floats, marching bands and children decorating bikes to win honors on the day we all celebrate our nation’s founding and American freedoms on Monday July 4th. Come early to get a good spot for your chair, facing the westbound lanes of West Chester Pike, so you can also cheer the runners in the Broomall Rotary’s Firecracker 5K Run/Walk, which uses the same parade route, beginning at 9:15am, with the parade starting at St. Albans Circle in Newtown Square after the 5K ends around 10am. Congratulations again, Daren Grande, our 2022 Newtown Square Friend & Neighbor of The Year. For those interested in reading about our 2022 Marple Friend & Neighbor of The Year, visit the website of our sister publication mailed monthly to Marple residents and also online at www.MarpleMag.com.
Bob Blaisse Publisher
Dear Residents, School’s out for summer and it’s time for fun in the sun! Just don’t forget your shades because our calendar of events is looking bright! Grab your lawn chairs and your flags — it’s time to celebrate our independence at the Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade! And speaking of celebrations, please join us in recognizing Daren Grande as our 2022 Newtown Square Friend & Neighbor of the Year! For the past nine years, Daren has poured his time, talent and energy into serving as President of Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL). We have two Business Profile features for you this month. The first is Stars & Stripes Tactical, located in nearby East Goshen. Owner Shawn Brown and his friendly team of firearm experts are committed to providing excellent customer service focused on your specific needs. Next up is R.F. Daren Grande:
2022 Newtown Square Friend & Neighbor of The Year! by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos by Crissy Everhart Photography www.CrissyEverhart.com
Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is proud to feature families, groups and individuals who make a difference in our community. This month, we turn our attention to Daren Grande, a dedicated husband, father and volunteer who has been serving as President of Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL) for almost a decade. We are excited to honor Daren as our 2022 Newtown Square Friend & Neighbor of the Year! Daren grew up in Broomall with his parents, his brother and three sisters. He went to Russell Elementary School, Paxon Hollow Middle School and graduated from Marple Newtown High School. “I loved growing up here,” Daren said. “It was — and still is! — a great place to raise a family.” He played baseball for South Marple Little League and then soccer and football at Paxon Hollow and Marple Newtown. Daren went on to earn his degree in Criminal Justice from Kutztown University, where he also minored in Fine Arts. “I really loved all of the diverse courses I was able to take at Kutztown,” Daren explained. “By minoring in Fine Arts, I had the opportunity to design and create projects working with different mediums and methods like ceramics, woodworking, welding and paint.” After graduation, Daren moved back to our area. “There really was no doubt that I wanted to come back," he said. “My parents still live in Broomall, and three of my four siblings live nearby.” Shortly after he returned, Daren met his future wife, Alicia. “Alicia was friends with my college roommate’s sister,” Daren explained. “We were introduced one night while we were all out

in Ardmore. We began dating, got married a few years later, and will celebrate our 23rd wedding anniversary this September.” Daren recalls that when he and Alicia were first settling down, her father was instrumental in the home they chose to buy. “We were looking at a house near the Newtown Township Building, and there was some open space that backed up to the yard,” Daren said. “The township had placed a bench there, and it overlooked one of the baseball fields. My father-in-law looked at me and said, ‘One of these days, you’re going to be able to sit on this bench and watch your kids play ball.’” His words sealed the deal, and Daren and Alicia signed the papers. As the couple began their married life together, Daren began working for his father-in-law’s construction company. “I helped build homes in the area,” Daren said. “I was involved in the entire process from start to finish and was able to put to work a lot of the skills I learned in college.” Daren does admit that he’s pretty handy but would appreciate it if we didn’t mention that to Alicia! These days, Daren is the National Sales Manager for Evenlite Inc., which provides emergency lighting and egress solutions for commercial clients. “I manage 38 sales representatives throughout the United States and Puerto Rico,” he explained. “We design and install custom products for sports stadiums, concert halls, museums and corporate complexes.” When Daren’s not traveling to meet with his sales reps and clients, he spends his time working from Everlite’s offices in Berwyn and Trevose. “And as my wife and kids will attest, when I’m not at work, I’m at NELL.”
Daren and Alicia have three children: Gavin, Ty and Brooklyn. Gavin just finished his sophomore year at Kutztown University. This fall, Ty will be a senior at Malvern Prep, and Brooklyn will be entering 8th grade at St. Anastasia School. Just as Alicia’s father had predicted, that bench became a spot for Daren to watch his kids play baseball. Gavin and Ty played at NELL from tee ball through the majors, and Brooklyn played tee ball for a few years before shifting her focus to field hockey. “Even as I was growing up, NELL was known as the best place to play baseball,” Daren said. “Having my kids play there was really exciting, so I signed on to volunteer the first chance I got.”
Active board members (L to R): Ashee Bhan, Chuck Juliano, Daren Grande, Mike Schaffer and Mike McCalla
Daren began coaching at NELL and helped maintain the fields and indoor facility. A few years later, Daren sharing a special moment he joined the Board of Directors and took on with CJ Cunningham more responsibility. Then in 2013, the President of the Board, Tom Coughlan, retired, and Daren was elected to fill Tom’s position. Board member, Mike McCalla said that Daren is a hands-on leader. “If there is some- “I may be the President of the Board, but I do not do this thing that needs to be done, he is the first one to roll up his alone,” Daren commented. “Aside from our dedicated Board sleeves. NELL is fortunate to have him.” Today, NELL has 20 members, we have a strong network of parent volunteers who Board members, all of whom Daren says are committed to help with field maintenance, building renovations, snack bar upholding the high standards set by Board members who management and special event coordination.” Daren said it takes a total team effort by the Board, the volunteers and his served before them. family. “I have to give my wife and kids credit here, too,” Daren said. “I spend a lot of time at NELL, but they know and understand just how special this organization is to me.” Visitors who come to NELL are always amazed by this sports complex, which offers a memorable experience for players and families. It’s an impressive layout of eight meticulously maintained fields, six outdoor batting cages, a 15,000 square-foot indoor facility, a snack bar that rivals area restaurants, and plenty of on-site parking. Aside from the impressive list of amenities, Daren said that much more is still on the horizon. “Since 2021, we have been undergoing a major and much-needed renovation,” he said. “We have a new snack bar and new bathrooms, and players love the new dugouts and field improvements!” Such improvements included a complete overhaul of Field 1 with new OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT & REPAIRS fencing, scoreboard, backstop and renovations to the Peterson Building that sits behind home plate.

Daren shared more exciting news. “For the first time since 1996, NELL has been chosen to host the 2023 Pennsylvania State Tournament!” he said. “So, these renovations are happening
at the perfect time.” The tournament, for 11- and 12-year-old players, will bring the top eight teams in the state to NELL. The winning team will then advance to the Mid-Atlantic region tournament where they will play for the opportunity to go to the Little League World Series. These exciting renovations come at a price of course. Because NELL is a volunteer-directed 501(c)(3) nonprofit, they rely heavily on volunteers and funding from the community. One of the fundraising initiatives is NELL’s Green Picket Fence campaign: Families can purchase a personalized engraved placard that will be affixed to the new composite fence surrounding Field 1. “I am always amazed at the generosity of NELL families,” said Daren. “But NELL’s corporate and private Sponsors, as well as Township officials, consistently step up to the plate, too.” (Pun intended!) On Saturday May 14th, players, families and friends gathered for the annual NELL Day. It was a day-long fundraising event featuring raffles for cash and prizes, games and activities for all ages, themed gift baskets and a silent auction. Some gift basket prizes included sports memorabilia and game tickets, home and garden decor, spa treatment packages and gift cards galore.

“We hosted an incredibly fun and eventful day, and welcomed families to our 2022 Baseball season,” Daren said. “Families were able to watch baseball all day, spend time doing activities they love with the whole family, and also had the chance to win special prizes throughout the day. Every team in the league played that day, and there was a Home Run Derby and several All-Star Games to finish out the event.” Running and managing the area’s premier little league is no easy task. It carries a lot of responsibility and requires a lot of time, dedication and consideration for upholding NELL’s impressive legacy. It’s a job that Daren does exceptionally well. “I love what I do and am honored to serve as NELL’s President of the Board.” Thank you, Daren, for giving so much of your time and talents to the Newtown Edgmont Little League and for being the perfect example of our mission of Bringing People Together.

Student of the Month by Lisa Jeffries
Eoghan Waychunas JUNE STUDENT OF THE MONTH Eoghan Waychunas, June Student of the Month Photo courtesy of Joan Waychunas
The June Student of the Month is Eoghan Waychunas, an 8th-grader at St. Anastasia School. Eoghan received a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of Excellence in Service to his school, his peers and the community. Eoghan is an avid sportsman, taking part in St. Annie’s Varsity Football, Basketball and Track & Field teams. In fact, Eoghan’s Varsity football team, the Spartans, won the CYO Championships this past season. Even when he’s not at one of his games or meets, you can usually find him in the yard or down the street, throwing around a football or playing basketball with his dad or his friends. Eoghan really enjoys school and particularly loves science and math. He has aspirations to become an Engineer when he’s older. For now, he’s really looking forward to attending 9th grade at Marple Newtown High School in the fall. Besides the incredible reputation and opportunities available at MNHS, it couldn’t be in a more convenient location: the school is literally across the street from his home.
Recently, the always-enterprising Eoghan started his first job as a Caddy at the Overbrook Country Club. His parents couldn’t be more proud of him but not just for accomplishments: Eoghan is also a truly spiritual young man with a caring soul. Often seen riding his bike in the neighborhood, he has been found to pedal up to the small chapel at St. Annie’s, just to chat with God. He’s also always been a tremendous help to his neighbors, whether they need their sidewalk cleared of snow or help with other miscellaneous yard work. Eoghan has a kind heart, as seen in his outreach at school as part of the Prayer Partners group, where the upper grades help out with the younger kids, whether it’s help in school, with prayer or even just walking home from school. Eoghan, your Marple Newtown Friends & Neighbors congratulate you on winning this well-deserved award, and for always being there to help others. We wish you well in high school, and may you accomplish all your hopes, dreams and goals! NS

Garden and Landscape Design Garden and landscape design combines the art and science of plants, sustainable practices and collaborative design, to create one-of-a-kind garden spaces. Whether you’re looking for an innovative layout for acreage, sustainable vegetable gardens or a small rooftop getaway, this is a great time to create your perfect garden fantasy. Whether your taste leans toward a beautiful garden full of variety and color, or you prefer a low-maintenance style, there are few limits to what your landscape design can bring to your home, within the given space. Landscape lighting is also a great feature that can help enhance the beauty of your outside spaces and planted beds! Combine this with a stunning water feature, and you’ve got that professional landscape look you admired on TV or in a magazine. Choosing the right plants and design can bring life to virtually any landscape. Do your research because there are so many varieties and sizes of plants to choose from, many of which offer practical options to suit your needs. Perennial designs are intended to foster long-term growth while incorporating the pre-existing characteristics of your property. Annual plantings change with the seasons and can be a great way to add color to your landscape year round. Whether you want to draw attention to the unique architectural features of your home, extend your outdoor living space long after the sun goes down, or simply provide some added

security to your home, landscape lighting design can change the entire appearance and curb appeal of your home and property. Proper design and installation will assure that your plants will be an investment that grows. Ponds, waterfalls and integrated fountains add visual interest to your property, combined with the soothing sounds of a water feature. A man-made pond with a concrete base is easier to maintain than you might think. Ponds can be used as a standalone water feature, or they can act as a reservoir for a fountain or waterfall. This gives the pond functional as well as aesthetic appeal. In nature, waterfalls are prized for their beauty as well as their power. So it’s no wonder that they are increasingly popular with homeowners who are looking to upgrade or install a new landscape concept. Modern-day materials and installation techniques also make it easier and more affordable than ever for you to have a creative waterfall right in the comfort of your own backyard. NS

Design From the Floor Up Most homeowners enjoy watching fixer-upper type home makeover shows from time to time. One of the most crucial times to read, watch and click on every bit of information you can find on your particular makeover project is when you are at the beginning. So, where do you go when you’re starting from scratch with a new room or a whole house? Designers often say it’s best to design from the floor up, which means to select the floor first, and then work on the rest to coordinate and unify. For most homeowners’ needs, there are five basic categories of floor coverings to consider. Area Rugs: When considering the use of area rugs, think of the floor as the canvas, and the area rugs are the art. Layering is one of the hottest trends right now. Even if you already have flooring, such as hardwood or wall-to-wall carpeting, a scatter rug or runner will highlight, accent and add design interest.
Luxury Vinyl: The next decade of interior decor trends is expected to usher in styles that encourage bold and creative ideas as well as happiness and wellness at home. The past few years have been all about a clean, almost sterile look filled with whites and grays. But trends are moving toward a decade filled with bold personality. All of this means that luxury vinyl flooring is often the perfect choice to reflect who you are.
Carpet: When choosing floor coverings for some bedrooms and other upstairs rooms, carpet makes a room feel finished and comfortable. There are many choices when it comes to carpet so you should be able to find the exact fit and look you want. From the color, the look, the fiber type and pattern, the look you want can be targeted to the exact carpet you need.
Hardwood: No matter what your favorite top design trend is, you can find a hardwood flooring to suit your taste perfectly. With natural characteristics, knots and grains, along with the new wider, longer plank formats hardwoods will continue to provide maximum wood appeal. The cool natural color palette of soft white, beige and gray will enhance modern room scenes across the board. Ultra-matte finishes with light brushing will bring out the character that everyone craves.
Laminate: While adapting to changing circumstances recently, living spaces have taken on new functions and purposes. Work, school, play and life are now converging at home more than ever before. You need a floor that’s durable enough to handle your new lifestyle but beautiful enough to be something you like looking at all day such as the newest generation of laminated wood flooring.

Do You Have Some Questions After Filing Your Tax Return? Now that taxpayers have filed their tax returns, here are three questions accountants frequently get asked, along with answers to those questions. I’m running out of storage. When can I dispose of my old tax files? Here is the general rule: You should keep tax records as long as they can be audited by the IRS as provided by the statute of limitations, which is generally three years after you file your return. This typically means you can dispose of most of your tax records (but perhaps not all; see below) from 2018 and prior. But if you filed an extension for 2018, you need to hold onto your tax records until at least three years from the date you filed the extended return. However, if your gross income was understated by more than 25%, the statute of limitations increases to six years. Finally, there is no statute of limitations if you did not file a return or if you filed a fraudulent return. Certain tax-related records should be retained longer. For example: • Tax returns should be retained indefinitely, to prove how and what you filed.
• W-2 Forms should be retained until you receive Social Security, to prove your work record and earnings by year. • Records relating to real estate and investments should be maintained for at least three years after you report their sale on your return, to prove purchase price, cost of additions and improvements, depreciation, etc. • Retirement account records should be maintained until three years after the account is depleted and the last withdrawal was reported on your return. My return was filed weeks ago but I have not received the refund. How do I check the status of my refund? The IRS has an online tool that tells you the status of your refund. Go to www.IRS.gov and click on Get Your Refund Status. You’ll need to enter your Social Security number, filing status and the exact amount of the refund you’re expecting. After my return was filed, I found some additional tax deductions. What can I do now? You can file an amended return and claim a refund. Bringing People Together in newtown square and beyond “It’s the mail event of the month.” That’s how one reader described how she feels when the new monthly issue of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors arrives in her mail. And why not? Most readers tell me they love to see if they know the family on the cover of our latest issue of Newtown Square’s hometown magazine, in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. When friends and relatives of Newtown Square homeowners visit and find our hometown magazine on a countertop or coffee table, it often leads to a call or email request to be added to our magazine mailing list, or to ask how another hometown could begin having a similar magazine to serve up hometown pride. The compliments are great, but those calls and emails

always make me wonder if I can do more for a wider community, to be Bringing People Together through our unique brand of social media in print. Our publishing company, Best Version Media, publishes over a thousand hometown magazines similar to our Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine, several serving other nearby communities in Delaware County including Marple, Springfield, Middletown, Garnet Valley and Chadds Ford. Are more coming? I can’t say right now, but you can expect news in the coming months. Our advertising Sponsors also agree that where other advertising tries, we succeed in Bringing People Together. And not just friends and neighbors within a community, but also residents with their local business owners, which depend on each other, maybe not as much for neighborly friendship, and more so for products and services a community needs. Every community needs products and services to flourish. The presence of local businesses reflects a community's standard of living, along with the community’s real estate values, which funds public school budgets used to educate local children. Local businesses only remain when local residents use their buying power to buy locally, from local businesses who are recognized as those who give back to the community. That’s where hometown pride intersects with hometown loyalty, awarded to the advertising Sponsors of our magazine.
You Have The PLANS… We Have The PLANTS!
If you enjoy Newtown Square’s hometown magazine, recognize it is the monthly gift from our trusted advertising Sponsors seen on these pages. They deserve our expressed loyalty in return by our choice to do business with them first whenever possible, in gratitude for their support of Newtown Square residents by choosing to use their advertising budgets on us, which makes our hometown magazine possible.

By their choice to advertise in our community, they are telling us that Newtown Square is a great place to live and do business, and how important we are to the success of their business.

They take pride in servicing both their residential and commercial customers’ needs with superior service at a great value. Rich Bondurant, Sr, and his son, Rick, take great pride in the success and reputation of their family business. “My father started the business in 1980, and I grew up watching and learning from him,” said Rick. “He has since taken a step back, and now I run the daily operations of the business.” Rick said that what separates them from the competition is their personal approach. They are easy to get in touch with, whether it’s to handle emergencies, answer questions or to give advice and guidance. And it’s not just Rick and his dad who are committed to delivering that level of personal service. Their team of highly skilled and licensed technicians know the importance of quality customer care. “Putting your family name on a business carries an extra level of responsibility and trust,” Rick explained. “Many of the technicians on our team have been with us for a long time, and we feel confident that our technicians represent our company very well,” he added.

from heavy rain or broken pipes. If you have a sump pump, it’s important to have it inspected and tested by a professional on a regular basis. And if you need one installed, hire the team who can advise you on placement, install the system and help you properly maintain it. If healthy, clean, better-tasting water is what you’re looking for, then call in the Bondurant team to install a whole-house water filter. It can remove up to 97% of the chlorine in regular tap water. A whole-house water filter also reduces harmful water contaminants such as salt, soil, solvents, pesticides and rust. Plumbing is, of course, the foundation of any bathroom and kitchen project. Their fully licensed master plumbers have the expertise to completely renovate your kitchen or bathroom to include new fixtures, appliances and other features, to create a space that is both functional and beautiful while also adding to the value of your home. “Although we’re a small company, we offer a wide variety of services and produce big results for our customers,” Rick said. “Our best advertising resource — and most of our business — comes from word of mouth by our satisfied customers.”

Homeowners whose sewer pipes get clogged can experience big problems such as flooding and contamination. Those sewer pipe problems are often caused by tree roots, debris, corrosion and leaking joints. R.F. Bondurant Plumbing & Heating technicians will perform a video camera sewer line inspection to locate problems and make all necessary repairs. A properly functioning sump pump in your home or business can make a huge difference if you experience flooding

History Spotlight
The Rhoads of Ashley Farm by Doug Humes Photos courtesy of Newtown Square Historical Society
The Rhoads family in Marple is well known for starting and operating the oldest business enterprise in the country — a tannery — for close to 300 years. A branch of the family sprouted in Newtown in 1790 when Joseph Rhoads bought a 192-acre parcel and built a house for his family. His son William Rhoads Sr. married Anna Pancoast Levis in 1822, and he began building her a beautiful new home on the site, using timber harvested on the farm property. In 1825, they moved in to a three-story home with three chimneys, four 3rd-floor gables and a large front porch, descending to a circular driveway leading to the West Chester Road. A large home, it had to be to accommodate the two sons and five daughters born there. It is said that each time a daughter was born, the parents planted an ash tree. The ash trees then multiplied on the property, leading them to call it the Ashley farm.

The beautiful Rhoad farmhouse, named “Ashley”
Like many local farmers, William Rhoads’ trip to the Philadelphia markets had to pass along the unpaved West Chester Road. Travel in that day was dusty and dirty William Rhoads, Sr., who built the Ashley home
in hot weather, muddy in wet weather, and rutted and frozen in winter. Like the potholes of today, the ruts could threaten the wooden wheels and axles of the farm wagons of the day. Rhoads took on the problem, gathering support and raising money to fund the Philadelphia and West Chester Turnpike Company, to build a plank road turnpike between the two places in 1848. He served as president of the Company from its inception until his death in 1863. William Jr. lived on at the Ashley farmhouse, with his mother. He stepped into his father’s shoes as president of the Turnpike Company and continued the farm until 1887, when he sold the property to the Pennsylvania Hospital. He continued to live in the old house as the manager and superintendent of the farm until his death there in 1903. The grand old house lived on, in the operation of the Hospital farm, and then as the Dowden Convalescent Home from 1948 until 1989. Needing new and modern space, Dowden demolished the old house to build a modern nursing home that opened in 1990. Dowden closed in 2000, and the building was later renovated and now houses the Brynchester apartments.
1848 map showing Ashley farm on the north side of the West Chester Turnpike. The school across the street is the Octagonal School, built in 1842.
The only remaining signs of the Rhoads? An old springhouse, perhaps some ash trees, and Rhoads Avenue. When you’re in the market to buy or sell a firearm, it’s best to seek the advice and guidance of experts. Fortunately for us, the experts at Stars & Stripes Tactical are just a short drive away, on West Chester Pike. Shawn Brown has owned Stars & Stripes Tactical since 2015. Originally from New York State, Shawn’s path to business ownership had a few turns. He earned his college degree in offset lithography and spent much of his career in the printing business. He then turned to kitchen and bath design when the housing market was healthy. When the economy took a downward turn in 2008, Shawn decided he would begin his journey towards achieving his American Dream. “I have always been involved in the shooting sports industry,” said Shawn. “So I decided it was time to turn what I loved to do into a business.” Shawn moved from upstate New York to Downingtown and opened his shop in nearby East Goshen. Stars & Stripes Tactical is not just a place to buy and sell guns. They carry a wide selection of ammunition, optics like lasers and scopes, gun safes and locks, cleaning supplies and tactical gear. “We provide our customers with excellent customer service and can help with the entire process,” Shawn said.

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors June 2022
“We welcome the opportunity to help people select the right equipment to meet their specific needs.” Shawn and his staff of experts take great pride in educating novice customers on everything from the best type of firearm to how to properly clean and safely store their purchases. “We have a lot of customers who participate in outdoor Trap Shooting, in which clay targets are launched into the air from an automated thrower,” Shawn explained. “When a beginner comes in to purchase their shotgun, we not only educate them in the shop, but we offer to take them to West Chester Gun Club where they can practice and get comfortable with their new equipment.”
And the NSSF shows how to do just that, through its resources available to firearm owners in its safety videos such as “Introduction to Range Safety and Etiquette,” printed resources such as “Firearms Responsibility in the Home,” and the infographic “Safe Storage Options for Your Lifestyle,” all available at the NSSF website: www. NSSF.org. “For anyone who has owned and handled guns safely for years, we must always be mindful of the youngest among us who do not yet understand proper storage and handling of firearms,” said Shawn. “It’s our responsibility to teach and always practice gun safety techniques all year long,” he added. His customers must commit to storing their firearms responsibly, which means not storing or hiding them in closets, drawers or under a car seat. “Firearms should be stored in a locked safe, gun vault or storage case that must not be accessible to children,” advised Shawn. He also stated that gun-locking devices, which make firearms inoperable, should be used in addition to locked storage of disassembled firearm parts, and ammunition must always be stored in a locked location separate from firearms. For more information about Stars & Stripes Tactical, contact our federally licensed firearms safety advocate and hometown magazine Sponsor, Shawn Brown, at 610-556-0223, or visit Shawn’s store located at 1313 West Chester Pike in East Goshen and his website at www.StarsNStripesTactical.com. NS
(L - R) Firearm experts Connor McGonigle and Shawn Brown
Stars & Stripes Tactical is also the premier shop for gun enthusiasts, collectors and expert shooters. “We carry an extensive inventory of guns and supplies in the store. But if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we will get it for you,” said Shawn. They also handle gun transfers, perform background checks and offer discounts for veterans and first responders. They also regularly donate to the West Goshen Police Department and the Veterans Foreign Legion. Shawn said that customers who visit the shop will have an experience unlike what the large retailers provide. “We are the friendly firearm professionals who are focused on education and safety,” he explained. “We know that purchasing a gun can be overwhelming and intimidating, and we are here to ease those fears.” Shawn and his staff treat everyone who walks in the door with the same level of respect and courtesy, whether it’s their first time in or they’ve been coming there for years. June happens to be National Firearm Safety Month, which Shawn says is a good time for all firearm owners to recommit to year-round education, following the call of the National Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF) to “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.”

Showing Appreciation This Father’s Day! by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Although we should show our appreciation to our dads every day, Father’s Day is a day dedicated to celebrating the impact fathers have had on our lives. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father, who was a widower raising Sonora and her six siblings. Sonora worked hard to gain support for this new tradition, but it was not until decades later that Father’s Day would be recognized as a national holiday. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. This year Father's Day falls on Sunday, June 19th. Even if you’ve already bought or made a card and gift, spending some quality time with your dad, stepdad, grandfather or special father figure in your life is priceless. Here are a few ideas that both adults and kids can enjoy.
Play Backyard Games Tap into your dad’s competitive side by spending time in your backyard with games like badminton, cornhole or horseshoes. Backyard games are also a great way to burn calories if you’ll be hosting a big Father’s Day cookout. Trace Your Family’s Roots Even if you think you know everything about your dad, there’s so much more to his story! Whether it’s looking through old photo albums or other memorabilia, ask your dad to trace your family tree, to get a deeper look at your family’s history. Book a Father’s Day Lunch or Dinner If you don’t feel like cooking, make reservations at a fun restaurant in town. Casey’s Public House in Newtown Square is a great place to share some delicious wings or order up some burgers. For breakfast or dessert, Weinrich’s Bakery always has a wide variety of scrumptious donuts or other desserts to satisfy a sweet tooth.
Make Your Yard a Joy to Come Home to! Light up your Home Entrances, Steps, Walkways, Patios, and other Outdoor Areas For Evening and Nighttime Entertaining or just relaxing with the family. How to Write the Perfect Obituary An obituary is a vital part of a funeral service. It lets people know about someone’s passing and provides information about an upcoming service. It’s also a chance to learn more about the deceased. When writing an obituary for a loved one, here are five essential elements to include. Announcement of Death Begin with the announcement of the person’s death, using language that you and your family are comfortable with. Then mention the day your loved one passed away, their age, and the location of their residence at the time of their death. Some people feel that using the word “died” is important. Others may instead prefer words like “passed away” or “after a long battle with….” You and your family can choose whether to include the circumstances around the death itself.
Family The next section of an obituary should mention the surviving family members, who are the people others can offer condolences and assistance to during this difficult time. Survivors should be listed in order of closest relation to the deceased: spouse, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, parents and siblings. The first names of relatives should always be included as well as a spouse's name in parentheses and then their last name. Most obituaries do not include the names of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins unless they were especially close to the deceased. Biography The biography is typically the longest and most personal part. It’s where you highlight your deceased loved one’s lifetime

accomplishments such as their education, their career highlights and other proud achievements such as having worked with a charity or community organization. It’s more important to focus on the qualities of the deceased and their relationships than on every accomplishment. Talking about the impact your loved one had on others will make for a very meaningful obituary. Funeral or Memorial Service Toward the end of the obituary is where you should include information about the upcoming service for your loved one. A funeral director can add this to the obituary after the details have been confirmed. Include the date and time of service, location and the officiant’s name. If there will be a separate visitation, include that information as well.

Donations or Special Messages Many people like to close the obituary with a special message such as a prayer or a special thanks. Some families wish to forego flowers and instead ask for donations to a cause or charity that was special to the deceased. The key to a memorable and interesting obituary is to start with the facts, then speak from the heart. Like a funeral, the obituary should express the grief of your family’s loss and also share parts of your loved one’s life that not everyone may be aware of. NS

Here in Marple Newtown, a Fourth of July celebration would not be complete without our annual parade of fantastic bands, decorated floats, first responders and much more. It’s the perfect way to kick off the holiday and celebrate our freedom! On Monday July 4th, grab your lawn chairs and flags and find a good seat along the parade route. The parade starts at St Albans Circle and continues eastbound on West Chester Pike to the Broomall Fire Company. For individuals sensitive to loud sounds, there will be a quiet zone, where sirens and blowing air sounds are prohibited, that will stretch a short distance along West Chester Pike from Evergreen Ave to Ann Rd in Broomall. “We want as many people as possible to enjoy the parade,” said Jan Ceton, Chairman of the Parade committee. Also back by popular demand are the Whoa Phat Brass Band and the Marching Cobras Drumline from Harlem who performed last year to rave reviews. Mary Jo Hamilton is the committee’s band coordinator and is excited to welcome back popular bands as well as add some new ones. Be on the lookout for the Bushwackers Drum and Bugle Corps, an all-age drum corps, and the Spirit of Slim ‘76. “It’s really fun to find new bands who want to come play in our hometown,” said Mary Jo. “And on the day of the parade, it’s so fun to see how it all comes together.” Jan said that he received a lot of positive feedback from the community in 2021 about the musical additions. “Many people told me it was the best parade yet!” he added. “We’re happy to be bringing back these bands that so many spectators enjoyed.” Aside from the musical entertainment, the parade is a great opportunity for local clubs and individuals to show off

their creativity with decorated floats and costumes. Merrie Staurowsky, Parade Committee Vice Chair said that every year she is amazed by the creativity. “Some of these floats, especially the hand-drawn ones, really knock your socks off!” Speaking of creativity, for the third year in a row the committee is sponsoring the Red, White and You! contest. What started as a way to unite the communities during the COVID-19 pandemic has become a fun tradition for residents and businesses to show off their patriotic spirit. Last year the committee received more than 50 entries and gave out awards for categories like “Most Patriotic” and “Best Balcony.” This year, entries can be received up until June 27th and judging will begin on June 29th.

The Marple Newtown Fourth of July Parade and Red, White and You! contest would not be possible without the parade committee members who spend much of the year fundraising and planning. Part of this year’s planning also included meeting with the Glenside Parade Committee to exchange ideas. “The Glenside Parade is one of the oldest Independence Day parades in the nation,” explained Jan. “It’s been a neat partnership. We’ve gotten a lot of great ideas from them and they have taken some of ours as well.” To offset the cost of the parade, the committee relies on donations from the bucket brigade as well as fundraisers and t-shirt sales throughout the year. “It’s because of the generosity of the Marple residents, sponsors and grants that we are able to provide the community with a spectacular parade,” said Jan. The committee was especially grateful to Thunderbird Pizza, who held an “Eat Pizza on the 4th to Support the 4th Pizza Fundraiser” this past April. Not only was it a fun evening and a great opportunity to sell this year’s parade t-shirts, but Thunderbird Pizza also generously donated proceeds from the pizza sales to the 2022 parade. Another source of funding is the commemorative booklet where local businesses, clubs and organizations can place an ad to show their community support. “Marple Newtown is able

to continue this tradition year after year thanks to these individuals and businesses,” said Leigh Ann Coary, a member of the parade committee. Leigh Ann said as a longtime Broomall resident she can’t imagine spending the Fourth of July any other way. “As new and younger families move to Broomall, I’m proud that the parade is such a big part of this community and will continue for years to come!” For more info. visit www.MarpleNewtownParade.com and like their Facebook page at @MarpleNewtownFourthOfJulyParade. Warmer Weather Means Increased Floor Care As we exit spring and look forward to the summer months, the warmer weather tends to bring more foot traffic into your home, and that greatly affects the various types of flooring you have throughout your house. Carpets and rugs can take a real beating, with everyone from the kids, their friends, neighbors and pets coming in and out all day, not to mention the direct corridor between your floors and the backyard, park, street and pool. Spring and fall are great times to do all of your special house cleaning, but if you didn’t take the time then, getting your carpets professionally cleaned before the foot traffic increases will extend the life of your carpets. As the back and forth on your floors increases, so does the debris that gets tracked into your home. When walked on, this debris can scratch and damage carpet fibers. It is vital to vacuum your carpets and sweep your hard surface floors routinely, as well as getting them professionally cleaned every 6–12 months. A professional cleaning can remove all of that debris that a vacuum cleaner can’t. After that, a professional cleaning will deep-clean the carpets so they can withstand all of that increased foot traffic. A professional carpet cleaning using the Very Low Moisture (VLM) method will give your carpets the thorough cleaning they need and have you back on
your carpets in about 1 hour after they’re finished. The VLM method limits the drying time, therefore speeding up your carpets’ accessibility. Carpets are also your home’s number one air filter, so regular cleaning of your carpets even helps improve the air quality within your home. As the summer heat begins to roll into the area in June and windows get closed for a few months, don’t forget to both extend the life of your carpets and improve your home’s air quality by getting your carpets cleaned. One final thought: High-traffic access doors to back yards and pools should always have a floor mat or runner, to catch moisture and debris coming in from outside and prevent it from getting on your carpets and hard surfaces. Have a great summer! NS

3 Ways to Get Top Dollar When Selling Your Home If you’re like most homeowners, your largest financial asset is your home. And when it’s time to sell your home, you hope a Buyer will offer your highest asking price. Here’s 3 ways to ensure you get top dollar for your home when it's time to sell. 1: Prioritize Regular Property Maintenance Seasonal maintenance helps ensure that your home stays in great shape. Regular seasonal maintenance includes cleaning rain gutters and siding, and inspecting and maintaining the condition of your roof, windows and HVAC systems. If you’ve been lagging behind on such maintenance, your Realtor can likely recommend individuals or businesses that can take care
of these things for you. Consider having your home pre-inspected and/or providing a one-year home warranty, to give buyers peace of mind. Then they will be confident in purchasing a maintained, protected home that they will enjoy for many years to come. This will make for a more attractive property and a smoother home inspection process. 2: Update the Kitchen and Bath Kitchens and baths are the true “money makers” when it comes to resale value. Many buyers decide on a property based on those spaces alone, so it’s important to look at it through a buyer’s eyes. Will buyers walk in and be able to imagine cooking their favorite meals for their family and friends? Or are they more likely to wonder how much it might cost to get the kitchen looking up-to-date? When a full kitchen remodel is not in your budget, painting the cabinets, installing new countertops and a brand-new appliance package can go a long way to help buyers see the potential. As for the bathrooms, if there’s no time or budget to retile the shower or floors, consider re-glazing them for a fraction of the cost. This is one tip that will make an immediate impact! It’s budget friendly, and it will take only a few days versus weeks. 3: Have a Professional Stage Your Home A professional home stager knows how to highlight the positive features of your home while minimizing the not-so-positive aspects. Their suggestions on where and how to spend your money will not just save you money, it will make you money in the end! A consultation with a stager can cost as little as a few hundred dollars but it could easily increase your return by thousands. For instance, are you considering repainting that moss green bedroom? Why spend the money when a home stager can use a few home accessories to make the space pop, saving you hundreds of dollars repainting the space. NS

In Memoriam: The Life and Legacy of Joseph V. Catania, Esq. by Sheila Turner-Hilliard
Joseph V. Catania, Esq.
Photos courtesy of Matt Catania Our Newtown Square community suffered a tremendous loss on May 1st with the word that our friend and neighbor, Joe Catania, had passed away unexpectedly.
Joe was a lifelong resident of Newtown Square. He was born and raised in the St. Albans section of Newtown Square where his parents still live today. Joe and his family were featured in our December 2021 issue, which highlighted four generations of Catanias still living and working in Newtown Square. To say that Joe was a pillar of our community is an understatement. He served as a Newtown Township Republican Leader, Chairman of the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors, and was the current Township Solicitor. Joe’s commitment to Newtown Township earned him special recognition in The Catania Family (L to R): Joey, Sarah, Kelsey, Matt, Luke, Joe, Maureen and Jimmy

The Challenger Division, Kings
2016 when the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution that publicly recognized him for his outstanding service and commitment to the residents of Newtown Township. But the work Joe was most proud of over the years was with his Challenger League family at Newtown Edgmont Little League (NELL). Joe and his wife, Maureen, introduced the program to NELL over 30 years ago, and their two special-needs sons, Jimmy and Luke, were inaugural players. Over the years, the program has expanded to include a Senior Challenger League. Now Jimmy and Luke are Assistant Coaches along with their brother Matt, who now sits on NELL’s Board, representing the Challenger Division. Joe’s lifetime of accomplishments and the positive impact he had on so many people will be remembered for many years to come. NELL’s President, Daren Grande, announced that all the league’s teams will wear a commemorative “JC” patch on their uniforms, and Joe’s family has requested that donations in his memory should be made to Newtown Edgmont Little League. If you were a friend of Joe, you were considered family. He was many things to many people: a husband, father, grandpop, son, brother uncle, coach, mentor and friend. He leaves behind his wife, Maureen, his four sons, Joey, Jimmy, Matt and Luke, his three grandchildren whom he absolutely adored, two daughtersin-law, his parents and siblings and many nieces and nephews.
Resolution passed in 2016 recognizing Joe for his accomplishments
Joe’s presence and commitment to his family and the residents of Newtown Square will be greatly missed. On behalf of all of us from Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine, we extend our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved Joe. NS

Amateur Radio Field Day at Drexel Lodge Park by Sheila Turner-Hilliard Photos courtesy of MNARC
Members of the Marple Newtown Amateur Radio Club (MNARC) will assemble on the weekend of June 25th and 26th in the pavilion at Drexel Lodge Park, to participate in their annual Amateur Radio Field Day. This annual 24-hour Field Day event takes place simultaneously around the United States and Canada. It’s an emergency preparedness exercise for U.S. and Canadian Amateur Radio enthusiasts whose goal during the event is to improve on how quickly they can set up a reliable Amateur Radio (also known as ham radio) station in improvised conditions, using emergency power and temporary set-ups, so they’re ready to serve in an emergency. They also strive to make contact with as many other stations worldwide during the 24-hour event. “Last year, we were successful in making nearly 1,000 contacts, ranging from North America, Central America, the Caribbean and several locations in Western Europe,” said Feliks Bortkiewicz, a member of the MNARC who’s a retired Boeing Electrical Engineer. Feliks also explained that this annual Field Day event is also an opportunity to educate the public about ham radio and give them the opportunity to make their own radio contacts. “During the event, I am in charge of the ‘Get on the Air’ program,” he said. “I set up a separate radio station, and under my guidance, non-licensed individuals are able to learn how to make contact and communicate with stations around the world.”

Feliks explained that the science of Amateur Radio is always evolving and is still as necessary today as it was in the early 20th century. Although the science of radio transmission started with the use of Morse code and voice transmission, today’s implementation also includes digital modes using computers, video transmission and satellite communications. “Many of us remember when Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico in

John Hucke (K3JH), a member of the Marple Newtown Amateur Radio Club ‘working’ the band during Field Day
September of 2017,” Feliks said. “What many don’t know is that when the power went out and cellular networks failed completely on the entire island, amateur radio operators stepped in and became the first source of communication for first responders, the Red Cross and for families on the mainland.” Feliks said that to obtain a license to be an amateur radio operator, you need to study the basics of radio theory and pass tests issued by the FCC. “In my opinion, becoming licensed is the ultimate implementation of the STEM experience (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math),” he enthusiastically explained. “For folks who are interested, the MNARC offers classes and training, and we’re happy to partner with area high schools and clubs.” In the early ’90s, a small group of local amateur ham radio hobbyists formed the MNARC. The club now has over 100 members, and the club’s ham radio station call letters are K3MN. Meetings are open to the public and are held the first Thursday of every month (except in July and August), starting at 7pm at the Robert C. Gauntlett Center on Media Line Rd in Newtown Square. MNARC connects people of all ages who are interested in staying current with what’s new in the science and art of Amateur Radio. At MNARC meetings, hobbyists or industry professionals give presentations on topics such as electronic tinkering, equipment designs to improve transmitters and receivers, and how to troubleshoot and resolve radio signal interference problems. Some meetings offer experiential presentations by members who share what they did and learned when they took their radio equipment to a remote location. Optional time-limited

Some members focus on educating youth or the local community about ham radio as a hobby. MNARC (www.MNARC.org) is affiliated with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for Amateur Radio in the U.S. Founded in 1914, its original purpose was to link ham radio station operators who could transmit Morse code messages between stations too far apart to directly connect with each other. ARRL has 160,000+ members, and its mission is to support the awareness and growth of Amateur Radio in the U.S. and worldwide. ARRL also advocates for meaningful ongoing access to government resources and Amateur Radio spectrum airwaves. To learn more about Amateur Radio and its annual Field Day event, please visit www.MNARC.org or head over to Drexel Lodge Park to see it all in action. The event begins at 2pm on Saturday June 25th and continues until 2pm on Sunday June 26th. NS

What to Look for in an Ideal Roofer
Have a leaky roof? Maybe your existing roof has outlived its typical lifespan, or you’re considering a new roof to significantly improve your home’s curb appeal. Whatever the reason you may be in search of a quality roofing contractor, it’s imperative that you find someone you can be sure will get the job done quickly, cleanly and to your satisfaction.
2. Do They Listen and Empathize with Your Concerns? Do they really listen to what you want, your concerns and goals for your upcoming roofing project? Are you given adequate time to ask all your questions, and are you satisfied with the answers? Is the conversation a two-way street or does it seem you’re being treated simply as another possible sale?
You deserve to have all your expectations fully met or even exceeded. From start to finish, your level of satisfaction will be based on how well or poorly a roofing contractor — or any business — fulfills these expectations.
3. Can They Identify and Justify All Recommended Solutions? As a homeowner, you need to be well informed in order to make a wise decision about which roofing contractor or roofing solution to select. You need details about the proposed products and clear justifications about their efficiency and cost. If several price options are offered, you deserve to know the pros and cons of each option so you can make an informed decision. If the contractor isn’t completely comfortable with you asking all your questions, they probably aren’t the right roofer for you.
1. Are They Responsive, On Time, Honest and Transparent? A non-responsive contractor or one that shows up late or not at all with no valid explanation are serious causes for concern. Everyone’s time is valuable, so contractors who don’t recognize that or who don’t seem completely open and honest may not deserve to get your business.
4. Hopefully They Under-Promise and Over-Deliver Before you make any decisions, you should receive in writing a detailed description that includes how they will manage the project and what its timeline will be. This way, your expectations can be met or even exceeded if all factors involved (weather, product availability, staffing) perfectly align. If you receive no detailed project description, there’s no promise made and no possibility that they’ll over-deliver.
WELCOME BACK PATIO
5. Will They Make the Project as Painless as Possible? Unfortunately, roofing projects are usually messy, noisy and often inconvenient. Add that to the expense of the project, and it’s no surprise that your roof is arguably the most important part of your home’s exterior. High-quality and truly professional roofing contractors make sure to make it as painless a project as possible. The ideal roofing contractor will give you great reasons during and after the project to be proud and glad you selected them. NS

aware of your medical history is extremely important so they’ll know which exercises may be good for you as well as which ones you should avoid. For starters, the misconception that you MUST commit hours at a time, several days per week to gain any level of fitness needs to be done away with. That has been proven to simply be not true. Especially at the beginning, 15–20 minutes of exercise per day, three to four days a week can be ideal. Take a brief walk on your lunch break. Take the stairs instead of the elevator when possible. Lie on the floor during commercial breaks while watching TV and do some hamstring stretches or mini crunches. Try doing 10 wall squats while dinner is cooking, and then turn around to do 10 wall push ups. There are dozens of simple exercises that you can do without any equipment or the need to be in a gym. Your PT will be able to provide you with a series of exercises like these, in addition to ways to increase the intensity of your program as you progress. It’s true that eventually you may need to dedicate a little more time in order to lose those stubborn pounds, but you have to start somewhere. Those first few days always seem to be the hardest part, but there are ways to make that process easier than you may have thought. Don’t let exercise intimidate you. Pick up the phone and call your local PT. They will be happy to help guide you through the process, and in most cases your medical insurance will cover the expense. Insurance companies much prefer to pay for preventive measures versus post-injury rehab. Hopefully, you’ll be able to look in the mirror this summer while wearing your bathing suit and smile. NS
