HESED COMMITTEE Dear Congregants, We hope you and your families are doing well during the quarantine. As the virus numbers in the state are beginning to rise again, it is important that we recognize that many of our congregants are feeling more isolated than ever. Perhaps you know of members who would benefit from ongoing contact from a caring congregant or perhaps you wish for this outreach. If so, please let us know, and we will have a volunteer contact you on a regular basis. We cannot do this, however, unless you let us know. Please let us help you if you- or someone you know- need it! We don’t want you to feel alone. We continue to reach out to congregants to mark happy milestones, such as birthdays and anniversaries. We want you to know you are being thought of during these happy occasions. If you would like to help make these calls, please contact Marilyn or Evan.

If you need assistance with technology to participate in the synagogue offerings or if you need a cloth mask, please let us know! Finally, we would like to welcome all the new members to our Beth Judea family. Thank you for recognizing CBJ as a warm and welcoming community. While we cannot congregate in person, there are many opportunities for you to become involved. If joining our committee is enticing, please call or mail us. Our email address is listed below. If you would be interested in helping us in the future or have suggestions on how to best meet the needs of congregants, please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. We wish each of you the best. Please stay safe and use all reasonable precautions to remain healthy. We are one family and need to take care of each other. Evan Rumack Marilyn Green-Rebnord

WAYS & MEANS

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education Did You Know This About Purim? •

Esther was a vegetarian. According to midrash, while Queen Esther lived in the court of King Ahasuerus, she followed a vegetarian diet consisting largely of legumes so that she would not break the laws of kashrut. For this reason, it is a tradition to eat beans and peas on Purim.

There should be a go-between in delivering your mishloach manot. In the Book of Esther, it stipulates that we should send gifts to one another, not just give gifts to each another. So, send your packets of goodies to a friend via a messenger. Anyone can act as a go-between.

The Book of Esther is the only biblical book that does not include G-d’s name. The Book of Esther also makes no reference to the Temple, to prayer, nor to Jewish practices such as kashrut.

Hamantaschen might have been designed to symbolize Haman’s hat — or his ears or pockets. Some say these cookies represent Haman’s ears, and refer to a custom of cutting off a criminal’s ears before his execution. Another theory is that the three corners represent the three patriarchs, whose power weakened Haman and gave strength to Esther to save the Jews. Yet another theory: Because the German word tasche means “pouch” or “pocket,” the cookies could signify Haman’s pockets and the money he offered the king for permission to kill the Jews.

In 1945, a group of American GI’s held belated Purim services inside a confiscated castle. A Jewish chaplain “carefully arranged the candles over a swastika-bedecked bookcase in the main dining room,” and Jewish soldiers explained to their Christian comrades in attendance about Haman and why it was so fitting that Purim services should be held in a castle that a Nazi propagandist had confiscated from the Jews.

The Jewish calendar has a regular leap year with two months of Adar (but only one Purim, which falls during the second Adar). To ensure that the holidays remain in their seasons, the Jewish calendar gets adjusted to accommodate the 11-day difference between the lunar and solar years. A formula was created to know in which years a leap month would be added: every 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th, and 19th year over a 19-year period.

Sisterhood I really wish I had something inspirational to say, but as I sit here on a gray Sunday afternoon, I note how still everything seems right now. This is typically the hardest time of the year for me, living in the Midwest. I am trying to embrace the stillness, finding fulfilment. Some moments are better than others, but I want to look back at this period with some sense that I nurtured myself and those in my COVID circle, that I was able to slow down and just let things be. I hope that all of you are able to find what you are looking for in the stillness of this COVID winter. On behalf of Sisterhood, I want to thank Ellen Antman and all the vendors for a fun Virtual Vashti event. Moving our typical Vashti Night to a virtual event worked really well. Thank you to all who attended and supported this event and fundraiser. Thank you to Margie Miller for taking the time to talk to us about resilience. It could not be a more important topic right now. Her stories were inspirational and left us all with things to think about. Thank you to Elizabeth Ladin-Gross for putting this event together.

Our Heart of Quilling event will be taking place on Feb 15th. We are past the RSVP date, but we ordered a couple of extra kits. Please reach out to Marilyn Victor or Hannah WhitneyStein if you are interested to find out what is left. Feb 20th is Sisterhood Shabbat. Thank you to Darlene Bikshorn for organizing all of us. It will be a beautiful Shabbat lead by your fellow sisters. We hope to see as many Zoom squares as there were for Trivia night! March 14th will be our first Mah Jongg tournament. The flyer is out; details are available. Many thanks to Renee Kaplan and her committee for putting it all together.

We all know that we are better together. That being said, we have a few Board positions we are looking to fill. Now is a great time to get more involved in Sisterhood from your family room, living room, or dining room! Please reach out to Michele, Sarah Goldenberg (sarahbgoldenberg@gmail.com), or me with any thoughts or questions. New ideas are always welcome! Debbie Limer Debs825@datamanagersinc.com

Men’s Club Shalom from the Men’s Club. As we are now in the midst of winter, we are past the holiday season and looking ahead to the upcoming festivals of Tu B’Shevat (January 27) and Purim (February 26). Tu B’Shevat is a curious festival in that we are celebrating the New Year of the Trees. What we are really celebrating is the end of the rainy season in Israel and the start of the trees blossoming and producing their fruit. Purim, as we all know, is the holiday that commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from being killed by Haman (Booo!!) as told in the Book of Esther, or the Megillah. While we won’t be able to celebrate as we would like, we still can enjoy the reading of the Megillah Thursday evening February 25 or Friday morning February 26, and the other events that will be available. On January 13th, we had another Schmooze and L’chaim. This was well attended, and we had approximately 20 men attend. The conversation was lively, and it is nice to meet and just talk. Our next Schmooze and L’chaim is in the planning stages. A date has not been selected yet, but stay tuned. On January 29, we held the Hebrew Literacy class graduation during Friday Shabbat services. Mazel tov to Sandy Citron and Sarah Polakow on completing the course. I know that your families are enormously proud of you. Ya’asher kocachem to Jerry Sakol and Daniel Landau on a wonderful job as their instructors. On January 30-31, the FJMC Leadership Development Institute (LDI) took place, and the Beth Judea Men’s Club was well represented. This program is incredibly special to us, as our own Norm Kurtz and Dr. Bert Fishman (z’’l) were creators of this annual event. This year, Eric Yegelwel was one of the program chairmen and Brandt Rosen was an attendee. Having been an attendee myself, I

The Word – February 2021

know what a great weekend this is. As with everything else, this year it was a virtual event. While I can’t say too much more about the event at this time, as I am writing this article prior to the event, I will have more in my next article. On February 7, Super Bowl Sunday, we will be having our annual World-Wide Wrap. This year it will be virtual, and our committee, which includes Norm Kurtz, Orin Rotman, Brandt Rosen, Rabbi Zimbalist, Anna Besser, Evan Rumack, Sam Sussman, and me, have been working hard to put together a meaningful and fun program. We hope you can join us for what will be a very unique and fun morning. On Wednesday, February 17, we will be having another Tap the Torah discussion. Rhonda Cohn will be the presenter, and she will be talking about the orthodox practice/rulings on avoiding women’s voices both literally and figuratively. This is sure to be a thoughtprovoking topic. Keep an eye on your email for additional information. Finally, a very hearty congratulations goes to Eric Yegelwel and Ron Friedman, both past presidents of our men’s club. Eric has been nominated as a Vice President and Ron has been nominated as Corresponding Secretary for the Board of the Midwest Region FJMC. I know both of you will do well in these positions, and you are keeping the tradition of CBJ men to move to the next level in our organization. Mazel Tov!! That’s it for now. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. L’Shalom, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

• • •

Do you need some help? Do you need a ride to a doctor’s appointment? Do you need a ride to services at Beth Judea?

WHAT IS THE HELPING HAND PLAN? Beth Judea has a group of volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to lend a hand. Just call or e-mail if you need some assistance. WHO DO I CONTACT TO REQUEST SOME HELP? Please call Larry Wollheim at 847-6349399 or e-mail Larry at lwollheim45@gmail.com to request help. It’s a Mitzvah to help someone. Please allow us to help you.

You Make A Difference We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Ellene Lammers Marilyn Green-Rebnord Evan Rumack Larry Wolheim

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 34
