A permit is required for any organized event at any City of Charleston park, facility, or field. Permit applications must be submitted 14 days prior to the event. *All events (including weddings) held at Riley Waterfront Park, Angel Oak Tree or at White Point Garden are limited to 25 people at the event (total includes the bride and groom, wedding party & children).
STEPS TO APPLY FOR A PERMIT
1. Contact the City of Charleston Recreation Main Office at (843) 724-7327 at least 14 business days prior to the event. Some events are required to submit a special event permit 45-120 days prior to the event depending on the complexity of the application. 2. Verify if the date is available. 3. Apply for a permit at 823 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403. 4. Dates are secured once assigned fees are paid and an approved permit is issued. (Check, money order and Visa/MasterCard are accepted; NO CASH) Permits are subject to approval. If your event request requires a street blockage or parade, you will need additional permits from Traffic and Transportation and the Charleston Police Department. These permits may be completed at the Recreation Main Office at 823 Meeting St. Any event that anticipates a large crowd, impacts the neighborhood, allows alcohol, or uses amplified sound is required to have a special event permit. Allow a minimum of 45 days for this process. Fees for the permit are based on the complexity of the event.
SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
The Special Events Committee is comprised of several different City of Charleston departments to make the permit process as smooth and decisive as possible. Once a permit is completed, the applicant may need to appear before the committee for approval. Meeting bi-monthly, this committee decides on a number of permits including weddings, festivals, athletic events, and other group gatherings. Should you be asked to appear in front of the Special Events Committee, please bring all materials related to your event, including a site plan.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION Therapeutic Recreation is the practice of using purposeful recreation and leisure to address the specific needs and goals of everyone in our community, no matter the ability. We believe that every person should be able to participate in recreation activities with no issues, barriers, or hindrances. Our programs take a holistic, inclusive approach that provides a positive environment for every participant to learn a new skill or sport, be more active, develop social skills, and have fun! Unified Sports are inclusive sports programs that combine an approximately equal number of Special Olympics athletes (individuals with intellectual disabilities) and volunteer partners (individuals without intellectual disabilities) on teams for training and competition. Smaller fields and modified equipment may be used to ensure fairness and safety for all. Pre-registration is required for all programs.
SUMMER UNIFIED CAMPS & PROGRAMS UNIFIED SUMMER SPORTS SAMPLER Participants will try different sports-related activities and learn about good health and nutrition by taking part in creating a healthy meal with the group. INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED CLASSES Intermediate and advanced classes are broken into levels based on skill and ability. These classes help build mastery of fundamental gymnastics. Classes will be split up by age groups: 5-7 and 8+. Moving up from one level to the next requires mastery of a set of skills specific to the current class level. Intermediate and advanced classes offered by recommendation only. Instructors recommend children that they think are ready for the next level. If you are a current participant and would like to have your child evaluated, please discuss with the Recreation Coordinator.
