ABOUT CITY OF CHARLESTON RECREATION LETTER FROM THE MAYOR January 1, 2020
Registration Information.................................................. 3
Dear Charleston Resident: Each year, I look forward to sharing the city of Charleston Recreation Department's brochure, which showcases the incredible activities, programs, and events offered to our citizens. This year's recreational offerings, which include sports, lessons, camps, and afterschool programs, demonstrate our ongoing commitment to providing enjoyable, affordable recreation for all of our city's residents, both youth and adults. Enhancing our parks and recreation facilities remains a top priority, and this year, we are completing a comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan to assess our current facilities and programs and provide a detailed framework and action steps for future improvements. Public engagement will be a critical component of the master plan, so I encourage you to attend upcoming public meetings and provide your feedback. We're also looking forward to the opening of the Daniel Island Recreation Center, scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, which will feature a full size basketball court, a dedicated exercise room for group classes such as Zumba and yoga, an area for cardio equipment including stationary bikes, treadmills and elipticals, a multipurpose room and a public meeting room. On James Island, fundraising for improvements to the Municipal Golf Course has been going well, and renovations will begin this year. Our Recreation Department works hard to ensure that there are plenty of oppportunities for residents to come together, remain active, and have fun. I encourage you and your families to take advantage of these opportunities, whether continuing a favorite activity or trying something new, and to enjoy all of the beautiful spaces that our remarkable city has to offer.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION Therapeutic Recreation is the practice of using purposeful recreation and leisure to address the specific needs and goals of everyone in our community, no matter the ability. We believe that every person should be able to participate in recreation activities with no issues, barriers, or hindrances. Our programs take a holistic, inclusive approach that provides a positive environment for every participant to learn a new skill or sport, be more active, develop social skills, and have fun! Unified Sports are inclusive sports programs that combine an approximately equal number of Special Olympics athletes (individuals with intellectual disabilities) and volunteer partners (individuals without intellectual disabilities) on teams for training and competition. Smaller fields and modified equipment may be used to ensure fairness and safety for all. Pre-registration is required for all programs.

GOLF Affectionately known as “The Muni” by Charlestonians, the Charleston Municipal Golf Course is nestled on the banks of the Stono River on James Island. With six sets of tees, this 18-hole championship facility is brilliantly designed to welcome beginners of all ages and challenge golfers of every skill level. A friendly and knowledgeable staff, and superb playing conditions year-round, it is not surprising that more golfers play “The Muni,” than any other golf course in the area. Try the lighted driving range, practice putting green, or visit the Pro Shop with the best prices in town. The City of Charleston Municipal Golf Course has the charm of tradition with all the comforts of a modern golf complex. The Municipal Golf Course accepts all players. Please check with the Pro Shop for more information about potential golf cart restrictions due to weather, tides, or course maintenance.

RENOVATION UPDATE Troy Miller, of Miller Golf Design, is heading up the design phase of the project with the goal of restoring features to their original beauty, incorporating the lovely environmental surroundings, and alleviating drainage and flooding issues for our neighbors and the course itself. The renovation of the practice area will create additional space, allowing for continued growth of the Muni's youth programs. The targeted start date is January 2020 and is slated to be completed by the end of the year. Partial closures should be expected for portions of the year, but we anticipate operating on a limited basis throughout the process.
