ABOUT CITY OF CHARLESTON RECREATION A LETTER FROM THE MAYOR January 1, 2019

Dear Charleston Resident,
Recreation Staff Directory ............................................... 4
I am happy to share with you the city of Charleston Recreation Department’s Winter/Spring bi-annual brochure, which showcases the range of incredible activities, programs, and events offered to our citizens. This season's brochure, which includes a variety of sports, events, lessons, camps, and afterschool programs, is a testament to our ongoing commitment to providing enjoyable, affordable recreation for all of our city’s residents, both youth and adults.
Facilities & Parks Directory ............................................. 5
We continue taking steps to enhance our public realm, with several projects underway throughout the city. Among these are the brand new Daniel Island Recreation Center, which we broke ground on in September after a tremendous amount of collaboration between community members, city staff, and the design team. We’ve also kicked off a robust fundraising campaign to raise money for the Municipal Golf Course renovation, slated to begin in December 2019, which will enhance the playing experience for golfers of all skill levels and ensure that the Muni is cherished by our citizens for many more years. We’ve also secured Parks and Recreation Master Plan funding, which will allow us to move forward in creating a comprehensive plan to meet our city’s parks and recreation needs today and over the next decade. As we strive to create the best quality of life for all of Charleston’s citizens, we will continue working to create opportunities for our residents to interact, stay active, and have fun. The Recreation Department is home to many such opportunities, so I encourage you and your loved ones to take advantage of all that they, and the rest of our great city, have to offer. Most sincerely yours, John J. Tecklenburg Mayor, City of Charleston

STEPS TO APPLY FOR A PERMIT
Permits are subject to approval. If your event request requires a street blockage or parade, you will need additional permits from Traffic and Transportation and the Charleston Police Department. These permits may be completed at the Recreation Main Office at 823 Meeting St. Any event that anticipates a large crowd, impacts the neighborhood, allows alcohol, or uses amplified sound is required to have a special event permit. Allow a minimum of 45 days for this process. Fees for the permit are based on the complexity of the event. 1. Contact the City of Charleston Recreation Main Office at (843) 724-7327 at least 14 business days prior to the event. Some events are required to submit a special event permit 45-120 days prior to the event depending on the complexity of the application. 2. Verify if the date is available. 3. Apply for a permit at 823 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403. 4. Dates are secured once assigned fees are paid and an approved permit is issued. (Check and Visa/MasterCard are accepted; NO CASH)
SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
The Special Events Committee is comprised of several different City of Charleston departments to make the permit process as smooth and decisive as possible. Once a permit is completed, the applicant may need to appear before the committee for approval. Meeting bi-monthly, this committee decides on a number of permits including weddings, festivals, athletic events, and other group gatherings. Should you be asked to appear in front of the Special Events Committee, please bring all materials related to your event, including a site plan.

YOUTH PROGRAMS Everyone gets knocked down. Champions get back up. Featured in Fall 2018 Issue of SCRPA Magazine
FITNESS & SPRING DAY CAMPS
“I saw a need for a program like this in the community. Boxing is a tool to get kids off the street and get them on the right track to becoming successful citizens,” Norton said. In the back room of the community center, punching bags hang from the ceiling over a boxing ring for the kids to practice in. Although the gym has been open for a little over a year, it has provided a second home for several kids in the neighborhood. Three kids, in particular, have had their lives changed since joining the club. Fourteen-year-old, JaDen Sheppard, 13-year-old Sarah Darwin and 9-year-old Jaquez Washington all train under Coach Norton, assisted by Washington’s father, Geraldo Washington. All three kids have been training for less than a year, but have already won several competitions and championships.
Although Shaw Community Center on Mary Street in downtown Charleston looks ordinary on the outside, the inside provides a place for kids to make a difference in their lives and in the lives of others. Located in downtown Charleston, the Shaw Community Center provides many activities for locals of the city to participate in. The most notable being their “Future Champions Boxing Club.” The club teaches boxing techniques to kids as they train alongside Gerard “Kid” Norton. As a 16-time South Carolina State Boxing Champion, Norton wants to help kids get on the right track. Through the club, kids gain confidence and resilience inside and outside the ring.
Norton added, “The kids train hard and do whatever I ask of them. JaDen and Sarah would be undefeated, but they have endured a few losses. They get back up though and persevere through the pain. I ask them, ‘How do you bounce back from this?’ It’s about how you get back up when you get knocked down.”

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION Therapeutic Recreation is the practice of using purposeful recreation and leisure to address the specific needs and goals of everyone in our community, no matter the ability. We believe that every person should be able to participate in recreation activities with no issues, barriers, or hindrances. Our programs take a holistic, inclusive approach that provides a positive environment for every participant to learn a new skill or sport, be more active, develop social skills, and have fun! Unified Sports are inclusive sports programs that combine an approximately equal number of Special Olympics athletes (individuals with intellectual disabilities) and volunteer partners (individuals without intellectual disabilities) on teams for training and competition. Smaller fields and modified equipment may be used to ensure fairness and safety for all. Pre-registration is required for all programs.

UNIFIED CHEERLEADING
UNIFIED COOKING
Cheerleaders will have the opportunity to cheer for the Swamp Fox basketball team and compete in a Special Olympics competition. Competition: March 2.
Becoming independent in the kitchen is a valuable life skill, and we make cooking fun! Students will learn kitchen and food safety, while being a part of the process of learning to read recipes and shopping for ingredients. Guided hands-on cooking in a relaxed and fun environment is the best way to learn. Students will enjoy the meal they create in class.
Ravenel Gym (St. Andrew’s Middle) Day/Time Dec. 18-March 2 Tuesdays 6:00pm-7:00pm
How does an individual learn the basic life skills needed to live independently or become a contributing member of society? In most cases, we acquire these skills over time with guidance from teachers, parents and others involved in our daily lives. For adults with physical, emotional or intellectual disabilities in Charleston, there is a program called Beyond BASIC. Beyond BASIC was created in an effort to provide more variety and learning opportunities to adults with special needs in the community. The mission statement for Beyond BASIC is “to assist adults with special needs in becoming contributing members of society, by providing a program that fosters independent living skills beyond the basics.” Participants in this program learn new skills and practice regular activities to encourage inclusion within the community. There are five goals that make up Beyond Basic: develop social skills, develop health awareness, develop independent living skills, increase self-esteem, and develop areas of personal interest. This transitional program was created for participants who have aged out of school system programs. Parents and caretakers constantly face fears of what will happen to their child when they pass on. Who is responsible for caring for these individuals? The answer to that question: we are all responsible. It is important for us to help these individuals attain a level of independence to encourage them to become well-functioning members of society. Beyond BASIC currently meets in three six-week sessions with a once-per-week class. In a typical 9:00am-5:00pm day, participants could experience planning a budget, learning about nutrition, discussing personal safety, cooking and planning a healthy meal, and so much more. Program facilitators Ashton Johnson and Molly Smith work to create a curriculum that provides necessary life skills in each class. Each session may include new and returning participants who have varying levels of special needs. Participants, caretakers, parents and all who are involved in Beyond BASIC see the results of the program daily. The challenges of creating this necessary program have evolved into infinite opportunities to the special needs community in Charleston.
