140th year

I

From the Artistic Director

Growing up in Lindsborg, there were many women who had a major impact on my artistic life. Marie Muller was an administrator at the hospital where my mother worked, and fostered my musical life by giving me records from the collection of Oscar Thorsen. Patty Karstadt, Cathleen Robinson, Lori (Lindshield) McKinney, Freda Woodard, Rachel Carlson, and Ruth Thorstenburg were all women who taught me music as I came into my own as a musician. But, strong women have always been present in my life. My mother and sister were and are strong women on whom I have leaned and from whom I have learned. Lindsborg itself has been influenced greatly by the many strong women who have helped to steer the artistic life of the town. One of the most influential was, of course, Alma Swensson, who seemingly single-handedly completed the work necessary to get the Messiah Festival off the ground in 1882. We often think of her as one of the soprano soloists, but Mrs. Swensson was much more than that, traveling by horseback around town, teaching Swedish immigrants the choruses to Handel’s famous work. This year, as we attempt to continue on with the 140th Messiah Festival of the Arts during a world-wide pandemic, it is no wonder that many of the faces keeping things working are strong, artistic women like Messiah Festival Coordinator, Manda Deegan, and President of the Bethany Oratorio Society, Dr. Elizabeth Mauch, as well as countless others (too many to mention here). I hope this year’s festival will allow you each to have an opportunity to reflect on the women in your lives and to honor them as we are attempting to honor the many women associated with Lindsborg and Bethany College. — Mark Lucas, Ph.D. ’94

Dear Bethany Alumni and Friends, Welcome to the 140th season of the Messiah Festival of the Arts at Bethany College! Alma Swensson believed that hardships of the prairie could be lessened by music and it was this belief that brought the Messiah performance, now celebrating its 140th year, to Lindsborg, Kansas. Known as the wife of Bethany founder Carl Aaron Swensson and mother of two, she should also be known for her patience that encouraged Swedish Immigrants to sing in the Messiah chorus, despite speaking no English. Alma’s vision is still relevant as we celebrate music to lessen the hardships of the pandemic. In honor of women such as Alma Swensson, I’d like to join Dr. Lucas in sharing the impact of those women who inspired me: my mother, Kay Sommers, Professor of Mathematics at Moravian College, and Jessica Kozloff, President Emerita of Bloomsburg University. It is these women who shaped me to serve as the first female president at Bethany, and to serve the campus community in such an unprecedented time such as the pandemic. As we celebrate women of the past who have given us strength to look to the future, I strive to do the same. G.N. Malm designed a medal for Mrs. Swensson to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the performances of the Messiah, and wrote in Greek, “one sows, another reaps”. The image on the medal portrayed a woman sowing grain and a man harvesting which could also symbolize the underlying efforts of Mrs. Swensson that continue to benefit so many. My hope is that what we sow in young minds at Bethany will be what our future reaps. As we move forward from this pandemic, it will be the focus of the future that carries us through. At Bethany, our future includes work through the Path to Your Purpose campaign focused on tangible and intangible improvements so students can find their purpose beyond Bethany. Peace and blessings,

Dr. Elizabeth Mauch Bethany College President

Supporting the college’s effort to live out its missional direction of Sustainability, we encourage you to use one program as you attend the many events during the Messiah Festival of the Arts. 2

he Swedish immigrant pioneers who established Lindsborg in 1869 in the Smoky Valley of central Kansas came to the New World primarily for religious freedom of worship and expression, which at the time was unattainable in their part of Europe. They brought with them intense sensitivities and appreciation for music and the fine arts.

orchestra at least once annually since March 28, 1882 - the longest annual consecutive performance of Messiah in North America. Readers’ Digest magazine in the 1940s called this tradition in Lindsborg The Oberammergau of the Plains.

The society has performed Messiah across the plains, in Carnegie Hall and on national television. The Bethany Messiah tradition is a major Kansas historical and cultural event and a moving statement of community and perseverance.

In December 1881, because of a variety of historical factors, they established the renowned Messiah oratorio musical tradition, which has come down to the present-day, due largely to the devotion and commitment of the people of Lindsborg and Bethany College. Their organization of a chorus and orchestra soon became known as the Bethany Oratorio Society, or commonly the Messiah chorus.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s great oratorio St. Matthew Passion has been presented by the same oratorio society annually since 1925, and since 1929, it has been presented on Good Friday evening during the 10-day Messiah Festival. For many musicians and concert-goers alike, this Bach masterpiece and its message have become an essence of the festival.

Handel’s Messiah is the foundation of this festival. This masterpiece oratorio has been presented in Lindsborg by a large community chorus and

THE REVOLUTIONISTS — LAUREN GUNDRSON

MARCH 26 BURNETT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters,” states playwright Lauren Gunderson, “and how we actually go about changing the world.”

The stage is set: Paris, France, 1793, the Revolution is in its fourth year and the Reign of Terror is in full swing. (And this is a comedy!) In the midst of all the furor and falling blades are four bold women: playwright Olympe De Gouge, young assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen of France Marie Antoinette, and fiery Haitian rebel Marianne Angell. Charlotte, Marie, and Marianne come to Olympe (the only female dramatist left in the City of Light) in search of something they need—stirring words for political pamphlets, a memorable last line, a rewrite—and try to “beat back the extremist insanity” that has taken root during the Reign.

It’s a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection . . . that ends in a song and a scaffold.

The Revolutionists is a “grand and dream-tweaked comedy …about violence and legacy, art and

Bethany College 140 YEARS OF EDUCATION

O

n October 15, 1881, 10 students began taking classes in the Bethany Lutheran Church sacristy, in what was then called Bethany Academy. Originally intended as a high school of Lutheran immigrants, the mission of the fledging academy and today’s college are much the same: to educate, develop, and challenge individuals in their search for truth and excellence as they lead lives of faith, learning, and service.

Lindsborg. Students discover their own gifts, talents, skills, abilities, and passions by participating in an active campus life. With more than 30 organizations and athletic programs, students are challenged in both living and learning communities. Bethany’s core values of integrity, hospitality, community, servant leadership, sustainability, and excellence involve students in something bigger than themselves. As a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Bethany encourages students to explore and deepen their faith. Regular chapel services, campus ministry activities, and guidance and pastoral care from Bethany’s campus pastor help students find their spirituality.

Bethany College awards Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Music Education degrees. With academic programs powered by attentive faculty, students are challenged with meaningful curriculum and engaging experiences in and out of class. All students are encouraged to participate in ExperienceBased Education, an internship-for-credit program in which students explore career options and gain practical experience. Qualifying students may be accepted into the Bethany College Honor Program, which gives intellectually curious students additional mentoring and academic opportunities.

Bethany’s strong fine art programs continue rich histories, including the tenure of painter Birger Sandzén and the longest running North American Messiah performance. Fine arts majors learn to make their passion into careers, and non-majors explore art and music through co-curricular clubs and ensembles. For more information, please visit www.bethanylb.edu or call (800) 826-2281.

At Bethany, students explore their paths on a small residential campus that is just minutes away from the shops, art galleries, and restaurants of downtown
