Site Portrait An Introduction In this book, we will be looking at a site that turned out to be an abandoned industrial site, which has made the EPA list of sites in need of remediation. I will also be examining the relationship of the site to its history, along with looking into the relationship between the site and its surrounding context. I will explore these ideas through a variety of mapping techniques. The first map is a detail of a Composite map showing the Common Resource Area in relationship to the site. The second map is a historic Sanborn Fire Insurance map, showing that the industry on the site and located nearby are insured while the rest of the surroundings are not, or are simply not developed yet in 1921. On the site is The American Zinc Oxide Company, while across Windsor is The Farmers Fertilizer Company, both companies are located with easy access to the railroads. The GIS map shows the currently build up around the site in residential neighborhoods. The hand drawn context map and annotated aerial further explore the relationship of the site to its surroundings. While the sections examine how the history of the site is different from the current condition of the site, productive industrial to an abandoned brownfield condition. The 10x3 detail thumbnails bring the two explorations together into one by examining the historical and context relations to the site while exploring the site and its edges through a series of photos. By examining all of these maps, photographs and diagrams, we will be able to have a better understanding of the site and its relationships throughout history to the present to its surroundings.

GIS Map This map shows the site and context through illustrating the location of roads, building footprints and parcel lines. Even through the simplicity of this map, you can see the areas that have are industrial, residential and abandoned areas.

Historic Map - 1921 This map is the 1921 Sanborn Map showing that the Fertilizer company had fire insurance, however none of the surrounding areas did at the time. This also shows the relation of the site development to the railroads. There is also one building footprint that has remained on the site as a memory of the past. Site Portrait | 3

Annotated Aerial This aerial also illustrates the location of Residential areas, industrial areas and public areas around the site. The darkest shade is on the site. The lighter shaded areas are industrial. While the areas outlined in red are residential areas. Residential Area Cemetery

Hand Drawn Context Map This shows the areas that are residential using shading an the location and proximity. The areas shaded in red are the industrial or former industrial sites. The areas left in white are schools, parks and other public spaces and amenities.

Transects and Sections

This section shows how the land was mostly flat to begin with but rubble piles have started to create mounds on the site. Allowing for water to collect in the resulting dips.

This section shows that there has been quite a bit of build up along the edge of the site blocking views while you are traveling down Joyce Ave.

This sections shows how the site was mostly flat but built up under buildings that have since been torn down to add to the rubble left on the site. 6 | LA 3430 | Beth Clausing

Rubble Pile

This detail shows that the area is still industrial even after other areas have been abandoned.

This context detail shows that even though industry has moved on and away from the site, it hasn’t moved out of the site yet.

This detail shows that when the spaced stopped being used as much, no one came to park anymore so the spots were reclaimed by nature from the world of pavement.

This context detail illustrates an example of when a building is torn down but not all that remains from the destruction is removed from the site.

The context detail shows the new industry uses trucks for transportation, helping to encourage a further development of roads.

This detail shows the old method of industry transportation was to use the railroads. They are being phased out.

This context detail shows how long the area has been restricted from use and has been allowed to grow wild.

This detail shows how a fabric wall happens in a prairie condition and how the prairie then reacts to it.
