Families’ awards at House of Lords BY MEHREEN HUSSAIN
FAMILIES from Stepney Partnership schools were given a national award at the House of Lords. At the Youth Achievement Awards, organised by the Universal Peace Federation, youngsters shared stories about becoming role models to their peers, leading campaigns, or changing their communities for the better. The six families from Ben Jonson, Cayley, Halley, Redlands, Smithy Street and Stepney Green schools received awards for the impact they have had on their children’s learning and the wider community. Ben Yeo,
Families with Rushnara Ali Stepney Partnership Project manager, said “The awards show just how far the six Stepney Partnership schools have come in bringing families closer to their children’s learning – in these schools, parents and car-
ers are truly at the centre of school life.” The families enjoyed the day, starting with a special tour of the House of Commons by Bethnal Green and Bow MP Rushanara Ali.
All the way to Uganda, without leaving school PUPILS and staff at Bethnal Green Technology College ran, rowed and cycled a total of 4,000 miles – the distance from London to Kampala in Uganda – without leaving the grounds of their school. The combined effort was in aid of two charities – Promoting Equality in African Schools, which builds schools in Uganda and helps to improve access to education, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Teams of pupils and staff put in the miles on running, rowing and cycling machines in the school gym. Pupil Ezekiel was one of the most dedicated. Having already covered 125 miles, he helped the school across the finish line on a gym bike on the final day of term, armed with an RNLI donations box on the handlebars of his gym bike and a bright yellow jersey adorned with messages.
