April 2019 #160
On Thursday 11th April 2019 we were excited to welcome our Year 6 students to our two-day Easter School, designed to give them a taste of what life at the academy will be like when they join us in September.

“My favourite lesson was food tech because it teaches us how to cook. I would definitely recommend it. A big thumbs up from me” George
Ms Howe’s food technology lessons taught students the skills to do some cooking for themselves as well as some knowledge of food hygiene. On day one they baked delicious vanilla cupcakes. Working together in small groups, they mixed all the ingredients together and divided it into the cake tins. They then did the washing up and put everything away whilst waiting for their cakes to bake! On Friday, delicious pizza was on the menu!
Creative learning! In design technology students made keyrings using perspex. They learned how to use new equipment safely, such as saws, clamps and files.

“I liked this because it was fun and we got to explore different things and use different tools to make our keyrings” Maggie
Sports skills sessions
“I liked sports because it was fun and it was nice to run around and be with my new friends ” Sarah
Number crunching!
In Mr Rahman’s PE class students played football, table tennis and badminton. They worked really well together in teams or pairs and they enjoyed getting to know new friends whilst learning some sports skills!
“I liked PE because I had lots of fun with my friends and food tech because even though we made a mistake our cakes were really good” Zahira
In Mr Chu’s maths class students completed an investigation to determine probabilities. By rolling two dice at once they needed to work out which number they would most likely get.
“I liked this activity the most because usually I am bad at sports but they taught me how and I enjoyed playing with others that I don’t know.” Khadeja
Lyrical lessons Mr Messam began his creative writing class by reading some of his own poetry to give examples of expressive vocabulary. Students listened intently and enjoyed his storytelling. Once their ideas were flowing they put pen to paper to write their own verse and produced some imaginative and creative work.
