Word on the Street The Newsletter of Green Spring Academy SHOREDITCH and Sixth Form

GSAS students win TeenTech Awards! On Monday 26th June 2017, three teams from Green Spring Academy Shoreditch took part in the national TeenTech final, beating 2,000 teens to compete against the last 63 projects and 143 TeenTech finalists. Our students spent four hours pitching their ideas, and answering very tough questions from industry experts and celebrity judges. Just a few weeks after learning that they had made it to the finals, two projects were announced as winners in their categories. Winning project ‘Sensorship’ was based on monitoring fishing vessels and the group won the top prize of £1,000. Joint winners in their category was ‘Snowdrop Chewing Gum’, which was based on dissoluble chewing gum. Our third project ‘Holograms’ didn’t win, but represented themselves and the school fantastically. The winning teams will visit Buckingham Palace to meet HRH Duke of York KG and receive their prize fund in the autumn term. The students involved were: SensorShip (Winners) - Saima Rahman, Dhansere Reza , Thamina Islam Snowdrop Chewing Gum (Joint Winners) - Siddiqa Anjuma, Aarifa Islam, Faria Hoque Holograms - Jawad Bakar, Junaid Mohamed, Abdul Tahseen

GSAS Goes Green for Grenfell

Count on us Semi-finals

On Friday 23rd June 2017, the academy participated in the ‘Go Green for Grenfell’ initiative to show solidarity for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. Students and staff donated £1 to wear a green item of clothing or a green ribbon to symbolise their support. There was also a staff netball match to raise money for Grenfell. The academy raised over £150.00 from this one event and all monies raised will be donated to the Kensington Aldridge Community via the Just Giving website. The fundraising page was set up by Haley Yearwood, a teacher at a local secondary school, who hopes to raise £2,000,000 to help the families affected. Thank you to all our students and staff for supporting such a worthy cause.

Following on from the success of the Count on Us Maths Challenge in March 2017 GSAS students took part in the next stage of the competition. The London semi-finals was held at City Hall on Thursday 15th June 2017. Students competed in 4 rounds. First was a competitive game of Hex, then they competed in a geometric reasoning challenge. In the third round they competed individually in rounds of the game 24 before finally taking part in a code breaking algebra round where their ability to deploy a Caesar cipher was tested. The students demonstrated their mental arithmetic and problem solving skills were a force to be reckoned with successfully making it through to the finals on 4th July.

World Book Week at GSAS Community Walk

GSAS General Election

On Thursday 8th June 2017, students in Years 7-10, will be involved in GSAS’s very own General Election to support student engagement with the political process. This is one of the most important General Elections of our time involving huge issues that permeate our everyday lives. Students will be issued with a ballot card each and given the opportunity to cast a vote on which party they would like to see in charge of the country for the next 5 years; mimicking the real life event. All in all, the GSAS General Election 2017 is set to be a stimulating and thrilling event.

On Wednesday 7th June 2017 a group of ten students walked around the local area, between Bethnal Green and London Fields, making notes and taking photographs of different aspects of the environment they felt concerned about. These ranged from graffiti and litter to broken doors and damaged pavements. They planned the route of the walk and completed a survey on how to improve the environment for their local community. The group will use their findings to write a letter to the council to put forward some potential solutions.

GSAS talks politics

McKinsey Cricket Tournament

On Wednesday 14th June, the academy was privileged to host another event within the Tea Time Talk series entitled: ‘A General Election Special: Careers in government and politics’. Students were joined by a Senior Advisor in the Prime Minister’s Implementation Unit, a local councillor and a Parliamentary Recorder from Hansard. Together they discussed the recent general election results; career pathways into these coveted political roles; and offered advice on subject choices and university options. This was a rare and wonderful opportunity for all students to meet high profile individuals from the world of government and politics and hear realistic and practical advice from someone in the know.

On Thursday 22nd June 2017, the academy’s senior cricket team competed in the McKinsey Cricket Tournament. Our team played three games, winning two and losing one. The McKinsey cup is an 8-a-side limited over tournament in which every player must bowl at least one over. It was therefore very much a team effort and highlights included a maiden/wicket over from Huzaifuh Hossain; a superb wicket (bowled) for our youngest player, Jubed Kamli; and in the final game, three players scored 20 runs or more – Samin Yasar, Yash Parsottoam and Faizal Thoppayil. Well done to all involved.

Eton friendly cricket fixture

Next Issue.....

Special Issue

On Thursday 15th June our senior cricket team travelled to Eton College to play a friendly cricket fixture. This is the fourth year in a row this trip has taken place and it is always one the highlights of the sporting calendar. Spending the day at Eton is a unique and memorable experience for our students, who got to see some of the vast facilities and mix with their staff and students. Unfortunately we lost the fixture. However, we can take some positives from the day as we bowled and fielded well, restricting them to just 3 boundaries. Man of the match was Atik Hussain who contributed to 6 run outs, which was a spectacular achievement.
