Check Mate International Master visits BGTC Chess Club Ms. Emmanuel’s Chess Club had a very special guest a couple of weeks ago, International Master, Arlette van Weersel. Our young players were given some expert tuition as they all played against her at the same time! It was a hard fought battle. Arlette did win all 8 games, but was impressed with the standard of play on show. To show the students how well they had done, Arlette then managed to beat Mr. Claydon with her back to the table, working from memory alone! Sorry Sir!

BGTC has 3 acts in this year’s Borough Finals of the XLP Arts Showcase. Be sure to make your way down to the Toynbee Theatre, Commercial Street, E1 and support our talented performers. We have a great chance of getting through to the National Finals and retaining the title Premature won last year! The early bird...
Early entry exams success As the banner at the start of the newsletter says, BGTC is officially the 3rd most improved school in London and the 14th most improved school in England between 2007-2010. They are fantastic statistics that we are very proud of but what do they really mean? Well, here’s an example. This year our GCSE students opted to take some of their exams early. Like the early bird, they most definitely caught the worm (so to speak). Over 71% of the year group now already have an A*-C grade in English! It is through the hard work, excellent learning and teaching, clear boundaries and high expectations that exists between our students and staff that makes these achievements possible. To think, it’s only January and there’s so much to celebrate already. Well done Class of 2011. Keep up the hard work and I’m sure we will be celebrating again in the summer!
Bonjour Students chat with school in France, in French! Last Thursday, a group of Key Stage 3 students; Hasan, Suhail, Francis, Emdadul and Josh in Year 9 as well as Junior, Yazid and Zubair in Year 8 took part in a French conversational class with a group of students from a school in Paris. Using the video conferencing suite on the 38th floor of the HSBC tower in Canary Wharf, our students had a go at talking with our Parisian counterparts about what they like to do in their spare time. Well done everyone, your French was tres bien!
