Feet first Walk to School Week: Special Edition 1 of 2 Next week is national Walk to School Week. The main aim of the project is fairly obvious; to encourage more students and staff to walk to school and to explore the health benefits of doing so. We will also be looking at our current school statistics regarding how we all travel to school and what we can do to get more of you putting one foot in front of the other every morning.

How do we get to school? 1) What percentage of students at BGTC walk to and/or home from school? Answer: 39%. The average distance walked is just 800m. That said, 82% of students do NOT attend their nearest school. 2) How many thousands of kilograms of CO2 do you think we emit as a school each year? Answer: 46,000kg of CO2. The lowest was St. Paul’s Way with 10,000kg and the school with the biggest balloon of pollution was Bishop Challoner with a massive 120,000kg. 3) What percentage of students do you think cycle to school? Just 0.8% of students cycle to school in the mornings. No wonder all those bike racks are so empty!
