Day at the races - students visit Ascot race course. To reward their excellent efforts and behaviour in Maths lessons this term, 22 lucky students from Years 7 and 8 went on a day trip to Ascot racecourse the Friday before last. All dressed in their racing colours, or silks as they’re known, our magic mathematicians used what they had learned this term to calculate the minimum and maximum weight of a jockey. They also found out about the different uses of metals in a jockey’s kit and even managed to work out how many horses can fit inside the parade ring. The trip was then capped off in style as everyone watched the first race of the day from the side of the track. It was “a fantastic experience.”

A special thank you to Eddie our Premises Manager who wins our coveted “Education Moustache Award for Outstanding Progress!” His handlebar was excellent and he even took the time to make a donation box to raise money too. Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Bethnal Green performs at Shakespeare Schools Festival A few months ago we put out an advert in our newsletter calling for budding actors to represent the school at this year’s Shakespeare Schools Festival. Our committed cast came together under the watchful eye of Ms. Gill (Director) and many late night rehearsals later their hard work paid off as the school was invited to perform Romeo & Juliet at the impressive Unicorn Theatre, Southwark. As you can see from some of the photos (left) it was a very professional production and the students and staff that went along to watch said it really way amazing. A few, choice exerts will be performed during assemblies in the lead up to the end of term. We hope you enjoy them. Congratulations to everyone involved. You are all very committed and extremely talented. Break a leg! For more information about the Shakespeare Schools Festival, visit www.ssf.uk.com and keep an eye out for photos from the production on our website soon. Continuing with the Shakespearean theme - if you would like to learn more about the bard and his plays here’s a date for your diary. The British Museum, as part of the London 2012 Festival, has a new exhibition, Shakespeare: Staging the World opening in July. I know it’s a long way off but it’s well worth looking forward too, especially if you weren’t one of the lucky few to get Olympic tickets!

The planners are also a good way of monitoring progress. Each week students have the opportunity to reflect on what went well and what they could do to improve their own learning. How do I arrange a meeting with my child’s teachers? Our teachers are more than happy to meet with parents at a time that suits you. Simply call our reception (02079207900) or fill in the Parent Helpline form online.

What are the school’s expectations regarding homework?
Food Technology Fahima Aktar
Homework is set on a weekly basis in Years 10 and 11, totalling approximately 40-60 minutes per subject per week. Teachers log the homework set on the school website. We also encourage students to revisit topics ahead of their exams and offer a range of extra-curricular revision classes all year round. How can I find information about extracurricular activities at the school? Again, we have an online calendar on the Students page of the school website. There are at least half a dozen clubs and sports activities running every day at Bethnal Green. There is also a big screen TV in the school that students can refer to. How can I make suggestions to the school about how to improve certain areas? We value your input. You can either visit the Parents page of our website and fill in the Parent Helpline form and soon you will be able to pop in and post a suggestion in our very own letter box. What should I be checking in my child’s planner? Students planners are used to record homework tasks (also logged online), as a means of communicating with your child’s tutor, and to schedule extra-curricular activities so that you know if your child is staying late after school for
