Student Leadership Introducing our new Student Reporters Columbia Primary Visit Merit Top 20

Issue #94 - Monday 12 December 2011

End of a Century... Welcome to Issue #94! It’s the end of a calendar year and we’re fast approaching 100 issues since I started writing our school newsletter back in 2008. What better time to introduce some new members of our news team, some new features and of course, when we return in January we will be Bethnal Green Academy. Season’s greetings everyone. See you in the new year.

Cover story

Psychology students visit Columbia Primary. A group of our keen and inquisitive GCSE Psychologists visited Columbia Primary last week to explore the students’ understanding of gender and how it is defined. Stereotyping and gender “roles” are engrained at an early age. Ask yourself, “Who is more likely to be a footballer?” How about a doctor or a teacher? Who does the housework? Are we defined by who we are or what we do?

Team Voice: Council Members

Sounds complicated but it’s something we respond to at a very early age. Our primary school volunteers explored identity through a range of games including decorating masks and gingerbread men and gave our students a valuable insight into perception and child development. Thank you to Miss Clark and everyone at Columbia Primary. I’m sure you would have explained it better than me!

What’s in a name?

BGTC becomes Bethnal Green Academy. As I am sure you are aware, from January Bethnal Green Technology College (BGTC) will become Bethnal Green Academy. In the short term, it’s business as usual but there are lots of fantastic opportunities ahead including the design of our new school badge, ready for September. We want to see your creative ideas and will be running a range of activities and competitions to come up with our new logo in the new year. Students, staff, parents and carers, we would love for you to all share your ideas with us. Watch this space!

Word of the week.

Dot dot dot... Website sneak preview. An early reminder to students, parents and staff that from January we will be migrating to a new web and email address to reflect our Academy status. From the new year, our website www.bethnalgreenacademy.co.uk will go live but don’t worry, our existing site as well as our email addresses will all remain active for the remainder of the academic year to ensure a smooth transition.

valid adjective (of an argument or point) having a sound basis in logic or fact; reasonable or cogent: a valid criticism.

Our Word of the week is sourced from our Focus Words list which is compiled by our teaching staff and is designed to include the sort of keywords, terms and phrases regularly used in their subject areas. The full list, complete with dictionary definition hyperlinks can be found on the Students page of our website.

Riddle me this...

Mr. Pedley’s Puzzle Page is back. We end the term with a puzzle that looks like a crossword but you fill it with numbers. A crossnumber? Whatever you want to call it, it’s never as simple as it appears.
