Welcome to issue #97.
Weekly news from Bethnal Green Academy. Welcome to the last issue for this half term. We’ve got a lot to squeeze into just two pages so...
Head to Head.
Practice interview event. Last week our Key Stage 4 students got the chance to brush up on their interview skills with visiting professionals from the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership (www.thebp.org). It was a great opportunity for our older students who are currently applying for college places and soon to apply for university or their first jobs, to build their confidence and gain some valuable experience of interview questioning under their belts. The organisers were incredibly impressed with how polite and well prepared our students were. Well done everyone. We hope it wasn’t too nerve-racking!

Safety net. Safer Internet Day 2012
Issue #97 - Monday 6 February 2012
Safer Internet Day (SID) is organised by Insafe in February of each year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world. Visit www.saferinternetday.org and look out for more info during tutor time and assemblies this week.
Word of the week. variable noun an element, feature of factor that is liable to vary of change: (in Science) there are too many variables involved to make an accurate prediction.
Leading the way. Our Sixth Form working group. On Tuesday a team of Year 11 students met at Allen & Overy as part of our Sixth Form Working Party. They discussed lots of really important issues such as dress code, preparing for Year 12, finance, progression to university and volunteering. The group then presented their ideas to three senior staff from our partner law firm (two of whom are also school governors). The group decided that students at our Sixth Form should wear smart business dress as this will create the best environment for learning. They thought that everybody should give back to the community by volunteering every week and helping other students. They also agreed on the terms of Bethnal Green’s Post-16 incentive, "Earn While You Learn" scheme where students can earn up to £30 each week for having good attendance, being on track in their subjects and volunteering regularly. For more information, visit the Sixth Form page on our website.

Your weekly book review. Every week, Student Reporter, Ciaran interviews a fellow Book Club member about a book they have read. This week, Raveena discusses Mr. Stink by David Walliams. Mr. Stink is a funny tale about a young girl who shares her thoughts and feelings with a tramp on the street. Most kids may look at the cover and think, “Wow! This book looks so cool!” Others, like me, might say, “This book looks so babyish.” Despite not liking how it looked, I read the blurb. It sounded great, I decided to read it and I thought it was outstanding. My mind went nuts as it instantly inspired me to write my own stories and become a writer when I’m older. What can I say, never judge a book by the cover.
Now we’re cooking! Staff and students’ cook-off. Look out Masterchef, there’s a new culinary competition in town! On Friday, students and staff paired themselves into teams and had just one hour to slice, dice, sear, fry and flambé (maybe not flambé) their way into our judges hearts and stomachs! Reece and Mr. Bowers took first prize with their Stuffed Butterfly Chicken with Squash Purée. Many more mouthwatering photos from the event are online now.
I really liked how realistic the book was (trust me, it’s cool) because the writer, David Walliams, didn’t only use made up characters (10 Downing Street features in it). I also liked the idea that a young girl, whose mother hates poor people and acts like she’s the Queen, managed to become good friends with a tramp! I would honestly recommend this book to anyone. You’d love to hear about Mr. Stink and Chloe’s adventures. 10 out of 10. Book Club runs every Tuesday lunchtime in the LRC.

Wheelie Good! This is a great tutor time activity. How many words can you make from the letters in the wheel? The only rule is, each word must use the centre letter. Aim for 20 words and there is at least one, 9 letter word to be found!
Keep an eye out for extra word and number puzzles in the bottom left corner of your diary each week.
