BETH TFILOH בית תפלה
“What if you throw a party and nobody shows up?” That’s an oft-expressed concern. And we at Beth Tfiloh are feeling it these days. These days are troubling ones. Virus, masks, vaccines… we all thought we would be getting past this by now. But here we are, never knowing from day to day what the news is going to bring. And here we are at Beth Tfiloh, ready to throw a party celebrating our centennial anniversary, but never knowing who is going to show up! I hope YOU will! We have got quite a year planned, starting with four Wednesday evening programs featuring my conversations with Sen. Ben Cardin, Rev. Terris King, Dr. Daniel Gordis and our own Rabbi Chai Posner and Dr. Zipora Schorr. They are going to be presented LIVE! Will YOU be there? I hope YOU will! On Thanksgiving weekend we will share in the nachas of some of the accomplished graduates Beth Tfiloh has produced. Will YOU be there? I hope YOU will!

During this past year, we have learned that Zoom is the “next best thing to being there.” Next best thing … BUT NOT THE SAME. The best you can do on Zoom is to watch from afar while others are living in the moment. On Zoom you’re a spectator; in person you are a participant. Beth Tfiloh has been the marvelous congregation that it is for 100 years because countless people participated in our services, classes and joined with each other in sharing moments of joy and moments of sorrow. A congregation is not a structure; it is YOU. YOU are what makes Beth Tfiloh what it is. We hope to see YOU this year. The last year has been a year in which hundreds of thousands of people have suffered losses due to a plague that we still have not overcome. So let us resolve to do whatever we can, to wear whatever masks we may have to wear, to take whatever vaccine we need to take, so that this coming year can be a year spent together in good health and joy.

Presenter: Chana Slavaticki
Presenters: Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg, Dr. Zipora Schorr, and Rabbi Chai Posner
Meet the complex and colorful personalities whose stories are described in the books of Yehoshua (Joshua), Shoftim (Judges) and Shmuel (Samuel) and answer questions such as: What made Yehoshua an outstanding leader? Was Rachav pious or practical? How could Yiftach sacrifice his own daughter? What was the secret to Shimshon’s strength? We will use the text and commentaries to uncover the underlying motives of these figures and others, explore the consequences of the choices they made, and identify relevant messages for our lives today.
As we enter Beth Tfiloh’s historic centennial year, we will reflect on the name’s literal meaning: A House of Prayer. We will explore topics in tefila and what it means for us individually and collectively. What are the mechanics of prayer? Do our prayers really make a difference? How can we find personal relevance in the words of the siddur? This course will help you tap into your deepest self and touch your heart and soul.

Centennial Updates: A Roadmap for Our BT Community’s Future Beth Tfiloh’s approaching centennial year provides our community the opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments while drafting the blueprints for building our future. This opportunity will be one that involves many exciting changes, including improvements to our building and the introduction of several new and accomplished staff members, as well as several well-earned transitions for some of Beth Tfiloh’s brightest lights.
Building Enhancements and Renovations
This summer, the hallway surrounding the Fader Courtyard was renovated in preparation for a museum-caliber multimedia timeline to be installed between the Tuvin and Hurwitz Hall. The timeline, which will be unveiled this fall, will feature a comprehensive recap of Beth Tfiloh’s history, with new digital content updated over the course of the year and a companion website. This renovation also completes the earlier remodeling of the synagogue lobby for a consistently beautiful environment. Several prominent architectural firms were invited to submit proposals for creative ways to make the Dahan Sanctuary’s space more intimate, allowing for a more meaningful and personal davening experience. The winning proposal will be selected this fall. Special thanks to our members Uri Avin, director of University of Maryland’s Center for Planning and Design, and Cass Gottlieb, principal at Waldon Studio Architects, for sharing their talents and experience with our BT community as they spearhead this momentous initiative.
Holy Days. For the next four years, he will serve as an invaluable resource for our clergy and community as a whole as he remains in Baltimore with his wife, children, and grandchildren. In his own words, “There’s no place else I’d rather be – Beth Tfiloh is my home!” Our beloved hazzan, Avi Albrecht, will take his final bow at Beth Tfiloh in December 2022, after an exceptional Hazzan Avi Albrecht 26-year tenure. A true Beth Tfiloh icon, he is loved by the Beth Tfiloh family for his personal warmth, his rich baritone voice, his musical creativity, and his inspiring spirituality. Following the High Holy Days, we will form a search committee to determine what our next cantorial role will look like.
Staff Transitions
Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg

Talia, her husband Aaron, and their two-year-old son, Levi, are extremely excited to join the BT community. “I can already tell that BT is a special community, and we have received such a heartwarming welcome from everyone we’ve met,” Talia said. “I think BT is a unique opportunity to be part of a Modern Orthodox environment that places Jewish values at the forefront and welcomes every Jew with open arms. That’s what makes me so excited to join the BT team.” Shani and Matan Shefler, who come to us from Efrat, Israel, will proudly serve as our Israeli shlichim for the next two years. Shani Rotem-Shefler most recently served as director of the Child Development Unit in a private clinic that she owns, providing speech therapy services and parental guidance for a diverse population of children. She holds a B.A. in speech and language pathology from Hadassah College, and a master’s degree Talia Jordan with her family
