Introduction
NL Wat hebben Tito, Ceaus¸escu, Idi Amin Dada, Assad en Mitt Romney met elkaar gemeen? Wat is de toekomst van Brussel? Welke plaatjes moeten Brusselse politici draaien om jou aan het dansen te krijgen? Wat heeft Breivik tegen Europa? En hoe populistisch ben jij? Vanaf februari ben je welkom tijdens het focusprogramma dat luistert naar de naam Politricks. A programme on power, propaganda, populism & patriotism. Aan de hand van performances, theatervoorstellingen, films, debatten, installaties, video’s en schilderijen trachten we iets te vertellen over politiek, macht, mediamanipulatie, de kracht van het beeld en houden daarbij de verkiezingen van mei 2014 in ons achterhoofd. Hoewel het programma van Politricks politieke tendensen bespreekbaar maakt, is het ‘programma an sich’ niet politiek. Het gaat in eerste instantie om een artistiek project. We nodigen kunstenaars uit die een bepaald engagement hebben of een kritisch standpunt innemen. Kunstenaars met een kritisch discours over politiek, kunstenaars die prediken om niet gewoon achter de vlag te lopen, door scherp uit de hoek te komen als het gaat over hoe we met zijn allen door de media gemanipuleerd worden. Artistiek werk dat uitnodigt om vervlakking tegen te gaan.
Politricks is een poging om – via een focusprogramma – mensen aan het nadenken te zetten over het politieke spel. Twee maanden lang ben je bij ons welkom om je te wapenen tegen de verkiezingen in mei. Goed burgerschap is voorbereid burgerschap! Dans quelle mesure n’êtesvous pas un peu populiste ? À partir de février, nous vous invitons tous à notre nouveau programme thématique intitulé Politricks. A programme on power, propaganda, populism & patriotism. Au moyen de spectacles, de représentations théâtrales, de films, de débats, d’expositions, de projections vidéo et de peintures, nous essaierons de vous parler de politique, d’autorité, de la manipulation des médias et de la force de l’image, en replaçant le tout dans la perspective des prochaines élections de mai 2014. Bien que le programme de Politricks suscite le débat sur les orientations politiques, le programme n’est en soi pas politique. Il s’agit en première instance d’un projet artistique. Nous lançons un appel aux artistes ayant un engagement marqué ou un point de vue critique sur la question. Les artistes qui se montrent critiques sur la politique, les artistes prêchant le non-conformisme, voire la révolte, les artistes qui invitent la population à se faire entendre, à se rebeller contre la façon dont les médias nous mani11

What does Breivik have against Europe? And how populist are you? From February, everyone is invited to a new focus programme entitled Politricks. A programme on power, propaganda, populism & patriotism. Via performances, theatre, films, debates, installations, videos and paintings we endeavour to say something about politics, media manipulation, the power of the image, while keeping the May 2014 elections in mind. Although the programme of Politricks allows for political trends to be addressed, the programme in itself is apolitical, as it is, above all, an artistic project. We invite artists with a specific commitment or who adopt a critical stance. Artists who pass judgment on politics, artists who urge us not to display herd mentality but stand up for our beliefs when it comes to how we are all manipulated by the media. Er moet opgetreden worden, barrières – zowel fysieke als mentale – moeten opnieuw opgebouwd worden. Martin Schick en Damir Todorović onderzoeken daarvoor de mechanismes van macht en verleiding in onze Westerse samenleving. Of simpeler gezegd: over schoonheid, luxe en hoe die te behouden.

NL In 1993 werd Damir Todorović, tegen zijn wil, als soldaat naar de oorlog in Bosnië gestuurd. Aan de hand van een leugendetektor onderwerpt actrice Pauline Goldschmidt Todorović aan vragen, gebaseerd op het dagboek dat hij tijdens de oorlog bijhield. Is het mogelijk om op die manier te achterhalen wat daar werkelijk gebeurd is? As It Is onderzoekt de begrippen ‘echt’ en ‘vals’, hete hangijzers in Europese transitielanden die geconfronteerd worden met identiteitscrisis. As it is gaat over acteren in het dagelijks leven, waarheid en fictie, authenticiteit en totalitarisme. Een performance die vragen oproept: Kunnen we leven zonder leugens? Zo ja, is dit wenselijk?

The Serbian artist Damir Todorović wants to confront his past, hooked up to a lie detector. Did certain things really happen, or are they just a product of his imagination?

EN In January 1993 Damir Todorović was sent as a soldier to the war in Bosnia. Is it possible to figure out what really happened there by using a polygraph? The lie detector measures Damir’s reactions to the questions he is asked by Pauline Goldsmith, relating to the diary Damir wrote during the war. As It Is examines the categories of true and false as important social issues, especially in European transition countries facing identity crises. It is about acting in everyday life, truth and fiction, authenticity and totalitarianism. It is a performance that provokes the questions: Can we live without lies? If so, is this desirable?

Katja Dreyer pilots the audience through a century of German history – from WWI until now – through the eyes of a woman. A woman who is 38 years old in 1913, in 1923, in 1933, in 1943, in 1953 … until 2013. NL Katja Dreyer stond eerder al in Beursschouwburg met haar solodebuut Ueberflieger. Voor haar nieuwe voorstelling Kroniek vertrekt ze van de Traumland, een binnenvaartschip uit Berlijn dat nu in Mechelen voor anker ligt en dat dit jaar exact 100 jaar oud is. Dreyer verpersoonlijkt verschillende 20
generaties vrouwen, die telkens 38 jaar oud zijn, en die allemaal op gelinkt zijn aan het verhaal van de Traumland. Een duik in de bewogen Duitse geschiedenis, waarin feit en fictie, het alledaagse en het historische voortdurend in elkaar overlopen. Pour son nouveau spectacle Kroniek (chronique), elle part du Traumland, une péniche de Berlin qui est désormais ancrée à Malines et qui a exactement 100 ans cette année. The project The Moscow Trials resumes the history of the dispute between artists and orthodox believers – in the form of political theatre. NL De beelden van het Pussy Riot-proces lokten in 2012 wereldwijd verontwaardiging uit. In Rusland zelf werd het echter afgedaan als een ‘typisch’ voorbeeld van de onderdrukking van zogenaamd dissidente kunst in het Rusland van Poetin. In maart 2013 thematiseerde Milo Rau, de Zwitserse oprichter van het International Institute of Political Murder, dit onderwerp aan de hand van politiek theater: in het Zacharov Centrum in Moskou werd een rechtbank ingericht als podium voor een drie dagen durend showproces. Rau bracht ‘acteurs’ uit het echte leven (kunstenaars, politici, kerkleiders, burgers en advocaten) samen in een fictieve rechtbank: kunst versus religie, ‘dissident’ Rusland versus het ‘echte’ Rusland. Het resultaat was een ‘processhow’, waarin de rol en de grenzen van kritische kunst bepleit worden. 31

Even though the artists who take part in the Politricks exhibition do not fight on the barricades, nor do they adopt outspoken political positions, they still try to be critical of current or historical political situations in a subtle, reflective or humorous way. With ethical-political commitment, they pore over the regimes of political leaders, dictators and demagogues. They use videos, installations and paintings to scrutinise the images and representations of heads of state and power structures, whether using imagery which political leaders disseminate or not.

Benj Gerdes (VS) and Mark Wallinger (UK) use television footage of crucial speeches of George Bush and Margaret Thatcher as starting material. By reas-
sembling the material, heads of state are exposed, as it were, and their bodies – seemingly devoid of content – are staged in a silent choreography. As graphic designers, Ghalia Elskrabi (SY) and Lauren Alexander (ZA) (the artist duo Foundland) visually dissect Bashar al-Assad’s pro-regime propaganda, analysing, as they do, the manipulated images which the Syrian Electronic Army propagates to Assad’s greater honour and glory. 37

Marijke de Roover (BE) goes the extra mile, musically speaking, and presents a brand new, absurd musical in which five women vie for a place in the harem of former American presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Finally, Annie Kevans (UK) shows a series of delicate and disturbing paintings of seemingly innocent boys. On closer inspection, they appear to be the youthful depictions of dictators. Stalin, Mugabe, Ceausescu etc. look into the camera, wide-eyed, as if they still want to convince us of their innocence.
