Introduction When I first started writing this book, I thought “wouldn’t it be great to have one place where I could find resources, ideas, games mixed in with the theory and reference checklists.” I looked around and could see that it is out there but not in one place. So for the teacher, pre-school worker or parent, they would have to know where to look. However, after 24 years of experience, I decided to put this information all in one up-to date book. My advice to anyone using this book is to go through each step in turn. Don’t feel that you have to rush through to the next stage if the child is not ready. I would say that repetition is essential, even if you can only manage 5-10 minutes every day in a quiet room, without any visual or auditory distractions. Turn the television and radio off and help your child to focus. If your child has problems with his/her attention, start with short sessions, use a reward chart, give a reward and slowly increase the session length. I have included a reward chart on page 26. The most important advice I can give you is to have fun and stop when the child shows signs of boredom or tiredness. I feel honoured that you have taken time to read this and take the first step in helping this child to communicate clearly and be confident in speaking out.

Types of Sounds MAKING IT FUN When you are teaching sounds to children, it is important to make it fun by giving the sounds funny names/labels. Using pictures with the sound gives the child a visual as well is an auditory cue. I also use gestural cues such as Cued Articulation (devised by Jane Passey) . If you do an online course there will be a demonstration of these cues . The cards on the next page gives you the names of the sounds along side of the pictorial queue. I would recommend that these are copied, cut out and laminated for future use. The child will need to know where the different parts of his/her mouth is. So it would be a good idea to ask them to find the following and ask the following questions: Can you find your lips? Where is you tongue? Can you touch the tip of your tongue? Where is the back of your tongue? Can you point to your top teeth? Can you find your bottom teeth? Can you find the back of your tongue? Can you put the front of your tongue behind your top teeth? Can you touch your voice box? If the child cannot do any of these things, then you can show them by demonstrating yourself. Then using a clean metal teaspoon, show them where the different parts are in their mouth when you ask the questions again. Then the child has to be able to work out when their voice is on and off. This is done by asking the child to place their fingers on their voice box. Ask them to say ‘p’ and ask them if the voice box vibrated or shook. It shouldn’t for ‘p’ but when you ask them to do it for ‘b’, then the voice box should vibrate. 5

CONVERSATION TOPICS I really like this idea that you can use yourself as a parent, teacher or newly qualified speech therapist… a jar of conversation topics. This could be done over family dinner times or as a 5 minute filler in between lessons or sim-ply in your clinic. I cannot take credit for this idea but you could print this picture below and place it in a jar. Idea taken from http://tinyurl.com/jktofeq

Acknowledgements Writing this book has been a long process with my ultimate aim was to empower parents , teachers and newly qualified speech therapists/pathologists to be more confident with developing clear speech in the children they see. I hope I have done that but I want to thank one person for his encouragement and support and that is my loving husband, Adam. I also would like to thank my clever web designers , Hiren Moraniya and Dipesh Parmar who work in India, tirelessly meeting my specific needs and requests. Thank you for your creativity and patience and many alterations! I would also like to thank Louise Glover, a dedicated mum and exceptional teacher for taking time from her busy schedule to proof-read my manuscript for this book. And to my parents, Alda and Orlando Figueiredo and my parents-in-law, Robin and Margaret Jessup, whose unwavering support and belief in me even through the messy times is a miracle! Finally, I would like to thank all those clients and parents I have seen over the years (too many to name) who have afforded me the privilege of trying out parts of this book on them. I hope that you will take time to visit my website: www.speechtherapycourses4allonline.com. If you have any questions, please email me on speechtherapycourseonline@gmail.com
