Hello! Welcome to our third edition of The Grafton Press and wow, are we proud of this one! Since launching last year we’ve learned so much more about the fabulous people and places here in Cambridge and we’re thrilled to be able to bring you a curated glimpse of just some of those stories. We’ve worked with guest writer Ruthie Collins from The Cambridge Arts Salon who has interviewed her friend and our cover star Dr Critchlow. We’ve also worked with bloggers Sophie Kate and Sian, as well as Charlotte from The Thrifty Fashion Mum to bring you the latest news and views. There’s fashion and beauty news, plus a great interview with John O’Shea, Centre Manager at The Grafton on the latest news from the centre. We hope you enjoy reading this edition as much as we enjoyed writing it and if you have any stories for our autumn edition do please get in touch by emailing editor@thegrafton.co.uk.

Coffee & a chat... with John O’Shea
It’s been a busy 12 months for John O’Shea. In March 2017, he was appointed new Centre Manager of The Grafton and has been the man at the helm as the centre continues to undergo significant changes. We managed to get some time in John’s very busy diary, so we could grab a coffee in the new larger Costa Coffee, and have a chat with the man responsible for overseeing the multi-millionpound redevelopment as well as the day-to-day running of the busy Cambridge shopping centre. We looked back at his first year, towards the future and got the inside info on what’s in-store for The Grafton – including the exclusive reveal of the first exciting name coming to Food Social – the centre’s new Food Quarter. With new openings aplenty and phases of the development set to be finished, it’s all go at The Grafton. “It’s been non-stop and full-on but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” said John when we asked him to reflect on his first year at the helm. “I can’t quite believe that I’ve been here a year already, the time has just flown by.” In-between sips of coffee we asked John to pick some highlights of his first year in charge at the centre, and a few automatically sprung to mind for him. “The opening of the new Fitzroy Street entrance was fantastic,” said John. “It really demonstrates just how dramatic the change to the centre will be once it’s finished, and you could feel the excitement build for that moment across the city. As that was completed, we welcomed Decathlon to the centre and the store has already become a firm
favourite with shoppers. The launch itself was the most successful opening ever for the company so that was a real highlight, especially as it happened within my first six months here.” Alongside the new openings and additions to The Grafton – including the aforementioned Decathlon, H&M Home and a new and improved Costa Coffee – it’s clear that helping the wider community has been very important to John over the last year. “As the development progressed, we had to close our soft play area purely due to the location of it. We didn’t want any of what was in there to go to waste so we donated everything to Granta School in Linton – a local school that focusses on helping disabled children across the county. “We then followed that up by partnering with Heart FM for the eleventh year in a row for our Giving Tree. The campaign has always been popular, but Christmas 2017 was remarkable. More than 8,000 gifts were donated, and I can’t thank the people of Cambridge enough. Alongside that we’ve welcomed 72 charities to the centre over the last year and I’m looking forward to continuing that trend over the coming twelve months.”

“Independent food vendor Amélie will be opening in the not too distant future and I’m sure it’s going to prove extremely popular.”
With the coffee cups both looking a lot emptier than they were 10 minutes ago, and the interview drawing to a close, we asked John what the future held for the centre over the next year.
John O’Shea Centre Manager
“It’s a really exciting time right now,” said John. “We’re well into phase two of the development works and they are set to be complete around early to mid-summer. At that stage we’ll be handing the keys of a new unit over to PureGym. That will be a fantastic addition to the centre and is set to open in autumn of this year.”
Issue 03
Before wrapping up our chat with John, we pressed him on the impending opening of the Food Social. “That’s a huge part of phase two,” said John, “and I’m delighted to announce that we’ve got our first new food outlet confirmed. Independent food vendor Amélie will be opening in the not too distant future and I’m sure it’s going to prove extremely popular. “We’ve got plenty going on in the background to bring even more new names to the centre and by the next edition of The Grafton Press, Food Social should be up and running. I’m looking forward to telling you more next time we have a chat.” And on that note, we let John get back to the business of running a very busy shopping centre.

Our exclusive interview with Dr Hannah Critchlow Dr Hannah Critchlow is set to become the wondergirl of science in the UK, with the launch of her first book, Consciousness: A Ladybird Expert book, at the Hay Festival this summer. Hannah took some time out to talk to Ruthie Collins, exclusively for The Grafton Press.
You may know her in the city from her time living here, or her time at Magdalene College where she gained her PhD in Neuropsychiatry. Dubbed the ‘female Brian Cox’ by the Telegraph in 2015, together with the likes of co-presenter of Tomorrow’s World Live Jen Gupta she’s quickly proving that women in science are fast blazing a trail of their very own and need no comparisons with their male counterparts.
Tell us about your upcoming book, Hannah. It’s Consciousness: A Ladybird Expert book. My background is neuropsychiatry and I’m fascinated by how 1.5 kg of brain tissue mass magically produces our individual view of the world, our myriad emotions, memories, associations and thoughts that make each of our lives unique. Advances in neurosciences mean we can now start to get to grips with understanding how this all happens. The book condenses fascinating topics down to just 48 pages, half of which are illustrations. It’s pretty accessible for all.
What can we hope to gain from reading the book? An appreciation for the sophistication and beauty of our brains, the incredible processing power and dynamism up there. Also, I’m hoping readers will question future implications - are robots, and even plants, conscious? If so, should they have the same legal rights as us? What can nature tell us about collective consciousness? And as we understand more about how our brains operate, what ramifications does this have for the concept of free will? Are we just machines? Read the book with an open mind!
How long have you lived in Cambridge and what do you love about it? I first moved here in 2013 for my PhD. I’ve dabbled with living elsewhere since (in both Oxford and New Zealand) but I keep coming back! I love the tight community, the architecture, the open green spaces and the freedom to cycle around the city. Cambridge is a very friendly and interesting place to live. You can’t help but bump into people and stop for a chat.
What is Cambridge like as a city to work in as a scientist? Great, there’s over 900 neuroscientists alone working here just at the University, and then even more at the ever-growing Science Park. The arts scene here also seems to be thriving. There are lots of opportunities for collaborations and conversations, about areas you are passionate about.
What are your personal highlights? I’m really looking forward to returning to the fantastic Hay Literary Festival this summer to launch my book. It’s been described as the Woodstock of the mind and this will be my fourth year there. I love it! I’m also currently on the judging panel for the Wellcome Book Prize 2018, so I’ve spent the last few months reading fabulous books relating to humanity and medical sciences.
Where can we buy your fabulous book in Cambridge? The Consciousness book will be available in all good book shops from June!

Cambridge Street Aid As the number of people sleeping rough continues to increase across the UK, we spoke to Cambridge Street Aid about their invaluable work with some of the most disadvantaged people in our city and how we can all help. Launched in December 2016, the charity was set up as a way for kindhearted people from across the city to help a person less fortunate than themselves. By donating to the charity, it helps to limit the risk that the money donated by generous people may not help in the way it was intended to and avoids the risk of making matters worse.
Tips for other young people considering science as a career?
Go shape the future!
In the short time that the charity has been providing a helping hand to those that need it the most, more than £26,000 has been raised with nearly 70 people receiving grants totalling more than £20,000. All of those who have received vital support have all had a current or very recent presence on the street. Cambridge Street Aid is supported by all the main local organisations that help people in this type of situation, including Jimmy’s Cambridge, Wintercomfort and Cambridge Cyrenians to name just three. All of the money raised helps pay for something that a person on the street needs and will have a tangible impact on their lives. The majority of the time it’s a small thing that has been paid for but as is so often the case, the small things can make such a difference.
Some of the items the Cambridge Street Aid grants have paid for include workplace training, new clothing, an advance for rent on a property and even a bike to help travel to a job. The reaction to Street Aid has been overwhelmingly positive, with donors typically leaving messages to say how pleased they are to be able to give, knowing their gift will be well spent. Formerly homeless people the scheme has helped have commented on the generosity of donors, with one man writing “I can’t thank you enough for your kindness toward me and it makes me realise people do care.” You can help by texting ‘CAMB16’ followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070 (for example ‘CAMB16 £3’), or can do so online at www.cambscf.org.uk/index.php/ cambridge-street-aid.html

Shopping, chatting
& drinking coffee A day with Cambridge bloggers Sian from @stylewithfriends and Sophie Kate of @sophiekateblogs.
Q A
Who are we?
Q A
Are you from Cambridge?
SK: I’m Sophie Kate, 26, from sophiekate.co.uk and @sophiekateblogs on social media. Sian: And I’m Sian, 32, from Style With Friends and I’m also a photographer under Sian’s Photography.
Both: YES! Sian: I lived in Hull for a bit for Uni but I always knew I would end up back in Cambridge. SK: I never knew you went to university in Hull! I lived on top of a mountain for 6 months on a ski season which was pretty awesome!
Q A
So, you are blogger friends… how did you meet?
Sian: I met Sophie at a local blogger’s brunch event she hosted. SK: Ohh yeah that was it, wow that feels like ages ago… and you haven’t gotten rid of me yet — I’ve been calling up Sian for photoshoots ever since!
Q A
What were your first impressions of each other?
Q A
What do you love about each other’s style?
SK: So Sian, I’ll let you go first for that one! Sian: I thought you were really quiet when I first met you! How wrong was I… you definitely like to talk! SK: Well I guess I have to make up for all the years I couldn’t talk… I didn’t start speaking until I was 6, however that’s a whole other topic! Sian: Okay first impressions of me now, you’re not getting out of answering that one! SK: …CRAZY and loud, but not in a bad way. I think just confident and friendly really.
SK: I love the fact Sian has a really quirky sense of style and is never scared of trying anything new, whereas my style is a lot more “play it safe” and classic. Sian: I love the fact we’re so different. We know when we go shopping together we’ll never end up with the same items as our styles are so different.
Q A
What are your career highlights?
Sian: My career highlights are having my photo re-grammed by Felicity Hayward and having a Twitter shoutout by her too! Also having photos published! SK: Oh yeah she was at the Twitter event I was at the other weekend and she was lovely! Sian: So how about yours Sophie? SK: Well firstly can I say how amazing was that photo!? And the photo of Inthefrow which you took at London Fashion Week! You should definitely go check out Sian’s photography Instagram! So my career highlights are probably driving a Tesla for a day, and reviewing Foxhill Manor, that was pretty awesome too as it’s such a stunning hotel… I wanted to move in! Also not forgetting a major thing was having my hair done at L’Oréal and shooting the look after was pretty crazy. I never thought I’d be invited down to L’Oréal!
Q A
Who are your style influencers?
Sian: My style influencers are Confetti Crowd, Keiko Lynn, A Fashion Nerd by Amy Roiland and Maria and the Diamonds. SK: I’ve only heard of one of them! Maybe I need to stop living under a rock! My style influencers have to be Lily Pebbles and Anna Newton from The Anna Edit. Also I love Emma Hill and Kim from Love Cloth, she’s always wearing something cool! Sian: See I haven’t heard of Kim — we’re always introducing each other to new people *said while looking Kim up on insta* yep, completely Sophie’s style! SK: Oh how could we forget Megan Ellaby?! We’re both massive fan girls of her! Also Sian you met her the other week you lucky thing didn’t you. Sian: Yeah she was so nice!

Q A
What trends are you loving this season?
Q A
Do you have any advice for budding influencers?
Sian: Colourful stripes and ice cream coloured suits. 100%. SK: Basket bags. Give me all of them!! I’m also loving the stripes too but my whole wardrobe is already very stripy so I don’t need to buy into that one. Although shhhh, I did just order a new stripy tee today! Sian: I want some colourful striped flair trousers. Those 70’s vibes…yes please!
Sian: Keep your following organic and don’t focus on numbers. SK: How did you know I was going to say that? Well probably because we both feel strongly that fake followers isn’t the way forward. People are putting their trust in bloggers more and more and how can you trust someone who’s cheating to grow their following?
Spring / Summer
Sian: I think making sure you keep your content as a reflection of you and who are you. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. SK: Such a good point, and good quality content too. It’s better to work harder on less content rather than making lots of average content. Sian: Also you don’t need an amazing camera for good shots, but do your research on composition as you need a good eye for framing. SK: I started with no knowledge at all, I didn’t even know how to start a blog or how to take a decent photo! Sian: Well now you’re the flat lay queen! SK: Aw thanks Sian! So I guess we should wrap things up! Sian: Yep, oh one last thing, try to find someone else you can connect with and support each other! SK: Great advice! Right well that’s it from us! You can check out what we’re up to over on our social media or blogs. You can find Sian at @sians_photography and I’m at @sophiekateblogs thanks for reading x
A fostering crisis on your doorstep Eastern Fostering Service (EFS) spent two days in The Grafton in early April – we found out what they were doing and why their work is so important to so many people. Thousands of children in the East of England are unable to live with their birth families and are in need of a secure and loving foster family to call their own. Despite the sheer numbers of children with this need, there is a real lack of families that are able to care for them. In fact, there are fewer people than ever putting themselves forward for the task of caring for these children. For youngsters that find a home it means the world and there are so many success stories about children that find permanent homes in foster care, but more people are needed. To address this shortfall, EFS is on a drive to inform more people about how they can become a foster carer.
If you were in The Grafton in early April, you may have seen members of the team from EFS engaging with visitors to the centre – you may have even spoken to them yourself! Throughout the two days, the team spent time talking to shoppers about how they can become prospective foster carers, answering questions and dispelling myths about what it is like to be a foster carer. Days spent in locations such as The Grafton are vital for organisations such as EFS and Eleanor Vanner, EFS Director, explains why.

“Being able to provide well thought out, careful matches for the children and young people in Cambridgeshire is becoming increasingly difficult. We are consistently having to turn children away because we are not prepared to offer foster carers whom we do not believe will be able to provide the right match for that particular child. We believe these children deserve the very best we can achieve. The situation at the moment is heart-breaking.” There are a huge number of ways that people can help – it’s not just long-term foster care. “There are so many different types of fostering that people can put themselves forward for” added Lucy Stevens, EFS Foster Carer. “It can be to provide short term or respite caring, caring for children with special needs, teenagers, sibling groups, unaccompanied refugee children and young parent and child placements. Fostering doesn’t need to be a lifelong commitment, but I firmly believe that if you make the difference in the life of just one child you’ve done a hugely worthwhile thing.”
A poem by one of the many young people that EFS cares for each year. Here the 13-yearold leans on their experience with EFS to help ‘Little Pig’ not to be scared on their journey whilst in foster care. More can and needs to be done to help young people like this across the region.

Entertaining the kids with The Entertainer
“Happy children equals happy mum!”
Charlotte McKie-Riethoff aka @thriftyfashionmum on her trip to The Entertainer at The Grafton. Is there anything better than a visit to a toy shop? As an adult it conjures up nostalgic fuzzy memories of rows and rows of brand new unobtainable toys, just itching to be played with. And what a treat, only to be experienced with a fist full of well-earned pocket money - and a promise of a long, playful afternoon ahead! Skip forward 30 or so years and here I was in The Grafton with my two little lads, Sidney aged 5 and Miller aged 3, standing in front of a proper toy shop - The Entertainer. As we passed the threshold to infinite fun, floor to ceiling was packed full of boxes and boxes of TOYS! It even made me feel giddy! There was a great range of items for all ages and gender including a huge selection of Paw Patrol, Marvel and Lego. Alas, we didn’t make it far before my two spotted the Star Wars section. They are currently obsessed with Star Wars, having watched The Force Awakens recently as well as being versed in the ‘original’ three films by their 40-year-old uncle! With a promise of a lightsaber firmly in their heads, my kids were in galactic heaven! After much discussion of colour and ‘goodie’ versus ‘baddie’ we decided that they were both going to be ‘goodies’ and bought my eldest the blue (Jedi Knight) and my youngest the green (Jedi Master). They were THRILLED! My eldest soon spotted a Storm Trooper digital watch which he had to have because it was “so cool” - the time element being somewhat neglected. At only £2.80, in the basket it went!
It was decided that an Ewok treehouse and model Millennium Falcon would be two ideal toys to share and could be added to some of their existing Star Wars pieces. Our final purchase was for my youngest who picked out a three figure pack containing the droid BB8. Being one of his favourite characters this made his day. Done! What a treat! What a haul! The best part of it all though? EVERYTHING we picked was discounted. Sidney and Miller haven’t stopped playing with them. Happy children equals happy mummy! On the way to the tills to pay for all our loot I spotted some retro-tastic birthday cards and wrap. Right up my street! As we had a friend’s little girl’s birthday coming up, I couldn’t resist purchasing some 1980’s Care Bear wrapping paper and a matching birthday card. If only for me and her mum to really fully appreciate! They also have little steps at each till so your children can get involved with paying and chatting to the staff. Something I’ve never seen before and a very sweet touch. On our way home we made a quick stop in H&M Home, which meant a cheeky treat for the parents too (a mustard yellow ceramic plant pot, if you will) and by the time we left The Grafton it was getting dark. But with our parking totalling less than a fiver and all our bargainous toys, we left exhausted but thoroughly happy! Charlotte McKie-Riethoff of @thriftyfashionmum

Springing onto your screen The Grafton’s Head of Motion Picture Reviews, Max Martin, picks his ones to watch coming to Vue at The Grafton this spring.
“This spring we’ve got a whole host of great films coming out, with plenty to look forward to. From game adaptations and huge franchise films that could very well break box office records, to what is sure to become a firm family favourite and a very welcome new addition to the Star Wars saga, there is something for everyone to enjoy. With that, here are the five films that I’m sure will have you reaching for the popcorn this spring.”

Health & Fitness Getting active in Cambridge this spring/summer As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, spring is a fantastic time in Cambridge. In what is already a very active city, more and more people can be seen pounding the pavement as they get in a morning jog before work and many make the most of the lighter evenings and the abundance of green space on offer to get moving. Maybe your new year’s resolution was to get active and take part in one of the many distance runs, obstacle races or triathlons that take place across the region? Maybe you’ve been inspired by the runners out and about in the city? Whatever your reason, if you want to get going but you’re not quite sure where to start, our friends at Decathlon have provided some handy hints and tips to help. “Start small and go from there,” recommends Andy. “5K is a popular first race because almost everyone can complete it with a few weeks of basic training. ‘Couch to 5K’ from the NHS is a great online tool that takes you through, week-by-week, what you should be doing and when. If you’re confident of going a bit further, then by all means have a look online and find a training plan that is best for you. There are plenty about, but make sure you do your homework and read the reviews and recommendations to make sure it is suited to what you want to achieve.
"Got your shoes sorted? Good. Now it’s time to get kitted out. As we’re in spring, I’d recommend a few bits that are quite versatile that deal well with hot or cold. Base layers like the Kiprun Care Long Sleeved T-Shirt are essential even when it’s warm, and you can build from there. Lightweight and comfortable are the most important factors so shorts, leggings and tees that wick away sweat while you run means you’re more likely to be able to go for longer. "Spring also means the inevitable unexpected downpour, especially in the UK. A lightweight and durable jacket like the Run Rain Jacket will help prevent you getting wet and also doubles as a windcheater if the temperature dips so does two jobs in one. To round it out, grab a water bottle like the RunAid 550ml to make sure you’re hydrated and then you’re all good to go.”

Happy running!
"Once you’ve selected your distance and your training plan, you’ll need to get your gear so you’re ready to hit the street. Most importantly, you’ll need a good pair of running shoes which are suited to you and your running style. "We provide free gait analysis instore on our state-of-the-art pressure plate machine. It explains the type of shoe that you’ll get the most benefit from. Remember, even if the shoes cost a bit more than expected, a good pair of trainers are key in protecting you in the long term so are definitely a good investment before you start to run.

Brow-raising Eyebrows Eyebrows… two bits of hair that just sit on your face, or, the key to a groomed and on-trend appearance? Back in the 1920s, silver screen stars like Anna May Wong and Clara Bow wore theirs pencil-thin with a severe downward-curving tail, and every decade that followed has seen its share of brow-raising eyebrows. Perhaps, thanks to Audrey Hepburn's full set in the 1960s, arches began taking on a more natural appearance, until the '70s, when disco, shimmery shadow, and interesting brow shapes came on the scene. Which, brings us to today and the current eyebrow obsession – a ‘done un-done’ thick set untouched by tweezers brow.
1.
Paying homage to the likes of Cara Delevingne's impeccable arches, this ‘natural’ look doesn’t always come so naturally. If you’re looking to change your brows, tame them or just fancy a bit of brow-spiration first stop needs to be a professional. Both Debenhams at The Grafton and Angel Beauty have services starting from around £10. Once you’ve got your basic shape right, it’s time for the wonder products! Here’s our round-up of some of the best eyebrow products on the market and available at The Grafton.

Getting to know Amélie Amélie will soon become the newest restaurant at The Grafton and the first addition to the highlyanticipated Food Social. We’ve got five things you need to know about one of the most exciting new openings in Cambridge in 2018.
1
Amélie will be the first restaurant in the UK dedicated to serving Flammekueche - a dish that dates back to the 14th century and originates from a region in the East of France, close to the German border.
2
Cooked quickly in a very hot oven with quality, fresh ingredients, Flammekueche is made with light, fresh dough and crème fraiche. It is then finished with a range of delicious toppings. It’s great either savoury or sweet and Amélie will be serving a selection of both – yum!
3
Owned by the father-son team of Regis and Alexander Crepy, the duo will bring some serious restaurant experience and credentials with them. Regis was the chef and mastermind behind three very successful restaurants in Suffolk, including the Great House in Lavenham, and Alex was one of the youngest managing partners with the London-based Gaucho Group.
4
The family theme doesn’t stop with the fact that Amélie will be run by Regis and Alexander. The restaurant is named after Regis’s daughter.
5
It’s going to be an eyecatching addition to the centre. The family-friendly restaurant will feature a bright yellow converted Citroen campervan where the bar will be located.
