WELCOME TO THE 12TH BFDG PRODUCTION DESIGN AWARDS

Ahuge welcome to The 12 th British Film Designers Guild Awards, supported by BEN. It is a real pleasure to be celebrating our members’ fantastic work at The Londoner Hotel again; in the heart of London’s Cinema Land.

We are thrilled to have been partnered by BEN as our Headline Sponsor for the first time and thank them for their support and input into the planning of our awards.

I also want to thank our other sponsor partners for their part in tonight’s ceremony. Without their support, this show would not exist to the same extent. If you are lucky enough to say hello to one of our partners tonight, please take a moment to thank them for their support of our community. Our suppliers are the beating heart of our industry and their commitment to our Guild is second to none.

You may have noticed that we have slightly altered the name of the event, with the introduction of a number. The judging period remains the same, but now we can continue to count our achievements year after year as we honour our colleagues' work and grow the Awards programme.

The name is not the only change this year. Our regular host Mark Kermode can’t be with us but is leaving us in the very able hands of fellow Film Critics Ali Plumb and Anna Smith. Anna and Ali, welcome to the Art Department Appreciation Society!

2022 felt like the re-activation of our Guild as we embraced in-person networking and training events at The Third Floor, Creative Space by Arri, Palmbrokers and Pinewood Studios. We also continued our run of successful online events. We forged relationships with other industry organisations including The Production Guild, Graphics Union, Filmbase, Production Designers Collective, Bafta Albert and BECTU Art Department. We are just getting started and will build on this in 2023.

It was great to meet members for our AGM this summer at Pinewood and discuss our focus for the next twelve months. We have some great ambitions across our community; the three main goals for my time as Chair are Learning, Sustainability and Pluralism.

Our Mentoring Programme supported by Screenskills is one that I am particularly proud of. We now need to find financing for the second phase as the Screenskills funding comes to an end. I would love the opportunity to discuss this with those interested in helping us further this crucial programme.

Our Planet Positive message is here to stay. We are proud to be at the forefront of promoting sustainable practices in the Art Department and what better way to do that than to reward the efforts our members with our new Planet Positive Award. We are hoping to establish a Sustainability Committee later this year to ensure we continue to promote best practice among our peers.

As the Guild continues to grow, we must remember that we are all in this together. I hope we can embrace the sense of engagement and community between people from different cultures, classes, races, genders and abilities. Not only making everyone feel simply welcome and equally considered, but promoting and incorporating the rich assets gained from a diverse range of perspectives.

I hope you all have a fantastic evening. Good luck to the nominees!

THE PETER LAMONT SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT AWARD

We’re delighted to sponsor the Peter Lamont Spotlighting New Talent Award. Britain’s designers are renowned the world over for their creativity and artistic excellence, and it is this talent that plays such an integral role in helping people escape into the world of storytelling.

At Netflix we’re committed to supporting Britain’s creative industry for the long term. We’re working with local talent right across the length and breadth of the UK to make great stories for our 214m members globally. We’re also investing significantly in training and development through our Grow Creative programme which is helping to bridge the skills gap, upskill the UK creative community, and improve diversity head-on.” — Netflix

This award was renamed in honour of Production Designer, and former BFDG Chairman, Peter Lamont (pictured). Peter was always keen to help and support young talent in the Art Department and as this award’s intention is to highlight the future stars of the next generation of filmmakers the BFDG thought it would be a fitting tribute to dedicate this award to him.

MATILDA BEARD JUNIOR DRAUGHTSPERSON

Having grown up with a father in the industry I was always fascinated by the Art Department and although I went to an academic school I was always attracted to film design, knowing it was something that you could do as a serious career. All through secondary school I spent many of my holidays trying to fit in work experience wherever I could before securing a place to study Design for Film and Television at Nottingham Trent University.

After graduating I was offered my first film job as an Art Department Runner on ‘The Gentlemen’ with Gemma Jackson, who then took me under her wing over her next three projects. I am very fortunate to have worked with so many talented, experienced, and respected people who have taught me so much since.

One of the things that I love most about being in the Art Department is that you never know what

kind of a project you will be working on next or where it might take you. I spent the first half of last year on location in Margate on ‘Empire of Light’ and now I have just arrived in Turkey on my first foreign location job.

KATIE MAZUREK JUNIOR DRAUGHTSPERSON

Films allow you to take a step away from reality and delve into worlds led by the imagination. Understanding this from a young age made me realise that this is something I passionately wanted to be a part of. I have always enjoyed drawing and would often find myself very distracted in school; instead of solving equations, I would instead find myself doodling in my workbooks.

Working at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London was a real eye opener, giving me a deeper insight into the overall film making process in many areas. Meeting Gary Tomkins gave me the push that I needed to pursue my career in the Art Department. By getting a taste of the set designing process through Film Design International, I was then able to really kick things off by obtaining my first job as an Art Department Runner on ‘Avenue 5’, working with Simon Bowles (PD) and Nick Dent (SAD) and the team. My draughting and model making skills grew

and have continued to do so by working alongside my incredibly talented and welcoming team.

Being able to step onto an actual set and see the smallest detail that I’ve drawn right there in front of me fills me with true excitement and joy. Something from the imagination becoming fully realised.

RACHEL NEILL ART DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT

I can vividly remember the day, shadowing the Art Director on a local TV show during University holidays, when I discovered designing and creating story worlds for films was someone's actual job. After graduating, I was accepted as a ScreenSkills trainee, a fantastic opportunity that was my entry point to a career combining my love of film and art. Following an exciting start, my confidence took an early knock and I began to question whether I was up to the challenge. But thanks to the positive, ever-supportive Art Department teams I subsequently worked with, I persevered and pushed myself harder. Thank goodness I did!

Since then I’ve been incredibly lucky to work alongside, and learn from, an amazingly talented pool of people. In particular, ‘Karen Pirie’ allowed my confidence to grow, giving me an all-round education in what to expect and the opportunity to really contribute. ‘Bridgerton 2’ and ‘Queen

Charlotte’ brought demanding new challenges focusing on period graphics. The work developed my skills in an area that I’ve unexpectedly come toabsolutely adore.

I’m unbelievably grateful for being able to wake up every morning looking forward to work, in eager anticipation of what each day will bring.

THE PLANET POSITIVE AWARD

SUPPORTED BY UNIVERSAL PIXELS

Climate change is the urgent topic on everyone’s agenda. From school children to World leaders, we are acutely aware of the negative impact our actions have had on the planet.

We are proud to be one of the first organisations in the UK Film & TV industry to introduce a brand new sustainability criteria to our awards programme – the Planet Positive Award supported by Universal Pixels. With its introduction we hope to champion exceptional and sustainable work that consciously considers waste, emissions and materials within the design process. Our sincerest thanks to BAFTA albert and Creative Zero for being part of the consultation process. We are especially thankful to Universal Pixels for sponsoring this Award. As an albert accredited sustainable supplier we are proud to be working alongside them in going the extra mile to be greener in support of the production industry.

We look forward to seeing the Planet Positive Award go from strength to strength, as sustainable practices become the norm. Thank you to everyone that submitted an entry this year. We hope this encourages you to plan your submission for the 13th Awards as we prove that the Art Department is leading the way in Film & TV Sustainability.

Award-winning, bespoke video rental company, Universal Pixels, (UP) has been championing conversations around sustainability and meaningful action within the live music, theatre and arts industries for several years.

As a pioneering supplier working in various entertainment sectors, UP has taken numerous steps to show its commitment to tackling climate change, including setting its own Sustainable Development goals.

UP also maintains 100% renewable energy use, achieves a 6% reduction in emissions intensity per £1m revenue, and retains carbon neutral status through greenhouse gas emissions reductions and via the acquisition of highquality carbon offsets.

As of 2022, UP embeds energy efficiency during the evaluation process when procuring new technical inventory.

Building a reputation across multiple sectors has enabled the team to bring key knowledge and expertise to UP’s most recent expansion into ICVFX. UP has been servicing music artists globally in the delivery of visually engaging tours and events for six years, and now, through its successful film project division, also offers specificallyhoned services as a trusted supplier to film and TV production companies.

Incorporating lessons learned from theatre and touring

by utilising lighter packaging, lower power consumption, better transport packaging and power monitoring, UP’s credentials in concert touring and theatre translates fluidly to film and TV.

UP Commercial Director and Co-Founder, Phil Mercer, says: As a company, sustainability is in our DNA. We offer a variety of solutions when it comes to our clients’ concerns, and as a bespoke service company, we’re able to help solve environmental impact issues on a case by case basis.

‘Pink Floyd’ star Roger Waters’ current tour presents like an immersive art experience, that also happens to be a music concert. We supplied a light-weight LED product that not only reduces carbon emissions, with zero compromise on image quality. In ICVFX, we apply the same principles; for us, it’s never been about giant volumes - sets can benefit hugely from smaller screens and skilfully delivered projection without a compromise on production values.

Tackling climate change is not something that any one company can do in isolation. We’re taking an active role in how the wider UK ICVFX industry addresses the climate crisis through our involvement with Albert, and that’s also why we felt it was important to sponsor this award and continue these vital conversations.

EMPIRE OF LIGHT

The production was mainly based in and around Margate, with crew staying locally or using public transport and electric bicycles to travel to set. The construction team used recycled materials in key set pieces, and props were sourced second hand where feasible. Crew were encouraged to avoid use of single use plastics among other sustainability initiatives.

NO FLOOR NO MORE

Facilitating the sale of refuse carpet onto charity No Floor No More which provides cheap carpeting solutions to low-income households, avoiding landfill at the end of the production.

LANDSCAPERS

The department made clear efforts to incorporate reclaimed elements into sets, thought carefully about material choice when designing environments, and made an extra effort to find new homes for everything in a prop sale post-shoot.

THE 12TH BFDG PRODUCTION DESIGN AWARDS 20

META SPA

Incorporating the use of relatively new material Vectar Board over traditional MDF, the design for this Commercial was developed as a sustainable production from the outset. Elements were reskinned or repurposed and the workshop used for prepping is supported with a solar panel array.

THE ESSEX SERPENT

The Art Department designed locations adapted from existing buildings and locations, and created sets that could be reused again, or given another lease of life in alternative form. A large amount of set build was donated to a local filmmaking University, marble chip was sent to a company to recycle into terrazzo surface and crew used bicycles to travel onto the Marshes to protect the habitat among a number of other Sustainability initiatives.

THE PEASANTS

The designer was committed to creating a set construction method that avoided waste. The result was a self-designed solution of cardboard bricks which was then skinned with printed or painted canvas. The brief to the set dressing team was to avoid plastic and ensure props were 100% compostable.

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE ART DEPARTMENT AWARD

“We are delighted to once again support The British Film Designers Guild and their annual Production Design Awards. These awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of our incredible Production Design and Art Departments working in the UK film and TV industry, and shine a light on the talented individuals whose contributions bring productions to life on our screens.

This past year has been a busy and vibrant year for the UK film and TV industry and it’s been wonderful working with so many of the BFDG members on a variety of film and TV productions at the Studio. We celebrate the members who have made a positive impact not only through their skill and talent but through their attitude, work ethic and team spirit. Many congratulations to all this year’s very worthy nominees and winners.”

I started my journey in the Art Department on set as a Standby. I loved the excitement of being on set, collaborating with other departments to create something we’re all proud of.

Now as an Art Director, when visualising the sets with the Designer, I'am always considering how they function in order to facilitate the onset crew to be creative and efficient, whilst continuing to uphold the Designer’s vision to tell the story. I find myself seeing the world through a different lens now, and every bit of detail is inspiration and reference for a future build, but it also means having a camera roll full of ceiling beams, architraves, and floorboards.

I’ve been privileged to learn from generous people who’ve given their time to teach me, and I try to pass on some of the advice that has been so valuable to me to all the new starters who join the team. Seeing the enthusiasm of someone starting in the Art Department is a wonderful reminder of how lucky I am to have found a career that I love and feel passionate about.

My love of storyboarding began when I watched two films when I was ten years old - ‘The Elephant Man’ - where I realised someone is responsible for the look of the film and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ which had an amazing documentary showing the director going through his storyboards with the actors… I was hooked.

Through hard work, luck and the kind help and advice of two industry legends, I started my career in 1995. After five years I hit the big time when I was lucky enough to get on the first Harry Potter film and as they say the rest is history.

Years ago, a fellow storyboard artist told me that we have a privileged position in that we often get the director to ourselves. I have always enjoyed these particaular moments and hopefully I’ve learnt a thing or two along the way, although to this very day, I still wonder if I’m putting the camera in the right place, be it only with pencil and paper. Yes, I still use pencil and paper!

I feel very honoured to receive this award and I thank you all.

I started my career at the BBC as a secretary before progressing to being a Production Assistant, calling the shots in the gallery and checking the continuity on filming assignments. It was only when I worked on a film about the designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, which enabled me to follow both her and her buyer round the hire companies, that I discovered the existence of the amazing role of Production Buyer. I applied for a job in the buying department where I was trained and worked on some fantastic productions. Probably the best of these was ‘Fortunes of War’ starring the then littleknown Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh.

While at the BBC I started my own hire company

The Printed Word, and I decided the time was right to go freelance, working on programmes such as ‘Poirot’ and ‘Morse’ before progressing to working on films.

I worked with the talented designer Maria Djurkovic on films such as ‘Sliding Doors’, ‘Wilde’, and ‘The Hours.’ I then went on to work with my great friend, Set Decorator, Jille Azis on ‘Around the World in 80 days’, ‘Oliver Twist,’ ‘GI Joe’, ‘The Mummy’ and many others. I was privileged to work on Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’ not easy for the Set Decorating department, but a tour de force for the designer Dante Ferretti. I had huge fun working with Jennifer Williams and Caroline Smith on ‘Christopher Robin’ and I even had the great pleasure of working with Stuart Craig and Stephanie McMillan on ‘In Love and War’. I have recently been working as at Set Decorator and I enjoyed dressing ‘I Used to be Famous’.

I have spent the last year writing a book ‘How to Dress a Movie’ which is a collection of personal stories and interviews with Industry professionals. This should be released later in the year.

I am married to actor John Leeson (the voice of K9 in ‘Dr.Who’) and we have a son Guy who is a film editor and script writer. He and his partner Sara worked on the best production of all, my delightful granddaughter, Rosie!

PLANET POSITIVE GALA CARBON REDUCTION PLAN

It would be amiss of us to introduce a Planet Positive Award and not do our best to deliver a planet positive event. We are thrilled to be working in partnership with a number of fantastic sponsors who are helping us to achieve that goal.

ASL Films Division has become our first ever Planet Positive Gala Sponsor and are supporting us with making greener decisions in all aspects of our event. They are an industry leader having achieved ISO14001 accreditation which has seen them implement far-reaching policies in all areas of its business operations. We hope you spotted their branded Rickshaws bringing guests to the venue emission-free tonight!

We are also grateful to be supported by Indie-Zero Studios and Creative Zero for our carbon calculator, offsetting and reduction plans.

Guided by Creative Zero, we are working on a three year carbon reduction plan. Last year they delivered our first audit, this year we are working to reduce our impact, and next year we will aim to be pretty perfect.

Many of the decisions on elements of tonight's event have been taken with our carbon footprint in mind. Here are just some of the steps we are taking:

• No more paper tickets – all event communication is being kept digital

• Reduced brochure print run – we are using digital technology on the tables and only handing brochures out to those that want a souvenir copy

• The majority of printed items will either be on recycled or recyclable stock

• Recycled tote for your goody bag this evening, with all content items being planet positive friendly - i.e. no single use plastics!

• Pre-event information shared on Green Key Hotels and more ecologically friendly travel options

• Rickshaws available to cycle guests to venue from tube stations

• Travel information gathered from guests on arrival to feed into our Carbon Calculator

• A green runner has been provided to collect supplier carbon information

• Vegetarian starter for everyone

• All meats, cheeses and vegetables sourced from Britain or Europe at the furthest

• Pudding is entirely vegan

Last year we offset our carbon footprint of 32 tCO2e through verified carbon reduction projects and planted 32 trees in the UK. This year we will be closely monitoring our impact and are aiming to reduce our footprint with these simple changes. We thank you for your support in helping us to achieve a planet positive event!

Thank you to our Planet Positive Sponsors!
