WELCOME To the 2019 British Film Designers Guild Awards at the Sheraton Hotel, a bigger venue again for our growing Awards ceremony. This year there have been some new changes to challenge our ever resourceful Management team, who have not only launched our new website, but delivered a new Awards voting system all connected to the website. It takes a huge effort to collate all of the information for each entry and I’m sure you will agree, the result was very impressive. The organisation for this year’s Awards started almost immediately after last year’s had finished, with Mads and her team working hard on this, as well as continuing their normal work running the Guild and organising member events. Without the Management team, Mads, Ali and Sophie, the Committee and our generous sponsors this evening would not happen. Thank you all. We are delighted to welcome back Mark Kermode to host the Awards this evening, and help celebrate the wealth of talent we have in the UK, and amongst our membership. This year has been busier than ever, with a lot of work available in both film and television art departments. Our membership continues to grow, and with it our voice in the industry, as does the recognition of our work amongst our peers and to a wider audience. Our members continue to deliver a fantastic standard of work maintaining the UK’s position as a major destination for international film and television production, and a source of major talent for productions based both in the UK and throughout the world. Congratulations to Peter Young, legendary Set Decorator, and past supporter of the Guild for many years, on his BFDG Lifetime Achievement Award. Peter has a long and successful career going back to the 1960’s and is the winner of numerous Awards, including Oscars for Sleepy Hollow and Batman. He has a long and distinguished career working on many major film productions over five decades: Stardust, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Troy, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and many others. A worthy winner, and I would like to welcome Peter back to the Guild as an Honourary member. Thank you also to our members for supporting the event by submitting their work and keeping the Guild a lively and relevant part of the film and television industry. Finally, I’d like to thank our Vice Chair, Sonja Klaus, for her continual help and support with the Awards organisation, and our new Treasurer, Claire Gendler for her work on the room design. This will be my final Awards as BFDG Chairman, as I will be handing over to Sonja who will take over as Chair at the AGM later this year. Wishing you all, a wonderful evening and a very successful 2020. Adam O’Neill Chairman 06

SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT

SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT 2019

MOLLY BLAKE

Once upon a time, there was a country bumpkin whose real dreams were of the magical life behind the screen. One day, after many months of hassling them, Emmerdale finally came knocking. They inducted her into their freelance Props pool, where she had her first taste of set life. She was hooked. Must do courses. Must meet people. Time for that all-important and absolutely essential yet horrifically excruciating NETWORKING. One fortuitous day, she met a genie called Choi, who helped all her dreams come true. Fast-forward to Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw. (Shooting near Leeds in little old Eggborough, of all places – praise be to the industry for recruiting locally!) Woah. Big cars. Big set. Big crew. MORE PLEASE. It’s all in London you say? The big smoke? BRING IT ON! HELLO NEW WORLD! The Postcard Killings – a modern horror. Turning London into Europe (oh, the irony). Rushing through the capital at all hours of the day… bit different from rural Yorkshire. Jump to Enola Holmes – this time, Coordinating. Hone Excel FAST. Communication. Organisation. Diplomacy. It’s a tricky business keeping an office full of artists happy (!) but here we are now on the second series of The Witcher, performing a few of my own spells to keep the smiles on everyone’s faces. Now, the dream is to one day become a genie myself, pass on the lamp, and keep the magic moving.

SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT 2019

ANNE CLEMENS

Growing up reading a lot of books, creating my own worlds in my imagination and then seeing these stories being turned into epic films, I have always dreamed of working in this industry. I have always dreamed of working in this industry. This whole world is nothing but positively exciting, thrillingly adventurous and wonderfully challenging to me! I decided to do what needed to be done and left everything known behind to come to England and become part of a team of like-minded people, a community of creatives, something I had never experienced before. I love the thrill of constantly being challenged, always being forced to learn more and gain more experience, the striving for progress with every step forward — you can only win! I can feel how all those people shape my path, train, encourage and inspire me along my way as each and every one of them leaves their traces so far. I can’t wait for all the people yet to come! I hope in a few years time I can be a positive, creative influence on someone as well, just as all the people who have walked with me and given me the chances that I needed. Thank you.

SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT 2019

ANAÏS DELPECH

I grew-up in the South of France and was always fascinated with the magical world of films and theatre. My love and passion for this industry led me to join the cinema school La Fémis, Paris where I studied production design. During my studies, I had the opportunity to visit the studios in London as a trainee, which enabled me to grasp deeper knowledge of production design and its role in film making. I have always been keen to discover how the best designers in the world work in the UK. My wish to move to London was realised when I worked as set decoration trainee on Dunkirk. It propelled me to relocate to the UK. I have been fortunate to work with various passionate art and set decoration departments so far. Recently working as a petty cash buyer on the film Eternals as well as other projects such as The Good Liar, Johnny English Strikes again and the TV series Pennyworth and Jack Ryan in addition to other commercials and short films. I enjoy being the eyes of a set decorator while sourcing props to help generate a specific atmosphere required by the designer. I like the sense of detail by using specific colours and textures to make a vibrant set alive. I wish to keep learning and exploring further by working on different projects and hopefully to become an assistant set decorator and then a set decorator in the future. Model for a Music Clip

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

PETER YOUNG — SET DECORATOR A few words from Peter: “After the army and art school, I started work in the Post Room at the BBC. In 1965, I was working in a boutique in the Kings Road, Chelsea when Tony Woollard, Production Designer, offered me a position on a film called Interlude – of which I am eternally grateful. Some 70 films later I am flattered and humbled that my peers have rewarded me with this award! And thank them all with humility! I have met and worked with many remarkable people and am eternally grateful to have had this experience to learn and be taught by so many talented people – Academy Awards aside, a Lifetime Achievement award from one’s peers is truly humbling. Thank you.” Peter has had a long and illustrious career working on a total of 70 films and TV Programmes as well as being Secretary of the BFDG in 1988-89 with John Graysmark as Chairman. Although he as worked mainly, for some 50 years, as Set Decorator, Peter has also worked as a Costume Designer – for Yorkshire Television’s Emmerdale and Junior Showtime (1974) and Production Designer for Michael Winner’s Chorus of Disapproval on location in Scarborough (1981). Following his first job in 1965 Peter’s career went from strength to strength working on such notable productions as: Performance, with Mick Jagger (1968), Superman II (1978) Superman III (1978), Supergirl (1980), Judge Dread (1994), Michael Collins (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1996), The Mummy Returns (2000), and Troy (2002) and working extensively with Director Tim Burton on 5 of his films: Batman (1989), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Planet of the Apes (2001), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and Alice in Wonderland (2010). Peter has received 2 Academy Awards for his collaborative work on Batman with Designer Anton Furst and Sleepy Hollow with Designer Rick Heinricks and has received BAFTA Nominations for England Made Me in 1971, Gulag in 1979 and Alice in Wonderland in 2011. We wish Peter many congratulations this evening for winning the British Film Designers Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. 33
