WELCOME BFDG PRODUCTION DESIGN AWARDS Who could have known, while we sat In our finery at the Sheraton, what the year ahead had in store… It has been a difficult time for us all. Uncertainty has engulfed our industry, with travel plans thwarted, productions halted, and waves of creatives confined to their attics and offices. We wondered if things could ever be the same again. And yet, true to form, we showed that our resistance knows no bounds. Art departments across the country are dealing with each Covidinduced hurdle with the ease and grace of a ballerina – armed of course, with our sharpies in hand. The Guild, despite the circumstances, has continued to thrive, with a plethora of online events including our design forums and portfolio surgeries. We have also furthered our reach with our induction of student memberships and heightened our focus on inclusivity by working with a range of amazing organisations such as the Creative Access project. We want to thank you for your engagement and support throughout these extraordinary times. I am incredibly proud to know that our members persist with their efforts to instil and uphold the incredible standards the art department has always represented. 2021 has also brought an enriched awards programme with the arrival of three new award categories: Commercial, Short Film and Outstanding Contribution. Celebrating design in all its forms, our awards recognise the skill of communicating a story in 30 seconds (Commercial), celebrating those working with restricted budgets or potentially at the beginnings of their careers (Short Film) and shines a light on the importance of peer recognition for their overall contribution to the Art Department process (Outstanding Contribution). This year’s awards have of course faced challenges, but our management team and events committee have taken these obstacles in their stride. Tonight, they bring you, what I know, will be an entertaining evening, full of exciting surprises and more ‘winkwink-nudge-nudges’ than you can shake a colour chart at. I’d especially like to thank Mads, Ali and the rest of the committee, as well as Mike Battle, Mark Farley, and our generous sponsors, for helping us create a ceremony for the history books! I wish you all a wonderful evening and every success for the coming year.

THE PETER LAMONT SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT AWARD

This award’s intention is to highlight the future stars of the next generation of filmmakers it has been renamed in honour of Production Designer and BFDG member Peter Lamont, who sadly passed away in December 2020. Peter was always keen to help and support young talent in the Art Department and as this award’s intention is to highlight the future stars of the next generation of filmmakers the BFDG thought it would be a fitting tribute to dedicate this award to him.

DAISY BRADLEY SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT 2020 I think film remains a medium dedicated to human narrative, although it can be fantastical or epic there must always be a sensitive quality to the work that allows it to resonate. I feel proud to be part of an industry that is dedicated to keeping storytelling an imperative and important part of our culture. I have a very tangible approach to working, I love being the person on the ground who is running around and I especially love trying to hunt down an item at a market or antique store, I think this has served me quite well when I comes to an eye for detail. My growing list of weird and wonderful contacts, as well as my growing list of weird and wonderful colleagues, continue to broaden my view on the world, from art to architecture, to the domestic and the historical. Learning how to research through varied sources and weaving together these fragments of ideas has become something I love. I would like to continue to learn more about what it takes to make a technical and creatively competent set, I think there is a certain playfulness and assurance that comes with time that I hope to achieve working in this field, with the end results being credible, sensitive and artistic.

EMMA FORD SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT 2020 In a small village in Bradford West Yorkshire, I was asked what I saw myself doing in the future. Working in a creative industry wasn’t considered a real job where I was from, but I was fascinated by film and decided going to college to study art & design was a step in the right direction! Fast forward to Film School I specialised in Production Design and wrote essays on filmmakers, I could never dream I would one day work with. After lots of pestering and being tireless to learn on placements and courses, I have been fortunate enough to work on some beautiful TV dramas, commercials, and short films, but it was “Tom & Jerry” where Set Decorating became the department for me. I love how Set Dec presents unique backdrops that are challenging and daring. It demands attention to detail, imagination, vision, historical context, and reason while working in harmony as a team in a pressured environment. It brings stories to life and turns magic and fantasy into reality with props, fabrics, colours patterns and textures. It has everything I like and more! I’m incredibly lucky to be working with the most prestigious and renowned HOD’s and Art Departments that I learn from every day, and my 10-year-old self’s Harry Potter dreams were made working on Fantastic Beasts! Sometimes I can’t believe this is my job! Years from now I’d like to be a HOD, making creative decisions and to work more integrally with other departments. I’m also very passionate about improving and challenging the holistic side of the industry that involves changing certain cultures around employees’ well-being and making a more balanced working environment.

LIBBY HOGGARD SPOTLIGHTING NEW TALENT 2020 During a career talk with a tutor at college, the Design for Film and TV course at NTU was suggested to me. It wasn’t until I walked into their design studio at an open day that I not only realised what I wanted to do, but I also found a place that I felt my creativity belonged. Life from then seems a bit of a whirlwind; I have learnt so much and loved every minute. From my first television job at Eastenders as the Art Department Archivist to my current role as Graphic Designer on Midsomer Murders, I have met a myriad of wonderful people who have been incredibly keen to share their knowledge and so encouraging of the development of my skills and designs. It was on my second job, The Capture, that I discovered my love for graphics. From the moment I read a script and begin to imagine the variety of things I will get to design, to researching existing graphics and how they are made, to learning new skills that allow me to produce convincing designs and finally, seeing the finished product set, I feel an ever-expanding enthusiasm to push myself, my work and my creativity that I didn’t think was possible from a job. I love what I do, not just because of the people I work with and the variety it brings to each day, but also because it allows me to constantly develop my skills and challenge myself. I hope the future brings more work with encouraging teams of creatives who help nurture my creativity and expand my world.

GARY TOMKINS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE ART DEPARTMENT After studying Interior Design at College, my first job in the film industry was Krull in 1982, designed by Stephen Grimes. One of my roles as an Art Department Assistant, (along with the usual making tea and issuing drawings), was to build a white card model of a Castle. Little did I know that many years later another, a much more famous model castle would occupy so much of my time! I’ve been very lucky to work with so many great Designers and Art Directors over the years, on projects taking me from the Jungles of Costa Rica on 1492, to the searing heat of the Abu Dhabi desert on Star Wars-The Force Awakens. Not to mention the oh so glamourous location shoots with Madonna at Peckham Public Baths, (‘Shanghai Surprise’), and with Tom Cruise at an Essex Sewage works, (Edge of Tomorrow)! Part of the joy of working in the Art Dept is the sheer variety of subjects we are called upon to work with, and then attempting to become some kind of short-term expert in those subjects, be it the architecture of Hogwarts Castle on the Potter films, the engineering of a WW1 tank for Warhorse or the dark art of ‘Greeblie’ dressing on a Star Wars Speeder! From period films like Hope and Glory and Sleepy Hollow, to Sci Fi productions such as ‘The Fifth Element’ and Judge Dredd, I have enjoyed every one of the challenges that every subject matter has demanded over the years. One of the things I enjoy most about our job is passing knowledge on to the next generation of Art Dept crew. I’ve worked with so many wonderful people who have helped, encouraged and advised me over the years that I’m keen to pass that same knowledge onto those starting out, both through formal mentoring with various universities and organisations and informally within the Art Department, like simply sweetening the line of a Junior’s drawn moulding by using the phrase, “have you got a bit of trace?”. It’s always very rewarding to see those people move up the ladder and then help others themselves. I’ve been a member of the BFDG for almost as many years as I’ve been in the industry, and I feel humbled that the Guild has honoured me this evening.

JOHN KING LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT My journey in the film industry started before my 16th birthday at Shepperton Film Studios where my father was employed. There were a number of trade apprenticeships available and I opted for carpentry as it involved working in technical drawing which was my underlying passion. In addition to my tech course, I did an additional draughting course that was to put me in good stead for the future. On completion of my apprenticeship, fast forward to 1976 when I started drawing sets for several commercial art directors in various studios – one of whom was Brian Morris who gave me my first start as draughtsman on the 1978 John Schlesinger film 'Yanks'. Following on from 'Yanks', I had the good fortune to work with Dick Sylbert on 'Reds' whose style and finishing techniques from LA gave me a better insight in set design and finishes. A designer whom I worked with again 13 years later on a production called 'Ruby Cairo' in Berlin, Athens, Cairo and Los Angeles. After working on Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' which had some of the most surreal sets to draw, I received a call from Stuart Craig, as you know one of the most talented designers to work on 'Greystoke'. This would be the first of 17 films in which I have worked under Stuart Craig to name some: The Mission, Memphis Belle, Secret Garden, Mary Reilly, Notting Hill, Harry Potter 1 & 2, Fantastic Beasts. I have also had the pleasure of working on 3 Ridley Scott Movies: Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Prometheus. Drawing so many incredible sets from Ridley's concepts and imaginative ideas. There are so many great design projects that I have been involved in – some 74 film productions to date, too many to mention, and have collaborated with so many wonderful art department people, far too many to name both past and present. I am truly flattered beyond words to be singled out for this award by so many talented people in the Guild. I will treasure this award. Thank you all.
