FOUNDATIONS
Spring 2019
WITHIN THESE WALLS It’s been almost two months since Scott Robertson retired and I joined the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes as the new Executive Director. Just before I officially set foot in the building, I had an opportunity to chat with Denis Grignon on Bob FM and I said to Denis, and anyone who has asked me since, that it was an incredible privilege to join this organization – for almost 50 years the club has been serving the community; Scott and the team had built a strong foundation with programs delivered annually to 8,000 children, youth and families at 11 sites throughout the Kawartha Lakes; the community has invested in the development of an incredible facility. This I knew because I had read it or observed from the outside like many others in our community. But to be honest, there was so much I didn’t know before my first day. I didn’t know that the club serves 60,000 healthy meals and over 150,000 snacks each year to children and youth and that in The Warehouse youth facility, young people are learning the essential life skill of food preparation. I didn’t know that our transportation fleet gets kids to and from the club for programs clocking almost 42,000 rides each year and that our regular drivers volunteer their time. I didn’t know that our programs help families address the mental health needs of their children in an effort to prevent more complex challenges down the road, and that we operate an alternative classroom for youth referred by TLDSB or CHIMO. I didn’t know that we have an amazing partnership with local schools so that our programs can be offered throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes and now at two sites in Peterborough. I didn’t know that we have a Youth Justice Committee that is an alternative to formal court proceedings for youth who qualify. I didn’t know that families really do come first here – evidenced by the flexibility offered at our daycare facilities. And I didn’t know that because of our generous foundation donors, no family is ever turned away because they can’t afford to send their child to the club. I’m still learning but I know this: without your support, none of this would be possible. Thank you. Amy Terrill ( Executive Director)

Jeff Beukeboom Charity Classic
Thursday August 1, 2019 Wolf Run Golf Club
The Jeff Beukeboom Charity Classic had its beginnings in the old Cambridge Street location spear-headed by Bill Hughes and Harry Matheis (Matheis and Associates/ an original sponsor). The planning started in ‘93 with the first tournament in ‘94. It was a 9 hole celebrity tournament held at the Lindsay Golf Club. Each foursome golfed with a celebrity with two groups on each hole and finishing in under 6 hours with a roast beef dinner served by ladies from the Legion. The stand out memory was a Hole in One by a Muskie’s player, too young to buy a round of drinks for everyone! The tournament raised $3,600. That number has certainly changed over the years with the support of our generous sponsors and golfers, many of whom have been coming to the tournament for the entire twenty-five years. The tournament now raises over $35,000 with the total raised over the last twenty-four years at $570,500. Brandon Boyer, Lead Sponsor since 2007, had this to say, “We got involved with the tournament because the Boys and Girls Club is such an integral place in our community for our youth and they are our future. I love being able to stop by the club and actually get a feel as to where the money we are donating and helping to raise is going. You guys do such a fantastic job over there and we couldn’t be happier partnering with such a worthwhile organization.” Photo courtesy of Ashley Marie Photography Scott Robertson, Ryan Boyer, Brandon Boyer, Jeff Beukeboom, Michael Boyer
