HIGH FIVE® Principles

A Caring Adult

A Caring Adult who provides unconditional and consistent support is essential during middle childhood. In fact research shows “A Caring Adult” is the most important factor to ensuring a quality experience for children. Children need: • An adult who models appropriate behaviour, • An adult who is respectful and attentive • An Adult who intervenes to protect safety (both emotionally and physically)

HIGH FIVE® Principles Friends

Friends introduce children to a world beyond their family. The research shows “Friends” are the second most important factor to ensure children have a positive experience. Children need: • Opportunities to practice social skills • To feel accepted in a group liked by others • A peer group which models appropriate behaviour

Play Play is the primary occupation of childhood. Children need: • Opportunities for self directed exploration • To be involved in resolving their own conflicts • To use their imagination and be valued for their unique perspectives

HIGH FIVE® Principles Mastery Mastery is important. Children need: • Opportunities to learn new skills and work on existing skills • To be involved in defining success for themselves • Encouragement and recognition when success is partially achieved, or not achieved at all Participation Participation is key. Children need: • To have an empowered voice • To make choices and do things by and for themselves • To know that their participation is valued and sought • Opportunities for leadership and decision-making HIGH FIVE® A quality standard for children’s sport and recreation Founded by Parks and Recreation Ontario

HIGH FIVE® Design Guidelines Developmentally Appropriate

Safe

Welcoming of Diversity & Uniqueness

Design Guidelines are a non negotiable foundation on which the Principles grow and develop. Without their presence all the time, a program cannot achieve high quality.
