Well Generous lleville Healthy Supported lieve

A Message from Our Leaders.

As a caring donor, you are part of a tradition that offers community support to the Belleville General Hospital Foundation. Since the beginning, donations from people like you have transformed the care that patients receive here at Quinte Health’s Regional Secondary Hospital. As we begin to emerge from the global pandemic, your role as a support to the BGH Foundation remains more essential than ever.

In 2022 your philanthropy showed inspiring commitment to our goal, not least at our record breaking Annual Gala, which was a sold out event, attended by dignitaries, community members and business owners. This report spans our fiscal year, from January 1st 2022 to December 31st 2022. In that time, you helped raise almost $3.2M to support the hospital’s highest priority needs across every department here at BGH. But the need does not stop there…

'The Canadian healthcare system continues to make headlines daily. Staff shortages, emergency department closures, supply chain woes and surgical backlogs are just some of the challenges facing hospitals across the province. Like many hospitals both here and across the country, Belleville General Hospital continues to experience these challenges, but with your support we continue to move forward with resilience, adaptation and innovation.

Through wave after wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, your donations never stopped reminding our front line heroes that you stood with them. In fact, there were many times in recent years when our caregivers and Belleville General Hospital colleagues called on us — and you as our donors — to step up and support them with the tools they needed. They’ve asked for tools to provide:

• THE BEST CARE

• THE BEST TECHNOLOGY

• THE BEST SPACE

And you’ve responded!

In doing so, you made a choice to make a difference to the level of care that over 190,000 patients have access to across the Quinte Health catchment. We

are so proud to call you a member of our donor family. As we look to the future, knowing that the pandemic will continue to affect our community for years to come, we thank you for being here with us and for the families of patients we serve. We look forward to continuing to transform healthcare in the heart of our community with you. Together we will strive to create healthier and happier patient outcomes, equipping our healthcare teams for the challenges of tomorrow.

Thank you for your partnership, leadership, and above all, your compassion for our incredible staff who continue to save lives on a daily basis. You championed giving when it mattered most and, this Annual Report serves as a tribute to you, our donors. As a Board and staff base, we offer our sincere gratitude to you for elevating and equipping our hospital, and for ensuring it continues to provide exceptional care close to home. This is an enormous achievement, and clearly demonstrates what community support can accomplish for us all. As the Foundation continues to navigate challenges and uncertainties in the year ahead, as well as the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation's Board and team remain committed to our shared values and mission. We look forward to your continued partnership and championing the support of BGH, Quinte Health's Regional Secondary Hospital.

The Power of Direct Mail

For nonprofits like ourselves, direct mail solicitation is the process of writing, designing, printing, and distributing appeals to households and donors across the region. When these solicitations arrive in your mailbox, we hope they provide a tangible, physical connection between yourself, as a donor, and the organization. Perhaps the most salient aspect of our direct mail appeals is the empathy that our patient stories create, which in turn, provide the Foundation with much needed funds to meet our commitments to the hospital. In recent years your response has been incredible and when crafting these mail pieces with patients who have utilized the services of the hospital, we reply on the following three R’s: Resonance, Relevance and Respect.

Thanks to you and the wider community, we saw an incredible response to our stories in 2022.

“I was playing with my seven-year-old son at the park when I got the call – you have breast cancer.

Dear Friend,

My whole world froze … I was in shock. I am only 37! My boys are 7 and 12.

My son’s voice woke me up – ‘Mom, what is the matter?’

I said to my son, ‘nothing, honey. I am coming to play with you now.’

That was my first day of cancer. I was trying to keep it together. I hope this never happens to you.”

I am Steve Cook, the Executive Director of the BGH Foundation, and this is how Erin started her cancer story with me when I met her.

That’s why I’m writing you today. BGH needs to invest in lifesaving equipment throughout the Hospital.

Investing in life-saving equipment will ensure our health teams are ready to spring into action should you or your loved ones need our care. Will you make your most generous holiday gift of $50, $75 or even $100 today?

I’d be so grateful for you to join our hospital family. Please respond today to pledge your support. Your holiday gift will help so many people.

Erin continued her story. “I was working in a doctor’s office, so I knew how stretched the health care system was after COVID. I was not sure what to expect at BGH. I knew it was the regional cancer centre, but nothing else.

Shortly after the cancer call, I walked through the doors of the Oncology Department for the first time. The whole team hit me with so much love and kindness that I was stunned.

But my care team also told me the truth. My triple-negative breast cancer is aggressive and dangerous. It could mean my tumour would grow rapidly. But what was worse was that it could spread to any part of my body to cause other cancers.

I had a mammogram two weeks after my first visit, showing my tumour had doubled in size. But that was the same day I got hit with my first massive dose of chemo.”

I need you to give today. Cancer will touch every family in our region.

Erin added more to her story, “While in the chair, as the first round of chemo drugs seeped into my body, I thought of my family. My Husband, Tyler, tries not to tear up when we discuss my condition. The poor man watched his mom go through breast cancer.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. Kidney Stones. Severely low platelet count. Any one of these serious health episodes would be cause for concern. Ashley experienced all of those health events — while pregnant — during a global pandemic, no less!

Throughout her pregnancy, Ashley Rushnell became a regular at Belleville General Hospital, and she’s so grateful for the care she received. At 20 weeks pregnant, Ashley was diagnosed with Thrombocytopenia, which causes very low platelet counts. The condition poses serious risks for pregnancy complications. She required routine monitoring and infusion treatments.

But Ashley didn’t just receive routine care in the Maternity Department. By fluke, she also required Emergency care too. Ashley had to be admitted overnight for a terrible case of Kidney Stones. She also had to be taken to the ER — by ambulance — for a terrifying case of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, which required five hours of oxygen treatment.

“A lot of things happened during the pregnancy that weren’t exactly ideal situations,” recalls Ashley. “But I trusted the people who were looking after me. They always had my best interest in mind. Every nurse and doctor went above and beyond to care for me. ‘It’s better to be safe than sorry’ was their motto, and I’m so grateful.”

Driving to success: Fairways For Fractures

The 4th Annual Fairways for Fractures Spring Classic got off to a soggy, but successful, start in June as 172 golfers took to the links in support of the proposed Fracture Clinic Expansion at Belleville General Hospital. Although the forecast rain threatened to halt proceedings, showers failed to dampen spirits as the team delivered a record year for the hugely popular event. With over 53 local business and community sponsors taking part, participants enjoyed a day packed with fun initiatives and prizes, creating a competitive yet relaxing format. Returning title sponsors Alexander Wilson Architects and Guernsey Team Real Estate were just two of the companies credited with the days success.

Quickly becoming known as the region's premium golf experience, the Fairways for Fractures event was born four years ago to support capital investment to accommodate growth of the region’s fracture clinic. As one of Quinte Health's busiest service delivery programs, based at the Belleville General Hospital site, population expansion coupled with a mature demographic mean that future clinic expansion is on the horizon. The clinic currently sees over 12,000 patients per year for conditions ranging from broken bones to hip replacements. Expanding the facility will see accommodation for six surgeons and two ortho techs, allowing for efficient traffic flow thanks to dedicated entry points between examining rooms.

Navigating a challenging course, the participants ‘drove’ the funds raised to a record breaking $96,000 (gross revenue) on the day!

Staff say for exceptional care.

Health care staff were uniquely impacted by the Global pandemic, and having lived through much turmoil, one might expect those same staff to be cautious and protective of their own earnings.

In a remarkable show of confidence and courage, the Belleville General Hospital Staff demonstrated their combined strength in the annual Staff Campaign. Every year the Belleville General Hospital Foundation ask BGH staff and physicians to say “I’m In” for better health care through a staff giving campaign. BGHF is proud to report record breaking results in our 2022 campaign: 100 new participants registered, 30 people have increased their existing donations this year with a total number of participants reaching 468 staff. This amounts to a 20% overall increase in donations for a total of $145,000 raised for vital medical equipment purchases.

Havana Nights Havana Nights hits the high notes at record breaking Gala!

September saw the region’s dignitaries and donors turnout for the return of the Belleville General Hospital Foundation’s 23rd Annual Gala. Following a two-year hiatus our flagship fundraising event welcomed guests back, face to face, at The Grand in Belleville for a night of mojitos, music and mingling to raise important funds for oncology services at the region’s Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Oncology Clinic.

Guests were treated to a Spanish Summer cocktail reception and sumptuous three course dinner before embarking on a fun filled night, of incredible music, courtesy of international showband — The Montreal Rhapsody Orchestra. Having previously toured with Gene Simmons and CeeLo Green, the 11-piece, high energy team of vocalists wowed guests during a two hour set that saw a packed dance floor.

The highlight of the evening, however, was the organization’s ‘Fund a Need;’ hosted by Gala favourite Boyd Sullivan. Guests viewed an emotional feature film presentation from triple negative breast cancer patient Erin Wilkinson, wife of popular Country artist Tyler Wilkinson. The response to Erin’s captivating story was incredible, as guests raised their paddles and pledged a whopping $501,000 in just 30 minutes. To see the community rally in support of the hospital’s regional cancer clinic, with all the oncology team in attendance was humbling.

Replenished by the very members of the community it serves, the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Fund has allowed patients access to cutting edge treatments earlier and allowed the Belleville General Hospital site to provide the same level of care seen in the larger centers, right here close to home.

Your Gifts at Work

Like all hospitals, Quinte Health Belleville General Hospital relies on the generosity of our community members. Government funding does not cover the costs of essential equipment and improvements that are vital to meet your needs. Belleville General Hospital is one of four hospitals within the Quinte Health group; that also includes Trenton Memorial, Prince Edward County Memorial and North

Hastings. While each hospital provides access to core primary care services, such as emergency, acute inpatient beds and diagnostics; Belleville General Hospital’s status as a Regional Secondary facility means we also provide a range of Regional services such as oncology, mental health, children's treatment and intensive care amongst others. See below for a snapshot of where some of your funds went to work this year:

Vital Signs Monitors – $8,511

Inpatient Unit

Vital-signs monitors identify the patient and then read blood pressure, pulse, temperature and oxygen saturation levels at precise intervals. With the push of a button, the information is recorded instantly in the patient’s electronic medical record and can then be easily interpreted.

Echo/ Ultrasound Systems – $352,539 Diagnostic Imaging Department

An ultrasound machine makes images so that organs inside the body can be examined. The machine sends out high-frequency sound waves, which reflect off body structures. A computer receives the waves and uses them to create a picture. Unlike with an x-ray or CT scan, this test does not use ionizing radiation.

We Can Conquer Cancer Together

The Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic at Belleville General Hospital has seen a substantial increase in patients, year-after-year. With approximately 11,000 patient visits per year and an average annual increase in chemotherapy treatments of nearly 13 per cent, the clinic is bustling, to say the least.

The unfortunate reality is that cancer care will remain an integral part of our health care system for the foreseeable future. In Ontario, new cancer cases are predicted to increase by 25.4% over the next 10 years. As people migrate to the area and the prevalence of cancer increases, patient flow has outgrown the original clinic space on Hastings 3 at Belleville General Hospital (BGH). Quite simply, the oncology program here has outgrown the space.

“To be able to continue providing high-quality cancer care close to home, we need to ensure that oncology patients, staff and physicians have sufficient space for treatment and other aspects of their cancer care needs,” said Kristina Cruess, Program Director.

When the pandemic began, the Hastings 3 Main Entrance, which is located right next to the Cancer Clinic, closed. All BGH patients, visitors and staff were required to use other designated entrances. Because this main entrance lobby was

no longer being utilized, the Cancer Clinic was able to use the lobby as a patient waiting area, which helped significantly with patient flow. Moving forward, the former Patient Registration office on Hastings 3 will serve as a dedicated oncology registration space, oncology lab and interprofessional oncology team work area for pharmacy, physicians and clerical staff.

“Some oncology patients come weekly for blood work and having a satellite lab adjacent to the Cancer Clinic provides quick, easy access eliminating the need for oncology patients to walk throughout the hospital in their immunocompromised condition,” said Anke Gilmour.

The BGH Auxiliary Gift Shop, which was located inside the Hastings 3 main lobby has been consolidated with the BGH Auxiliary Tuck Shop on Quinte 3. The former gift shop space has been transformed into an oncology treatment space.

“We are thrilled that we are able to make these changes to enhance cancer care for residents in our communities,” said Kristina. “Increasing the clinic space and creating a dedicated oncology entrance will have a big impact on patient and staff experience. Fighting cancer is hard enough. These simple changes will make things a little bit easier.”

The former Main Entrance in the Hastings Wing officially became the new dedicated Cancer Clinic Entrance in late 2022. This will help to protect vulnerable oncology patients as they receive treatment.

Nuclear Medicine Capital Campaign

For nearly four decades Belleville General Hospital has been pioneering nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology in the Quinte region; advancing the use of cutting edge technology and improving outcomes for patients across the Quinte Health catchment. Since the department of Nuclear Medicine opened in 1979 it has become a diagnostic hub. It is here where the current slate of SPECT - CT cameras have proven their worth to the community. These are the robotic eyes that have performed life saving tests and enabled physicians to diagnose, treat and prevent the advancement of disease for hundreds of thousands of people.

But just as the human eye ages, and can no longer see with the clarity it once did, so too these cameras no longer capture the crisp, clear images of their modern counterparts. That being said, four years ago the Foundation was tasked with initiating a fundraising strategy to support the replacement of the current three cameras into two modern, high performance machines that could address the increasingly complex healthcare needs of an aging population.

Key Reasons For Replacement:

• Only two Nuclear Medicine sites exist across the whole LHIN. An important regional service.

• Nearest alternative sites are Ottawa, Oshawa or Peterborough.

• Service a population of over 160,000 with over 8,000 Nuclear Medicine visits Annually.

Through radiotracers a Nuclear Medicine Scan examines an organ’s function more than it’s anatomy or structure. Because changes in function often occur before changes in structure, nuclear medicine exams are used for assessment of cancer staging, response to therapy (chemotherapy and antibiotics) and the significance of known lesions.

As a community, you have rallied over the past number of years to update advanced diagnostics here in Belleville. CT Scanner and MRI campaigns in 2016 and 2017, respectively, were significant updates to this important area within the hospital. The Nuclear Medicine Cameras really are the next step in ensuring we have the best cancer diagnostics available for patients in this area.

2022 represented a year of unity and appreciation for the regional programs that the Quinte Health Belleville General Hospital carries for patients across the entire catchment. As a Foundation, we submitted two transformational asks this year to both Hastings County and Belleville City Council, citing the need to support services here that catered to the populations of each township. We were thrilled to receive support from each municipality, as a collective in the form a $500,000 pledge, while also securing a seven figure investment from Belleville City council to support breast cancer diagnostics and paediatric services here at the hospital.

Capital Project Accomplished

The Regional Intensive Care Unit Expansion gathered pace in 2022, leading to an early Spring opening in 2023. The department is a critical care unit that provides support to the catchment’s sickest patients, served at Quinte Health hospitals. We are fortunate to have a remarkable ICU team, comprised of staff, physicians and volunteers who will undoubtedly benefit from the three new patient beds on the unit; provided for through donations from across the region. Thanks to donor dollars, this much needed expansion means all ICU patients can be cared for in one expanded ICU — which is preferred for continuity and a team approach to care.

“The Quinte Health ICU expansion has been a positive step forward for our staff, patients and community,” said Dr. Craig Holt, Medical Director of Critical Care. “It has enabled us to provide high level intensive care to the community we serve and has grown our capacity to care for patients close to home. We will strive to continue to evolve our workspace and practices to meet the needs of the Quinte region and our four hospitals.”

The Foundation team is enormously grateful to donors from across our region investing in this much-needed expansion that supports care across the areas served by Quinte Health hospitals. We are particularly thankful to donors contributing to healthcare advances here at the BGH site from the Trenton, Prince Edward County and North Hastings communities. We are also grateful to the provincial government for supporting ICU care and recognizing the importance of this program in Quinte Health’s Regional Secondary Hospital.

With the increased need for care in the communities served by all four Quinte Health hospitals, the ICU continues to be at or above surge capacity most of the time. That is why a larger ICU expansion will be needed in the future. This expansion is an interim measure.

Social Media Success

As more and more people are inspired to donate online, social media has become an extremely important addition to our fundraising and supporter engagement strategy. According to recent industry reports, 29% of people consider social media to be the communication tool that inspires the most giving.

Speaking to the online marketing platforms available, Facebook has appealed to us most due to its ability to support the vast range of individuals and interest groups. We realize that many special

interest communities gather on Facebook, but mostly appreciate the opportunity to run targeted advertising campaigns that give you the most up to date information about the Foundation in the palm of your hand or laptop.

Though social media platforms we have been able to grow a substantial community of supporters that are passionate about ‘keeping exceptional care close to home.’
