We’re here when you need us. For your family and your neighbours. For your friends and colleagues.

A Message from Our Leaders. The roots of healthcare philanthropy run deep within the community. Belleville General Hospital is your hospital. We are there for the joy of childbirth, through minor issues and injuries, and in the face of potentially life threatening illness. We keep you safe and comfortable through your health challenges and milestones. We work to enhance your quality of life, to extend lives, and to ease sufferings and transitions. We’re here when you need us. For your family and your neighbours. For your friends and colleagues. 2019 was a fantastic financial year and with your continued support, we will be here well into the future, offering the highest standards of healthcare for the whole Quinte community. Like all hospitals, we rely on the generosity of our community members. Government funding does not cover the equipment that is vital to meet your needs. It is only through your support that we are able to maintain and improve the quality of every patient’s experience and health outcome. In 2019, the number of patients cared for at QHC hospitals rose by 22,000 compared to 4 years previously. Our region’s population faced greater challenges than the average Ontarian in terms of factors that influence health – most notably, social and environmental influences. Our area has a mature age profile, with more than 23% of the population 65 and older – a figure expected to grow 30% by 2026. Older patients require more complex care, with a higher prevalence of chronic illness.

To address the rising cost of healthcare, last year saw a number of newly implemented ideas and initiatives within the Foundation. The return of the Annual Golf Day – retitled ‘Fairways for Fractures,’ was re-established, providing much needed funds for QHC’s future Fracture Clinic renovation. We also saw the introduction of the $50 Challenge, a regional fundraiser aimed at engaging our community partners. Our ‘Freedom Ride for Healthcare’ saw cycling enthusiasts take on the country roads of Prince Edward County. Our Annual Gala celebrated its 20th Anniversary, raising a record $586,733 during a special ‘Night at the Oscars’ party. Your gifts this past year have helped purchase tools and renovated facilities that healthcare teams count on every day to treat each and every one of us. Along with physicians, surgeons and nurses, in your own way, you are helping to save lives too. The impact of your gifts will be felt well into the future as patients at BGH receive extraordinary care close to home. Thank you for your generosity in 2019 and your ongoing commitment to support patient care at Belleville General Hospital. Yours sincerely,

Mrs. Patricia Guernsey

Be part of a team of committed volunteers who are passionate about making a difference. At the Belleville General Hospital Foundation, our volunteer positions are meaningful and gratifying. Volunteers are invaluable at assisting us with Special Events such as our incredible Gala or supporting us with administrative work and short term projects. In 2019, community members of varying ages, skillsets and ability came together to help us deliver our goals, giving up their time as a means to ‘make a difference.’

I volunteer because I love getting involved in the community. For me, it’s sociable because you always see familiar faces at events and it becomes enjoyable working together. I would encourage anyone to help support the Foundation. It’s rewarding knowing that I help make a difference to the lives of patients and their families. ‑ Jared Bellemare

PATIENT STORY

Giving Tuesday 2019 Giving Tuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday. The “opening day of the giving season,” is a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for their favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community comes together for Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals - to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. Across Canada and around the world, Giving Tuesday unites communities by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another. In 2019, we selected Sarah Dewe as our Giving Tuesday champion. Sarah is a Crohn’s Disease warrior and BGH patient, having been first diagnosed age 19. Now 31 and under the care of Dr. Sean Pritchett, Gastroenterologist at BGH, Sarah led our call to support the purchase of two new colonoscopes for QHC in December. A colonoscopy

is one of the few screening programs that have been shown to save lives by preventing colon cancer when polyps are removed before they become cancerous. Colonoscopies are also useful in the detection of gastrointestinal problems that can lead to bowel diseases such as Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis. As of last year, our current scopes were at the end of their useful life and in constant need of repair. Your contributions towards this campaign not only mean replacements can be sought, but that we can also purchase equipment that is ever improving, evolving and advancing within a healthcare setting.

EQUIPMENT HIGHLIGHT

Nuclear Medicine Cameras

Plans to replace the region’s three nuclear medicine cameras at BGH with two new state of the art machines, took a giant step closer in 2019. The community answered our call for support, donating $1,182,432 towards the $2.9m project. For nearly four decades, BGH’s department of Nuclear Medicine has improved outcomes for patients across Eastern Ontario. Our current slate of Spect CT Cameras has enabled physicians to diagnose, treat and prevent the advancement of serious disease and cancer for tens of thousands of people. But just as the human eye ages and can no longer see with the clarity it once did, so to these robotic eyes no longer capture the crisp clear images of their modern counterparts. A Nuclear Medicine scan examines an organ’s function more than its anatomy or structure and plays a crucial role in the early detection of cancer. Diagnosing cancer in its earliest stages helps save the lives of our friends, colleagues and family members! Serving patients from Brighton to Napanee, Prince Edward County to Bancroft, the BGH Nuclear Medicine Department is headed up by Dr. Rene Barrett. We hope that you never need to use the Nuclear Medicine department, but for those who do, the impact you and other donors make through your generosity will ensure our team of technologists continue to provide exceptional care close to home. The Canadian Association of Radiologists recommend equipment replacement at 8-12 years. The current cameras at BGH are 13 years and 17 years respectively.

Fairways for Fractures After a short hiatus, the Foundation’s Annual Golf tournament made a successful return to Black Bear Ridge in 2019, courtesy of title sponsors Williams Hotels and Alexander Wilson Architects. The tournament raised funds, through sponsors & players to help facilitate the renovation of Belleville General Hospital’s Fracture Clinic. Close to 100 golfers braved the rain in support of the $375,000 project, which was supported earlier in the year with a $100,000 pledge from the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary. As a four year event, the Tournament seeks to help one of the busiest clinics in the QHC system, treating around 14,000 patients annually. Expanding the facility will see accommodation for 6 surgeons and 2 ortho techs, allowing for efficient traffic flow thanks to dedicated entry points between examining rooms. Thanks to the team’s drives, chips and putts $88,250 was raised (gross revenue) on the day!

BGH Staff say ‘I’m in’ for better healthcare. In the Fall of 2019, we asked BGH staff the same question we ask donors, ‘Do you want exceptional healthcare, close to home?’ For many, the response was ‘YES’ as departments rallied their peers to sign up for our annual Staff Campaign. Over 436 staff pledged their support by donating to our staff campaign, a number which has grown year on year. This figure represents a 30% uptake across our BGH staff base, which highlights the incredible dedication of our healthcare teams. The highlight for us this year was reaching out to the community and forming more fantastic partnerships with local businesses. A special thank you to Belleville Integrated Health Centre for coming on board as the Staff Campaign Sponsor and to Bell coming on as the Title Sponsor for our new ‘Wellness Fair’. The Wellness Fair featured as a reminder for staff to look after their own personal wellbeing. Businesses operating within the health and wellness sector joined us to showcase their products, offerings and services, sharing our own core values of working together for better health. The event was a great way to engage staff, helping us to drive total revenue to a record breaking $103,894! If you are looking for a simple way to support the BGH Foundation, signing your business up to a payroll deduction plan makes giving easy, directly from your salary. Record Night at the Oscars!

It was a ‘show stopping’ performance at the BGHF Gala in 2019, when partygoers celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Foundation’s annual flagship event. Revelers turned out in force for a ‘A Night at the Oscars’, with over 300 guests dining, dancing and donating for BGH. The event was made possible by title sponsors McDougall Insurance & Financial and TD Bank Group and amassed over $586,733 (Gross Revenue) on the evening, breaking previous records by some margin. Honorary Chair, Ross McDougall was on hand to reflect on previous events and the valued committee members who have helped deliver a host of fantastic themed evenings over the years. While the bulk of the money raised goes towards BGHF’s annual replacement equipment pledge to QHC, our ‘Fund a Need’ portion of the evening had a special focus this year; securing funds for our Nuclear Medicine Camera Project. Mark Philbin, of 95.5 Hits FM, led the proceedings with a passionate call to action for community members in the room. The response was phenomenal, as guests raised their paddles to commit a whopping $349,520 towards the machines that will help diagnose cancer in its earliest stage for the region. Guests in attendance included Catherine and Lanny Huff and Maurice Rollins who themselves had contributed generous Leadership Gifts to the cause earlier on in the year.

Business Community put B G H F $50 the ‘FUN’ in Fundraising CHALLENGE

Last year saw the launch of our brand new 3rd party fundraising campaign – ‘The $50 Challenge.’ As a three month initiative, kicking off on March 1st, the concept afforded local businesses the opportunity to generate as much money as possible for new equipment and programs here at BGH. Led by Fundraising Events Officer, Ingrid Moore, the campaign was spearheaded by Guernsey Team Real Estate who agreed to match the first $10,000 raised, dollar for dollar! In total, 37 companies signed up to turn the $50 ‘funny money’ we gave them into real cash! Each business was issued a fundraising kit to start them off, with the intention to grow that as much as possible within the three-month window. We saw some fantastic ideas, from spinathons and dress down days to burger contests and bake sales. It was amazing to see the business community embrace the concept and show their support, raising an incredible $38,206! The campaign will return each Spring, so join the fun at our next launch!

Vital Signs machines in the Oncology Clinic

Arthroplasty power tool sets are the tools of human carpentry. Used by Orthopedic surgeons in the operating room for procedures such as hip and knee replacements, they can cut, shape and dissect bone where necessary.

Vitals are a group of 4–6 of the most important medical signs on a patient that indicate the status of the body’s life sustaining functions. These machines assess the general physical health of a person.

Colonoscopes for the Operating Room

Bladder Scanner

Colonoscopies are common outpatient procedures where these flexible tube type cameras check for abnormalities or disease in your lower intestine or colon.

A Bladder Scanner is a portable, hand held ultrasound device, which can perform a quick and easy non-invasive look inside the bladder. They are particularly useful to determine a patient’s urinary volume.

You made a Significant Difference! Generous individuals and businesses throughout the region organized and hosted more than 60 events that generated over $191,000 for patient care at BGH. Whether you organized a baseball tournament, sold cookies, hosted a cruise, rode your bike or tee’d off, YOU helped raise money that supports better health care, close to home at BGH.

BGH Intensive Care Unit (ICU) expansion set for 2020 following Leadership donation The 14 bed BGH Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was constructed in 2006 and, while it was well designed for the hospital’s needs at the time, it is now undersized for the service we provide for our region. In recognition of this service pressure, QHC received operational base funding last year, allowing for additional beds to be developed. Consequently, an application was submitted to the Ministry of Health to expand the physical space by four beds. Financially, the planned expansion forms part of BGHF’s capital campaign goals in 2020 when further information will be released to the community. 2019 saw a Leadership level gift issued by The Parrott Foundation, which was the first component of a regional initiative that will see QHC improving healthcare for the most vulnerable patients arriving at the Belleville General Hospital.

YOU Funded Cutting Edge Cancer Treatment One in three Canadians are diagnosed with cancer in their life time and in our community. Regardless of where you live, if you or a loved one have cancer, you will most likely be visiting the Oncology Department at Belleville General Hospital. In 2014/15, the New Drug Funding Program and Ontario Drug Benefit program combined covered more than $644-million in cancer drugs. Spending on cancer drugs has continued to grow not only because the number, cost and complexity of the available treatments is increasing, but also because of the growing rate of the disease. We estimated in 2014 that 834,750 more people in Ontario will be diagnosed with cancer before 2023.

Improving survival rates, population growth and aging, means ever increasing numbers of Ontarians will be living with cancer into the future. While new provincial drug funding programs cover the majority of this rising price tag at no cost to the patients, the process for approval of new therapies can lag behind the research that supports it, creating a gap in patient care. The Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Fund, replenished by the members of the very community it serves, has allowed our oncologists to bridge that gap in time and help offset the cost of new therapies while funding decisions are being made by the country and the province. Since 1979, the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Fund within BGHF has allowed the members of this community to have access to cutting edge treatments earlier and has given our cancer clinic the flexibility to provide the same excellent level of care as in the larger centres, right here close to home.

Going forward, however, new therapies are becoming available faster and in larger quantities. This has resulted in constraints on the flexibility and availability of the cancer fund, forcing us to revisit our selection process to ensure that resources are used for those who need it most. Clearly, the continuous replenishment and guaranteed sustainability of the cancer fund has become more pressing than ever as we strive to provide cutting edge, consistent care to all patients and not just a select few.
