ayley Sykes, 21, from Leicester, is not only a beauty pageant finalist but also our latest cover girl. Hayley arrived with her younger sister, a little apprehensive about the day ahead but ready and raring to go. After a long coach journey, Hayley looked relieved to finally be on location. Throughout the shoot, Hayley was a complete professional, and her images reflect her shining personality. Here, we find out a bit more about our cover girl star and the person behind the photos.
Hobbies and interests I enjoy the simple things in life, such as spending time with my boyfriend and my family. I love to read, mostly anything but most of the time I come home from work and just watch films with my boyfriend, Dan, which I think is almost perfect. Although, I spend most Fridays out with my friends having fun dancing and singing at our local. I love to sing; I’m always singing in the shower, in the car, on the bus, just walking down the street, music is a massive part of my life and a big support and inspiration. 8 - BGP Magazine www.biggirlsparadise.com
Ambitions I have so many it’s hard to compile a list. Mainly, I want to design lingerie for plus size women, I believe every girl should feel sexy. I want to change the opinion that to be plus size means you’re not attractive. The right underwear can make you feel stunning; I want to give people that feeling.
Fashion A bit of everything really, I like the girly rock look. I like flowers in my hair, leather and lace, modern vintage. I like clashing styles together to make a unique look. I think it’s important to dress your personality and be an individual.
Inspirations and idols I have many idols all for different reasons, I adore the beautiful model, Velvet D’Amour for the amazing work she does in showing people size is not in the description>>
www.biggirlsparadise.co.uk BGP Magazine - 11
I felt like a star, it gave me such a confidence boost of beauty. The amazing makeup artist and model Priscilla Ono, who did a beautiful job of a high fashion shoot for Slink magazine. I love Marilyn Monroe; she was beautiful, talented, and extremely clever but seemed humble and just wanted the same as every other girl, love. I’m also inspired by the fictional character Rocky, he has the most heart and perseverance I have ever seen and won’t stop, no matter what it costs him, until he achieves his dreams.
The Cover Girl Experience It was an amazing experience, really like nothing else I have done. I felt like a star, it gave me such a confidence boost. I never thought I would ever have the chance to do something like that. I was shown one of the pictures and almost cried because of how beautiful it looked. The photographers were amazing and very patient with me as I had no idea what I was doing!
Hair and Makeup The girls that did my hair and makeup were fantastic, they made me look and feel so beautiful. There were so many different looks and it took a long time to get the shots right, my favourite shoot was the rockabilly look, I felt gorgeous. It was a strange experience to be the centre of attention; it is so alien to me. The people involved really made the day amazing and made sure I had a fantastic time.
Favourite memory It’s so hard to pick a favourite part but I think it was the way it made me feel, it felt like I was living someone >>
else’s life. I felt utterly beautiful, the whole experience was mind-blowing. I never really thought of myself as beautiful and then all of a sudden I’m a cover girl, it is one of the best experiences of my life so far.
BECOMING A FINALIST When I found out I was a finalist in Miss Plus Size International I was shocked, I was checking my phone repeatedly but really didn’t think I would be picked out of all the beautiful girls in the running. When the results were posted I wasn’t even looking for my name, I was looking for the names of the girls in my group at the interviews. Then, I saw my name and had to recheck about 10 times. I actually can’t describe what was going through my head; I was ecstatic and couldn’t believe I had been chosen for this.
INSPIRATION FOR APPLYING I decided to apply for Miss Plus Size International because I wanted to be in a position to make a difference to girls going through what I went through as a teenager, trying
to change the way they look to fit in. I think there are many kinds of beautiful in world and I don’t only want to represent plus size women but all the girls that feel they have to look a certain way to be considered beautiful. However, not for one minute did I even think I would get through the first stages.
The Grand Final I am so excited for the final of the pageant; I can’t wait to see all the other girls dressed up looking amazing. While it would be extraordinary to win, I would be happy for any of the girls to be crowned, they are all exceptional ambassadors and any one of them would make an outstanding queen.
The Opportunity This pageant means everything to me, I never believed I would even have got this far. I am so thankful I have been given the chance to be an ambassador for plus size women and to represent this pageant but to be crowned, would be the most overwhelming and phenomenal thing to ever happen to me. >>
CONFIDENCE IN Plus Size Being confident is so important, so many girls develop a distorted perception of their bodies, what they are supposed to look like and fall victim to self-harm, depression, eating disorders and low self-esteem. It is our job as ambassadors to help girls achieve body confidence and realise being different isn’t always a bad thing.
FUTURE ADVICE If I could give advice to anbody who is thinking of applying for Miss Plus Size International 2014 I would say fight for your dreams and don’t give up until you achieve them. If you try hard enough anything you desire is possible, I hope my story shows this. If you are interested in becoming a future cover model for BGP Magazine, please email us at least 3 images including one full body shot and a few details about yourself to hello@bgpmagazine.co.uk.

M Finalists.
any people have had opportunities to follow their dreams, but I feel so lucky to have been given this role as the official Mentor for the 25 Miss Plus Size International 2013
June 2012 was when I found out that I had been chosen as one of the 20 finalists for the Miss BBW International contest, I couldn’t believe it. I was 46 years old, spent most of my life working predominately in computers or male environment, single and now being told that I have got through to the finals of a competition that was the equivalent to Miss Universe ( Plus Size). UNBELIEVABLE.

When I was first told I kept it to myself for about 5 minutes then I had to tell the world that Lady G, aka, George, Gina, Georgina and if anyone was shocked hearing the news, they were about to be shocked some more. Every single one of these Ladies have a formidable story of strength to tell. They ooze femininity grace, beauty and confidence.

but to also give them my experience in life coaching. All the ladies have impressed me so much and I am so glad not to be a judge this year because its a real tough call. I can quite confidently say EVERY ONE of them are true Ambassadors for the Plus Size Community and watch this space because I believe they will all be making a formidable and positive mark for the community in months to come. Thank you Linda but above all THANK YOU LADIES for making your Mentor so proud.

FRIDAY We arrived at the beautiful Croydon Hall that was set in a very rural location, tucked away amongst endless rolling hills. A couple of hours later, the contestants started to arrive, and despite the drizzly rain, smiled at the cameras as they crossed the car park with their suitcases. That night, the girls were treated to a champagne reception and were all excited to be with one another again. Georgina Hawes, and judges Mark Singh and Derrick Locker joined organiser Linda Koch for a welcome speech, the girls were treated to an insider video of Linda doing her rendition of Gangnam style and Georgina mimicking ‘Aint no body got time for that’. After a packed afternoon and evening, the girls went to their rooms, excited about the following day.
SATURDAY We woke to a glorious sunny day, and went down to have breakfast. The contestants all looked very glamorous and all worthy of the crown as they sat around a long table laughing with one another. Some girls were already in hair and makeup for their photo shoot with fashion photographer and model herself, Velvet D’Amour, the other girls were getting ready for their media training. In the vast hair and make up room, girls were discussing their outfits and their excitement for their photo shoots. The outfits the contestants had bought with them for their photo shoots amazed us. They all looked glamorous, polished to perfection, and looked great on camera! Back in media training, the finalists all sat and talked, via webcam, with Alley Einstein, who told them how the should conduct themselves in front of the media. After a short break, the girls were called back into the large room for their catwalk training with Fabia Cerra. Walking in front of their peers must have been nerve wracking, however all the contestants managed to ‘strut their stuff’ down the length of the hall in front of two camera crews and photographers. Shortly after, the girls gathered in the dining room and discussed how much they were enjoying the day so far, over a buffet lunch. After lunch, the contestants went to their burlesque workshop, where the fabulous Fabia Cerra taught them some sultry burlesque moves. Feathers littered the floor as the girls danced with their Boas. Outside, a few girls were having their photo shoots, and despite the heat 22 - BGP Magazine www.biggirlsparadise.com
were enjoying their time in the spotlight with Velvet D’Amour. The contestants had a couple of hours spare before a sit down dinner. Luckily, Croydon Hall has a gorgeous swimming pool, and a few of the girls braved the cool water, while others took the chance to catch some rays. During dinner the girls laughed and joked with the one another while they sat around the long table in the dining room.
SUNDAY After a filling breakfast, the girls started packing their suitcases. The sun was beaming down as the contestants gathered in the garden for photographs and goodbyes. They were all really happy and excited about the grand final, but sad to be leaving one another. After the last contestant went, it was time for the staff to pack up and go home as well. It was a fantastic weekend and we can’t wait for the grand final in November!
Meet the Finalists BGP Magazine finds out more about each finalist and why they should be crowned Miss Plus Size International 2013
Aijannah Di Nisci - 21, London “With my love of food it’s no surprise that I’ve maintained a plus size frame throughout my life, and accompanying that frame is a plus size personality. I’m known primarily for making people laugh, having blonde dreadlocks and my cooking. Being in the pageant has given me a new sense of appreciation for my body and the way in which I view it. Being comfortable in the skin you are in, and actively loving the skin you’re in are two different things, and if I win this is something I want to promote to everyone of all shapes and sizes.”
Ally Woodward - 26, Wales “MPSI is an inspirational adventure where I’ve learnt so much! I didn’t want to say life changing as that’s a pretty bold statement, but it’s true. I’ve twirled, shaken, and strutted myself into a realisation of my own selfworth, all thanks to the journey I’ve been blessed with! For every woman who ever felt overlooked, ugly, too fat to be loved, I’m here to tell you just how beautiful you really are. I want to make it my mission to support and encourage women to love who they are, and not push themselves into being anything else. Ladies, it’s about time we rocked those legs, bums and tums instead of hiding them!”
24 - BGP Magazine www.biggirlsparadise.com
Cathryn Vallance - 20, Essex “Entering this competition for a second time took confidence, and that’s what this pageant has given me. Confidence, acceptance and passion, not just confidence in myself, but self acceptance of who I am, and understanding that everyone is different and perfect the way they are. Why me to win? I’m everything this competition stands for. I’m proud, confident, vibrant, and ready to be an ambassador for all the wonderful plus size women, showing no matter how many obstacles you cross with faith in yourself, you can do and be anything.”
Danielle Jurd - 21, Southampton “As a size 26 female, I am passionate about the rights of all women. This competition is inspiring, and I relish the opportunity to be part of it and enable all women to realise their beauty... I love it! I have been plus size my whole life, and have always wanted to be accepted. Thankfully confidence in myself is not something I lack, however I wish more women could be confident and love the skin they are in! This truly is my mantra, and what I wish to achieve from this amazing competition. We all do deserve to be happy!”
Georgina Pritchard, 20 – Staffordshire “I have enjoyed this journey and the many opportunities that Miss Plus Size International 2013 has given me, it has also given me the chance to have met 30 beautiful and intelligent women, that I am sure I will be friends with for the rest of my life. I should win because I am strong, plus size woman who stands up for what she believes in. As the winner, I will be the voice for millions of women tall, big, short and thin, and I will be helping society change its mind and show that all women are beautiful.”
Hannah Gobles, 21 – Portsmouth “Since I decided to apply, this experience has been life changing, a dream come true, and a fabulous confidence booster! I`m honoured to have been selected to be in something this big, and show people that even though I may be larger, I can still achieve my goals and fully enjoy life. I feel I should win because the plus-size community means so much to me, and I’m willing to stand up and demonstrate that you can be healthy, happy, large and in charge!”
www..biggirlsparadise.com BGP Magazine - 25
Hayley Sykes, 20 – Leicester “Since taking part in Miss Plus-Size International 2013, my confidence has grown immensely. I think there is too much pressure on girls to conform, to lose weight, to gain weight, to get the gap between their thighs. I want to show people that it’s okay to just be you. I think there are many different kinds of beautiful in the world and if I win, I don’t only want to represent plus-size women but everyone that feels they have to look a certain way to be considered beautiful.”
Jacqueline Brady, 22 – Liverpool “I am a confident, curvaceous, kind loving person. I celebrate people’s inner beauty. Anyone can alter the way they look, but deep down they’re the same person. You only get one body in this life so we need to enjoy it, and look after it. I truly believe that once you learn to love and adore the person you are, your natural beauty shines through. This is the message we should be passing down to the next generation! I’m so proud of myself and all the other girls for showing there is so much beauty in the world in a variety of shapes and sizes!”
Janet Miller - 25, Fife “Meeting so many confident, beautiful women who aren’t ashamed of their size, and don’t care what people think of them, has inspired me to push myself even more to make my point that a person doesn’t have to be what society tries to make us. No two people are the same, and loving myself shouldn’t be an issue for anyone but me. Winning isn’t everything, and this experience has taught me so much, but if I did win I don’t think I’d ever stop smiling. I would love nothing more than to make others feel comfortable about themselves no matter what size they are . Winning wouldn’t just be life changing to me but also to society as this pageant WILL make an impact!”
Joanna Rand, 19 – Essex “I’m a Carer to my mum, who has MS, and I’m also a full time mum to my cheeky chappy Logan, who is 8 months old but thinks he’s 3. I don’t want to sit here and tell you why I should win, because you will make your own mind up about who you think is worthy, instead I would just like to tell you what winning would mean to me. EVERYTHING!!! It would mean I could look back at my life with pride, pride because I had the courage to stand up for something I believe in. And I truly believe that beauty is not a word easily defined.”
www..biggirlsparadise.com BGP Magazine - 27
Jodie Adams, 25 – London “The experience has been amazing for so many reasons. One of the main reasons is the confidence and acceptance this competition has given me, especially at boot camp. It has made me feel even more comfortable with the way I am. If I don’t want to change then I don’t have to, and that in its self is such a weight lifted. I think I should win because I can prove no matter what size you are, with the right attitude and confidence you can achieve anything, and that’s exactly what I intend to do.”
Kerensa Smith - 40, Bedfordshire “ I’m very proud to be a finalist in Miss Plus Size International, I have always felt confident, and lead an adventurous, varied life. I am a professional croupier and have my own fun casino events business’ but also love the countryside and ride horses on the family farm. I am into big motorbikes, travelling, singing and spending time at sea. I would love to be crowned MPSI 2013, and use the platform Linda Koch has given me to show the world what plus size girls are all about and inspire other people to follow there dreams regardless of age and size, and to see all things are possible in this life.”
Laura Gentles, 24 – Country Durham “This is a life changing experience and is opening doors within my life. I have newly discovered confidence and belief, and formed new friendships within MPSI. I have battled agoraphobia and anxiety, due to life’s hardships, but I overcame that to become a strong, confident woman, ready to show the world that you can be fat and fabulous. My passionate ambition is modelling and inspiring women of all shapes and sizes internationally, and I’m finally doing it! I would be a positive ambassador for plus size women, and it would be an honour to hold the title of MPSI 2013.“
Lexy Hudson - 25 , Oxfordshire (Romania) “Being a MPSI finalist means I’m now a beauty queen and plus-size ambassador spreading body confidence, self contentment and sparkles everywhere I go. Since I entered this competition, I shine. I now have experience in cat walking, I’ve been a model, I gained friends for life and most important I want to inspire other plus size women to realise they are all fabulous, amazing and beautiful no matter their shape and size. Winning the competition would mean the fairytale will continue even further. I want to change people’s preconceptions about plus size women. I want to show everyone I am a confident, strong, intelligent, ambitious and sexy woman.”
28 - BGP Magazine www.biggirlsparadise.com
Lizzie Mclnerney - 26, Northern Ireland “I didn’t think that I would be chosen for something as inspiring as Miss Plus Size International. The experience so far has completely changed the way I think and do things. I hold my head up high when I leave the house, and I have a constant smile on my face. Meeting everyone has been an amazing opportunity. I’m grateful for this chance to shine. To win would mean everything to me. It would prove everyone wrong, and show that I can achieve something great. I think I would be a good role model for woman all over the world, and not just this generation but the next generation of young, beautiful women to come.”
Marvia Cunningham - 51, Milton Keynes “My experience began the day I completed the application to enter the Miss Plus Size International competition. Once chosen as one of the 30 finalists, I realised that I was the oldest woman there. The encouragement I received from close friends and family especially my sons has been second to none. Meeting the other contestants at boot camp and the programme that followed is another experience I will never forget. I should win because I am Marvellous, Articulate, Reliable, Vivacious, Interesting and Adventurous and I would like to encourage all those who feel they have past it, because they haven’t.”
Melanie Yaffie - 45, Glasgow “It’s incredible how my life changed overnight COMPLETELY! Taking that one small step leading to my destiny. A place I never dreamt of... but feels like home. This whole experience was waiting to define me... My Purpose... My Life... I want to change the way we are perceived by society! To be acknowledged as beautiful, confident, sexy, intelligent and creative women. I am raring to do my bit for the cause, to be an icon, an ambassador, to inspire and help the countless big girls who need guidance, who need confidence, who need a voice. Together we CAN achieve this.”
Michaela Bliss - 42, Essex “My experience so far has been absolutely amazing, the team at MPSI have been so supportive. I think I should WIN MPSI because I would make a fantastic ambassador for the plus size community... I want to tell the world we are human, and although we are larger in size, we have personalities to die for. I believe ANYTHING is possible no matter what size you are. I have worked hard to help people accept who they are, I believe that my personality has got me through every stage of my life, I am what I am, and will not be changing for anyone... I have lost weight before but missed the cake too much!”
30 - BGP Magazine www.biggirlsparadise.com
Nastaran Kowkabi - 26, Norway “Being chosen as a finalist in this pageant has brought me closer to my goal of changing the world and societies perception of beauty . To most people this industry is shallow, and it is easy to believe that it is all about looks, but with this position there is also a huge responsability. I do not believe that I am a representative only for big women, but for all women. I represent selfbelief, confidence and strength and most important of all I want to inspire and motivate others to see their full potential and to see how beautiful they really are – regardless of size! Motto: When life gives you curves - Flaunt them!”
Natalie Punter - 20, Liverpool “This has been one of most inspiring, positive experiences. It’s amazing being part of something that shows plus size people can do anything, emphasizing that it’s okay to be different to society’s typical image of beauty, because at the end of the day, everyone’s drop dead gorgeous in their own right. You’ve just got to own it. I’d like to be crowned MPSI because I think I could be a good role model for other people who aspire to change the perceptions of society, but even if I’m not crowned I’ve made some of the bestest friends in this pageant, so in a way I’m already a winner.”
Sarah Martindale -25, Liverpool “I entered this competition because I want to become a positive role model to people who feel they don’t fit ‘the beauty standard’. Since entering I have spoken with many women who struggle to love themselves and their bodies and instead spend so much time and energy berating themselves for the way they look. I want to win this competition because I would love the chance to interact with and inspire many more to find their confidence and feel wonderful. I believe that everyone deserves to feel amazing.”
Sian Yapp -23, Worcestershire “In my spare time I like to sing and paint/draw. Mainly the human form and faces. I also take part in an annual charity event held in my local community which we fundraise for throughout the year. I am a strong believer in that everyone has a right to love themselves; nobody has the right to make you feel like any less of a person because you don’t fit into a small box deemed as “normal”. I am proud to be a part of Miss Plus Size International 2013, and be around women who share the same beliefs as I do.”
www..biggirlsparadise.com BGP Magazine - 31
Siobhan Fellas - 25, Lowestoft “This experience for me has been amazing! To be chosen out of over 900 applicants to be in the final, with 27 other girls, was definitely a big confidence boost! Meeting the other girls has been amazing, meeting like minded people and so many confident women has really made me proud to be a woman, plus size, and a finalist! I want to influence other women to be body positive, no matter what size you are, also to all the mums out there, who may be lacking in confidence after having a baby, you still look fabulous! I also bring something a little different, I’m an individual and I like to express that through my tattoos, clothing, piercings and hair!”
Tolani Ogunlade - 20, Essex “The experience so far has been something you’d only dream about. For such an opportunity, I can only thank God. I’m not here to simply make a statement, but to make a difference. It’s all about crowning curves and confidence. I don’t believe I can change everything, but I believe I can make a certain change in the industry. I understand it’s not easy being big, and there are many trials and tribulations that can come with being a certain size. But I do believe there is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is determination of purpose, the knowledge of what you want, and a burning desire to possess it.”
Verity Brown - 37, Birmingham I had always wanted to be in a beauty pageant and model, so this was my chance! The other beautiful finalists are all wonderfu,l and I have made some friends for life. The organizers of the pageant are so passionate about what they do, and have truly made this a wonderful experience. I don’t want other women to go through life being told that they have a pretty face but should lose weight, or being told that they should wear clothes that are more flattering to their figure. I hope taking part in this competition and sharing my journey can inspire other plus size women to feel better about themselves and improve their self confidence and self esteem.”

The next big thing in plus size fashion
Charlotte Hatt W
e met Charlotte in a small fashionable bar in Oxford Street, Southampton, just a couple of metres away from the large white marquee where she would be show casing her plus size collection in a graduate fashion show. She had rushed in after having to make a quick last minute dash to the local shopping centre for some accessories to compliment her 50’s style final collection. Smiling broadly, the 21 year old from North London looked relieved to be sat down.
www..biggirlsparadise.com BGP Magazine - 39
Click here to watch a video of Charlotte’s catwalk collection It’s great to finally meet you and congratulations on your Big Apple collection. All of the models look absolutely amazing. How are you finding the catwalk experience so far? It’s a little stressful and we have had a few last minute panics but I’m so excited to see my clothes on the runway. There has been months of work and effort gone in to making all the garments, so it will be very rewarding to see the final outcome on the models. The models were very hard to find but luckily these 6 girls travelled from across the country to showcase my collection.
We can imagine! What does fashion mean to you? I think a lot of people think that fashion is superficial, and that every 6 months you have to completely reorder your wardrobe, and that it is just so much stress! I think fashion is an extension of your personality, if we were all naked, no one would know anything about you!
That’s a good way of looking at it. How would you define your personal style? I quite like Minnie Mouse, I like cutsey young, quite 50’s, I like anything that really puffs out.
What was your inspiration for your collection? It was meant to be just a plus size body in general, the curving round the body and the idea of enhancing it rather than hiding it away. I wanted to get away from tunics and black, I wanted it to be as shapely as possible. Although, I was sat in a 50’s style diner after I had finished my collection and thought, my shorts look a bit like that chair over there! So it kind of looks a bit retro and 50’s!
“
I was advised by teachers to do a smaller collection, it was a bit of a battle. well and are flattering at the same time.
They are rather fabulous shorts. How has your collection been received? Online, I’ve had an overwhelming response from plus size bloggers; It’s really lovely to hear people saying how much they love the collection. Before I put my collection online, I was getting 20 views a day on my blog, now I’m getting 700!
We love the retro look! What is your favourite piece from your collection?
That’s a big leap! You must be thrilled to have so many new followers. How have your lecturers and fellow students received your collection?
Probably the red shorts. I think it’s so hard to find highwaisted shorts and I was so happy that these fit really
It’s been really difficult, because I’ve done size 22, it’s very specific and large, so when I was advised by teachers
www..biggirlsparadise.com BGP Magazine - 41
to do a smaller collection and it was a bit of a battle, but the other people on my course have been really supportive and helpful.
It’s great that you stood up for what you believe in. In the fashion industry, a size 12 is considered plus size. What do you, personally, class plus size as? I would say a size 18. Below that you can shop pretty much everywhere. There are a few online retailers now that are definitely the best thing to have ever happened to plus size fashion.
With there being a gap in the market, what do you think the plus size clothing industry is missing?
“
Young clothes! I think plus size clothes tend to be quite shapeless, old fashioned, usually really dark and no fun! I think plus size clothes need to liven up a bit and catch up with the rest of the fashion world.
What do you enjoy about working with plus size clothes? The fact that I can get to wear it! I kept thinking, have I made the right decision, but then I could never have done a collection smaller, that I couldn’t have fitted into myself because it wouldn’t have been any fun!
Plus size clothes are dark and no fun, they need to catch up.
If you could design an outfit for a celebrity, who would you love to design for? Plus size or other? I would love to design the stage wear for someone like Katy Perry, who often wears very bold and creative stage outfits! Plus size wise, probably Adele, that would be amazing for her to go to an award night and say “Oh I’m wearing Charlotte Hatt!”
Putting you on the spot, what would you design for her? I think I’d design her a really bright, colourful 50’s style dress, a bit like a red and black Valentino dress I saw her in a while ago, just brighter! She has such beautiful features and is very glamourous, it would be an honour.
That sounds amazing! Who is your favourite designer? I love everything about Luella Bartley! And recently, Neiman Marcus, they’ve done some really pink and girly garments for Topshop. I love anything feminine and colourful.
Are you going to continue to design plus size or do you think you’ll design smaller clothes? I think I’m going to stick with designing plus size clothes, but I am keeping my options open at the moment. I do feel like there is a gap in the plus size market and that I have something to offer the plus size industry. I have also been incredibly lucky in that I have an apprenticeship with Anna Scholz, who is such an inspiration to me.
Well, we wish you the very best of luck with it and we look forward to seeing more of your collections in the near future! Thank you, it’s been a pleasure! Having a pear shape means you are bottom heavy and have small elegant shoulders and arms. A straight figure, otherwise known as ‘banana’ or ‘atheletic’, can seem like a bit of a challenge, but actually, ‘straights’ should find dressing the easiest. CHEEKS
Firstly, using a pea-sized amount, start by applying your foundation with your foundation brush evenly in circular motions, careful not to cake as a little goes a long way. I have used Rimmel Lasting Finish 25hour Foundation in ‘Ivory 100’. Set your foundation with your powder, I use Rimmel Stay Matte Long Lasting Pressed Powder in ‘Ivory 100’.
Apply your blusher by smiling gently and brushing it onto the highest part of your cheekbone, downwards, following your cheekbone, blending the edges into your powder. Put your bronzer under the cheekbone to give your face definition and highlight your features, blend into the powder. Et Voila! You’re ready to start applying the fun stuff!
58 - BGP Magazine www.biggirlsparadise.com
EYES Start by using a shimmery light pink eye shadow, I’m using the Sleek Original eye shadow palette. Cover your whole lid up to the crease in the shimmery pink and extend it upwards slightly so the colour just touches the brow bone. Take a medium/rich purple eye shadow and frame the outer corners of the shimmery pink about one centimetre is perfect, it’s not essential that they are totally even. Taking your blending brush, start to brush the purple into the pink, being careful not to spread it too far inwards, to the middle of your eyelid is perfect. Next, start to softly blend the edges of the purple to make it slightly smoky around the edges. Once you’re happy with your eye shadow, start to apply liquid eyeliner (I use
Rimmel Exaggerate in ‘100% Black 001’) thinly from the centre of your pupil to the edge of your eyelid, make a small flick on the end upwards about ½ a centimetre. Apply mascara and eyebrow pencil if required.
LIPS For the lips, line with a neutral pink, I use Maybelline Colour Sensational Lip Liner in ‘Sweet Pink 132’ and apply pink shimmery lipstick, I use Collection 2000 Volume Sensation Lipstick in ‘Sea Shell 10’. Now you have a cute, feminine look that you can use during the day or at night!

All there is to know about
flirting
Y
ou’re standing at the bar in your favourite dress, sipping your favourite cocktail and your eyes happen to wander over to the handsome man standing by the dance floor. The lights are down low, the music turns to something a little more... romantic. He’s just your type, on his own and you decide that you want to get his attention, but where do you go from here? We’ve put together a collection of flirting tips and ideas to help you play the game and bag your dream man.
62 - BGP Magazine www.biggirlsparadise.com
First things first... Flirting is a game and it consists of two players. Flirting with someone who clearly isn’t interested or wanders off mid sentence is starting a game that you will most likely lose. You should be able to tell within the first few minutes whether or not your target is a worthy opponent, and always remember, if he isn’t interested then he isn’t worthy of your worries! Guys are simple; they want you to want their attention. This is probably the most important and effective rule of flirting 101 - make him think that he is doing the work. He wants to impress you, and feel even manlier than he already does. Men enjoy the chase, the intellectual foreplay that will have him hanging from your every word. You just need to find the balance of playing hard to get, so he doesn’t lose interest, but not too hard that he feels like he’s not got a chance. If you don’t know him very well, be subtle. Make him aware that you’re interested, keep eye contact with him going, a study has shown it takes roughly thirteen glances before the average guy will come over! A casual glance will keep him interested, obviously staring at him non-stop will probably creep him out, and you’ll probably have to watch as he runs out the club. Keep your body language open, make him think
he can come over and talk to you, but don’t make it too sexy, this could put him off! So you’ve mastered the eye contact and body language, he’s walking over to you, what do you do next? The chase is still on, you may now be face to face, but it’s only just beginning! You could come up with a cheesey chat up line, but why risk ruining all your hard work? Wait for him to introduce himself, you don’t want to seem to eager, and who knows, he might just be coming up to the bar to get a drink… cringe! So he introduces himself and smiles at you, and then offers to buy you a drink. Now at this point you know you’ve got his attention, you’ve just got to get his number and then you’re sorted! Talk to him naturally, don’t over think what you’re about to say, this will cause an awkward silence, and make him feel you’re nervous, which isn’t very sexy at all. Being
mysterious is sexy and will keep him interested. Keep your body language relaxed, and casual, don’t flirt overly with him, this might put him off, and he’ll think he’s already won you over. Make him work for your attention, but drop hints about going on a date or getting his phone number.
He wants to impress you and feel even manlier than he already does
You can easily spend lots of time chatting to him now you’ve got his full attention, but keep the chase going for a little while longer. Tell him you’re going to go back and talk to friends, or that you’re moving on to another club, he’ll either want to come with you, or he’ll ask for your number. You’ll leave him wanting to know more about you, and fingers crossed he’ll want to call you to arrange a date! Now you play the waiting game, chances are he’ll text you the next morning, don’t reply for a while though, keep him guessing!
So, what do the men of Big Girls Paradise have to say on the subject? We asked 3 regular customers what their ultimate turn
ons and turn offs are when it comes to flirting!
Mark Singh, 41, lives in Harrow and is a Financal Systems consultant. ULTIMATE TURN ONS:
“Someone who responds and enjoys the chase. First impressions count, someone who is well spoken, behaves ladylike and intelligent”
ULTIMATE TURN OFFS:
“My ultimate turn off would have to be a woman, who after a short meet, would basically offer sex. ”
Lance Budd, 27, lives in Essex and is a trained chef and is single.
Derrick Locker, 37, lives in London and is an events manager.
ULTIMATE TURN ONS:
ULTIMATE TURN ONS:
“My biggest turn on is the connection I have with the person I’m flirting with, it’s very exciting.”
ULTIMATE TURN OFFS:
“My biggest turn off is somebody who doesn’t keep themselves clean and presentable. I like girls who look after themselves.”
“I love the initial eye contact and a girl to smell nice. I really enjoy the chase but I also like a girl to be polite.”
ULTIMATE TURN OFFS:
“Anybody that is too dominant, abusive, intoxicated and overly forward. Very unattractive!”

Rainbow Bridge Equine Rescue is a small but loving charity based in Wilmington, East Sussex. The rescue saves horses and ponies from many different situations including equines that are unwanted, neglected, saved from slaughter, from markets and those that are suffering from illness. We also give help and guidance to owners in difficult situations. The Rescue rehabilitate and rehome as many equines as possible. Unfortunately, however, some are beyond rehabilitation caused from previous situations they have been in, these animals stay at the rescue for life. The rescue manages to do an amazing amount of work, with staff working around their full time jobs to ensure all of our animals are cared for and nurtured to the best of our ability. This year, we are planning to expand our rescue centre, with lots of events to raise vital funds and promoting awareness, which in turn will hopefully help many more equines and gain a few more volunteers along the way! Some of our events include evenings out in Sussex, including a summer barn dance! We also plan on attending events at Hickstead throughout the year. We recently joined Recycle for Charity who donate money to the rescue for recycled ink cartridges, and have been selling donated items on eBay. Our newest fundraiser is Rainbow Lotto, buy a ticket (ÂŁ2) each month or a years subscription and at the end of each month the winning ticket wins ÂŁ100! If you would like to attend any of our events or would like to help or donate to the charity in any way, please contact us for further information. The Evil Dead (18)
Director: Fede Alvarez StarRing: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas ORIGINALLY RELEASED: 1981 DVD RELEASE: 12th August 2013 With the recent trend of Hollywood remakes, it would be forgiven to be unimpressed about a remake of the original 1981 Evil Dead, hailed as one of the best b-movies of all time, and still gaining a massive cult following. It’s over the top use of gore and terrifying sounds effects make for a creepy watch, even 32 years on, and its low budget effects have become part of it’s charm. The story is based around a group of friends that take a trip to a cabin in the middle of the woods. They unfortunately come across a book, where they summon a demon that possess them all in turn, causing them to have to kill each other in pretty horrific ways, including the hard to forget scene of Bruce Campbell’s character famously dismembering his on set girlfriend, Linda, with a chainsaw. Lovely. The 2013 reboot film won’t be remembered in the way the original has been, but is a very well produced horror film, in a time filled with paranormal horror films offering cheap scares and not much else. A big positive note for fans of the original will be that it is not a carbon copy remake, the story has been remastered to suit a modern audience. There are a number of stomach turning scenes in the latest incarnation, most notably the scene where Mia ‘licks’ a knife, which will no doubt make you look away. Director Fede Alvarez decided early on that they would use old school techniques and no CGI, a nice nod to the original’s roots, and this makes the film more realistic to a certain extent. What it is missing is the comedic value that the original held; I feel it takes itself a little

Thoughts: This is an article based on remakes. A lof of you are probably thinking ‘Oldboy? What on earth is Oldboy? I haven’t heard of that!’ and that isn’t surprising.
You see, Oldboy is a Korean film directed by a well respected Korean director called Chanwook Park, who recently directed his first English speaking film ‘Stoker’. Oldboy was also only made in 2003, so the film will be celebrating it’s 10th birthday this year! This is a fairly controversial remake, as many of the fans of the original film consider it a masterpiece and would pay good money for Hollywood to leave it alone. The film contains heavily disturbing scenes, which may be a bit too much for unsuspecting viewers to take in, but ultimately Oldboy is a revenge story that is deep, dark and full of moments that will make your jaw drop. Whether or not Spike Lee will keep the charm and intensity that makes the original so brilliant is yet to be decided, but either way it will definitely be one of the most interesting and anticipated films of the year. What to expect: Because of the devotation of the fans toward the original, Spike Lee will simply have to go far beyond and above any cinematic experience he has provided us with so far to make this movie a success. Expect outstanding performances, a storyline that will blow your socks off and hopefully, a few scenes that will be like nothing you have ever seen before and won’t want to see again!

LAMB AND MINT SLIDERS WITH MINTED SOUR CREAM Ingredients (makes 6 burgers) • 326g Diced Lamb • 1 Lamb stock cube • 1 White onion • 1 Tsp Salt and Pepper • 3 Tbs Mint Jelly For the minted soured cream: • 100ml Soured Cream • 3 Ttsp Fresh Mint Sauce • Salt and pepper to taste Method 1. Using a food processor, blitz all the burget ingredients in until fully combined. The mixture should be sticky. 2. Take the mixture and divide into 6-8 burger patties. If possible at this point, you want to leave those burgers for half an hour in the fridge to firm up. 3. Using a hot frying pan with some olive oil, fry each burger for about 8 minutes, flipping regularly. They should release a sort of caramelising liquid. That stuff tastes good, baste them as much as possible. 4. Mix the cream with the mint sauce. And there you go. Serve on a platter with some rolls and salad and let people help themselves! This recipe is perfect for a sharing lunch and would also be fantastic on a barbecue!
