Summer Sun Your suncream is only as good as your application, it’s time to swat up on your SPF’s and the do’s and don’ts this summer!

I

f deciding what to wear this summer wasn’t hard enough we all face another dilemma with what suncream to use. Suncream does works as soon as it’s applied, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply it before you get into the sun. Re-apply at least every 2 hours, and more if you are in and out of water or doing exercise. Sunburn increases you risk of skin cancer. Sunburn doesn’t just happen on holiday you may even get sunburnt when it’s cloudy, your skin can be

6 - www.bgpmagazine.co.uk

exposed to large amounts of UV without even noticing! Spend time in the shade when the sun is strongest. In the UK, this is between 11am and 3pm from March to October. Take extra care with children their skin is super sensitive! If sunscreen is applied too thinly, the amount of protection it gives is reduced. Most of us probably use nowhere near enough suncream than what is advised. Every application should be equal to a shot glass (we all

know how much that is!) this should cover your entire body and face. If you go swimming or plan on being in the water apply waterproof suncream every 40minutes for overall protection. The SPF in make-up doesn’t always work so don’t rely to heavily on it offering complete safety from the sun, make up can easily rub off leaving skin without any vital protection.

TOP TIP

Choosing a lip balm with SPF will keep your lips hydrated and refreshed!

o dern day Dubai is completely different to its humble origins during the 1960’s & 1970’s. You may be surprised to know that this sophisticated, bustling metropolis, was once a very small fishing village surrounded by desert. Yet some 50 years on it is now home to the world’s first 7 star hotel and a playground to the rich and famous. Sometimes called the Las Vegas of the middle-east, Dubai is a spectacular city of glitz and glamour catering for all ages and tastes. One of two of the best things to do in the city of Dubai is eat, the other is shop. This remarkable city is home to numerous celebrity chefs and has several Michelin star restaurants. Celebrity chefs include Gary Rhodes to Gordon Ramsey, each with their own footing in the culinary activity of this booming economy. Rich in Arabic culture, but with a fusion of international influences, Dubai really can offer you a global dining experience, of an extremely high standard, for a price of course. Dubai also has a number of cheaper places to eat in the city and the Al Dhiyafah Road is the showcase for this with its vast aray of quality restaurants with remarkable feats of architecture. This area like an artery, feeds the city’s huge working class from all over the world, who‘s backs are used to build this modern day el Dorado. These restaurants do not sell alcohol as they are outside of the confines of a hotel, and being a Muslim country this is prohibited, but you can eat very well, generally for less than £25 for two people. There are also a selection of fine food restaurants as wide as the nationalities that live in the city – which is vast. If you are a smoker or enjoy the traditional Shisha experience then you will find a Shisha lounge pretty much everywhere. As a non smoker my only disappointment is that they don’t seem to serve non tobacco Shisha, as the smell of the gorgeous fruit flavours is very alluring, but if you care about you lung health it’s best avoided! If you love shopping, there is no better

location in the world than Dubai. A great flight stop over destination when en route to more far flung places. Dubai quite literally, is a consumer’s paradise. Everything is tax free, which is appealing and they have sales during their shopping festival in January and February, which has become world famous and is probably the best time to go to pick up some bargains. The city has over 50 malls and each is as spectacular as the next. The most notable shopping centres or malls are the Deira centre with over 340 shops and 6,000 parking spaces. It is situated close to the old city and has everything the designer savvy shopper could want. One of the most spectacular malls to visit is the IBN Battuta Mall. This is the world largest themed mall and is situated on Sheikh Zayed Road. The mall has 275 shops and is divided into six separate themes with areas luxuriously decorated to look like Indian, China, Persia, Andalusia, Egypt and Tunisian areas of the globe. The Mall of Emirates & Dubai Mall are both very accessible and also worth visiting. Souqs may not be as glitzy as the wonderful shopping centres but are a great place for revelling in the exotic Arabic experience and for putting your bartering skills to the test. They are also a great place for colourful entertainment and a bargain. Madinat Jumeirah is a must visit for souks, leisurely dining and the famous Pacha nightclub. Within the souks you can choose from a variety that sell anything from gold and silver jewellery, traditional Arabic clothing, to spices and the gorgeous Oud perfume , which is a personal favourite of mine and becoming more and more popular for both women and men. International Village is a great place to meet some local camels, try different street foods and again enjoy the challenge of haggling for the best prices at any of its numerous stalls. In order to continue the theme of extravagance which defines Dubai. I would urge you to visit the Burq al Arab, the hotel which dominates the city’s skyline. A 7 star resort housing the world’s tallest hotel. The only way to get inside however is to book a room, which will definitely blow the budget! Alternatively you can book dinner in one of the many restaurants, including a favourite which allows you to view sea life literally under the sea. A dinner for two could set you back around £200 however, so again probably a special occasion treat. Visiting is well worth it to see the extensive gold leaf and sheer garishness and over the top decor of the hotel, extravagance at its most opulent! Dubai Marina with its array of amazing super yachts and restaurants is a very nice way to spend a relaxing evening. The Beach at Jumeirah is full of evening entertainment options also. Another must do, is a visit to the musical fountains at the foot

of the architecturally spectacular Burj Khalifa. This can be done while enjoying a cocktail or a coffee at one of the many bars and restaurants in close proximity. One of the hardest things to escape in Dubai is the sheer wealth and showiness of the city, that and the lack of greenery. However many of the top hotels have created convincing tropical garden paradises which have their own beauty. So if a dose of reality is what you seek you can always take a trip to the old city. The Bastakia Quarter still shows the remnants of the old Dubai and should be visited if for anything a sense of perspective. The area is a maze of streets with numerous galleries, souqs and cafes. While visiting this district do take the opportunity to visit the Dubai Museum, which is in the area, and have a bite to eat at some of the local traditional restaurants, this will certainly give you a very different feel to Dubai. Undoubtedly the United Arab Emirates is in possession of one of the fastest growing construction industries and transport systems in the world and with companies like Etihad airways and Emirates Airlines you can fly to Dubai with relative ease, and from around £350 in economy, which has to be said is a very high standard , especially if you book extra legroom. Etihad airline is always open to new and interesting ideas and have recently been working on a new super-fast car-train to transport people at 150mph+ Despite being an Islamic country Dubai is generally very liberal and for the most part you can wear anything you like. Obviously if visiting a mosque it is required and rightfully respectful for females to dress modestly and cover their heads with a scarf. As a regular traveller who loves warmth, and sunny climates but does not like extreme heat,I would suggest avoiding Dubai in the months of June, July & August as temperatures at that time of the year can sore to over 50C. I would recommend visiting in March/April/May or October/November for a suntan, warm evenings, but without the ridiculously high temperatures. Clothing wise, ladies, bring along your favourite floaty dresses as you will surely want to stay cool and comfortable during your trip if going out during the day sightseeing otherwise bikinis, with sarongs or kaftans are perfect for the pool or beach. Designer labels and luxury brands are very evident in Dubai and there are some great collections available from the many classy stores from big known brands and also local designers, ranging from casual outfit fashions for women to stunning, exclusive evening wear and much more. I always think it’s fun to become a part of a country’s local customs and adopt them to the fullest. Learning a few basic words in Arabic always goes down well with the locals, although everyone in the service industries seem to speak fairly good English. Women visiting Dubai always have fun enjoying the local Arabic dresses, be it traditional abayas or long, colourful, jewel encrusted gowns and head scarves. The Palm in Dubai is home to many beautiful hotels with

www.bgpmagazine.co.uk - 27

private beaches, including the famous Atlantis and definitely worth a visit. Another weekly tradition not to miss is Friday Brunch at any of the big hotels. A great time to meet up with friends or spend time with family over a long, leisurely, extensive buffet designed to make the mouth water. You can then relax listening to a resident DJ at one of their pools or private beaches which is often included in the price of the brunch. There are a very wide selection of activities available at most resorts including water sports, boat hire and in some places horse riding. A mention and a big thank you is needed to the wonderful Al Jiyad Stables, Al Qudra road, 1km before Bab Al Shams Desert Resort and Spa www.aljiyad.com for welcoming us to their stables and allowing us to do one of our photo shoots there. We were kindly introduced to some of their beautiful horses and the ever quirky camels and I even tried some camel’s milk! Founded in 1989 by Mr Ali Al Marzooqi, the stables are a family owned and run business working together to achieve the best in equine management and training for both horses and riders in the endurance discipline. In 2003 the riding school was opened with the help and support of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum. Located in the heart of Sieh Al-Salem nature reserve, the presence of Gazelles, desert foxes and Oryx’s is common during a ride. Al Jiyad stables also offer desert hacks on camel back, for the perfect Arabian Desert experience. I highly recommend this stables. In a nutshell, Dubai has something for everyone but I would not say it is a ‘ budget’ location. It’s exotic and diverse, with fabulous architecture and very high standards of service. However it is very man made due to its history and creation and if you like green open spaces, lakes, valleys and mountains it may not be for you. Personally I think it’s a great place to try for 5 days or so on your way to or from somewhere else or for a winter get away to escape the British weather and perfect for the shopaholic! I LOVE DUBAI FOR MANY REASONS... The culture, the atmosphere and the people. With the locals being very welcoming and very proud of their city it makes it hard not to love this jewel of Arabia, it is a highly developed city with architecture that is truly amazing, this has been designed to attract many walks of life. Dubai can be done on a budget, but if you are really lucky to experience the true opulence of the amazing hotels and lifestyle you can feel like a true Arabian princess. There are many things I enjoy doing like the Wild Wadi and Atlantis Aqua venture water parks are amongst the best water parks in the world, and truly the most advanced. I mean

36 - www.bgpmagazine.co.uk

who hears of a waterslide that actually pushes you up the slide that is truly a fun experience, however full swimming costume advised as those water jets can rip your bathers off in one blast! Then there is the amazing shopping Mall of Emirates complete with snow ski park and the Dubai Mall complete with many activities including an aquarium and the amazing dancing fountains, I love taking a trip to old Dubai where it all started with myriads of colours spices, gold, beautiful traditional kaftans and the amazingly intoxicating scent of Oud down the old cobbled laneways it really takes you back in time. If you’re really daring you can

take a 4wd desert bashing tour, not for the light hearted, but it will get your adrenaline pumping sliding sideways in a land cruiser down the side of what feels like a five story building and then bouncing over the top of the dune to see a heard of camels running to move out of the way. I love to take a ride on a camel pronounced “jamel in Arabic, imagine having a traditional BBQ in the middle of a desert complete with belly dancers and the fruity smell of traditional shisha smoking, this truly is one of the best Emirati traditions, this wondrous city has captured my heart and attention for many years, and I cannot wait to return to this city full of eastern promise.

At BGP we love nothing more than a good book! Letting ourselves get so into a book that we don’t want to put it down is such a great feeling! Reading allows us to travel to places we have never been to and opens our eyes to an imaginary world, even if we are picturing Christian Grey! To read that happily ever after, or go on a journey we may never take in real life. To become characters with magical powers, to fly, converse with talking animals, find gold, and live in different

countries or universes. It transports us away from the contemporary, and into the imagination. You can learn things in fiction as easily as you can learn things from school books and non-fiction literature. Authors do lots of research to make their worlds accurate and interesting. You’re also being guided through your dream by the author and the story they’ve written. Unlike a daydream, everything that happens in a story is not up to you. So really it’s the best of both worlds: it has the anything is possible aspect of dreaming and imagining, coupled with the unpredicabilty of things that you never saw coming, sort of like real life! Here are our top picks to get you swept of your feet!

INTRODUCING KATHERINE HENRY

MS BRITISH BEAUTY CURVE 2016 92 - www.bgpmagazine.co.uk

“ YOUR WORTH IS NOT DEFINED BY SOMEONE ELSE’S PERCEPTION OF YOU ” So let’s get this straight; you are a Beauty Queen, a Blogger, a Plus Size Model, a Fitness Instructor, a Mother with a full time day job? How do you find the time to do all of that? Yes that’s correct, I like to keep myself busy. I get antsy when I’m not doing something, so I have my fingers in a lot of different pies. Don’t get me wrong trying to juggle it all can be terrifying at times but I am deeply passionate about each of these things. When I love something I put my heart and soul into it and I’m loving my life right now. I’ve always said that whilst I enjoy what I’m doing I will continue doing it all, the minute something becomes a chore, I will stop. Out of all the areas is there one that you love the most?

You’ve had quite a year since being crowned Ms British Beauty Curve 2015/16, what have you been up to? Yes it has been a whirlwind. I’ve been given some fantastic opportunities in the last 11 months. I made it my mission to promote plus size pageantry to the fullest. I have spent a great deal of time reaching out to women who have never tried anything like this before and trying to boost their confidence. I’ve been known to stop random strangers on the street just to tell them that they are beautiful. Some of these women I have pointed in the direction of pageants, some modelling opportunities, some towards blogging. Whatever their passions are I will try and help them achieve their own dreams.

Being a Mother. No question, my daughter is 15 years old and she is my world. For so many years I battled with low self esteem and zero confidence, I started to see my negativity and lack of self worth rub off on her. So I changed, I started to make positive changes in my life in attempt to prove to her that your worth is not defined by someone else’s perception of you. I wanted to show her that you should follow your dreams and you can be whatever you want to be if you work hard for it. She’s a fantastic young woman and she makes me very proud. Fashion blogging has given you a platform to reach out to brands and grow your audience; do you think that’s the way forward? Blogging is all about networking and has helped me to get more exposure. Blogging isn’t easy though, sometimes one blog post can take hours and that’s after you’ve spent time taking the photos. You have to be consistent and your content has to be interesting and relevant. The media’s perception of how a body should be has made it very hard for people to relate to models. They choose not to show

www.bgpmagazine.co.uk - 93

can be fit at any size and I am definitely the healthiest I have ever been since doing BH classes. My focus is on increasing my fitness rather than being concerned in losing weight. Besides Louise Fitness/BH Dance isn’t your average fitness class, it’s a unique blend of dance moves, toning and cardio exercise. It’s quite a fun way to exercise in a “no pressure” environment, which actually feels more like a night out dancing then an exercise class. We have all different types of people doing our classes, men and women, different ages and sizes and we encourage people to take things at their own pace. I wish there wasn’t such a stigma around being plus size and being healthy. Why do you think being a plus size model is so important in today’s society?

true representations of how every body is unique. Many people see an item of clothing on a model who is smaller and they cannot visualise how it will look on their own bodies. Blogging allows you to see the clothes on different shapes and sizes making it more relatable to the everyday person. Blogging allows you to see the clothes on different shapes and sizes making it more relatable to the everyday person. What have been some of your highlights this past year? Other than being crowned Ms British Beauty Curve, I would say being nominated for Best New Blog at last year’s British Plus Size Awards, doing a social media takeover for Simply Be for London Fashion Week, modelling with Scarlett & Jo, modelling swimwear and lingerie for Panache at Curvy Convention, modelling for Simply Be at Style XL and modelling for Lisa Riley’s Just Be You range at The Curve Fashion Festival. You’re not a typical fitness instructor, have you faced any adversity for being plus size? Other than the odd disbelieving look when I tell people that I am one, no I haven’t. Perhaps to look at me you wouldn’t think I exercise as much as I do but you cannot judge someone’s health or level of fitness just by looking at them. I believe that you

There simply isn’t enough diversity in the media. Society telling people to look a certain way isn’t helping people explore their individuality. I’d like to see more representations of all types of bodies in today’s media. Incorporating plus size models is a positive step in the right direction towards diversity, but there are still not enough of the under-represented areas; like models of different ethnicities, models of all abilities, petite models, alternative models

and fuller figured models. I am part of a group of models of different shapes, sizes and ethnicities called The Rubenesque Effect. We formed to try and help change the media’s perception of how a model should look. What do you consider to be most fulfilling aspect of what you do? Helping to instil confidence in people. I was very fortunate to be able to speak at Sisi Events Motivation and Confidence Building seminar recently and as I am an Ambassador for Ms Curvaceous UK, I often help mentor the contestants and share my story at the auditions. Even being a Curvy Kitten at Big Girls Paradise plus size club nights helps do this too. I like bringing people together, as a Curvy Kitten I like to get people dancing and make people feel welcome. I’m all about spreading love. Seeing other people grow and fulfil their own dreams is something that is very important to me, it really makes me feel proud to see them evolve. I think supporting other people in their endeavours is very important, there are too many people competing against each other in this world, I want everyone to succeed and if I can help in any way I can, I do.

Em’s Summer Essentials Hey Everyone! Welcome to my new column, every issue I’m going to be showing you my ‘essentials’ for the upcoming months. This issue we’re focusing on SUMMER (if it ever arrives in the UK) and what I’ve been loving fashion wise, along with some of my beauty essentials.

BOMBER LOVE Bombers have been HUGE the first half of this year and I’m sure they will continue to dominate the stores for a good while yet. New Look Curves have some really lovely ones and ASOS Curve do a great selection of plain and cute embroided styles PRETTY PASTELS We all love a bit of pastel in the summer. I recently picked up this Pink Pastel Quilted Bag from Yours Clothing which I have to say is a really good dupe for the YSL

classic envelope bag and a fraction of the price. I think I got a bargain!

BARDOT BABY Bardot tops are a huge hit this year (yay no more tan lines from vest tops) Some of my favourites for the season are from Evans and River Island Plus BEACH BODY READY Who’s beach Body ready? Answer.... Everyone! If you have a body then you are Beach Body Ready. There are some really super cute swimsuits out there at the moment, my favourites have to be this green check one from Simply Be and this amazing AlohaSeafoam Tankini from Curvy Kate. PICNIC ACCESSORIES When I think of summer I always think of Beach Walks and Picnics and

what better way than to accessorise accordingly. I love wicker beach bags, they’re stylish, roomy and they double up as picnic baskets. My favourite one at the moment is this vibrant tassel one from Very.

SUMMER SKIN Summer is not a time for heavy foundation, you want to be able to let your skin to breath and in the warmer months I really recommend a good BB Cream, with SPF it even’s out your skin tone and also gives you the added protection from the sun.

Rimmel 9 in 1 BB Cream for me is a must.. Fancy a golden glow there are so many self tans around but my favourite has to be Cocoa Brown, esp the 1 hour mousse!

LIP SERVICE I love a bright lippie and in the summer I always reach for pretty pinks and corals. Lately I have been loving the Revlon Balm Stains. The balm consistency really helps nourish my lips and the pigment in these lasts all day. FEET TREATS Your feet have been

locked away in boots and shoes for so long, it’s now time to embrace the flip flops and take care of those tootsies.I really love the Soap & Glory Heel Genius, I leave it on overnight with socks once a week to try and bring the moisture back into my poor dry cracked feet.

NICE NAILS Time to show off those summer nails, my favourite nail varnish collection at the moment is the Barry M Coconut Infusion Range they have some really pretty summer shades and the shine on them is amazing

Have a great summer everyone... remember Another feet treat I have to stay safe in the sun just discovered is this The and also eat lots of Mr Body Shop peppermint Whippy’s foot spray, perfect to See you next time cool your swollen feet down after a hot day.

Love Em xxx

I am enjoying a beautiful life filled with imagery, colours, textures and the best ofall BIRDS! for the Fly Girl Collection. It is my life’s goal to collect beautiful things from all over the world and use them to create my expression of love to the world: Enjeanious Jewels. This year BGP Magazine were lucky enough to attend the Curvy Convention 2016! The all-day plus size fashion event was brilliant to say the least! We especially loved the fashion and diversity on this year’s catwalk with a huge variety of different styles, there was something for everyone. Brands were arranged around the venue and had some amazing things to offer from bridal gowns and prom dresses by Sydneys Closet and Callista, fabulous t-shirts by Nicky Rockets, gorgeous lingerie by Nine X lingerie and Fate Luxury, there were also pop up beauty treatments like Jamberry nails! The catwalk for us was the highlight of the day! Seeing such beautiful women embracing their curves summed up everything that we stand for at BGP Magazine! You can see more of the models photographs in full by visiting www.curvyconvention.co.uk - Look out for details of next year’s event.
