Bishamber Das A catch up with our beautiful cover girl Bishamber Das

What have you been up to since you last modelled for BGP Magazine? Life’s been a blessing since my last shoot with BGP Magazine – from a shy girl to now being recognised as an international plus size model makes me very proud. Personally I have never seen myself as a model, I see myself as a woman on a mission targeting all those countries and cultures that see plus size women in a negative light. I have been given the opportunity to work on many projects around the world where I have been able to show a plus size woman with the same respect and dignity she deserves. We see you are travelling a lot is this due to your modelling? I love that so many women around the world can relate to my looks, that could be from the Far East, Middle East or the West! My projects take me all over the world, where I get the
opportunity to do meet and greets. It’s amazing to see the love your supporters give you. I truly believe there’s beauty in our differences and I am working hard in showing that. We see you are the face of a certain plus size brand, is this just in Dubai or worldwide? I am very proud that I have been given the opportunity to represent them across all of the middle east. I am in Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. It’s an amazing feeling! I have featured numerous times on the website and few pop ups in UK stores too. Do you still manage to fit in your normal work or are you a full time model now? My life is crazy!! I still work as a magistrate and a child protection social care worker! People ask me how I find the time to do everything I do, for me it’s simple – you make time
www.bgpmagazine.co.uk
for everything you love. My passion drives me regardless of what field that may be in. Your mum must be incredibly proud of you for doing so much for women in the south Asian community. If today I stand in front of the world as a strong woman it’s all down to her sacrifice and commitment. My mum’s always taught me to be a strong woman and truly stand by what I believe in. I knew this journey would never be easy, I am the first woman in Britain from a south Asian background to challenge this perception openly. India has the 2nd biggest population around the world and I am the first woman to bring this concept to northern India and beyond. I will carry on working hard to show that plus size women are also capable of doing things mainstream models do. We love following your career what is next for Bishamber? I have never considered myself as just a model as I truly believe I have so much more to offer. I am very passionate about fashion and this has led me to explore my side in fashion designing. I am currently working on my own designer clothes line.
“I will carry on working hard to show that plus size women are also capable of doing things mainstream models do”
Tell us about your TV career I had never imaged that I would see myself on TV in any form, all that has come my way so far has truly been a blessing. This year will be bigger and better, I am traveling to India in the coming days where I will be doing a meet and greet with all my supporters and working alongside extremely talented singers in their music videos that will be featured in India and all around the world. You are doing the Curvy Convention this year, do you prefer photographic or catwalk modelling?
I enjoy doing both, every experience teaches me more and more about the art of modelling. Every time I set foot on stage or on set I allow myself to feel vulnerable which only helps me to learn and become better at what I love doing. You are our cover girl for this issue how does this make you feel? It’s a great feeling, to me its proof that my hard work is recognised and appreciated by many. I am proof to those who love me that you can achieve anything you set your heart too, and a reminder to those who can’t bare me that there’s still so much more they’re going to see.

BGP FASHION
SURVIVING THE FESTIVAL SEASON EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW UNDER ONE TENT
NEW LOOK £12.99
create your individual look. If you opt for skirts and you have larger thighs, investing in some anti friction gel/cream or some short style undies can be a godsend. The Big Bloomers Company, available in sizes 12-40, offer some great styles of underwear! Footwear is another important element - those of us with larger calves may find it more difficult to get wellies that are suitable.
JOE BROWNS £45
F
estival fashion is a big part of the festival season, and many plus size retailers provide us with some lovely options. My favourite brand is Joe Browns, available at Simply Be, but there are many other retailers such as ASOS and Boohoo that have some great options too. Ebay also has some great bargains! Go with your own style, and accessorise with hats and sunglasses to
RIVER ISLAND £12
Written by Michelle Carter
Go with your own style Many Plus Size retailers now stock wellies in wider leg sizes to suit all looks. Some brands are Jileon, JJ Footwear and Evans. Don’t forget there are other options, my favourite is my Dr. Martens as they offer great grip, and they are lace up so there is no struggling with getting in or out of them.
16
www.bgpmagazine.co.uk
TOP TIP Get socks to that are longer than your boots, or they can rub on your calves making very sore blisters
P
acking can be a bit of fine art when going to a festival. Plan your clothes in ‘outfits’ and plan wisely, layers are best for all weathers, keep it to a minimum…why? You will most probably (unless you go VIP) have a long walk from the car to the camping area the last thing you want is struggle to carry your stuff. Pack a sensible size day bag too with enough room for your money, phone, loo roll, sunnies, suncream, waterproofs and bottle of water. Don’t take your stuff in a suitcase – grab a backpack, easier to carry, suitcase wheels and grass and mud do not mix well!! When you go to a festival there are certain bits of kit that will make things easier, more comfortable and overall give you a more enjoyable experience.
Some festivals have either a festitaxi or porter system (pre-book), where you can catch a ride in a buggy or at least your luggage can, again either saving you the walk or making it a much lighter one (not available at all festivals).
USEFUL FESTIVAL TIPS SAVE SOME WARM trousers If you drive, leave a spare pair of jeans and socks in the car, so when you leave after four days of torrential downpour, you’ll be warm and snug. KEEP A LAYER OF CLOTHING IN RESERVE No matter how cold you are, there’s always potential for it to get colder.
TOP TIP Take wet wipes as you will never need them more than you do at a festival - they will become your best friend!
Ladies! Don't wear a onesie! You may have to unbutton it in a portable toilet cubicle in the dark, and nobody wants that.
Most importantly, look after each other and have fun!
S
M
ost festivals have a boutique area, this is available at a small extra cost (approx. £10-£50) and allows you access to posh loos, and showers, many also include hair straighteners and vanity stations for you to get your festival chic on – also great if you cannot face no showers for 3 or 4 days
eating is limited at a festival, so the best idea to take your own with you, lightweight fishing / camping chairs are a great idea if you are not happy with spending the day sitting on the floor or standing up. Most outdoor shops will stock these, and I find ones with the cross over bars tend to be a bit sturdier like this one from Tesco. There is a great company called Tangerine Fields (www.tangerinefields.co.uk) who I have used on many occasions. They provide pre-erected tents, with options for blow up beds, festival kits and some other options dependent on the festival. This is a great idea for those who don’t want to lug their camping gear from their cars and don’t want to mess about putting up and taking down a tent just Rock up and Rock on!
INVEST IN A SOLAR POWERED CHARGER They’re cheap now and will keep your phone going all weekend. Saves you losing half a day queuing at a charging tent. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen This tip may seem like the most obvious, but it’s also the most important. A really bad sunburn from your first day at the festival, could ruin the rest of your time. Carry a torch There is nothing worse than trying to use a dirty portaloo in the dark, or suddenly finding yourself unable to distinguish your tent from hundreds of others in the dark. It might seem like useless over-preparation, but having a flashlight with you at all times to help navigate unfamiliar grounds after dark will come in handy.
The last tip is just to enjoy yourself!

HAYLEY STEWART Curves & Curls WINNER - Best New Blog 2015 British Plus Size Awards “
I wanted to be a more active part of this community and help other women feel good about their bodies
”
20
How did you first get into blogging? I had been reading style blogs for some time, I loved the body positivity of plus size bloggers. I started sharing more and more body positive pictures and posts, until I realised that wasn’t enough. I wanted to be a more active part of this community, and help other women feel good about their bodies so I started blogging. Can you tell us some of your strengths that have helped you with your blogging? I’ve always loved to write, it’s a creative outlet for me. In my day job I work in Communications so a lot of the social media stuff I kinda knew how to do already. I love fashion and shoppingit really helps! How would you describe your style of writing/blogging? I’m quite informal - I tend to write the way I would talk. I talk about the clothes, the fit, pattern and fabric. I also talk www.bgpmagazine.co.uk
about how the clothes make me feel and when and where I might wear them. I try to inject a bit of humour - what’s life without laughs? Have you had any negative moments, and if so, what did you learn from that? I posted a picture of myself in a bikini in the summer, under the hashtag fatkini, some trolls popped their heads up and said nasty things but for every mean comment there were 20 positive ones. I guess I learned that “haters gonna hate” but that the supportive community you build around you, and choose to mix with, are so much stronger than that and that makes the silly haters a l0t easier to deal with. Tell us about your proudest achievement? Blogging wise, it has to be winning Best New Blogger at last year’s British Plus Size Awards. I was up against some incredible bloggers and I was really suprised and honoured
“
The most incredible thing is when someone tells me that my blog has helped them
”
to win. I was probably so thrilled just because it shows people value what I am writing and that’s an incredible boost. Who has impacted you most in blogging and how? The first plus size blog I ever read was Frocks and Frou Frou. I love Lilli’s style and how she writes. Caroline from CurvyWordy writes incredibly detailed posts about fit, I try to incorporate that into my posts because it is so helpful. Georgina from She Might Be Loved has incredible technical knowledge aznd has taught me so much. George from Fuller Figure Fuller Bust is a total style guru. I love her look! What do you do in your spare time? I love live music and I’m more of a pub girl than a club girl. I love to read so my kindle goes everywhere with me. My type of marathons are Netflix ones. I also love to eat out - trying new restaurants is a must! Where would you like to be with your blog five years from now? I’d like to still be loving blogging, still writing because I enjoy it and I’d miss not doing it. Aspirations wise - I’d love to have worked with a brand on creating a dress, or a collection. To have developed something of my own. That would be my dream! What has been the most challenging moment in your blogging journey to date? It’s going to sound silly - but winter! I like to take my pictures outside in natural light, I am reliant on my friends and family taking them. It gets really hard in winter because there’s
so much less light. Do you have any favourite plus size brands? We’re getting more and more choice. Simply Be and Evans have really upped their game, producing some wonderful pieces. I love Studio 8 London, their stuff is gorgeously high end - beautifully cut, they have a timeless quality! I’m also a huge fan of Lady Voluptuous, a collaboration between Lady V London and George from Fuller Figure Fuller Bust. They make beautiful, vintage style dresses which I adore! Have you met anyone interesting/famous on your blogging journey?
www.bgpmagazine.co.uk
I got to hangout with Beth Ditto when she was in London for the launch of her new collection earlier this year, she’s a total babe! What is the biggest difference in your life post-blogging? My blog is now the thing in my life I’m most proud of. It’s something that’s completely my own. I have met so many incredible people and I’ve made some wonderful new friends. The most incredible thing is when someone tells me that my blog has helped them. I feel myself growing in confidence because of the amazing blogs I read. I am thrilled to think I might get to do that for others.

awn Gracie is a Sussex based business woman and entertainer with a wealth of experience, having spent twelve years developing her various stage personas, from rock to retro with a healthy dash of sauce. In 2011, after being awarded the prestigious title of Best Dressed at the infamous Goodwood Revival in Sussex, an invitation to ‘show off’ her outfit at a local nursing home gave her the encouragement to devise a retro repertoire and launch herself as the ‘all singing, all dancing’ Dawn’s Vintage Do. Having been obsessed with all things 50’s and 60’s for most of her life, and with friends and family frequently telling her that she had been born in the wrong era, this gave Dawn the perfect opportunity to work with a nostalgic musical genre and showcase her extensive, ever growing collection of vintage and cabaret style outfits. Dawn performs at weddings and private parties, hosts business functions and fashion shows and produces cabarets and burlesque shows with her expertise being people herding, defrosting an audience and skilfully
facilitating fun. As an innovative extension to her Dawn’s Vintage Do entertainment package, Dawn qualified as a Burlesque fitness instructor. Dawn’s Starlet Daze School of Burlesque runs bi-monthly showgirl workshops across Sussex, teaching women ultimate self confidence, embracing pin up power and bombshell beauty regardless of size, ability or age. Dawn said “The main aim of the workshops is to have an evening of feminine fun where you can light up the room with fire in your eyes and leave feeling like you’re walking on air with an added wiggle. There’s nothing more rewarding than being able to inspire women of all sizes and ages to embrace their curves and discover their inner diva!” Personal development is the foundation of all Dawn’s teachings in her Burlesque school. ‘’It’s not about what skills you have or how well you do them, it’s all in the delivery and
“There’s nothing more rewarding than being able to inspire women of all sizes and ages” self belief.’’ Dawn fully understands the complexities of the ‘dormant’ stage of life some women can find themselves in, either as a result of bringing up children, weight gain/loss, career distractions or life in general. So working with women who want to explore their abilities, tap into hidden aspects of their personalities, and step out of their comfort zones, is exactly what her School of Burlesque is all about. It’s not just how it looks, but how a woman feels when she is doing it. Dawn was awarded ‘Business Personality of the Year 2013’ at the Observer & Gazette awards ceremony in 2013. She then went on to achieve ‘Highly Commended’ for the same award at the final Southern Business Awards; proving that it’s not all about feather boas and singing songs, it’s about being a business woman who makes a difference to those who choose to use her innovative services.

uncan was born an entertainer, starring in school productions and starting his professional career working at Haven holiday camp, where he was to meet his soon to be band mates Lee Ryan, Simon Webbe and Antony Costa. Then Blue, the pop group, was born in 2001 and the band immediately signed to Innocent Records. They exploded onto the scene and amassed huge commercial success, racking up forty Number One singles worldwide, three Number One UK albums and sales of over 13 million records. In 2005 the guys decided to take a break from the band to pursue other interests, and Duncan saw this as the perfect opportunity to broaden his experience within the entertainment industry. He starred as Billy Flynn in the hit musical Chicago, and became a familiar face on television, working as a presenter on Soapstar Superstar, Capital FM’s Party In The Park, City Hospital, T4, The Clothes Show and GMTV’s Entertainment Today. He also competed in ITV’s Dancing On Ice in 2007 where he became a finalist, and participated in the subsequent sellout tour in arenas across the UK. He then
“Duncan was born an entertainer”
made his television acting debut in Plus One for Channel 4, in which he played a tonguein-cheek characterization of his Blue persona, with the series being acclaimed by both critics and the public. Further TV appearances have included Grease: The School Musical for Sky 1, Eurovision: Your Country Needs You (as a Judge) for BBC1, Eight Out Of Ten Cats for Channel 4 and presenting The National Lottery for BBC1 many times.
In 2009 Duncan returned to theatre, appearing as Warner Huntington III in the West End production of Legally Blonde at the Savoy Theatre. He then presented the exciting new theme park game show Scream If You Know The Answer on Watch in 2010, which played a second series in 2011, before landing a spot on the judging panel on Channel 5’s new entertainment show Don’t Stop Believing, searching for the group that best
represented the spirit of the Glee phenomenon. 2011 saw the Blue boys come 11th representing the UK at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf with “I Can”. The band released their fourth studio album, Roulette, in 2013 with “Hurt Lovers” as the lead single, before they joined other groups on TV in The Big Reunion. Blue continue to thrive with a new album in 2015, and recently a new TV show on ITV2 – Blue Goes Mad In Ibiza, which followed the band as they launched their own bar. Duncan made his pantomime debut in 2014/15 playing the title role in Jack And The Beanstalk at the Birmingham Hippodrome for Qdos Productions. And is currently touring the UK as Tick (Mitzi) in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical.

Nothing says quick, easy and simple more than jacket potatoes. It’s up to you whether you stuff them, but we think the extra few steps make every mouthful even more tasty!
METHOD Preheat the oven to 200˚C Scrub potatoes & prick with fork INGREDIENTS Put potatoes in oven, bake for 4 large baking potatoes 1 – 1½ hours until potato is tender Heat oil in frying pan & add onion scrubbed On softening, add bacon & cook until bacon begins to crisp. One large onion finely Cut potatoes in half then carefully use a spoon to scoop out the chopped potato into a bowl, taking care not to break the skin. 8 rashers streaky bacon diced Add butter & mash the potato until there are no lumps 100g grated cheddar cheese Add 75g of the cheese, the bacon and the onion. Mix well Use a spoon to scoop the mixture back into the potato skins ½ tbsp rapeseed oil Top with grated cheese 30g butter Return to 180˚C oven on a tray. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Divide meringue mixture evenly between them and shape into circles about 20cm in diameter. Put both trays in oven and bake for 1 hour until meringues look slightly golden and fluffy in the middle.
For the pavlova 400g fresh strawberries and raspberries 200ml double cream 200ml fat-free natural yoghurt 2 tablespoons caster sugar 1 vanilla pod, seeds removed a few sprigs fresh mint leaves picked
Halve or quarter the large strawberries and leave the smaller ones whole. Mix them with the raspberries. Whip the cream with sugar until it forms soft peaks, then stir in yoghurt and fold in vanilla seeds.
Finish off a meal or compliment the afternoon with this gorgeous summer berry pavlova recipe
44
Spoon half the cream mixture on top of one of the meringue halves and smooth it out. Sprinkle half of your berries evenly around the cream mixture. Place the other meringue on top and press down gently to stick them together. Spread the remaining cream mixture over the top layer and sprinkle remaining berries on top. Scatter over a few small mint leaves and enjoy! www.bgpmagazine.co.uk

introducing @itsemchannel
My name is Emma Millard, I run the Blog and You Tube ‘Its Em Channel’
I’ve been blogging for 3 years and vlogging for around 2 years now, they have become the only hobbies that I have never given up on. Why? Because fashion and fun are my passions. I started my little blog one Christmas when my husband was working nights, I was at a loose end so I decided I wanted to create something just for me, my own little space of the internet to share my passion for everything - from beauty to make up, to crafts and fashion. It was only through blogging that I discovered the Plus Size Community and it completely opened my eyes. I fell in love with everything about it. I was submerged into a wonderful world of amazing, strong, beautiful women with drive, determination, and most importantly, style! As someone that has always followed and loved fashion, but always shyed away from wearing certain things, the community changed my perception of myself. I found I was trying more things, I was introducing more colours, prints and cuts into my wardrobe - it felt so liberating and still does to this day. My wardrobe would not be what it is today without blogging, I love how my style is forever changing and I think now it always will. I would say that YouTube is now my favourite social media outlet. I love the live interaction it gives me. I vlog with my husband, have ‘Tea With E’ where I grab a cuppa and talk about topics and enjoy making videos such as hauls, GRWM and lookbooks. I’ve reached over 5000 subscribers. It is going from strength to strength! You see the fun times I have with my husband and family but also the times where I have a little cry - people relate and that’s what makes it real. Through blogging and YouTube, I have made so many wonderful friends. I can’t imagine them not being part of my life now. My Husband Chris has supported me from day one. He never complains and is always there for me - I truly believe I wouldn’t be who I
The best hobby I didn’’t give up on am today without him. If someone said to me 3 years ago I would be taking part in brand campaigns, appearing on MTV in my bra, running a successful You Tube channel and modelling for BGP Magazine for the wonderful Sydneys Closet all because of my blog and You Tube Channel, I don’t think I would have believed them. Sometimes I have to pinch myself. I’m so happy I’ve never given up. Its the best hobby I’ve ever had and longmay it continue…

Durdle Door is a world famous geological wonder, with its massive rock arch, set right on the Jurassic Coast between Swanage and Weymouth, just along the coast path from Lulworth Cove, it is absolutely beautiful. Tourists flock from all over to see and take pictures of this beautiful landmark.
The town, originally a small port and fishing village, flourished in the Victorian era, when it first became a significant quarrying port and later a seaside resort for the rich of the day. Today the town remains a popular tourist resort, with thousands of visitors coming to the town during the peak summer season.
Located in the most vibrant and cosmopolitan town on the south coast, surrounded by some of the UK’s most beautiful beaches. Set in between the seven miles of smooth sand and crystal clear water, Bournemouth Pier offers a variety of attractions for the whole family
Sandbanks itself is a small peninsula, which contains some of the most expensive houses and land in the country. Sandbanks is becoming as famous for its well know residents and lavish lifestyles of some of its occupants as it is for its beach. During the summer, the beach is packed with people of all ages

Overlooking the entrance to Christchurch Harbour in Dorset, Mudeford is a sleepy fishing village with great charm and history. The town has a historic theatre and cinema. Cafes, gifts shops, inns and restaurants make this a pleasant place to visit or to live.
The Cove was formed by the combined forces of the sea and a river swollen by melting ice at the end of the last Ice Age.The river is now a small stream which flows down into the Cove by the Beach CafĂŠ. On stormy winter days, it is easy to see that this process continues and that, over time, the Cove will become bigger.
A few hundred years ago, Poole was one of the countries foremost Fishing ports with boats from the town voyaging all the way to the Grand Banks and Newfoundland for cod. As with any sea-port, piracy and smuggling were big business.
Hengistbury Head is a dramatic headland in Bournemouth situated to the south of Christchurch Harbour. It is an outstanding site for wildlife and archaeology and offers beautiful beaches and views across the New Forest, Isle of Wight and www.bgpmagazine.co.uk Purbecks

Citrus fruits are generally categorised into scents that have a ‘clean’ smell about them, so we think they are perfect for using as a cleaning product in your home. From lemons to limes, the bells of St Clement’s will be ringing when you’ve finished cleaning! To clean the surface of white marble or ivory (such as piano keys), rub with a half a lemon, or make a lemon juice and salt paste. Wipe with a clean, wet cloth. Rub kitchen and bathroom faucets with lemon peel. Wash and dry with a soft cloth to shine and remove spots. Fresh lemon juice in rinse water removes soap film from interiors of ovens and refrigerators. Create your own air freshener: Slice some lemons, cover with water, and let simmer in a pot for about an hour. (This will also clean your aluminum pots!)
To clean a cutting board, sprinkle with salt. Using a lemon half with the cut side down, scour the surface. Let it sit for 5 minutes, and then scrape the gray, dirty liquid into a small bowl using a bench scraper, and discard. Give the surface a final rinse with a clean wet sponge.
BGP Magazine’s TOP TIPS on cleaning your home ‘au naturale’ A paste of baking soda and water cleans ovens without the chemicals. Just make a paste on the bottom of the oven, leave for a few hours and wipe off for a shiny. Make your own scouring powder with 2 parts baking soda, 1 part salt, and 1 part borax. It will cut through even the toughest scum! Dump a cup of baking soda into the toilet and let it soak for at least an hour. Pour in a cup of white vinegar, leave for 5 mins and flush. Unless the toilet is really dirty, this will clean it without scrubbing! Sprinkle the bottom of your bin with baking soda and then sprinkle again after you put a new bag in to keep away any bad odours from the rubbish. To eliminate stale smells from food containers, rinse out with hot water and baking soda. If the smell persists, let the container soak overnight in the baking soda and water mixture.

To make Citrus Infused Vinegar, fill a jar with citrus peels and pour undiluted white vinegar over them. Leave for up to 2 weeks and strain out the vinegar to use as a natural cleaner. It works as a window cleaner (dilute with water), for mopping floors, or for disinfecting surfaces. To clean your dishwasher with ease, fill a dishwasher safe bowl or jar with 2 cups of vinegar and set on the top rack of the dishwasher. Run through on a hot cycle with no other dishes in the dishwasher to clean and remove the musty odour. To clean mini-blinds or venetians, just put on a white cotton glove and moisten the fingers in a solution made of equal parts white vinegar and hot tap water. Slide your fingers across both sides of each slat and prepare to be amazed. Use a container of clean water to periodically wash off the glove.
To clean shower, in a medium saucepan, simmer a quart of water with natural ingredients to freshen and clean the air. Just make sure not to let the water evaporate off. To restore your leather furniture to it’s former glory, mix equal parts white vinegar and boiled linseed oil in a recycled spray bottle, shake it up well, and spray it on. Spread it evenly over your furniture using a soft cloth, give it a couple of minutes to settle in, then rub it off with a clean cloth. For anything rusty, soak in full-strength white vinegar for several days. You can pour vinegar on rusted hinges and screws to loosen them up for removal. To keep flowers flesh, mix 2 tbsp vinegar and 2 tbsp sugar in the vase before adding the flowers. www.bgpmagazine.co.uk
Combinations are: 1 sliced lemon, 2 tablespoons rosemary A dash of vanilla 1 sliced orange 1 teaspoon cinnamon A dash of nutmeg and cloves (smells like pumpkin pie) 1 sliced lime 2 tablespoons thyme

LIVING WITH PCOS As a mum, balancing a job, family and social life can be hard. Heather tells BGP Magazine what it’s like to do balance her life overall whilst living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
E
verybody thinks that your body is normal and I suppose I did too until I reached about 27. My dream of having a child was not happening and then when you’re told by the medical team you’ve got PCOS which could stop you fulfilling your dream your life becomes a blur! My abiding memory of my diagnosis is being told by my work colleague that they were expecting a baby and knowing that I may never have one. My tears flowed all the way on my drive home. I suppose I tried to understand the problem by doing my own research and then it became clearer to me why ‘my normal body’ was the way it was. I suffered with weight gain always being in the 16+ size, but
in addition I had the dreaded hair in the wrong places! It made me feel glad to have an explanation but ‘cross’ with my body not working right! Every woman wants to feel beautiful but having a different body makes that harder to feel. It’s not all a sad story because after treatment, well unpleasant tablets and then a few trips to the hospital my pregnancy was confirmed and my baby arrived 9 months later and 18 years on is editing your magazine. My story doesn’t end there – PCOS still haunts me at 48 years old. In the years after childbirth (I’ve had 3 children) my body shape remained ‘difficult’. I’ve been asked so many times “are you having a baby” because the PCOS makes my stomach look pregnant! My hair gain in the wrong places stays with me but I’m learning to embrace the body I’ve got; it’s my “normal body”. I say to all you readers out there embrace the body shape you’ve got, enjoy yourself and be beautiful. You go girls! Kick that PCOS out of the park! www.bgpmagazine.co.uk

HS Advice Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries work. The main features are: - irregular periods - excess androgen, high levels of “male hormones” in your body, which may cause physical signs such as excess facial or body hair - polycystic ovaries, your ovaries become enlarged and contain many fluid-filled sacs (follicles) which surround the eggs (it’s important to note that, despite the name, if you have PCOS you don’t actually have cysts) - difficulty getting pregnant as a result of irregular ovulation or failure to ovulate - weight gain - thinning hair and hair loss from the head - oily skin or acne

Being a nurse may be many young girl’s dreams, and for Deb, she achieved that goal. She explains why although working as a nurse may not be all that laid back and as glamorous as it might appear on TV, she wouldn’t give it up for the world. Ever since I can remember I always wanted to be a nurse, even as a child I have photographs of me dressing up in a nurses uniform, so then on the 8th of September 1980 my dad dropped me off luggage in tow at St Bartholomew’s Hospital London my dreams had become a reality. I was 18 years old fresh out of sixth form and starting on my long journey. I can remember being greeted by a very stern faced house matron in a uniform with a white starched apron; I looked at her shoes and thought they were possibly the ugliest things I had ever seen! I remember her giving us all the rules and a lecture on having “none of those boys” in our rooms, after 10pm. We were handed a bag containing our uniforms and a big square of white material I remember us all looking at each other wondering what on earth we were supposed to do with this, she must have seen us and told us that it was to become our nurse’s hat!
88
www.bgpmagazine.co.uk
We were taken to our rooms in the nurse’s home which was possibly the smallest room I had ever seen, it had a single bed a table and a chair, and this was to be my home for the foreseeable future. Life was one big whirlwind we weren’t allowed on the wards instead we had to go to school where we learnt how to wash patients section by section, where to place the towels and when to change the water, we were shown how to make beds with precise hospital corners, closely followed by giving enemas, emptying bed pans and how to care for ever orifice known to man. We did have fun, lots of fun! Made close friendships, shared happy moments like when on my maternity placement
standing at the patient’s bedside gong red in the face pushing along whilst the mother was giving birth, it was here to my horror that I found some families like to eat their placenta. We also shared very sad times when having to look after a sick or dying child I will never forget the sight of my first dead body and having to perform last offices. Technology in my training was nonexistent. There were no computers and especially no voice recorded handovers. All blood pressures were done using a stethoscope and sphyg all these items I’m sure can now be found in a museum! The day I qualified was one of the best days of my life seeing how proud my mum and dad were and all the hard work the tears and tantrums, burning the candle at both ends to study had all been worth it. After I qualified I decided I wanted to work in Accident and Emergency and I LOVED IT. This is everything I
ever wanted. The diversity of the work was amazing never knowing what was going to burst through the doors next. Which ranged from a splinter in the finger to a full blown emergency like a cardiac arrest, a shooting a stabbing or an emergency delivery that needed the resuscitation room. I even became a TV STAR when channel 4 did a cutting edge documentary in my department. It was here I worked my way up the ladder and became a nursing sister another great moment in my life as a nurse. Nursing is nothing like anything thinks it is, it’s no ‘Mills and Boon’ meeting a handsome doctor, secret rendezvous in the linen cupboard, brushing hands across the bed it’s no 9 to 5 job.
www.bgpmagazine.co.uk
Nursing takes all you have, never leaving on time, no short dresses and cleavage showing like in the soaps. It is a really rewarding job and as a nurse I feel very privileged to care for people, be part of someone’s life, and see people when they are at their most vulnerable. I couldn’t think of any other job in the world I would rather do.

It hasn’t been easy getting here, it has been a really tough journey, battling through life’s hard challenges. As a young teen I developed an eating disorder. I was never content; it was one of the most difficult times in my life, getting turned down for modelling opportunities for being “too big” didn’t help. From this wonderful experience I’d like to help eating disorder charities, as there wasn’t enough help when I had one. Wish me luck! www.bgpmagazine.co.uk

NATURAL BEAUTY TIPS FOR THIS SUMMER ... The moment summer arrives, there will be many beauty related worries that creep in our minds. This is the season that affects our skin, hair and more. Therefore, it is very important that we take special care of ourselves.
1
oil your hair
Let the oil soak in for about an hour before you shampoo. After you shampoo, ensure that you deep condition your hair at least twice a week to keep your hair healthy and free from dirt
2
Pamper your face
Stick to homemade packs, because they are the best, not just in summer, but all year round! Use a mix of yoghurt, sandalwood powder, tomato juice and aloe vera gel. This mix will not only cleanse the skin, but also add a glow to your face.
3
Add the glow to your face
4
Stick to light shades in makeup
5
Protect your eyes and hair
6
De-fake-tan naturally
Ensure that you wear shades to protect your eyes and a scarf or a hat to protect your hair, face and eyes. Carry a hair spritz to tame the untidy hairs and nourish it instantly.
Try this homemade tan removal for your skin this summer – mix some curd with into gram flour. Add the juice of half a lemon to it and blend till it forms a smooth paste. Apply on your face and neck for 15 minutes and wash off with cool water.
Want to look fresh instantly? Use a face spritz to add that instant glow to your face. Remove the excess spritz with some blotting paper to reveal smooth and glowing skin.
If you love makeup, then use light shades for your eyes and lips, giving it the summer look. Avoid dark shades of make up because they will look very heavy in the summer. www.bgpmagazine.co.uk

HAIR REMOVAL TIPS THIS SUMMER WRITTEN BY MICHELLE CARTER Shaving Grace For some of us, this can be a tricky issue to tackle, depending on where the hair is you would like gone, and how sensitive your skin is to the process. There are several options on the market today, depending on the amount you want to spend. We will look at the top ten and give you the low down.Retailer wise, Boots and Superdrug supply all non-evasive options and it is recommended that you visit a clinic for laser treatment rather than a beauty salon.
Shaving
For many this is the easiest option, and is the least messy, however this can also be the most irritating for your skin and generate problems such as ingrown hairs. It is worth investing slightly more money in a shaver, rather than the cheaper disposable ones that can cause skin irritation, and unsightly red patches.
Hair Removal Cream
Probably the easiest option and good for all over the body, they have options to suite all your hair removal needs, even for the most sensitive of areas. The only downside to this option is that this can be a messy affair.
Waxing
Personally I am not a fan of waxing, I have tried cold waxing, hot waxing, sugar waxing and wax strips, I always seem to get in a mess, but seemingly this is one of the most popular options as this is quick. You are always best to get this done by a professional unless you know what you are doing.
Bleaching
A popular alternative for facial hair, if re-growth is a concern. This is a great option, however this is the easiest to get wrong, leave this on too long and it can burn your skin, so be mindful if this is your chosen option.

Epilating
Great for legs and other larger areas you wish to have fuzz free. These can take some time to get used to as they can feel quite brutal when you start using them. Eventually these should leave you pretty much hair free, if you continue to use on a regular basis, and the good thing is there are lots of options out there.
Laser Hair Removal
This option is much more long term and great if you have an issue with a certain part of your body, especially if you have facial hair that you want to get rid of. If you have Polycystic Ovary syndrome, I know that this can be a great option to overcome the unwanted hair. This is much more costly and normally takes a few visits to a clinic to notice the difference. Research clinics and make sure that the beautician / clinician is fully qualified, there have been instances with salons offering this service without fully qualified staff.

"If these things sound too good to be true, they often are" Threading
A great way of getting your eyebrows done, this doesn’t just get the dark hairs but gets all those little light fluffy ones that you don’t get with other options, this is also an inexpensive and very quick option.
Electric shaver
Electric shavers can be convenient, but can leave the skin dry, however they have some great options for wet shavers to combat this issue.
Plucking
though, you often get what you pay for, and if you are using such things for your face I would recommend that you do some research first. Home-made removal options are also out there, however I would never recommend these as you do not know what certain substances will do to your skin, and it is simply not worth the risk, if you do decided to follow one of these ‘internet’ story hair removal concoctions, try it out on a small area of skin first to see how it reacts with your skin, and leave at least 3 days to see if any reaction is had. If these things sound too good to be true they often are.
Apart from doing your eyebrows, this can be not only an eye watering process, but also a lengthy one, I once thought it would be a good idea to do this on my leg, one hour later I was getting nowhere and had a small red patch of skin, a cheap option but not one that is recommended, unless it is for the od facial hair here or there, or on the go.
Other alternatives
There are other options on the market, such as No! No! hair removal system, which is a wand like applicator and works like laser removal, this is more convenient than laser and much cheaper, be aware
