OR ten weeks this summer Gromit fever swept across Bristol. Thousands of people poured in to the city with one thing in mind – to find as many of the decorated dogs as they could. The 5ft sculptures of the popular pooch popped up all around Bristol, parts of North Somerset and South Gloucestershire – and even in Paddington Station in London – brightening up their surroundings and drawing in the crowds. People clutching trail maps and Gromit Unleashed passports could be seen around the city gathering at the different sculptures of Wallace’s trusty sidekick waiting patiently for their turn to be photographed with the next decorated dog. Gromit fans flew in from as far

afield as New Zealand and Australia, the United States and Canada. Visitors arrived from Taiwan, Abu Dhabi, Japan, Sweden, Holland and Spain to take in the Gromits. Brides posed with the Gromits for their wedding photographs and there were proposals by the sculptures and more than 4,000 people

and Gromit’s Grand Appeal saw 80 giant sculptures of Gromit being given a makeover. Internationally-recognised artists and celebrities put their mark on the dog statues before they were unleashed on the streets in July for the public arts trail. One Gromit was flown out to California so that he could be given the Toy Story treatment by animation firm Pixar who turned the hound into the character Buzz Lightyear. When it was announced that Zayn Malik from boy band One Direction had decorated one of the dogs the excitement on social media site Twitter caused so many people to visit the Gromit Unleashed site it crashed. There were also Gromits decorated by fashion designers Sir Paul Smith, Cath Kidston and Celia Birtwell. Children’s author and illustrators Sir Quentin Blake and Raymond Briggs gave Gromit a makeover, along with Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler and creator of Where’s Wally, Martin Handford.

Actress Joanna Lumley, comedian Harry Hill and musician and presenter Jools Holland. A host of Bristol artists also put their mark on Gromit, some taking inspiration from the city – with Bristolian words on Bark at ‘Ee, a Bristol bus and also Bristol Bulldog plane among the creations that went on display. Local street artists were also among the people giving Nick Park’s creation a makeover. There was also a Gromit covered in new pennies and another with gold mosaic tiles. While the decorated dogs were a source of joy for the thousands of people visited them over the hot summer, Gromit Unleashed will have a longer-term impact on patients at Bristol Children’s Hospital. On October 3 all of the Gromits will go up for sale at auction with television presenter and Sotheby’s auctioneer Tim Wonnacott doing all he can on the night to raise as much money as possible for the hospital’s expansion appeal.

ISITORS to the Gromit Unleashed trail over the summer may, or may not, have spotted a man in a hat and sunglasses standing apart from the crowd taking in the scene. Anyone who did see such a figure hanging back and watching the crowd around the decorated dogs probably didn’t realise they were in the presence of the man who created the dog who inspired the craze that swept across Bristol this summer. Nick Park, revealed that he made his trips to visit the decorated dogs in disguise so he could just watch people’s reaction to the Giant Gromit sculptures without distracting from them. The unassuming animator has been overwhelmed by the project to place dozens of 5ft sculptures of the character he created at college around Bristol and beyond ever since the Grand Appeal charity approached him about it. Despite the Oscars he has won for his films Mr Park admits to still being amazed by the response to the characters of Wallace and Gromit but while he was “thrilled” at the suggestion he admitted having niggling doubts about whether anyone would want to put their mark on statues of his famous dog. And when the film-maker was mobbed by hundreds of fans after driving the train pulling the first sculptures into Bristol’s Harbourside on the day Gromit Unleashed was launched he was taken aback by the “incredible” reaction of the public. “I’m still that young film-maker at heart and have to pinch myself with just how big Gromit has become,” he said. “To have him leading this campaign is just incredible for me, that my characters I made as a student have such a big profile.” Of the welcome he received by the crowds outside the M shed on launch day, Mr Park said: “I have never seen anything like it before. “I am very aware of the warmth there is for Aardman and Wallace and Gromit but to see it like that is just incredible. I didn’t expect it at all.” And despite the popularity of Wallace’s pal across Bristol throughout the summer, humble Mr Park played down his role crediting the children’s hospital charity he is patron of as the reason for Gromit Unleashed’s success. “Obviously it is very much down to what it’s about and the generous spir-

● Nick joins Gromit hunters on the trail, where he’s warmly welcomed it of people who want to support the children’s hospital which is so valuable here,” he said. “But there is also Gromit and Gromit is a local creation and it is for something very valuable to people so it has got everything going.” It cannot be denied, however, that it was Mr Park’s pull that led to Gromit Unleashed attracting such big name artists and celebrities to decorate the giant dogs. Mr Park said that he first met John Lasseter of Pixar – the animation studio behind Toy Story and Monsters Inc who created Gromit Lightyear for the trail – in the city during what was then known as the Bristol Animation Festival before Toy Story had been made and he said the pair have remained friends. It was in chatting to Harry Hill at the Queen’s celebration of the arts in London last summer that Mr Park discovered the comedian liked to paint and asked him to get involved And the film-maker was also thrilled to welcome Simon Tofield, of Simon’s Cat to decorate a Gromit with his character and for Joanna Lumley and Gerald Scarfe, among many others to be involved. When it came to his own re-interpretation of the character Mr Park said he had turned to Gromit’s pal Wallace for inspiration. “I thought ‘what would Wallace do?’ he said. “First of all I was going to cover him with cheese wallpaper but one of the most talked about things about the films is the newspaper headlines. “And it includes a tribute to the Evening Post. “I came up with lots of plans, drew

lots of pictures and lots of headlines from the movies and a lot of new ones.” But rather than simply adding newsprint to the popular pooch, Mr Park decided he needed to involve inventor Wallace. “We didn’t want Wallace to feel left out of it,” he said. “That’s why mine is a small Gromit. If it was a big one Wallace would have been too big, so I went with one of the smaller ones that have been going around schools and we made a Wallace in proportion.” Of his own Gromiting visits Mr Park said: “I’ve been out with various people and just stood around and haven’t been noticed at all. “I have been wearing a hat and sunglasses and all the emphasis has been on Gromit. It has been really nice to see that there is always a crowd around him.” He did not escape unrecognised during a visit to Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion on the last weekend of the trail, however. As soon as Mr Park was spotted by the statue near the Clifton Suspension Bridge ready for photoshoot, a queue of fans turned their attention on him, asking for his signature on their trail maps, which he willingly did, adding a sketch of Gromit to each. Mr Park said he felt there had been a “feel-good factor around Gromit Unleashed, with the public really embracing it. “I hear people talk about Gromit all the time – Gromiting and Gromiteering – and that every child knows his name, I feel very gratified by that. It’s nice, there is a real love and war mth.”

Goodbye Gromit Behind the scenes

With Gromit every step, from Nicola Masters has been involved in the Gromit Unleashed project right from its inception. Mike Norton spoke to her about the highs and lows of organising the world’s first Gromit trail.

EPB-E01-S4

I

T was like one of those “to me, to you” scenes from an episode of The Chuckle Brothers. Except this one starred Harry Hill. And it was the unlikely moment that the reality of the Gromit Unleashed project hit home to Nicola Masters. The director of Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal – the charity behind Gromit Unleashed, which raises money for Bristol Children’s Hospital – was delivering a statue to the comedian’s home in London so that he could paint it. But they were having trouble manoeuvring the five-foot fibreglass model up the steps to the front door of his house. Which is how Nicola found herself at one end of a giant Gromit with Harry Hill at the other. “It was a bit of an adventure,” she told the Bristol Post: “Harry had to come out and help us carry it up to the front door. He was exactly the same as you see him on the telly. An utterly charming man. We eventually left it in his drawing room.” And Harry Hill was by no means the only celebrity who agreed to paint a Gromit and take personal delivery of it. “Artist Raymond Briggs’ delivery was a real struggle, too,” Nicola laughed: “It took five of us and a wheelbarrow to get it in to his garden shed because it wouldn’t go in to his house. If anybody had a camera that day they would have had a few laughs.” The delivery to Gerald Scarfe’s home was equally memorable – because it ended with the artist’s celebrity chef and actress wife Jane Asher cooking lunch for Nicola and her team. “His house is set on a hillside and he has this sort of motorised train that took his Gromit from the lorry and around the garden to squeals of delight from his grandchildren who were following it. “He graciously asked us in for a coffee and there was Jane Asher who immediately welcomed all three of us in to her family home and invited us to stay for lunch. She did spaghetti and meatballs, it was lovely.” These were just some of the many bizarre – and magical - moments during what has been a two-year task for Nicola and her small team. Because while, for us, Gromit Unleashed meant ten weeks of carefree Gromiting, for Nicola, the project

meant 20 months of planning, hard work, worry and excitement. She was there right from the start at the brainstorming meeting with Aardman Animations that sparked the idea for the trail. Since then, she and her team have been involved in the co-ordination of creating the sculptures, securing sponsorship for them, selecting artists to paint them, naming them, finding the best spots to put them and managing the merchandise. And delivering many of them to artists. Of course, having the idea was the easy part. How did it all come together? “We are really fortunate to have Nick Park as a patron and the Grand Appeal has been using the Wallace and Gromit characters for 18 years. So the first thing we did was go to Nick and ask him if he’d seen some of the other public arts trails and whether or not he felt it was right for Gromit. He had and he loved the idea

straight away. And that was really the start of it. Once Nick was on board, it was much easier to make things happen.” Nicola cannot praise the team at Aardman enough for the work they’ve put in to the trail: “It really is a joint effort, a partnership project. And it’s the first time ever that a licensed character has been used in one of these public art trails.” Gromit creator Nick Park was also instrumental in encouraging many of the artists and celebrities to get involved. He wrote to friends and colleagues around the world asking them if they would be willing to take part. And received a fantastic response. At the same time, a call went out to artists to submit designs. In the end, the team received more than 500 submissions from worldwide artists who wanted to paint a Gromit. The next challenge was sponsors.

be a big task to get to 50. But then we got to 60 and 70. Then we got to 80 and we felt we absolutely had to close it down. But there are still half a dozen more companies who are interested in supporting us and being part of it.” So, with sponsors and artists on board, the trail needed its most important element – a giant Gromit. That, said Nicola, “took a long time. We started with a little six-inch model of Gromit from the studio. From that, he went over the bridge to South

Wales where he was made in to a five-foot polystyrene polysculpt. And we took him in to Aardman’s studio and Nick saw him for the first time and everyone just said ‘wow’. Seeing something at five foot from being tiny sort of takes your breath away really. And with some minor adjustments, from that polysculpt he was turned in to a fibreglass model.” There was also the inevitable brush with health and safety: “They had to

“We couldn’t have made this happen without the sponsors,” said Nicola: “We threw away the rule book really and went to a number of companies who have been very supportive of the Grand Appeal over the years and invited them to be founding sponsors.” And it was with the backing of those founding sponsors that the charity was able to go to other companies in Bristol and sell the idea of the Gromit trail. The response was extraordinary: “We thought it would

● The Gromit Unleashed project even had its own “Gromit whisperer” – at least that was what the team called its troubleshooting Bristol artist Vivi Cuevas, inset. As well as designing one of the trail Gromits, right, Vivi has worked out of Aardman for most of this year helping to create some of the Gromit merchandise. “We were very fortunate to have Vivi,” said Nicola: “She has been our sort of artist-inresidence for the whole time, helping us to create lots of little sculptures of Gromit. And if any of the Gromits have been damaged, Vivi’s had the job of repainting them.”

There’s still a few surprises left in store... From page 7 be strength tested,” Nicola laughs, “We had people – plural – standing on the ears, standing on the tail, making sure the steel reinforcement was robust enough.” But running the Gromit Unleashed trail was by no means all easy. For Nicola, the lowest point of the project was the vandalism of several Gromits, especially the one designed by Joanna Lumley. “She was so delightful. Sending us emails and ringing us up saying that Gromit was in her studio and she was playing him classical music while she painted him. She was an absolute delight to work with, really really lovely. So it was horrible to see her work damaged like that. It was one of the first statues to go out on the trail and having it vandalised within six or eight hours was one of the worst moments for everybody on the trail. It was a real low point.” The tail of Ms Lumley’s Gromit was torn off and Nicola still doesn’t know how: “It was malicious damage. Somebody used something to do that and it must have taken massive force. We’ve had big men trying to replicate it and haven’t been able to do so.” In reality, however, not much did go wrong – which Nicola puts down to careful planning and to the “small but fantastic” Gromit Unleashed team. With the trail and Gromit’s 10-week adventure completed, Nicola is now fixated on the auction of the statues. And she is very focused on what the outcome should be: “It is all about the money. Anything we can do to add to

But watch this space.” So is she relieved that the project is coming to an end? “No. We’ll all be really sad actually. They become like your family, like your babies,” she laughed. “When we had them in our secret painting space and we knew they had to go out on the trail we thought ‘Is anyone going to look after them and love them the way that we’ve loved them?’. But the public has been absolutely fantastic and looked after them. We’ve even seen people out cleaning the Gromits who aren’t part of our team. So they’ve been absolutely brilliant and really taken to them. “We couldn’t have asked for any more than that.”

What’s in a name?

EPB-E01-S4

● Isambark Kingdog Brunel HAVING secured sponsorship for 80 Gromits, the Gromit Unleashed team then had to name them – and find places to put them in Bristol. Nicola said many of the names came out of more brainstorming meetings with Aardman: “We were lucky to have all the creatives at Aardman to help us. Between them and us we tried to get some Wallace & Gromit humour in to the

● Shipshape And Bristol Fashion names of the sculptures. It was someone at Aardman who came up with Isambark Kingdog Brunel.” But the artists suggested names, too: “Joanna Lumley named her own sculpture Poetry in Motion. All the local artists were asked to suggest names. Some were absolutely wonderful and others we just played with a bit to make them interesting and to try to give them a second identity.

● The Gromolo

● Salty Seadog

Bark at ’Ee, for example, started out as Ark at ’Ee after the famous Bristol T-shirt and then the artist Leigh Flurry suggested we change it.” Finding 80 locations was no mean feat either, involving long negotiations with Bristol City Council, particularly over the indoor spots. “We wanted to find the right locations, iconic Bristol locations” said Nicola.

“Then we did a matching-up process to try to put the right Gromit in the right place.” So Shipshape and Bristol Fashion went up by the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Axel Scheffler’s Gromalo went in to the children’s library. Queen Square became the very Bristol home for Bark at ’Ee. And the pirate Gromit Salty Seadog was placed next to waterfall steps on The Centre.

● Bark at Ee Finally, the logistical exercise of putting the 80 Gromits out on the streets took two weeks of planning and three days, working 18 hours a day. “We had trucks and lorries and a special fork lift going up tiny little streets in Clifton that the lorry couldn’t fit up. There were all sorts of fun and games trying to get the Gromits in to their locations,” laughed Nicola.

Goodbye Gromit Ground-breaking technology

Gromit sale will boost hospital’s expansion Vicki Mathias Health reporter vicki.mathias@b-nm.co.uk

W

HILE the Gromit sculptures have left the streets of Bristol they are set to leave an even bigger legacy in the city – by improving the treatment and experience of young patients in the city. The decorated dogs have been making thousands of visitors to the city smile throughout the summer, but more importantly the money they raise at auction should help to put smiles on the faces of young patients at Bristol Children’s Hospital who are set to get even better care as a result. Money raised through the auction of the popular statues will transform parts of the city centre hospital to make them more pleasant for patients and their parents while also paying for the very latest technology to be installed. Funds from the Gromit Unleashed auction next month will go towards the expansion appeal, which will add ground-breaking technology and some finishing touches to departments at the city centre hospital. Children’s burns and neurosciences are moving to the city centrebased regional hospital next year and the NHS is spending £30 million to make space for the additional departments. The Grand Appeal has pledged a minimum of £3.5million for the extras that will really enhance the service. The charity was set up in 1995 to raise £12 million towards the new children’s hospital, which opened six years later. Film favourites Wallace and Gromit were donated as mascots for the charity back then and have continued to be the face of the cause ever since. Aardman’s Peter Lord, Nick Park and David Sproxton are patrons of the charity and have continued to support it with a host of their characters and creations, but most notably Wallace and Gromit, with Gromit Un-

leashed being the latest way in which the clay creations have helped the cause. The expansion appeal, which is being supported with money raised through Gromit Unleashed has several strands to it. The biggest difference will come from an intraoperative MRI scanner – which will become the first in the south of England. There is currently only one in the UK, at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. “This will be the first one in the whole of the south of England and there are only about five paediatric ones in Europe,” director of the Grand Appeal Nicola Masters said. Among the benefits of the scanner would be in the case of a child with a brain tumour. Precision is important in removing the whole tumour in one go and having access to the scanner in the operating theatre means that surgeons can have a better idea of how they are doing during the procedure. “Essentially you can get everything done in one go rather than having to come back for multiple procedures,” Ms Masters said. “It has revolutionised that area and the development of neuro-surgical procedures. It is ground-breaking.” A cardiac hybrid theatre will also be created at the hospital, which is set to become a regional specialist centre for heart surgery, to provide a “one-stop shop” for patients who will require both scanning and operations at the same time. Combining the procedures limits the number of separate scans patients will have to go for as everything can be checked during surgery, reducing exposure to radiation. “The more we can do to help a child who has a serious heart defect through that process the better,” Ms Masters said. “The cardiac hybrid theatre also helps the timeframe because by the time a child has an operation, has a scan, comes back and has another operation and another scan, being able to do everything at the same time makes the whole procedure quicker.” There is also an appeal to support the combining of the cancer and bone marrow transplant units at the hospital while improving the facilities

● Wallace and Gromit are mascots of the Grand Appeal, set up in 1995; inset left, appeal director Nicola Masters for patients. It will create en-suite bedrooms for long-stay patients, facilities for their parents and a new conservatory area to create an outdoor space within the hospital for patients who cannot leave. Art work for the new neurosciences and burns units will also be funded by the Grand Appeal to improve the environment for patients. “This is important too as children don’t want to be treated in sterile environments, they want fun and artwork,” Ms Masters said. “That is also very much part of what we see our role as providing.” Ms Masters said that the new technology the charity is looking to fund could not have been imagined when they set about fundraising the build of the hospital 18 years ago.

“When you think we built the hospital in 2001, we couldn’t have imagined or dreamt of the procedures that can be done with the hybrid theatre and intra-operative MRI back then,” she said. “There has been such a transition in healthcare, even in our time as a charity – 12 years after the hospital opened we have these ground-breaking, pioneering pieces of equipment that were not available then. That’s really what the Grand Appeal is for. “It’s not our job to replace statutory funding, that’s the job of the NHS. “What we pay for are the additional enhancements to the service the NHS can’t meet or cannot for a long time, which would be to the detriment of patient care.” And she hopes that the affection

people have shown for Gromit over the summer will go a long way towards supporting the charity’s ambitions. “We hope the auction will raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for us,” she said. “People have taken Gromit Unleashed to their hearts and have been very proud of it.” She added: “We know that Bristol Children’s Hospital is the heart of the city but it also provides a major service throughout the South West, South Wales and further afield,” Ms Masters said. “We want the patients treated in Bristol Children’s Hospital to have the very best chance and access to the very best equipment they possibly can to help their journey throughout their treatment.”

Goodbye Gromit Wacky and wild fundraising schemes

We’re all right on the money Vicki Mathias Chief Gromit reporter vicki.mathias@b-nm.co.uk

I

T was not only the artists and celebrities involved with Gromit Unleashed who got creative – a host of fundraisers came up with weird and wonderful ways of using the decorated dogs to raise money for charity. People came up with inventive ways of incorporating the giant sculptures into their efforts in support of Bristol Children’s Hospital. Some cycled between all the statues, some ran around all the Gromits in the city and others danced from one sculpture to another. With Gromit Unleashed raising money for the Grand Appeal’s Bristol Children’s Hospital expansion fund supporters felt that it would only be apt to get the Gromits involved in the fundraising. One dad decided to become the first person to visit all 80 of the sculptures within 24 hours when he set about an endurance challenge that involved cycling and running between locations.

● Number of miles Graham Wadsworth ran and cycled to get round the Gromits – starting from Paddington Graham Wadsworth from Southville cycled and ran a total of 200 miles, starting his challenge at the Gromit in London Paddington at midnight. The personal trainer cycled along the A4 and on to Gromits at Westonbirt and Hawkesbury Upton, on to The Mall at Cribbs Causeway and the Gromits nearby, then rode towards the Chew Valley, on to Cheddar Gorge, the airport, Tyntesfield and through Ashton Court before leaving his bike in Clifton and running the rest of the route around the sculptures in the city. He undertook the challenge because his baby son Luke had surgery to correct a heart defect after he was bor n. Having taken part in triathlons in the past Mr Wadsworth knew he needed to raise the bar for his fundraising challenge and also recruited clients, colleagues and friends to take part in stages of the challenge. Nurses from the paediatric intensive care unit at Bristol Children’s Hospital took their inspiration from Wallace and Gromit films for a fancy dress Gromit hunt. There was a Wallace, pesky penguin Feathers McGraw from The Wrong Trousers, and Wendolene and Shaun the sheep from A Close Shave among the group who were collecting donations for Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal as they made their way around the statues.

● Morris troupe dances around a Gromit at Windmill Hill City Farm Leo Ikin, 31, of Hotwells, and Marcus Kropacsy, 40, of Cotham ran about 25 miles around 67 of the Gromits in the Bristol area – with Mr Ikin opting to complete the challenge in a Gromit costume. They were joined in their efforts Jim Plunkett-Cole, from Frome, and his border collie Alfredo. Other colleagues from Lloyds,

where Mr Ikin and Mr Kropacsy work took in 53 Gromits in a similar challenge. Morris dancers from Rag Morris held a Dances with Dogs tour of the Gromits on the final Saturday of the trail, performing dances with sticks and hankies at each of the 32 sculptures they reached. Artist Frankie Woods took a more

sedate approach to using the Gromits to raise money for the charity. The Cheddar 63-year-old visited about 60 of the Gromits recording them in her own way – by sketching the statues on her iPad and raising more than £1,800 in the process. She even showed her pictures to Gromit creator Nick Park when he stopped by while she was sketching Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion. Sponsors and hosts of Gromit sculptures also used them as inspiration for their fundraising. At Windmill Hill City Farm, which was host to Grrrrromit, people could buy Gromelettes – Wallace and Gromit-themed omelettes made with Wensleydale cheese and the Pump House, which was home to the strawberry-themed Gromberry, was offering strawberries and cream to raise money for the cause. Hotels and cafes also came up with Gromit-themed afternoon teas, biscuits and even cocktails to raise more money for the charity through the trail. Haseltine Lake LLP, sponsors of Trevor Baylis’ What a Wind Up!, held a fundraising day with cakes, a tombola, and a guess-the-numberof-dog-biscuits game. Harveys at Cribbs Causeway also had a cake sale

to raise more money on the last weekend that its Gromit The Wild West was at the store. While the Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury Upton joined forces with Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club to help raise money for the children’s hospital charity. The Rotary club’s annual fundraising walk took in the pub’s Gromit Harmony as part of its route on the final day of Gromit Unleashed. And it was not just the fundraisers who were coming up with unique ways to visit all of the Gromits. Some took to the trail in Wallace and Gromit-themed fancy dress, including David Donelly who sported a papier mache Wallace head during his Gromit-spotting visit from London. Others dressed up to complement their favourite Gromits in outfits matching or depicting some of the characters on the trail. And some decided to take their own dogs walkies along the trail for a spot of Gromit-spotting, including the Border Terrier Posse. obvious understanding that the look should make reference to the Gromit they had designed. Each was given a date for inclusion and asked to send the artwork back in digital form two days earlier. And, from the arrival of the very first piece of artwork, all my fears were allayed. It came from Dave Bain, who designed the Feathers Gromit, and its subtle, colourful mix of birds’ heads and feathers complemented the statue perfectly. Dealing with the artists was a pleasure. Very few had to be chased and what struck me most about all of them was their modesty. So many of them wrote and hoped what they had done was “suitable”. And it was always much more than that. But don’t take my word for it. You can judge them for yourself over the next few pages – a unique collaboration and collection that is unlikely to be repeated. I can’t thank them all enough for taking the trouble to do it.

t was with some trepidation that I offered Gromit artists the opportunity to redesign the Bristol Post logo. I had agreed to artistic re-drawings of the logo (what we call the masthead) just once before – giving it over for a week to five street artists during last year’s See No Evil exhibition. The results looked fantastic. Five very different and distinctive versions of our logo. However, from a newspaper sales point of view, the experiment was something of a disaster. Sales were down for the week – which was attributed to the fact that, without its distinctive masthead, readers couldn’t identify the paper. And that was just for a week. This time, more than 40 artists had kindly agreed to take part. More than a month’s worth. Gulp. My brief to the artists was, well, brief. Each was provided with a digital outline of the masthead to ensure they based it on our typeface. The rest was up to them with the
