I spy with my little eye... another iPad

P

ARENTS have switched from I-spy to iPads as in-car entertainment for their children, reveals the AA as research shows children are 12 times more distracting to drivers than mobile phones.

AA/Populus research shows that nearly a third (30 per cent) of drivers said their parents played games like I-spy to keep them entertained on long car trips.

But this halved to 14 per cent when asked what they did as parents to keep their own children entertained on car journeys.

Modern parents turn to technology to keep their children or young relatives entertained in the car with six per cent saying they use hand-held electronic games or watch DVDs, three per cent let the children play on smart phones and two per cent rely on watching television through a tablet or PC. Drivers in London and Northern Ireland were the least likely to say they entertain child passengers with

games like I-spy (12 per cent). And giving children a DVD to watch was most popular among drivers from Scotland, the North East and North West (all seven per cent).

Keeping children entertained and happy on car journeys can help reduce the level of distraction they pose to a driver.

The importance of this is highlighted by the fact that in-car driver distractions were a contributory factor in three per cent of all accidents on UK roads in 2012.

These statistics also show that the driver or rider “failing to look properly” was the most commonly cited contributory factor in UK road accidents (42 per cent).

Sudden braking (seven per cent), swerving (four per cent) and loss of control (14 per cent) were also all common contributory factors in road accidents, which can easily arise if a driver has become distracted from the task in hand.

Renault tweak another 70bhp from the RCZ FRENCH car maker Peugeot is to launch a hot version of its striking RCZ coupe. The car will hit the showrooms in January priced at £31,995.

Inspired by the firm’s RCZ Racing Cup track car, the flagship model rides 10mm lower than the rest of the RCZ range. Power comes from a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 270bhp.

Alongside the heavily reworked petrol motor, Peugeot has included a specially strengthened six-speed manual transmission, uprated

clutch, larger intercooler and new twin-scroll turbocharger. The exhaust has also been modified, and features an enhanced ‘sound system’ to amplify the sporting character of the new RCZ R’s engine.

A trick differential has been added to the car’s specification to provide additional grip, while the front and rear track have been widened to further boost traction.

Other upgrades include revised dampers settings, plus stiffened springs and anti-roll bar.

Aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability have been boosted, thanks to a new fixed boot spoiler. Finally, Peugeot’s hot RCZ R rides on unique two-tone 19-inch alloys which accommodate new, larger brakes.

Boasting a two-second faster time around the famous Nurburgring than the regular 200bhp RCZ, the R variant will sprint to 62mph from rest in 5.9 seconds and go on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

McLarens and Metro 6R4 in spotlight at Race Retro ’14 RACE Retro 2014, the international historic motorsport show, will celebrate two motorsport greats when it returns to Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, in February.

The show (from Friday to Sunday, February 21 to 23) pays tribute to the racing pedigree of McLaren and the rallying success of the MG Metro 6R4.

Marking 50 years since the formation of Bruce McLaren’s eponymous company, the central feature will be the McLaren M23 F1 car driven by Emerson Fittipaldi to take the 1974 F1 double, drivers and constructors world championships.

Make time, be prepared Don’t let this winter take you by surprise

HE Highways Agency is urging drivers to “Make Time for Winter” by preparing themselves and their vehicles to help keep the roads running smoothly.

Their latest research shows that around half of drivers do not check their vehicles or carry de-icer with them when they travel in severe weather.

Roads Minister Robert Goodwill says: “The Highways Agency does all it can to keep the roads open during severe weather. But drivers need to play their part too by making simple vehicle checks, carrying a few important items and planning their journeys according to the weather.

“In very severe weather, drivers need to consider whether their journey is really necessary.”

However, the Highways Agency’s research shows that 45 per cent of drivers do not make any vehicle checks and 28 per cent do not take any of the items in the suggested emergency kit. Fifty-three per cent do not even carry de-icer.

don-Wilson, says: “The Highways Agency is well-prepared for ice and snow. We have more than 500 salt spreading vehicles, ploughs and snow blowers, and 270,000 tonnes of salt already in stock.

“Using detailed weather forecasts, we treat the road network before road temperatures fall below freezing – often at night in preparation for peak traffic periods.

“But that doesn’t mean people

should drive as they normally would – they still need to take care, as they would during any kind of adverse weather, and plan ahead.”

The Highways Agency provides real-time traffic information for the motorways and other strategic roads in England using a range of channels, including the web, social media and through national and local radio stations.

C3 comes of age with new engine range Citroen’s C3 has been revitalised with hi-tech three-cylinder petrol engines, Airdream micro hybrid diesel technology and a smarter look.

Verdict Citroen’s C3 supermini has always focused on comfort and value, along with an extra dash of the kind of innovation we expect from this enduring French brand. Now, in tune with the times, it’s also very efficient.

T

HIS revised, smarter, secondgeneration version gets a clever range of three-cylinder Pure Tech engines that transform its petrol proposition, plus a clutch of Airdream micro hybrid diesel models that’ll cost just pennies to run. The result still isn’t sporty, but, as before, the ride’s great, the interior’s smart and the boot’s practical. The C3, it seems, has come of age.

Here, we have the lightly revised sleeker-looking version of Citroen’s second generation C3 supermini, a car we first saw in facelifted form the spring of 2013 and a design that, as ever, shares engines and underpinnings with similarly-sized Peugeot models.

Indeed, it shares the Peugeot 208’s high-tech range of 1.0 and 1.2-litre threecylinder petrol engines. This means that, at last, the C3 has a credible petrol-engined line-up. Previously, you had to stretch to a pricey HDi diesel if you wanted a really efficient version of this car.

If Citroen can get that message across to potential buyers, it could make all the difference to their sales prospects in this segment. This model is, after all, already rather refreshing in its refusal to prioritise the sportiness that other brands seem to feel is necessary in their small runabouts. The French brand has its more dynamic three-door DS3 line to provide that.

First up in the engine department is a 1.0-litre 68bhp unit that needs to be revved quite hard if you’re to get anywhere near the quoted performance fig-

ures (rest to 62mph in 14.2s en route to just 101mph). Much better is the 1.2-litre 82bhp version.

Ignore the older 1.4 and 1.6-litre VTi units that are mainly there to cater for green pump buyers who want an automatic gearbox option. If you really must have some kind of automatic gearbox in your C3, it’s probably better to order it with a diesel engine, but in that case, you’ll be limited to the pricier of the two 70bhp 1.4-litre HDi units – the so-called e-HDi 70 Airdream EGS variant. There are also a couple of manual gearbox 1.6-litre HDi diesel variants, developing either 90 or 115bhp.

As before, features like the bulbous roof and the low side window line give the cabin an airy feel that makes it feel bigger than it is, something that’ll be further emphasised if you get yourself a Panoramic Zenith windscreen, increasing the front passengers’ field of vision from 28 to 108 degrees.

Up front, there are classy analogue instruments, plus expensive-looking plastics, flashes of chrome and a neat strip across the dashboard that’s available in a selection of colours. Out back, you’ll find one of the largest luggage bays in the supermini segment, though there’s quite a high loading lip. At 300 litres in size, it’s ten per cent bigger than a Fiesta and offers nearly as much room as in a bigger Ford Focus.

Included in the asking price is a good quality CD stereo with at least four speakers, steering wheel-mounted controls and an aux-in socket, power front windows and mirrors, split-folding rear

seats, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a multi-function trip computer and a 12v socket.

Almost every fashionable type of technology has been thrown at this car to drive its running costs down, but as usual, you won’t find all of it across the range. Most of the eco-features are reserved for e-HDi Airdream diesel models, cars like the 1.4-litre e-HDi Airdream EGS variant that manages 83.1mpg on the combined cycle and 87g/km of CO2.

Further up the C3 diesel range, the pokier 1.6-litre e-HDi models are manual-only but they’re still pretty frugal.

The e-HDi 90 Airdream variant manages 78.5mpg and 95g/km of CO2, while thanks to an extra sixth speed in the gearbox, the top e-HDi 115 Airdream version delivers 74.4mpg and 99g/km.

The old 1.4 and 1.6 VTi petrol engines aren’t notably frugal, the 1.6 VTi unit, for example, returning 49.6mpg on the combined cycle and 132g/km of CO2.

The entry-level 68bhp 1.0-litre unit delivers 65.7mpg on the combined cycle and 99g/km of CO2, while even the pokier 1.2-litre VTi 82bhp unit manages 61.4mpg and 107g/km.

True, as superminis go, this isn’t an orthodox choice, but then that’s part of its appeal. In true Citroen fashion, a C3 is just that little bit different, with smart, slightly quirky looks and, if specified, that uniquely clever extended windscreen.

What it lacks in driving dynamism, it makes up for in quality, refinement and a cosseting ride. Indeed, I can think of few sensibly-sized small cars better suited to urban motoring than this one.

Little V-Strom proves a master of versatility

HE 2013 Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS has had its Gladius engine tweaked to provide more zip and make this versatile Suzuki more of a sports adventurer than a soft sports tourer that its predecessor tended to be. In previous versions it had never been the best looking bike in the field and some would say that it was downright ugly, but this latest version has been smartened up some what and is much more appealing on the eye.

What makes this V-Strom so endearing is that it does all the important things so well. It is comfortable to ride, sporty yet immensely practical at the same time. If you have deep pockets then there’s plethora of accessories that you can add to this bike including crash bars, centre-stand, heated grips, hand guards, quick release panniers and a top box to name but a few.

The 650 V-Strom may not be the most up to date, cutting edge model you could choose but it is still great fun to ride down a B-road and unless you’re used to

litre class race reps, it feels properly quick and still has the ability to put a smile on your face.

The familiar 645cc V-twin engine has lost none of its ability despite its advancing years and the latest tweaks mean that you now have 68bhp to call on, up 3bhp on the old model.

Also, its decent low down torque gives this V-Strom good pick-up

out of slower corners meaning you won’t need to worry too much about which gear you are in.
