HE picture of the housing market is looking more and more rosy, as another house builder releases encouraging figures. In its latest report, Persimmon Homes reports visitors to its developments have increased by 20 per cent ahead of last year, while weekly private sales are up 45 per cent ahead of last year since July 1, 2013. Managing director of Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, Carl Haley, says improvements are continuing. “The introduction of the Gover nmentsponsored Help to Buy equity loan scheme in April 2013, which is only available to buyers of new homes, has proved particularly attractive, with more than 3,000 new homes sold by Persimmon under this scheme,” said Carl. “In our experience locally, it’s not just first-time buyers who are taking advantage of the scheme, but also second-time buyers looking to either move up the property ladder or simply cut the cost of their outgoings. “The Government has also recently launched the second part of the Help to Buy scheme. However this is not an equity loan, but a Government guaranteed mortgage. In our experience of the local market, we don’t believe this will have such an impact, due to the limited number of lenders involved and the higher interest rates.” Speaking about new sites in the region, Carl said: “Here in the South West we are working hard to deliver more new homes to the people who desperately need them. So far this year we have opened seven new sites – including housing orientated for families at Wren Gardens, Bridgwater, marina apartments at our Galatea and Aurora blocks at Portishead, two new exciting outlets at Haywood Village, Weston-super-Mare, and our first development for a number of years in Yate – Westerleigh Park. “We also launched our refurbishment of Allen House in Bristol and expect to open a further six at the turn of the year, The Oaks, Matson Lane, Gloucester; Lyde Green, Emersons Green; Albright Court, Portishead; Mill Lane, Congresbury, and Mulberry Park, Burnham-on-Sea. “We continue to work closely with local authorities in our region to move developments forward and we’re particularly looking forward to the results of the Government’s current consultation on the localised housing standards associated with obtaining planning consents.
