● Rangeworthy’s Dave Haynes, left, battles with Alex Sergeant, of Lawes Juniors, for the ball Picture: Dan Regan Jon Burt, and Richings marked his return to action with a perfectly-placed spot kick into the bottom left corner of the net. Rangeworthy had to survive some hairy moments at the start of the second period, not least when Brown contrived to slice Greenland’s delivery wide from bang in front of target. The visitors were made to pay when Jack Dorney’s good work outside the area enabled Davies, surrounded by defenders, to shoot low across the goalkeeper and inside the far post to put the hosts ahead. A minute later, Bendall was perfectly positioned in the centre of goal to meet Greenland’s centre with a powerful header past striker-by-trade Wilson into the net to restore parity for Lawes, much to Rangeworthy’s frustration. With the travelling team now in the ascendancy, it was Alex Sargent’s turn to squander a gilt-edged opportunity, somehow steering a header from point-blank range past the far post. But, with 13 minutes remaining, he was celebrating, along with his team-mates, a third Lawes goal. Substitute Pat Reilly had set things in motion with a surging run into the box and, while his shot was beaten on to the post by Wilson, and Bendall was unable to force home the rebound, Beazer drove the ball

● Ollie Bendall celebrates scoring Lawes Juniors’ opening goal in from the right and Sargent was there to turn it over the line with a skilful finish from 12 yards out. Broken but unbowed, Rangeworthy weren’t finished and, after Jake Haynes had darted on to Davies through pass before stinging the hands of Freeman with a fierce attempt, they dramatically levelled the contest two minutes from time. Haynes again played a per-

fectly-weighted ball through to Richings on the run, and the left-sided midfielder planted an unerring finish into the far corner of the net to make it 3-3 and take the tie to penalties. Things looked bleak straight away for Rangeworthy as O’Sullivan and Sargent netted for Lawes, while Shae Mitchell saw his effort saved and the luckless Richings rattled the bar as the home side trailed 2-0. But they quickly hauled themselves back into it as Bendall struck a post for Lawes and Reilly’s strike was brilliantly beaten away by the leaping Wilson, the scene set for Miles and Davies to tuck away their penalties for Rangeworthy to make it 2-2. It wasn’t to be for Luff ’s men, though, as Brown made no mistake with Lawes’ final ‘take’, while the usually-deadly Wilson, who had enjoyed a decent stint between the sticks, saw his effort well kept out by his opposite number Freeman for a match-winning save. Rangeworthy: Brian Wilson; Dean Smith, Mike Hicks, Dave Coombe, Shae Mitchell; Dave Haynes (Chris Milton, 84), Ben Miles, Joe Davies, Mark Richings; Jack Dorney (Shady Fahmy, 68), Jake Haynes. Not used: Colin Luff. Lawes Juniors: Paul Freeman; Stephen Beazer, David O’Sullivan, Jon Burt, Andy Venables; David Brown, Dom Wall (Pat Reilly, 70), Marcus Street, Mark Greenland; Alex Sargent, Ollie Bendall. LAWES Juniors believe they have the capacity to go on and win the GFA Junior Cup following their first-round shootout success at Rangeworthy. The Downs League outfit were beaten finalists in 2005 and, after dispensing of their Bristol and District first division opponents after an enthralling end-to-end encounter, the happy visitors were setting their sights much higher. Player-boss David O’Sullivan said: “We feel as though we’ve beaten one of the best sides in the competition in a very good game. It’s always good to test yourselves against good teams from other leagues and it’s left us believing we can go all the way again.” Two-goal marksman Ollie Bendall said: “Playing in the final at Almondsbury eight years ago was a memorable experience, despite the defeat, and we’d all love to go there again.” The duo were the first to acknowledge that Rangeworthy had played a full part in an absorbing spectacle, although it looked bleak for the hosts in the opening ten minutes when Lawes embarked on an all-out assault on their goal. Skipper Marcus Street fizzed a first-minute 25-yarder wide of target and right-back Stephen Beazer went even closer with a cracking 30-yard left-foot strike that flew over Rangeworthy’s stand-in shot-stopper Brian Wilson and rattled the post. So, it was of little surprise 40 seconds later when the away side were ahead. Lively left-winger Mark Greenland picked out Bendall on the edge of the six-yard box and the forward evaded challenges by goalkeeper and defender before firing the ball into the net. To their credit, Colin Luff ’s team rallied well and as the half wore on, so Rangeworthy became an increasing threat. Captain Ben Miles and Mark Richings, who was back from a lengthy broken-leg injury absence, both blazed off-target attempts, while Paul Freeman did well under pressure to push away impressive youngster Joe Davies’ back-post header from Richings’ deep corner. With half-time fast approaching, Rangeworthy were back in business. Striker Jake Haynes caused havoc inside the Lawes area with a skilful run before being upended by

Gloucestershire Youth

Portishead’s Osgood is too good for Hutton Simon Parkinson epsport@b-nm.co.uk ALMONDSBURY experienced the ups and downs of football as they turned in an excellent display to beat a strong Lydney Town team 3-0 in the first outing of their League Cup campaign, only to crash at Winterbourne United a few days later in the same competition. After an entertaining first half with Lydney had ended goalless, Rees Prosser opened the scoring early in the second half for the Almonds following good play by James Wesker and Connor Hopwood. Lydney then had a succession of

Rogers both went close to adding to the tally, while at the other end, Broadwalk keeper Ollie Sharp atoned for his intercepted goal-kick by producing a fabulous tip-over from the resulting Saints attempt at his goal. Ashton Boys Under-15s continued their great start to the season with a pulsating 4-2 win over travelling Bitton with two Louis Partington goals and singles by Joe McGonigle and Ashley Ballard. Nevertheless, it took some brave goalkeeping from Jack Marsh and an outstanding midfield display by the energetic Ellis Tremlett to nullify Bitton’s sterling attempts to salvage their place in the competition. Keynsham Town Under-14s, from Division Three, breezed into the last eight of the Plate with a superb attacking display and 12-1 victory away against Division Four pacesetters AEK Boco. There were hat-tricks for Harrison Johnstone and fit-again Harrison Thomas, while Bailey Davis (2), James Gulliford, Dom Robinson, Kieran Williams and Todd Leach all contributed to the scoresheet. The Keynsham defence of skipper Sam Sharp, Gareth Williams, Luke Ratcliffe and Jamie Box were well marshalled by keeper Joe Jackson. Reece Morgan fired five of the goals as Whitchurch Juniors Under-13s

took their fine league form into the Plate competition with a handsome 12-0 success over St Nicholas. Toby Anstey’s hat-trick and Sam Hutton, Finley Roberts, Harry Purday and Wayne Okutu efforts ensured ’Church a comfortable passage. Saints keeper Jayden Hover made four outstanding saves while midfielder Jake Palmer was instrumental in most of their good work. In the league, Zach Feltham was in unstoppable mood as his treble helped catapult Warmley Rangers Colts Under-14s to a 5-1 win over Winterbourne United in the Division Three. Josh Rogers and Reese Lacey also made their mark, while at the back, strong performances from Mballow, Blyth and Whooley helped see Rangers to a welcome maiden three points of the campaign. Brislington Colts Under-12s’ man-of-the-match Lewis Henderson was in fine form too as his team clinched a 6-4 victory over Bradley Stoke in a tight third division tussle. Henderson struck two terrific early goals, while Ashley King and Ben Hawkins also celebrated doubles to see off a Stoke side who kept up the pressure on the excellent Josh Caswell and his defence.

Almonds crash out of cup after defeat by Town LUKE Osgood helped himself to four fabulous goals as Portishead Town Under-15s soared to a 5-1 success against Hutton Juniors. Injuries and withdrawals meant Portishead took to the field with just 11 fit players, but the result never looked in doubt once Sam Cosway headed a goal-kick back where it came from and into the path of Osgood, who finished high into the net for 1-0 after ten minutes. Cosway netted Town’s other goal while Kalan Bartlett-Azad’s man-of-the-match showing helped keep the hosts on the front foot, Will Bennet going close to scoring a sixth for his team with a 20-yard shot against the bar.

JACK Brice hit a hat-trick as Hallen Under-14s stormed into the quarter-finals of the League Cup with a 7-0 win at Yate United. Brice was backed up well by Luke Spokes’ stunning 35-yarder, while Rex Mannings, Billy Saunders and Jacob Dumble all weighed in with goals to ensure a convincing win for the away side. It could have been more too, as Elliot Gardner and Joe Hodson both went close after the break, while Brad Lewis’ superb cross enabled Brice to complete his treble. Richard Yorath celebrated a hat-trick and Mannie Ali (2), Harry Saunders and Gianni Porcaro, with excellent control and a volley from Joel Athay’s cross, all registered as Bitton Under-14s, having led 6-0 at the interval, eventually saw off a valiant second-half effort by Bristol Rovers JSC to come through 7-4 victors. Stoke Lane Under-13s claimed their first victory of the season via a 5-2 victory over in-form Mangotsfield United. Tom Snell scored his first hat-trick for Lane to secure man-of-the-match, his second goal, a side-foot volley after good work by Alex Wells down

the wing, the pick of the bunch. Stoke sailed into a 4-0 lead at the break with strikes also by Wells and Brendan Grimstead before Mangotsfield fought back with two good goals to make it an exciting final ten minutes. Stand-in keeper Harry Goldspink was in fine form for Lane and debutant Will Lacey looked at ease in defence, while at the other end a speedy counter attack enabled Snell to register his third and Lane’s fifth goal to secure a well-earned win. An under-strength St Vallier Under-12s team had goals from Jai Macleod and Lewis Hammond to boost their hopes of progress, but they were unable to compete properly with a Bath City side who swept to a 5-2 win. A first Almondsbury Saints Under-12s hat-trick for Callum Date, to go with fine goals from Harvey Pritchard, Sam Bird and Max Barker, saw them to a comfortable 6-0 away win over Ashton Boys, meaning Saints still haven’t conceded a goal this season. In the Plate, Broadwalk Under-16s eased to a 5-0 victory over St Nicholas thanks to Kevin Pearce’s brace and singles for Matthew Hendrickson, Callum Tyler and Marcus Williams. In a fast-paced game, Russell and

corners before a Hopwood header from another flag-kick doubled the home side’s advantage. Both keepers made good saves after that but Jake Good wrapped up an impressive Almonds win with a 20-yard drive. Four days later, and Almondsbury were on the receiving end of a 4-0 away defeat by Winterbourne, who had Lewis Whyatt (2), Kieran Smith and Reece Buss on target for them. In the league, Zak Gaston’s brace and George Bush’s effort ensured Thornbury Town came away from Tuffley Rovers with a comfortable three points via a 3-0 win. Thornbury followed it up five days later by holding league leaders and hosts Frampton United to a 2-2 draw, James MacDonald and an own goal handing the battling third-placed visitors another precious point.

Hobbs on target twice as Wickwar prevail

EPB-E01-S4

GUTSY Wickwar Wanderers Under-13s had to dig deep on the road to overcome Ashley Down in a nine-goal thriller. Kieran Davis, Matt Sands, Cameron Drew, Cameron Gander and James Cooke were all on target as last season’s under-12s champions made it three wins from their opening four outings. Yet Finlay Hobbs had opened the scoring for Ashley Down with a fiercely-struck shot from 20 yards and they went on to force two own goals from their opponents to take a 3-2 half-time lead. After the restart, Hobbs scored again following excellent work down the right wing from Jack Lucas, but despite some heroic defending from Sam Degg and Khalid Adan, the home side were unable to hold on to their lead as late Wickwar pressure propelled them to a dramatic 5-4 victory. Meanwhile, Stoke Lane Under-13s swept to three more points courtesy of a goalscoring masterclass by Alex Wells, who netted eight of his team’s goals in a 10-3 romp over Thornbury Town. Ben Donne’s brace ensured double figures on the day for rampant Lane against a Thornbury team who played a full part in a cracking spectacle. A rerun of last season’s cup final saw Bishopston United Youth Under-15s clinch a 4-3 away victory over Thornbury Town. TJ Johnson fired a splendid hat-trick and Archie Lock netted the other goal against a Town team who refused to give up. In Division B, Aidan Tovey and

Jonathan Invernezzi scored a brace apiece and Wiktor Prezpiorka, Chinloy Chance and Chris Bretton weighed in with goals as Ingleside Colts eventually saw off a tiring Thornbury Town Colts team, who had led three times, 7-3. Felix Britton, Anthony Cooper and Lewis Ogilvie replied for Thorns. Goals by Noel Dundas, Adam Eastwood and Ben Eastwood saw Icthus to a 3-0 away success over Bishopston United Colts, whose Ben Jarvis, Liban Younis and Edwin Hensley all forced good stops from the Icthus keeper. Sefton Park Scorpions Under-11s produced a fine performance in only their second league outing to see off the strong challenge of Westbury Park Foxes Whites with a 2-1 victory. Finlay Clark grabbed both Sefton goals either side of Eliot Smith equalising for Foxes. Sefton were grateful to Vincent Lumley-Marshall for keeping out several good Westbury efforts while their star performer, Sam Stephens, gave an outstanding display. Callum Chilcot’s four goals and Harry Billiteri’s triple inspired an 11-2 Totterdown away success against Westbury Park Foxes Greens, Jack Evans and Alfie Madden each bagging braces to complete the scoring. Second-half consolation goals for the Foxes came from Josh Jarvis and Ayman Benarous. In the Under-12s Cup, Divine Amaefule struck five times and Nyheam Kefetse and Tino Chipurito were on target too as Ingleside surged to a 7-3 away win over spirited Westbury Park Foxes.

Ashton Boys Wanderers

James McKimm epsport@bepp.co.uk FOUR goals from Jaheim Stewart and a devastating performance by Tom Green helped Ashton Boys overwhelm Shire Colts, who conceded eight times in the final 20 minutes. Travelling Wanderers began brightly with Alfie Preece, then Stewart, firing narrowly wide, before Stewart forced Shire keeper Matt Simpson into a good save with a drilled shot after a neat one-two with Green. Despite the early pressure from Ashton, the Shire defence of Atreya Ramanan, Sam O’Toole and Logan Burns stood firm, and 20 minutes in their side hit the target for the first time. Harry Simpson jinked his way into the box from the right, but his effort from a tight angle was well stopped by Dylan Wellington, who batted it behind. The resulting corner was superbly whipped in by Simpson and, as no defender attacked it, the ball made its way to the back post where it was thumped into the roof of the net from four yards out by Jonathan Radford, giving the home side a 1-0 lead against the run of play. Ashton responded instantly, with Stewart unleashing a vicious shot from the edge of the box a minute later, but keeper Simpson just managed to get fingertips to the effort to divert it on to the bar. Some five minutes after falling behind, Ashton equalised. Stewart won possession on the left and showed great strength to hold off two defenders before sliding it inside to Green, who darted past his man before prodding the ball with his right foot between Simpson and the near post. Two minutes later, the visitors stormed into the lead when Green slipped a beautifully weighted through ball into the path of Preece, who had timed his run between the two defenders perfectly. Preece took the ball calmly around Simpson before coolly tucking it into the unmanned goal. Ashton got the second half underway and within 20 seconds they had doubled their one-goal advantage. Green picked up the loose ball deep inside the Shire half, neatly shifting his feet and dropping his shoulder to beat his man as he came inside on to his right foot before releasing Charlie Sanders with a sublime reverse pass, and the winger simply slotted the ball past Simpson at the near post. Shire then came forward as Radford found Louis Mullen inside the box to the left from a throw-in, and although he managed to turn and get a shot away, Mullen’s effort was tipped wide of the far post by Wellington, just out of the reach of Amir Farooq who was steaming in at the back post. The first ten minutes of the second half looked a much more even affair as both sides offered an attacking threat, but while Green looked dangerous every time he got the ball,

● The Shire Colts defence comes under pressure from an Ashton Boys Shire struggled to break down the Ashton defence of Linden Kirby-Smith, Matthew Pearce and Ethan Wall. However, 11 minutes in, Shire conceded for a fourth goal. As Green chased a long punt upfield from Wellington, keeper Simpson called for the ball and the back-tracking Burns listened and got out of the way of his team-mate. A slight hesitation by Simpson allowed Green to beat him to the ball and, with the net at his mercy, Green was accidently tripped from behind by Burns as the defender tried desperately to chase him down. The referee awarded a penalty, which was dispatched confidently by Preece to make it 4-1. Ashton soon added a fifth goal when Green burst down the left midway through the second half, driving to the by-line beyond two defenders before cutting the ball back for Billy Jack to tuck home from three yards

out, making it a hat-trick of assists for Green. Preece then had two good chances to complete a treble of his own, once when he was found by Green following another superb run from the attacker, a bobble sending his effort looping into Simpson’s arms, and then he just failed to find the target as he attempted to lift Pearce’s through ball past the keeper. As the pressure mounted, the Shire defence completely disintegrated, Stewart making it 6-1 with a follow-up finish after his initial 20-yard shot was well saved by the stranded Simpson. This signalled the opening of the floodgates as Ashton found the net a further five times in the final seven minutes. Stewart struck the seventh, tucking home the rebound after Simpson produced another high-class save to deny Preece, and then the big midfielder completed his hat-trick of rebounds, following in

the show for Ashton

Haberfield has a field day for Mangotsfield MANGOTSFIELD Under-11s cruised into the next round of the League Cup with a convincing 8-1 win over Whitchurch. Joseph Calloway and man-of-the-match Sam Haberfield both notched two apiece and Sam Barney, Owen Riddler and Sol Thomas all joined them on the scoresheet. Archie Dark scored one and created three as Bristol Rovers JSC Under-11s continued their quest for a third consecutive final triumph with a 6-1 victory over Whitchurch Colts. ’Church had snatched the lead before goals from Elijah Hayden (2), Scott O’Brien, Dark, Liam McCracken and Keane Ashwood sealed a comfortable victory. Owen Lingard contributed too with a perfect cross to tee-up O’Brien for his headed goal. Deerswood Abbotonians Under-11s hosted AEK Boco in an entertaining second round encounter that went right to the wire. Kieran Williams put Deerswood ahead in the first half, only for Boco to equalise after the break. Good goalkeeping at both ends kept it at 1-1, sending the tie into extra-time. With neither side able to make a breakthrough in the additional minutes the contest went to penalties, and although Ben Darke netted from the spot for the home side, Boco scored twice to edge the tie 2-1 and make it through to the next stage. Highridge United Under-10s eased their way into the last eight of the C/D competition with a 5-1 away

victory over Mangotsfield United thanks to Santino Reid’s hat-trick and Jarvis Hill and Joshua Jenkins strikes. The sides had been embroiled in a sparkling 3-3 stalemate in the league in the week but spurred on by excellent performances from Harvey Browning and Jenkins, the Ridge proved too strong for their opponents on the cup stage. Warmley Rangers Under-10s stretched their unbeaten start to the season to five games with an emphatic 13-2 victory over Stoke Lane Lions to progress to the quarter-finals. They took the first match 10-1 with man-of-the-match Kai Johnson scoring six goals and producing a powerful performance all round. Captain Will Brimblecombe helped himself to an excellent hat-trick, James Northall was outstanding at the back and Ben Emery deservedly added his name on the scoresheet. In a closer second encounter, Rangers prevailed 3-1 with Kian Franco, Alex Garland and Tom Williams their marksmen. Keeper Ethan Clay produced some excellent saves and Owen Cox, Joel Oswin and Lewis Parfitt formed a reliable back line. Elsewhere, Thornbury Town Under-10s’ interest in the cup ended with a 7-1 home defeat by Longwell Green, George Baker scoring their second-game consolation in a 2-1 defeat in which the calm Theo Stowell, Kieran O’Brien, Ashton Jeanes and Thor ns’ man-of-the-match keeper Henry Thomas stood out in a much tighter tussle following a 5-0 opening-match loss.

after Sanders almost squeezed the ball past Simpson to make it 8-1. Fletcher made it 9-1 with a cool finish three minutes from time before he then turned provider, finding Green from the right who took Ashton to double figures after Simpson stopped his initial effort with a brilliant save. Fifteen seconds later, Green flicked Harry Lewis’ whipped cross beyond the onrushing Simpson into the path of Stewart, who simply rolled the ball into the empty net to make it 11-1. And it was almost 12-1 right at the death but Green’s 20-yard attempt, which had Simpson beaten all ends up, thumped the crossbar and dropped just the wrong side of the goal.

Hannah hits double figures as Bristol Ladies overwhelm plucky Saints outfit to last year’s champions Melksham Town full of confidence following good recent performances, and that was fuelled further as Sarah Saunders’ cross was slotted home by Sophie Allen to give the visitors a deserved half-time lead. Ellie Bidgood and Syd Marshall were solid at the heart of the Brislington defence, while Leah Perrott and Lois Townsend worked tirelessly

Simon Parkinson juniorleague@bepp.co.uk PROLIFIC scorer Hannah Price took her scoring record to another level with ten well-taken goals for Bristol Ladies Union Under-13s against a newly-formed Downend Saints team. Mayca Jefferis-Cuenca chipped in with five of her own and Jessica Fry (2), Madison Price (2), Poppy Yeo and Olivia Burton added further goals between them as Union rattled up a 21-1 victory. Hard-running duo Sophie Price and Olivia Burton were involved in all of the goals while Ellie Haines and Abigail Price linked well with the BLU forwards from midfield. Meanwhile, Bristol Ladies Union Yellow Under-12s emerged victorious, too, following a thrilling 4-3 derby victory over Bristol Ladies Union Red. Catherine Andrews’ beauty into the top right corner, and Phoebe Neville’s perfect penalty, put Yellows 2-0 up before a quick breakaway and powerful Alice Russell strike hauled Reds back into it. However, Yellows were soon back in control and seemingly out of sight in the second half as Holly Neville broke from nowhere to drive the ball hard and low into the net, and it was Neville again who struck a screamer following some accurate passing to make it 4-1. The Reds would not lie down, though, and fine efforts by Russell and Olivia Cole gave them hope at 4-3 while Finnola McGrath (Reds) and Zoe Toye (Yellows) had good attempts at either end before time was called on a scintillating encounter. Bradley Stoke Under-11s had to claw their back from the concession of an early goal as they emerged 3-1 away victors over a competitive Longwell Green Blue side. Stoke were back on level terms on

Chelsea Hill and Chelsie Brain produced terrific displays for Nailsea United Under-15s as they kept up their 100 per cent winning start to the season and remained top of the table with a battling 2-0 victory over Longwell Green, thanks to goals by Imo Fisher and Ellie Bray before the break. Brislington Under-16s travelled

in their attempt to find a way of extending their lead. But it was Melksham who came away victorious as two second-half goals earned them a 2-1 win. Millie Lacey scored twice as AEK Boco White Under-10s overcame gallant Avon Athletic 6-1, skipper Mia Brain and Georgia Allen also on target, while Boco’s cause was helped by two own goals. Alex Titcomb, Ellie Staples, Olivia Owen, Trixie Willis and Lucy Withey all played their part well in an entertaining and competitive contest. There were goals galore as Bristol Ladies Union Red Under-10s overwhelmed spirited AEK Boco Blue 19-0 with captain Martha Haines bagging eight of the goals, Emilia Smith four of them and Sammy Ogilvie (3), Maddie Rupprecht (2) and Flo Denbow (2) notching the rest. Excellent midfield work from Tilly Jones, solid defensive play by Zoe Gibbs and a competent display from keeper Brooke Mallinson ensured a clean sheet for the emphatic winners.
