Simon Parkinson epsport@bepp.co.uk SUPER-SUB Shane Budding fired Rockleaze Rangers to their first Gloucestershire County League victory of the campaign, aided by a battling performance from his team-mates. After the sides had entered the interval at a cool and damp Coombe Dingle in a goalless deadlock, the 27-year-old postman, introduced to the fray eight minutes into the second period, provided the spark to finally end Rangers’ winless league streak. In a competitive and enjoyable contest, lacking clear-cut opportunities and a killer instinct, Budding showed genuine class by seizing on a defensive mistake 14 minutes from time before calmly finishing for the game’s only goal. Rockleaze did have to weather an anxious final few minutes before celebrating the three points, much to the relief of manager Dave Johnson, a close-season replacement for the watching Carmelo Micciche, who said: “That was a good 90-minute performance by the boys and it’s been coming; we’ve shown in fits and bursts that we’re capable of that without finding the consistency. “It was Shane’s first game back after a stomach injury he picked up

at the end of last season, and he was massive for us. As a team, we know we have what it takes to compete strongly again this season.” Rangers weren’t helped by the fact key midfielder Nathan Bryer was unavailable through work commitments, but they demonstrated plenty of heart in and around the engine room. Ed Freeman, in particular, was often a threat, getting in two early strikes, which were saved by George Hale and hacked off the line by experienced defender Paul Dempsey, respectively. At the other end, Sodbury, their assistant boss Richard Bisp at the helm in the absence of manager Scott Gibson, were irked that referee Brian Lee opted not to award them a penalty when left winger Kyle Ford sprinted on to a raking crossfield pass by Mike England and cut inside his man, before appearing to be tripped inside the area by Rangers right-back Ben Lear as he shaped to shoot. Penalty appeals fell on deaf ears, too, at the other end, as burly forward Oshane West, returning from a long injury lay-off, powered
through several Sodbury challenges before being brought to ground. The ball ran loose to Iggy Garcia, who thrashed his shot well wide of the target. Rockleaze had ridden their luck in the fledgling stages, when centre-back Savas Frangoullis inadvertently headed a Sodbury cross straight into his surprised goalkeeper’s clutches, but they were certainly unfortunate not to snatch a 32nd-minute lead. Freeman, who moments earlier had nodded a Rich Bray corner only just over the top, motored through a gap in midfield and as the ball arrived at the feet of West on the edge of the penalty area, the marksman drilled a fierce angled attempt a fraction over the angle of far upright and bar. With Budding an early second-half introduction for West for Rockleaze, and Luke Maby joining the fray for Sodbury as a replacement for right-back Reese, the second half took time to warm up, although it remained an absorbing affair. Budding had already shaved the crossbar with a header from a corner, a stern warning as to what was to follow because on the hour mark he sent a magnificent dipping free-kick around the visitors’ wall from 25 yards out, which crashed against the base of the same post.
Picture: Artur Lesniak
He was getting closer and 14 minutes from the end he got his reward. Freeman, who had just smashed a rising 30-yard thunderbolt whistling a fraction above the bar, had tried to pick the nippy forward out with a pass, which was initially intercepted by Sodbury skipper Lloyd Harding. However, as the defender tried to come away with the ball, he was robbed by his alert opponent, who sped unopposed towards goal and coolly evaded the advancing Hale, before finding an inviting net with a simple finish. Rockleaze lived on their nerves a little in the closing stages, although their goalkeeper Burgess, who had produced a magnificent diving save to prevent Alex Fox’s searing strike flying past him, was largely untroubled. One late alarm did have Rangers’ hearts in mouths when Fox’s header from Dan Bendall’s cross dropped narrowly adrift of the post, but they managed to cling on to the slender advantage, to their evident delight on the final whistle. Rockleaze Rangers: Sam Burgess; Ben Lear, Savas Frangoullis, Aaron Day, Rob Kellaway; Iggy Garcia, Sam Andrews, Ed Freeman, Rich Bray (Theo Coombs, 72; Frank Stallard, Oshane West (Shane Budding, 53). Not used: Neil Simons. Chipping Sodbury Tn: George Hale; Karl Reese (Luke Maby, 55), Lloyd Harding, Paul Dempsey, Alex Cumming; Mark Totterdell, Mike England, Alex Fox, Ollie Clarke; Kyle Ford; Dan Bendall. McCracken hits a cracker to secure victory for Rovers in injury time

Sillitoe’s perfect hat-trick wins it for Longwell Simon Parkinson epsport@b-nm.co.uk
● An AEK Boco Under-9s player, left, puts in a cross during the Hanham Minor League clash against Ashton Boys Simon Parkinson epsport@b-nm.co.uk LIAM McCracken celebrated a dramatic injury-time winner as Bristol Rovers Under-11s began the new nine-a-side campaign in Division A with a 5-4 victory against a hard-working Keynsham Town team who had stolen a 2-0 first-half lead. Rovers started the second period a different side and man-of-the-match Miguel Freckleton scored with a header shortly after Bradley Webb had netted from close range. With Rovers now well on top, Lewis Bryan then struck before Freckleton grabbed his second to put the hosts 4-2 in the ascendancy, only for gallant Keynsham to score two quick goals to tie-up a scintillating contest at 4-4. Rovers weren’t to be denied and with time running out, Freckleton’s shot wasn’t held by the Town keeper and a jubilant McCracken reacted quickest to fire the winner from close range. Sam Barney hit a hat-trick to cap a lively personal showing as Mangotsfield United Under-11s made a great start to the top-division season with a 4-0 victory over Whitchurch Sports. Joe Calloway weighed in with a goal as well, while the excellent Sam Haberfield was crowned Field’s man-of-the-match. A real end-to-end cracker produced three great goals to start the Division
● Tough tackling in the game between AEK Boco and Ashton Boys B season as Stoke Lane overcame Deerswood 2-1 on the road. Deerswood began brightly and went 1-0 up through a great strike. But the Lane equalised straight from the restart with unstoppable shot from outside the area by Tom Isaac. Ryan Jones, causing havoc on the left side of midfield, then put Stoke 2-1 up with a low strike which gave the
home keeper no chance. Lewis Evans would have made it 3-1 too, but for a contender for save of the season by the Deerswood keeper late in the first half. Mackenzie Welsh between the Stoke sticks also did well to help see his side to three points. Meanwhile, newly-promoted Thornbury Town Under-10s experienced a tough start to their B-Di-
Picture: Jo Wakenshaw vision campaign in going down 5-3 at home to Downend Saints. Both sides had good periods of possession and chances to score in a lively opening game, which was only decided near the end when a fine solo run and shot by Charlie Moss handed Thorns a slender advantage. George Rowen had needed to produce some strong saves, though, while man-of-the-match Joni Gadish enjoyed his best game in a Thornbury shirt with some eye-catching runs. Town began the second meeting with four rapid half-chances, but it was Downend who took control by scoring three quick goals. Thornbury soon struck back though through an own goal and when George Baker was fouled inside the box, he got up to calmly net with the resultant penalty. Peter Gregory was industrious in Thor nbury’s defence and Theo Stowell made a pleasing impression on debut, but Saints went on to score twice more to take the contest 5-2. After winning the D Division championship last term Highridge United Under-10s settled into life in the C section well as a spirited fightback from two goals down led to them overcoming Yate United 10-2. Men-of-the-match performances from George Cobern and Santino Reid helped fuel the recovery while Josh Jenkins and Reid both smashed four-timers and Sean Bonks-Davis and Corey Weyman-Beard weighed in with goals.

SHARP-SHOOTER Amy Sillitoe was in unstoppable form as Longwell Green Under-15s made a magnificent start to the new season with a 5-0 victory over Ashton Girls. Sillitoe fired Longwell in front early on before going on to complete a ‘perfect’ hat-trick with two more goals. Louise O’Hare added to Ashton’s misery by smashing a left-footed shot into the top corner of the net. Longwell began the second half with real purpose, midfielders Abbie Woodley-Marshall, Chloe Fuller, Becki Sullivan and Jordan Putterill covering lots of ground, while Anisa House had a great game in goal. Evie Dorringon, Courtney Long, Lois Moon and Reanna Nutland were excellent in defence to help keep Ashton at bay, while Sillitoe pounced again to bring her haul to four goals. Brislington produced a solid performance on home territory to see off a stern challenge from a strong Bristol Ladies Union side with a 3-0 success in the Under-16s division. The only thing separating the sides at half-time was when a long ball into the box from Charlie Osborne alllowed Harriet Gillard to react first and put the hosts in front. Bristol Ladies began the second half in the same purposeful manner, with Meg Souness and Molly Steedman working hard to get their team back in the game. However, their comeback hopes were dashed when a deflected long shot from Mia Williams doubled Brislington’s advantage, before Williams turned provider for Lois Townsend to round off a determined home display with a third goal. Reenie Lodge hit a hat-trick as last season’s Under-10s title winners AEK Boco Blue began their under-11s assault with a terrific 9-0 win over Downend Saints. Grace Foote,Veronica Cummins, Tishauna Keeping-Graham, Chloe White, Bryony Higgs, Alice Skinner (penalty) and Lodge (3) all joined the goal-rush in a super team performance, while Charlie Sutton also enjoyed an excellent outing. Bradley Stoke Girls Under-11s saw off a well-organised Wotton Rovers side 3-1 in a high-tempo tussle. Wotton went ahead early on courtesy of a defensive error, but it took Stoke just three minutes to level as a long Millie Eveleigh throw allowed Olivia Hood to run into the box and smash home from close range. Stoke were grateful to Paige Fowler’s composure and interceptions at the back on numerous occasions, laying the platform for her team to snatch the lead in the second half as a low cross from Maddie Hilbert was turned home by captain Daisy Acker man. Stoke added a third three minutes from time with a lovely solo effort from Ackerman, who beat two defenders before scoring low into the bottom corner. League newcomers Wotton did have a late chance which was coolly dealt with by Annabelle Thomas in the home goal.

James McKimm epsport@bepp.co.uk TWO goals from Louis Britton and a disallowed effort right at the death made for an interesting opening-day encounter that went right down to the wire, with AEK Boco hanging on for all three points as they won 2-1. After kicking off, and with less than two minutes of the new season played, Boco found themselves a goal to the good. Louis Britton made a darting run towards the front post where he met Jake Cleverley’s whipped inswinging corner with the sweetest of volleys, his right boot sending the ball flying over the head of Downend keeper George Richards and into the back of the net. Boco almost doubled their lead six minutes later when Cleverley again swung in a dangerous cross, this time from the left, and although he failed to connect properly with the ball, team-mate Charlie Evans managed to poke it past Richards. However, he was denied not once, but twice, by Dylan Evans, who first poked the ball off the line before jumping back to his feet to deny the Boco man a second time from just a couple of yards out with a superb, brave block. Downend’s first sight of goal came in the eleventh minute when a scuffed goal-kick saw the ball fall kindly for striker Cato Dacres on the edge of the box but, although he managed to lift the ball up over the stranded Vince Barber, his effort dropped just wide.
2 ● The number of minutes on the clock when Louis Britton opened the scoring for AEK Boco Eight minutes later, the visitors had an even better chance to level the score when Charlie Perret did extremely well to hold off a challenge from Ethan Thomas and find Dacres from the right. Dacres could have shot himself but instead unselfishly drew the only remaining defender towards him before squaring the ball to Nicky Shine. However, ten yards out and in the middle of the goal, Shine dallied just a little too long on the ball which allowed Barber to charge out and block Shine’s rushed effort with his legs, denying Downend what should have been a certain equaliser. Downend were starting to get on top and, with eight minutes to go in the half, they deservedly pulled level. Perret received the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the Boco box and, with little else on, he majestically rolled his marker before firing the ball low across goal, beyond the sprawling Barber and into the far cor ner. Downend could then have taken the
● A Downend Saints player, left, puts his foot in as he challenges an AEK lead not long after when George Weston whipped in a superb free-kick from the right with his left foot, but none of his teammates attacked the ball and, much to Boco’s relief, it bounced just wide of the far post after flashing across the face of goal. At the other end, Boco came even closer with a dead ball effort. From 25 yards out to the right of the goal Britton got the ball up and over the wall and, with Richards beaten, it looked a certain goal, but the ball didn’t quite dip enough and the superb strike thundered into the crossbar before bouncing away. Boco had started brightly, however as the half progressed Downend grew into the game as Jake Millward and captain Aidan Sanfelice started to take control of the midfield and the visitors, who enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and territory, looked
the more threatening team by the half-time whistle. Boco started the second half well with Zac Cheetham firing over from inside the box after being found by Britton, before the same player latched onto a poor defensive clearance but could only volley over from 12 yards out. These were the only sights of goal for either side in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as the game turned scrappy, with neither side able to retain possession for long enough to carve the opposition open. The defences were definitely on top at this stage with Ewan McMillan, Evans, Weston and, in particular, Samuel Lacey looking solid at the back for Downend, while Thomas, Charlie Richards, Dan Jordan and Jack Holbrook were doing an equally

Five-goal salvo gives Phones all three points BRISTOL Telephones got their Bristol South campaign off to a flier with a 7-2 success against Cadbury Heath. Billy Jones had been Telephones’ only first-half marksman with a penalty as the sides turned around at the interval locked at 1-1. But a sudden five-goal flurry inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half changed everything and set the home team firmly on their way. Debutants George Pool, James Ford, Tom Martin and Joe Osbourne all hit the target, with Mickey Parsons and Scott Harvey completing the ’Phones scoring. Brandon Pike and Sam Ford scored the visitors’ consolation goals. Old Cothamians ran out 6-3 winners over Longwell Green thanks to a three-goal scoring spree in the final few minutes. Josh Uhlyk helped the hosts on their way with a hat-trick, while Keanan Mitchard, Wes Rogers and Scott Laity were also on target. Tom Bishton, Ben Adams and Adam Thurston strikes ensured Longwell were always in with a fighting chance. Meanwhile, Cribbs FC paid the price for a lacklustre and disjointed performance with a surprise 3-1 Bristol North defeat away against Thor nbury Town. In an even first half, Cribbs fielding four debutants, took the lead through Tamas Elias, who was on hand to round off a smart passing move involving most of his midfield.
Elias then had a second smart finish unluckily disallowed for offside, while at the other end good defending by Matt Baker and Dan Bishop kept the score at 1-0. In the second half, Town fortuitously drew level when a back pass bobbled over the foot of Cribbs keeper Rory Smith and left an empty net for Mike Topp to tap in for Thornbury. That signalled a change in momentum as Town continued to press forward and they deservedly took the

And the hosts extended their advantage as another attempted back-pass was intercepted by Topp, who again finished well to put daylight between the teams. Stoke Lane’s new under-18 squad gave it their best shot but they were well beaten in the end by a Kingswood side who swept to a 4-0 victory with goals by Edd Pitt, Archie Bennett, Connor Davis and Matt Gosling, helped by a fine display at right-back by man-of-the-match James Gilvear.

Boco opponent in the Avon Youth League Division One game that ended 2-1 to AEK Boco when the referee deemed that Cheetham was brought down by McMillan after the striker had latched onto Britton’s header inside the Downend box. With the pressure on, Britton stepped up to take the spot-kick and calmly stroked the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal, past Richards who remained rooted to the spot. The goal doubled Britton’s personal tally and left the visitors with less than ten minutes to equalise for a second time. With just two minutes to go Downend’s Shine burst down the right wing before threading the ball into the path of Dacres but, from just eight yards out, the striker failed to prod the ball past Barber who blocked it with his legs, much to the home side’s relief. Then controversy struck two
minutes later when, following a Downend corner, the referee blew for full time just as the ball was delivered back into the Boco box, where it was headed into the goal by a Downend player. The whistle clearly went as the ball was in the air, but that did nothing to dampen the anger and frustration felt by the Downend players and supporters. Overall a draw would probably have been a fair result for two evenly-matched teams, but Downend were left to rue a number of missed opportunities. AEK Boco: Vince Barber, Charlie Passco, Charlie Richards, Dan Jordan, Ethan Thomas, Billy Hensler, Louis Howard, Louis Britton, Jake Cleverley, Jack Holbrook, Ellis Kow, Mason Hawkins, Charlie Evans, Zac Cheetham. Downend Saints: George Richards, Daniel Adamson, Samuel Lacey, Ewan McMillan, Dylan Evans, Dan Harrison, Aidan Sanfelice, Jake Millward, Nicky Shine, Charlie Perret, Cato Dacres, Alfie Hargreaves, George Weston.
However, 15 minutes into the second half man-of-the-match Alex Twiggs’ corner was confidently headed home by Cosway for his second. Winscombe hit back by scoring direct from a corner before Osgood chased a great ball from Ash Leathem at the other end to finish well into the bottom corner for Town’s fourth. Portishead were caught out again by a long, direct ball near the end, as Winscombe reduced the arrears again, but solid defending and keeping by Will Bennet, James Robinson, Oscar Todd, Joe Rout, Kalan Bartlett-Azad and Callum Jones saw them safely over the line.

good job at the back for Boco. After the lull, Downend then had two good chances in quick succession. The first came 16 minutes in when Perret read McMillan’s header over the Boco defence and, charging through, managed to beat the advancing Barber to the ball but, at close quarters, the Downend goalscorer could only find the brave keeper’s bread basket and Barber managed to hang onto the ball. Two minutes later, Perret was released in behind again, but this time, with Jordan on his shoulder, the striker hesitated in pulling the trigger, allowing Barber to dart out and smother the ball at his feet. The game seemed destined to be a draw with neither side looking particularly threatening but, with 25 minutes on the clock, Boco were presented with a golden opportunity

PORTISHEAD Town Juniors Under-15s kicked off the new first division season in fine style as four new recruits helped them to a 4-2 home victory over a robust Winscombe team. Sam Cosway, one such debutant, fastened on to a cross by fellow new-boy Janzen Rosevear to beat the keeper with a fine finish on 15 minutes. Luke Osgood and Tyler Ashmead combined on 30 minutes for the latter to net well for the second goal, while another newcomer, Joe Root, almost made it 3-0 when a 25-yard piledriver was pushed around the post by the Winscombe keeper.

Foxes scent blood as Bears succumb to a twelve-goal thriller in opening-day game Eddie McGee juniorleague@bepp.co.uk THE Under-11s league got off to a blistering start with a 12-goal thriller between Westbury Park Foxes Greens and Clifton United Bears. Sam Devane, Ayman Benarous and Josh Jarvis were all among the goals for Foxes, while Art Ricesara, Oliver Southwell and Aineias Arango restored some second-period pride for the Bears as their opponents ran out thrilling 8-4 victors. Diego Lovatt Garcia, Jude Bounds and Charlie Bead-Gayler were all on target for Ashley Down in their 3-1 win over Westbury Park Foxes Whites. Westbury Park Foxes and Felton drew 3-3 in an enthralling opening Under-12 Division meeting. Felton took the lead, but within a minute Rohan Schroeder levelled for Foxes with a great strike. Henry Sweet’s powerful penalty handed Westbury a 2-1 advantage, only for Felton to equalise soon after. Schroeder then got his second of the match with a dipping free-kick before Felton tied-up a topsy-turvy match for the second and final time to give each team a fair and well-earned point. In the Under-13s section, Wickwar Wanderers saw off Shirehampton with a comprehensive 7-0 victory. Four goals from Kieran Davis contributed handsomely to the win together with Cameron Drew’s double and a Matt Sands effort. Elsewhere in the division, Westbury Park Foxes overcame a competitive Ashley Down outfit 3-1 with two goals from their star performer Omar Rauf and a long-range Nick Blatchford follow-up strike, after Ashley keeper Mario Lovatt-Garcia had brilliantly saved a penalty. Theo Bounds scored a deserved consolation goal for the Down. Thornbury Town Under-13s kicked off their season in style with a 10-2 victory on the road against Lock-

Tom Donaldson opened the scoring in the first minute, setting the tone for a dominant Town display, and constant pressure by Joseph Bennett, James Madley and Dominic Ball brought about a second as Jacob Budd took full advantage of a misplaced goal-kick. Man-of-the-match Alex King bagged a brace, Donaldson and Budd went on to complete hat-tricks, Michael Brown struck home from the penalty spot and Joe Mullen, who showed nifty footwork throughout, was rewarded with a well-taken goal. While Louie Wanless hit a post, debutant Archie Page supported the
Thorns midfield well and Olly Campo-Miranda and Peter McDonald helped guard Ben Rodriguez’s goal capably. Thornbury Town A started their Under-15 A-league programme with a slick 7-0 success over Tytherington Rocks, courtesy of Reece Chambers’ super triple, Ollie Chapple and Luke Garrett efforts and Ash Ritcher’s two blistering strikes. Chris Cole’s outstanding defending earned him man-of-the-match. The Fountains Trophies Under-15s Senior Cup began with a bang with 27 goals scored in only three games. Two goals from birthday-boy
James Noakes, and one by Rob Grant, added to a fine hat-trick for debutant Hamza Khandker as Golden Hill Sonics saw off Bishopston United Colts 6-1. Good pressure by Bishopston’s Aiden Slattery forced an own goal from Sonics in a crowd-pleasing game played in a good spirit. It was precisely the same outcome as Icthus overcame St Andrews 6-1 thanks to doubles from Henry Clothier and Andrew Peterson plus Liam Pate and Jack Milton efforts. Trailing 5-0 at half-time Saints recovered well after the interval with constructive midfield play from
Patrick Garrett and William Stanley creating shooting efforts for Matthew Howell and Eddie Bounds, who’d had a first-half penalty saved. Saints did convert their second penalty which was tucked away neatly by Stanley for their consolation goal. In the other fixture, a double hat-trick from Sam Poulter helped secure a comfortable 13-0 win for Gordano Valley Gaints over Thornbury Colts. A dominant performance in midfield by Stefan Ireland gave Gordano a stranglehold on the game while Cosway, Azad and Clay were also among the goals.
