Simon Parkinson epsport@b-nm.co.uk MARK Liddell’s brilliant late header enabled Mendip United to prise top spot away from arch-rivals Longwell Green Reserves in an enthralling Premier Division encounter at Shellards Road. A predictably tight game had looked set to end in goalless stalemate until five minutes from time, when the central midfielder got on the end of a free-kick to steer a bullet-like header into the net for a dramatic winner. The defeat left previous pacesetters Longwell Green licking their wounds, not least because they had missed a first-half penalty and several more chances. Mendip, the 2010-11 and 2011-12 champions, had entered Saturday’s showdown still smarting from a 5-0 home thumping, meted out to them by their opponents in the penultimate game of last season, when Longwell regained the title they had last won in 2010. Delighted Mendip boss Richard O’Connor said: “We felt we owed ...............................................................

Longwell Green one for what they did to us back in May, and you could see the determination and desire from our players to try to ensure it didn’t happen this time. “All credit to the boys because we’ve introduced a few new faces to the side and they’re clearly set on winning the title back.” The teams took to the field occupying the top two positions in the Premier Division and leaders Longwell appeared in no mood to give up their lofty status in the early stages. Mark Ashley curled a decent seventh-minute free-kick attempt around the wall and a fraction past the angle of bar and post, before the same forward raced into the Mendip penalty area and struck a low shot on the slide straight at goalkeeper James Burnham. The visitors’ first meaningful effort came on 12 minutes, when centre-half Jon Mead ballooned a 25-yard free-kick, and Longwell were soon indebted to stand-in goalkeeper Mark Summers, an experienced first-team centre-back by
● Mendip United’s Andy Talbot tries to evade a tackle from a Longwell Green opponent trade, for denying Mendip marksman Dean Maggs twice in quick succession. Sean Caines came on for Mendip as a 28th-minute replacement for injured left-back Andy Talbot. Longwell, without truly dominating the contest, continued to pose a threat, and Dave Parnell wasn’t far away from breaking the deadlock with a scissors kick, which clipped the edge of the near post. Yet, eight minutes before the break, it looked odds-on that O’Connor’s battlers would fall behind. Referee Adrian Forrester pointed to the penalty spot after Longwell midfielder Matt Jackson was held back by Liddell, as the ball was pumped into the area. However, Ashley’s accurate low penalty towards the bottom corner lacked power and Burnham did well to leap to his left to make the save. There was little to choose between the teams at the start of the second half, too. Longwell again had the better of the early attacks. Parnell, under pressure from defenders as Ashley’s sweeping cross from the right
teed him up, prodded a tame finish straight at Burnham, while Parnell cracked a volley only just over the bar after Ashley again had turned the ball into his path following a flowing Longwell move. Burnham then did well to get in the way of Lawrence Perkins’ effort as the Longwell midfielder raced into the box, and the goalkeeper’s opposite number, Summers, was well-positioned to get fully behind a thudding long-range drive from Mendip striker Jamie Godfrey. With time running out, Longwell were grateful once more to Summers for producing an expert save with his legs as United winger Tom Milkins attempted to turn home a loose ball from inside the penalty area. Mendip were not to be denied and, five minutes from time, they delivered a spectacular knockout punch. Right-back Lee Hancock launched a long free-kick into the Longwell box and a determined Liddell attacked the ball with real purpose, sending his header flying beyond the despairing clutches of Summers and into the far corner of the net.

With several minutes of stoppage time adding to the tension, there was still time for Maggs to race on to a Godfrey pass and narrowly miss the target with a fierce strike. At the other end, Jackson went close to levelling it up for Longwell with a back-post header, albeit under close attention from defenders. A frustrating afternoon, then, for Longwell manager Julian Harmer, assistant Andy Britton and their backroom staff. Harmer said: “We were ‘done’ by a brilliant header, but you could see how much Mendip wanted it. “For years we’ve been the top two teams, but I can see the likes of Highridge, Totterdown and Lebeq challenging strongly this time; it’s not likely to be a two-horse race.” Longwell Green Reserves: Mark Summers; Craig Madine, Wayne Roberts, Chris Dauncey, Dan Stephens; Sean Finnegan (Mike Stephens, 80), Lawrence Perkins, Matt Jackson, Dan Tanner; Dave Parnell, Mark Ashley (Jon McAlindon, 64). Mendip United: James Burnham; Lee Hancock, Ben Garland, Jon Mead, Andy Talbot (Sean Caines, 28; Gary Hancock 49); Craig Liddell, Wes Hawkins, Mark Liddell, Tom Milkins; Jamie Godfrey, Dean Maggs. Referee: Adrian Forrester.

Union girls hit double figures as they coast to victory over Green
● A Longwell Green Under-15s player, centre, bursts through to score in her side’s 5-0 victory over Fry Club Girls Simon Parkinson epsport@b-nm.co.uk BRISTOL Ladies Union Under-13s sounded a warning that they mean business this season as they overcame Longwell Green 10-0 in their opening fixture. Outstanding performances from Olivia Burton and Sophie Price, in midfield alongside Madison Price and Jessica Fry, ensured Union were always on the front foot. The unrelenting movement of Hannah Price and Mayca Jefferis-Cuenca up front meant BLU were a constant threat on the break, while Poppy Yeo and Chloe Smith in defence, and reliable keeper Ruby Mossford behind them, restricted Longwell Green’s attackers to only one on-target attempt. Ali Phillips, Kiera Serrell, Shelby Lacey, Lydia Britt and Georgia Penny, with a real screamer from outside the box, all registered as AEK Boco Under-15s cruised to a 14-0 victory against a battling Bradley Stoke side whose goalkeeper produced some fine saves. Longwell Green Under-15s’ magnificent start to the season continued unabated as they saw off the stern challenge of Fry Club Girls with a 5-0
victory. Amy Sillitoe continued her outstanding form by adding two more goals to her collection, while the hard-work Chloe Fuller also netted twice and Abbie Woodley-Marshall rounded off a determined home display with the fifth. Credit to the Fry’s keeper too who made some terrific saves to keep the Green scoring down. Nailsea United Girls Under-15s maintained their perfect start to the season with a comfortable 12-1 victory over Ashton Girls. Nailsea played good football throughout against battling opponents with Imogen Fisher (4), Ellie Bray (3) and Lauren Malone (3) in unstoppable form and Chelsea Hill and Sarah Page hitting the target too to add to Ashton’s woes. A Maddie Hilbert hat-trick helped Bradley Stoke Under-11s maintain their perfect start to the campaign with an 8-1 success against hosts Cadbury Heath. A brilliant Daisy Ackerman double and further efforts by Olivia Hood, Sophie Molyneuw and Naomi Adams, with a stunning solo effort, ensured for a comfortable away-day, helped by strong performances from the likes of Millie Eveleigh, Emily Hulbert and goalkeeper Annabelle Thomas, who produced a fabulous double save in
the second half. AEK Boco Blue Under-11s proved too strong for club comrades AEK Boco Red as they came away 6-1 victors. Tishauna Keeping-Graham opened the scoring for Blues just 55 seconds in and after hitting a post she soon notched her second on nine minutes following a fine pass by Bryony Higgs. Sub Kiera Sheppard-Cozens, Grace Foote, Keeping-Graham and Chloe White all netted. AEK Boco White Under-10s turned in an outstanding performance to beat Cadbury Heath 8-0. Dominant midfield performances by Georgia Allen, Alex Titcomb and Ellie Staples ensured much of the play was kept in the Heath half, supported by strong defending at the back from Olivia Owen and Lucy Withey. Boco led only 1-0 at the break, courtesy of an own goal, but relentless second-half pressure produced a Lydia Hall hat-trick and further strikes from Mia Brain, Teah Theophilus, Milly Lacey and another own goal. Solid defending by Trixie Willis and Leila Russell helped maintain Boco’s clean sheet. Bristol Ladies Union Red Under-10s, meanwhile, were held to
Picture: Neil Brookman a tense 3-3 draw by Avon Athletic in a lively start to their home programme. Martha Haines’ whipped corner took a deflection off of an Avon player and landed in the net to give them the lead and a second flag-kick by Haines a few minutes later proved a carbon copy of her first one, the ball even going in off the same unfortunate visiting player. Unfazed, Avon piled the pressure on in response and it paid off as two goals ensured the teams headed into the break locked at 2-2. Union were denied on several occasions in the second half by Avon’s excellent keeper and the hosts were dealt a further setback when they conceded a third via a counter-attacking move. But a great shot by Sammy Ogilvie brought BLU level again and secured them a worthy point. Meanwhile, player-of-the-match Olivia Allen did well to clear a shot off the line, while two keepers deployed, Ashleigh Hutson and Molly Silsbury, made fine saves either side of the interval as their AEK Boco Under-12s team were held to a goalless draw by travelling Bristol Ladies Union Yellow in a fair outcome to a competitive contest.

O’Connor and Hathaway win it for United WINTERBOURNE United overcame appalling conditions and their tenacious hosts Cribbs FC to clinch a 4-2 victory in an excellent Bristol North encounter. With their leading scorer Tamas Elias posing plenty of problems for the Winterbourne back line, Cribbs deservedly took the lead when the fourth in a succession of corners was powerfully headed home by Danny Slade. However, with the last kick of the first half, a Winterbourne breakaway was finished off by Nathan Redmore’s sizzling overhead kick from 15 yards. Amid driving rain at the start of the second half, United moved in front when a pass through the middle was expertly slotted into the corner of the net by Corey Hathaway, but the lead lasted less than a minute as straight from the restart a series of slick passes released Ash Maisey on the left and his cross was steered in by Cribbs debutant Kyle Smith. At 2-2 the game could have gone either way, but it was Winterbourne who eventually pulled away with two late long-range Joe O’Connor and Corey Hathaway strikes. A Conner Davis double and powerful Charlie Read strike saw Kingswood overcome Thornbury Town 3-0, while Chris Shine’s hat-trick propelled AEK Boco to an 8-1 romp over Bradley Stoke Youth, Sam Kitson (2), Oliver Amos, Sam Bressington and Ajani Spence their other marksmen. Joe Loney was Stoke’s lone scorer. Jack Thompson and Harry Bradford hit the target for Highridge, but it wasn’t enough to earn them all the spoils as Fry Club Colts equalised eight minutes from time through Ed Ansell in a 2-2 Bristol South draw. Luke Stone’s strike from a corner in the dying seconds of the first half had initially levelled things up at 1-1 for the Colts. Bristol Telephones and Ashton Boys drew a well-contested game 3-3. Telephones started the stronger and were leading 2-0 through goals by Mickey Parson and Joe Goddard. Ashton fought back well and Leon Clark and Jacob Saunders brought them level before a stunning Joe Goddard volley put ’Phones ahead again, only for Jacob Saunders to earn Ashton a share of the points by converting a penalty.

Portishead earn a point at United A LATE equaliser from Sam Cosway ensured Portishead Town Under-15s a hard-fought 1-1 draw away against defending champions Burnham United. For most of the game, Portishead were forced to fight a strong rearguard action to prevent United adding to their early goal. When United were forced to concede a throw-in down the left, Osgood delivered a dangerous ball into the box which was flicked on to the crossbar by Ashmead. Cosway reacted quickest, firing the rebound in for a dramatic late leveller.

Avon Youth League
Ten goals but no victor between Town and Fry
EPB-E01-S5
CHARLIE Preston fired a terrific treble as Portishead Town Juniors Under-13s came away from Fry Club with a fighting point from a pulsating 5-5 draw. Ryan Meacham scored the other two Portishead goals in a first division game that was a great advert for junior football and played in fine spirit. Town’s cause was helped by a superb penalty save by Kieran Noble to deny the Keynsham side just before half-time. Sam Hutton also hit a hat-trick as Whitchurch Juniors Under-13s continued their impressive start to the fourth division campaign with a convincing 9-0 victory over Downend Saints Colts. There were doubles for Wayne Okutu and Toby Anstey. A goal apiece from Reece Morgan and Harry Purday wrapped up the scoring spree. Whitchurch were dominant throughout and created plenty of chances and they would have added to their tally had the Downend keeper and his defence not been in such excellent form. St Vallier Under-12s maintained their splendid opening to the Division One season with a fantastic team performance in a 1-1 draw against Bath City. Saints set out their stall to contain a strong Romans side and got their rewards with a scrambled last-minute equaliser. Almondsbury Sports Under-12s made it two wins out of two with an exciting 5-2 victory over Keynsham Juniors in the second division. Saud Alyaseen’s quickfire brace set the game up for the Almonds with Will Cains halving the deficit for the visitors. Danny Seymour then stepped up a gear with a brace either side of a Max Burge solo effort for the hosts. Cains again netted for Keynsham, but Almondsbury were all but home and dry. Ashley King and man-of-the-match Ben Hawkins both scored superb goals, but they weren’t quite enough to stop their battling Brislington Colts Under-12s team tumbling to a 3-2 away defeat by St Nicholas in Division Three. In Division Four, Mangotsfield Colts Under-12s romped to a comfortable 14-0 away victory over Longwell Green Colts, led by man-of-the-match Jaiden Holver’s five impressive goals in a top-quality display. He was ably supported by Curtis Molton and William Morris, who scored twice each, and goals from George Boyd, Aayush Seegum, Tommy McManus and Jack Smith, not to mention a classy last-minute free-kick netted by Mangos keeper Aidan Connolly. At the other end, fantastic performances by Kieran Becker and Tyler Flemans limited goalscoring chances for gallant Green. New-boy Liam Whitrow bagged a hat-trick as Ashton Colts Under-14s swept to a 6-1 success against Bristol Rovers Juniors in an enthralling second division tussle. Colts opened the scoring when a great team move was finished off by new signing Jack Prescott at the far post.
The second came courtesy of their other new recruit, Whitrow, before Ashton, with Jack Deacon a replacement for centre-back Kyle O’Driscoll in a defensive reshuffle, added two more through man-of-the-match Whitrow. Centre-back Cameron Orr hit the net with a long-range free-kick and debutant Adam Saddiq grabbed Ashton’s final goal before Rovers got the consolation their hard work deserved. Harvey World and Bitton Under-14s demonstrated again they are ones to watch this season following their 6-0 away romp over Yate United. Hot on the heels of the previous week’s heavy 10-2 defeat of Stoke Lane, they continued where they left off with World firing four of the goals and Gianni Porcaro and Will Simpson-Jarman getting the rest. Bitton entered the first division game without a recognised keeper, so Alex Begbie-Dilks filled the breach in the first half and produced a great performance and Simpson-Jarman did likewise after the break to fine effect.

Hallen Under-14s made it three wins in a week thanks to a belated 3-2 away victory over Highridge United. The home team took the lead against the run of play before the lively Rex Mannings was upended outside the box after the break and Sam Hilton curled home Hallen’s equaliser with a fine free-kick. Highridge responded with a good counter attack to make it 2-1, only for Hallen to level up again straight from the restart when Corey Cotterill’s neat pass found star man Elliot Gardner with room to slot home. It was all the visitors after that and Mannings’ skill took him past several defenders before he was upended inside the box and Hilton coolly slotted home Hallen’s late winner from the spot. Shireway Rangers Under-16s notched their first win of the Division II campaign courtesy of a 3-1 victory over a physical Avon Athletic Colts outfit. In poor conditions, Luke Smart’s powerful strike handed Shire the lead and after Avon had equalised with a scrambled effort, they restored their advantage after the break when keeper Joe Wood’s 70-yard punt upfield drifted over his opposite number and into the net. After Avon had seen a man dismissed for an over-zealous tackle on man-of-the-match Smart, Shire confirmed their superiority with a third goal through Rhys Greenaway’s battling finish. Callum Merret, Liam Drew and Luke Mundy all contributed well with their attacking flair.

James McKimm epsport@bepp.co.uk VISITORS Almondsbury maintained their 100 per cent start to the league season with a hard-fought victory over a Mangotsfield side who gave an encouraging performance playing some lovely football. The game started slowly with both teams looking to keep possession, but it was Almondsbury who had the best of the opening stages, Harrison Neill forcing a good save out of Kieran Bees before Fin Coombs fired wide from the edge of the box after stealing the ball off a Mangotsfield defender, both within the opening ten minutes. Coombs then managed to find the target on the ten-minute mark after Harvey Pritchard collected the ball from a deep Ellis Richards corner and set the ball back to Coombs, however, this time the attacker’s shot from the 18-yard line was straight at the goalkeeper. Thirty seconds later, Mangotsfield finally had their first effort of the game when Luke Bailey won the ball in midfield and found Aaron Jones 25 yards from goal, but the midfielder’s long-range effort flew just wide of the top corner. Almondsbury’s Sam Bird also warmed Bees’ gloves before an air-shot from an attempted clearance left Coombs running clean through on the Mangotsfield goal. But, as he entered the penalty box, Bees came flying out and managed to tip Coombs’ curling effort wide, denying the striker with a brilliant save. Three minutes before the break, what should have been an easy ball to defend was allowed to find its way to Mangotsfield’s Luca Wilson after two Almondsbury defenders got in each other’s way trying to clear it. However, the big striker couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity as he turned and fired narrowly wide from 20 yards out. Despite an even share of possession and some lovely football being played by both sides, it was Almondsbury who went in at half time looking the more likely to break the deadlock as they not only defended solidly through Max Barker, Marshal Bamford and Neill, but also caused the Mangotsfield defence problems, with Bees bailing his side out a couple of times with good saves, while his opposite number Charlie Smith was yet to be tested. Like the first half, the second half was eight minutes old before the first chance arrived, but after bringing down another deep corner from Richards at the back post, Ben Lloyd’s near-post effort was well blocked Ryan Evans. Soon after, Mangotsfield managed their first effort of the match on target after Jones drove forward form the halfway line before unleashing a shot from ten yards outside the box. However, the powerful strike was comfortably held by Smith. The home side then had another chance to snatch the lead a few minutes later when the referee played a good advantage, allowing Bailey
● A Mangotsfield defender goes to ground to stop an Almondsbury attack Sloper to latch on to Evans’ through ball, however from ten yards out to the left of the goal the striker tried to squeeze the ball between Smith and his near post, but instead slotted it wide. Halfway through the second half, Almondsbury put together a lovely move as Archie Parry flicked the ball down the left wing to Richards, who aimed a lovely first-time cross towards Lloyd who was arriving at the back post. However, Evans managed to get his head on the ball first, which then bounced off Lloyd and ran out for a goal kick. Mangotsfield tried to play out from the resulting goal-kick but, after left-back Owen Humphries gave Jones the ball in the centre-back position, Parry darted in and stole the
ball off Jones on the edge of the box before strolling in and coolly sliding it past a helpless Bees to give Almondsbury the lead. Three minutes later, Almondsbury doubled their lead when Richards picked up the ball in an advanced position and, instead of going it alone, he sensibly and unselfishly found the feet of Parry while all the Mangotsfield defenders stopped expecting to see the linesman’s flag raised for offside. However, the flag never came and Parry, with his back to goal, swivelled and hit the ball sharply, beyond the dive of Bees and into the far corner from just inside the box, doubling his and his team’s tally to make it 2-0 with a superb strike. Lane enjoy cup success with a Lewis hat-trick HARVEY Lewis was in great form in front of goal as Stoke Lane Under-13s progressed to the second round of the cup with a 7-3 win away at Clifton United. Lane were 3-0 up at half-time with headed goals from Josh Elgood and Will Ponting and a first Lewis strike following a goalmouth scramble. Clifton reduced the deficit to 3-1 at the start of the second half with a fine individual effort, but two further goals by Lewis made it 5-1 and an excellent hat-trick. Clifton never gave in and they struck twice more to make it 5-3 with ten minutes to go, only for Henry Birt to notch two further goals for Lane, including one direct from a corner, to wrap-up the scoring. Henbury Colts Under-13s also made it through to the second round thanks to a superb 6-2 win over Warmley Rangers. Warmley took the lead after ten minutes with a wonderful strike from outside the box but Kai Elliot and Harry Goodman strikes saw Henbury in front at the break. There was to be no looking back for the visitors and Jack Oxenham, Finley Smith, Goodman again and a smart finish from Josh Coterell completed the scoring for Henbury.
Warmley capitalised on some poor defending to claw a goal back but their opponents were well out of sight. In the Gloucestershire County Youth League, Winterbour ne United began the defence of their title with a 4-2 home defeat against league newcomers and pacesetters Frampton United. Jack Rhys-Jones and Jack Boughton were on target for Winterbourne, while Frampton’s Ryan Vincent followed up his hat-trick last week with a brace of goals. Also hitting the net for Frampton were Jamie Power and Jack Wardrop. Former champions Longwell Green Sports, who have returned to the league after several seasons away, also played their first match of the campaign when they entertained Almondsbury. The latter had lost 6-0 away to Cirencester Town in midweek in the FA Youth Cup and Sunday did not improve matters for the Almonds either as Longwell won 5-2, with Liam Oswin (2), Tom Summerhill, Sam Wentland and Toby Watson netting for the winners. Connor Hopwood bagged both Almondsbury’s goals from the penalty spot.

which to get back into the game, Mangotsfield never managed to break down the visitor’s solid defence and the final whistle blew with the score still at 2-0. On the whole, Almondsbury probably deserved the three points as their staunch defending had afforded the home side very few opportunities to test Smith, restricting them mainly to long-range efforts. Meanwhile, their attacking impetus eventually saw them break down what had been a strong Mangotsfield defence for most of the game.

Hyden eases Rovers’ nerves as United threaten to stage a late comeback Simon Parkinson juniorleague@bepp.co.uk BRISTOL Rovers JSC Under-11s kept up their winning form in the top division by beating Mangotsfield Colts 3-1 on the road. After a goalless first half, a mix-up over a Mangotsfield goal-kick led to Taylor Werrett pouncing to fire Rovers in front, and within a minute it was 2-0 courtesy of Keane Ashwood’s free-kick. Mangotsfield never gave up hope and they got their reward when a tame shot ended up in the Rovers net, but their comeback hopes were dashed with time running out as Elijah Hyden broke away at pace and scored with a crisp shot from the edge of the box, Rovers’ cause was helped by the performance of Harvey Milton, who enjoyed a solid game at centre-back. Deerswood Abbotonians Under-11s enjoyed a cracking weekend, recording two wins. In pouring rain and gloom at home on Friday night, they beat Brislington 3-1 in the League Cup, Harvey Mitchell and Kieran Williams (2) hitting the net after Bris had opened the scoring. Deerswood followed it up by securing three Division B points on Sunday with a 4-2 win over Cadbury Heath, thanks to a Jack Bater brace and Kieran Williams and Jensen Fiddes efforts. Stoke Lane and Downend Saints Under-11s fought out a scrappy 1-1 stalemate of few chances. Lane were awarded a penalty midway through the first half and, although the Downend keeper made a great save, Tom Isaac was first to react to the rebound to put the hosts one-up. However, they were unable to cling on to their slender advantage as Downend pounced on a defensive mix-up after the interval to level it up. Mangotsfield United Under-11s
locked horns with hosts Lawrence Weston for the first time in the C Division having both gained promotion last term. And a very close encounter it proved too as Highridge came out on top with a 4-2 victory thanks to a man-of-the-match performance from Jarvis Hill and goals by Nathan Portingale, Oscar Sullivan, Sean Bonks-Davis and Joshua Jenkins. In the Hanham Minor Cup, Stoke Lane Under-11s progressed to the second round of the HML A/B Cup

● Longwell Green Girls Under-15s celebrate a goal in the win over Fry’s Club in the Bristol Girls’ League continued their bright start to the A-Division season thanks to a 4-0 away success against Bitton. Harry Milton did well on the right flank to square the ball for Joseph Calloway to slot home Field’s opener, before the in-form Sam Barney crashed the ball into the bottom left
corner to double their advantage. Seb Scott grabbed the visitors’ third when his well-taken corner drifted straight into the net for a 3-0 half-time lead. Bitton came back into it after the break but seldom tested Mangotsfield keeper Jacob Glover and the solid
defensive partnership of Max Wiltshire and James Walker. With Owen Riddler and Josh Sandrone linking up well for Mangotsfield, Will Ashton put the contest to bed by making it 4-0 midway through the second half. Highridge United Under-10s
with a fighting 5-3 win over Downend Saints. Lane forged in front courtesy of an own goal but Downend scored two well-taken goals to lead at half-time. Charlie Sagar equalised for the Lane and then put them 3-2 up shortly after, only for Saints to dramatically hit back and force extra-time. Lane eventually edged in front in the second period of extra-time through Oakley Dawes’ well-taken finish, before the same player put the tie beyond doubt with his second of the game. Highridge United Under-10s are fast becoming the comeback kings as they turned around a 5-2 first-game deficit to come away with a 7-5 victory over Cadbury Heath. Terrific performances from goalscorers Mackenzie Boyle and Sean Bonks-Davis helped them on their way together with further strikes by Santino Reid (3), Jarvis Hill and Oscar Sullivan.
