THE omens were there as Bristol City returned to Gillingham looking for their first league win of the season – but they weren’t realised as Stuart Nelson played the role of Damien. After a 2-2 draw at home to Bradford on the opening day of the season, City headed to Priestfield to play the Gills in the Capital One Cup. City ran out 2-0 winners, but since that Tuesday night had failed to both keep a clean sheet and win in the league in three games – so what would a return to Priestfield offer? Could Sean O’Driscoll’s troops carry on from where they left off in their shock Capital One Cup upset against Premier League Crystal Palace? The answer was no – however, had it not been for Gillingham keeper Nelson, City would have been bombing back around the M25 and down the M4 with a spring in their step. Despite it taking an Adebayo Akinfenwa goal from a monstrous Charlie Lee throw-in to lift City, they still deserved to win once Marvin Elliott had equalised. Sam Baldock in particular will be grateful that, having now played Gillingham twice in a month they don’t face off again until March – such did Nelson keep him at bay. Two saves stand out, both in the second half – Nelson swinging an arm at a shot across goal and, towards the death, thwarting his free-kick when clearly blinded by his wall. However, City can take comfort from their second-half performance, and that Gillingham themselves are without a win the league. Gillingham got off to a quick start with Akinfenwa causing the City defence problems and Lee taking the opportunity to get his eye in with a few shots at goal. For all the home side’s pace, it was some quick thinking from front-man Baldock that almost put City ahead, the 24-year-old making Nelson sweat with an intuitive free-kick. Catching the eye – and approval – of referee Mick Russell, who would later be replaced by Barry Holderness after suffering a groin strain, Baldock’s quick effort drifted narrowly wide with 20 minutes on the clock. But it had been the hosts’ half, and they were soon rewarded when Lee’s long throw almost reached the

six-yard box and Akinfenwa glanced a header past Frank Fielding. City’s fortunes in the Gills box were improving, though, with Bobby Reid having a sweetly-struck half-volley blocked by Adam Barrett and Greg Cunningham forcing Nelson into a first save of the afternoon. In between, Danny Kedwell had the beating of Cunningham from a Myles Weston cross but his header skimmed the post, although Fielding had his hands up to say he had it covered.

20 ● Number of shots on goal by visitors Bristol City on Saturday, of which seven were on target Marlon Pack then tried his luck from long range, but that was comfortable enough for Nelson, before turning provider for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas to have a shot at beating the Gillingham keeper. He controlled well but was quickly charged down by Michael Harriman, who took the sting out of his shot with Nelson easily sweeping up. As trademark as Gillingham’s goal was, the manner of City’s equaliser was also typical, with midfielder Elliott latching on to a cross into the box and powering a header home. Scott Wagstaff took his time to curl a ball to the far post and Elliott, arriving on to the delivery late, placed his header across Nelson and into the bottom corner on the stroke of half-time. It was akin to his effort in the 5-4

loss at Coventry, albeit that was a volley, and it gave City the momentum that they took into the first minutes of the second half as they peppered the Gillingham defence. Nelson had to be sharp to deny Emmanuel-Thomas, while from the resulting corner Aden Flint found himself well positioned but couldn’t direct his header on target and took his frustration out on the advertising boards. City didn’t let up and Nelson once again saved well from Reid, who shot at the near post when perhaps Baldock was better positioned, before Gills boss Martin Allen decided to ring the changes. Off came Akinfenwa, his impetus having died down significantly, for Cody McDonald, who immediately went close, and Weston left the field, with Danny Hollands his replacement. Still it was City on top, and Wagstaff took full advantage of slack play on Gillingham’s left before cutting back perfectly for Baldock but, with Nelson scrambling, he scuffed his shot and it was cleared away. Former England international Nicky Shorey, who signed a short-term deal in the week, was sent on in the 60th minute for Reid and almost made the perfect start with his second touch of the ball. A long throw from Emmanuel-Thomas hit the back of Baldock’s head as he turned and it fell perfectly for Shorey. However, on his less favoured right foot, he sent his effort over the crossbar. Then came Nelson’s wonders to deny Baldock – the second from a free-kick that Shorey had earned after a driving run. No win but, on this performance, surely it won’t be too long before one comes.

SCOTT Wagstaff is adamant Bristol City will be celebrating their first league win of the season next time out – provided fortune favours the brave Robins battlers. City’s latest attempt to claim a maiden league victory saw them held 1-1 – and they were held – by Gillingham on Saturday. Wagstaff played a key role in City responding to Adebayo Akinfenwa’s headed opener as he delivered a pinpoint cross for Marvin Elliott, arriving late, to power home. However, City couldn’t find a way past in-form Gillingham keeper Stuart Nelson thereafter, notching up 20

shots, but with only Elliott’s effort finding the net. City’s next league fixture sees them welcome Peterborough, the division’s third highest goal-scorers – who smashed six past Reading in the Capital One Cup second round. That isn’t until September 14 due to the international break, but Wagstaff believes more of the same will see City break their duck. “In the second half, I felt that we looked lively and energetic,” said Wagstaff, who scored the winner in City’s Capital One Cup upset against Crystal Palace in the week. “I think we’ve been improving

game in, game out in the league. We’re a new group with lots of young players, so we’re still trying to gel together. “The performances recently, especially against Palace, showed that we’re getting better, and it’s not falling for us at the minute. “It was frustrating against Gillingham. I thought we played really well in the second half, and it just didn’t fall for us in the end. I think we should have come away with the three points. “Sometimes it happens that way in football, but at least we know we’re creating chances. If we keep doing

turn their attentions to Peterborough, they have the small matter of a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash with city rivals Rovers on Wednesday. And Wagstaff, who arrived on a free from Charlton at the end of last season, is relishing the chance to get one over on the League Two side. “I’ve played in a few derby games before, like Charlton-Millwall, but I’ve heard this one is a massive one,” he added. “I’m really looking forward to it. We know we’ve got to do it for the fans. They’ll make a lot of noise, and hopefully we’ll get them the result they want.”

Fan’s view by Matthew Withers AFTER our midweek Capital One Cup performance against Premier League Crystal Palace it’s hard to believe we sit 20th in League One, still searching for our first league win. I thought the team were excellent against Ian Holloway’s side, and we more than deserved the win. We played the better football, scored two very good goals and defended solidly. I was particularly impressed with Eliot Parish in goal. The youngster looked very composed and his kicking was excellent. The other stand-out players were Bobby Reid and Joe Bryan. Both are products of the academy and are the key to the club’s future. Reid ran his socks off and was always available for the ball. Joe Bryan is a composed footballer and has a great left foot. I’m not sure I’ve seen the same quality of delivery when on the run from the left-hand side since Brian Tinnion in his pomp. It was a shame that Bryan picked up an injury late on. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Sam Baldock linked up well, with Jet scoring a fine goal. The former Ipswich and Arsenal forward was a real handful. The win on Tuesday should have given the team the confidence to go to Gillingham and grab that important first league win of the season. Unfortunately, our first-half performance was not good enough. We allowed the Gills to score a cheap goal and didn’t get going. We are struggling to put in a performance over 90 minutes. The stats at the end of the game showed that City had 60 per cent possession and 20 shots at goal, with seven on target. Gillingham had a physical presence, but we really should have come away with all three points. Sam Baldock missed his kick when he seemed destined to score after a great cut back from Scott Wagstaff, and then saw the Gillingham number one pull off a number of fine saves. We have some very young players, and they will struggle to perform week-in and week-out for 90 minutes. I think there are some very good signs, and some of the football has been excellent. We have arguably been the better team in all three of our draws, but our failure to make the most of some good opportunities and then a tendency to shoot ourselves in the foot at the back has cost us. You have a feeling that if we start games with a better tempo we can give a side a real hammering. The transfer window closes today and whilst we can’t throw thousands at it, we do need to try to sign one or two players and invest some of the money that will have come in following the sales of Steven Davies and Albert Adomah. Nicky Shorey is an excellent signing and will provide competition on the left-hand side, and we need to do the same for the right. We also need more competition up front. Hopefully Sean O’Driscoll can do something.

that, we will start putting them away soon. “The boys are brilliant, we’re all similar ages and I know we’re going to get that win sooner rather than later. “I think we’ve playing well in both the cup and league, it’s just that we’ve been winning games in the cup. We’ve got to stick with it, knowing that three points will come eventually. The fans were brilliant, they clapped us off at the end and we need them to stay behind us. The sooner we get that league win, the more confident we will become.” Of course, before the Robins can

Fan’s view with Dennis Payter I MUST start with the one moment of class from the best player on the pitch – Tom Lockyer, who was rightly named man-of-the-match. His goal came after good work from Ellis Harrison and Lee Brown as the full-back overlapped to put in a great centre, which Lockyer expertly put away in a style that Rickie Lambert would have been proud of. Good players have the time to pick their spot, and rarely can that be said with a header, but that’s the way it appeared as the highly promising 18-year-old coolly nodded it into the corner of the net. Lockyer showed he could play as an attacking midfield player, but his defensive qualities also showed up as he was in the right place at the right time again just before the break as he cleared from under his own crossbar. It was amazing that a youngster who doesn’t look the strongest of players was able to shine, as this game sadly developed into mayhem as the ball was kicked longer and higher. At least the early goal kept everyone happy, as although the game was incident-packed and entertaining the quality of football got worse as it went on. Northampton were determined not to take things lying down as they crashed into tackles, and were by far the dirtiest team we have seen for a long time. Sadly, the physical challenges are a big part of League Two, but if this is Cobblers manager Aidy Boothroyd’s style them I’m glad the former Rovers player has never become manager of our side. Gashead Laura Warren, stood next me, was receiving cards as she celebrated her 20th birthday, but even she did not get as many as the visitors. We wondered what number Cobblers’ Gary Deegan gave the referee when he was booked, as he had number 17 on his shorts and 35 on his shirt. It was good that we sustained the late battering as they laid siege to our goal. At least it showed we had learned from the Newport game, and those qualities should stand us in good stead on Wednesday night. Some of our clearances were terrible, just keeping us under pressure, as we again lacked composure at the back, but the players will point out that they kept the clean sheet and got the three points. We had our bit of luck when for the free-kick the Cobblers got on the edge of our box near the end clearly looked as if the infringement was in the box. We knew it was going to be our day when Chris Hackett’s shot came back off the post with Steve Mildenhall well beaten. It was good to see the return of Matt Harrold and that he came through such a physical game unscathed. He fed off the scraps our defence dishes out these days, but at least they are giving nothing at all to the opposition.

Bristol Rovers vs Northampton Town | Memorial Stadium, Saturday, August 31

Resilient Rovers begin to get rewards for hard graft THE fine margins between football success and failure were probably none more so evident than when watching the ball ricochet off the post following Northampton winger Chris Hackett’s attempt to convert a direct free-kick in the final minute at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday. That the ball deflected away to safety instead of creeping inside the post meant Bristol Rovers supporters would have woken yesterday harbouring a more positive outlook on their side’s start to the season. The three points, which secured back-to-back victories, moved Rovers on to seven after their opening five league games – a tally not to be scoffed at when the well-documented injury problems are considered. Things are looking a lot brighter than they did when manager John Ward trooped off the pitch at Rodney Parade a fortnight ago to reprimand a team that had managed just one point from their first three games. A flea in the ear seems not to have done the players any harm if a maximum points haul from the following two games is anything to go by – even if they made hard work of securing victory over ten-man York City before being the beneficiaries of some clueless refereeing on Saturday. That said, with a squad of players willing to work as hard as the ones at Rovers do consistently, neither victory should be attributed to luck. Perhaps Rovers’ improvement can be, in part, explained by the returns from injury of several senior players. Is it coincidence Garry Kenneth’s return to the bench has coincided with the back five re-finding the form that was responsible for dragging the team clear of relegation last season? That Matt Gill, Matt Harrold and Ryan Brunt are to be joined in the squad by the likes of Ollie Clarke, Jim Paterson and Seanan Clucas over the next few weeks should guarantee further improvement after an opening month of the season during which Ward has been forced to call on a number of boys to carry out a job more suited to that of men. Shaquille Hunter, Josh Southway and Pat Keary all swapped shorts and

boots for suits and shoes as they milled around the concourse before the game on Saturday, yet one young man – Tom Lockyer – is unlikely to join his peer group on a match-day watching brief any time soon. “This was Tom’s day,” Ward said after watching the 18-year-old raise his stock even further by scoring his first senior goal. The second-minute strike to convert Lee Brown’s cross off his head at the back post to add the finishing touch to a move the manager described as one of “real quality” proved to be decisive Ward was just as pleased with the way Lockyer cleared from under his own crossbar to deny Northampton striker Clive Platt an opportunity to score an equaliser towards the end of the first half. Lockyer was not the only one to emerge with credit from a game during which Rovers were required to show some defensive resilience. Michael Smith was probably the pick of the back four; swarming all over dangerous winger Ishmel Demontagnac in an ultimately successful attempt to prevent him from getting the chance to turn and get the ball out of his feet to exploit wide open spaces down the left flank. It was an individual display that perhaps best encapsulated the overall team effort, although Mark McChrystal also merits mention for some astute positional play to anticipate and snuff out Northampton before they had the opportunity to penetrate. On the few occasions Aidy Boothroyd’s side did, however, they

were met with an in-form Steve Mildenhall, who made one fine reflex save to deny Platt converting off his head in the 11th minute before going on to show safe hands to deal with Northampton’s continued aerial bombardment with little fuss. Boothroyd, meanwhile, made minimal fuss when asked about the performance of referee Mark Haywood afterwards – surprising when you consider the official denied Northampton what were reasonable appeals for a penalty kick on three separate occasions. Haywood rubbed salt in the wound by sending off striker Roy O’Donovan for a second bookable offence in injury time, but Boothroyd quipped: “I don’t get paid enough as it is. I can’t afford to get fined for talking about referees.” Ward, meanwhile, was just happy to talk about the way his players had gone about their business four days before they make the trip to Ashton Gate to contest the first competitive Bristol derby in over six years. He knows what to expect after watching JET, Sam Baldock et al dismantle Premier League Crystal Palace in the Capital One Cup last Tuesday. It’s a good job, then, that his defence is starting to re-find some of the form that made Rovers such a formidable opponent last season. ● Tom Lockyer scores Rovers’ goal

Match reaction PROMISING youngster Tom Lockyer says it was difficult to describe his feelings after scoring his first senior goal for Bristol Rovers. Lockyer showed composure to aim a back-post header past Northampton goalkeeper Matt Duke in the second minute of a 1-0 win over Northampton Town at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday. “It was all a bit of a blur,” he said afterwards. “I had to see it again on the TV to remember exactly how it all came about. “I was delighted to score, but I didn’t really know what to do. I’m not really used to scoring goals, so I just got pushed towards the stand and everybody jumped on. “I think celebrations are

something I’ll really have to work on!” He added: “It was an amazing feeling; especially to score a goal that won us the game. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I heard the fans singing my name and it was amazing. I can’t really describe it. “I’m thankful for that, but I have to keep going. I’ve only had three or four games, and it is a long season. I have to work hard to make sure that I am still there at the end of it.” Lockyer was also afforded the man-of-the-match accolade by sponsors and he added: “I heard it announced when there was a break in play towards the end of the game. “At the time I was just thinking about making sure we saw the game out to get three points, because there

was still a few minutes to go. It was a great feeling when the referee blew his whistle, because it was a big result for us. “There has always been a great atmosphere around the place, even when results weren’t going our way. There is a strong togetherness and belief, so we always knew it was only a matter of time before we started to win some games.” Manager John Ward, meanwhile, is starting to see his squad bolstered with the return of senior players from injury, and Lockyer admitted: “It is always in the back of your mind that you might drop out of the team when you see all the senior players coming back in to the squad. “I just concentrate on trying to do

FA Cup round-up

Magnificent seven for Manor Farm in cup BRISTOL Manor Farm stor med into the next round of the FA Cup with a 7-1 preliminary round victory over Lymington. George Brimson, Pete Sheppard and Kye Holly all scored inside the opening 20 minutes to put Manor Farm in total control of the tie. Shane Sims pulled a goal back after Ashley Clark had saved his spot-kick, but Brimson then scored twice more to complete his hat-trick before half-time. Will Hailston converted a penalty early in the second half and Sheppard completed the scoring with another goal 15 minutes from time. Brislington enjoyed an equally comfortable passage, scoring all of their goals in the first half as visiting St Blazey were beaten 4-0. Neikell Plummer netted a double, with the other strikes coming from Danny Barwood and Luke Meacham. Larkhall shocked Southern League side Tiverton 1-0 with a late winner from Rob Hobbs, while Tom Collett scored twice as Hallen beat Bournemouth Poppies 4-2. Longwell Green will contest a replay following their 2-2 draw at Moneyfields, where the home side took a two-goal lead through Steve Hedges and Bobby Scott. However, Christian Lee halved the deficit shortly before half-time and Sam Thomas grabbed a second-half equaliser after Andy Summers’ penalty had been saved. Tom Manning, Jamie Howson and Mark Randall were all on target in Wells’ 3-2 win over Bodmin, while Corsham beat fellow Toolstation League side Sherborne 2-0. Two other Toolstation League sides went out – Bridport, beaten 3-2 at home by Merthyr, while Ilfracombe were thumped 4-1 at Plymouth Parkway. ● Yate raised hopes of another great FA Cup run as they came from behind to beat Cowes 2-1 in their preliminary-round tie at Lodge Road. A Yate side containing few survivors from last season’s memorable exploits fell behind early on, but goals from Ross Staley and Lewis Haldane saw them through. In-form striker Lee Davies shot Cowes into a seventh-minute lead, driving the ball beyond goalkeeper Martin Horsell from the edge of the penalty area.

The closest Yate came to an equaliser before the break was when Haldane was denied by a point-blank save from Staley’s driven cross. In the second half, Staley had a shot blocked, Joe Chandler put an effort wide and Ricky Hulbert drove the ball into the side netting before the leveller finally arrived. With 25 minutes to go, Staley advanced from midfield before slamming a superb shot beyond the goalkeeper. The winner came with a little over ten minutes remaining when Haldane steered the ball home after Jake Jackson had fluffed the chance to score himself. CLEVEDON came from behind to beat Toolstation League strugglers Bishop Sutton in the preliminary round of the FA Cup. Sutton, yet to pick up a point in the league, took a surprise lead on 20 minutes when Chris Chisholm tapped in Adam Mahdi’s cross. The Calor Southern League Division One South & West side responded with a number of efforts before levelling ten minutes before the

break. Conor O’Sullivan exposed the Sutton defence with a fine cross and Matt Thorne headed the ball beyond goalkeeper Liam May. Town dominated the second period and went in front on 65 minutes when Sam Teale headed Danny Wring’s corner into the net. Six minutes later, Thorne scored the killer third goal when he placed his shot across the goalkeeper. Teale added his second goal ten minutes from time, chipping the ball over May after being played in by Adie Adams. ● Clevedon return to league action at Tiverton tomorrow (7.45pm).

● The number of first-half goals scored by Brislington in their 4-0 victory against St Blazey kick put Toolstation League side Street into the next round. Rovers, who faced Norwich City in the first round proper in 2009, dominated the game for long periods, only to be consistently denied by goalkeeper Nathan Whatley. The Street stopper thwarted Josh Klein-Davies and James Billing early on before visiting skipper Dan Cleverley had an effort cleared off the goalline. Whatley made a fingertip save to frustrate Billing, while Klein-Davies and Brandon Barnes also had attempts blocked by home goalkeeper. Fifteen minutes from time, though, Street’s Jack Malone was felled in the penalty area by Marcus Mapstone and Salter converted from the spot. In response, Billing finally beat Whatley only for the ball to be cleared, while Mike Perrott turned Joe Vyner’s cross wide of the target late on. Paulton’s league match at Bridgwater tomorrow has been postponed due to the Fairfax Park side’s FA Cup replay with Taunton.

FIRST-half goals from Jamie Reid and Josh Egan and a second-half strike from Shaun Lamb booked Mangotsfield United a trip to Winchester City in the first qualifying round. After George Lloyd went close for Bitton early on, the hosts took a 17th-minute lead when Jamie Reid hooked a low cross from Neil Arndale into the bottom-left corner of the Bitton net. On 24 minutes, Mangotsfield went close to adding a second when Ben Hunt's near-post header from a corner by Egan was deflected behind. Hunt went close again for the Southern League Division One South & West side 12 minutes later, when he made ground into the penalty area and shot just wide. A second goal for Mangotsfield came three minutes before half-time. A corner from the right was cleared as far as Egan, who drilled the ball home from 20 yards for his first goal for the club. The first chance of the second half also came Mangotsfield’s way on the hour mark, when Kyle Tooze volleyed over from 14 yards. Minutes later, a deep corner from the left was met by Ryan Bennett, who guided a header back across goal and wide of the far post. On 70 minutes, after being awarded a free-kick, Shaun Lamb lifted the ball a yard over the crossbar. Then, four minutes later, a ball into the Bitton area was worked to Hunt, but the striker’s effort from the right side of the area drifted wide of the far post. After using all three substitutes, Toolstation League Premier Division Bitton finished the match with ten men after skipper Rob Smith limped from the field with 12 minutes remaining. With the tie petering out, Mangotsfield had two more late chances. The first fell to Tooze, who was denied as Bitton goalkeeper Ashley Bryan saved low to his left. Then, in the second minute of stoppage time, Lamb added a third goal for Mangotsfield when he fired home from close range.

WESTON recorded their first victory at Chelmsford City’s Melbourne Park as they came from behind and moved up to fifth spot in the Skrill South League. In a scrappy first half, the home side had the better of the exchanges, with David Rainford firing just over the crossbar, before Tom Davis nar-

rowly failed to connect with Mark Hughes’ cross with the goal gaping in front of him. For Weston, Kane Ingram twice fired shots across the face of goal, and Ashley Kington had a strong effort blocked and cleared to safety by the home defence. The deadlock was broken on 35 minutes, when Sam Long burst through, and when Weston keeper Luke Purnell came off his line to challenge, Long lifted the ball over the keeper and in off the underside of the crossbar.

Weston began to take control of the contest in the second half, with Naby Diallo and Dayle Grubb bossing the midfield, and the away side drew level on 55 minutes when Tristan Plummer put Diallo through to score. The winner came on 80 minutes, when Grubb was tripped by Mark Haines and Plummer beat former Tottenham goalkeeper Tommy Forecast from the penalty spot. Earlier, Forecast had twice made excellent saves in quick succession to deny Plummer and Diallo.

BATH bounced back to winning ways with a victory over Skrill South new boys Concord Rangers. Rangers could have gone ahead in the third minute when Sam Collins hit a post with a shot from 30 yards. The home side took the lead when a free-kick from Ross Stearn cannoned off the crossbar and into the net.

Stern headed narrowly over the bar for City, Andy Watkins had a shot cleared off the line and Dave Pratt robbed Butler of the ball only to see his goal-bound shot pushed wide. Rangers drew level with a shot from Sam Collins that Jason Mellor let run through his legs. The visitors were level for only two minutes, as Stearn fired home through a crowd of players. Then, with 23 minutes to go, a Stearn free-kick found trialist Will Salmon. His shot came back of the post and Mark Preece scored the follow-up.

Goal-hero Giroud delighted with Arsenal’s spirit Arsenal

Tottenham

ARSENAL match-winner Olivier Giroud hailed Arsenal’s togetherness after they were able to hold on to claim a 1-0 north London derby victory over Tottenham. The Gunners moved fourth in the Barclays Premier League table, leap-frogging Spurs, as Giroud’s first-half winner was enough to hand them bragging rights and keep the pressure up at the top. The France striker said: “Everybody knows it’s a big game for us and the fans are really excited. “We want to keep it up after our three wins and we did well this afternoon. We never gave up and we showed a real togetherness.” Arsenal took the lead after 23 minutes when Tomas Rosicky found Theo Walcott on the right, his neat cross reached Giroud on the edge of the six-yard box and the striker flicked the ball past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Giroud added: “I used to do that in training, so Theo knows me very well. I feel I know my team-mates and they know me much better, so we find each other without opening our eyes.” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has made only a small dip in the summer transfer market compared to big-spending Tottenham. Wenger has completed only the free transfers of midfielder Mathieu Flamini and France Under-21 striker Yaya Sanogo. On keeping his faith with the team, Aaron Ramsey said of Wenger: “He recognises the quality in the team and we’ve shown again today that we

have an enormous amount of quality in the team, even though we’re probably a bit short of numbers. “That probably showed in the last 20 minutes of the game, we were a bit tired from all the games we have played. “But he believes in us and hopefully we’ve repaid him so far. Hopefully, we can continue this good run we’re on at the moment.” On the prospect of new faces arriving before the transfer window

closes tonight, Ramsey added: “The manager’s trying to bring in some players, but he believes in the quality we have. “We’ve shown again what we’re capable of doing. “I thought we played a tremendous game today, we worked ever so hard and the big man up front started it off for us and the whole team did very well. “We didn’t give them much space to play through the lines and obviously we got the goal in the first half and defended ever so well and I thought we deserved the win in the end.” Wenger played down the fact that Jack Wilshere left the field minutes before half-time for Flamini, who rejoined Arsenal this week on a free transfer from AC Milan. The Arsenal boss confirmed that the England midfielder was suffering from an illness ahead of the game along with Bacary Sagna, who started on the bench.

Davies sets up Swansea’s first win of the season West Brom

BEN Davies’ emphatic volley and Pablo Hernandez’s late second handed Swansea their first points of the Barclays Premier League season. Having lost to Manchester United and Tottenham, Michael Laudrup’s side were in need of a result to lift them off bottom spot and duly delivered, with Hernandez teeing up Davies for the opener before applying the finishing touch in the 83rd minute. Swansea had begun lethargically, but West Brom failed to convert a lively start into goals and paid the price when Davies’ second career

goal left them chasing the game. They could not find a way back into it as the game progressed and instead found themselves opened up at the back in the closing minutes. While Swansea’s campaign is now up and running, Albion head into the international break with one point from three matches. The day had started with Steve Clarke confirming Nicolas Anelka’s return to the fold, less than two weeks since his mooted retirement, by including the striker in the starting XI. His name was the most notable on Clarke’s team sheet but there was also a first league start for on-loan Manchester City winger Scott Sinclair, against his old club. All eyes were on Anelka and he was busy. He beat Swansea’s offside trap early on but, having darted into the area, his cut back was easily gathered

by Michel Vorm. Anelka’s hunger was again in evidence when he chased a lofted pass right to the byline and dragged his pass back towards Billy Jones, who failed to get a clean connection. Against the run of play, Davies struck. Hernandez was the provider, attacking the left of the West Brom defence and finding Davies at the second attempt, his first cross having been headed clear. When the ball fell for the left-back he met it with a crisp side-footed volley that left Boaz Myhill rooted. Late in the game, Hernandez, shortly after grazing the crossbar from 20 yards, was on hand when Michu unselfishly rolled the ball across the box from close range. Michu might have shot from an awkward angle, but instead left his fellow Spaniard with a near open goal.

Match-winner Sturridge is an injury worry for England’s two matches

DANIEL Sturridge continued his early-season heroics to help Liverpool beat Manchester United, before admitting he had played with an injury. The striker got his fifth goal in four games to see off the Premier League champions 1-0 at Anfield, helping Daniel Agger’s header beyond David De Gea. He did so in front of watching Eng-

land manager Roy Hodgson, and his form would surely put him in line to feature in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine. Those chances increased when United boss David Moyes ruled Wayne Rooney out of the fixtures with a facial injury, but Sturridge gave Hodgson even more to worry about. “It was great to have the manager here, it’s important for me to be out on the field,” said Sturridge after handing Moyes his first league defeat since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson. “I had a problem with my thigh

before the game, it’s still hindering me now, but I went out and put on a good performance for the boys. Hopefully, I’ll be okay for the (England) squad.” Liverpool have now won all three of their Premier League games 1-0, and Sturridge added: “We have been working hard as a team since the start of the season. It’s not about individuals. We came out to work for the fans and the club.” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was keen to stress that a better mental resolve has helped his side at the back. “Our mentality was key. We didn’t

play as well as we have and Manchester United played some really good football, but our defensive mentality gets better all the time,” he said.“The resolve we have in the group was evident.” Despite their defeat, Moyes was pleased with how his players perfor med. “I thought we played really well,” said Moyes. “Liverpool were resolute and made it hard for us to score. We maybe didn’t quite create the best with the crossing. We got two or three opportunities in the second half and were just a little bit unfortunate that we didn’t take them.”

Negredo: I’m very happy with City life Manchester City

2

Hull City

ALVARO Negredo has made a positive impact at Manchester City, but is determined to make even more waves. The striker continued his good start in City colours by coming off the bench to claim the breakthrough goal in Saturday’s laboured 2-0 win over Hull in the Barclays Premier League. Negredo broke the deadlock for an otherwise unconvincing City with a firm header after 64 minutes, before Yaya Toure completed the scoring with a brilliant last-minute free-kick. Negredo’s goal was his second since his summer move from Sevilla after netting in last week’s shock loss at Cardiff, while he also had a strike wrongly disallowed in the season-opening win over Newcastle. The Spaniard, who is still to start this season, said: “Luckily for me, I’m scoring goals and happy to help the team. “Last week the goal didn’t matter, but this week it helped the team to open the scoring and, with Yaya’s goal, we closed the game. “I’m very happy with my performance. I would like to play more minutes, but it is the manager’s decision and I accept it. “I will keep working hard to get more game-time. “I’m very happy and I’ve settled in well. I hope to keep helping City by scoring more goals.” Negredo was introduced at half-time in an attempt to inject fresh life into a lethargic City side. Hull had some of the game’s better chances, with Sone Aluko racing clear early on only to shoot wide. Danny Graham had a fine volley ruled out for offside and Robert Koren went close from long range. But Negredo finally put the home side ahead from Pablo Zabaleta’s cross.

ing to save his job but, after guiding Palace back to the top-flight through the play-offs he believes his position is not in question. “I can assure you (chairman) Steve (Parish) and I know what we are trying to do and are pulling in the right direction,” he said. “I can’t help what people think or what people say, I’m just going to do as good a job as I can, and 80-odd days ago I think I did a pretty good job, to be honest.” Mali winger Jimmy Kebe became the club’s 11th summer signing when he joined from Reading on Saturday but Holloway, who is likely to add Huddersfield full-back Jack Hunt to his squad, is still looking for even more new recruits. “We’re going to smash some things and the chairman and the other directors really want to have a go,” he added.

● Crystal Palace celebrate their first goal, scored by Danny Gabbidon, left

EPB-E01-S3

CRYSTAL Palace boss Ian Holloway was left feeling vindicated on Saturday after his decision to rotate his entire starting line-up for the Capital One Cup gave his squad a freshness for their 3-1 win over Sunderland. Holloway rested every player that started the 2-1 loss at Stoke last weekend for the second-round trip to Bristol City, which ended in a 2-1 defeat. But, with the same starting XI that played at Stoke recalled for the visit of Sunderland, goals from Danny Gabbidon, Dwight Gayle and Stuart O‘Keefe secured their first Barclays Premier League points of the season.

Sunderland skipper John O’Shea was dismissed after fouling Jason Puncheon in the box following Steven Fletcher’s equaliser for the visitors. Gayle tucked away the resulting penalty to put the Eagles on their way to a memorable victory, with Holloway delighted with his decision to make the midweek changes. “This time last year we played Bristol City away (in the Championship) with a full team and lost 4-1,” he said. “In the week I made a big decision that I was not going to take the ones who were involved on Saturday and I thought you saw the freshness. “I spoke to the chairman about it and wasn’t scared of any sort of bad result – we got one, but we had no balance in that team.” There had been suggestions in previous weeks that Holloway was fight-

Bristol bounce back in style with 12 tries Clifton

Steve Cotton

BRISTOL beat Clifton by 12 tries to nil to ensure they finished their pre-season fixtures having been on both ends of one-sided scorelines. After defeats of 69-5 at Bath and 51-7 at Exeter, the boot was on the other foot for a Bristol side who scored five tries in the first half and seven in the second to overwhelm a game and committed – but ultimately limited – Clifton team. Despite the margin of victory, the match has potentially thrown up a couple of problems for Bristol, with hooker Ross Johnston being sent off for a tip-tackle and fly-half Tristan Roberts leaving the ground in a sling after suffering a shoulder injury. But, whereas Bath and Exeter had dealt comfortably with Bristol’s attacking threat, while carving their defence open with alarming regularity, the traditional pre-season match at Clifton allowed the Championship side to be much more forceful. Despite scoring 12 tries, where they really impressed was in their desire to win back the ball whenever they did not have it. As a result, Clifton were suffocated when in possession, as Bristol did to the National Two South side what the bigger boys had done to them on the two previous weekends. On-trial winger Sammy Speight scored a hat-trick for Bristol, while Luke Eves and James Merriman both scored twice. Callum Braley, James Hall and Mitch Eadie also crossed, while the tally was completed by two penalty tries. Eves, the scorer of two long-range tries in the second half, said: “We were embarrassed about how we performed in the last two weeks, even though it’s been against Premiership opposition, so we definitely needed this run-out and it’s good to get a few tries. “The defences were so good when we played Bath and Exeter – and, although we’re aspiring to be like them, it is nice to play a game where we could get our structures in place and get a few tries ourselves. “We weren’t perfect but I think we’ve taken a step forward from the last few weeks; even though the opposition has been considerably lower, I think we’ve got a lot out of it.” Bristol’s defence was particularly tested when they were reduced to 12 men shortly before half-time. After Johnston saw red, both props – Hall and Bruce Douglas – were sent to the sin-bin, leaving Bristol three men down as Clifton attacked their line repeatedly. Yet still they managed to repel their hosts and deny them the

points their effort and endeavour had probably deserved. “All credit to Clifton, they really did push us hard, and at times they did fluster us,” said Eves. “We spoke before the game about how embarrassed we felt in the last two weeks, and we really wanted to put it right by showing some of what we could do. I still think we left a lot out there – but it was a good hit out. “Our discipline is probably something we need to work on – it’s unacceptable to go down to 12 men, but then again, it was probably useful in that it showed the spirit of the team when we had to work for each other and cover those wide spaces.” Bristol took the lead through a fourth-minute penalty try when their scrum power overwhelmed Clifton, before scrum-half Braley broke straight from a scrum and darted through to increase his side’s advantage. Marco Mama sent Speight away for his first try on 15 minutes, before prop Hall started and finished a slick attacking move for try number four, taking Ben Skirving’s offload and diving over. Speight soon had his second try after Mama charged down Charlie Foley’s attempted clearance and sent the winger clear. Clifton had their moments in attack – and generally opted to run the ball or send it to touch. But, as Bristol had found to their cost against Bath and Exeter, against higher-level opposition, there is little room for error. Johnston’s dismissal – and the subsequent yellow cards for Hall and Douglas – unsurprisingly led to Clifton’s lengthiest spell of possession in the match. But Bristol’s players stuck together in the face of increasing pressure and were consistently able to make tackles and force turnovers, eventually alleviating the threat. Seconds after the restart, Eves raced in for the first of his long-range tries, before a second penalty try was awarded from a close-range scrum. Clifton lost prop Tarquin Ledner to the sin-bin, before replacement Mitch Eadie finished powerfully after Bristol had stolen a line-out, while another back-row replacement, Nick Koster, put Speight in for his hat-trick. In the latter stages, with fitness and physicality coming to the fore, Bristol’s control became absolute. Eves showed power and balance to score another from distance, before Ruki Tipuna set up Merriman following a scrum in the Clifton 22. Koster’s offload to Merriman in the closing minutes allowed the Welshman to complete the rout.

Laura’s stoppage-time spot-kick gives Academy a crucial victory Lincoln Ladies

LAURA Del Rio fired home a stoppage-time penalty to give Bristol Academy a 1-0 win at Lincoln as they resumed their FA Women’s Super League campaign with a crucial victory. The result was vital as leaders Liverpool and second-placed Arsenal also gained three points. It keeps the Vixens in third spot – still with an outside chance of challenging for the title – and strengthens their push for their first top-three finish. Bristol had not played a competitive game for three weeks, and manager Mark Sampson admitted that was a factor in his side’s performance during the first 45 minutes. “It really was a game of two halves,” said Sampson. “In the first, we showed the effects of not playing for three weeks because we were second to the ball. “This was Lincoln’s last game at Sincil Bank and they wanted to end on a high, so were right up for it. But we got better as it went on and I thought we just about deserved the win in the end.” Lincoln – who will operate as Notts County’s women’s side next season in a controversial switch – had a good early chance, but striker Bonnie Horwood was foiled by a fine save from Bristol goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain. Though the home side had the better of the opening period, their best hope of breaking the deadlock came on the hour when the Vixens had a quickfire series of escapes. England skipper Casey Stoney hit the post with a header, and her Three Lionesses team-mate Jess Clarke was the first to react to the loose ball. But Clarke fired her shot straight at the grounded Chamberlain and then

● Laura Del Rio was Bristol Academy’s match-winner at Lincoln yesterday Stoney was again denied by a goal-line clearance, as Lincoln failed to capitalise during the goalmouth flurry. After that, the visitors started to get the upper hand, and Natalia Sanchon squandered a great chance 15 minutes from time when she nodded Grace McCatty’s cross over the top

with the net beckoning. The outcome was finally settled three minutes into stoppage time when good work by Sanchon led to Sophie Walton being penalised for handling, and Del Rio stepped up to sidefoot home the resulting spot-kick. There was barely time for the game to re-start, before the whistle went to

seal Bristol’s third successive away win in the WSL. The Vixens are on the road again on Thursday when they travel to Chelsea, and then have another away game, at Arsenal, next Sunday. Other FA WSL results: Arsenal 3 Doncaster Rovers Belles 1, Birmingham City 2 Liverpool 4, Everton 3 Chelsea 2.

This is a massive one-day international series for me, says Wright “It’s a massive series for myself,” he said. “It’s something we have worked for for a long time. Since I got injured and lost my place, I have been desperate to get back into it. “It’s an opportunity to stake a claim. There is a World Cup in 2015 and, whenever you are in front of the selectors, it’s a huge series.” Wright has been in good form for England in Twenty20 cricket, where he remains a first choice, and captained the England Lions in their recent 3-0 series win over Bangladesh A. Wright most notably smashed an unbeaten 143, from 68 balls, in the first game of that series – and just days after a century for Sussex

against Holland – to demand the attention of the selectors. They duly responded with his long-awaited call-up, for a one-off match against Ireland on Tuesday before a five-game series against Australia, along with five uncapped players. Those changes have cast the upcoming games as an audition for the fringe players to prove they should remain when England’s stars return to duty this winter in Australia. “It’s about taking your chance,” said Wright. “I am sure those guys will come back in at some stage, but it’s about taking your opportunities when you get them. “Ultimately, you want to be in that

next squad when it comes to going to Australia and then each one going on to the World Cup. The only way to do that is to take your chance.” Wright admits he is unsure, however, what role he will be asked to play as he bids to earn his place back. The 28-year-old often found himself shunted up and down the order in his initial spell in the team, at one stage being used as an opener. He has made a home for himself at three in Twenty20 cricket, but batted at five for the England Lions. “We will have meetings over the next few days. It’s two different squads as well, so whether I play two different roles I am not too sure,” he said. “I honestly don’t mind where I bat. I have been up and down the order and it gives me a chance to sneak into the side if they need someone at six, seven or to open.”

Nothing seemed to happen for me, says Wood Peter Godsiff epsport@b-nm.co.uk CHRIS Wood’s challenge at the ISPS Handa Welsh Open at Celtic Manor ended in bitter disappointment after the elation of a magnificent start to his ‘home’ tour nament. The Long Ashton player’s early delight, following an excellent opening five-under-par round 66, to end the day in joint second, turned to despair as the weekend unfolded. A combination of missed putts, balls diverted by the swirling wind and occasional misjudgement over a course that proved to be as tough as any on this year’s European Tour, proved costly. But many leading players suffered as well. “I didn’t play well all week,” he said. “It was disappointing and if I hadn’t chipped and putted as well as I did, I would have probably finished last. “Despite everything I did nothing seemed to happen. Yet I could have ended up in the top 20, which would have been a great result considering. “I took five at the 16th and then another five at the short 17th, yet I didn’t hit a bad shot at either hole. I missed my spot by a yard at 17 and the ball plugged in the bunker.” But, as usual, he is taking positives from the week. He said that his back, which kept him out for two months, is now giving him few problems. The other bonus was that his coach Paul Mitchell, the Bristol and Clifton club professional, was able to watch each one of the 288 shots. “I have this week off and we can now work on my game this week before I play my next event, the Dutch Open,” he said. His four-over-par return left him in a share of 39th place, 12 shots behind Frenchman Gregory Bourdy, who emerged from the pack in a dramatic final afternoon and finished with three successive birdies over the hardest holes on the course. The lead changed hands frequently, with third-round leader American Peter Uihlein and Dane Soren Kjeldsen also in the battle. Wood’s ISM stable-mate Chris Lloyd spent the weekend back in Kingswood after missing the cut by one shot for the second successive week. After returning early from the Johnnie Walker at Gleneagles, his total of five-over-par 147 left him on 74th spot at Celtic Manor. Erratic play proved expensive as he made one double bogey, six bogeys and four birdies in an opening 75. His hopes looked even more remote after he dropped three further shots after six holes of his second round. But he has always been a fighter and gradually hauled himself back with a succession of pars, a birdie at the eighth and an eagle at the driveable 15th. Dropping a shot at the tough 16th proved fatal. Meanwhile, Liam Bond, the St Pierre touring player who has dominated the West Country PGA scene this year, faltered after causing a sensation by leading at halfway on five-under-par. Sadly, there was no fairytale ending. He was placed joint 43rd after rounds of 78 and 74.

ALL-ROUNDER Luke Wright is determined to re-establish himself in England’s one-day international team after more than two years on the fringes. Wright, pictured, has not played a 50-over match in England colours since their World Cup quarter-final exit to Sri Lanka in March 2011. But he has been given the chance to add to his 46 ODI caps in the upcoming matches against Ireland and Australia, following the decision to rest the core of England’s Ashes winners. England’s selectors have been criticised for omitting the likes of skipper Alastair Cook and James Anderson, but it presents an opportunity for players on the periphery, such as Wright, to push their claims as preparations start to begin for the World Cup in 18 months’ time.

Promoted Weston miss out on the title after slipping to last-day Thornbury defeat Steve Hill epsport@b-nm.co.uk WESTON-super-Mare missed the chance to clinch the WEPL Premier Two title after suffering a final-day 39-run defeat at Thornbury. The Seasiders were guaranteed promotion before the start of play. And they had to be content with second place as Taunton Deane continued their late run to the line by thumping Warminster by eight wickets to take the crown, leaving Thornbury to fill third place. Chris Davidson, in his first season as Weston captain, was disappointed not to finish on a winning note after his side had occupied pole position for 14 weeks, but reflected on an excellent overall campaign for the club. He said: “At the start of the year our aim was to do better than last season (fourth) and we’ve achieved that. “It would have been nice to have won the title, but we’ve got no one to blame but ourselves, as we’ve had a bad six weeks with Taunton Deane and Thornbury both pushing very hard. “It’s been a good team effort from us... Andy Fear, Shabil Ahmed, Ed Brown and John Williams have all scored hundreds, while Sean Stringer has been absolutely brilliant with the ball.” Nick Stovold top-scored on 59 as Thornbury reached 249-9, Stringer, Sam Trego and Ben Main taking two wickets apiece. And Weston were then restricted to 210, home skipper Richard Trotman bowling off spin off two paces because of a leg injury to finish with 4-21 from five, while Dan Slade returned 3-31. The visitors’ total was boosted by an extras total of 53, including an eye-watering 37 wides. Trotman said: “We can hold our heads high this year. “We started the season aiming to finish halfway, so we’ve done well to finish third, and that’s a fair reflection of where we are. “This is a very young side and we’re now well equipped to push on next year.”

● Weston-super-Mare’s Ben Main sends down a delivery during the West of England Premier League defeat to Thornbury In Premier One, Bristol wrapped up with a 96-run home defeat of Taunton St Andrews to finish in third place behind champions Bath and Frocester. Gloucestershire’s Dan Housego (97) and opener Will Tavare (68) shared a second-wicket stand of 150 in the Bristol challenge of 284-9. And the combined efforts of skipper Will Rudge (3-29 from ten), Tavare (2-13), Mike Willmott (2-22) and Neil

Pollard (2-41) then dismissed Saints for 188. Downend had to work hard for a 29-run defeat of relegated Ilminster. Curtis Blakemore’s 121 (135 balls, 13 fours, five sixes) helped his side pile up 259-9 before skipper Matt Jackson (4-40 from ten) and Tawanda Mupariwa (3-45) restricted the visitors to 230. Keynsham, who drop straight back down to Premier Two, slipped by 81 runs at Bridgwater, despite Russ

Wakefield taking 3-41 and top-scoring on 45.

Westbury, Richard Wood bagging 4-22 from ten.

● Rockhampton warmed up for their big day at Lord’s next weekend in the National Village Cup with a 12-run win at Dumbleton in Glos & Wilts, James Williams hammering 133 and Rowan Cartlidge 77. Harry Webb (70) and skipper Craig Scully (61) paved the way for Chipping Sodbury’s 28-run victory at

● Wally Wright’s unbeaten 182 helped Winscombe chase down a target of 326 at Ilton in the Somerset division. Winscombe finish seventh, while Uphill Castle are fourth after a four-wicket home setback against Wellington. Top scorers for Uphill were Alex Winn (50) and Hayden Watts (46).

Bird rolls back the years to save Claverham Steve Hill epsport@b-nm.co.uk CLAVERHAM needed something special to wriggle out of relegation trouble against drop rivals Twyford House – and Paul Bird supplied it with a sensational performance. The former Somerset star had not bowled for six years because of the shoulder injury that ended his first-class career almost 20 years ago. But he was persuaded by skipper Roger Hooper to try his luck with Twyford at 61-1, needing 176 for the victory that would have made them safe in the WEPL Bristol & North Somerset Division. Bird responded by taking a wicket with his first ball – having Ross Sutton brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Matt Davis – before going on to finish with 6-25 from 9.1 overs. That effort saw Twyford buckle to 126 all out and a 49-run defeat that saw them finish bottom , one point behind Claverham. Skipper Roger Hooper said: “No one really gave us a chance because it looked impossible to make up those 16 points and, at the same time, stop Twyford getting any more than four points.” His plan – to secure maximum batting points and declare (to gain two bonus points in the event of a win), while losing as few wickets as possible – worked perfectly, with Ryan Thorpe hitting 54 plus Richard Horton and Bird both contributing 36. Claverham then had to nail down the victory and also deny Twyford batting points – step forward Bird. Hooper added: “I had one more ace up my sleeve... I had been badgering Paul all day to bowl, and said ‘just try your arm and see what happens’. “To get a wicket first ball was unbelievable. He was getting the ball in really good areas and once the ad-

renalin started pumping there was no way I was ever going to get him off !” ● Newcomers Chew Magna made it nine in a row with an 89-run home defeat of Bristol West Indians & Phoenix to seal the title, edging Lansdown by a point. Richie Ricketts’ 109, plus Dave Lawrence (48) and Stuart Watson (43) helped Chew declare at 267-8 before the visitors folded to 178, Ken Mondair (4-30) and skipper Mike Denning (3-22) rounding off a summer to remember for a side that lost their first two games. Lansdown thumped Stapleton by 112 runs, while Winterbourne finished third after a four-wicket triumph at Congresbury, Tom Carter following up his 108 last weekend with an unbeaten 139. Clevedon clinched the Bristol & Somerset title and a place in Premier Two with a 117-run home defeat of Frenchay. Wayne Kylander top-scored with 95 before bagging 3-25 from ten overs, whilst there was also a return of 3-22 by former England and Somerset paceman Andy Caddick. Frenchay finished third bottom, ahead of Taunton who went down by six wickets at Old Bristolians Westbury despite opener Tom Abell’s unbeaten 150. Runners-up Bedminster’s disappointing end-of-season form continued with a ten-wicket reverse at Bishopston, for whom skipper John Stilwell (3-5) and Mark Coombes (90 not out) starred. Brislington wrapped up third place with a 94-run home success over Knowle, Paul Hawken hitting 77 and Jon Rogers claiming 3-16. ● Officials from the WEPL and feeder leagues covering Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire will convene tomorrow to confirm promotions and relegations.

legation with a crushing 173-run success at Bradley Stoke, leapfrogging Nailsea, who lost by 71 runs against Bristol Asians and suffer a second successive relegation. Wayne Passmore finished with 5-40 as Dyrham reached 238-8, but the home side struggled from the start with the bat and were shot out for just 66. Bristol Asians reached 173 all out at Nailsea, whose reply faded to 102 as news filtered through of Dyrham’s win. Champions YMCA ended their campaign on a high note with a seven-wicket win at Hanham, who were dismissed for 115. Hitesh Shah was YMCA’s most successful bowler with 3-34, while open-

er Owen Hewlett helped steer his side to another victory with 39. Hampset began the day fourth from bottom in Division Two, but finished in the bottom two after a 19-run reverse away to drop rivals Woodpeckers, who pulled clear of trouble. Opener Nick Curtis (84) made a crucial contribution in his side’s total of 210-8, before Jason Robinson (3-40 from 12 overs), Tim Britton (3-54) and Andy Pope (2-54) shared the spoils. West United also made themselves safe with a 230-run thumping of relegated St George, Ashish Shinde (140) and Ibhad Paresh (78) powering their side to a massive 389-9. Salauddin Ahmed then produced a

tremendous spell of 3-10 from ten overs as Saints were dismissed for 159. Frampton Cotterell clinched the Division Three title with a 66-run success at St Mary Redcliffe, where Ross Shorland (80) and skipper Jimmy Dickinsn (6-39) played key roles. And that result meant Frampton held off Abbots Leigh , who were 180-run victors at home to Bohemians. The Division Four crown went to pacesetters Bristol Lions, 53-run home victors against Churchways , thanks to three wickets apiece for Pitigala and Adambaragie. Carsons Mangotsfield finished second, despite overwhelming Old Caths by ten wickets, with Glen Cambridge unbeaten on 56.

LONG Ashton secured another season in Division One of the Globe Sports Bristol & District League with a nerve-tingling two-wicket home win against promoted Old Down, which pulled them clear of the relegation zone. The villagers began the day with an average that was 0.6 of a point behind third from bottom Bristol Sri Lankans, who slipped up by 100 runs at Hambrook. The Sri Lankans were bowled out for 124, missing a batting bonus point by just one run. And failing to claim that solitary point meant they finished with an average for the season

of 12.928 ... compared to Long Ashton’s 12.937. Neil Maud (5-39 from 12 overs) and Kane Duffy (3-19 from six overs) reduced Old Down to 153 all out, before Ben Taylor (47) and Duffy (33) dominated Long Ashton’s nervous reply, Dave Gardner bagging 6-32 from eight overs. Peter Wheeler, meanwhile, dominated Hambrook’s total of 224-7 with an unbeaten 57, Musamil taking 4-50. Lee Dyer then struck with 6-33 from 7.4 overs, including the wicket of skipper Ali Qureshi for 45, as the visitors missed out on the point that would have made them safe. It was so inspiring to hear Karen’s speech at Business 4 Sport seminar

EPB-E01-S3

I

HAD a phone call out of the blue recently from a chap called David Smith. He asked me if I would be interested in speaking at a business seminar. I was a little taken aback, because apart from giving a best man’s speech, and saying a few words at end-of-season presentations, I have had no experience of this type of thing. I asked David what topic he required me to talk about. He replied: “Your favourite subject – yourself !” I do like people with a sense of humour. He did eventually explain that somebody from the Football Association, who had been booked to attend and talk about grassroots sport, was unable to make the function. David said

Dave Payne Writes for the Green ’Un that he was really clutching at straws to get someone, and then thought of me. Those carefully-chosen, charming words helped me make my decision. The seminar was hosted by the company Business 4 Sport. What I can gather is that they host these events for business people who are interested in helping sponsor individual or

team sports. The main speaker that evening was Karen Butler, a paralympian who has appeared at several Olympic Games, taking part in the shooting event. She spoke very eloquently and passionately about her sport. She explained how hard it was for her to keep competing at major sporting events while holding down a full-time job, yet receiving hardly any funding. I have to say her speech was very inspiring, and I hope she is successful in gaining some sponsorship, which will help keep her competing for many years to come. My speech was pretty low-key by comparison. The knowledge I have on grassroots sport is limited and basic. I warbled on about when I was a lad

how we used to put jumpers down for goal posts, and could only dream about playing on Astroturf surfaces that the youngsters of today get to play on. I also carried on talking to anyone still listening, about how some sports during my time growing up, including tennis and golf, were so elitist. There was a tennis court literally yards from my boyhood home, which was for the use of members only. The gate was always locked during the day, probably to stop our sort from playing. Along with a couple of my pals, we would regularly cut a small gap in the wire fencing enabling us to play during days in the school holidays. It would have made a lot more sense if they would have left the gate

open during the day, when the members were at work allowing us children to play, without resulting to criminal damage. It was the same when it came to golf. Unlike these days, I didn’t know anyone who was a member of a golf club. My mates and I would walk to the pitch-and-putt course at Ashton Court, and sneak on to play. We assumed for years that a golf course only had 12 holes, the reason being our round started on the seventh tee, out of site of the clubhouse. I can remember one lad from around our way that was brilliant at an elitist sport – water polo. There was talk of him going to an Olympic games, unfortunately for him though, his horse drowned!
