Harewood’s presence in THIS proverbial game of two halves will no doubt provide Bristol City head coach Sean O’Driscoll with much food for thought. A confirmed advocate of possession-based football, the Midlander adopted his preferred Plan A during the opening 45 minutes. When it failed to yield a way through a packed Colchester defence, he was forced to revert to Plan B, ten minutes into the second half. Marlon Harewood came off the bench to provide City’s attack with a much-needed focal point and his team-mates responded by embracing a more direct approach in a spirited quest to cancel out Matthew Taylor’s headed goal for the U’s. Although O’Driscoll remains committed to Plan A, even he must acknowledge the effectiveness of Plan B in confronting opponents who were hell-bent on putting men behind the ball to protect a slender lead. A pattern is emerging in games played at Ashton Gate this season and tactics adopted first by Shrewsbury and now by Colchester will conceivably become the norm for teams visiting BS3. Quite content to let City have the ball in their own half, Joe Dunne’s side retreated in two banks of four and invited the Robins to try and break them down. If the idea was to frustrate the home side and then catch them out with swiftly-launched counter-attacks, it worked up to a point. Having soaked up pressure and demonstrated only limited attacking intent during the opening 25 minutes, Colchester broke out and forged a lead against the run of play, on-loan Bradford defender Taylor rising high at the far post to head in Luke Garbutt’s excellent out-swinging centre from the left. All of which rendered City’s task more difficult still. Now with something tangible to hold onto, the U’s made no attempt to disguise their intention of defending in numbers from deep inside their own half. Determined to adhere to their patient passing game, City were presented with a major problem to solve; how to translate superior possession into clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities. Recourse to statistical analysis will no doubt reveal a high percentage of completed passes by the Robins in the first half. But they were ponderous in

their approach at times and, slow to move the ball forwards, were unable to hurt the visitors in the areas where it really mattered. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Sam Baldock both sent first-time shots off-target, but U’s keeper Sam Walker was not seriously tested until Harewood’s arrival heralded a switch to Plan B. A physical presence in and around the penalty area, the former Aston Villa and West Ham forward encour-

6 ● The number of goals scored by City striker Sam Baldock this season aged his team-mates to go from back to front more quickly now that they had a target to aim at. His arrival freed-up Emmanuel-Thomas to play between the lines and run at defenders, while affording the mobile Baldock a level of support that transformed him into a genuine threat. Baldock’s sixth goal of the season, laid on a plate for him by substitute Stephen McLaughlin, and a series of near-misses thereafter, proved the effectiveness of a more direct style. Had a curling shot from the rejuvenated Emmanuel-Thomas and a close-range header from Baldock not flashed agonisingly wide of goal, we would now be discussing City’s first League win of the season. Indeed, City’s second-half improvement surely begs the question why does O’Driscoll not simply abandon Plan A and adopt Plan B from the outset of the next game? The answer is simple; Harewood is

more effective when used as an impact substitute and O’Driscoll has still to find a way of including the big striker in the same starting line-up as Emmanuel-Thomas and Baldock without compromising his team’s defensive integrity. Defending remains an issue and a mix-up between centre-backs Aden Flint and Derrick Williams presented U’s forward Jabo Ibehre with an opportunity to win the game at the death. Fortunately for City, Williams recovered in magnificent fashion to execute a goal-saving tackle in the nick of time. A winning goal for Colchester would have represented rough justice indeed, given the manner in which the Robins went about cancelling out a deficit for the second home game in succession. Rather than allow themselves to be cowed by a high-pressure situation, O’Driscoll’s charges responded in a manner that can only bode well for the future, displaying bravery on the ball and running themselves to standstill in a common cause. The Ashton Gate crowd responded and played their part in a second-half recovery that suggests that elusive first win is just around the corner. One of only four clubs yet to register a league victory this season – Bolton, Sheffield Wednesday and Accrington Stanley are also still waiting – City have nevertheless drawn more games than they have lost and are showing genuine signs of improvement. Colchester boss Dunne best summed it up in the post-match press conference when he said: “Bristol City are close. They are really close to getting it right.” Yes, there is frustration, but the players must believe their glass is half full and take heart from this performance as they prepare to meet Port Vale in the Potteries next weekend.

Match reaction FAR from allowing his Bristol City league debut to go to his head, young goalkeeper Elliot Parish headed for home and a date with hit TV series X-Factor after helping his side come from behind to salvage a point at Ashton Gate. Having finally dislodged Frankie Fielding, the former Aston Villa and Cardiff stopper does not want to give Robins head coach Sean O’Driscoll cause to change his mind ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Port Vale. O’Driscoll said: “The shirt is

number two. But I’m an ambitious player and I want to keep stepping forward. “I saw the number one shirt and wanted it. It’s a competitive industry. We are all playing for one another’s shirts and everybody knows that. That is checklist number one sorted – now I have to do the business to make sure I stay in the team. “I need to have a good week and continue to work hard in order to make it difficult for the gaffer. “ I’ve done that so far and, now

I’ve got the shirt, it’s up to me to keep it for a long time.” Apart from gathering a couple of long-range shots, Parish had little to do against a Colchester attack that rarely threatened. He confided: “I thought it went quite well for me – I wasn’t too busy and I’d like to keep it that way. “It crossed my mind that we were 20 minutes in and I’d only touched the ball a couple of times. “I’d like to keep it that way, because it makes me look good. “The lads were a lot better today

and I think this was definitely a step in the right direction. You could tell that by the way the fans responded at the end.” Colchester manager Joe Dunne felt a draw was a fair result in the end. He said: “We had the better of the first half and they came on strong and had the momentum in the second half. We allowed them to have the ball in certain areas and they looked to be dangerous on the counter-attack. I think our tactics were spot on.”

Fan’s view with Matthew Withers I’M starting to wonder what head coach Sean O'Driscoll takes Bristol City fans for. He comes across as pretty dour, has little personality and has made few attempts to engage with fans. All of that I can take with the belief, that he is putting the building blocks in place, that will see my team return to the Championship, much stronger and able to establish itself. Please, however, do not put words into our mouths and don't take us for muppets. This week we have had to listen to how this young City side must learn to cope with the pressure of expectations. City's head coach said of the Colchester game: “It’s a game the whole city expects to go and win 5-0 or 6-0." That follows on from his comments that we expected City to roll over Shrewsbury. Let me tell you Mr O'Driscoll, the vast majority of fans who have watched your sides go 18 league games without a win have re-evaluated what we expect and no one would have expected us to score six on Saturday, even against a Colchester side without 11 first-team players. As a relegated team with some quality players on the books, it's true I would expect us to be beating teams like Shrewsbury and Colchester. O’Driscoll will point to the possession that we had in both games, but in truth how much of a threat did we carry in both? How many saves did the opposition goalkeeper have to make? Possession is all very good if there is an end product, at the moment I'm not seeing it. It's great to have the ball, but you have to move it with purpose and pace. We play it across the back line three or four times and then launch it forward. Colchester, Shrewsbury and the Swindon game in between, the opposition were there for the taking and I wonder if someone more motivational could have achieved better results. I said at the start of the season that our priority had to be to make a strong start and ensure that we established ourselves in League One and then look up. We are at this moment in time struggling to do that and there is a real danger that we face a relegation battle for yet another season. The chairman and directors are quiet and at the moment I really think that the club has lost its way. So what's the answer? Some will call for O’Driscoll's head, but I personally at this stage, don't think that's the answer. When the side puts it together they are very good and I do think that a win will do the side the world of good. You also have to say that changing managers every season is not going to lead to stability. However, you cannot carry on a winless run and not expect repercussions. City have to start with an orthodox front two. Marlon Harewood has caused problems when he has come on and it must be worth starting with Sam Baldock next week away at Port Vale.

there to fight for and, if he comes in on Monday morning larging it up, I’ll have to think again. “You can never tell with players. They can have one game and suddenly think they’ve made it. I can’t see that with Elliot, because he’s a really level-headed lad.” Sure enough, Parish was keeping both feet firmly rooted to the ground after an impressive League debut for the Robins. He told the Bristol Post: “When you look at me and Frank, I think it’s fair to say I came here as a

Fan’s view with Dennis Payter AT last we are up and running with our first away point of the season and it was no surprise that Matt Harrold got the goal. I have always felt that our success this season would rest very much on the return to full fitness of Harrold as strikers with the knack of scoring goals are worth their weight in gold. Last season, we were saying how much we were missing Matty and now that he has got two in two games I hope his season, and the team’s, is now fully up and running. Until Friday night our solitary goal at Exeter was all we had to show for away days. Roots Hall, particularly on a Friday night, has never been a happy hunting ground for Rovers, although I do recall we once secured promotion there with a point in the Smash and Grab days under Don Megson. It was difficult to tell on Friday night if Harrold’s partnership with Ryan Brunt could be an ongoing success, but it certainly has potential and perhaps represents the best pairing in the club at the moment. Our line-up at Southend looked pretty solid for an away game with Ollie Norburn wide on one flank and Andy Bond on the other. That is OK if we can achieve a draw in every away game and win at home. At least we didn’t look fragile at the back, didn’t concede that early goal, and gave as good as we got for the first half hour. We inevitably came under pressure after scoring, but at least we didn’t buckle as the game hotted up and the tackles flew in. John Ward’s line-up got what he wanted with the point, but now I feel we need more pace out wide at the Memorial Stadium and hope that Ellis Harrison for one, gets a start on Saturday. Norburn playing wide at Southend became the latest in a long line of midfielders to take up that position since David Pipe left the club and he really doesn’t have the pace to slot in there. I suppose the argument is that Norburn and Bond can “hold the fort”, while the in-form Michael Smith and Lee Brown go rampaging down the wings. Once again a goal came from a Smith run and cross for Harrold’s header in much the way Brown set up the striker against Hartlepool, so even I will be happy if it works and we keep picking up points. It is about time we settled in the top half of the league. Saturday won’t be easy against in-form Fleetwood Town who are setting a hot pace near the top of the table. Fleetwood? Many don’t know where that is and when you Google the football club all you get at first is Fleetwood Mac. So, again we are playing a small town club. Now is the time to push on up the league and send our visitors further down that Google list.

Southend United vs Bristol Rovers | Roots Hall, Friday, September 27

Rovers earn their first away point of the season PERHAPS the most telling thing John Ward said as he talked of satisfaction after watching his side secure their first away point of the season was the “decisions” he’d had to make to finally get it. The manager admitted after last weekend’s draw against Hartlepool that his side had failed to live up to even the modest expectations he had set for them and, in the days since, it seems, Ward has finally got to a point where, perhaps, even he feels enough is enough and some things have to change. Maybe, Ward, a man well-respected for the fairness by which he goes about his business, has been guilty of going out of his way to be accommodating to the squad as a whole when considering which side he shall put out on any given Saturday. Injuries to key men over the first few weeks of the season has allowed him to do that, but that policy has yet to yield repayment in positive results and with a number of players now seemingly fit and ready to return, it

seems that Ward is ready to exhibit a ruthless streak in pursuit of improvement. The likelihood is that Ward is now forming a strong opinion on the make-up of his most competitive side and that, as a result, an unlucky few may well have to wait patiently for the opportunity to get back into his thoughts. Of those “decisions” the Ward talked of after the game on Friday night, the one that now seems to have youngster Tom Lockyer pencilled in as John-Joe O’Toole’s first-choice central midfield partner was inter-

esting when the wealth of options the manager has at his disposal in that area are considered. Competition for places in this area looks set to intensify over the coming weeks after Seanan Clucas – a particular favourite of Ward’s last season – made a brief appearance from the bench on Friday night following a seven-month injury-enforced absence, while Ollie Clarke, who also made a positive impression on the manager in the final few games of the previous campaign – is said to be nearing fitness after a hamstring problem. An embarrassment of riches is further highlighted by the fact that Oliver Norburn and Andy Bond – both central midfielders by trade – were deployed in wide areas at Roots Hall. Elsewhere, Ward was allowed the chance to see Matt Harrold and Ryan Brunt paired together in attack for the first time and, while admitting that they need time and games after spells out of action because of injury, one suspects that the manager will see this as his first-choice partnership at the top of the team more often than not over the coming weeks. That the Rovers boss opted to replace the tiring Brunt with Ellis Harrison, who has predominantly played on the wing since being introduced to the side at the turn of the year, was also a slight surprise on a night where Ward had the opportunity to thrust more recognised strikers into action from the bench. Ward confirmed it is an option he intends to explore further over the

next few games; Harrison’s raw pace to trouble tiring central defenders in the later stages of a game, perhaps, the reason why he looks set to edge ahead of the likes of David Clarkson, Eliot Richards and Mitch Harding at the moment. Harrison’s redeployment also suggests that Ward looks likely, for the time being anyway, to sacrifice flair and creativity in favour of work-rate in wider areas – although the determination of full-backs Michael Smith and Lee Brown, who are currently leading the way in terms of assists this season, to burst into forward areas at least offers the manager opportunity to temporarily dispense with out-and-out wingers. If Friday night’s performance at Roots Hall, meanwhile, is a barometer by which to measure the success or otherwise of some of these “decisions”, then those who were in attendance would probably agree that Ward got it right on this occasion. Some may well have been disappointed that Rovers were unable to go on and claim their first victory on the road since a 4-2 success at Dagenham & Redbridge on Easter Monday after Harrold opened the scoring with a towering header to convert a Smith cross from close-range in the 51st minute. Few, however, would have been unhappy with a point if it had been offered beforehand considering the disappointing way Rovers had gone about their business in their last two engagements on the road – even if Parkes and O’Toole could have secured three points when offered dif-

● Rovers’ players celebrate Matt Harrold’s go ficult one-on-one chances in the dying stages only to be denied by Southend skipper John White and goalkeeper Daniel Bentley respectively. That would have been harsh on Phil Brown’s side, however, who probably deserved share of the spoils. “It’s a start,” Ward replied when asked about the improvement he had garnered from his players in the last two games. They’ll need to build on it if they are to emerge with anything tangible from a game against promotion-hopefuls Fleetwood Town at the Memorial Stadium next Saturday. Match reaction MATT Harrold scored a goal to help Bristol Rovers claim their first away point of the season – but then explained that the overriding feeling in the changing room at Roots Hall after the final whistle was one of disappointment. Harrold opened the scoring with a towering 51st-minute header against Southend United – one of his former clubs – on Friday night to raise hopes that a run of seven games without a league victory away from the Memorial Stadium was on course to be ended. Southend, however, claimed a share of the spoils from a close-run

game after Kevan Hurst restored parity with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area before Rovers spurned late chances to win the game off the boots of Tom Parkes and John-Joe O’Toole “A point is not the end of the world,” Harrold said. “It’s just we had a few chances at the end and three points would have been lovely. “That would have really got us going after what was a good second-half performance against Hartlepool last weekend. We are frustrated, but we feel we can go home with our heads held high after producing quite a good performance.

● Rovers’ Lee Brown

We sat back a bit for five or ten minutes after we scored the goal and we probably got punished for that. Southend are a decent side, though, and it is a good point – even if we are a bit disappointed in the changing room.” He added: “We have to look at it as a little step. We know we haven’t been good enough away from home. We don’t need people to tell us that. It was a much more united performance and there was maybe that little bit more togetherness to really dig in for a point.” Harrold was paired up front with Ryan Brunt on the first occasion that

Jersey vs Bristol | St Peter’s, Saturday, September 28

High-tempo Bristol give Jersey a torrid opening IF there had been any lingering uncertainty about how Andy Robinson and Sean Holley want their Bristol side to play, the blueprint was provided in the opening 17 minutes at St Peter. Robinson and Holley’s vision for how Bristol should be taking on opponents was rolled out, almost to a tee, for the first half of the first half, as they effectively put the game out of Jersey’s reach thanks to their pace and movement. Bristol started at an incredible speed. Thanks to their high tempo from the first whistle, they scored three early tries to lead 19-0. Jersey appeared shell-shocked as Ruki Tipuna and Tristan Roberts pulled the strings, keeping the hosts on the back foot for what must have been an extremely uncomfortable opening period for them. Jersey had beaten Bedford in their last outing – but were blown away by a combination of Bristol’s physicality, invention and cutting edge. For those first 17 minutes, Bristol were as good as they have been for a season or two – sharp, incisive, bold. One problem with starting so brightly, however, is that it creates an unrealistic expectation that the pace and fluency can be maintained for the remainder of the match – and, understandably, Jersey clawed their way back into the game, even if Bristol never looked like anything but victors. After their initial three-try burst, they added a fourth through Ryan Edwards – after Tipuna’s opener and two from Roberts – to secure their second straight try-scoring bonus point. But, from a lead of 26-3, the final scoreline shows that, while Bristol are improving, they are yet to find a way to put sides to bed. Tipuna hit the nail on the head when he said they are still striving to deliver a “killer blow” to opponents. But given this was only Robinson’s eighth competitive game in charge – and Holley’s third with the club – Bristol were never going to be as polished as they will need to be in May and June.

This is a work in progress – even if the opening 17 minutes on Saturday suggested that progress is likely to be swift. Director of rugby Robinson said: “I’m pleased with the way we started the game. I thought in the first 20 minutes, to score the three tries and get the points on the board that we did, was very pleasing. “Jersey came back into the game and they worked hard – and a lot of sides wouldn’t have been able to get back into the game like that. Just after half-time we scored another great try – and I thought the movement of the ball, and the shape we had, were very good.” The game was not even two minutes old when Tipuna, who underlined Bristol’s attacking fearlessness by tapping and going whenever the opportunity arose, started and finished the move for the opening try. His quick tap was backed up with excellent support from his team-mates, and the scrum-half went over from close range. He was at it again five minutes later – tapping and going – and played in Roberts, who withstood the attempts of a couple of Jersey players to halt him, and scored in the corner, too far wide to be able to convert his own try. Tipuna and Roberts combined again for the third Bristol try, with the New Zealander chipping ahead, getting the bounce of the ball as he tussled with a Jersey player, then hacking ahead twice more, before finding Roberts – via Glen Townson – for a superb try.

“I saw a bit of space, put a grubber in, and we both had a nudge at the ball – and I came up with it,” said Tipuna. “There was some good support play from big GT – and Trist finished it off, so we’ve got numbers flooding through, which is the good thing.” Bristol had started in such a relentless fashion that they were surely going to hit a wall at some stage. As Robinson acknowledged: “I think we were hanging quite a bit – the lungs were burning – in the second 20 minutes of the first half, and we made a couple of errors.” Iain Grieve saw yellow for taking out his opposite number at a line-out – but Jersey managed only three points while the flanker was off the field. Bristol wrapped up the bonus point three minutes after half-time when Roberts passed back inside to George Watkins, who powered through the middle before finding Edwards, who dived over flamboyantly to seal the additional point. Jersey, having been blown away early on, showed commendable character to fight back as they did – scoring first through Ed Dawson, after Niall O’Connor’s cross-kick, and then through replacement prop Nick Selway. In between those tries, however, Bristol spurned an excellent chance to score what would have been one of the team tries of the season, but on another positive note, they welcomed back Bryan Rennie after almost a year out with a cruciate ligament injury.

Key incidents BRISTOL effectively wrapped up victory over Jersey in the opening 17 minutes at St Peter, blowing their hosts away with an early three-try blitz. The visitors crossed in the second, seventh and 17th minutes, before sealing their second successive try bonus point in the third minute of the second half. Ruki Tipuna scored the early opener, before two tries from Tristan Roberts, and Ryan Edwards’ bonus-point clinching score. Tipuna, making his first start of the season after two lively appearances from the bench, typified Bristol’s early attacking gusto. He ran the first penalty of the match, and when

Bristol’s initial pressure was repelled, he picked up and went over from close range. Another quick tap penalty from Tipuna launched the move that led to Bristol’s second try, five minutes after he had opened the scoring. He ran the penalty and passed to fly-half Roberts, who held off a couple of would-be tacklers to score in the cor ner. The Bristol pressure continued – much in the way it had in the opening quarter against London Scottish six days earlier, albeit with much greater early rewards. Tipuna chipped ahead, was beaten in the initial race to the ball, but saw the defender fumble – and then

hacked on twice, before collecting and passing to the supporting Glen Townson, who in turn fed Roberts for a superb try. Roberts’ conversion saw Bristol into a 19-0 lead. Bristol flanker Iain Grieve saw yellow when he was deemed to have taken out an opponent at a line-out – but Jersey’s numerical advantage delivered them only three points, via a Niall O’Connor penalty. Bristol led 19-3 at the break – but that became 26-3, and crucially saw them chalk up a second straight bonus point, when Edwards scored an excellent try three minutes after the break. Roberts passed back inside to George Watkins, who marked his return

W:11.3939cm H:5.6936cm from injury by bursting up-field, and passing to fellow winger Edwards at exactly the right time, with the Welshman finishing off the move. Jersey hit back when O’Connor’s inch perfect cross-kick was collected by Ed Dawson, who scored out wide, before home flanker James Voss was carried off on a stretcher and departed for hospital in a neck brace. During a lengthy delay while he was treated, the rain began to poor heavily, and the game lost some of its rhythm upon its resumption. As the match fizzled out a little, Jersey added a second try in the closing minutes, when their 21-stone prop Nick Selway burrowed over from close range.

FA Cup

Slick second-half show puts Weston through Basingstoke

1

Weston-super-Mare

3

WESTON went into the hat for the third qualifying round of the FA Cup following a comfortable win in Hampshire, as the Seagulls beat their fellow Skrill South opponents for the second time this season. The home side shaded the first-half exchanges, but Weston grew in confidence after the break and in the end were easy winners. Basingstoke started well, forcing two corners in as many opening minutes, and they came close on 11 minutes when Weston keeper Luke Purnell had to dive low to his left to deal with Robbie Matthews’ powerful free-kick. As Weston got into the game, Ashley Kington went close with a curling effort on 17 minutes. They did even better a minute later when, from a good build-up, involving

Chas Hemmings, Kane Ingram and Kington, home goalkeeper Louis Wells spilled a low cross and Naby Diallo was on hand to score the opening goal. Two minutes later, Basingstoke drew level when, from their third corner, Matt Partridge knocked the ball past Purnell. Weston regained the lead two minutes into the second half when they were awarded a free-kick a yard outside the home penalty area. Hemmings’ superb free-kick, which took a slight deflection, left Wells wrong-footed. Basingstoke brought on former Weston favourite Manny Williams, and he tested Purnell with several efforts. Weston sealed the win on 77 minutes when Wells could only parry Kington’s powerful effort and skipper Ben Kirk headed in the rebound from a couple of yards. Weston meet Chard Town in the first round of the Somerset Premier Cup tomorrow evening (7.45pm).

Stearn strikes to seal it for Bath Bath City

2

Gosport Borough

0

DAVE Pratt’s first-half goal and a late second from substitute Ross Stearn sent Bath City through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup. Their first win over Gosport Borough in four attempts – and £4,500 in prize money – was well deserved on the basis of their first-half performance, although there was some growing anxiety before Stearn finally killed the visitors off. Following last weekend's dismal home defeat to Dover, Bath head coach Lee Howells made four changes to his starting XI and switched to a 3-5-2 formation. Out went Stearn, Ben Adelsbury, Noah Keats and Will Salmon, and in came Sekani Simpson and Aaron Brown as wing-backs. Joe Burnell came into midfield and striker Elliott Chamberlain, who returned to Bath on loan from Exeter on Friday, partnered Pratt in attack. Bath made a bright start, with Pratt firing into the side-netting from Simpson's clever pass and Chamberlain not quite able to fully connect with a volley. But the hosts did not have to wait too long before their pressure paid off. Andy Gallinagh launched a long ball forward, which found Pratt in acres of space. His first shot was

brilliantly saved by Gareth Barfoot, but the City striker coolly steered home the rebound. Bath should have doubled their lead midway through the half when Gosport failed on numerous occasions to clear a corner and the ball dropped to Dan Ball, who smashed his volley over from eight yards. Chamberlain also failed to make full contact again from Josh Low's inviting cross. The visitors had to wait until the 51st minute for their first attempt of note, with Andrew Forbes left unmarked at a free-kick, but volleying against the crossbar. Bath were not at the same level they were in the first period, but had a sniff of a chance midway through the half when visiting keeper Barfoot fumbled the ball at Pratt's feet and was grateful when the striker's second touch knocked it back into his hands. Brown's through-ball then sent Pratt into space, but his shot was comfortably saved. The inability to grab a killer second goal was starting to cause anxiety on the terraces and another Bath change saw Stearn come on for Low with ten minutes remaining. And the substitute finally put the tie to bed with four minutes remaining. A mistake by full-back Brett Poate left Stearn with a clear sight of goal and he kept his nerve to lift the ball over the advancing Barfoot.

Mangotsfield’s cup run is over Eastleigh

4

Mangotsfield United

0

MANGOTSFIELD'S FA Cup adventure ended at the Silver Lake Stadium as they were brushed aside by the Conference South leaders. The visitors almost took a second-minute lead, but Alex Kite snatched at the close-range chance and his effort was blocked. Three minutes later, Eastleigh

went ahead when Jai Reason scored from a few yards out. Glen Sougham struck the second goal in the 31st minute when he side-footed home from eight yards. Stuart Fleetwood scored the third goal in the 42nd minute, at which point Mangotsfield were reduced to ten men when Jamie Reid received a second yellow card. Eastleigh continued to dominate in the second half, but were restricted to one more goal – an 83rd-minute strike from Sam Wilson.

Yate on the glory trail again after superb fightback Yate Town

Bideford

1

YATE moved closer to another appearance in the first round of the FA Cup with an excellent second qualifying-round victory over higher-division Bideford. The Devon side, unbeaten in the Calor Southern League Premier Division, took a first-half lead, but the hosts came from behind to progress to the next round. Bideford forced the pace early on, with Craig Duff firing wide of the target and Owen Howe having a shot cleared away by Mitch Harrison. Yate’s best chance of the opening period fell to Lewis Haldane, whose

shot was saved by Steve Oliver after he was played in by Ricky Hulbert. However, the visitors went ahead just prior to half-hour mark when Howe bundled Joe Chandler off the ball and went clear to beat goalkeeper Martin Horsell. The home side responded after the break, with Oliver having to tip over a Hulbert shot and James Harmer lobbing the ball just over the crossbar. Midway through the second half, though, Haldane equalised for Town when he converted Harmer’s low cross following an exchange of passes with Ross Staley. Yate snatched victory with time almost up, as Harrison crossed into the Bideford goalmouth and Harmer managed to turn the ball beyond goalkeeper Oliver.

Fortune and McNab fire Clevedon to victory Clevedon Town

Sholing

CLAYTON Fortune and Ross McNab were on target as Clevedon beat former Southern League rivals Sholing in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. The visitors came close to an early opener when Barry Mason’s cross just evaded Lee Wort. Instead, it was the home side that

forged ahead on 20 minutes. Sam Teale’s free-kick was only half-cleared by the Sholing defence and Fortune drove the ball back into the net from the edge of the penalty area. Clevedon manager Mickey Bell, pictured, than saw his side double their lead seven minutes before half-time. Joe Flurry turned his marker and crossed for McNab to

knock the ball into the net. Sholing tried to respond in the second half, but they looked just as likely to concede again as Adie Adams, Reeko Best and Teale all threatened to increase Clevedon’s advantage. Wort had the best chance to cut the deficit, but once he passed up that opportunity it left the hosts just two more wins away from a place in the first round proper of the competition.

MIKE Rimmer struck the winning goal eight minutes from time as Brislington shocked Truro in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. The Toolstation League side, who play two divisions below the Cornish outfit, twice fell behind before stunning the Southern League side. Cody Cooke gave Truro the lead with a spectacular tenth-minute opener, but Neikell Plummer headed the home side level from a corner 11 minutes later. Brislington were level for just two minutes, though, as Neil Slateford put the visitors back in front following a rebound off the goalkeeper. The hosts equalised for a second time eight minutes into the second half – again from a corner – as Danny Barwood pounced. Eight minutes from time, Brislington stunned the visitors with a winner as Alex Lambert pulled the ball back and Rimmer fired into the net.

Thriller down at the Farm Bristol Manor Farm

Bridgwater Town

KYE Holly’s late penalty earned Bristol Manor Farm a FA Cup second qualifying round replay at Bridgwater tomorrow night. The Toolstation League side raced into a three-goal lead inside quarter of an hour before Town hit back with four second-half goals. George Brimson headed an eighth-minute opener for Manor Farm and Kris Miller headed an own goal to double the advantage just one minute later. The hosts were three goals clear a matter of minutes later as Pete Shepherd found the net with an acrobatic effort. Bridgwater responded in style as a Joe Bushin double and one from Dean Griffiths levelled matters by the hour mark. Manor Farm hit the woodwork twice, only for the visitors to break away and score through Mitchell Page. However, Holly’s penalty, after a foul on Will Hailston, set up a replay.

Bristol Telephones had no answer to leaders Gala Wilton, who ran out 5-0 winners with Lee Allen scoring a hat-trick, including one from the penalty spot. Brett James and Luke Halliday were also on target for the Gloucester side, while Telephones had two men sent off in the second half. Longlevens kept pace with Gala Wilton at the top courtesy of a 6-3 home victory over Hanham, having

Rockleaze scored three goals in four first-half minutes as they beat Berkeley 3-2, Oshane West striking twice in two minutes before Sam Andrews added the third. Kingswood and Bristol Academy drew 1-1, Adam Eldridge scoring a fine opener for the hosts only for Marcus Thatcher to equalise.

SHIREHAMPTON bounced back from defeat at Premier Division leaders Nailsea United with a 3-1 home win against Street Reserves. Scott Bamford gave Shirehampton a 29th-minute lead from the penalty spot after he had been fouled. Three minutes before half-time, Tony Beacham set up Dan Spice to score the second goal. The third and best Shirehampton goal came five minutes from time when Martin Cook curled in a free-kick. Cutters Friday gave a spirited display at second-placed Minehead, but

were eventually beaten 3-2. Guy Burns put Minehead in front just before the break, but Roy Albert levelled early in the second half. A 75th-minute penalty from Jack Groves-Furse gave Minehead the lead again, only for Jordan Porter to capitalise on a defensive mix-up to equalise in the 89th minute. Burns, though, had the final say when he scored from a free-kick to win it for Minehead. Nailsea United had a 2-0 home win against Fry Club, while fourth-placed Stockwood Green beat Bridgwater Town Reserves 3-0.

Ryan Dovell equalised for Bridport before half-time. Tom Richardson put the hosts ahead and Sam Filkins saved a Huxley penalty before Dempsey’s late leveller. Larkhall Athletic retained their place at the top of the table, despite being held to a 1-1 draw at lowly Ilfracombe. Stan Paxton broke the deadlock for the Devon side 20 minutes from time, but Jamie Lyons fired the equaliser for the league leaders just five minutes later. Gillingham are level on points with Larkhall following their 2-0 home win over Heng rove, Jack Vallis and Gary Bowles scoring inside the final 15 minutes. Super League heartache for valiant Vixens Liverpool Ladies

BRISTOL had gone into this winner-takes-all encounter insisting they were in a no-lose situation. The visitors were already guaranteed at least runners-up spot in the FA Women’s Super League and, consequently, a UEFA Champions League place next year. Yet, you only had to look at the heartbroken expressions on the players’ faces as they headed back to the visitors’ dressing room following the final whistle to realise how much this one-sided defeat had hurt the Vixens. Bristol went into the final game of a remarkable campaign unbeaten in their previous six away matches – including a memorable 4-3 win at Doncaster in their previous outing, having fought back from three goals down. But the challenge of overhauling a powerful and uncompromising Liverpool team proved too much, as the Merseyside outfit showed they were in no mood to relinquish top spot. Uncharacteristically for a team who had netted 30 times in 13 WSL outings, the Vixens rarely looked like finding the net as Liverpool secured the crown by a five-point margin, thanks to Louise Fors’ first-half penalty and a strike from Katrin Omarsdottir after the break. At least the English domestic title has gone somewhere other than Arsenal for the first time in more than a decade – and most neutrals would recognise that has to be a good thing for the women’s game. Bristol looked nervy over the opening stages as the home side settled better at the Halton Stadium in Widnes, and Bristol had a torrid opening spell as Liverpool made hay down their left. The Merseysiders’ 21-year-old German youth international Nicole Rolser was their main instigator of that, setting up Fors with an early chance which was pulled across the face of goal. Rolser was soon threatening again with a shot which bounced just in front of Bristol goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain, and she then forced a diving save from the England international after letting fly from the

corner of the box. Just after the half-hour, Rolser had another couple of opportunities in the space of a minute, shooting just over the top and then seeing Chamberlain fingertip another attempt fractionally wide of an upright. But a Liverpool goal looked like coming, and finally arrived nine minutes before the break following a quick free-kick down the left. Alex Windell clipped Rolser just inside the box and, from the resulting penalty, Fors fired the ball low into the right-hand corner. Bristol had created only two half-chances in the opening period – one following a corner from skipper Corinne Yorston which flew across the face of goal, and the other a long-range lob from Laura Del Rio which drifted wide of an upright. Although the visitors emerged brighter in the second half, it was still Liverpool who looked the more likely to score. Chamberlain almost spilled a 56th-minute free-kick at Omarsdottir’s feet, but recovered in time to grab the ball at the second attempt. Then, just after the hour, Dowie completely miskicked when presented with a decent chance from the edge of the box, before heading another opening wide of the target as the game moved into the final 20 minutes. Another fierce angled strike by Rolser forced Chamberlain into action again, blocking at her near post. But when a long free-kick into Bristol’s box was chested down by Dowie for Omarsdottir to crash home Liverpool’s second goal 11 minutes from time, the contest – and the season – were effectively over.

We’ll come back stronger from this – Kompany

● Bristol Academy fans turned out in good numbers at the Halton Stadium, Widnes

MANCHESTER City captain Vincent Kompany expects his side’s shock defeat at Aston Villa to provide the spur for a renewed charge. After underlining their Barclays Premier League title credentials with a magnificent 4-1 defeat of Manchester United last week, City were expected to win at Villa Park. For much of the first half it seemed that would be the case as City dominated, but they twice surrendered a lead after the break and Villa snatched a 3-2 win. Manager Manuel Pellegrini described the outcome as “unbelievable” after the game and Kompany seemed similarly baffled, but is determined to ensure it is not repeated. The influential defender said: “We felt confident we were going to win the game, but three chances, three goals – I think that sums the game up. We could have scored five or six. “We have to pick ourselves up and make sure next game we don’t make the (same) mistakes and hope to be a bit more lucky. “The first (Villa) goal was offside and the second goal, a free-kick, is never really something you can do about. We have lost games before, every team in the world has lost games. It is about the reaction, what you do next game. If anything I think we will be more motivated now to make it right.” The result left City still without an away win in the Premier League this season after defeat at Cardiff City last month and a goalless draw at Stoke.

Buttner denies United crisis

● Liverpool celebrate after Katrin Omarsdottir had scored their second goal yesterday

DEFENDER Alexander Buttner insists there is no crisis at Manchester United. A troublesome start to David Moyes' tenure took a sharp downturn on Saturday as West Brom recorded their first win at Old Trafford since 1978. The 3-2 defeat was United's third loss in six Premier League games, representing their worst start to a league campaign since 1989. They have not scored a league goal in open play since their trip to Swansea on the first day of the campaign, have now fallen eight points behind early pace-setters Arsenal and hover just three above the relegation zone. Bookmakers have delivered their own verdict, shoving United out to 7-1 fourth favourites to retain their title and, on the odds alone, in a battle with Tottenham even to qualify for next season's Champions League. It is a scarcely believable situation given United won the championship by an incredible 11 points last term, Sir Alex Ferguson's final one in charge, and led to doubts being expressed by some fans over Moyes' suitability as replacement. Yet Buttner is adamant there is no need to panic. "I don't think it is a crisis," said the Dutch defender. "Of course the crowd want to see Manchester United winning – the players want that, too. "We have lost games and if we lose we are not happy."

Liverpool on the up, but Sturridge knows there’s a long way to go

● Liverpool’s Luis Suarez celebrates after scoring the first of his two goals in the 3-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light yesterday

LIVERPOOL forward Daniel Sturridge has refused to get carried away by their strong start to the Barclays Premier League season. The Reds moved up to second in the standings after a 3-1 win at managerless Sunderland, with Sturridge opening the scoring before two goals from Luis Suarez – either side of Emanuele Giaccherini’s effort for the Black Cats – sealing victory. It was the Merseysiders’ fourth win in six league matches, but Sturridge, pictured, played down their hopes of challenging for the title. He said: “It’s early days, take every day as it comes. Don’t worry about the future, worry about the here and now. “I don’t think we played as well as we could have in the first half, even though we were 2-0 up, but it was very difficult in the second half. “We took our foot off the pedal a little bit and once they scored a goal it got a bit more difficult for us but we held on in the end.

“We defended well towards the end of the game and then got a late goal, which killed it off.” Sturridge opened the scoring in controversial fashion, with the ball taking a heavy deflection off his arm before nestling in the net. The England man defended his actions, however, adding: “It’s a great ball from Stevie, it’s gone over the defender’s head and it was last minute, I’ve obviously tried to head it but I guess my heading’s not good enough. “The ball’s just gone in off my arm, but I wouldn’t do that on purpose. Sometimes these things happen.” Suarez netted a brace on his first Premier League outing since his ten-game ban and Sturridge believes the Uruguayan’s presence can only help Liverpool this season. “It’s great to have him back in, he gives us options and he’s one of the best forwards in the league. “We form a good partnership,” said the former Manchester City and Chelsea striker. “We miss Philippe Coutinho, with his injury, we’ve got

some great players in this team and I’m happy to be playing with them.” Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was also delighted to have Suarez back in the fold. The 26-year-old made his competitive return in the 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Manchester United in midweek, playing the entire 90 minutes. While he drew a blank at Old Trafford, Suarez was a constant thorn in United’s side and underlined his importance to Liverpool’s cause with his brace against Sunderland. “He’s getting the reward for his hard work over the period that he was off. I thought he was excellent the other night at Old Trafford,” Rodgers said. “Him and Daniel up front are a real, real handful. They combined very well.” The Northern Irishman was pleased Liverpool were able to bounce back from their defeat to David Moyes’ men. “On the back of a really tough game where we played well during the week, today was always going to be physically demanding game for us,” he added. “I thought the work we put

into it was exceptional and to get the three goals and maybe a few more chances to score a few more. “I thought we were really dangerous on the counter-attack and as a team we worked really, really hard.” The visitors took a two-goal half-time lead, which was a touch harsh on Sunderland, who had earlier hit the bar through Sebastian Larsson before Giaccherini pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute. Try as they might, the Black Cats could not find an equaliser and were undone by a counter-attack as Suarez clinched victory for Liverpool in the closing stages. “We spoke at half-time and I thought you saw a great reaction. They gave it a really good go in the second half,” said Sunderland’s interim head coach Kevin Ball, who was taking charge of his first Premier League match following Paolo Di Canio’s sacking last weekend. “We took it right to the death but unfortunately you’re susceptible to that counter-attack where 3-1 – and I don’t mean this as disrespect to Liverpool – flatters them a little bit. “It was a shame because I thought the lads had a real good go today and that’s something we need to take heart from.”

Howson’s strike gives Hughton welcome relief Stoke City

0

Norwich City

1

NORWICH boss Chris Hughton hailed what he saw as a “big” and “thoroughly deserved” 1-0 Barclays Premier League win for his side at Stoke – although he admitted they might have been lucky not to concede a second-half penalty. Jonny Howson netted in the 34th minute at the Britannia Stadium with a strike from outside the box as the Canaries took advantage of some sloppy play by their opponents. Norwich had already hit the crossbar through Ryan Bennett and were good value for their lead, but they survived a nervous moment after the break when Leroy Fer appeared to pull back Kenwyne Jones in the box, with no spot-kick being given. Regarding the Jones incident, Fer confessed after the game that he had “pulled his shirt a little bit”. And when that was put to Hughton, he said: “He (Fer) is an honest lad! “I have seen the incident, and yes, there is contact – I have to say, I thought the lad (Jones) made a meal of it. “But if it is something we have got away with, then I think we are due one, as all Norwich supporters will tell you.” The victory was Norwich’s second in the league this season, giving them seven points from six games and moving them up from 17th to 14th in the table. It was also only their second top-flight away win in 2013 – the other being a 3-2 triumph at Manchester City in May – and Hughton said: “I think every win away from home is a big win, particularly for us, given we have found it more difficult away from home. “I don’t think there is anyone who would say different than we thoroughly deserved it. It is a big lift.” Norwich went on a considerable spending spree over the summer and there had been talk in the build-up to this contest of Hughton being under major pressure to get a positive result against Stoke. Asked about that, Hughton said: “It comes with the territory. If we are talking about managers, there will be nobody that puts them under more pressure than themselves, because we take every defeat heavily.” Stoke manager Mark Hughes said: “We didn’t see that coming today because we have been really good. That is the disappointment and the mystery. I thought, heading into the game, we were in good shape. “We said at the beginning of the year that on occasions this season there would be days where we don’t get it right.”

Steve Hill epsport@b-nm.co.uk CELEBRATIONS were muted as Clifton stretched their 100 per cent record to four outings to remain clear at the top of National Two South on a dramatic day at Clifton College. The home side, playing in Clifton for the first time in their 141-year history, were in complete control leading 21-7 at the turnaround, strong in the set-piece and looking well equipped wider out to kick on and win with something to spare. But the second period was a story of missed opportunities and edge-of-the-seat defending as newly-promoted Stortford – coached by former England hooker Andy Long – grew in stature and played with such confidence that the final whistle could not come quickly enough for Clifton. Home skipper Paul Fincken said: “We would have lost this game last season. We didn’t play well second half, but we’ve learned from last year, we stuck at it and kept things together.

● Clifton prepare to scrum down against Bishop’s Stortford in front of the impressive background of Clifton College

● Stortford charge forward

“If you had said to me at the start of the season ‘would you be happy with four from four at the end of September?’ then of course I would have said yes. But today shows there’s still plenty to work on.” This might have been a completely different game, but for an horrific injury suffered by Stortford’s former England Under-18 No 8 Charlie Kingham in the first quarter. Clifton took instant advantage of the sin-binning of flanker Steve Ballfor an offence at the breakdown to grab the opening try, Fincken muscling over from a catch and drive move, Charlie Foley converting. Soon after, a second score appeared imminent as the rampant home side hammered away again at the line, but the match was then held up for 16 minutes as Kingham suffered a dislocated hip in a tackle, after which Clifton lost virtually all momentum and control. With an air ambulance circling,

Stortford got up the other end for the first time, grabbing their opening try from a five-metre line-out when the throw missed its intended target and found unmarked prop Sean Edwards, Joe Clark converting. Clifton, watched by an estimated crowd of 500 enjoying the leafy college surrounds, retrieved their mojo to end the half on top, winger Sam Smith darting over from close range while Fincken then spotted a nice inside line to take scrum-half Greg Nicholls’ pop pass for a second five-pointer, Foley converting both. At this stage there appeared only one winner. But wasted Clifton chances – from Foley fluffing a 22-metre penalty less than 60 seconds after the restart to the home side losing their edge in the scrum and a careless forward pass close to the line late on that cost the try bonus and valuable breathing space – kept the door open for Stortford.

The visitors had played attractively enough, retaining and recycling the ball across the width of the pitch without ever really threatening. But now they started to find gaps and make ground with Clifton struggling to contain the urgent promptings of replacement scrum-half Sam Coleman. Good handling and patient build-up play was finally rewarded with a try wide out for replacement Ross Bird soon after home flanker Tom O’Keefe was carded for not rolling away. And, with just six minutes of regulation time remaining, flanker Richard Gill found an opening close to the line for the visitors’ third try, Coleman converting off an upright to set up a tense finish. Clifton resembled an exhausted boxer on the ropes but dug in to slow down the game, keep their defensive shape and hang on for the tightest of wins.

DINGS were very unfortunate to come away with just two bonus points having been in front for most of the match, outscored the home side six tries to five and lead by six points with the 80 minutes up. Bournemouth, who always looked dangerous with the ball in hand, managed a converted try with the final play of the match to snatch the result. Eleven tries between the two sides made for good viewing for the spectators in a match that for long periods resembled a sevens affair with neither side able to retain the ball long enough to gain control. Dings opened the scoring after five minutes when wing Ollie Reyland bundled over in the corner after a fine miss pass from stand-off Mitch Burton. Bournemouth replied with a drop goal from full-back Ben Stevenson and took the lead on ten minutes with a penalty from stand-off Jack Metters. The home side stretched their lead on 18 minutes with a try from halfway for Stevenson after Dings spilt the ball. Dings hit back straight from the kick-off with a try for flanker Sam Steer after a brilliant catch from the kick-off by lock Jake Holcombe, who had a very lively game, full-back Mark Woodrow added the conversion for 12-11 to Dings on 19 minutes. Tries either side of half time, first from scrum-half Steve Plummer, who gathered his own kick to score in the corner and then from flanker Matt Lane, who seized on the dropped ball in his own half to sprint in for a try, saw Dings stretch their lead to 24-11 five minutes into the second half. The home side replied with two tries around the hour mark, first from a poor clearance kick which the home side ran back for hooker Frazer Wilford to cross in the corner. The second saw scrum-half Sam Hardcastle barge through three tackles to touch down, Metters added one conversion to bring the score to 24-23 to Dings. The final quarter saw four tries. Dings, whose scrum was dominant all afternoon, forced a penalty try on 68 minutes. Four minutes later, the home side hit back with a try for wing Alex Sutherland. Again Dings got a try direct from the restart when No 8 Mike Uren won the ball and centre Sheldon Stevens broke through the middle to feed fellow centre Rob Dempsey for a try out wide and a score of 36-30 to Dings with just minutes left on the clock. Dings held on comfortably until the last minute and could have scored again when Steer was held up close to the try line, but the home side had the last laugh when two tap penalties took them the length of the field for replacement Joe Atkinson to score close to the posts with the final play and Metters landed the conversion fto draw the sides level.

Foreign holidays always bring out the best in people – especially their golf scores I HAVE just returned from a trip to Benidorm in Spain, along with a number of old pals. We were celebrating the 50th birthdays of a couple of chaps who, back in the day, were decent footballers at amateur level. Both Russell Crew and Paul Hemmings were team-mates together at Highridge United, and on Sunday mornings played for the King’s Head pub, based in Bedminster Down. These two were joined on the trip by many ex-players from the local non-league soccer scene. The fun and games started on our arrival at Bristol Airport. One of the chaps in our party, Terry Hartigan, had never been on an aircraft before, and was very nervous as we made our way to the check-in desk. He ap-

Dave Payne Writes for the Green ’Un proached a member of staff and asked if she could answer a query he had. Smiling, she said: “Certainly, how may I help?” Anxiously, he asked, “This is my maiden flight, can you tell me where would you consider the safest place to be seated on the plane?” With a reassuring gesture she answered: “Ideally sitting on the wing has been proven to be the best place

after extensive tests.” Terry looked at her horrified and said: “You must be joking – can’t I sit inside the plane?!” We had booked some tee times at a couple of golf courses on the outskirts of Benidorm. This is both Russell and Paul’s preferred sport to participate in these days, especially if they can hire a buggy to help them get around. To be honest, I am quite surprised that Russell hasn’t taken up golf professionally. I have played alongside him on countless occasions, and have never come close to defeating him. Whenever there is a competition with prize money at stake, you can be sure as eggs are eggs that Russ will come out on top. The man is amazing, he will

hit a tee shot into the trees, find his ball, chip out into a water hazard, drop a shot, then find a bunker just off the green, take a couple of putts and still remarkably score a par four for the hole. We honestly don’t know how he does it! On reaching our hotel in Benidorm, a porter offered to show me to my room. I stopped in my tracks, and bellowed: “This room is tiny, where is the TV and the mini bar, or even a window?” He replied: “This is the elevator sir.” I was not sure if the receptionist at the hotel either didn’t understand me correctly or was deliberately winding me up. I rang the reception from my room and asked if I could have an early morning call. She replied: “Certainly, sir – cockadoodle do!”

It was obvious that both Russ and Paul had spent some of their birthday money on new clothes for our little break. I noticed that the designers name was Tommy Fullfigure! I had quite a pleasant surprise when taking a seat on the aircraft for our return journey. I spotted a couple of chaps Martin Hagan and Kevin Regan, both old schoolboy rugby team-mates of mine at St Bernadettes, who I haven’t seen for nearly 40 years. I was unsure they would recognize me after all those years. Martin though, looked at me and said: “You’re the chap who writes the corny jokes in the paper”. I replied: “Sorry mate think you’ve got the wrong person!”
