Help to Buy brings ‘forever homes’ closer House builder Crest Nicholson says the Government’s Help to Buy scheme has increased the size of properties that first-time buyers can afford. Previously, many were restricted small properties – often apartments – with just one or two bedrooms and little or no outdoor space. However, Help to Buy, which requires just a five per cent deposit, is enabling budgets to stretch, and many can now afford a three or four-bedroom house with a garden as their first purchase. The scheme is also providing first-time buyers with more choice over where they live. In a nutshell, says Crest, Help to Buy cuts the number of steps on the housing ladder that must be taken before the purchase of a “forever” home is within reach.

ouse hunters across Weston-super-Mare are being given the opportunity to find out how the Government’s Help to Buy scheme could help them move on to, or up, the property ladder, at a dedicated open weekend on Saturday and Sunday, September 21-22. Hosted by St Modwen Homes at its Locking Parklands development, the weekend will provide potential purchasers with details of the equity loan scheme, giving people the chance to speak directly to an independent financial advisor and discover if the initiative could help them purchase a new home. Available to people on all stages of the property ladder, Help to Buy has been widely celebrated for improving the housing market across the UK. Under the scheme, purchasers only pay for 80 per cent of the listed price (made up of a 75 per cent mortgage and a five per cent deposit) as the Government will lend up to 20 per cent of the property’s value through an equity loan. Purchasers however, will still own 100 per cent of the house. The scheme has proved exceptionally popular at Locking Parklands, with many of the homes sold at the development since the scheme’s launch purchased under Help to Buy. First time buyers Ashley and Chelsea Evans, and their nine-month-old daughter Nevaeh, were one such family who made use of the scheme at Locking Parklands. Chelsea said: “We’d been looking for a house for over a year, but when we saw the green spaces on offer at Locking Parklands we knew the de-

velopment would be a safe, welcoming and beautiful place to bring up our daughter. “Obtaining a mortgage and saving for a deposit is a struggle for the majority of young families nowadays, so when Jackie in the sales office mentioned about the Help to Buy scheme, we immediately wanted to find out more and see if it was a feasible option for us. “Purchasing under Help to Buy has meant that we have been able to buy a larger house than we were originally looking at. The extra space is great when you have a baby in the house, especially the open-plan living area, and it means we can really start planning for our future. “The St Modwen Homes sales team were fantastic and took us through the process step by step, explaining everything along the way and helping us decide what options worked best for our own situation.
