What does it cost? At £4,500 this Duke is £370 less expensive than its direct rival, the Kawasaki Ninja 300. So, with sensible pricing allied to the new machine’s lithe handling and excellent performance this should be enough to close the deal for most. The bike is made by KTM’s co-owners Bajaj whose plant is in Mumbai, India. The completed machines are shipped to Austria for final road testing and quality inspection. Despite this there still remains a question of the build quality and the bikes’ durability in harsh European winters.

ITH the average age of motorcyclists getting older each year, it is in the manufacturers’ best interests to encourage the younger generation into the joys of two wheels. KTM has designed this bike to appeal directly to this demographic in the hope it will create the next biking generation. It certainly looks the part and with a huge range of official accessories available to individualise the bike to the customer’s own specification, the 390 Duke has the potential to become a big seller.

The modern chassis design which is the same as the 125 has ensured that the Duke’s handling is agile and exceptionally competent. The brakes not only pull the bike up well but offer plenty of progressive feel. The suspension set-up is close to perfect for a 390cc machine and the 390 Duke’s ride comfort is exemplary. Overall, KTM has succeeded in providing its new model with the feel of a full-size bike while the riding position appears to be better than that found on several of its rivals, although this does, of course, depend on personal tastes. This 390 Duke gets its power from a liquid-cooled fuel-injected powerplant with a claimed output of 44bhp at 9,500rpm and 25.83 lb-ft of torque at 7,250rpm. The engine feeds its power through a six speed transmission. Top speed is in excess of 100mph. The bike is extremely agile and easy to manoeuvre and the extra power of the 390’s motor is a huge confidence booster.
Verdict KTM has managed to carry out an excellent job with the 390 Duke’s styling which is aggressive with its stunted tail and sharp-looking front end. The bike’s overall appearance is exciting and very pleasing to the eye. KTM is one of the coolest brands in the market which in itself will certainly appeal to the 390 Duke’s target audience. Being an excellent bike in its own right won’t do this KTM’s sales potential any harm either! Great fun too!

1 in 3 opt for hand car wash
L
ATEST research from British Car Auctions reveals that nearly a third of motorists who have their car cleaned regularly pay to get it hand washed rather than do it themselves or take it to an automated car wash. A third respondents to the BCA’s research said they get their car cleaned or clean it themselves at least every couple of weeks – and 18 per cent get it spruced up at least once a week. Of these, nearly a third (31 per cent) use a hand car-wash service, with only 6 per cent going to an automated car wash. For those motorists happy to pay out for a hand car wash, one in three go every couple
of weeks and the same number around once a month. One in six get their car hand washed once a week. With a basic hand car wash starting at around £6 and potentially costing as much as £65 for a full valet, this could certainly add up with even just a weekly basic wash costing a motorist more than £300 a year. It is not surprising, therefore, that more than 60 per cent said they do it themselves, although a cheeky 2 per cent would get their partner to do it. The BCA research did, however, expose a few dirty drivers, with nearly 4 per cent cleaning their car just once a year. BCA surveyed 625 motorists.

How you get a better deal on your insurance ONE in three consumers pays over the odds for car insurance because they fail to shop around and simply accept their insurer’s renewal quote, says the RAC. Younger drivers can also grab themselves potentially much cheaper car insurance by opting for one of the new blackbox policies, these put a spy in your car to monitor your driving and reward those who are careful with major reductions in premiums. Whether you are male or female, old or young, follow our guide below.
EPB-E01-S3
Top tips to lower premiums ✔ Shop around: But make sure you compare like-for-like cover. Some policies may seem cheaper, but you may find you don’t have the same level of cover. Use an online comparison service to do the hard work for you. Also check the insurers that don’t feature in comparison sites, the big two are Direct Line and Aviva. ✔ Protect that no-claims bonus: A long no-claims bonus is the single best way of cutting car insurance costs, so protect it. This may increase the premium by a few pounds, but this fades into insignificance against the potential loss of a 90 per cent discount on a premium of several hundred pounds. ✔ Take a higher excess: Agreeing to pay more towards the cost of any accident repairs will bring down premiums. If you are not at fault in an accident, the excess can be recovered. ✔ Secure your car: Fitting an approved alarm, immobiliser or tracking device can attract a discount of around five per cent. Many newer cars will come with these as standard. ✔ Cover fewer miles: The fewer miles the car covers, the greater the saving. For example, a reduction in annual mileage of 5,000 miles could save a typical 35-year-old female driver about £50 a year in premiums. A cut of 10,000 miles a year could save more than £100. ✔ Think carefully about adding young drivers: Adding a young, inexperienced driver to your policy can be a false economy, especially if you have a large or high-powered vehicle. ✔ Remember what the garage is for: Insurers like cars kept in garages overnight and this can dramatically cut your premium. ✔ Sign up for a blackbox: Blackbox policies, where the insurer installs a system in your car to monitor your driving, reward those who drive carefully. They check speed, handling and how cautiously you drive, and also whether you are on the road at perceived dangerous times – ie the early hours of the morning. They can cut premiums substantially once you start proving you are a good driver.

Where drivers are most likely to hit lampposts... NEW research into the types of accidents motorists in the UK have has shown people in the West are most likely to have prangs in narrow country lanes. Drivers in parts of Scotland are the most likely to hit a lamppost, those in parts of the north west of England are most likely to have a bump at traffic lights and hitting trees is more common with those who live in areas of the leafy Home Counties. Car insurance specialist Admiral looked at 1.3 million claims over the last five years to see if they were any patterns in the postcode areas where motorists live and the types of accidents they have. With its many scenic country roads, perhaps unsurprisingly, motorists in the West of England are most likely to experience a narrow lane collision with Torquay, Exeter and Taunton postcode areas topping the list of this type of claim. The study showed Scottish drivers top the list for accidents involving lampposts with the postcode towns of Paisley, Aberdeen, Motherwell and Glasgow taking the top four spots for this type of claim. People living in Liverpool and Manchester postcodes topped the list for collisions at traffic lights while those living in the Tonbridge, Redhill, Guildford and Stevenage areas in the Home Counties appeared at the top of the list for accidents involving trees. Admiral’s acting managing director, Dave Halliday said: “The most common type of accidents on the UK’s roads are rear end bumps, but we wanted to see if there were any trends with the other types of ac-
cidents we see as well, and there were some interesting findings.” Admiral’s study found motorists who live in the north-east part of Greater London, in particular Romford, Ilford and Enfield, are the most likely to either be hit in the rear or to hit another car in the rear, but for motorists who live in inner London it’s leaving a car parked up that presents a bigger risk.
It found motorists in the NW, N and W postcodes are the most likely to have their car hit while parked. Mr Halliday said: “The stop-start nature of traffic in Greater London may explain the higher frequency of rear-end bumps of motorists who live there, just as the many country lanes in the West of England may explain the narrow lane collisions. “However, the results in Scotland
Two racing titles up for grabs at Castle Combe
T
HE Castle Combe circuit’s racing season comes to an end this weekend, with two championships to be decided and a day of nostalgia. Grand Finals day on Saturday sees yet another Castle Combe Formula Ford 1600 championship going down to the wire. And just like last year, it’s Saltford’s Steven Jensen who goes into the race with a difficult, but not impossible, task. This year, it’s Chippenham’s Adam Higgins who has the points advantage and he just needs to score one point to deny Jensen the title, regardless of where his rival finishes. Jensen on the other hand has only one goal – he must win the race and achieve the fastest lap, hoping Higgins fails to score. Other races on Saturday include the Quaife Intermarque championship, BMWs and an open Sports v Saloon challenge. Sunday’s Carole Nash Insurance and Bristol Forklifts Autumn Classic brings a superb array of cars and races rarely seen together. Eagerly awaited and full of local aces is the Tim Rogers Memorial Trophy for Big Healeys, in memory of the late owner of TON 792, one of only
● The Formula Ford 1600 championship reaches its climax at Castle Combe this weekend two 6 cylinder Austin Healeys to race at Le Mans. Rogers, formerly from Churchill, was a joint owner of the car with David Smithies from Flax Bourton, who is on a high after his superb win in it at the recent Goodwood Revival. The only other ex Le Mans car, the famous DD300, with which Bristol’s John Chatham entertained crowds at Combe in its heyday, will also take part, now in the hands of Karsten Le Blanc. The Bristol area has always been a major centre for Healey activity and this race carries on that tradition. Bristol Forklifts owner and quadruple Monaco winner Julian Bronson partners Steve Bicknell.
Chris Clarkson and Ted Williams are another well known Bristol pairing, as are Eric Woolley and Weston-super-Mare’s Dan Cox, all in 3000s. Oliver and Joe, John Chatham’s sons, are also expected to share a car. Staying with the Bristol connection, the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, based in Filton, has its 30-minute race for the Norman Dewis Trophy. Making a long awaited return to Combe is the Miller Oils Formula Junior Championship, featuring the one litre and 1100cc single seaters. One of the most beautiful cars on the grid will be the 1961 Lotus 20 of Professor Peter Hawkey of Painswick, rescued from a scrapyard in Kenya. Very popular last year was the Fiscar race for historic sports and GT cars of the Fifties, which is run as a 30-minute, three-car team race with pit stops. Events get under way with qualifying at 8.30am, and the first race at 12.35pm. Admission prices are £15 for adults, £10 for OAPs, with accompanied children under 17 admitted free. For further information, visit www.castle combecircuit.co.uk.
and the North West were a little more surprising. It’s a real mystery why Scottish motorists are more likely to hit a lamppost and why those in Liverpool and Manchester are more likely to have bumps at lights.” Admiral research also found the incidence of car park prangs to be high in Scotland, while roundabout collisions were highest in the Chelmsford area.
Economy is car owners’ priority CASH-STRAPPED motorists plan to put economy ahead of every other factor for their next car purchase, according to a new report by CAP Automotive. Exclusive research among motorists across Britain reveals that economic aspects now trump every other car purchase consideration, including practicality, handling, performance and environmental impact. The growing importance of economy over almost every other aspect of the car-ownership experience is

The five most important were purchase price, fuel economy, running costs, overall total cost of ownership, and service and maintenance costs. driven home by the finding that even practicality, handling and styling are now considered less important than the annual cost of a tax disc. Peugeot 2008 Fuel economy
The engines are some of the most economical that Peugeot makes, too. The 92bhp 1.6-litre e-HDI with the EGC gearbox manages to eke better than 74 miles from a gallon of derv while emitting just 98g/km of CO2. The petrol variants don’t do too badly either. The 1.2-litre VTi manages 576.6mpg on the combined cycle and 114g/km of CO2

Renault Captur
Mitsubishi Outlander
Vauxhall Mokka
● THE Captur launches into a market of compact crossover vehicles such as the Nissan Juke and the Skoda Yeti but brings with it some clever interior touches and plenty of style. Some super-economical engines also feature. Expect the Captur to attract the sort of buyer who likes the way the Nissan Juke drives but prefer prettier styling. Price: £12,495 – £18,895 0-62 mph: 10.9 – 13.5 secs Max speed: 106 – 119 mph CO2 (g/km): 95 – 125 Combined mpg: 52.3 – 76
● THE Outlander makes an interesting left-field choice if you are looking for a reliable, well-equipped seven-seater that is priced keenly and made well. There is just one engine on offer, and it is a decent 150PS 2.2-litre diesel, mated to an all-wheel-drive chassis. Price: £23,699 – £33,999 0-62 mph: 10.2 – 11.7 secs Max speed: 118 – 124 mph CO2 (g/km): 138 – 153 Combined mpg: 48.7 – 53.3
● LOOK clearly at what you get for the money which you pay and the Vauxhall Mokka makes fashionable sense. Peugeot turns up the heat in busy sector
T SEEMS that almost every manufacturer wants a slice of the crossover action. Vauxhall’s Mokka and its Chevy Trax sister vehicle, the Mini Countryman, the Skoda Yeti and the budget Dacia Duster have all tried to elbow each other aside and with the arrival of the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Captur, things look like getting even more hotly contested. So what are the chances of Peugeot’s entry to this crowded marketplace, with its 2008? Despite its beefy looks, the 2008 is front-wheel drive only, but some off-road ability is delivered on pokier 1.6-litre petrol and diesel variants via a clever Grip Control traction system. This comprises an intelligent traction control system and special all-weather tyres. Grip Control automatically improves the vehicle’s traction on difficult surfaces, such as snow, mud, dirt tracks and wet grass, working with the vehicle’s Electronic Stability Programme to maintain the best possible traction from both front wheels. It has five selectable operating modes which can be chosen by the driver from a dedicated control mounted on the centre console, not unlike a Land Rover Terrain Response system. The engine line-up will be familiar fare if you know the 208 supermini. Base versions get a choice of either an 82bhp 1.2 VTi petrol or a 70bhp 1.4-litre HDi diesel. Moving up the range, there’s a 120bhp 1.6-litre VTi petrol unit and either 92 or

Mini Paceman Cooper S
Test drive Mini story takes another twist If you like the idea of a fast version of Mini’s Paceman coupe, then the Cooper S variant is the one to choose, says Jonathan Crouch
Adaptive Headlights, Park Distance Control, an electrically operated glass roof, plus the Mini navigation system. Advanced infotainment functions are available via Mini Connected. A range of optional equipment packages are also available along with eight exterior paint shades. As always with Mini, there is an extensive choice of bonnet stripes, upholstery variants, interior surfaces and Colour Lines. Get a bit creative. Mini has worked at improving the car’s efficiency with a comprehensive raft of measures, which include Brake Energy Generation, Auto Start/Stop, Shift Point Display and Electric Power Steering. The result is some very good fuel economy and emissions figures. The Cooper S Paceman manages 46.3mpg and 143g/km. In some ways, it’s a car that makes very little sense at all – which is probably exactly why many potential buyers will like it, especially in pokey Cooper S guise.
O
ld-school Mini fans have never really got to grips with the Countryman model. Introduced in 2010, here was a Mini that wasn’t at all mini. Nevertheless, sales have demonstrated that there was a whole swathe of buyers who would have liked a Mini if it wasn’t quite so small. In the shape of the Paceman, the story takes an even stranger twist. Mini is now looking for a group of buyers for whom the original car was too small, but who now need a bigger model, albeit one whose practicality benefits have been compromised by a coupe body. Confused? Join the club. So the Paceman may have its work cut out, but then so did Mini’s Clubman estate (with its odd door layout) and the Roadster drop-top (produced when Mini already had a convertible in its range). Both won buyers round and this car, unveiled at the 2011 Detroit Motor Show as the premium small car segment’s first Sports Activity Coupe, may well do the same. In choosing a variant with speed to match its name, you might well end up in the petrol-powered Cooper S. It doesn’t have the ridiculous price tag of the top JCW variant, but its 184bhp 1.6-litre turbo engine gives nearly the same performance. Being based on the Countryman chassis, the Paceman drives reasonably well for a car of its size and weight. It’s quite quick in Cooper S form too, the 2WD version managing 0-62mph in 7.5s on the way to 135mph. Performance that isn’t much affected if you go for the ALL4 4WD system. On the move, there’s more body roll than Mini regulars will be used to and the car is less ready to change direction at your slightest whim even
Personalised plate made me chuckle ● PERSONALISED number plates are a bit like Marmite – we either love them or hate them. Usually I fall into the latter camp, since I dislike individuals who purposely draw attention to themselves. But occasionally I will see a little gem that makes me chuckle. One appeared last weekend in Gloucestershire, attached to a shiny new Volvo V40. Perhaps acquired by a London type who comes West regularly for weekends, the plate read: M4 YUK. Priceless! A quick look at the DVLA website, where thousands of personalised registrations are
Overview if you’re at the wheel of a Cooper S equipped with a DTC traction control and an EDLC Electronic Differential Lock Control package supposed to help you do exactly that. Sports suspension is a standard fitment across the range and rock hard springs leave the damping on the firm side of firm and as for the steering, well, the car darts left and right with the smallest movement of the wheel, which takes a bit of getting used to. Both issues are correctable though; you can specify a standard and more comfortable suspension set-up as a no-cost option. And the steering, I

A strict four-seater, the Paceman nevertheless has a practical element. Folding down the rear seats expands the rear load-carrying capacity from 330-litres to a maximum of 1,080-litres. On another note, thanks go to reader Clive Grimsby who wanted to highlight the following motoring gripes. Clive asks: “Why do drivers not use their indicators? It does not take much; just a slight movement of a finger/wrist. Indicators are not an added extra, they come with the car.
“Why do drivers not use their headlights in inclement weather or at dusk? It is not just so they can see – it is also so they can be seen by other road users. “Why do drivers pulling out from a junction always look the wrong way first and then look the correct way and have to brake to avoid an accident?” What drives you to distraction on Bristol’s roads? come practicality. Expect to pay in the £22,500 to £25,000 bracket for your Paceman Cooper S, depending on whether you want the 6-speed Steptronic auto gearbox and/or the ALL4 4WD system fitted. Laudably, Mini doesn’t skimp on safety kit and every Paceman gets twin front, side and full length curtain airbags. ISOFIX child seat attachments in the rear and a tyre pressure warning light are on every model. Other standard equipment? Try air con, powered door mirrors and front sports seats. Options include Xenon

THE VERDICT ● The MINI Paceman is, in effect, a Countryman coupe. And that might well be the oddest of the Mini body styles to date. As with some of the others, you may be left scratching your head. Is this the time that Mini confounds us yet again or will the wheels come off with a model too far? Let’s find out at the wheel of the quick Cooper S variant.
