ORSHAM resident and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will drive one of his most iconic cars at this Sunday’s Autumn Classic at Castle Combe racing circuit. The collector of classic racing cars will drive his Maserati 250F, a machine in which legendary five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio claimed title success in 1957. Nick acquired the car almost by accident. He said: “I was buying another car from an American, an ERA R10B, and he wanted to sell the two cars as a package. “I could see why. The 250F was a basket case, and a good way to get rid of something like that is to sell a complete car along with a project.” In 2009, the 250F was voted the greatest racing car ever by readers of Octane magazine. So the lunchtime demonstration laps which Nick will perform on Sunday will provide a special opportunity for spectators at Castle Combe. The day’s events have a classic theme and get under way at 8.30am. There are races for Big Healeys, pre-war sports cars from the Vintage

● PANICKERS. Intimidated easily and recognisable by a preying-mantis-style position hunched over the wheel, their driving is often extreme – either too slow or too fast, and characterised by indecision, or decisions made and acted upon without due care. Besides lorry drivers, who often do exactly as they please and expect us mere car drivers to defer, avoid and brake in order to accommodate their wishes, panickers are my least favoured drivers – especially on a motorway. Last week I wrote about a personalised number plate which tickled me – M4 YUK. This week, I wish I had it displayed it, for said motorway was the location for an unpleasant experience. Heading back to Bristol after a weekend in the valleys of South Wales, we were somewhere around Newport when my friend, who was driving, narrowly avoided a shunt with a silver Ford Puma. The Puma was in the outside lane and fractionally behind at the
time my friend was pulling out – having indicated her intention – into the middle lane to overtake a lorry. As we crossed the lane divide, the Puma, without indicating, suddenly swung into the middle lane and would have clipped us had my friend not been keeping a good eye on the mirrors. Luckily for us, we had not yet drawn level with the lorry we were trying to overtake, and had room to drop in behind it. The Puma swept past, seemingly oblivious. A second or two later, I noticed the reason for its sudden manoeuvre. Two sporty-looking efforts had been bearing down upon it, and the Puma driver had been intimidated into taking action – without warning – to avoid them. The moral of this story? Stand your ground against bullying tailgaters until you are sure that it is safe to get out of their way. ● What drives you to distraction? Ford Tourneo Connect
Test drive Cost-effective and so spacious, this is a guaranteed hit Ford’s Tourneo Connect offers families a multi-purpose vehicle that goes large on practicality. Andy Enright reports.

HINK people-mover vehicles and you will probably come up with cars like the Ford C-MAX, the Renault Scenic and the Vauxhall Zafira. Increasingly, though, customers looking for true practicality are often finding models like these a little too polished or, to put it bluntly, not something that you would be willing to put a wet dog into. It never used to be that way. The first generation of these cars were resolutely practical things. Today, while they retain the space and the clever folding seats, the ambience is one of club-class travel rather than rugged practicality. That is where cars like the Ford Tourneo Connect come in. A gap opens beneath these increasingly-glitzy MPVs for something that does not mind rolling up its sleeves once in a while. This genre of car was popularised by models like the Citroen Berlingo Multispace and the Peugeot Partner Combi. Now Ford has muscled in with the five-seat Tourneo Connect and the seven-seat Grand Tourneo Connect. Ford offers a decent range of engine options in its Tourneo Connect line-up. But for many people, the search will begin and end with the multi-award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol powerplant that is offered with the five-seater model. This is a cracking little engine that offers a fizzy power delivery, its turbocharger helping the tiny three-cylinder unit to a respectable 100PS. The only potential issue here is that this version might end up feeling a little breathless if you are driving regularly with the vehicle fully loaded, in which case you might prefer the powerful Bridgend-built 150PS 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol variant. This also has the benefit of being offered with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Some buyers will countenance nothing but a diesel. To satisfy them, there are two versions of the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine with a choice of 95 and 115PS power outputs. The former gets a five-speed manual box, the latter a six-speed. Go for the Grand Tourneo Connect and it is offered solely with diesel power. The Tourneo Connect is reasonably quick off the mark when fitted with the 150PS petrol engine, getting to 62 mph from standstill in 11.4 seconds on the way to 104 mph. Anything else is a bit more leisurely. Every rear seat has integral head restraints and three-point seatbelts. Split 60/40, the seat backs fold and tumble and can be removed, allowing you to maximise the cargo space. In the Grand Tourneo Connect, rear seats can be folded flat into the footwell for maximum luggage space, and
there is an optional third row of seats split 50/50 which can also be folded flat. Outer second-row rear seats have ISOFIX anchorage points, making it easy to fit the latest removable child seats. The Tourneo Connect has been designed to make the most of its internal space, with storage boxes on both the driver and passenger sides of the dashboard, 1.5-litre holders in the front doors, floor stowage and even aircraft-style overhead lockers. Both the Tourneo Connect and the Grand Tourneo Connect are offered in three trim levels – Style, Zetec and Titanium. Prices kick off at a little more than £14,000 for the entry-level petrol version, with the diesels from around the £15,000 mark. Should you prefer the longer car, you will pay from around £17,000 for the Grand with the 95PS diesel in Style trim. Do you need more power? Then you will have to dig a bit deeper
and upgrade to Zetec specification, which will set you back more than £19,000. This makes the Tourneo Connect a little pricier than a Citroen Berlingo Multispace, which retails in petrol form between £13,000 and £17,000, but considerably cheaper than Ford’s C-MAX compact MPV. Against seven-seat rivals, the Grand Tourneo Connect looks very competitive. Equipment levels are reasonably generous, with even the entry-level Style coming with a digital radio, a USB-in socket, Bluetooth, wheel-mounted stereo controls, electronic stability control, and remote central locking. Step up to the Zetec and you get air conditioning, a heated windscreen and mirrors, an eight-way adjustable driver’s seat and the clever Ford SYNC system for connecting in all manner of electronic devices, a set-up that also includes a feature to help
summon assistance after an accident. The range-topping Tourneo Connect Titanium is supplied with cruise control, static cornering lights, parking sensors, alloy wheels, a panoramic roof, dual-zone air conditioning, seat-back tray tables and integral roof rails. The Tourneo Connect scores extremely well on virtually any efficiency or cost-of-operation metric you can throw at it. Just about the only caveat worth mentioning is that the 1.0T petrol engine probably will not make anything like the 50.4 mpg quoted for combined fuel economy, if market experience of this unit in some of Ford’s other models is anything to go by. If you are really concerned with economy, it will be better to plump for one of the diesels. The 95PS powerplant gets a combined 56.5 mpg and emits just 130 g/km. Specify that en-
gine with the auto-start-stop system and those figures translate to 61.4 mpg and 121 g/km – but you will have to pay an extra £360 for the privilege. In other words, if you ran the car for 12,000 miles a year, the extra £360 would pay for itself in three years in fuel bills. With a versatile interior that is not too clever for its own good and a sensible array of engines, the Tourneo Connect appears a guaranteed hit. In the past, Ford has been reticent to give its commercial-sourced passenger products the promotional push they deserve. If that is still the case, the Tourneo Connect might become the best MPV the mass market has never heard of.

● Skoda’s improved Roomster continues to compete against van-based mini-MPVs but it certainly doesn’t look like one. It’s as versatile too – and as spacious. If you’re searching for a small car but need it to be practical, affordable and just that little bit different, then this little Skoda could be what you’re looking for.
● Families seeking space, versatility and low costs have a ready-made candidate in the improved Partner Tepee. They’ll have to put up with sluggish performance and the odd jibe about driving a van with windows but on the price to practicality ratio, it’s a winner. There’s also a seven-seat Partner which looks even more affordable next to similar MPVs.
● The revised version of Citroen’s civilised second generation Berlingo Multispace has been further distanced from the original model’s basic commercial roots. With smarter styling, more equipment and the hi-tech option of a more efficient e-HDi diesel engine, this value-for-money five or seven-seater is now a vehicle to be taken very seriously.

Alfa gamble looks set to be rewarded Alfa Romeo has long been a brand of unfulfilled promise. With the 4C it gets right back on track. Andy Enright reports.
Verdict A rear-wheel-drive, mid-engined sports car based around a lightweight carbon-fibre chassis? That will be a McLaren or a Lamborghini, right? Usually – but Alfa Romeo’s £45,000 4C sports coupe joins that club. With a turbocharged 1.7-litre engine behind the driver and a serious power-to-weight ratio, the good times look to be returning to Alfa Romeo.
T
HERE has been the occasional highlight along the way – but for an enthusiast marque, Alfa Romeo has all too often not just missed the bullseye but missed the target. That era ended with the arrival of the 4C sports coupe. The good news for lovers of sports cars is that the 4C delivers on its promise. It is revolutionary in the way it brings all-carbon-fibre chassis construction to a sensible price point. And it goes in a way that those who demeaned it as just a 1.7-litre four-cylinder auto would never believe. One figure tells you a lot about the 4C’s potential. Its power-to-weight ratio is 259 bhp per tonne. That is right up there with powerhouses like the BMW M3 CSL, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo FQ-400 and the Audi RS5. It even beats the Lamborghini Countach LP500S. All of that comes courtesy of an all-aluminium, direct-injection four-cylinder 1,750cc turbocharged petrol engine that makes 240 bhp and is assisted by the 4C’s kerb weight of just 925 kg. That is about the same as a Lotus Exige, so you know that this is quite a special beast. It gets to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, which beats a Cayman S quite easily, drive being deployed via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. The gear change is 30 per cent quicker in dynamic or race modes. And the clever rev-matching ability of the engine ensures that shifts are quick and smooth.

OTORCYCLES, including a wonderful collection of almost 100 classic Japanese bikes, will be on offer at Bonhams’ annual autumn sale at the Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show. Assembled by Dutch entrepreneur Michael Buttinger, the collection comprises mainly Hondas ranging from the 50cc Super Cub to the NR750. The NR75O is estimated to have a value of £50,000 to £70,000. It was designed with no expense spared by Mitsuyoshi Kohama to showcase Honda’s advanced technology. Also on offer are early Suzukis, Kawasakis and Yamahas, a variety of later 1970s and 1980s classics, and two prototype engines – a sand-cast CBX1000 and a CX500. Many of the motorcycles are unused. Outside The Buttinger Collection, the 1974 Kawasaki 500cc H1-RW 500cc triple is expected to sell for between £60,000 and £70,000. Japanese works Grand Prix motorcycles from the 1970s are exceptionally rare and even rarer in private hands, most having been scrapped or consigned to museums, so the Kawasaki is sure to attract attention from collectors. It is one of only two machines built by the factory for the French Kawasaki importer SIDEMM for use in the 500cc World Championship. The bikes were ridden during 1974 by the French endurance-racing specialist Christian Leon and French-Canadian Formula 750 star Yvon Duhamel. The 250cc Moto Morini Grand Prix racer, inset, will be of particular interest to collectors of European racing motorcycles. Until the recent arrival of the Moto 3 class in Grand Prix racing, the 250cc Moto Morini was the fastest single-cylinder four-stroke of its capacity. Despite missing two rounds of the 1963 World Championship, works rider Tarquinio Provini lost out on the title by only two points. The bike is from an Italian private collection, and expected to fetch between £75,000 and £85,000. The sale also includes two special Royal Enfield racers, built by former world champion Bill Lomas and offered for sale by the Lomas family. One is a circa-1946 350/500cc JAP-engined special, estimated at £10,000 to £14,000. The other is his famous twin-cam 250, estimated at £10,000 to £14,000. Built in 1949, the cammy motor went into Bill’s successful 250cc Enfield racer, and his excellent results on this machine led to offers of rides in Grands Prix and at the Isle of Man TT. He went on to win the 350cc World Championship for Moto Guzzi in 1955 and 1956 before retiring to run the family motorcycle business. Other desirable British classics include a 1938 Vincent-HRD 500cc Meteor acquired by its last owner in the late 1940s and laid up since 1957. It is estimated to fetch between £22,000 and £26,000. The sale takes place at Stafford County Showground on Sunday, October 20.
Motorcycle Live offering free riding sessions for kids MOTORCYCLE Live 2013 got even bigger with the addition of yet another live feature – the Silverstone Rookie Ride. The Silverstone Rookie Ride is an initiative launched by the Northamptonshire race circuit to introduce young people to motorcycling. Aimed at those aged 11 and up, the feature will offer free 20-minute indoor taster sessions on a Yamaha Jog RR scooter. Participants will be provided with Alpinestars protective clothing and will be taught the basics of machine familiarisation and how to pull away and stop safely, before progressing to slow-speed manoeuvring skills. The scooters are fitted with kill switches, and all training takes places under the watchful eye of expert instructors. As well as learning new skills and an awareness of other road users, all attendees will take away a Silverstone lanyard and Rookie Ride card. Motorcycle Live takes place at The NEC,
