Get yourself an affordable cabriolet
Preaching to the unconverted Jonathan Crouch sums up what kind of affordable convertible you can get for your money in 2013 The Market
IF you believe an affordable cabriolet to be practical, you’ve been misled. There are convertibles you can buy that comfortably seat two adults in the back, but you won’t find them among the ranks of drop-tops based on family hatchbacks, the cars we’re considering here. Convertibles in the larger classes are based on the underpinnings of much larger executive cars and even these can struggle to accommodate back-seat passengers comfortably. The problem is these are cars that will generally cost you a lot more money – both to buy and to own. If you want something more affordable, consider one of those cheap out-and-out sports cars, a convertible in the so-called roadster class – something like an MG TF, and Audi TT or a Mazda MX-5. But these are tiny, compromised two-seaters. The noise and sports suspension set-up can get irritating too if you’re wanting an everyday car. Which is why the market for affordable convertibles sprang up, popularised by cabriolet versions of the VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra, Renault Megane and Peugeot 306. We’ve called them affordable four-seaters to differentiate them from roadsters. While roadsters are generally bought as second or third cars, these hatchback-based cabriolets are usually expected to function as everyday tools. You’d have thought this would mean they’re better-built than their roadster counterparts, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. If anything,

NEW league tables released by the website YourParkingSpace.co.uk reveal that savvy homeowners in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Nottingham and Bristol are among those achieving the highest additional household income by renting out their empty driveways. While residents in the capital who rented out parking space topped the list, earning on average £2,040 per year, homeowners in 23 other towns or cities all made an average of more than £1,000 per year. In Bristol, which came in at number seven, the average annual earning is £1,320. Charles Cridland, founder of YourParkingSpace.co.uk, said: “By registering your driveway or garage on YourParkingSpace.co.uk, homeowners have the opportunity to make money, especially if your home is near to local amenities such as a train station or sporting venue.” So far, more than 20,000 parking spaces in 10,000 individual locations have been registered.

Hatchback-based convertibles also tend to have been built down to a price, producing problems later on in second-hand life. What we’re saying is that here, more than ever, you need to pick your way very carefully’.
Cheap and Cheerful
You can buy a lot of trouble at the bottom of this particular market sector, turning what was supposed to be a cheap and cheerful buy into a depressing money pit. Early Cabriolet versions of the VW Golf, Renault Megane and Peugeot 306 are still quite plentiful in the sub-£2,000 bracket, but buying one of these will be a bit of a lottery. A far better place to start is the Vauxhall Astra Cabriolet, initially marketed as the Coupe Cabriolet. Based on the sleek Bertone-styled coupe, this car is not only easy to own but also great fun to drive and, in turbo guise, it’s one of the few affordable cabriolets with genuine poke. Even the 2.2-litre version has a very respectable turn of pace. Another major player is the Peugeot 206 CC Coupe Cabriolet, a car which revolutionised the market by bringing folding metal roofs within more modest budgets. There are a few bargains to be had with early examples, but the rear seats are tiny and give that roof a thorough inspection. It’s also worth highlighting the

Affordable Mid-Rangers
With a little more cash, you can buy with more confidence. There are supermini-based models which sought to capitalise on the success of the Peugeot 206 CC but the Nissan Micra C+C and Mitsubishi Colt CZC all have major issues relating to practicality. The 307 CC from Peugeot is an option but feels very much like a car built around its roof with stodgy handling and performance despite some powerful engines installed. It’s also afflicted by the scourge of so many folding hard-top cars in this sector. How can we put this delicately? It has a very big bottom. A more compelling visual proposition is the Vauxhall Astra Twintop, which feels a much better resolved car on the road than the Peugeot and
many models had a nifty function that let you raise the roof with a button on the key fob. If you have a few more bob to spend, the classy Volkswagen Eos – good engines and robust VW build – gets a solid recommendation. The Volvo C70 would be a good choice for people who need rear seats you can sit in. Cynics may say it’s just a badge-engineered Ford Focus, but it has a definite feel-good factor. It also looks a lot better than the gawky Focus CC, with its gigantic rear end.
Desirable, but Pricey
Many of the more recent small four-seat convertibles made big strides in terms of desirability and packaging. At last, with models like the Peugeot 308 CC and the Renault Megane CC that followed in 2010, we started to see cars in this sector that brought small compromises to go with their folding hardtops. The expansion of the Audi and BMW model ranges also brought them into
this sector during 2009 with the A3 Cabriolet and the 1 Series Convertible respectively. Both are great little cars with entertaining handling and cool, compact styling. You’ll still pay handsomely for them though. More affordable and smaller options include the cute Mini Convertible and the 207 CC, a big improvement over its 206 CC predecessor.

More than £50,000 raised for charity
In the pink to help princess trust POP star Miley Cyrus said “Pink isn’t just a colour, it’s an attitude too”. And that mantra was much in evidence earlier this month at the annual Pink Car Rally in aid of the Little Princess Trust. The participants, which this year included a team from Berkeley Vale Motors (BVM) in Thornbury, all take part in cars of a certain colour, collectively known as the Pinkies. Together they have raised more than £50,000 for the charity, which gives real hair wigs to children who lose their own hair, primarily through cancer treatment. This year’s event, on September 7, toured for two days, visiting hospitals in Hereford, Nottingham and Peterborough. Gary Bennett, General Sales Manager at BVM, said: “For our part, having only recently discovered the charity’s efforts, it was just three weeks before the planned rally that we had decided to take part.

Thirty-four staff at Wessex Garages on Feeder Road and Pennywell Road took part in the race at Baltic Wharf in aid of Penny Brohn Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Keith Brock, managing director of
Wessex Garages, said: “We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us. We are delighted to have raised £1,000 for the two charities. “Each dealership raised money for their Charity of the Year. The Pennywell team fundraised for Penny Brohn Cancer Care and the Feeder team took part in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
“The dragon boat race was a great team-building exercise for the dealerships. They also battled it out to see who reigned supreme and it was staff at our Pennywell Road dealership who came out on top when it came to physical prowess.” Each dragon boat team had crews of 16 paddlers and a drummer and raced over a 250-metre course.

She was noticed because her eyes and her hands were glued not to the road and the steering wheel respectively, but to her mobile phone, on which she was texting, or emailing, or something. Avon and Somerset Constabulary tell us that the number of people caught using a mobile phone at the wheel has dropped by almost 45 per cent over the past four years.

In response to a request under the Freedom of Information law, the Bristol Post reported this week that, in 2008-09, 2,459 drivers had accepted an instant fine, but by the end of the year to March, the number stood at 1,370. Arrests rose from six to 11 over the same period, but convictions, for cases which ended up in court, fell from 444 to 276, a fall of 37.8 per cent. Police said that the decline was the result of more drivers learning safety messages and not using their phones while driving, denying claims that fewer checks were now being made. Corvette Stingray Fuel economy
You don’t buy a 6.2-litre V8-engined sports car and then get a bit precious about fuel economy, but Chevrolet has improved efficiency quite markedly. The big, lazy engine means that you can achieve some very good economy figures when you’re cruising quietly (perhaps around 32mpg), but drop the hammer and you’ll get closer to 10mpg.

Supercar still packs sting in the tail The Corvette is back in awe-inspiring Stingray guise. Andy Enright reports on an American car claiming cornering prowess to match the best of its European rivals – which would make this a very unusual US supercar indeed
Verdict The Corvette Stingray is a machine that deserves to be taken very seriously. If you like the idea of a car that’s just as capable as a really good Porsche 911 but costs less and is loaded with charisma, here’s your ride. With 455bhp and a price tag just north of sixty grand, it looks solid value.

FTER much conjecture, the seventh generation Corvette has arrived and although it’s certainly a more evolutionary design than some were expecting, it’s nevertheless got the chops to shake up the established order. Its predecessor had established a reputation for handling well and going like stink and later versions even started to feel reasonably well screwed together. The C7 improves perceived quality again, but if you want Audi-style soft-touch, silicon-damped everything, you’re probably looking at the wrong car. The Stingray is all about a charismatic V8, big performance and all the other things that you suspect might one day be legislated out of existence. Get it while it’s hot. Let’s put a couple of misconceptions about the Corvette to bed. It’s not a big and heavy car. It doesn’t take up much more space on the road than a Porsche 911 and it weighs significantly less than even an entry-level V6 Jaguar F-TYPE. It also does the go, stop and steer thing like no Corvette to date. It’ll go quicker through a slalom and hold higher lateral G figures than a Porsche Cayman S and it’ll outbrake one from 60mph as well. All UK cars are fitted with the Z51 performance pack, which includes an aero package, upgraded suspension and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Larger wheels (19-inch front and 20-inch at the back) and brakes (345mm
front, 338mm rear) are also included. This car’s magnetic ride control suspension has been specifically tuned for British roads, so ride quality is a big step forward compared to the C6. Downsides? Well, you’ll be sitting on the wrong side of the car. We were promised right-hand drive Stingrays and Chevrolet is still insisting they’ll arrive, but for the time being at least, you change gear with your right hand. There’s a choice of a seven-speed manual or a six-speed auto box. Go for the manual – it auto blips the direct injection engine on the down-change and requires a lot less effort than the old stick shift. A popular option will be the performance exhaust system, which sees the engine’s output climb to 460bhp and 465lb ft. Even without it, the Stingray gets to 60mph in under four seconds. I don’t think it’s as pretty a car as the C6 but it looks a good deal more aggressive. The quad exhausts look utterly OTT, but since when was subtlety a Corvette prerequisite? The cabin is better finished than ever, though the seats feel as if they’ve been designed for 50-something Americans and could probably use tighter and more supportive side bolstering. The instrument pack is something special, with the old gauge cluster replaced with a digital unit, showing conventional info in the default setting, switching to a large tachometer in Sport, while Track mode reveals a lateral rev display inspired by the Corvette C6.R race car.

The stitched leather steering wheel is a quality item but some of the minor switchgear still looks a bit parts bin and the paddle shifters are cheap – unforgivable when you’re spending over £60,000. The fee of just over £60,000 that Chevrolet charges for the Stingray in the UK includes the Z51 pack and a few other trick bits as well. Remember that it’s fairly easy to specify a Porsche Cayman S to this sort of money and that a base 911 with 110bhp less costs over £12,000 more. To buy a 911 that’ll dice with the Stingray, you need to drop over £100,000 on the specialist GT3. Standard equipment includes the tablet-inspired Chevrolet MyLink connected radio with two 8-inch display screens (with a screen personalisation option), USB port, SD card and auxiliary input jacks, as well a centre screen that lowers for device storage. Options include metallic paint (£600), tintcoat paint (£1,000), satnav (£1,450) and black aluminium wheels (£550). The Corvette Stringray doesn’t need to try too hard to impress. It appeals to a very different clientele here compared to the US. There, it’s the car for the 55-year-old plumber made good, a treat when you retired early. Here it’s a car that will be seen on track days and will be used hard. Few will be disappointed with their decision to choose the Corvette over, say, a Cayman S or a BMW M4. It even manages to make Nissan’s GTR look a tad pricey. Sports cars don’t get much better than this.
